The Lost Boys Are Found on The CW

0
0

Well… can’t exactly say we didn’t see this one coming given the defanging of “The Vampire Diaries.” According to Deadline, The CW has landed “The Lost Boys,” a series adaptation of the iconic 1987 Warner Bros. horror comedy movie from “Veronica Mars” and “iZombie” creator Rob Thomas, Gulfstream TV, and Warner Bros. Television.

Written by Thomas, “The Lost Boys” series re-imagines the cult Joel Schumacher film, which starred Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman.

Envisioned for a seven-season run, it will tell a story spanning 70 years, each season chronicling a decade. Season 1 will be set in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, 1967. Each season the humans, the setting, the antagonist, and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who like the Peter Pan characters never grow up, remain the same.

The project, which will explore what it really means to be immortal, is executive produced by Thomas via Spondoolie Productions, his frequent collaborators Danielle Stokdyk and Dan Etheridge, as well as Gulfstream principals Mike Karz and Bill Bindley.

It was Gulfstream’s idea to remake “The Lost Boys” into a TV series through the company’s overall deal with WBTV. Thomas, who also is under an overall deal at WBTV, came on board and came up with the new take on the movie that was pitched and landed at The CW in a competitive situation, with two networks pursuing.

Gulfstream Television head Juliana Janes, who was instrumental in putting the project together, will oversee for the company.

Toho Animates Godzilla

The purveyor of all that is Godzilla, August Ragone, just pointed out that after recently registering the domain Godzilla-Anime.com, Toho has just announced its upcoming animated feature, simply titled Godzilla. Curious that they didn’t opt for Gojira, but hey, we ain’t complaining!

Toho Animation is preparing this animated feature for theatrical release sometime next year via Polygon Pictures (Star Wars: The Clone Wars). It will be co-directed by Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan, Knights of Sidonia) and CG director Hiroyuki Seshita (the Final Fantasy movie franchise, Ajin: Demi-Human). Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Gargantia) will write from his own concept.

No story details are available at press time, but the teaser image below seems to showcase what could be a futuristic setting. Stay tuned.

Somewhere in California, there’s a lake where many, many people have drowned. So naturally, a documentary crew set out to investigate; and lo and behold, there’s actually something big and hungry living in Avocado Lake that’s been causing all the deaths.

If you haven’t figured it out, I’m describing a new movie. Lake of Shadows: The Legend of Avocado Lake, from director Michael S. Rodriguez, is currently on Kickstarter and promises to be a bold new take on the found footage genre. And yes, it’s gonna be using good old practical effects to bring the giant fish to life.

Currently slated to star are Felissa Rose, Marv Blauvelt, Robert LaSardo, Jared Degado, Michael Wainwright, Tina Johnson, and newcomer Cesar Ramos Zamora.

Michael Pena Boards The Bringing

0
0

Casting news has arrived for director Jeremy Lovering’s (In Fear) new film The Bringing, which is inspired by the Elisa Lam story – a young woman who was found dead in a water tank on the roof of the Hotel Cecil in Los Angeles. The script has nothing really to do with that tragedy, but it created a germ of an idea focusing on a man investigating a death at the hotel and the nightmare he stumbles into.

THR is reporting that Michael Pena has signed on to the horror thriller from Columbia Pictures. The script centers on a man (Pena) who is investigating a woman’s death set in the notorious and infamous Cecil Hotel. Brandon and Phillip Murphy wrote the initial script, which landed on the 2014 Black List. Evan Dickson also worked on the project, with the most recent draft being written by Kevin Kolsch and Denis Widmyer, the duo behind the 2014 horror thriller Starry Eyes.

Michael Pena

Matt Tolmach is producing as is Daniela Cristina Cretu. David Manpearl is also producing. Matt Milam and Dan Kagan are overseeing for the studio.

Lam, who was only 21, was last seen at the Cecil Hotel on January 31, 2013, according to L.A. police. Her parents had reported her missing, and her body was discovered, nude and floating in the water tower of the hotel (a drinking source for residents), where she apparently was for two weeks.

Lam’s final moments were caught on the elevator security camera of the hotel. The footage you see below was taken moments before her death. In it you’ll see Lam acting very strangely. She appears to be running from or hiding from someone… or something. Most perplexing about the video is that the door stays open the entire time, nearly four minutes.

A maintenance worker discovered the body while looking into complaints about the water pressure in the building. Guests had been drinking and bathing with water contaminated by a body that had been decomposing for nearly two weeks. So how did she get there? The water tower on top of the building was 15 feet high and locked. To gain access to said tower, Lam would have had to have passed silently through two locked and alarmed doors first. Apparently she did so. All doors were still locked. No alarms were ever tripped. There are 100’s of stories about this on the internet reported by every reputable news agency that there is. Some people say she was possessed or attacked by a ghost. If this is the case, then this is the only known footage of such an occurrence.

