Beyond the Walls (2016)

Beyond the WallsStarring Veerle Baetens, François Deblock, Lila-Rose Gilberti, Geraldine Chaplin

Directed by Hervé Hadmar

Screened at FrightFest 2016

This three-episode French miniseries, originally titled Au delà des murs, sees speech therapist Lisa (Baetens) suddenly inherit a strange house that sits across the road from her apartment. Apparently, the unrelated owner had sat, dead and undiscovered, in an armchair for thirty years – and his will explicitly names her as inheritor of his home.

Setting about redecorating, Lisa is intrigued by the strangely-patterned wallpaper… and when she breaks through the wall after hearing odd noises within, she finds herself stranded in a dark, labyrinthine world from which there appears to be no escape.

A dark fantasy through and through, Hervé Hadmar’s series paints a dislocated reality hidden in some kind of alternate plane, populated by other lost souls whose time spent wandering its hallways sees them gradually lose mental faculties – mutating and devolving into ink-soaked figures that seek to suck the life-force from other unwary travellers.

Still completely human, however, is Julien (Deblock), a soldier whose presence informs Lisa that not only is this a realm outside of standard physical space, but also outside of time itself. Julien has spent his days mapping out the environs in his search for an exit – and his wall-sprawling map provides ample persuasion that getting out will not be a simple task.

Hadmar stretches his tale out across three 45-minute episodes with measured precision, seeing a minimum of wasted time hit the screen. Both Baetens and Deblock are captivating leads throughout – especially Baetens’ complicated Lisa, whose internal conflict is very much apparent once she discovers the existence of a hidden grove within this bizarre realm… a place where safety could be assured for all time.

Most immediately striking are the series’ production values, which are astronomical. The visuals are at once creepy, absorbing and poetic, feeding off of the stunning set design to generate a distinctly fairytale-like atmosphere. Backed up by an involving score, Beyond the Walls makes an enchanting feast for the senses.

It isn’t all danger and exploration, however, as the burgeoning romance between Lisa and Julien becomes a primary narrative drive and key to much of the later episodes’ peril. Sadly, despite the extended running time, this isn’t fleshed out particularly well – the proverbial and literal climax of their relationship arriving with not quite enough convincing motivational fuel behind it.

Despite this slight failing, Beyond the Walls ramps up to a superbly constructed ending, tying the story together with earnest tenderness and an emotional gut-punch that’s guaranteed to pry at your tear ducts. Comparisons with the work of Guillermo del Toro are likely, given the skill with which Hadmar intersects the fantastical and monstrous with the practical and human – not to mention the sumptuous fantasy visuals.

Occasionally breathtaking, sporadically frightening and consistently enthralling, Beyond the Walls is a magnificent dive into the darkly fantastical that no genre fan should miss.

Blood Hunters (2016)

blood huntersposter (1)Starring Lara Gilchrist, Benjamin Arthur, Torri Higginson, Mark Taylor

Directed by Tricia Lee

Screened at FrightFest 2016

Following an accidental drug overdose, struggling single mother Ellie (Gilchrist) wakes up to find herself with two major problems: first, she appears to be in some kind of medical research facility – the half-gutted employee sitting nearby proving something is very, very wrong; second, she’s nine months pregnant.

Slowly investigating the clinical surrounds, Ellie happens upon a fellow patient who is tied up in quarantine. This is Henry (Arthur), and he’s very enthusiastic about being freed from his bonds considering the facility appears to be overrun by bloodthirsty creatures looking to put the bite on any soft human flesh they can find.

Meeting up with a gang of other survivors, including intern George (Taylor), technician Marion (Higginson) and pious clergyman Father Stewart (genre stalwart Julian Richings), Ellie and Henry try to find a way to destroy the creatures – which are sensitive to light – before the backup generator packs in and bathes everyone in darkness.

A creature feature with a creative difference, Blood Hunters offers plenty of inventive strangeness in its setup. Just why is Ellie pregnant? How long has she been here? Why does Henry collapse upon contact with other people, suffering debilitating visions of their deaths?

And where do the light-shunning, albino-skinned humanoid monsters come from?

It all ties together in quite a lofty sci-fi/horror idea – one that writer Corey Brown and director Tricia Lee sadly don’t manage to explore to the fullest, but is impressive in its originality nonetheless. The supporting characters are puddle deep (how often are we going to see the crazy religious zealot who just can’t wait to usher in the apocalypse?), but leads Gilchrist and Arthur are outstanding in their respective roles.

