A director has been found to helm the pilot of TNT’s “Let the Right One In” as Deadline is reporting that “Doctor Who” and “Happy Valley” director Euros Lyn has been tapped to direct Jeff Davis’ new show based on the best-selling novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist.

“Let the Right One In” is an eerie drama about Henry, a young boy, long tormented by his classmates, who finds solace in a friendship with a charismatic vampire, Eli (Kristine Froseth), who appears to be near his age. Thin and pale, Eli’s actual age is unknown. Lonely and friendless (for obvious reasons), Eli lands in an apartment building in Vermont, and soon begins a strange friendship with Henry, an equally lonely 16-year-old boy who has no idea what kind of creature he’s dealing with.

“Teen Wolf” creator Davis wrote the script and serves as executive producer with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios and Simon Oakes of Hammer Films. The pilot is being produced by Tomorrow Studios in association with Turner’s Studio T.

Interview: John Jarratt Talks Returning to Wolf Creek for the Small Screen

Based on real-life events, Greg McLean’s original Wolf Creek introduced us to the churlish, wise-cracking, murderous psychopath, Mick Taylor, as he wreaked havoc on “woeful bloody tourists” in the Australian Outback. The movie went on to achieve global box office success and garnered a cult film status resulting in a much-anticipated sequel in 2013.

Well fans are now in for an even bigger slice of their antagonist of choice in the form of a six-part series based on the original movies, except this time, the tables have been turned on Mick.

Turning the slasher genre (and the Wolf Creek franchise as we know it) completely on its head, the new show comes brimming with gritty characters and an immersive story of revenge and good versus evil. An American family on holiday in Northern Australia soon find themselves the unsuspecting prey of Mick Taylor, but much to Mick’s chagrin, the daughter, Eve Thorogood (Lucy Fry), a young and athletic college student, survives the vicious slaughtering. Once discharged from hospital, she has only one thing on her mind: To bring her assailant to justice, no matter at what price that might come.

Ahead of the show’s impending airing on POP in the US and on DVD, Blu-ray & Digital HD in the UK, Dread caught up with John Jarratt to find out how the series expands on the Wolf Creek universe and why, after initial reticence, the script had him signing up to reprise his role as Mick in the swing of a Bowie knife…

opening-gate

Dread Central: On researching for the interview, I read that you were kind of reticent about the idea of a “Wolf Creek” TV show as you thought it might be milking the Mick Taylor cow a bit much.

John Jarratt: When Greg rang me to tell me he was thinking about putting it out as a six-part TV series, I just couldn’t see how it could work. I thought, “That’s getting a bit gratuitous now, isn’t it? That’s getting a bit Freddy Krueger.” But then Greg said that he had a great idea for it and sent me the script. I had to eat my words in the end as it was a really good script. It worked a treat, actually.

DC: What was it in the script that made you realize that a series wasn’t such a bad idea after all?

JJ: It was basically Lucy Fry’s story. It’s a revenge story. It’s like a female version of Unforgiven and she’s out to get the bad guy; and that’s why it worked so well. And then I turn up at regular intervals throughout the whole thing so the horror fans, whenever they see me, they get their little horror fix. And then it was so brilliantly put together by serving the horror up straight away to quieten up all the horror fans who we knew would be sitting there saying, “This is gonna be a piece of shit.” So we showed them that it wasn’t and that we were right up there. And then it was time to roll the titles, and on with this thriller and every time Mick turns up, we’re back into the horror show.

DC: You mentioned Freddy Krueger there and how you didn’t want Mick to turn into that type of character. Most horror icons that do have these speaky roles end up getting cheesier with each sequel. Mick has a fair amount of dialogue so I’m guessing you were very conscious about not letting his character go down the same kind of path as Freddy and company?

JJ: That’s what I was worried about, mate. That’s why I initially didn’t want to put him out for the sake of putting him out and picking up a check. Obviously, that’s always very tempting and I come from Australia where we haven’t got a massive population. And rich comes with population and even dickheads like Trump can get rich in a country with 200 million people in it. So I was reticent but the trick is to find something different within the very strict realms of who Mick Taylor is. He’s just this very one-dimensional person who does the same kind of thing all the time. So the trick is to find a groovy and unique way of doing that.

mick_taylor

DC: Was this “groovy” way of doing things down in the script when you read it or were they very open to you bringing your own ideas to Mick’s persona? I read that they asked you to do one particular scene where you were just growling and screaming but you refused to do that as you didn’t feel Mick would do that kind of thing.

