Who Goes There Podcast: Episode 81 Ghoulies Go To College w/ Batlords

Who’s blood is on the floor? Who’s knocking at the door? Man I really gotta know…why the fuck we did a film with a 3.5 IMDB rating. Yeah, 3.5. We turned our brains off and spent way too much time discussing Ghoulies Go To College. We’re joined by Stevie Dio from horror punk band Batlords, because he’s the haomie, he’s hilarious and Jorge “loves” talking about shitty movies.

So here we go, crushing beers, talking horror pornos, circle jerk Snakes on a Plane, sun tanned boobs in Final Destination, Anne Heche’s butthole and straight up possessions, dawg! We also spend a lot of time reminding Stevie that Batlords has a new album out and a new ep on the way, and Steve tells us where he thinks our bread and butter comes from. Steve is clearly an idiot. If we die, we die tonight; it’s the Who Goes There Podcast episode 81. See you next Tuesday, cunts.

Sure, the high-profile horror shows like “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” “American Horror Story,” and the like get a lot of attention; but for my money the best of the current crop also includes “Salem,” which is getting set to kick off its third season on WGN America this Halloween season.

On tap now are three new videos to help whet your appetites for the witchy shenanigans to come! The new season begins on Wednesday, November 2nd.

About “Salem” Season 3:
The third season of “Salem” dawns with the triumph of the witches’ plan to remake the New World by bringing the devil to earth and making Salem his capital. But the devil is a liar, and instead of a New World free from murderous Puritan hypocrisy, his own plan will bring nothing but death and slavery with the ultimate aim of leading humanity to destroy itself. And there’s only one person on earth who can beat the devil — the very witch that birthed him, his mother, Mary Sibley. The only problem is—she’s dead. Or is she?

“Salem” stars Janet Montgomery as Mary Sibley, Shane West as Captain John Alden, Seth Gabel as Cotton Mather, Ashley Madekwe as Tituba, Tamzin Merchant as Anne Hale, Elise Eberle as Mercy Lewis, Iddo Goldberg as Isaac Walton, Joe Doyle as Baron Sebastian Marburg, and Oliver Bell as Mary’s son. Renowned recording artist Marilyn Manson guest stars as Thomas Dinley; also new this season is Samuel Roukin as The Sentinel.

Created and written by Brannon Braga and Adam Simon, “Salem” is executive produced by Braga, Simon, Kelly Souders, Brian Peterson, and The Firm’s Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry. The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios.

Here’s some early info on the first five episodes of Season 3.  Of special note is Episode 3.04, “Night’s Black Agents,” which is directed by none other than Joe Dante!

Episode 3.01: “After the Fall” (airs 11/2/16)
Written by Brannon Braga and Adam Simon; directed by Nick Copus

Episode 3.02: “The Heart Is a Devil” (airs 11/9/16)
Written by Adam Simon; directed by Tim Andrew

Episode 3.03: “The Reckoning” (airs 11/16/16)
Written by Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson; directed by Wayne Yip

Episode 3.04: “Night’s Black Agents” (airs 11/23/16)
Written by Brannon Braga and Adam Simon; directed by Joe Dante

Episode 3.05: “The Commonwealth of Hell” (airs 11/30/16)
Written by Adam Simon; directed by Nick Copus

Maximum Ride (2016)

Maximum RideStarring Allie Marie Evans, Patrick Johnson, Peter O’Brien, Luke Gregory Crosby

Directed by Jay Martin

The film adaptation of the James Patterson book series Maximum Ride was first announced as a major motion picture all the way back in 2009 during the Twilight boom that saw movie studios snatching up every semi-popular Young Adult genre book series that could potentially become the next tween box office cash cow. At the time Columbia Pictures had optioned the rights and Catherine Hardwicke (director of the first Twilight feature) was being courted to give these teenage bird people flight.

We hadn’t heard a peep about a Maximum Ride movie for over six years until I saw it listed the other day as one of the week’s new VOD movie releases. One look at the trailer told me this was not a major studio movie; yet, my “Foydar” tingled, and I decided to give it a look. Much like the canary in the coal mine, I’m now here to warn you that if you spend your hard-earned money watching these cinematic bird droppings, you’ll be the one taken for a ride. As someone who has a passing knowledge of the book series but has never actually read them, I still have no problem calling Maximum Ride one of the worst movies I’ve seen all year.

For a movie entitled Maximum Ride, a title that promises as much action and excitement as one can handle, action proves scarce to the point that even when something physical happens, it’s over in a flash and achieved with non-existent excitement. Fight scenes last micro seconds. Flying scenes are only slightly more thrilling than that of “The Flying Nun.” (Obscure reference alert!) Instead of soaring, the half-bird teen angel movie is a lead balloon that creeps along lifelessly at a snail’s pace until it reaches a cliffhanger that laughably assumes there will be sequels. Sorry, this bird don’t fly…

Literally.

