Two more classic chills and thrills are coming their way to high definition as Kino Lorber have just announced Blu-ray releases of The Undying Monster and The Lodger.

THE LODGER (1944)
Blu-ray Street Date: November 22, 2016
Director: John Brahm
Starring: Merle Oberon, George Sanders, Laird Cregar, Sara Allgood, Sir Cedric Hardwicke

Synopsis:
Few film directors have mastered the art of suspense, thrills and intriguing plot twists the way that John Brahm (The Undying Monster) did – many consider his 1944 remake of the Alfred Hitchcock silent film about Jack the Ripper to be far superior to the original! After a mysterious young man named Slade (Laird Cregar, I Wake Up Screaming) rents a London flat, a murder spree begins nearby and the landlady suspects her new lodger to be Jack the Ripper. Kitty (Merle Oberon, Wuthering Heights), a talented singer ignores warnings about the crimes from her new love interest, Inspector John Warwick (George Sanders, Hangover Square) who’s assigned to the case – or the man who may have committed them and soon she becomes Slade’s object of obsession in this pulse-pounder that packs an unsettling punch. Featuring stunning cinematography by the great Lucien Ballard (A Kiss Before Dying) and great supporting performances by Sara Allgood (Blackmail) and Sir Cedric Hardwicke (Rope).

Special Features:

  • Audio Commentary by Film Historian Gregory William Mank
  • Audio Commentary by Film Historians Alain Silver and James Ursini
  • The Man In The Attic: The Making of The Lodger Featurette
  • The Lodger Vintage Radio Show Performed by Vincent Price and Cathy Lewis

    The Lodger

    THE UNDYING MONSTER (1942)
    Blu-ray Street Date: November 22, 2016
    Director: John Brahm
Starring: James Ellison, Heather Angel, John Howard, Heather Thatcher

    Synopsis:
Few film directors have mastered the art of suspense, thrills and intriguing plot twists the way that John Brahm (Hangover Square) did – when Helga Hammond (Heather Angel, The Informer) hears about a legend whereby a male member of her family is about to be sacrificed every few years, she discounts the legend as nonsense. But when Helga’s brother, Oliver (John Howard, Lost Horizon) is attacked by a horrific beast that is part man and part wolf, it appears that the legend is true. When Scotland Yard inspector (James Ellison, I Walked with a Zombie) investigates the link between the werewolf and the family, he discovers an even more shocking truth! One of the film’s key features is the gorgeous cinematography by the great Lucien Ballard (The Lodger).

    Special Features:

  • Audio Commentary by Film Historian Tom Weaver
  • Concerto Macabre: The Films Of John Brahm Featurette

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell how much horror fans love “Ash vs. Evil Dead” on Starz, which is probably why the network didn’t waste any time following the show’s Season 2 premiere this past weekend to announce that a third season is already confirmed.

Per Deadline, the announcement came at the currently under way New York Comic Con.  The 10-episode Season 3 should be arriving next fall around the same time that Seasons 1 and 2 debuted.

About “Ash vs. Evil Dead” Season 2:
Season 2 of the STARZ Original Series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” premiered October 2nd. Since Season 1, Ash has been living it up in Jacksonville, Florida, with his loyal sidekick Pablo and revenge-filled Kelly. Season 2 kicks off with a double-deadite battle royale interrupting the party; Ash is forced to return back to his hometown of Elk Grove, Michigan… and as always, Evil follows him.

The cast is led by Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) in the role of Ash Williams; Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) as Ruby, who now possesses the powerful Necronomicon; Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) as Pablo Simon Bolivar, Ash’s loyal sidekick dealing with the trauma he suffered in the cabin; and Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) as Kelly Maxwell, who, grief-stricken after the death of her parents, plots revenge against The Evil Dead. Lee Majors (“The Six Million Dollar Man”), Ted Raimi (“Xena: Warrior Princess,” Spider-Man), and Michelle Hurd (“Law & Order: SVU”) join the cast this year as Brock Williams, Ash’s father; Chet Kaminski, Ash’s childhood best friend; and Linda, Ash’s high school love, respectively.