JJ: The growling bit wasn’t actually in the script. That was just an idea that, because there’s six hours of the series, they would just occasionally flip to me growling or screaming like a wounded wolf or some bloody thing; I don’t know. And they had this creepy red light thing set up. So I said, “What’s going on here, dudes?” and they said they were just going to do a montage of me growling and yelling and swearing. So I said, “He never yells. He never runs.” I actually picked the yelling in the movies. In the first one, I yell when I head butt a girl for smashing up my truck. That’s the only thing that upsets him to the point where he yells. And the other time I yelled was in Wolf Creek 2 when the pommie calls me a faggot. He doesn’t like that! But Mick doesn’t lose it very often so I said, “He’s not like that so that would be lying to the character.” I suggested he might get drunk and do a crazy dance and so that’s what I did.

DC: So they were pretty open to what you thought would work best for Mick or did they try and keep you as close to the script as possible?

JJ: I couldn’t care less whether they were open to it or not. (laughs) If they wanted to make me do it, I’d tell them to fuck off. If I didn’t want to do anything, I’d say, “Well fine. Next scene.”

DC: Apart from your very clear ideas on how you wanted to portray Mick in the show, how instrumental was Greg McLean in the whole series as he only actually directed the final episode?

JJ: Yeah. That was another thing that I was a bit freaked out about. We are a bit like Simon and Garfunkel, you know? I thought, “I can’t do this without Greg there.” He plays lead guitar while I sing, you know? So I felt a bit strange about that but then I met this amazing dude that I got along with really well. He’s a very different kind of human being to Greg but a fun loving and enthusiastic guy called Tony Tilse.

DC: That’s right. He’s done some great work and recently directed some “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”

JJ: Yeah. He’s also done “Underbelly” here which is another six-part TV show. He’s done a ton of TV – top end TV; not soapies. But he’d really done his homework and he wanted to be true to the legend of the Wolf Creek films and he was fantastic. And Geoff Hall, the cinematographer, my God! He’s tremendous. So we were in very good hands.

At the same time, it was good that Greg had the final episode because that one sort of sits on its own whereas the first five is the journey. It worked really well.

lucy_fry_scream_wolf_creekDC: Most people who take on sinister roles often come out of a production saying that they discovered a side to them they never realized they had. Have you experienced that from playing Mick?

JJ: Well I was brought up in the bush in Central Queensland so I know those people. Mick Taylor is an impersonation of my dad with a serial killer and psychopath thrown in so I understand those big, bawdy Outback guys. My dad was 5 foot 8 and 95 kilos of blood and muscle. He was a chunk and a tough guy. But no, I don’t go into these dark areas. Maybe if I was playing a much darker role then I would but Mick doesn’t see himself as evil, he just sees these woeful bloody tourists as not being much better than introduced species like pigs so he doesn’t care too much for them. And it’s not hard to look back into history where people can wipe out other people and not blink and then go home and have dinner with their kids. You can go to the Holocaust or as far back as you want to go and the horrific ways that African-Americans were treated. It is part of the dark end of the human psyche, you know? So I didn’t tend to go to a dark place. I just played this character that I didn’t understand but that I found some way of justifying.

DC: When it did come to the darker moments of the show, how did you actually prepare with the rest of the cast? I hear you even sang creepy songs to the cast and crew before shooting some of those scenes.

JJ: Yeah. I’m pretty fit. I’m 64 and come from a tough family and I used to do three three-minute rounds and my brother was runner-up in Golden Gloves and I’ve choreographed a lot of fight scenes in my time. Thankfully, with all the actors I’ve worked with, I can smack ’em about. I’m still pretty quick and I can outspar them and give them a good slapping (laughs) and then have a go at them for being thirty or forty or something and getting beaten up by an old guy like me. No, I mistreat them basically (laughs). And Mick just has fun basically; he’s having the time of his life. It’s the people that I’m torturing, the actors, that go into dark places and scream and yell for most of the film. They’re the ones that go through hell.

lucy-looking-out

DC: Lucy goes to some VERY dark places. You were initially concerned that the role was going to be too tough for someone so young to pull off.

JJ: Well I met Lucy, this tall, skinny, blonde girl and she said (John puts on his Lucy Fry voice), “Oh, how are you John? Oh, I’m so excited!!!” And I said, “Who is this flowery little rainbow who’s gonna take me on?” But then, as soon as the clapperboard goes in and she goes into character, she’s as tough as! She’s a wonderful actor and she went there and she’s a really tough girl.

DC: The show starts off with some visceral gore, then focuses more on being a thriller before coming full circle to finish with plenty more off the charts gore. Was there ever a problem getting away with the violence for it to air on Stan in Australia?