These two have a natural chemistry in their exploratory scenes together, and ably shoulder Blood Hunters’ attempts to breach realms of human connection and emotional turmoil that are generally unexpected in your standard ‘monsters loose in a facility’ genre flick. Unfortunately, it’s often overplayed by the film’s score, which tries much too hard to elicit emotional gravitas in various scenes and stands out like a manipulative sore thumb.

Blood Hunters’ monsters are pretty cool, and the attack sequences well constructed, but the suits employed for those playing the beasts look stiff and unwieldy, with one particular sequence descending into unintentional humour as the actor can do little but stand still and stiffly swing their arms. It isn’t all bad, though – and certainly a much more pleasant representation than a bunch of bargain basement CGI would have been.

Violence is occasional and bloody, including one truly painful cauterisation sequence, meaning Blood Hunters should satisfy those who like their creature features topped up with the red stuff. A rather abrupt ending tries to bring things to a close on a devastatingly emotional note but, in keeping with much of the film’s aspirations, plays it a little too hard with an overabundance of sentimentality.

But foibles aside, Blood Hunters is a deceptively admirable attempt to make something both new and dramatically strong within the genre – and even if it does try a little too hard to realise that ambition, Lee and co. should certainly be lauded for their efforts.

The Nightmare Before Christmas and Danny Elfman Performing at The Hollywood Bowl This Halloween!

The question as to whether Tim Burton’s massive achievement The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween film or an unusual Christmas tale has been long argued among Burton heads since the birth of The Pumpkin King. So let me oblige by settling the debate once and for all…

It’s both. Stop bickering already.

nightmare-before-christmas-nightmare-before-christmas-20683320-500-330

Now let’s all call truce and relish in the news that Danny Elfman, the man behind the hauntingly epic Nightmare score and the singing voice of Jack Skellington, is returning to the Hollywood Bowl this Halloween after a successful series of performances at the arena the year prior.

The limited engagement, which runs from October 29th to October 30th, stars Elfman as The Pumpkin King himself, Jack Skellington, along with other beloved Nightmare veterans reprising their speaking roles in the film. Catherine O’ Hara will be returning as Sally, the apple of Jack’s hollow eye socket. Paul Reubens, who voiced Lock, one of the three trick-or-treater henchmen of Oogie, is also appearing alongside his big bad boss in the film, Ken Page as Oogie Boogie.

The two-day scheduled performances will also feature conductor John Mauceri, who leads an orchestra and chorus into the beloved Burton soundtrack many of know by heart.

Last year the Bowl also hosted a Burton-inspired costume contest as show-goers who participated arrived in style as characters from their favorite Burton films ranging from the melancholy Edward Scissorhands to the Mad Hatter. With the success of last year’s event, audiences are encouraged to dress up again in Burton-esque fashion and participate in another contest.

Tickets to this truly once in a lifetime theatrical spectacle are available right now for purchase by clicking here.

J. Lincoln Fenn’s Dead Souls Want to Chill Your Bones

With September now almost half over, our thoughts are turning to the cooler months, which are perfect for huddling near the fireplace with a good novel. There’s a new one heading our way in a few days that promises to bring an edgy and bone-chilling tale we won’t soon forget.

Read on for more about J. Lincoln Fenn’s Dead Souls, arriving on September 20th from Gallery Books. Pre-order your copy from Amazon now.

Known for her #1 bestselling debut novel Poe, which won the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award for Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror, J. Lincoln Fenn is receiving fantastic early praise for Dead Souls, which is about what humans are willing to trade for their deepest desires with Fenn’s observations on today’s society subtly woven in. Fiona Dunn makes a deal with the Devil. The catch is that she must perform a favor for him at some point in the future—a gruesome, murderous, nefarious favor.

Synopsis:
When Fiona Dunn is approached in a bar by a man who claims he’s the Devil, she figures it’s just some kind of postmodern-slash-ironic pickup line. But a few drinks in, he offers her a wish in exchange for her immortal soul, and in addition, Fiona must perform a special favor for him whenever the time comes. Fiona finds the entire matter so absurd that she agrees. She trades her soul in exchange for the ability to become invisible and find out if her boyfriend is cheating. Bad idea. Not only does Fiona soon discover that she really was talking to the Devil incarnate, but she’s now been initiated into a bizarre support group of similar “dead souls”—those who have done the same thing as Fiona on a whim and who must spend their waking hours in absolute terror of that favor eventually being called in… and what exactly is required from each of them in order to give the Devil his due.

