Theyre WatchingStarring Mia Faith, Kris Lemche, David Alpay, Carrie Genzel, Brigid Brannagh, Dimitri Diatchenko

Directed by Jay Lender and Micah Wright

Distributed by Amplify

I’m generally reluctant to go against another Dread Central critic’s review. It’s not that I don’t frequently disagree with the staff or fear some kind of retribution from the Grand Tzar Uncle Creepy. It comes more from a combination of realism and the ability to chill the fuck out. This is not my site, nor should it be, and as a result there are a myriad of conflicting opinions that all bring about a higher level of discussion and better community than a singular voice. At the same time, I’m no longer 14 and don’t fly into the 3rd stage of Super Saiyan rage when someone doesn’t share my particular tastes.

So it takes a lot to get me to muster up the fucks to write a contradicting review. My general metric is that it at least has to be a two-star out of five difference in opinion. Even then, I don’t run to the keyboard every time my favorite franchise has been misrepresented. I only spring into action when I hear the same common criticism over and over that I feel misses the point of what makes the film enjoyable. For They’re Watching, that criticism is that the film feels inconsistent.

I’m not going to spend a terrible amount of time addressing the criticisms of my contemporaries. People feel that the movie is inconsistent, but the oscillation between the comedy and horror is what makes They’re Watching better than the sum of its parts. It’s the makeup of a great horror fan favorite or cult classic. There were moments where I was confused as to whether I should be laughing or gripping my blanket, but that’s the whole point. It’s genuinely funny, but it’s also mysterious and strange. If you feel like you can’t predict where it’s going or what it’s going for, then congratulations, and welcome to They’re Watching! If that bothers you, then you aren’t getting what makes this film fun.

Mr. Gorman’s review went over the basics of the plot, so I’ll only briefly recap them. “Home Hunters International” is a TV show that puts people in homes, internationally. Becky and Goran buy a shithole in the middle of Moldova that for some reason Becky loves. Fast forward to six months later, and the crew is back to film the follow-up. Sarah (Mia Faith) is the focal point, but it would be hard to pick a protagonist out of the minimal cast. Everyone is given a good amount of time, and we learn about the quirks and issues involved in shooting the show.

However, things are not all as they seem in this quiet little Moldoven town. Between ominous funerals and mysterious burnt stakes in the middle of the woods, it’s pretty clear shit is going to hit the fan at some point. And oh, how it does hit the fan. It hits the fan so gloriously that I could feel it shred and shotgun spew on my face. It culminates in such a glorious cavalcade of schlock that I genuinely hurt myself laughing so hard.

Aside from the best ending outside of The Collector’s alternate special feature, the connective bits give They’re Watching life apart from its scares. This is a film with maybe two shocking scenes, so what really holds it together is the world-building. They couldn’t have picked a better setting, as the real Pavlovka is barely even on the maps. The weird superstitions and customs aren’t just talked about, but literally etched into the walls and fabrics of the town. Even their local chocolate of choice, Doina, is impossible to find outside of Google searches for this movie. The barrier between fantasy and reality is razor-thin, grounded enough to feel real while still remaining bizarre and mystical.

It’s kept alive further by great performances all around, with Dimitri Diatchenko (Vladimir), Brigid Brannagh (Becky), and Carrie Genzel (Kate) standing out. Strangely enough for a found footage movie, I never felt like anyone was dragging the production down. There were times I thought the character of Sarah was acting like an irrational amateur, but it fit her character. There are only two criticisms I have for the characters. First, Greg’s (David Alpay) troubles with what he saw in Afghanistan felt trite. I get that it fit into the larger narrative, but it was paid off at a time that drew focus from the main conflict. The acting was a bit stiff for it too, but not to the point where I cringed. Second, Mia Faith is distractingly pretty. I’m serious. I’m not about to discredit her acting abilities for it, but I found my focus chronically pulled. It makes sense since all the other characters seem to realize her attractiveness level as well, so don’t take it as a heavy criticism. Still, I had to mention it, just in case she was reading and jonesing for some fat weird nerd.