JJ: Oh, we had to make it violent otherwise they’d turn off in droves. And they’d be pissed off and people like you would be saying, “What a pussy of a TV show. Why did they even bother?” It had to be full on. I mean, it would have been like saying, “Let’s do a remake of Fawlty Towers but without making it funny.” It’s ridiculous to be honest. (Laughs) We’re doing “Wolf Creek” here.

DC: Just to wrap up, John, I know you’ll be in Chris Sun’s Boar soon. Can you tell us a little bit about how you’re involved in that one?

JJ: Yeah. I’ve got this big hairy beard because we’ve got two days of bloody pick-ups so I’ve had to grow this beard while I’m speaking to you. I’ve got this big face of fungus. It’s all shot apart from that and I think it’s going to be a really great film. It’s a really good script. Usually those kinds of scripts are poor and pasty with the gratuitous dialog and ending on the big pig. But this one is very well put together and I’m hoping for big things. That should come out early 2017 I believe. And then I’m in another film called Red Dog: True Blue which is a follow up to Red Dog and that’s coming out on Boxing Day and I play Lang Hancock who’s a very well known iron magnate who’s not with us anymore but he was one of Australia’s richest guys.

DC: And then as far Wolf Creek‘s concerned, there have been constant rumors of a third feature and now talks of a second season of the show. What can you see coming first?

JJ: I think they’re looking seriously at another TV series so we’ll have to see how that pans out. If that comes on, we’ll have to do that first. I don’t think they’d take too kindly to us rocking up a movie to go up against the TV show.

DC: And do you think toing and froing between feature films and the TV show will work in your favor?

JJ: Yeah, I don’t see why not. As long as I don’t have to do it in a walking frame. I’m getting old. You know those little trolleys that people drive around in? We could have me drive around in one of those with a little bullbar and spotlights on it and I can go down the path and turn left into the Outback Old Persons Home. Now there’s an idea!

“Wolf Creek” will premiere exclusively in the US on Pop on Friday, October 14, at 10:00 PM ET/PT and releases on DVD, Blu-ray & Digital HD from 10th October, 2016 in the UK.

As further proof that “Walking Dead” executive producer Gale Anne Hurd never sleeps, Deadline is reporting that Amazon announced at New York Comic Con today that it has picked up acclaimed podcast Lore as a series. Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment and Propagate Content developed the Aaron Mahnke podcast into an unscripted horror anthology series.

I’m obsessed with horror and mythology,” Hurd told the crowd at NYCC in obvious understatement. “In bringing Lore to Amazon,” she added of her unscripted debut, “we are going to examine the truth behind the horror genre – something we love.

Hurd along with Propagate’s Ben Silverman and Howard Owens will EP the 10-episode first season of Lore. With Mahnke and Brett-Patrick Jenkins also serving as EPs and “X-Files” alum Glen Morgan as showrunner, the TV show version of the podcast is set to debut mid-2017.

Launched in March last year, Lore’s look at true-life scary stories, the paranormal and the origins of vampires, zombies and the horror genre in general now has over 3.2 million monthly listens.

Blumhouse’s Halloween Sequel Taking its Time to Get it Right

All has been quiet on the Halloween front since the initial announcement that Blumhouse would be behind the next film in the franchise with John Carpenter executive producing. Until now.

Our buddies over at Cinema Blend recently caught up with Jason Blum who offered the following update on the next Halloween.

We haven’t landed on an approach,” said Blum. “We haven’t landed on a filmmaker, and we haven’t landed on an approach. We thought we had a filmmaker and an approach, and we don’t. We’re talking to a handful of people about it — all of them have different ideas. I don’t believe in coming up with an idea and telling a filmmaker what to do. So we have three to five different people we’re talking with, and all of them have a different idea about what it should be. And we haven’t landed on a group, and as a result we haven’t landed on an idea.

Given the several storylines that lie within the franchise, I can understand them being careful as to which way to go. Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn into a Friday the 13th type scenario with no one being able to come up with a viable story line – when all it has to be is simply, “Kids show up in the woods. Jason dispatches them. Roll credits.

Ahead of its Sitges premiere we now have a new image from the remake of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s brutal French horror flick Inside. The 49th Sitges Film Festival takes place from October 7-16th. Inside will be the opening film.

Rachel Nichols and Laura Harring star. Miguel Ángel Vivas directs.

Produced by Adrian Guerra and Nuria Valls at Spain’s Nostromo Pictures, the remake was written by Manu Diez and [REC] creator/co-director Jaume Balaguero. “We took the original idea and made it an edge-of-your-seat thriller, more Hitchcockian than a splatter-fest,” said Guerra.