Sam Raimi serves as executive producer with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, “Spartacus,” “Xena: Warrior Princess”), Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”), and Ivan Raimi (Drag Me to Hell, Spider-Man 3) along with Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”), who serves as executive producer/showrunner. Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) and Moira Grant (“Spartacus”) serve as producers.

Interview with Author and Filmmaker Kevin Strange

Many years ago I reviewed a film called Colonel Kill Motherfuckers (review) from Kevin Strange and Hack Movies. Strange and his Troma-inspired films won me over and it was a sad day when Hack Movies closed. From out of that corpse, though, Strange emerged with a new passion: writing.

Since that transition, Kevin has written 9 books and has been awarded the 2014 editor’s choice award in the Lewis and Clark college literary magazine The Peppermint Rooster Review. He has also been nominated twice for Wonderland Book Award for excellence in bizarro fiction. Having been a fan of his previous works, I reached out to Strange to see if he’d like to speak about his experiences with both mediums and what drives him as an author.

Our interview with Kevin Strange was so expansive in scope that we had to split it into two separate entities. The video below focuses on his writing and journey from struggling director to struggling writer, while this second interview is an in-depth discussion of PC culture and how it is affecting creative freedom.

    Enjoy!

We’re still a bit miffed that we have to wait until midseason for the return of “iZombie,” but this latest news ensures that the wait will be worth it…

Yet another “Veronica Mars” alum is appearing on the Rob Thomas-created show as TVLine reports that Jason Dohring is joining previous guest stars Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, Ryan Hansen, Daran Norris, and Adam Rose, all of whom also appeared in “VM,” as well as Ms. Mars herself, Kristen Bell, who made a voice cameo.

Dohring, who also recently appeared in “The Originals” and “Ringer,” will recur in Season 3 as Chase Graves, the brother-in-law of Vivian Stoll (the Fillmore Graves CEO who asked Liv, “Are you with us or against us?” at the end of Season 2) and a member of the Fillmore Graves hierarchy.  Chase will make his debut in Episode 3.08,  “Eat a Kinevel.”

New Trailer for The ReZort VOD Release in the UK/Ireland/Australia/New Zealand

Following a highly successful festival run, Content Media is releasing The ReZort on VOD in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand on October 17th. It will be available on all major digital platforms including iTunes, Amazon, Virgin, Google Play, Vimeo, Sky Store, Chill TV, Xbox, and more.

In honor of the occasion, a new trailer has shambled in!

    From the Press Release:
Jurassic World meets “The Walking Dead” in THE REZORT, releasing on all major digital platforms in the UK on Monday, 17th October 2016, courtesy of Content Media. The digital release follows the film’s world premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival in June and screenings at FrightFest in August, 2016.

Starring Dougray Scott, Jessica De Gouw, Martin McCann, Elen Rhys, Claire Goose, and Jassa Ahluwalia, THE REZORT is a horror film offering a fresh twist on the zombie genre. The film is the third feature from director Steve Barker (Outpost, Outpost: Black Sun).

THE REZORT sets its story in a world after an almost-apocalyptic zombie outbreak. Humans have won the war and are exploring how humanity can recover after such a huge percentage of the population has been wiped out. Humankind finally has the upper hand, but Melanie, who lost her entire family, is still deeply traumatized. In a bid to overcome the demons of her past, she goes on a zombie safari retreat. It is the ultimate in therapeutic revenge.

The ReZort is actually a highly controlled and monitored environment, with a maze of concealed security cameras, restraints, and barriers. The eyes and ears of trained security personnel are on the guests 24/7, ensuring a safe shooting distance between the living and the undead–that is, until the resort’s security system is hacked and a computer virus crashes it, potentially unleashing thousands of bloodthirsty zombies back into the wild.

Barker says: “When I first read the script, I was immediately struck by the unique proposition presented by the concept itself. Zombie movies are always now set in an apocalyptic world – this was something that I had not seen before.”

THE REZORT was written by Paul Gerstenberger, who says: “I was a huge fan of Michael Crichton and his tech thrillers, like Jurassic Park and Westworld, so those were some of the influences. The parallels to both films are clear, in that THE REZORT is set in a safari park on an island, where an environment is created for entertainment for visitors to interact with unnatural entities, but eventually become overrun by the inhabitants under containment.”

#NYCC16: Director Paul W.S. Anderson Talks Resident Evil: The Final Chapter; New Film a Return to Horror!