Dawn of the Deaf (Short, 2016)

Dawn of the Deaf PosterStarring Emily Bevan, Haley Bishop, Stephen Collins

Directed by Rob Savage

Screened at FrightFest 2016

Seeking to deliver a unique perspective on the zombie apocalypse, director Rob Savage enlists the assistance of London’s deaf acting community to create his 12-minute concept short, Dawn of the Deaf.

Playing out as something of an eye-opening urban drama for much of its runtime, Dawn of the Deaf delivers a highly respectful insight into the strained daily experiences of the UK’s deaf population – chronicling, with tight yet naturalistic cinematography, a deaf couple at a vulnerable point in their relationship, a young deaf woman suffering sexual abuse and a deaf man accepting a community spirit award.

All three are effective narrative arcs, which are admirably played out to their various conclusions within the short running time of the piece – the frankly fantastic cast selling every despondent, frustrated and elated moment through facial expressions, sign language and speech.

And then the horror hits. An ear-shattering signal sees the non-impaired population drop dead, blood gushing from their heads. Moments later, they rise… with a ravenous appetite for human flesh.

Savage doesn’t dwell on the carnage (though there is a bit of impressive effects work) – instead, he does a stellar job of injecting each of his characters’ scenarios with the undead in truly frightening ways. It’s chilling to see two deaf individuals so engaged in an argument with each other that they simply don’t notice the fact that everyone around them has dropped dead, and the other setups are equally toe-curling.

As the horde closes in and the old-school titles spread across the screen, there’s no room to doubt Savage as a filmmaker to watch out for – a man with a keen eye, something to say and a terrifying concept within which to say it. Dawn of the Deaf is an extremely strong calling card – earnest, respectful horror and signal of a socially aware filmmaker determined to make zombies scary again.

I say bring on a feature edition.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases: September 13, 2016

Greetings and salutations, friends. This week is loaded with tempting releases so I will do my best to touch all bases. There were two releases due out that got pushed back: A House Is Not a Home and Killer Ink have each been pushed back by a couple of weeks but will be listed in upcoming release lists.

The biggest title this week would probably have to be The Conjuring 2. Based off the infamous Enfield haunting, this film continues the quest of the Warrens – the paranormal investigators from Connecticut.

Our television section has two titles this week, and both of them are pretty cool in their own ways. First up is the complete first season of “Masters of Horror,” boasting a slew of A-list actors and directors in the genre. The second title is “The Munsters” complete series box set. This is a great entry-level item for those parents looking to introduce their children to this weird thing we’re into.

As for classics – there is a veritable smorgasbord of older content this week. Evil Dead II has fancy new packaging for its Blu-ray. Universal is delivering to us The Wolf Man and Frankenstein by means of Blu-ray Legacy Collections from as far back as 1931. Aliens is 30 years old; they made a Blu-ray to prove it. One of our collections is an 8-movie set from Hammer Films. There are even more classics listed below.

Concerning our collections (not including the two mentioned above), not only can you purchase The Ring and The Ring 2 separately this week, you can buy them as a double feature. The folks over at Blumhouse are bringing us a 4-movie collection this week. There’s even a 6-movie Paranormal Activity collection coming to you this week.

This barely puts a dent in the titles listed below so keep reading and keep checking back. Pleasant viewing.

Dating Apps Get Deadly in Other Halves; Available on VOD Next Month

Dating apps are already pretty damn creepy so the idea of a horror film based around the subject sounds pretty damn nifty. Other Halves (review) comes to VOD next month so read on for details.

From the Press Release:
In less than one month, Other Halves, the horror film about a killer dating app, will be streaming to laptops, cellphones, and internet-connected TVs around the world, starting October 4th. Viewers should beware; just look at what happens to Devon (played by Lauren Lakis) when she uses the app:

Other Halves stars Lauren Lakis and Mercedes Manning as programmers who develop a revolutionary new dating app called Other Halves. On the night before the app is set to launch, they discover it causes strange side effects: Users lose all self-control, becoming amoral, lascivious, violent, evil. They consider shutting the app down, but… Evil is profitable.

Watch the brand new trailer:

After a successful circuit of horror festivals, including Other Worlds Austin, Another Hole in the Head, and ZedFest (where it won Best Micro-Budget Feature), Other Halves will now be terrifying general audiences.

