Film4 is in discussions with potential co-financiers for the Kill List and Sightseers director’s planned cops-and-monsters film Freakshift. Yeah, that's not a lot to go on, but we'll take it! Expect to hear more on the flick soon. If all goes well, the project is likely to shoot in spring 2013.

Deadline reports that Trank has signed with Sony Pictures to develop and direct Shadow of the Colossus, a big scale live action adaptation of the bestselling Sony videogame. The film is being produced by Kevin Misher. The studio is interviewing writers to work with Trank, who after directing the $13 million sleeper hit Chronicle has become the go-to guy for big popcorn pictures. The price for bringing back his girl: slay 16 colossi that dominate this mystical place. These are skyscraper-sized giants that rise from the ground, fly through the air, and come from the water. As the young man works through his quest on horseback, he begins to wonder if he is on a noble pursuit to bring back his lover or perhaps has made a deal with the devil and is being used.

Trank has been a fan of the game since it launched in 2005 and sought out the job.

To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Stephen King and Joe Hill Collaborating on a Story for Esquire Magazine's Fiction for Men

Stephen King and Joe Hill Collaborating on a Story for Esquire Magazine's Fiction for MenWe're not entirely sure what Esquire has in mind for its new ebook series "Fiction for Men", but as part of the launch they will be publishing a new story collaboration by father and son team Stephen King and Joe Hill entitled "In the Tall Grass". Hopefully women will be allowed to read it, too!

Per King's official site the story will be published in two parts, the first appearing in the magazine's June/July issue with the conclusion coming in the August issue. Joining King and Hill in the June/July issue will be thriller writer Lee Child (the Jack Reacher series) and Colum McCann (Let the Great World Spin). The works will be available only in the print and iPad editions of the magazine.

Nothing else is known about the King/Hill story, but let's get back to this "Fiction for Men" thing for a moment. According to The New York Times, David Granger, the editor-in-chief of Esquire, said he has lamented the loss of space that magazines devote to publishing fiction. "It’s a struggle because, especially during the recession, we lost so many pages," Granger elaborated. "Fiction begins to feel a little bit of a luxury." His definition of men’s fiction? Work that is "plot-driven and exciting, where one thing happens after another, and, also at the same time, dealing with passages in a man’s life that seem common."

The first volume of the series includes new short stories by Aaron Gwyn, Luis Alberto Urrea, and Jess Walter; and the stories will be sold only in ebook format in collaboration with Open Road Integrated Media, a digital publisher, beginning June 12. (Another volume will follow every few months.)

All jokes about the name of Esquire's project aside, anything that gets King writing and people reading is A-ok with us!

Predestination Finds DistroMore distribution news is coming out of Cannes as Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired domestic and select international rights to Michael and Peter Spierig's sci-fi action-thriller Predestination, which will reunite the siblings with their Daybreakers star Ethan Hawke.

The Spierig brothers wrote the original screenplay, which chronicles the life of a temporal government agent sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to stop future killers.

The directing duo will produce with Brisbane-based Patrick McDonald of Wolfhound Pictures and Tim McGahan of Blacklab Entertainment. The flick is slated to start production early next year in Australia.

"Predestination is based on the classic Robert A. Heinlein short story 'All You Zombies.' No, it's not a zombie flick, but it's one of our favorite short stories and is unlike anything you've ever read before," said the Spierig brothers. "The short is on many sci-fi lists as one of the greatest short stories of all time and the mother of all time paradox tales. Heinlein is considered one of the great science fiction masters alongside Phillip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke."

Exclusive: Steven C. Miller and Vincent Guastini Talk Silent Night; New Photos!

$

0

With Steven C. Miller’s slasher Santa flick Silent Night having wrapped last month in Winnipeg, we chatted with the director regarding the feature, as we also did with makeup guru Vincent Guastini, both of whom gave us the lowdown on the FX-heavy flick, its slated release date, and more.

“We shot it in seventeen days,” Miller, whose feature The Aggression Scale released earlier this week to video via Anchor Bay, told us of Silent Night, which stars veteran actor Malcolm McDowell, Jaime King (Sin City), Jamie Kennedy (Scream), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D) and Ellen Wong and serves as a loose remake of Charles E. Sellier, Jr.’s controversial 1984 slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night. The originator revolved around an unhinged teenager who embarks on an axe murder spree while dressed as Saint Nick.

“We didn’t get to shoot full twelve-hour days for most of it; they were nine-hour days,” continued Miller of the production, the narrative of which revolves around King’s character of Deputy Sheriff Aubrey Bradimore, who battles a killer Santa who terrorizes her small Midwestern town. “So it was a heavy shoot given the time frame and the amount of practical effects that we did.”

Of the last night of shooting, “It was great!” said Miller the following day. “We had a lot of blood and a lot of fun and an axe through a face. The actual last shot of the movie was to split that head open.”