Not everyone is going to like this film. The divide between critics that love and hate this film isn’t just academic, but boils down to fundamental taste. Plenty of people that I know and respect have wildly different opinions on this film, with even the inhabitants of my own movie-watching couch being pretty evenly split. Many feel like the over-the-top ending, complete with people exploding into frogs and faces melted off by tentacle lasers, is too jarring and doesn’t make sense in the world. If that is your opinion, I ask, “What would you prefer?” Another shaky-cam chase through the woods with frequent inexplicable visual “glitches?” Maybe a close-up of the crying protagonist as they hide in a corner, followed by a quick glimpse of the screaming ghost’s face as it pops into frame and the camera stops? That’s the kind of cliché shit that made us tired of found footage in the first place.

They’re Watching isn’t revolutionary, but it is very different. It gives you a reason to like found footage again. It’s more fun than scary by a mile, and plenty won’t like it. But if you’re like me and this is your cup of tea, you’ll love it.

Horror History: Nicholas Burman-Vince The Chatterer Cenobite Shares Early Hellraiser Test Makeup

The world wide web can be a wondrous thing. Especially when little nuggets of horror history are officially exhumed. Case in point: Nicholas Burman-Vince who played The Chatterer Cenobite in the original Hellraiser.

Burman-Vince took to his Facebook page to share the following:

Here’s a piece of history. Call sheet and photo of the makeup test for the Cenobites, 30 years ago today,” writers Burman-Vince. “You’ll see I was referred to as Poor Bastard on the call sheet – a term coined by Bob Keen, due to not being able to see, hear or speak in makeup. (I probably thought I was looking in the same direction as the others.)

“Notable changes to the make ups were: Doug’s pins were literally pins, but didn’t ‘read’ on camera; so were replaced by ‘nails’ and he gained black contact lenses to cover his blue eyes. Chatterer’s teeth are pointed here, but Clive thought I didn’t look human, so the teeth you see in the film are replicas of mine taken from the molds for the dentures I wore.”

“Huge kudos to the makeup artists behind these wonderful images. Thanks to Stuart Conran for the call sheet and PhilandSarah Stokes Clive’s official archivists for the photo.”

New Video and Poster Are Hostage to the Devil

The work of Father Malachi Martin was enough to send most people screaming for the hills… and rightly so. The new film Hostage to the Devil illustrates the life and times of one of the world’s most notorious exorcists. Check out a new trailer and poster!

Hostage to the Devil UK/Ireland Release Details:
Following its world premiere at FrightFest this summer, original documentary HOSTAGE TO THE DEVIL will release on VOD platforms in the UK and Ireland on Monday, 17th October 2016, courtesy of Content Media.

Over five years in production, director Martin Stalker has made a film which examines age-old questions about the existence of the Devil and the debate over good versus evil, all through the life of a controversial Irish-born Jesuit priest, Fr Malachi Martin.

Using first person-interviews with paranormal royalty such as Lorraine Warren, Ralph Sarchie, and John Zaffis, along with dramatic reconstructions, archival evidence, and words straight from Martin, this spine-chilling documentary takes the audience on a journey through an extraordinary life marked by battles against the Vatican, scandal, contention, and most of all, a deep and all-encompassing belief in the theory and practice of exorcism.

The film explains in graphic detail the process and outcomes of such an ordeal, including the horrifying case study of a four-year-old girl whom Fr Martin assessed as requiring an exorcism. Thus was to be the last case he was involved in before he died under mysterious circumstances.

A child possessed. An exorcist locked in combat with an ancient evil. Using first- hand interviews, dramatic reconstruction, archival evidence, and a dead man’s words, this documentary film tells the true story of Father Malachi Martin and asks, “In the battle for saving a soul, who really is ‘Hostage to the Devil’?”

Director Stalker says: “I initially had feelings of disbelief that nothing had been made about this incredible and mysterious man (Malachi Martin) before. This was what influenced my decision to get involved and to tell his story. I feel the film industry has been saturated with misconceptions on exorcism and diabolical possession. So it was important that this documentary addressed the realism of this subject matter through the knowledge of one man, through the personal experiences of others, and through using science and the Catholic Church as critical and theological anchors in the film.”