Synopsis:
Pregnant and depressed, a young widow tries to rebuild her life following the fateful car accident where she lost her husband and partially lost her hearing. Now, about to go into labor, she’s living in a remote house in the suburbs when, one Christmas night, she receives an unexpected visit from another woman with a devastating objective: to rip the child she’s carrying from inside her. But a mother’s fury when it comes to protecting her child should never be underestimated.

Legendary filmmaking icon, Roger Corman, is back with his most outrageous film yet in this sensational, action-packed and darkly humorous reboot of the original Death Race 2000! It’s the year 2050 and America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government ruled by The Chairman (Malcolm McDowell). The masses have been brainwashed with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the Death Race, in which a motley crew of violent drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for shamelessly running people over and driving each other off the road. The reigning champion and fan favorite, Frankenstein (Manu Bennett), who’s half-man half-machine, wants to take the crown, but his rebel spy co-pilot threatens his legacy.

Produced by Roger Corman, the king of cult classics, Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 stars Manu Bennett (The Hobbit) as Frankenstein and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) as the Chairman. The cast also features Burt Grinstead (“NCIS”), Marci Miller (Viper), Folake Olowofoyeku (The Beaver), Anessa Ramsey (Footloose), Yancy Butler (Hard Target) and Charlie Farrell (Cantar).

Special Features:

  • The Making of 2050 – This featurette goes behind the scenes of Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 to explore why, over four decades later, the original Death Race 2000 has been remade, including what made this project appealing to cast and crew, what changes have been made, and what fans of the original will still love. Discover the movie magic behind the deaths, stunts and of course — the cars! Includes interviews with stars, director G.J. Echternkamp and Corman himself.
  • Cars! Cars! Cars! – Go on the set with the drivers of Death Race 2050 as they introduce their one-of-a-kind killing machines: Frankenstein and his Monster, Perfectus and his Piece of Art, Tammy and the Tank, Minerva and her Sound Box and ABE.
  • The Look of 2050 – An insider look at how the film’s visual style came together, including how shooting in Peru helped set the tone of the picture and how the costumes became stars in and of themselves.

#NYCC16: Dead by Daylight Loves Halloween: See the New Teaser Trailer!

It’s amazing to me that a game like Dead by Daylight (review), where you can play with friends as survivors or become the killer, is largely a mystery to hardcore horror fans. Four killers (Trapper, Nurse, Hillbilly, and Wraith) hunt down survivors with the goal of impaling each one on massive hooks spread around an ultra-creepy environment.

Meeting the business end of one of those hooks summons “The Entity,” which is basically a colossal spider-god in the sky manifesting as massive spider legs that essentially stab the soul out of you. It’s good, clean family fun. The survivor’s goal is to turn on generators, open massive doors, and escape with your life! You get points for saving fellow survivors, powering up generators, thwarting the approach of a killer, and on and on. While playing as a killer, your points are scored in blood spilled and souls sacrificed. Suffice to say, playing as the killer rules.

This Halloween season the developers of Dead by Daylight throw a couple of familiar faces into the mix… Michael Myers and his final girl, Laurie Strode! Killers in the game have special skill sets to aid them in the night’s carnage (like teleportation, invisibility, following blood trails, and sensing when someone is attempting to heal himself), so a heavyweight like Myers had to have a skill that made him as unique as his iconic look. Myers “stalks” his prey, powering up by watching his intended victim (in an attempt to kill you by just creeping you out, no doubt) for as long as possible before his killing strike comes from out of nowhere with little warning. The game’s Myers is based solely on the original Halloween film so don’t expect oddball sound cues or goofy cops adding snappy banter to the mix.

The Myers addition comes with a new environment to hunt or be hunted in the streets of Haddonfield. While the developers did want to make the home where most of the classic film’s horror takes place as authentic as possible, the game mechanics come first, so while we are assured you will recognize the quiet little house on that quiet little street, horror diehards probably won’t want to put the whole thing under a microscope.

Speaking of details, since the original movie is set in the early 80’s, we asked if fantastic 70’s fashion would be incorporated into the game options. We were reminded that they had already brought 80’s fashion to survivors, so maybe down the line you’ll be able to rock a magnificent afro as you dodge chainsaws and machetes. We will be counting the minutes until that day comes.

Katie Keene Talks ClownTown!

With numerous arrests as of late, the creepy clown craze is alive and well in the Detroit metro area but it’s also starting to sweep the nation. In a fictional small town in ClownTown, killer clown maniacs have been embedded for quite some time, waiting to terrorize clueless out-of-towners.

