We’ve been singing the praises of director Dave Parker for years now, and some news has come that has us absolutely delighted! His latest foray into fear, It Watches, arrives on Digital next month and then on DVD early next year.

From the Press Release:
Director Dave Parker’s “unpredictable terror tale” It Watches premieres on Digital this December from Uncork’d Entertainment.

Ivan Djurovic (Zoombies), Rick Irwin (30 Minutes or Less), Sanny van Heteren (Hellraiser: Revelations), and James Duval (Donnie Darko) star in a film that will “keep you guessing the entire time” and “delights in delivering the shivers.”

Andre, recovering from a recent accident, agrees to help his friend Robert by taking over a housesitting job at a creepy home nestled in the hills above Los Angeles. As night comes, the house reveals its insidious nature as Andre begins hearing ominous sounds and experiencing strange occurrences throughout the house that lead him to believe he is not alone and that someone, or something, is in the house with him.

From the director of The Hills Run Red and Tales of Halloween, It Watches arrives on Digital December 6th and on DVD February 21, 2017.

Preacher, Season One (Blu-ray / DVD)

0

PreacherStarring Dominic Cooper, Tom Brooke, W. Brown, Ian Colletti, Jackie Earle Haley

Directed by Various

Distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s iconic graphic novel Preacher had many false starts along the way to a live action version. Over the years filmmakers like Sam Mendes, Rachel Talalay and Kevin Smith tried to make it a movie, but the epic narrative meant that was no easy task. Mark Steven Johnson planned an HBO series at one stage, which fell apart because the network was worried about the religious aspects. That, and maybe they figured the director of Ghost Rider and Daredevil wasn’t the best man for the job.

The series eventually landed at AMC, with adaptation duties falling to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who aren’t really the obvious choices. It turns out they’re better equipped than most of the previous candidates, since they’re able to combine absurdist humour and graphic violence with a fair amount of heart.

The premise of the show has Jesse Custer, an ex-con turned preacher of a small Texas town, become possessed by a powerful spirit, which grants him the power to control people with his voice. While coming to terms with this ability, he has to deal with his vengeance-seeking ex Tulip (Ruth Negga), a trouble-bound Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and a town of misfits, freaks and villains. Oh, and some angels want to cut the spirit out of him with a chainsaw.

Fans of the comic will be in for a surprise with “Preacher” since instead of diving into the central chase – which I won’t spoil for the uninitiated, it focuses on Jesse’s attempt to save his hometown. It takes time to develop the residents of Annville and lets Jesse do some actual preaching, which he didn’t much of in the comic. The show also remixes the source material, meaning events play out in unexpected ways.

Adapting the graphic novel was always going to be tricky, since it shifts gears from funny to emotional to horrific with ease. Ennis had a firm grasp on that shifting tone, but the show stumbles with it occasionally. The humour can be great when it lands, and awkward when it doesn’t. The comical British angels, for instance, aren’t the laugh riot the show thinks they are. Likewise, the shift between heavy dramatic scenes with tongue-in-cheek ones can feel jarring.

On the flipside, “Preacher” has acquired a great cast. Dominic Cooper exudes easy-going charm as Jesse, but he’s able to dig into the darker side, like the God complex the preacher develop thanks to his newfound powers. Ruth Negga is the perfect Tulip and pretty much steals the show with a mix of steeliness and vulnerability, even though the story often leaves her sidelined. Gilgun is a treat as Cassidy, tapping into his fun-loving persona, while also teasing his uglier side.

Even the supporting characters are developed in intriguing ways. Sheriff Root has more going on than being the mean-spirited arsehole he was in the comic, and his son – the aptly named Arseface – goes beyond being a gross-out gag. Graham McTavish cuts an imposing figure as The Saint of Killers, though he’s not given much to do in season one. The series also lacks a dynamic threat, with Jesse’s conflict with meat baron Quincannon failing to inspire much conflict. Jackie Earle Haley is a fine actor, but Quincannon is too much of a goofy stereotype to be taken seriously and is little more than a device to drive the events of the finale.