Hostage to the Devil is a CAUSEWAY PICTURES film in association with UNDERGROUND FILMS, BORD SCANNÁN NA HÉIREANN / THE IRISH FILM BOARD, and NORTHERN IRELAND SCREEN.

No, we’re not talking about We Are Still Here director Ted Geoghegan’s haircut, even though he is quite dapper. What we’re talking about here is his new movie, Mohawk, from which we have the first official still. Dig it!

Jack Frost Nipping at Your Blu-Ray Players this Holiday Season

What a weird world we live in where the low budget direct-to-video 1997 serial killer snowman flick Jack Frost gets a special edition Blu-ray release before the big budget theatrically-released 1998 Jack Frost snowman family flick. Perhaps if the Michael Keaton-possessed snowman had raped Shannon Elizabeth to death with a carrot it would already have a fully loaded Blu-ray on store shelves.

As the Blu-ray market becomes increasingly niche, I take it as a good sign that more and more DTV genre flicks from the VHS heyday of the Nineties are getting remastered for the 21 century digital consumer.

Vinegar Syndrome has announced plans to thaw out Michael Cooney’s 1997 horror comedy Jack Frost about a serial killer on his way to execution who gets transformed in a chemical truck crash into a murderous morphing snowman that terrorizes a town during the Christmas season via a variety of winterized ways. Christopher Allport (To Live and Die in L.A.) plays the Sheriff of the town of Snomonton (“The Snowman Capitol of the Midwest”) who must contend with this frozen fiend. Pre-American Pie Shannon Elizabeth portrays one of Jack Frost’s victims in the film’s most notorious scene. I’ve been told in the past she prefers not to talk about this film; perhaps explaining why she isn’t amongst the myriad of disc extras.

• All extras on both disc formats
• Region free Blu-ray and DVD combo pack
• Scanned and restored in 2k from 35mm vault elements
• Commentary track with Director Michael Cooney
• Video introduction from Director Michael Cooney
• Video interview with Lead Actor Scott MacDonald
• Video interview with Director of Photography Dean Lent
• Limited edition lenticular artwork by Chris Garofalo
• English SDH Subtitles

Vinegar Syndrome isn’t done pulling out all the stops for this one. When Jack Frost was originally released on VHS many of the covers included a lenticular hologram that morphed the titular terror from an ordinary snowman to its more monstrously toothy movie version. Vinegar Syndrome will be releasing a limited edition Blu-ray/DVD combo with a variation of that lenticular hologram cover only available on their website during their annual Black Friday sale.

Here’s the details:
Only available here on our website and a few other select retail partners, the Limited Edition Lenticular Cover Blu-ray/DVD release of JACK FROST! This lenticular edition is limited to 3,000 units and will be available during our Black Friday Weekend Sale (11/25 – 11/28). A standard ‘non-lenticular’ version will be available through all the usual outlets (Amazon, Deep Discount, etc…) on December 13th.

There you have it. Jack Frost on Blu-ray December 13th; special edition hologram cover available for only a weekend during Vinegar Syndrome’s Black Friday sale.

Makes you wonder what lesser known DTV horror flick from the 1990s will be the next to get dug out of mothballs.
Coincidentally, I think mothballs were one of the main ingredients used in bringing the Jack Frost special effects to life.

Night of the Living Dead Gets a 4K Restoration! Premiering at the MoMA in NYC

There’s no doubt about it… George A. Romero’s 1968 masterpiece Night of the Living Dead is one of the single greatest motion pictures of our time. It’s finally getting its due, too, as the seminal film has been digitally restored by New York’s Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation.

The 4K restoration will receive its world premiere at MoMA as part of this year’s To Save and Project festival, which is dedicated to celebrating newly preserved and restored films. Romero himself will introduce the film at the premiere.