One such tourist is actress Katie Keene who plays Jill – a character who takes her fair share of abuse by a maladjusted circus gang. Keene spoke to us recently about her very real fear of clowns and how she managed to fend off her assailants in ClownTown without losing her head.

Dread Central: I know a horror movie like this can be very demanding especially for the actresses.

Katie Keene: Very much so.

DC: How was the experience overall seeing how all of you were constantly being chased by psychotic killer clowns?

KK: What’s really funny is when we auditioned at first, you didn’t know it was about killer clowns. You just knew that it was an independent horror film. When they called me to tell me that I got the role, they said do you want to be in the movie? Then they said, okay, the first thing we need to tell you is it’s about killer clowns and I about died right there. Clowns are my biggest fear in the world! Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had this insane fear of clowns. It took me a minute and it really bothered me, to be honest. But I ended up doing it, and it is, it’s very demanding. It was rough on set for me, I literally have a legit fear of them. It was hard, I suffer from really bad night terrors as well, so it’s really funny that I make horror films for a living.

Katie Keene

DC: With movies like this, are we slowly making it so real clowns can’t get any work? I wouldn’t want these guys at my kid’s birthday party.

KK: Yeah, exactly. They’re not fun to look at. Even as an adult, it took me a second to ask, ‘Can I do this? Yes, Kate you can.’

DC: At one point, it looks like your character, Jill, is going to receive a pretty disturbing clown makeover. Were you disappointed at all that you didn’t get to play a little dress up and join the gang? The makeup and overall look of them is pretty effective.

KK: Oh yeah, absolutely, how fun would that be? I just think that’s such a disturbing scene there. How funny would it have been if Jill sort of turned to the dark side and became part of the gang?

DC: You could have been ClownTown’s Harley Quinn. You were really going for the title as a new Scream Queen. Did you ever go too overboard and lose your voice?

KK: Oh man, have I gone too overboard? Yeah. In the scene of ClownTown with me screaming at the tree, all I want to do is just shut me up! Why am I screaming so much? When you’re directed to scream, that’s all I can do is just let ‘em have it and that’s what I did.

DC: The big city is usually a lot more dangerous but most horror movies take place in remote places in the country or small towns. What’s scarier to you?

KK: I’m originally from a really small town in the middle of nowhere in Kentucky. So, that’s how I grew up. There aren’t even stop lights where I come from. So, I think it’s funny that that terrifies people, you know, the abandoned towns and the country bumpkin. In a sense, that’s what Clowntown gives, that really small town fear and fear of these backwoods clowns. That horrifies people and, for me, that’s just how I grew up in the woods being around hillbillies.

DC: With Rob Zombie’s 31 now available to rent, do you think that will help or hurt ClownTown? Are horror fans in danger of suffering from clown fatigue?

KK: When we first did ClownTown, we were kind of doing this thing first and then we got the big news that Rob Zombie is doing a clown movie. That’s kind of right when we were making it. Clowns are coming back! People are scared of them again and making movies about them again. I personally think it’ll help us. I think clowns are something that will forever scare people for times to come. I think it definitely helps us, I don’t think it hinders us at all. Obviously, it’s not a Rob Zombie film but we’re trying! If someone comes across ClownTown, how could they not click on it? So I think we’re gonna be groovin’.

Clowntown Release Details:
ITN Distribution, Inc., has acquired North American rights to the horror thriller CLOWNTOWN. Written by Jeff Miller (Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan) and directed by Tom Nagel (The Retrieval), the film stars Brian Nagel (Katy Perry’s “Roar”), Lauren Elise (Justin Lin’s Help), Andrew Staton (Relentless), Katie Keene (Union Furnace), Jeff Denton (The Beast of Bray Road), and Greg Violand (Batman v Superman).

CLOWNTOWN will roll out in theaters starting September 30, 2016, and on VOD and DVD on October 4, 2016.

CLOWNTOWN tells the story of a group of friends who get stranded in a seemingly abandoned town and find themselves stalked by a gang of violent psychopaths dressed as clowns. It is loosely inspired by the clowns who terrorized Bakersfield, California, in 2014.

CLOWNTOWN was produced by Jeff Miller, Tom Nagel, Brian Nagel, Christopher Lawrence Chapman, and Ronnie D. Lee. Robert Kurtzman (creator of From Dusk Till Dawn) co-produced. David H. Greathouse (Syfy’s “Face Off,” Tusk) handled the bulk of the makeup FX.

Archstone Distribution is handling foreign sales.
