Demons and Gods Await in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse; Available Now

If Dark Souls 3 left you hungry for more violent Japanese RPGs, then check out Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. The gods vs. demons post-apocalyptic RPG’s just been released on the 3DS, in typical J-RPG style, expect it to last you a very, very long time.

Demons and Gods Await in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
The story of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is one of human pawns being shuffled across a chessboard by the higher deities. One lone Hunter, the game’s protagonist, meets an early demise and through a pact with a lesser god, is brought back to life in exchange for his pledge of servitude. From there, the protagonist allies with other Hunters in the ruins of post-apocalyptic Tokyo beginning a plot that crosses over with the events of the original Shin Megami Tensei IV.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse features:

• The Eternal Struggle Between Gods– The Shin Megami Tensei series, known for exploring the tenuous symbiosis between man and deity , reaches deeper than ever in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, as the band of main characters must decide which side of peace or anarchy they are on.
• Partner Up for Success – A new twist on the SMTIV combat formula allows players to bring one of seven partners to battle (in addition to the standard three demons), each with their own unique skills and AI. Plus, partners will fill up a meter that will interrupt the enemy, do massive damage, and give players an extra turn. Given the excruciating difficulty of battles in Shin Megami Tensei, the partner system will allow for new player strategies.
• Demons Aplenty – Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse has a series record 450+ demons to fight, fuse, or recruit to player parties. With demons from a wide selection of cultures and religions to choose from, players will be able to customize their party to their liking.
• Fuse For Affinities – Demon fusion, combining two or more demons to form a more powerful one, is one of the cornerstones of Shin Megami Tensei games, and now demons will have affinities for certain skills, giving players more decisions to make about which skills fusions will inherit.
• Press Turns and Smirking – The Press Turn system returns, which gives players (or enemies!) extra turns for exploiting weaknesses. The Smirk system returns as well, which gives huge offensive and defensive boosts to party members (or enemies) and now unlocks bonuses for certain skills, such as insta-kill attacks.

Titan Comics Bringing Back 2000 AD’s Most Controversial Shark

0
0

On Valentine’s Day, 1976, iconic comics publisher 2000 AD unleashed their very first issue of their controversial Action series. The series was inspired by popular films relevant to the time period, so for issue #1 they decided to try and give Bruce the Shark from Jaws (1975) a run for his money with their own toothy antagonist – Hookjaw.

“Hookjaw” was the most popular strip in the anthology, and the great white shark’s bloody exploits helped initiate a media uproar. The comic was even brought up in the House of Commons, which subsequently led to calls for banning and as such, it was pulled from shelves across the country.

Action predated the 1980’s moral panic that came with the boom of Video Nasties, proving that Hookjaw was a shark with too much bite for some people. Fast forward to 40 years later, and old Action issues are selling for more than your mom on eBay.

And he’s about to return…

Titan Comics are set to publish a brand new five issue mini-series this December, dedicated entirely to the ferocious shark.

The new arc will be written by the Si Spurrier (Cry Havoc, Weavers, Doctor WhoNumbercruncher) and illustrated by newcomer Conor Boyle.

The new series also features a groovy range of variant covers to collect from super rad artists including; Conor Boyle, John McCrea (The Mummy), Marc Laming (Uncanny Avengers), Anna Dittmann, and Steve White.

Irish Horror Film Ventures Beyond The Woods

We love everything Irish round these parts (who doesn’t?), and so we’re really loving the trailer for the Irish horror film Beyond the Woods from director Sean Breathnach.

The film stars Irene Kelleher (“Game of Thrones”), Ross Mac Mahon (“Penny Dreadful”) and Claire Loy (Casualty). The film recieves its home premiere at Indie Cork Film Festival in October, and it’s also screening at Fright Night Film Festival in Kentucky in November – currently a USA premiere.

Written and directed by Breathnach, Beyond the Woods tells the story of a gang of friends who meet up for a weekend away in an isolated holiday home in the middle of a forest. Unfortunately for them a fiery sink-hole has opened nearby, roads have been closed and there’s a real stench of sulphur. The friends won’t let a small thing like that spoil their plans to party, but as the weekend progresses some of them start acting out of character, one goes missing and little by little they realize that it’s not just a sinkhole that opened up nearby but something altogether more horrific.

danifilth-1We’ve been telling you about the upcoming film Baphomet for a while now, but finally production has officially commenced, and we have an update from writer/director Matthan Harris, including some very interesting casting news!