    $
    0
    0

The Resident Evil movie series has always been a sort of “hot button” topic with horror and video game fans alike. Let’s face it; there are some insanely fun moments (a man diced into tiny bits by lasers stands out in my mind) and some highly cringe-worthy moments (whenever the film turns into The Matrix… usually in the finale). Fans won’t deny their love of the original film, so a return to “The Hive” in this final chapter should have folks anticipating the premiere date in a way we haven’t seen for some time!d

Dread Central caught up with Paul W.S. Anderson at New York Comic Con to talk about monsters and the women who kill them as well as coming full circle.

The movie kicks off right where we left off in Washington, D.C., but first we get a 5-minute history lesson on the Umbrella Corporation. This is NOT a recap like we’ve seen before, catching a new audience up with previous film plots. “It’s one of the things we’ve done in this movie… we’ve explained a lot. There’s a lot that’s a mystery about the Umbrella Corporation and there’s a lot that’s a mystery about Alice’s character because in the first movie she had memory loss and we never addressed that. You never really discovered who Alice is… how she really related to the Umbrella Corporation, and in this movie, all of those questions fans might have will be answered.

I’m loving that we finally get deeper into the mythology of this series. Paul mentions that narrative-wise, the film is more sophisticated than any they’ve done before. Being the finale, there’s emotional content with Alice people might not expect from a Resident Evil film. I asked if that material is more appealing to him or would he rather just blow things up and throw monsters at his wife and franchise star, Milla Jovovich? Paul laughed and replied, “It is appealing… I find myself tearing up at the end, and that level of emotion is not something I’m supposed to display. I’m British. Stiff upper lip and all that. But this is the end of a journey, and that gets to me.” He imagines the greater depth of emotional attachment to Alice will only raise the level of horror in the film. I added that it’s always good to make your audience cry right before you cut someone’s head off.

As we began to talk about scares we favor, Paul remarked, “I made a movie called Event Horizon, and I think this is the scariest movie I’ve made since then. This is a very scary film. The first movie in the franchise, since it was in one location, it had a claustrophobic intensity to it. As the franchise has gone on, I think it’s been more associated with action. This is definitely a return to horror, but it’s not a straight horror movie. We kind of alternate horror with action so really, it’s relentless. There’s lots of intense action, intense horror and then intense action again.

I asked if they often go back to the video games for inspiration, and Paul immediately replied, “YES! There are some really horrible, abominable, terrifying creatures in this movie that come straight from the game. The Blood Sharks… the big flying creature you glimpsed at the end of the last movie. He’s in the movie quite a bit in this film. The dogs are back and better than ever. The scene with them I’m very, very proud of. We really executed the dogs in the way they should have been done. Working with dogs there’s obviously a lot of limitations and I remember in the first Resident Evil game, there was an animated sequence at the beginning where characters are being chased into the woods by these dogs. It’s really intense. I feel like we finally put that on-screen. This film has the best dog scene in the franchise!

So we’ve got a new level of intensity, deeper emotional content and an attempt to raise the bar on the franchise’s horrors. “The film is very gritty and very real which I think makes it more immersive. The last film was intentionally very stylized with a science fiction look and there was a lot of slow motion. This movie is a complete reaction to that. It’s primarily shot on location… very few sets. It’s all that gritty, dirty, intense realism. There’s no slow motion in it, just… hell for leather gritty realism.

Being the last film in the series, Paul mentions this is a more personal film for him, tying up what he started 15 years ago. “It’s actually using a lot of ideas I had back then. The idea that The Hive is a malevolent force in itself. They were trapped in an environment that wanted to kill them. That kind of came from classic haunted house movies like The Shining and The Haunting. There were ideas that I had that we just couldn’t execute. We didn’t have the budget or the technology wasn’t there yet, so we get to go back to The Hive; and some of those ideas I had, I finally get to put on-screen and it was amazing. Some of the things you’ll see in the new trailer, like this huge turbine… it’s really, really terrifying. It’s a return to an environment where nothing is safe. This is definitely a darker film. You have these real landscapes and then the last half of the film we go to The Hive so we get very focused… very claustrophobic… tight… very intense.