This is a movie about a half-dozen genetically engineered teenage bird people that sprout wings from their backs the way Wolverine sprouts claws; however, they spend more time moving about on two legs. I’m fairly positive I only ever saw two of the teens sprout wings, hardly, and fly, barely. When they do take to the sky, which, again, is almost never, the movie just recycles the same f/x flying shots, right down to using the exact same scenery they keep flying over and over. Not one scene of the six members of “The Flock,” as they’re called, flying in unison — not one! And when they do get airborne, the digital work is only slightly more impressive than the special effects from a 15-year-old rerun of “Charmed.” Without a proper budget Maximum Ride’s wings were clipped before it ever even got a chance to take flight. Should have stayed grounded; if your movie is about winged teenagers that fly around and you don’t have the means to show them with wings or flying around, perhaps maybe you should reconsider bothering to make the movie at all.

But if you like watching winged teenager characters minus their wings standing around, sitting around, or walking around drearily discussing the plot and their back-story or having flashbacks to their youth where even their younger selves mostly sit around detailing plot mechanics, then you’re going to love Maximum Ride.

I felt bad for the actors because a large part of why they come across as so wooden is due to the leaden dialogue they constantly spew that rarely ever bothers to give any of them so much as a drop of personality. Allie Marie Evans, looking like Bebe Rexha lost on her way to a punk rock concert, might have been able to make something out of her role as titular heroine Max if there was anything there for her to make. She’s the only one given a modicum of personality, but just a smidge of attitude and longing.

Maximum Ride doesn’t even get the teen romance element you expect from this genre correct. There’s a guy who I think is supposed to be her potential romantic interest, but their relationship is so platonic he might as well be her brother.

The rest of “The Flock” barely get any screen time to establish themselves as anything of consequence aside from being ciphers to state more facts than Joe Friday. This movie could be taught in screenwriting classes as a prime example of that quintessential no-no: “Tell, not show.”

As much as they keep reciting story elements telling us what’s going on rather than actually engaging in a story, things are sometimes left so vague you have to guess for yourself. Or they just assume you’ve read the books and know what the heck they’re talking about. The villain, Ari, a teen wolf hybrid who looks like the werewolf lead singer of a Skid Row tribute band and hilariously growls his every line, is constantly referred to as an “eraser.” What’s an eraser? I still don’t know for sure because I don’t recall the movie ever once actually bothering to spell it out.

Six genetically engineered human-bird hybrids have escaped from a research lab called “The School” located in Death Valley with the help of their scientist father figure Jeb. Now they live on their own in a secluded safe house in the Rocky Mountains called “The Nest.” Jeb is gone, leaving eldest Max in charge, much to the chagrin of some of the others that sometimes resent her “grrl power” mother hen attitude. Everyone mopes to varying degrees, whether it be longing to leave the Nest and be a normal person or hoping for the return of Jeb. Well, the youngest kid with a thing for building bombs seems kind of upbeat — might want to keep a close eye on him in the future.

The members of “The Flock” don’t know exactly what they are or why they were created. They might actually discover the truth when hench-wolfmen “erasers” from “The School” arrive to abduct the youngest bird girl Angel for reasons the heroes will have to go find out for themselves. And that’s pretty much all this 82-minutes-but-feels-much-longer slog into Young Adult movie hell has to offer.

I would say the entire production reeks of a glorified fan film except I’m fairly certain a fan of the source material would have done it more justice.

Speaking of which, my niece has read all the Maximum Ride books, and as mere coincidence she was over shortly after I finished watching the film version. I wanted to get her take as a fan so I fired up the movie once more and skipped around, showing her bits and pieces of various scenes and characters to gauge her response. I believe this pretty much encapsulates her reaction to what I was showing her:

The Presidential election is right around the corner, and to celebrate it, The Purge: Election Year is coming home just in time! Read on for details!

From the Press Release:
Director and writer James DeMonaco (Assault on Precinct 13, The Negotiator) delivers the best and most action-packed Purge yet when THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR, the third chapter in the thrilling franchise, arrives on Digital HD on September 20, 2016, and on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and On Demand on October 4, 2016, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

As the government prepares for its annual Purge, the one night a year when all crime is legal, America’s New Founding Fathers are faced with strong opposition from a Presidential hopeful and her supporters who wish to abolish the country’s violent tradition. With deleted scenes, a character spotlight, and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR offers viewers a closer look at the disturbing, thought-provoking, and timely thriller.

It has been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night – the 12 hours of lawlessness. This year, the annual ritual comes at the eve of a heated Presidential election with the nation deeply divided between those who are pro- and anti-Purge. As head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), Leo’s mission is to protect her during her controversial and contested run for President. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of Washington, D.C., on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.