In the end her death was ruled as “accidental.” Mind you, her clothes were never found.

The Blair Witch Project Co-Creator Eduardo Sanchez Talks Blair Witch

Along with Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sanchez burst onto the scene with The Blair Witch Project, a film that broke a lot of rules and struck box office success. Now, with a new sequel on its way, Sanchez sat down with podcast The Found Footage Critic to offer his opinion on Blair Witch (review).

It’s just full-blast Blair Witch,” he explained. “It’s really creepy, and the last third is just crazy. It’s just all over the place. It just does not let you go, you know? I’m really happy to have been a part of it… it kind of progresses the found-footage genre a little bit, which I think is really cool.

He continues: “It’s really, really well grounded in the original. And I think that the fans of the original will get a lot out of it. It’s kind of a recognizable… it’s almost like you’ve been, like kind of a deja vu, but then it turns into just a — like I said, it kinda takes our film and blows the doors off and goes nuts with it in a really, really good way.

Written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard, Blair Witch stars James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson. Roy Lee (The Ring, The Grudge, The Strangers, It), Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Insidious), Keith Calder, and Jessica Wu (You’re Next, The Guest) produce.

Synopsis:
A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister, who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

RiffTrax Live Enters the Carnival of Souls this Halloween

0
0

With Tokyo and the mysterious American city of “New Kirk” still in ruins following Mothra’s rampage as the queen of all Kaijus was roasted by RiffTrax Live at theaters all across the country the other night, the “Mystery Science Theater 3000” alumni already have a destination set for their upcoming Halloween show — a mind-bending trip to a Carnival of Souls.

RiffTrax riffmasters Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett return to theaters for Halloween season when they take aim at the surreal 1963 cult horror favorite Carnival of Souls. In its first big screen presentation since a recent full-color restoration, Carnival of Souls as riffed by the RiffTrax crew promises to be weird, creepy, very silly, and the perfect Halloween treat.

This will actually be RiffTrax’s second crack at the organ music extravaganza that is one woman’s strange encounter with an abandoned carnival following a traumatic car accident. Expect news riffs and at least one short subject preceding the film to stagger your imagination.

A little disappointed they aren’t doing the dubious 1998 direct-to-video “Wes Craven Presents…” remake. I’d go so far as to say there’s a treasure trove of direct-to-video flicks from the Nineties screaming out for the RiffTrax treatment. What I’m saying is I want to see RiffTrax Live: King of the Kickboxers. It needs happen, Jackson!

Fathom Events presents RiffTrax Live: Carnival of Souls at a theater near you live Thursday, October 27, at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT and tape-delayed to 7:00 p.m. MT/8:00 p.m. PT, with a special re-broadcast on Halloween night, Monday, October 31. Mark your calendars accordingly. Your very soul may depend upon it.

And if you missed RiffTrax Live: Mothra, it replays in theaters one more time this Tuesday night.

Supernatural Creatures Rise in the Trailer for Syfy’s Aftermath

0
0

Keeping track of all the horror on TV is becoming a full-time job around here, and one new series that we’ve only mentioned in passing is Syfy’s “Aftermath,” arriving in just a few more weeks.  But with the release of its artwork and trailer, the show has definitely gotten our attention…

Serpent gods? Mass vanishings? Demonic possessions and skin walkers?  Aw yeah, mama… this ain’t your daddy’s apocalypse!

“Aftermath” was co-created by Glenn Davis and William Laurin (collaborators on “Once a Thief,” “1-800-Missing,” and more), who are also exec producers and share writing duties with Denis McGrath. Jason Stone serves as consulting producer with McGrath and Adriana Maggs.

Two episodes were directed by Kaare Andrews (Altitude, Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero), who wrote on Facebook: “My episodes air in November! This has been my first year working in TV and it has been a great experience. Feels like comics in many ways that films do not. Can’t wait to share my crazy episodes.”

Stone (The Calling), James Marshall (“Smallville”), April Mullen (“Killjoys”), and Stefan Pleszczynski (“Supernatural,” “Being Human”) also spent time behind the camera for a couple of episodes each.

“Aftermath” Episode 1.01 debuts on Tuesday, September 27, at 10/9c, following the season premiere of “Channel Zero: Candle Cove,” another new Syfy project we’re keeping our eyes on. Could this be the resurgence of the network? Stay tuned!

