The Lodger (1944)
December 13, 2016
Director: John Brahm
Starring: Merle Oberon, George Sanders, Laird Cregar, Sara Allgood, Sir Cedric Hardwicke

Synopsis:
Few film directors have mastered the art of suspense, thrills and intriguing plot twists the way that John Brahm (The Undying Monster) did – many consider his 1944 remake of the Alfred Hitchcock silent film about Jack the Ripper to be far superior to the original! After a mysterious young man named Slade (Laird Cregar, I Wake Up Screaming) rents a London flat, a murder spree begins nearby and the landlady suspects her new lodger to be Jack the Ripper. Kitty (Merle Oberon, Wuthering Heights), a talented singer ignores warnings about the crimes from her new love interest, Inspector John Warwick (George Sanders, Hangover Square) who’s assigned to the case – or the man who may have committed them and soon she becomes Slade’s object of obsession in this pulse-pounder that packs an unsettling punch. Featuring stunning cinematography by the great Lucien Ballard (A Kiss Before Dying) and great supporting performances by Sara Allgood (Blackmail) and Sir Cedric Hardwicke (Rope).

Therapy (2016)

$
0
0

therapyStarring Nathan Ambrosioni, Thierry Azzopardi, Vanessa Azzopardi, Luna Belan,
Nathalie Couturier

Written and directed by Nathan Ambrosioni

French found footage thriller Therapy combines the tried-and-true teens in distress slasher with a crime procedural with some success and, unavoidably, some cliched pitfalls. The film definitely has its moments and does just enough to probably keep your interest, but in trying to have an original structure, the more predictable aspects of Therapy are uncovered along with the video equipment found at the scene of the crime.

After discovering an abandoned house while camping, one of the group, Stephanie (Vanessa Azzopardi), vanishes. As the remaining teens search for her, her captive’s perspective is also shown as Stephanie recoils in terror, hoping her friends can save the day. The story interweaves an investigation centering around the detectives who find the footage with flashbacks showing what happened during the night in question. Exploring the evidence leads the cops to realize the horrors that the teens experienced is still ongoing.

Therapy is at its most effective when it focuses on what’s happening to Stephanie while her friends frantically search for her. It feels immediate and threatening while also slowly revealing a deeper mystery at play. The figure who snatched her up is just another freak with a mask at first. Then a connection arises between the two that gives the audience a case to solve themselves as the police try to put the pieces together as well.

Jumping back and forth to the actual footage and the investigators as they look for clues is a good idea in script form, but in execution the momentum and any building intensity take a hit each time the story transitions ahead. There’s a lack of memorable moments in Therapy until the ending approaches, offering up a shocking reveal that removes some of the randomness of Stephanie’s original attack.

Although this revelation is a welcome story development, the cliché moments seen in so many movies that include the found footage formula can’t be completely overcome. For the lovers of the sub-genre, Therapy is necessary viewing; but if you’re growing tired of it, the French sensibilities of actor/writer/director Nathan Ambrosioni don’t offer up enough to break away from the pack.

What’s promising is that Ambrosioni is only seventeen years old and shows a pretty sure hand behind the camera. If he keeps working in horror and continues trying to inject some originality into old tropes, he may turn out to be a director worth seeking out at future film festivals and beyond.

Arrival (2016)

$
0

arrival-poster1Starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker

Directed by Denis Villeneuve

Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario) is one of the most brainy and badass directors working today. He’s a master at blending intellectualism with dread and chills. Unfortunately, his new movie Arrival is only halfway there: It’s smart, but it’s slow.

Here’s the deal: Louise Banks (Adams) is a lauded linguistics professor who’s called to serve her country when she joins an elite team of investigators after spaceships that look like gigantic puffy surfboards touch down in 12 diverse locations around the planet. She’s teamed up with physicist Ian Donnelly (Renner) and overseen by Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker).

Before long the nations’ military heads freak out, teetering on the edge of a nuclear button-pushing global meltdown. Louise is convinced the Cthulhu-looking aliens have arrived with peaceful intentions, but she can’t quite crack the code to their usual language. They squirt ink from their tentacles to spell out Rorschach-like symbols that must mean something, but… what? Desperate to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and possibly all of mankind.

Adams is definitely the star of this show, and her performance is compelling enough to keep the story going even as it sags due to a surprising lack of suspense. Not that I expect every intergalactic science fiction flick to portray an alien invasion as evil, but in this case there’s really no enemy to root against as we pull for Louise to solve the mystery of the squid-like “Heptapod” arrival and attempt to communicate. There’s a series of flashbacks shown throughout the film (which turn out to be something else entirely) that are intercut too frequently with the main story as it unfolds, making for a choppy experience.

The somber cinematography by Bradford Young is reminiscent of a surreal Zdzisław Beksiński painting. Young is best known for shooting Selma and is next slated for the new Star Wars movie, but perhaps his most beautiful work was on a little-known indie called Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. His work on that was compared to classic Terrence Malick visuals. The picture is nicely underscored by composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.

In the plus column, Arrival feels like a dreamily updated version of 1951’s The Day the Earth Stood Still. On the negative side, there’s not enough excitement or revelation to justify its two-hour runtime. See it on the big screen if you love sci-fi and don’t mind a lack of horror, but if not save it for streaming.

Beware the Slenderman, directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky, is a new documentary heading our way courtesy of HBO Documentary Films.  We’ve been talking about it for quite a while, and today we finally have a trailer for it.

A creature of fantasy… an act of savagery… Beware the Slenderman premieres January 23rd.

In Beware the Slenderman, Brodsky uses the fictional figure to explore not only the effect that internet lore has on real-life actions, but also how the digital age is saturating the imagination and actions of children. You may recall the headlines back in 2014 when two young girls stabbed a classmate nearly twenty times and claimed that Slenderman made them do it; the director reportedly got exclusive access to the families of both girls charged with the crime.

Synopsis:
On May 31, 2014, in the woods outside of Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year old girls stabbed their classmate 19 times. This is the true story of what drove them to do it.

Earlier this year I was on the set of Christopher Lawrence Chapman’s Inoperable. Late in the day a man of large stature and huge personality arrived, decked out in an orderly outfit and a menacing glare. That was Chris Hahn, former WWE pro-wrestler (as Johnny Paradise).

Hahn had been making a name for himself by appearing in a number of films, in and out of our beloved genre, as both an actor and stuntman. His recent works include ClownTown, Funhouse Massacre, and Syfy’s Axe Giant.

Outside of horror, Chris can be found in the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead and the recent “MacGyver” TV series!

Having spent a some time talking to Mr. Hahn on set, I knew he’d have some interesting stories to tell us about his varied career. So we sat down with the former Johnny Paradise to find out how he became involved with the horror movie industry. Check it out below!