We asked about the level of gore we can expect, again thinking heavily on the slice and dice moment where the S.T.A.R.S. soldier becomes the stuff of Slapchop dreams. Paul emphatically replies, “It gets pretty nasty. It’s the first time since Event Horizon where I’ve seen people turn away from the screen… like that moment when a thing happen and you’re just like (makes a guttural sound) … like you just can’t bear to watch! … It happens a lot in this film.

There was absolutely a drive to top the scares of the first film we all love. Paul acknowledges the raw power of the first film, saying the other movies do have their place, but if every film after the first were shot in one location with the same elements, they probably wouldn’t have gone on for 6 movies, but it was exciting to go back and re-address those elements with a 2016 sensibility.

I asked if they had gotten to all the monsters on their checklist over the course of the series. Paul’s eyes light up at the thought of all those creatures and replied, “I always wanted to do the flying creature, but it was a struggle to figure out how Milla would fight a flying creature but we finally figured it out. So I’m very excited about that. In the later games, the dogs were always my favorite and we’ve done them the best we ever have, but then there’s the Blood Shark with all these overlapping teeth. He’s very ugly. He’s kind of like a land shark. You know how people are terrified of sharks because of that mouth? Well… he’s got that, and then feet so he can run around. A shark with legs with all the flesh flayed off it! It’s really horrible and disgusting.” You’ll never think of the “Saturday Night Live” skit the same way again.

#NYCC16: Director Anna Foerster Talks Underworld: Blood Wars

The Underworld series has been roaring along for many years now, constantly adding to its own mythology, backward and forward in time. Director Anna Foerster comes to the series as a first time feature director with an inherent respect for that rich history, stating that she is always mindful of those elements that keep fans coming back. “You take that mythology and you build on it” which includes further exploring the hierarchy of the vampires and the militaristic way in which they deliver and carry out marching orders… the pack nature of Lycans even when they are in a fully human form with that beast lurking near the surface… perhaps even sub-sets of vampires and Lycans where we see different forms and powers.

The film takes place an indeterminate number of years after the last film. The number of years is left murky as “vampires don’t experience time the way we do, so it is not important to them.” When you have forever ahead of you, the lifetime of a human must seem like a passing storm… or rather an odd holiday marked on the calendar as an afterthought. The crux of the film deals with Selene having lost everything, at a point in her life where she almost has a death wish. She’s lost her coven, her lover, her daughter, and she realizes her blood (literally) could cause more bloodshed than any catalyst that has come before. Can she prevent this? Can she rediscover something to fight for? A parallel story forms around David (Theo James) who is a reluctant hero type. He must accept who he is and find his place in the vampire world. The two character’s paths cross as they both struggle for a deeper meaning in their lives.

I asked Anna what she might want to add or enhance in the series with her turn in the director’s chain, having taken in all the previous films. She remarked “I wanted to explore the different facets of Selene. She’s this incredible, bad ass woman, but she IS a woman and has vulnerabilities. I wanted to explore those vulnerabilities without losing sight of the bad ass female action hero.

On the topic of monsters, I asked what Anna might prefer in realizing the film’s creatures on-screen; practical effects… digital… puppetry? Anna mentioned her background as visual effects director of photography with her first film in the states being Independence Day. “I love the idea of doing as much as possible, practical… in camera… in a way that actors can interact with it, but then you come to the point where you ask how much is actually possible working like this. Time and money become a concern. But we really did use practical as much as we could. Every time there is a direct interaction… a foreground Lycan, practical is definitely used. In this movie we probably have the highest Lycan count ever, so there comes a point where it is completely CG. There are HORDES of Lycans!

I asked how far the technology has come in creating hordes of creatures, since we’ve seen CG armies marching into battle that range from amazing to Gumby. Anna mentions she believes the effects look “really quite good” at the moment, with work still being completed at this moment. That’s not just someone who works on the movie giving a biased opinion (though you may think what you will of the statement), but having seen the previous films and comparing, she said the new movie’s werewolves absolutely hold up, mentioning that with every new film using CG effects, film fans expect more and everyone on this production is taking great pride in creating the best monsters they can.