“Preacher” isn’t afraid to spill some blood either, with Cassidy’s intro and a showdown with an unkillable enemy being delightful. The religious aspects lack the bite they had twenty years ago, but it strikes a good balance between faith and philosophy, so believers and atheists alike should be able to get along with the show.

The season one DVD comes with deleted and extended scenes and a couple of featurettes. Some of the deleted scenes are interesting – like Elizabeth Perkins playing a gender-flipped version of Quincannon – but there’s nothing here the show misses. Likewise, the featurettes – “The Unfilmable Pilot” and “The Stunts of Preacher” – are mainly fluffy EPK pieces, though the occasional nugget of information comes out of them.

The first season of “Preacher” is messy and uneven, but it’s also fresh, funny television with a terrific cast. It was something of a slow burn, but the payoff is worth it, and since there’s so much juicy material from the comic yet to be mined, the future of the series is looking bright indeed.

Special Features:

  • Deleted & Extended Scenes
  • “The Unfilmable Pilot”
  • “The Stunts of Preacher”

AFM 2016: Shannen Doherty and Tom Green Find Distro with Bethany

More horrors are on their way as THR is reporting that Tom Green is going to be delivering scares instead of laughs in his first horror project Bethany, which has been picked up for distribution by Uncork’d Entertainment.

The film from director James Cullen Bressack centers on a young woman named Claire (Stefanie Estes) who moves back to her childhood home only to be haunted by her imaginary friend from when she was a child. The pic also stars Zack Ward as Claire’s husband, and Shannen Doherty as Claire’s late mother. Green is playing the young woman’s psychiatrist.

I strongly feel this is my best film as a filmmaker,” Bressack said Monday in a statement. “It’s a much more mature and personal piece for me, and I cannot wait for people to see this one.

The director wrote the film with Ward. Kenneth Gust, Ace Underhill, Doherty, Shant Jordan and Shahen Jordan produced alongside Bressack and Ward.

Uncork’d has picked up worldwide distribution rights for Bethany, and is eyeing a theatrical and VOD release for early 2017.

More casting news has arrived for the sequel to Jurassic World as Variety is reporting that Toby Jones and Prometheus actor Rafe Spall are in talks to join Universal and Amblin Entertainment’s next chapter in the Jurassic World franchise.

Jones (pictured) and Spall join Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, who are returning to star. Sources say producers are also getting ready to test for two other key roles in the project but wanted to get these offers out of the way first before making choices.

Plot details are unknown at this time, including who Jones and Spall will be playing in the sequel to the 2015 hit.

J.A. Bayona is on board to direct with Frank Marshall producing along with Pat Crowley and Belén Atienza. Colin Trevorrow, who helmed Jurassic World, penned the script with his writing partner Derek Connolly.

We cannot wait for the next season of the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things.” As if we needed any more incentive to tune in, THR is reporting that the cast is growing in very good ways as three more actors have signed on for active duty!

Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen has been cast as Roman. Per Netflix, she’s “an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab…

Sean Astin (The Goonies, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) will play Bob Newby, “a kindhearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) and now manages the local Hawkins Radio Shack.

Paul Reiser (pictured; Aliens, Whiplash) has been cast as Dr. Owens, “a high-ranking member within the Department of Energy on a ‘clean-up’ assignment, tasked with containing the events of last year.

Paul Reiser

The nine-episode “Stranger Things” Season 2 arrives in 2017 and will be set in the fall of 1984. Previously announced new cast members include Sadie Sink as Max, a tough and confident girl whose appearance, behavior, and pursuits seem more typical of boys than of girls in this era, and Dacre Montgomery as Billy, Max’s hyper-confident and edgy older stepbrother.

Another YA adaptation is on its way as Deadline is reporting that Columbia Pictures and Matt Tolmach pre-emptively acquired movie rights to The Diabolic, the just-published young adult sci-fi novel by S.J. Kincaid.

Simon & Schuster released it last week. Tolmach will produce through his Matt Tolmach Productions banner, with David Manpearl exec producing. Colpix exec veep David Beaubaire will shepherd, with Tolmach exec Brad Zimmerman.