Shot on location at a real tech startup, the filmmakers sought authenticity in their depiction of coders in San Francisco. The writers, Matthew T. Price and Kelly Morr, consulted with actual programmers to ensure the dialogue was as realistic as possible. They also chose to focus on a team of women creating an app, a field that is traditionally dominated by men. The tech industry has been making a conscious effort to foster gender equality, and the creators of Other Halves wanted to reflect that.

To hear more about the women of Other Halves, here’s a behind-the-scenes video featuring stars Lauren Lakis and Mercedes Manning and writer-producer Kelly Morr:

Other Halves, from One Oh One Radio Pictures, is the feature film debut for writer/director Matthew T. Price and writer/producer Kelly Morr. The film is also produced by Curt Chatham and features Lianna Liew, Sam Schweikert, Melanie Friedrich, Megan Hui, and Carson Nicely.

You can follow the production on their website OtherHalv.es.

Sadhuram 2 Is an Indian Film Inspired by Saw

The Indian film Sadhuram 2 promises to be the country’s “1st philanthropical thriller”, whatever that means. It was also strongly inspired by the Saw movies, a fact that director Sumanth Radhakrishnan proudly acknowledges (see Times of India for more). However, it won’t be as violent as Saw because of the country’s unfortunate censorship policies, and that’s a damn shame.

Despite its name, it’s not a sequel, and the 2 was thrown on the end to make it seem as though the film has both an ambiguous beginning and ending.

Sadhuram 2 opens in India on September 16.

No, Dean Cundey Hasn’t Spoiled the Ending of The Thing

$
0
0

John Carpenter’s The Thing is about as close to a perfect horror movie as you can get. You have a master filmmaker at the peak of his powers, one of the most inventive creatures in cinema, and the paranoid subtext is still powerful today.

It’s also a movie that rewards repeat viewings, with each one yielding a new clue or insight you never spotted before. For example, in the scene where Windows finds Bennings being assimilated, did you hear the sound effect of keys dropping? These are the keys the intruder later uses to sabotage the blood test and also the reason Windows freaks out during the scene, since he assumes suspicion will fall on him. That’s just one of many little hints layered into it.

Carpenter has said The Thing benefited from a long development process, where he was able to develop the script and seed it with clues. Fans are discovering more to this day, thanks to the new special edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. Amongst the many extras this package contains is a new commentary with cinematographer Dean Cundey, wherein he discusses his approach to lighting it and the discussions he and Carpenter had in regard to key scenes.

The biggest surprise is a clue that’s been there the whole time, but no one seemed to pick up on it. During the infamous blood test scene, four men suspected of being the creature are tied down, with Kurt Russell’s MacReady determined to weed out the imposter. It’s hard to tell on first viewing who it could be, but if you look real close, there’s a major clue.

Three of them have a glimmer of light in their eyes, like gloomy gus Childs here.

the-thing-childs-

The only one who doesn’t is Palmer, and like Cundey says, his “dead eyes” are a subtle hint the character is an imitation.

palmer-the-thing

Horror fans have lost their minds over this revelation, proving once again The Thing is bottled greatness. Of course, they also think this visual cue might apply to other scenes; namely, the ending. The debate over Childs’ humanity in this final moment has raged for years, which is the point. It’s up to the viewer to decide ultimately, though movie geeks have eagerly picked the scene apart looking for proof.

The evidence many hold up is that Childs doesn’t appear to be breathing, an argument that falls on two fronts. The first is that the Thing is a perfect imitation of a human host, meaning all the good stuff like a heart, kidney and lungs. Blair points this out during the autopsy scene so it makes no sense to link Childs’ lack of visible breath with him being infected. Plus, his breath is visible, especially when he’s asking MacReady if anyone else survived. His isn’t as noticeable as MacReady’s, but it’s there.

Many are now applying the eye light theory to the ending, and at a glimpse it holds water. There’s clearly light reflected in MacReady’s eyes; yet, Childs’ look dark. Again, though, if you look closely, light is seen a couple of times throughout the scene. Like here.

the-thing-childs-pics

Cundey confirms the notion of treating one of the characters like they were infected was discussed, only for Carpenter to shoot it down; he deliberately wanted it vague. Maybe the director does know who might be infected during the end, but he’ll never tell us. Paranoia and the loss of humanity are the key points of the story so the paranoia needs to linger on after the credits roll. We’re not meant to know for sure, and it would almost be a disappointment to find out.

In the end it says a lot about the craft of The Thing that we’re still discovering secrets three decades later, thanks to the artistry of the people who made it.