Collaborating with franchise creator James DeMonaco on THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR are the series’ producers: Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious and Ouija series and The Visit), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Ouija), and DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers). Starring Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Zero Dark Thirty), Elizabeth Mitchell (“Lost,” “Once Upon a Time”), and Mykelti Williamson (Forrest Gump, “Justified”), critics hail THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR as: “The best yet. A huge home run!”-Ben Lester, The Stashed.

Special Features:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Inside The Purge: Discover how Director James DeMonaco found the humanity in this gruesome tale, and hear cast and crew discuss the film’s relevance to today’s culture; featuring interviews with Director James DeMonaco, Producer Jason Blum, and Cast Members Frank Grillo, Mykelti Williamson, and Edwin Hodge
  • Character Spotlight- Leo: Go on set with Frank Grillo as he rehearses stunts, reviews choreography, and examines the weapons used by his character

New Berserk Trailers Go Berserk

Do you like your crowd combat with an extra sprinkling of ultra-violence? If so, then have a look at some brutal new trailers for Berserk, Koei Tecmo’s adaptation of the infamously violent manga series. They also dropped some stills that offer a look at several of the game’s monstrous bosses.

Berserk certainly doesn’t hold back on the gore and will be slapped with a hard “M” rating when it hits the US towards the end of the year. Sadly, along with Nioh, it’s been confirmed (see PlayStation LifeStyle for more info) that it will be censored in its native Japan because of their censorship policies regarding violence in games. It’s sad to think that the country regarded as the home of video games still approaches the medium with a pro-censorship attitude.

At any rate, enjoy the eye candy below!

Director Announces Sequel to Killer Clown Movie 100 Tears

Released in 2007, Marcus Koch’s indie horror flick 100 Tears introduced the world to a brand new killer clown icon in the form of Gurdy, and now that the film is nearly 10 years old, Koch has officially announced that Gurdy will return in a brand new sequel. Read on for everything we know!

The sequel was initially teased over on the official 100 Tears Facebook page, where an image suggested that more information will be revealed on October 1st. In the meantime, Tom Holland’s Terror Time got the exclusive info that Jack Amos will reprise the role of Gurdy, but Koch won’t be directing.

Not too much to tell yet, there is a script, it’s more of an action gore film, though on Oct 1st we’ll have more to reveal, of course Jack Amos is back as Gurdy,” Koch told the site. “We haven’t begun casting yet, but we hope to be filming by January. I’m stepping down as director and letting my partner Joe Davison direct. This way I can focus more on the gore FX.”

In 100 Tears, after being accused of crimes he did not commit, a lonely circus clown exacts his revenge on those who unjustly condemned him. The act sparks something inside of him which he cannot stop and now, years later, his inner-demons have truly surfaced. Part urban legend, part tabloid sensationalism… he is now an unstoppable murderous juggernaut, fueled only by hate.

Kevin Bacon Talks Tremors TV Series; Set Up at Amazon

In the wake of brand new sequel Tremors: Bloodlines hitting home video, we learned that Kevin Bacon would be heading back to Perfection in the form of a new television series set within the franchise universe, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep. According to Bacon, it’s very much still happening!

Speaking with Collider, Bacon provided an update.

We’re at Amazon. We’re still waiting for a draft, but I’m 100% on board with that,” said the man who played Valentine McKee in the 1990 classic. “It’s great. It’s a super cool idea. They went and made a bunch of sequels to the movie. I want to put those aside because, first of all, I wasn’t in them. But what I was really interested in was taking this guy and, 25 years later, seeing what happened to him, to his dreams, and to his life. Andrew Miller, who’s writing the script, came up with this really, really interesting take on it, and I think it could be a lot of fun.”

The actor also reflected on Tremors.

When I came up with the idea and reached out to Blumhouse about looking at it again, I looked at the movie, and I don’t look at my movies, at all,” said Bacon. “I went back and put it up on my screen at home and went, ‘Wow, this is a really good movie!’ I just didn’t get it when I was there and in it. I wrote it off ‘cause it wasn’t a hit, and I really needed one. But, I think it’s a really good movie. It’s unusual and it’s funny. Doing funny scary is something that is rarely good and rarely works, and it’s also something that’s incredibly hard to market. I think that was part of the problem.”

More as we learn it.

This is the kind of story we hesitate to post, but since we know a lot of you are on the lookout for any possible clues that are out there regarding the theme/subtitle for the upcoming sixth season of “American Horror Story,” we thought we’d go ahead and provide you with the latest… just take it with a grain of salt, and beware of spoilers in case you want to be surprised…

LAST CHANCE…

According to numerous sources (see several tweets on this topic plus casting updates below), the upcoming season will be called “American Horror Story: The Mist,” which was also the title of one of the early Season 6 teasers. Even Rotten Tomatoes got in on the action, according to The Wrap (although now their page has been changed).

We’re skeptical, not only because there already is a story (and upcoming TV series) out there called “The Mist,” but also because it’s likely that Ryan Murphy & Co. are just using that title as a means to misdirect us.  In any event, all will be revealed on September 14th!