About “Aftermath” Season 1:
A new 13-episode original co-production produced by Halfire Entertainment in association with Syfy and Space, “AFTERMATH” centers on one family – Karen (Anne Heche; “Hung,” “Men in Trees”) and Joshua Copeland (James Tupper; “Revenge,” Grey’s Anatomy”) and their children (Dana, Brianna, and Matt). The Copelands battle for survival after civilization comes to an apocalyptic end triggered by massive storms, meteor strikes, and earthquakes—and they are faced not only with plague, but the rise of supernatural creatures.

Universal Cable Productions is handling international distribution.

New American Horror Story ?6 Promo Comes Crawling In

0
0

This is interesting… a new “American Horror Story” promo has arrived that just might have something to do with the upcoming sixth season given that it hearkens back to some earlier artwork, also of the arachnid variety.  Open wide, and check it out.

“American Horror Story” kicks off its sixth chapter on FX on Wednesday, September 14, at 10 PM ET/PT.

The returning stars for Season 6 are expected to include Kathy Bates, Denis O’Hare, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Finn Wittrock, Cheyenne Jackson, Wes Bentley, Lady Gaga, Leslie Jordan, and Matt Bomer. Cuba Gooding, Jr., is rumored to be on-set as well.

Official clues about “American Horror Story” Season 6 are slim, and these teasers only deepen the mystery by continuing to stir up speculation of murder, madness, misfits, and mayhem. The one below is being released in theaters this weekend as well as on TV. It ties all the seasons together… or does it?  Only Ryan Murphy knows for sure!

For more info visit the “American Horror Story” Facebook page, and follow @AHSFX on Twitter along with “American Horror Story” on FX.

Tank 432 (2016)

0
0

tank 432 (1)Starring Rupert Evans, Steve Garry, Deirdre Mullins, Michael Smiley, Gordon Kennedy, April Pearson

Written and directed by Nick Gillespie

Screened at Fantasia 2016

Premiering at this year’s Fantasia Fest in beautiful Montreal, Nick Gillespie’s Tank 432 (aka Belly of the Bulldog) should probably already be on your radar if you’re a fan of genre auteur Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High-Rise). Wheatley only serves as executive producer here, but his influence is felt, especially in the casting of actor Michael Smiley, who frequently pops up in Wheatley’s films.

Smiley is only one of a group of hired soldiers who find themselves running from a mysterious enemy as they try to keep their two female hostages, and themselves, alive long enough to find out what their mission is on a remote battlefield.

Rupert Evans (The Boy, Hellboy) plays Reeves, the moral center of Tank 432 who’s thrust into a dire situation where his thrown together outfit is severely outmanned and mostly fueled by fear. Appearing suddenly on the horizon, strange figures resembling Tusken Raiders in lab coats haunt the soldiers instead of actually engaging in battle. They seem impossible to kill, forcing the ragtag group to hole up in an abandoned tank, where they slowly uncover the truth about their situation.

There are some effective reveals and a few memorable kills using practical effects, along with some epic drone cinematography and a melancholy piano score, that combine to make Tank 432 feel almost like an R-rated episode of “The Twilight Zone.” The performances, especially by Smiley as the increasingly crazed Capper, are all compelling and add to the claustrophobia.

These grunts are there on a need-to-know basis and, as a result, can’t really do anything but follow orders. The audience, however, doesn’t really know what’s going on either; and once the answers start to come, it’s a little too late. The big reveal towards the end is somewhat vague and emotionally unsatisfying. There are enough clues to stay engaged in the story, however; and the not knowing does make it easier to relate to just how in the dark these characters are.

Tank 432 at its core is really about what the government is capable of and how individuals no longer deserve any answers once they become an expendable piece of property. Add the twisted ideas of writer/director Nick Gillespie and the aforementioned Wheatley to the mix, and suddenly, these mercenaries are in a world of hurt.

Seth Stars in a New Promo for From Dusk Till Dawn’s Season 3 Premiere

0
0

Fans seem to be mostly on board with the direction Robert Rodriguez has taken his reimagined “From Dusk Till Dawn” in as a TV series (myself included), and we’re edging closer to the September 6th premiere of the third chapter in the saga of the Gecko brothers.

One of said brothers, Seth, portrayed by D.J. Cotrona, is the star of this new promo for the show’s return, which will be a special two-episode event! Check it out, and expect more soon.

About “From Dusk Till Dawn” Season 3:
Season 3 of “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” will premiere on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at 9PM ET. The 10 new action-packed, horror-filled episodes follow the Gecko brothers into the vortex of the culebra underworld, as they are forced to assemble an unlikely crew to battle new enemies determined to take them down.