Concerning the execution of that gag, FX artist Guastini (whose shop V.G.P. Effects handled the gore) offered, “We had one take, and it was the last shot of the night and the producer of Se7en (Richard Saperstein) was watching me. I'm the one that axed the head. We had a huge array of tubing in the head and all hands on deck to pump the blood. There were up to seven people operating this thing. It was done with magnets and cables, and it was designed to handle twenty or more takes, and we only did one. I must say that the head really came apart on cue.”

“I think the great thing about the script is that it incorporates some things, especially with practical effects, that maybe haven’t been seen onscreen in a while since the 80’s, like practically exploding that head open,” director Miller mused of the Jayson Rothwell screenplay and its inherent gore. “We also do homage some kills from the original movie, like the ‘antler kill’, which I think audiences will get excited about.”

“That gag was approached as a two-part effect,” Guastini stated of his recreation, “one that involved a silicone torso for piercing, which had a complicated rig, and an array of tubing. The other part involved the actress wearing a prosthetic we’d created expressly for the shot.”

“The biggest challenge was to get the effects to work in one take,” continued Guastini. “I hate those situations, but that's the result I try and strive for. All of the prep work and rigging that I designed and built with magnets and cables were basic but very creative I felt, and everything was designed for multiple takes and also to be able to be shot as precisely as possible, knowing how fast things were to move on set.”

At the center of Silent Night is actress King, well known to genre fans for her turns in the feature films Sin City, Mother’s Day and The Tripper (and to the mainstream for her role in the television series "Hart of Dixie"), and we queried Miller on his experience working her.

“Jaime is an actress that has no problem just being in character, and it’s absolutely amazing to see her work that way,” reflected Miller. “In a movie like this it’s pretty difficult for an actor to keep themselves in that very serious mindset when they are dealing with a Santa Claus with an axe, so there’s a balance you need to find because there is that line of ‘goofy or not.’ She approached her performance with a serious tone, which created a scary atmosphere, and I think she did a great job with that.”

“On the other hand you have Malcolm’s character, who is supposed to be over-the-top,” Miller stated of actor McDowell, “and his lines in the script were so ridiculous that I always thought that whoever was to play the character was going to have such a hard time, but every time Malcolm would say them they sounded badass!”

“He’s one of those actors that is able to make a character his own, and he’s 100% capable in a really great way,” the filmmaker continued. “He has a great personality and a great presence on screen, and he’s wonderful to work with. He’s an old-school actor that understands the process of making movies.”

As for his thoughts on working with the veteran, who as a self-avowed genre fan Miller spent his earlier years watching his work in myriad flicks from Clockwork Orange to Rob Zombie’s Halloween, “It’s crazy when you work with someone like Malcolm that you grew up watching, especially if they were in a film like Clockwork. That’s one of my favorite movies of all time, and yeah, we have a fun homage to Clockwork in this movie.”

Of the intended look of Silent Night, “[Cinematographer] Joseph White definitely made the film dark like I wanted it to be,” stated Miller, “and we really tried to make the film feel like a classic 80’s slasher, too, but also give it a very nuanced feel. The art direction was really great, too, and there’s a fantastic look to it. The producers really gave me the ability to expand and to do what I felt like in regards to what the movie needed, and everyone was really on board with what I was doing, so there was never really a fight. When you are making a film in seventeen days, you really don’t have time to argue.”

That shortened schedule has continued for Miller into the post-production phase as well.

“I have four weeks for a director’s cut, and it has to be completely done and delivered by August 17th for a December 7th release,” the director offered. “It’s crazy fast, but I guess that’s the model these days so that they can get it out and make some money, so I understand that outlook. It’s my job to bring it in, in that amount of time.”

So is Miller happy with how Silent Night is cutting together?

“I really am,” he said. “The great thing about this film is that it’s the most days I’ve had to shoot a film, and I’ve made four movies, so I am used to that pacing and time, and I’m also an editor by background so there’s not a lot of extraneous shots. It’s very much what I felt needed to be there, and I feel like everything I shot will make it into the movie. You have to be extremely precise, and it’s definitely an editor’s movie because you are shooting it with that in mind. It’s a strange thing, but it’s also fun, and I think it keeps everyone excited on-set and everyone constantly moving.”

As for what’s next on Miller’s plate (his other feature directorial credits include Automaton Transfusion and the upcoming Under the Bed), he told us, “I am working on basically a post-apocalyptic Fight Club/District 9-type movie, so that’s my next venture, which is to move more into the action world. Something a little bit bigger then seventeen days would be nice so I’m making a big step. The script is currently untitled. It’s a really cool spin on genre films in a huge action sort of way, and it will definitely need some time and money [to produce].”

What to Expect from Kevin Williamson's The Following

$

0

What to Expect from Kevin Williamson's The FollowingWe're pretty excited to see Kevin Williamson's new TV project, "The Following", and from the sound of things he's just as excited for us to see it! Read on for a few more details of what we can expect.