From the Press Release:
The Museum of Modern Art announces the addition of George A. Romero’s horror classic Night of the Living Dead to the upcoming To Save and Project festival in November. The iconic horror film, widely diminished by duplication due to infamous copyright issues, will have its world premiere in its originally intended quality, thanks to a painstaking 4K digital restoration by MoMA and The Film Foundation. Director George A. Romero will attend the world premiere on November 5 at 8:00 p.m. at The Museum of Modern Art to introduce the screening. Tickets for that program go on sale October 22. An additional screening will take place at the Museum at 7:00 p.m. on November 12.

Perhaps the most influential horror film of the last 50 years, Romero’s classic is also one of the most abused—subjected, because of its public-domain status, to well over 100 home video releases of deteriorated quality. The film has now been restored to its full, original glory by The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation, working from the original camera negative, which was carefully guarded over the years by the members of Image Ten, the Pittsburgh partnership that originally produced it.

Night of the Living Dead has long been the subject of restoration discussions after a missing copyright notice upon its original 1968 print left it open to duplication and public re-release. Recognizing its cinematic impact immediately, MoMA first acquired an original print in 1970 for its collection. Now, decades later, the Museum presents this important motion picture in its best possible state after a painstaking audio and image restoration.

“It’s an honor and a thrill to have MoMA restore and present a horror movie that I and a group of Pittsburgh friends created nearly 50 years ago,” said Romero. “After working closely with MoMA and The Film Foundation on this restoration, I know the meticulous work that has gone into creating this new restoration; and I am excited to terrify new audiences and devoted fans with a version that returns our film to the quality we originally intended.”

“Our annual To Save and Project festival showcases the best new restorations of masterworks and rediscoveries of world cinema. George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead set the standard for horror and the figure of the zombie in its myriad incarnations on screens large and small. Until now, however, it has been impossible to truly appreciate the film’s formal beauty and visceral power,” said MoMA film curator and festival co-organizer Joshua Siegel. “Our state-of-the-art restoration draws upon the best original visual and audio elements previously thought to have been lost, ensuring that audiences will be able to enjoy Night of the Living Dead as originally intended by its creators for generations to come.”

“The Film Foundation is thrilled that George Romero’s groundbreaking film is being restored from the original camera negative and track. We hope this will allow a new generation to experience the film and appreciate the elements that made it so innovative at the time and give it continued power and relevance today. George Romero’s involvement in the restoration means that this version will be definitive and the only one that truly reflects his vision,” said Margaret Bodde, executive director of The Film Foundation.

The film was restored by The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation. The restoration was overseen by George A. Romero and Image Ten—most especially, Gary Streiner, Russ Streiner, and John Russo—with restoration work done by Cineric Inc, NYC, and Audio Mechanics, Burbank, CA.

Among its many influences, Romero’s film is credited with creating the zombie as we know it today: the reanimated corpse with a taste for the living, seen in everything from “The Walking Dead” to Shaun of the Dead. Despite its humble Pittsburgh working-class origins, exploitation genre ties, and inadequate handling by the original distributor, Night of the Living Dead has set numerous precedents for motion pictures throughout the world. It was the first film of its kind to cast an African-American actor as the lead character based solely on the strength of his performance and tramples widely held taboos of the time—from respect for the dead and authority figures to traditional family relationships and the narrative tradition of heroes surviving to the film’s conclusion.

Night of the Living Dead premieres as part of The Museum of Modern Art’s 14th annual edition of To Save and Project, an international festival dedicated to celebrating newly preserved and restored films from archives, studios, distributors, foundations, and independent filmmakers. Running from November 2 through 23, 2016, To Save and Project is organized by Joshua Siegel, Curator, and Dave Kehr, Adjunct Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art.

Tickets for all screenings are available two weeks prior to their screening date, beginning October 19. Tickets for the first screening of Night of the Living Dead will go on sale October 22.

Please come to Blu-ray. We beg you.

Doctor Strange is nearly upon us, but just before it arrives, a short penned by one of its writers, C. Robert Cargill, has just been released to the world. As They Continue to Fall was directed by Nikhil Bhagat and can be viewed below.

From the Press Release:
Director Nikhil Bhagat has debuted his impressive short film “As They Continue to Fall”, a dark dystopian fantasy written by “Dr. Strange” screenwriter C. Robert Cargill.