Season 3 features a returning ensemble cast including D.J. Cotrona, Zane Holtz, Eiza González, Jesse Garcia, Madison Davenport, Brandon Soo Hoo, Emily Rios, and Jake Busey.

New cast joining the third season are: Ana de la Reguera (“Jane the Virgin,” “Narcos”), who will have a recurring role as Lord Venganza Verdugo, one of the seven remaining culebra Lords; Marko Zaror (Machete Kills) as Zolo, an Aztec warrior trained in hell; Tom Savini (From Dusk Till Dawn) as Burt, a retired demon hunter who smokes more medical marijuana than he sells; Maurice Compte (“Breaking Bad,” “Narcos”) as Brasa, a mysterious Rasputin-like figure who takes on the Gecko brothers; and Nicky Whelan (“House of Lies,” The Wedding Ringer), whose character will be revealed during the season.

Robert Rodriguez, El Rey Network’s founder and chairman and the creator of the 1995 cult-classic film of the same name, directs the season’s second episode; additional returning directors include Dwight Little, Alejandro Brugués, Eduardo Sanchez, and Joe Menendez, and the newcomers are Eagle Egilsson, Rebecca Rodriguez, and Diego Gutierrez.

Season 3 of “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” continues the Gecko brothers’ saga as they fight their way through the chilling world of culebras, the vampire-snake hybrids that control hidden empires in Texas and Mexico. Once the baddest outlaws in the land, Seth and Richie made a run for the Border two years ago to save their lives – and their fortune. After stumbling into a bar full of bloodsuckers and bandits, the Geckos encountered the vampire goddess Santánico, joining her cause to settle an old score. It won them a place in the culebra world. Now that world is on the verge of violent and destructive explosion as new enemies hell-bent on domination gather to take them down. In typical Gecko fashion, Seth and Richie assemble an unlikely crew (some new, some old) to take on the forces of hell.

Call of Duty: Zombies Comic Run Promises Easter Eggs, Deeper Look Into Zombies Universe

I’ve never really jumped on the Call of Duty hate bandwagon. I get the general distaste for yearly releases with bloated DLC price tags, but the ubiquitous disdain for the quickscoping 12 year olds screaming racial slurs into their microphones never really made sense to me. As much as I am annoyed when some child tells me for the 15th time about how my mother pleasured him sexually, I have to remember that 15 years ago, that was me in Counter-Strike. There’s always going to be a game that appeals to more casual gamers and the “hardcore” alike, and Call of Duty just happens to fill that niche.

The funny thing is, for such a commonly criticized franchise, it’s not a bad deal. Gripe about the short campaign all you want, but that would be missing the other 80% of the game. The reality of Call of Duty is that it is a multiplayer shooter first and a single player experience second. More so, it offers a variety of multiplayer options that other similar titles wouldn’t. Which brings me to the entire reason why I cover the game anyways, the “Zombies” mode.

Since its introduction in Call of Duty: World at War, the bonus “Zombies” mode has become an integral part of the package. Starting as an easter egg arcade mode, it’s evolved, expanded, and become an experience in itself that justifies the entire purchase for some. It’s a familiar experience every time as you fight off waves of zombies, but each iteration has proved unique, ranging from cold war leaders to moon bases. With the newest reveal for Infinite Warfare’s “Zombie in Spaceland” mode, we once again see a shift in tone away from “Shadows of Evil” to a more comical, retro vibe. Groovy.

Fans will attest that “Zombies” is far more than the arcade survival mode that it presents itself as. What has always made it stand out is the numerous easter eggs, secrets, and story clues hidden in every map. Every player will get some hints as to what’s going on through dialogue quips or visual cues, but only the most dedicated will suss out every secret hidden in the robust mode. It’s a challenge that feels distinctly interactive, requiring community effort to figure everything out.

It’s why when the people over at Activision reached out and asked if I to talk about the upcoming Call of Duty: Zombies comic book, I was intrigued. For a story always told minimally, I was curious how they would manage to translate that into a fully fledged comic book. I’m sure people are interested in what is happening to the characters, but how will they maintain the integrity of storytelling?

To answer my questions, I talked to Jason Blundell and Craig Houston, Executive Creative Director and Lead Writer at Treyarch respectively. Hey, if you want some straight answers, why not go right to the top? Together, they told me about their vision for the Call of Duty: Zombies comic, and their design philosophy for the beloved game mode.