During a recent interview with IGN, Williamson shared the following info on the series, which is heading to Fox at midseason, airing on Monday nights:

Regarding his inspiration for the show, Williamson said, "Well, I had the story - I was working on it 16 or 17 years ago. I was writing Scream, and this idea came to me at the same time. I put it in a box and didn’t deal with it until now. So I had tried to develop it as a series before, then I tried to develop it as a feature film, then I tried to develop it as a graphic novel -- nothing quite worked. And then the time felt right, and I did it."

As for the killer's reach ("The Following" follows an ex-FBI agent (Kevin Bacon) called out of retirement to track down a devious and diabolical serial killer (James Purefoy), the mastermind behind a nationwide string of murder), Williamson didn't want to give a lot away but did share that "it does seem to stretch from coast to coast to some degree. We’re dealing with a man who, while he was in prison...had Internet access through a weird, weird chain of events. He never should have had Internet access, but he did. And because of that they don’t know who he was contacting. So that’s kind of the conceit, and that could be anyone in the world."

Lastly, it sounds as though Williamson foresees "The Following" running for more than just the 15-episode first season, explaining, "I have this season pretty much worked out and next season, because I know how big we’re gonna get, where the break-off point is gonna be, what the jeopardy and the stakes [are] -- once you see the pilot, you’ll understand when I say that it actually kind of writes itself in terms of the framework of the first season. The serial killer lays it all out. And so the first season will be watching that happen, and then we’ll watch how our FBI team and Kevin Bacon’s character has to constantly stay one step ahead of him. Because a lot of the time they’re behind. That’ll be the whole show. It was the fun of '24' - Kiefer Sutherland always had a problem to solve, and that’s the same here. They just have to stop it before one more person dies. And unfortunately... a lot of people are going to die."

Synopsis:
THE FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? Welcome to THE FOLLOWING, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and director Marcos Siega (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dexter”).

When notorious serial killer JOE CARROLL (James Purefoy, “Rome”) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent RYAN HARDY (Emmy-nominated actor Kevin Bacon, X-Men: First Class) to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Hardy is a walking textbook of all-things Carroll. He knows him better than anyone; he is perhaps Carroll’s only psychological and intellectual match. But the Ryan Hardy who broke the Carroll case years ago isn’t the same man today. Wounded both physically and mentally by his previous pursuit of this serial killer, it’s been a long time since Hardy has been in the field. This investigation is his redemption, his call to action. In contrast to nine years ago, Hardy isn’t calling the shots on this case. He works closely with an FBI team, which includes all-business and tough-as-nails JENNIFER MASON (Jeananne Goossen, The Vow, "Alcatraz") and young, razor-sharp MIKE WESTON (Shawn Ashmore, X-Men).

The team considers Hardy to be more of a liability than an asset. But Hardy proves his worth when he uncovers that Carroll was covertly communicating with a network of killers in the outside world. It quickly becomes obvious that he has more planned than just a prison escape, and there’s no telling how many additional killers are out there. The FBI’s investigation leads Hardy to CLAIRE MATTHEWS (Natalie Zea, “Justified”), Carroll’s ex-wife and mother of the criminal’s 10-year-old son, JOEY (newcomer Kyle Catlett). Close during Hardy’s initial investigation, Hardy turns to Claire for insight into Carroll’s next move. The tension rises when Carroll’s accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Hardy becomes ever more determined to end Carroll’s game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started. The thriller will follow Hardy and the FBI as they are challenged with the ever-growing web of murder around them, masterminded by the devious Carroll, who dreams of writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist. Have a Look at My Comatose Mother Director's Electric Light

Filmmaker Jonathan Martin, whose short film An Evening With My Comatose Mother has racked up 67 film festival awards and is now slated for a big-budget feature version, gave us a look today at the "Electric Light" music video he directed for the band Muscle Hawk. Check it out!

Written, directed and produced by Martin with cinematography by Derek Pueblo, the filmmaker collaborated with his Comatose co-conspirators Chris Hanson (Makeup Effects) and Alex Johnson (Visual Effects), as he did with editor Jeff Yeats, with whom he co-edited. Rachael Domingo and Kish Carter provided the outlandish costumes as worn by the video’s creatures.

Shot over the course of three days in Utah, Martin told us of the "Electric Light" production, “This video is a labor of love. It contains all the things I love: sci-fi, portals, film references, great parties, great music, sexy and creepy aliens, and more. I hope you enjoy the video and love it as much as I enjoyed making it."

As for An Evening With My Comatose Mother (which in this writer’s estimation is the perfect companion to another film which deserves much more recognition: Michael Dougherty’s fantastic Trick 'r Treat), “A feature film is very much in the works and is potentially days away from an official greenlight,” said Martin. “Until then, not much can be said outside of the fact that a highly respected actor is attached, more are in talks, the film will be shot in 3D, distribution talks have already begun and it will definitely not be a low-budget horror film.”