The Arrow: It’s A Giallo Life

If you like your Italian thrillers infused with tawdry sex, unabashed misogyny, imaginative death sequences, and pure style, Arrow has you covered. Earlier this year, I praised their Black Cats collection as a fine release for any label, but that’s proven to be just the tip of this Arrow (sorry).

Following that impressive box, a half dozen gialli have graced Blu-ray disc beneath their label in 2016, and I’m hard-pressed to choose a favorite among them. In fact, the titles in this article work to encapsulate the different kinds of gialli that await you, should you venture into these bloodstained waters. From pulp trash to high art, and a few instances in between, Arrow ran the gamut this year.

Death Walks Twice: Two Films By Luciano Ercoli

death-walks

In some ways, Arrow’s Death Walks Twice: Two Films By Luciano Ercoli collection is the least impressive of these films, but that’s really only because they appease seasoned fans more than nubile converts. And since my pair of black gloves are well worn and cracked, I don’t mind telling you that this trashy double feature is more than a little wonderful.

Death Walks on High Heels can’t seem to decide on what type of thriller it wants to be, so it settles for trying on all subgenres at once. It begins with the murder of a man on a train and turns into a pulpy thriller about missing diamonds, marital infidelity, and hapless police officers trying to fit the puzzle pieces together. It’s all very Italian—and by that I mean nonsensical but entertaining, with beautiful locales and gorgeous women in abundance.

Death Walks at Midnight features a madman with a spiked glove weapon—at least it might. Part of its charm hinges on the plot point that our heroine is given an experimental form of LSD that has enabled her to hallucinate a gruesome murder. But did it happen? Taking a trippy page from Lucio Fulci’s superior A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin, this psychedelic giallo lacks the kitchen sink approach of Ercoli’s other thriller, but ratchets up the violence and delivers the most sinister giallo killer weapon since Bava’s Blood and Black Lace.

This isn’t the first time these movies have been available together in the United States, as both Death Walks on High Heels and Death Walks at Midnight were bundled in the mid-2000s by flash-in-the-pan DVD barons No Shame Films. Those extras carry over, but Arrow has produced new ones too, including interviews with screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi (spread across both discs) and composer Stelvio Cipriani. The standard Arrow box set, a sturdy chipboard offering that houses two full sized disc cases and an attractive booklet, adds a lot of class to this collection.

The other gialli duo, and my favorite of the three giallo boxes that Arrow as released thus far, is Killer Dames: Two Gothic Chillers By Emilio P. Miraglia. For someone looking to step outside the obvious mainstays of Argento and Bava to see what else the giallo has to offer, this is among the best places to start.

The Night Evelyn Came Out of Her Grave feels brazenly misogynistic, although that’s by design. The ‘hook’ is that the lord of an isolated country manor spends his evenings torturing and killing beautiful women—anyone who reminds him of his deceased wife is a goner. That’s not so uncommon for this type of film, right? But in typical unconventional fashion, this guy turns out to be our hero. Yes, those wonderfully loopy Italians have produced a thriller in which our protagonist is a fanatical murderer. It’s exactly why I love them.

Miraglia’s thrillers are a yin and yang, though, because while The Night Evelyn Came Out of Her Grave operates under a heightened state of intentional misogyny, his follow-up thriller, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times plays like the polar opposite.

It still offers everything you expect: infidelity, blackmail, rape, accidental death and murder—these things are mainstays. But the elements are blended into a pulpy storyline of two sisters and a cloaked killer—all of whom are linked to a mysterious piece of artwork. Miraglia’s visual palette is pleasing to the eye, and this boasts some of the greatest supporting characters in the genre. Sybil Danning appears (sans clothing) as a scheming opportunist and, as the film’s only major male character, Ugo Pagliai, is a blast as a sex-crazed male.

These two films are very different, narratively and stylistically. Red Queen (the slightly better of the two) is more ‘metropolitan’, with much of the action confined to chic, urban environments, while Evelyn basks in rich, gothic atmosphere where Miraglia makes oppressive use of the chief setting.

Sadly, like Luciano Ercoli, Emilio Miraglia’s foray into giallo cinema was short-lived spanning these two films only. For archival purposes, his work fits neatly into one of Arrow’s boxed collections. All of the extras from No Shame’s prior set have been ported over (sadly, the Red Queen statuette was not recreated for this release), and new interviews have been produced (including chats with the stunning Sybil Danning, and Nightmare USA author Stephen Thrower). These movies look and sound fantastic—exactly the kind of treatment you’d expect from Arrow.