The first thing we talked about was what exactly was in store for the comic run. The first issue will take place immediately following the continuing exploits of the TranZit crew from Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Summoned by the infamous Dr. Edward Richtofen, they have to work together to find an object known as the Kronorium. As for his motivations, true goal, or reason behind his reappearance, I was told that this would be a central theme in the six issue series.

Bus Driver

I’d pay good money for a spin-off series starring this guy.

With the comic run, they wanted to take a transmedia approach to engaging with their fans during what is typically “DLC season.” Since the main installments generally only come out once a year, this is an opportunity to give their fans zombie content outside of that set release schedule. They assured me that the comic story was 100% canon, and would give readers more intimate time with the characters they generally only see amidst waves of wanton slaughter.

To execute this task, they enlisted the aid Dark Horse Comics and writer Justin Jordan. While many know Jordan for his work on various DC comics and some of their “New 52” runs, I’m a fan of his creatively violent work The Strange Talent of Luther Strode. Working in collaboration, they told me their goal was to make an authentic “Zombies” experience, but to let Jordan’s expertise shine through and enhance the final product. With their powers combined, they hope to deliver a comic that will exceed fan expectation.

So all of that is cool and all, but they hadn’t yet answered my most fundamental question. How the heck do you translate a story told almost entirely in soundbites and secrets into a six issue series? Their main answer was that while the objectives were different, key design philosophy was the same. This isn’t meant to be an arcade mode played in repeatable chunks. This is a closer, more intimate look at the characters. At the same time, numerous messages, clues, and easter eggs are hidden throughout the pages. They told me specifically to pay attention to the covers, alluding to something hidden when all six are added together.

Call of Duty: Zombies

Go ahead and start picking through now if you want.

At the same time, they understand that a vast majority of players have not found every single “Zombies” secret. One of the benefits of this is that they are free to introduce the characters in a state of relative tabula rasa. They are pre-established characters, but readers don’t have to worry about missing too much backstory when jumping in at issue 1. The story will be relevant for players that have followed every single plot twist and reveal, but won’t be incomprehensible to new readers. For the hardcore fans, they recommend doing exactly what they do with the game: hunt for clues, root out the secrets, and find the hidden stories.

Lastly, I couldn’t rightly have a conversation with Jason Blundell and Craig Houston and not ask them for a little bit more information on the “Zombies” game mode. First off, standalone zombies game? Their answer was measured, as the Activision rep also in the call cleared his throat audibly. Their official stance is that while they always love hearing fan reaction, a standalone “Zombies” game is not in the works. Their reasoning was that it would pull focus from making the best Call of Duty package. Many gamers only buy a handful of titles a year, and they want to work their hardest on making Call of Duty a robust and diverse package well worth the $60. When speaking for the Treyarch games, I’ll support this notion. The Black Ops run has been a cut above the Infinity Ward titles, with the first Black Ops completely changing the expectations of what a “Call of Duty” title was. Still, I’d really like to just buy a $20 zombies mode over a $60 package.

The final thing they told me about was a fun bit of “Zombies” trivia that fans will love. I asked if they knew when making it that it would become a major part of the package, and they told me absolutely not. According to them, the mode was pieced together by passionate workers during spare moments and lunch breaks. A hodgepodge of assets, a member of the art department would take a few extra hours one day to make the zombie skins and someone in the level design department would use his lunch break to make a room a few days later. It all came from the most inauspicious of origins: the flamethrower death animation. World at War had introduced a flame thrower, and they realized that if you took out the flames, its death animation looked a lot like zombies walking around. So from there, bits and pieces came together until “Zombies” was born. It just goes to show that sometimes, you strike gold in the most unexpected places.

Call of Duty Zombies

Of course, the goal is to then put the zombies back on fire.

I don’t think I need to sell this comic to hardcore “Zombies” fans. If you’re the kind of guy that will buy the season pass and spend hundreds of hours picking apart every detail, then you’ll be buying this comic book. What I think is most interesting is what this means for the more casual audiences. For a mode whose story has largely been locked away behind layers of secrets, a more accessible narrative is welcome. It’s going to provide a good, concrete foothold for new players to experience the universe. It’s unreasonable at this point to buy every title and find the secrets in every map just to unfurl the story, so having a conduit into the universe that is more accessible is crucial at this point.

You’ll be able to see for yourself how it all pans out when the first issue drops on October 19th. Real talk, what gives me the biggest hard-on for this project is Justin Jordan. He’s not quite a Brian K Vaughan or Kirkman level name, but his work is really solid. I love when a great name has a chance to do something unique with an established title, like Ennis’s Punisher run or Morrison’s Doom Patrol. Check back in after I get my hands on it, and I’ll let you know what I think.