The look of the Lycans will be familiar (in keeping with past films in the Underworld series) with slight changes, particularly in how they run, noting the proportions when they are standing or crouched on all fours is an “interesting thing” to observe. One Lycan will stand out from the rest with a new look and abilities. There aren’t new creatures on the film beyond those vampires and werewolves, but in exploring the mythology, we see different classes among those two creature types and this new Lycan is one of them.

Underworld: Blood Wars is “definitely gory, the battles are big”, but at the core, we see Selene come full circle as a vampire. “You’ll feel like you’ve seen this complete arch in her evolution.” Sounds like something that will make die-hard fans start lining up for opening day!

You’ll find Underworld: Blood Wars in theaters beginning January 6, 2017, from Sony Pictures Entertainment. Stay tuned for lots more between now and then!

Alongside series star Kate Beckinsale, Theo James (the Divergent series) returns as Selene’s ally David, reprising the role he played in Underworld: Awakening. British actors Tobias Menzies (“Outlander,” “Rome”) and Lara Pulver (“Sherlock”) take on the respective roles of a formidable new Lycan leader and a fiercely ambitious Vampire, and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) again plays Vampire elder Thomas.

Rounding out the film’s stellar international cast are James Faulkner (“Game of Thrones”), Peter Andersson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), newcomer Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James (A&E’s “Damien”), and Daisy Head (Fallen).

Anna Foerster directs. Foerster, who previously directed episodes of the television series “Criminal Minds” and “Outlander,” is widely known for her work as cinematographer on epic blockbusters such as Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and White House Down.

The screenplay for Underworld: Blood Wars was penned by Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter, Priest) and based on characters originally created by Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman, and Danny McBride. Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg (The Lincoln Lawyer, Million Dollar Baby), Gary Lucchesi (Million Dollar Baby, Underworld), and Richard S. Wright (The Lincoln Lawyer, Underworld) are producing, as is David Kern (Underworld: Awakening) along with Len Wiseman (Underworld, Total Recall).

For more info visit the official Underworld Facebook page.

    Synopsis:
Vampire death dealer Selene (Beckinsale) fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (James) and his father, Thomas (Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

#NYCC16: Ominous Sneak Peek of The Walking Dead Season 7 Premiere

During this weekend’s “The Walking Dead” panel at New York Comic Con, a clip from the Season 7 premiere was shown that seems to reference an iconic event from the comics that happened to one Sheriff Rick Grimes…

We’re not sure if Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is indeed going to cut off Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) hand, much like the Governor did on the page, but it sure seems like it!  You be the judge; we have the sneak peek right here.

“The Walking Dead” returns in just TWO MORE WEEKS!  But first, be sure to tune in to next week’s two-hour retrospective “The Walking Dead: Journey So Far” at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT (more details here).

The first half of Season 7 sees the group fractured, broken, bereaved, and picking up the pieces while living under the thumb of oppression. Negan will have successfully brought the survivors under his will, brutally convincing them to live under his rules with a deadly and horrific example of what happens if they don’t.

“The Walking Dead” returns Sunday, October 23, with Episode 7.01, written by showrunner/exec producer Scott Gimple and directed by exec producer Greg Nicotero. After a mid-season break, the show will be back in February 2017.

“Teen Wolf” held its final New York Comic panel this weekend and showed off the entire first act of the Season 6 premiere episode.  Of course you can watch it right here! But first… we have a few tidbits from the panel courtesy of Deadline:

The finale of the split arc 20-episode final season will be the show’s 100th episode, airing in 2017; and “certain characters may find their end,” exec producer Jeff Davis told the crowd. He also confirmed that Ian Bohen will be back as Peter Hale and teased that another Hale, Derek, portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin (who is now playing Superman on The CW’s “Supergirl”) could return as well.

You wouldn’t believe the number of crazy ideas we’ve talked about in the writers’ room,” Davis enthused when taking about bringing more past characters and actors back. “It’s really hard to do a series finale,” he said, wondering aloud if it was a good idea to fill it with cameos. “We [still] have several unwritten episodes so we’ll see.

At one time an Eichen House spinoff was being considered, “with Doctor Deaton (Seth Gilliam) as the head of the facility, gathering a supernatural team,” according to Davis.  Now that’s an idea we’d support… MTV, are you listening?

The final season of “Teen Wolf” premieres Tuesday, November 15th, at 9/8c.