Per Harris, “We had a very exciting three-day shoot in Los Angeles with the talented Pedro Avila as the film’s cinematographer. Then I immediately flew to London for a fourth day of shooting with Dani Filth (pictured right), frontman of extreme metal band Cradle of Filth. Dani plays occult expert Lon Carlson, and he did an amazing job bringing the character to life. For the London shoot we were joined by longtime Cradle of Filth collaborator Ross Bolidai (director of Cradle of Filth music videos ‘Lilith Immaculate’ and ‘For Your Vulgar Delectation’).”

“After the shoot,” he continues, “we went to the east side of London for sushi and drinks (see photo below). It was especially awesome and surreal to walk the streets of London at night and have Dani point out the spot where Jack the Ripper killed his final victim.”

The rest of Baphomet will be shot next year so stay tuned for more announcements.

Harris serves as writer, director, co-star, and producer with Incisive Pictures on Baphomet. For more info and updates, keep your eyes on the Baphomet Facebook page.

Event Report: The Exorcist TV Show Launch Party at the Hollywood Escape Hotel

0

The Exorcist, based on a bestselling novel, broke box office records and terrified audiences around the world when it came out in 1973. Now, more than four decades after the Academy Award-nominated film scared everyone half to death, “The Exorcist” returns as a TV series, premiering tonight.

They say they’re making it more of a “psychological thriller” by following two very different priests tackling one family’s case of demonic possession. Separately each faces an insurmountable task, but together they become the only hope against an evil force that has been mobilizing for centuries.

We caught up with Alan Ruck, one of the stars of the series, and got the satanic skinny on his role. “I play Henry Rance, and my wife is Angela, who is played by the lovely Geena Davis. We have two adult daughters, 19 and 21; and our household, unfortunately, is visited by the forces of evil.” Hate when that happens. “As the series goes on, you’ll find out Henry suffered from an accident, and now he is suffering from a post-traumatic brain injury. He’s got a lot of things going on – he falls asleep a lot, he has memory lapses, he has bursts of anger, and he has these things called absence seizures. He’s not completely himself.”

He elaborates, “In the pilot, the young priest, Father Tomas, asks Angela, ‘How’s Henry doing?’ And she says, ‘He has good days and he has bad days.’ So all these things are going on in this household. One of the daughters is involved in a terrible accident, another daughter is… well, there’s a lot of things going on. So poor Angela, she’s really got a lot to deal with. So she turns to the priest, Father Tomas, who is played by Alfonso Herrera, and he comes into contact with an exorcist, and that’s all I can say without spoiling it.”

alan_ruck_escapeevent

As mentioned above, the show premieres tonight (September 23rd) on FOX, so last night the network threw a big bash at the trendy new Hollywood Escape Hotel, which isn’t a hotel at all. You won’t spend the night there and you won’t have room service. But you will have a room… a very scary one, sealed tight until you can unlock its secrets and free yourself. Each room has a different theme – they range from a mafia bunker to a haunted nursery. Last night, of course, we were ushered into the “Exorcist Experience.”

In case you’re not familiar with the term, an “escape room” is a physical adventure game in which approximately a dozen players are locked in a chamber and have to use elements of the decor to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit. In the “Exorcist Experience,” the first thing one sees is a video hosted by Alan Ruck and Geena Davis, warning you that you’d better be very careful, or you just might find yourself locked in the room with Satan’s soldiers forever. Then you make your way to a church set complete with pews, a pulpit, and stained glass, all of which contain clues that compel you into other areas of the chamber… priests lead the way, and possessed little girls try to deter you from finding salvation.

escape-hotel-hollywood-2

Once saved and escaped, you make your way back into the main part of the Escape Hotel, where there is a bar and bites, plus a kitschy photo booth with props and an elegant upstairs area. It’s upstairs where we chatted with Ruck about the show. Even though it’s billed as a psychological thriller, he feels it’s going to be scary enough to satisfy horror fans. “There are some big scares in it – just the fact that we’re dealing with demons and the devil and the supernatural. There are some shocking and horrific things – people are definitely going to get their scare on! But the show also operates as a psychological thriller because it focuses on ordinary people in extraordinarily brutal times.”

It’s set in modern times, but we don’t see them possessing cellphones. “Mostly the demons play by their own rules. They know things without needing wireless devices. They’re ahead of us that way.”

When asked how the show can do justice to such an iconic story, he says, “We have really fine writers, excellent directors, and we have a bunch of actors that are all bringing their A-game. I think the trick to it – and we’re trying to honor the spirit of the move; we’re not doing a remake – is to try and root it in reality as much as we can so that you or any other viewer would think, ‘I believe this could happen in my neighborhood… this could happen in my house.’ There are a few subtle and loving nods to the movie, so someone who’s seen the original a bunch of times or is an aficionado will catch those. It’s a different story, but we are operating in that universe where things like that can happen. We don’t have a Ouija board specifically, but there are definitely things like this in the series.”