The novel is described as Red Queen meets The Hunger Games – as the galaxy’s most fierce warrior, a humanoid teen masquerades as a senator’s daughter and a hostage of the galactic court. When the power-mad emperor learned the young girl’s senator father is planning a rebellion, she is summoned to the Galactic Court to be turned into a hostage. The deadly humanoid assumes her identity and has an awakening as she deals with all the backstabbing and politics inherent in a crumbling empire.

Tolmach is currently producing the Jake Kasdan-directed Jumanji, starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black, as well as the Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell and Kate McKinnon-starrer Rock That Body, both of which are in production. He’s also is executive producing Futureman, the Hulu series with Seth Rogen, James Goldberg and James Weaver.

Sony Pictures VP Literary Department Ryan Doherty brought in the book, and the author’s deal was made by Paradigm for Waxman Leavell Literary Agency.

AFM 2016: Vision Films Acquires The Evil Within; New Trailer and Artwork

0
0

The Evil Within (aka The Storyteller) made a big splash at the American Film Market this past weekend with Vision Films acquiring worldwide rights and planning a domestic release in North America in 2017.

We have all the details below along with the film’s new trailer and artwork.

From the Press Release:
The Evil Within is the first and only film written and directed by the late Andrew Getty, grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. Andrew Getty was a horror film fanatic, The Evil Within being his passion project that took over a decade to complete. Getty and his FX team created their own complex special effects and animatronics and shot much of the principal photography in his home.

The Evil Within stars Frederick Koehler (Death Race), Sean Patrick Flanery (Saw 3D: The Final Chapter), Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers, “Saw), Michael Berryman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Hills Have Eyes), and Kim Darby (True Grit). It was produced by Robert Hickey, Kent Van Vleet, and Michael Luceri.

Dennis Peterson (Koehler) is a mentally challenged teen who lives with his older brother, John (Flanery). While John struggles between caring for Dennis and maintaining a relationship with his increasingly impatient girlfriend, Lydia (Meyer), Dennis finds a friend in his own reflection in an antique mirror. But in reality the reflection is soon revealed to be an Evil Entity (Berryman) who is more charming, smarter, and stronger than Dennis and instructs him to do horrific things in order to “fix” his brain.

Tortured and confused, Dennis embarks on a murderous rampage, collecting the bodies in his basement. A police investigation, helmed by a determined social worker (Darby), targets the Petersons in an attempt to uncover the truth behind the murders. With the walls rapidly closing in, Dennis makes his final play… with dire results.

Producer Luceri says, “After Andrew died, I made it my mission to see that his film was completed. I have been on this project from the beginning. Andrew was such a perfectionist; each and every shot had to be perfect before he would move on. When he was young, Andrew told me that he would have these really powerful, twisted dreams, so scary that he didn’t want to believe they came from inside him, so he had this idea that it was this ‘storyteller’ who created the dreams, and that became the genesis of the film’s story.”

Vision Films’ Managing Director/CEO Lise Romanoff states, “This film is downright mesmerizing and creepy. It is such a shame that the Getty family, while blessed with such great wealth, has suffered so much tragedy. I hope we make Andrew and his family proud by releasing this incredible work of art.”

Hollywood became a reality this week when a venomous green viper was let loose on a passenger flight in the style of Snakes on a Plane. Watch the video of the real snake on the plane below.

On a flight from Torreon to Mexico City, the reptile was seen slithering around the overhead luggage section. The plane was given a priority landing, and the snake was swiftly removed by animal control. An investigation is currently being carried out to determine how it got loose in the first place.

The Mummy Will Terrify!

We’re all looking forward to seeing what Universal does with the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe (UMCU) it’s building, and it sounds as if Uni isn’t afraid to show off the creatures’ dark sides. During an interview with THR writer Jon Spaihts had the following to say about the new version of The Mummy.