Blood & Black Lace

Because Arrow has been crushing these releases, it’s a relief that their long awaited Blood and Black Lace Blu-ray finally made its way to North American shores.blood-and-black-lace

Originally intended to be one of their US debut titles, they hit a legal snag that prevented its release for some time. UK audiences have enjoyed this release for well over a year, though, so it’s high time us stateside folks get to join in the fun.

Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace may not be the first giallo title (the director’s own The Girl Who Knew Too Much bears that distinction), but it stands as one of the most influential on the genre to come. One look at this, with its blinding color palette and aggressive pursuit of style over substance, predicts the entire career of Dario Argento. Nobody does giallo better than Argento, but Blood and Black Lace is a force to be reckoned with, especially because it predates the rush of giallo productions by nearly six years.

Its premise nearly defines an entire genre. Just as people forever associate Halloween’s aesthetic of hormonal teenagers stalked by a madman in a scary mask with the slasher, it’s the tropes within Blood and Black Lace that are ground zero for the movement. This has the sinister killer stalking fashion models across an over-stylized Italian cityscape, packs outlandish plot twists and police procedural into a movie that moves like a bullet and is endlessly entertaining.

Almost as good as the film itself is Arrow’s disc. Technical merits are strong and satisfying, and the supplements are stellar. Tim Lucas offers an audio commentary track and for as often as I’ve read Lucas over the years (and I’ve read just about every word he’s said about Mario Bava), this is an enthralling discussion for giallo junkies. I love this movie, but Lucas’ dissection offered up additional layers I hadn’t considered.

There’s also a pair of documentaries on here that rank among my favorite extras I’ve seen in some time. The Psycho Analysis documentary covers the history of the giallo thriller with plenty of participation from key players, while Gender and Giallo looks at the differences in these titles based upon the gender of their protagonist. If you’ve purchased all of these Arrow sets, especially the Miraglia one, this feature makes for a fascinating companion piece.

One of the best movies of this type is one of the best releases of the year. Buy all of the films in this article, but if you only get one, this is where your hard-earned money needs to go.

The Bloodstained Butterfly

bloodstained-butterflyuGoing into this review, Duccio Tessari’s The Bloodstained Butterfly was the only film I hadn’t seen. I’m not going to contest its giallo label, although I’d argue its inclusion in the subgenre is fringe-y. It’s a good film, and certainly of note to those who may enjoy seeing genre elements working inside a more traditional police procedural.

After a killing in a city park, a television sports commentator is taken into custody for the grisly stabbing. It turns out the reporter’s daughter was friends with the victim and she’s pulled into a web of intrigue that finds her questioning first the hasty arrest of her dad, and eventually, his guilt. Of course, the victim also had a lover in top billed Helmut Berger, and he hasn’t exactly been taking her death all that well.

At first this seems like a pretty standard exploration of an innocent man’s condemnation, but Tessari is more interested in twisting the story back on itself. While the suspect is in custody two more killings occur, which forces the police to release him. But this is just the beginning of a mystery keeps you guessing. This is a difficult movie to predict, and important clues surface as vague details, as if Tessari is daring us to sift through the evidence ourselves.

It’s also an interesting watch in this age of CSI spin offs and DNA evidence. Seen through a modern lens, the investigative aspects come off either laughably quaint, or historically fascinating. I lean toward the latter, because it’s always fun to see how this stuff worked in other eras. Maybe this is an experience for more seasoned fans looking to be completionists, but this hybrid of horror film and legal thriller has enough to recommend even if it’s a bit less sordid than the other titles that Arrow has released.

In a single year, Arrow has become a one-stop shop for all your giallio needs, and I hope they’re just getting started. With the exception of the slasher film, I can never have enough gialli in my life. These packages, with attractive artwork, fantastic presentations, and killer supplements are as good as they get. More please.

The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center is planned to be opened at the World Trade Center Complex in 2020, and horror fans might find that the proof of concept model of it looks somewhat familiar.

Take a peek below:

Notice it? If not, here’s a picture of the Hellraiser puzzle box:

So yeah, architect Joshua Prince-Ramus is probably a hardcore Hellraiser fan (I just hope he hasn’t seen Revelations). In an AP interview posted by Time, he said that the design of the building is based on a “mystery box,” but thanks to the tons of horror fans on the web, it’s not so mysterious anymore. He clearly has more respect for the series than the Weinsteins ever did.

Made out of translucent, veined marble and glass, during the day the building will have a dull sheen. But at night the three-level building will illuminate like a paper lantern.