Regardless of one’s religious background, The Exorcist stands as a monolith of fear. We asked Ruck to what he attributes the enduring fascination with the original movie. “In terms of cinematic effects, we’d never seen anything like that before, and they just seemed horribly real. And the actors were some of the best working in movies then and you never doubted anybody for a second, and so you felt like this was really happening. It was beautifully directed by William Friedkin. The director of our pilot and the concluding two episodes, Rupert Wyatt, said he felt Friedkin directed the film as an agnostic, and so as a filmmaker, he was making himself prove it could actually happen. So that’s the reason I think people, whether they are religious, spiritual, atheist, or not… it resonates because as human beings, the story of good vs. evil is the oldest story there is.”

escape-hotel-hollywood-1

If you want to see the oldest story there is, but with a new twist, be sure and check out the 10-episode series on FOX TONIGHT!

“The Exorcist” Episode 1.01 – “Chapter One: And Let My Cry Come Unto Thee” (airs 9/23/16, 9-10pm)
EVIL RETURNS IN THE ALL-NEW SERIES PREMIERE OF “THE EXORCIST” – Something is wrong in the Rance household. Angela Rance (Davis) suspects demonic possession and enlists the help of two priests: the progressive, but naïve Father Tomas Ortega (Herrera) and the broken holy warrior, Father Marcus Keane (Daniels). Together, they will be drawn into a nightmare beyond imagining.

Additional cast members include Alan Ruck as Henry Rance, Brianne Howey as Katherine Rance, Hannah Kasulka as Casey Rance, and Kurt Egyiawan as Father Bennett.

Grave VR Calls Itself the Silent Hill of VR Horror Games

0
0

Arriving just before Halloween, Grave VR from developer Broken Window Studios describes itself as being the “Silent Hill” of VR Horror Games”, which sounds pretty damn sweet. It actually serves as a prologue to an open world game which is simply called Grave, which will be released next year.

Grave VR rises on HTC Vive and PlayStation VR on October 25th.

From the Press Release:

This Halloween just got a little bit scarier with the announcement of Grave VR, a new psychological horror title set in a surrealist desert wasteland. The game has been built specifically for the HTC Vive and employs a variety of interactions reminiscent of their real-world counterparts, Such as lighting matches or pouring down gasoline. The game is intended to focus on the more visceral and frightening aspects of horror experiences, instead of the adrenaline and weaponry of many other titles.

“We see Grave VR as the ‘Silent Hill’ to the “Resident Evil” of other VR games, in that it’s more focused on tension and psychological horror,” says Broken Window Studios’ Creative Director, Tristan Parrish Moore. “We’re not looking to make the player feel powerful or give them a huge arsenal of weapons.” In fact, there aren’t any actual guns or traditional weapons in Grave VR. Instead of pistols, shotguns and uzis, players will be tasked with finding the right uses for items like matches, flashlights and flares. “Be careful, though,” Moore noted. “There are several different monsters in Grave VR, and while some may be afraid of your flashlight, others might be attracted to it. You’re going to need to pay attention if you want to survive.”

Grave VR is a loose prologue to Grave, a larger open world experience which has been in development since its successful Kickstarter in 2014. Grave VR more heavily emphasizes a story and progression than many VR titles, and features a unique node-based traversal system that sees players looking into the distance to pick where they want to go next, instead of being limited only to scripted waves of attacks. “We don’t want the players of Grave VR to forgo the campaign in favor of survival mode, although we definitely will be providing both options,” Moore said. “Our goal is to make the story mode as compelling, if not more, than any other way to play the game, while borrowing some of the things we love from classic survival horror.”

The small team at Broken Window Studios have been experimenting with VR since 2013, and are just coming off their recent win of the Global VR Challenge in Shanghai, China. Grave VR is an opportunity to demonstrate some of the more interesting things that can be done with immersive motion controls, before the larger game releases in 2017. Grave VR will be launching with support for SteamVR and the HTC Vive, but the team is eager to provide versions for Oculus Touch and Playstation VR in the coming months.

Players will be able to pick up Grave VR the week before Halloween, on Tuesday, October 25th. The title will also be launching with a 10% discount off the usual $19.99 price tag for anyone who picks it up before the holiday ends. “We figured that Vive users might want to invite their friends over for some spooky fun after the halloween parties, so we wanted to offer a little more incentive to pick up the game at launch. Why watch a scary movie when you can scare yourself in VR?”

Ryan Murphy Working on Secret Season of American Horror Story

0

The official plotline of “American Horror Story” Season 6 was kept hush-hush until it aired, revealing that we were headed into the mysterious setting of Roanoke, but that’s not all co-creator Ryan Murphy has up his sleeve!