“As They Continue to Fall” tells the story of a homeless man who hunts fallen angels in a dystopian society filled with crime and corruption. Haunted by a dark past, yet hopeful for the future, he continues to hunt as they continue to fall.

“I am extremely lucky and grateful that C. Robert Cargill took the time to write a script for me to direct,” said director Nikhil Bhagat. “My goal for this short was to honor his script by making it feel as grounded and realistic as possible. I wanted to create a cinematic and mainstream film that the audiences hopefully enjoy”

In addition to C. Robert Cargill, “As They Continue to Fall” came to life with the help of many talented industry professionals including cinematographer Noah Rosenthal (“Fat Kid Rules the World”), editor Tommy Aagaard (“The Nice Guys”, “Avengers”), sound designer Mike Miller and visual effects artists Andy Wong and Ben Hall.

Real Account – Vols. 3-4 (Manga Series)

Written by OkushouReal Account

Illustrated by Shizumu Watanabe

Published by Kodansha Comics

Suitable for ages 16+

Coming straight from reading Magical Girl Apocalypse, we can’t help but have a feeling of intense déjà vu. Real Account Volumes One and Two focused on the story of Ataru Kashiwagi as he struggled to come to terms with his current predicament. From the very beginning of Volumes Three and Four, we are plopped into a new storyline with a brand new character, Yuma Mukai. Much like Magical Girl Apocalypse, this is a new timeline where the previous hasn’t happened yet. We’re beginning again anew with an all new cast of characters. Thankfully, the writer and illustrator assure us that we haven’t seen the last of Ataru and the companions from his storyline.

Within this paragraph we’re going to spoil the biggest reveal in Real Account Volumes One and Two, so this is your paragraph specific SPOILER ALERT. Skip down below if you haven’t read the first two volumes yet. In Volume Two of Real Account we discover that Ataru had a twin brother at one point in his life. Ataru’s brother was always the popular one, and everyone liked him more. When an unfortunate accident killed the real Ataru, the “Ataru” we know took his identity. His name is actually Yuma. At the very end of Volume Two of Real Account, we discover that the real Ataru is still alive, and similarly sucked into the RA games. He’s ranked highly in the RA winner’s circle, and that’s how “Ataru” discovers him. Therefore, in Volumes Three and Four, “Yuma” is actually Ataru who is somehow still alive. It’s incredibly confusing when read in a summary, but within the series itself it’s thankfully easy to follow.

To those reading this who still haven’t read Volumes One and Two of Real Account, do yourself a favor and go read them right now. Technically you don’t have to read them to understand Volumes Three and Four, but it’s worth it. With such an intense beginning two volumes, you have to wonder if Real Account can keep up to its balls to the wall pacing. The stakes are just as high in these two volumes, but at this point we the audience have gotten used to everything. We know the players will be competing in games. We know that a lot of people are going to die. We know that there are some players who will do literally anything to survive. All of these are true here as well, but we’re already a little desensitized to it. That still doesn’t mean it’s not interesting.

This storyline occurs parallel to Volumes One and Two of Real Account, but doesn’t parrot it in the details. Sure, everyone’s still sucked into cyberspace, Marble still steals their bodies, they still die if they have zero followers and their followers die with them. However, the characters, situations, games, and strategies are all new. For instance, Yuma technically loses all of his followers when he plays the first game in RA. Everyone in the real world unfollows him including his own girlfriend. But moments before she does unfollow him, he makes a deal with another girl in the RA cyberspace. She too was going to lose all of her followers because her older brother waited until the last minute to unfollow her. So unlike Ataru in the first two volumes, who has always had his sister following him, Yuma has to use his brain to save his life from the very beginning. The irony is painful if you put the two stories together. “Yuma” who was once the apple of everyone’s eye (including his sister), ends up with no one wanting to save him right from the get-go. He has to rely even more on his smarts than Ataru. That’s definitely saying something since Ataru comes up with incredible strategies to win in Volumes One and Two.