In The Mummy I think we’re going to see the first Mummy film in the entire Universal canon with the true power to terrify. The earliest [Boris] Karloff and Bela Lugosi Mummy movies were scary in a small way, perhaps a dated way. They were almost parlor movies. Subsequent movies have been more swashbuckling. This one is going to have all of that action and adventure, but a legitimate power to terrify. I think that’s going to be the new experience of that film.

The film stars Tom Cruise as a special forces soldier (or former soldier); Sofia Boutella as the iconic monster; Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll; Annabelle Wallis as the film’s female lead, an archaeologist; along with Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance.

The studio tapped Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to help develop a monster universe for Universal with rebooted versions of classic monster movies. Kurtzman is also on board to produce alongside Morgan and Sean Daniel.

Spaihts is penning the script. Plot details are vague other than the fact that the film will be set in the present day, unlike the previous three installments starring Brendan Fraser.

Universal executive VP of production Jon Mone and VP of development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio.

AFM 2016: Puberty Gets Scary for Abbie Cornish and More

Puberty. Your voice is awkward, you’re covered in pimples, your skin is oily, and your chances of getting laid are zero. In the new horror flick Puberty, those are the least of your problems.

Variety is reporting that Abbie Cornish, Dylan Gelula, and Garrett Wareing are starring in Puberty, Eddie Alcazar’s psychological thriller for Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Films.

Alcazar is producing and directing Puberty from a script by Ted Kupper, based on a story by Alcazar and Kupper. Flying Lotus is executive producing and composing the score for the film. It’s the second feature for Brainfeeder Films, which was announced in September at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival.

Production is set for this winter in Los Angeles with CAA handling domestic rights. Brainfeeder unveiled the project at this year’s American Film Market, where it launched international sales.

Wareing is portraying a teenage boy with a violent past who is haunted by dark visions and enters a mysterious clinic where the patients wildly transform their bodies and minds using genetic engineering. He undergoes treatment, installing therapeutic implants into his body — but discovers that purity of mind is not exactly what he’d imagined.

AFM 2016: Vixens Bringing Lots of Horror!

0
0

AFM continues on, and the genre news keeps coming! Variety is reporting that Gary Farkas, Clement Lepoutre, and Olivier Muller of the Paris-based production company Vixens are building a stylish slate of director-driven, genre-bending projects, including Turkish helmer Can Evrenol’s Housewife, Swedish-Iranian director Milad Alami’s The Charmer, and French director Christophe Deroo’s Beyond the Wall of Sleep.

Housewife marks the English-language debut of Evrenol, an up-and-coming Turkish helmer who made his debut with Baskin. Described by Vixens as being in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and Dario Argento’s films, the film was written by Evrenol with his co-scribe on Baskin, Cem Ozuduru. Turkish outfit Mo Film is co-producing.

Vixens is currently negotiating with several partners on Housewife, including Lene Borglum at Space Rocket Nation, the Danish production outfit behind Nicolas Winding Refn’s films, Manuel Chiche’s French company The Joker,  and XYZ in the U.S. Shooting will take place in January in Istanbul.

Beyond the Wall of Sleep, meanwhile, will be the sophomore outing of Christophe Deroo, whose debut Sam Was Here played at Sitges, Etrange Festival in Paris, and Gerardmer, among other festivals. An adaptation of a novel by Howard Phillips Lovecraft by the same name, the Gothic supernatural film will be shot in two parts against a backdrop reminiscent of The Revenant. Shooting will kick off during the last quarter of 2017.

The Charmer marks the first feature film of Alami, a promising emerging filmmaker whose shorts have played at festivals including Karlovy Vary, Goteborg and Cannes’ Directors Fortnight.

Finally, The Charmer, a psychological drama with some thriller elements, revolves around a Danish-Iranian underachiever who lives under a fake identity and is forced to reconsider his life after falling in love with a woman.

The Charmer will have a disturbing, surreal atmosphere, said Farkas, who previously worked at Wild Bunch. Denmark’s Good Company Films is lead producing the project.

Also on Vixens’ roster is David Raboy’s The Giant, an English-speaking horror film in the vein of It Follows. Sold by Insiders MadRiver, The Giant will be shooting in the summer.

Look for more on all of these projects as we get it.