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Murphy revealed that he’s been busy plotting a covert season of the FX hit. “It’s my secret season,” he says. “I’ve been working with a writer on a season that only he and I know. It’s like a two-year project that we’ll continue to work on the sly and not tell anybody.

Murphy says he isn’t sure when it will air — as he already knows what Season 7 of the hit FX show will look like (“AHS” has not yet been officially been renewed beyond the current Season 6). “I don’t know when it will [air], but it’s also an experiment,” he says of the secret season. “It’s a different way of doing it. It’s one person writing all episodes. I don’t know if it’s going to work, but it’s like, well, let’s try that. We might get them done and shoot them on the sly and drop it.

The current season, known as “American Horror Story: Roanoke,” airs Wednesdays at 10:00 PM on FX.

I Drink Your Blood in High Definition

0
0

We’ve been talking about Grindhouse Releasing bringing I Drink Your Blood to theaters for several weeks, but now we have the skinny on the film’s long-awaited Blu-ray release! Read on!

From the Press Release:
Grindhouse Releasing, the award-winning “Criterion of cult movie labels,” has set a November 8, 2016, street date for the new deluxe Blu-ray edition of David E. Durston’s gruesome and graphically violent 1971 horror favorite I DRINK YOUR BLOOD. It’s Night of the Living Dead meets the Manson Family in this gore-drenched tale of LSD-crazed hippies who go on a murderous rampage through a small town after consuming rabies-injected meat pies!

Grindhouse Releasing’s deluxe 2-disc Blu-ray set not only presents the ultra-violent, uncensored director’s cut of I DRINK YOUR BLOOD in a new hi-def transfer but also includes two more vintage exploitation films in their HD debut: Del Tenney’s I EAT YOUR SKIN (1964) and Durston’s long-unseen, X-rated psychedelic shocker BLUE SEXTET (1969). Packed with new bonus features not seen on Grindhouse Releasing’s 2002 DVD release, the I DRINK YOUR BLOOD Blu-ray is the ultimate edition of a notorious “Blood Horror” classic.

The first film to be rated X for violence, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD was a huge-grossing hit at drive-ins and “grindhouse” theaters but was severely censored during its original release.

The uncut, restored version of I DRINK YOUR BLOOD recently debuted at Landmark Theatres in New York and Los Angeles and is now playing at theaters and drive-ins across the U.S. and Canada.

“I DRINK YOUR BLOOD is one of the most infamous movies in the history of exploitation films,” says Grindhouse Releasing co-founder Bob Murawski. “Rescuing this lost gem was one of our most important achievements. And being able to finally unite I DRINK YOUR BLOOD with its legendary co-feature I EAT YOUR SKIN, both fully remastered in stunning HD for the very first time, takes that accomplishment one step further. We’ve spent almost a decade working on this release, and I feel it’s our finest yet. I’m also thrilled that so many theaters are playing I DRINK YOUR BLOOD. We’ve been trying to make this happen for years and have finally succeeded. Seeing this movie on the big screen with an audience is a mind-blowing experience. No self-respecting horror fan should miss this rare opportunity.”

I DRINK YOUR BLOOD stars Bhaskar, John Damon, and cult superstar Lynn Lowry (George A. Romero’s The Crazies, David Cronenberg’s They Came from Within, and Paul Schrader’s The Cat People).

A limited run of 3,000 copies of the Blu-ray will include the official “I DRINK YOUR BLOOD Horror Hypo” – an actual syringe that fans can use to infect their friends with rabies! Supplies of the Horror Hypo are not expected to last long, so fans should pre-order from DiabolikDVD.com to get the best shot at receiving one!

The I DRINK YOUR BLOOD Blu-ray is now available for pre-order exclusively at DiabolikDVD.com; hit that link to reserve your copy!

See a King Ghidorah Skeleton Crafted from KFC Chicken Bones

There’s no shortage of creativity out there, and what you’re about to see is the perfect example of someone taking trash and giving it a new lease on life! While you may not consider anything from KFC to be a work of art (we’re not even sure that it’s 100% chicken to be honest), it’s a good thing for us all that Japanese artist Hone Oyaji has a different perspective on the Colonel’s tastiest project.

After feasting on several buckets of KFC, Oyaji chose to assemble the remnants of his meal into a skeleton resembling one of Godzilla’s greatest foes, King Ghidorah. Check out his handiwork below, and just marvel at its majesty.

Somewhere right now, Leatherface is smiling. Quickly, someone get Oyaji a side order of paramedics and a charged up defibrillator!