Needless to say, Volumes Three and Four of Real Account are very different from the former two, while still connecting. There are subtle moments that compare between the two, and these are bound to continue in future volumes. Especially since the author and illustrator promise to blend the two timelines together down the road. The most obvious example of course is when Yuma is declared a top player in the RA rankings. This is the moment that Ataru discovers his twin is still alive. So while it doesn’t mean much in this timeline, we know the significance of it in the other. A much subtler example would be when a character from Volumes One and Two is mentioned within Yuma’s tweetts to his friends. The tweetts are only shown to illustrate in the moment how important Yuma’s online friends are to him. Reading the content doesn’t forward the current plot at all. Fact of the matter being, pay attention to all the little details in these two volumes and you’ll be rewarded with easter eggs.

Brutality is still prime and center in these volumes of Real Account. Players will do anything to survive. One game in particular utilizes live streaming. Those involved in the game separate into pairs and are all given a private room with a couch, television monitor, and webcam. They are allowed to do anything they want, but have to reach a certain number of viewers within a time limit. Yuma looks at the other streams to see what is getting the most views. The channels that do the best in this game involve either sex or violence. One really popular stream is run by an emerging character named Mizuki Kurashina. It’s clear that he’s a psychopath very quickly. In his stream he tortures his teammate for the entire time limit without killing him. He brings him to the very edge of death for views. At one point Yuma recognizes him by name as someone to watch out for, “This guy’s seriously bad news.”

It’s obvious that Real Account is a social commentary on the prolific use of social media, and the world’s addiction to technology. However, that’s not unusual in popular culture spaces. It’s been done before and will be done again. What makes Real Account unique, and successful, is how savage it is. Players do normally unspeakable things to save themselves, or to purposely kill others. It’s a Battle Royale style fight for survival in the Real Account games, and frankly we can’t get enough of it.

Real Account has gotten a ton of things right so far. It’s illustrated some of the darkest recesses of humanity when personal safety is at stake. It’s shown us some of the most brutal things humans can do to each other when pressed. It’s made us think twice about who we follow online. No matter how you feel about the comments it’s making about modern society, Real Account delivers dread on many levels. Sure, we’re a little desensitized already from the first two volumes. But honestly, that’s the only negative we can come up with thus far for Real Account. We’re only four volumes in, and it’s already shaping up to be one of our favorite manga series of the year.

New Infographic Explores What Horror Icons Do During Their Time Off

Oh, the banality of evil! That’s exactly what’s in store for you horror fiends in need of a chuckle as our friends over at Halloween Costumes have delved into the more ordinary side of being a horror icon.

Evil is the ideal, but life is long and doesn’t always go as planned. It comes with inherent banality, the boredom that fills those long hours in between the next devious plot, slashing, or scare. We’ve all been stuck at the grocery store after working a ten-hour night shift and had to wait in line behind the coupon lady as she meticulously counts each penny. We’ve all had to go to our nephew’s birthday party and make small talk when just hours before we took out an entire spaceship full of soldiers with nothing but our face-hugging hatchlings and a little mouth acid.

Horror stars are relatable because, in the end, they’re just like us. They have to deal with life as it is, not as it often should be. The classic films capture the terrifying glory of their careers, but what happens when the killing is done and horror stars have to fill their time with the usual fare? This is the rarely seen banal side of evil…

Synopsis:
What if there was a company you could call that, for a premium, will bring your fears to life? You don’t have to leave your house, your office, or your vacation; the scares are customized to your tastes and arrive at your doorstep when you least expect it. But like texting an ex at 2am, what sounds like a great idea at the time can end up getting you killed.

When horror movie enthusiast Joe Foster (Neff) and his girlfriend, Lindsey Gains (Stasey), are handed a business card for such a company, Joe’s curiosity gets the best of him. As the Fear, Inc. experience seemingly begins, scares start popping up right out of Joe’s favorite horror movies, quickly turning him into a kid in a candy store. If the kid was a self-righteous thirty-year-old and the candy store was the prop room from SAW.

After a friend explains the company’s dangerous reputation, his roller coaster of a journey goes from lighthearted fun to uncomfortably realistic as things take a major turn for the worse. Joe’s sense of reality spirals out of control as he’s forced to take responsibility for his actions, no matter the cost.
