Seven Weeks of Reshoots Under Way on World War Z

0
0

After hearing in March that the release date for World War Z was being moved from December of this year to June 21, 2013, we wondered if maybe things weren't going so well for the film, and now we have our answer: Star Brad Pitt has joined some of his fellow actors in Budapest for seven weeks of additional shooting.

Per the UK's Daily Mail, the picture started filming nearly a year ago and then wrapped last summer — but clearly director Marc Forster and his producers aren’t happy because seven weeks is a long time to re-shoot a film. Details are sketchy at this point as to exactly how much of the flick is being modified, and it’s not certain whether or not all of the film’s other stars such as Matthew Fox and James Badge Dale are with Pitt for the new shooting schedule, but we'll keep our eyes and ears open for additional info.

The novel is set 10 years after a global zombie epidemic and is an oral history told from many perspectives around the world. Brad Pitt is playing a U.N. worker gathering stories of the great zombie war, and his Plan B shingle is producing. Mireille Enos ("Big Love", "The Killing") plays his wife, a mother of two girls.

Assuming all goes well, look for Forster's adaptation of the Max Brooks zombie infestation novel World War Z in theatres next summer.

Box Office: Snow White Takes a Big Bite of the Apple, Piranha 3DD Toothless, Prometheus Already Scaring Abroad

Box Office: Snow White Takes a Big Bite of the Apple, Piranha 3DD Toothless, Prometheus Already Scaring AbroadSnow White proved to be the fairest of them all at the U.S. box office this weekend while Prometheus has already begun taking the world by storm and Piranha 3DD turned out to be nothing more than a bottom feeder.

The dark fantasy retelling of a classic fairy tale took the top spot at the box office, doing better than expected. Snow White and the Huntsman raked in $56.26 million for the weekend, the fourth highest opening weekend of the year, according to Box Office Mojo.

That knocked Men in Black 3 down to second place with $29.6 million. The Will Smith threequel only dropped 46% from its opening weekend, which is actually a really strong holdover, although its numbers are still not quite on a par with Men in Black 2’s run.

That’s leaves us with Piranha 3DD, a lowest common denominator movie whose numbers were even lower. Dimension only released the sequel on 86 movie screens nationwide while simultaneously making it available by way of VOD. We don’t have totals as to how it did on VOD, but its pathetic $179,000 big screen opening makes you wonder why they bothered putting it in theaters at all. That’s barely more than $2,000 per screen. Those are pretty terrible numbers. We’re talking Creature bad here.

Next week Charlize Theron goes into battle with herself as Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Alien non-quel Prometheus finally opens. The film already opened to big numbers in the UK, France, and Russia as well as 13 other international locales. It will be very interesting to see how a big budget R-rated sci-fi horror movie fares at the summer box office.

A Necessary Death Takes Place on DVD

In 2008 a young director by the name of Daniel Stamm introduced a truly shocking little film onto the festival circuit. So controversial was the movie that Stamm was nearly lynched in Kosovo after screening a rough cut of it at a festival there. Eventually the buzz around A Necessary Death led the filmmaker to his biggest gig, The Last Exorcism.

Deemed too odd to market by most distributors, the flick quietly hit DVD via MPI home video last Tuesday and if you haven't seen it, you should really give it a look as calling it unique is a bit of an understatement. A Necessary Death stars Matthew Tilley and G.J. Echternkamp. Check out the artwork and a trailer below.

Synopsis
Film student Gilbert (GJ Echternkamp) has a novel idea for his final thesis project -- find someone who wants to kill themselves and follow them through the final days of their life. Gilbert posts a message on the internet looking for a suitable subject, and after interviewing a handful of people with various reasons for taking their life, he chooses a British expatriate (Matt Tilley) who is slowly dying of an inoperable brain tumor. Assured that his subject will actually commit suicide on film, Gilbert believes he has found the perfect candidate to explore the nature of the act objectively. But as filming goes on, it soon becomes apparent that the creative process is impacting the man's road towards death, and before long Gilbert and his crew become more involved than they ever wanted to be.

E3 2012: Dante Battles With His Identity in DmC Trailer

Capcom's DmC is right around the corner, and we have the game's new E3 trailer to share showing Dante's battle with his own identity as being the offspring of an angel and demon. He develops almost a split personality, which plays into the DmC gameplay.

Detailing Dante’s early years and set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC: Devil May Cry will retain the stylish action, fluid combat and self-assured protagonist that have defined the iconic series but inject a more brutal and visceral edge.

The Dante of DmC is a young man who has no respect for authority or society in general. Dante knows that he is not human, but also that he is not like the demons that have tormented him throughout his life. Caught between worlds, he feels like an outcast.
He is now discovering and coming to terms with what it means to be the child of a demon and an angel. This split personality has a real impact on gameplay with Dante being able to call upon angel and demon abilities at will, transforming his Rebellion sword on the fly to dramatically affect both combat and movement.

For DmC Capcom has teamed up with UK development studio, Ninja Theory, renown for delivering action titles with compelling characters and narrative coupled with high production values. The combination of Ninja Theory’s expertise and Capcom’s unrivalled heritage in producing combat focused action titles will ensure that this latest addition to the multi-million selling series will remain true to the Devil May Cry DNA so cherished by the fans, while bringing a new level of cinematic quality to the title.

The latest chapter in the Lost Planet series comes to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC in early 2013. The extreme and unpredictable conditions that characterized the Lost Planet series return, harsher than ever before. Lost Planet 3 reveals new truths about the foreboding planet and the colonial history of E.D.N. III.

Lost Planet 3 introduces Jim Peyton, a rig pilot who leaves Earth to take on a hazardous but lucrative contract on E.D.N. III. Working for Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) who are preparing the planet for colonization, Jim joins his fellow pioneers at the Coronis base and begins surveying the uncharted terrain and obtaining samples of the planet’s energy supply – Thermal Energy.

Exclusive Interview: Filmmaker Justin McConnell Talks The Collapsed and More

0
0

Exclusive Interview: Filmmaker Justin McConnell Talks The Collapsed and MoreCo-writer/director Justin McConnell's The Collapsed hits DVD shelves everywhere on Tuesday, June 5th, and in anticipation of its release Dread Central recently caught up with him to discuss the film and lots more.

In The Collapsed, which is being released by Anchor Bay Entertainment, a family of four desperately tries to survive in the wake of the apocalypse; retreating to the woods, they soon find that the least of their worries involve the other survivors around them.

Read on for our exclusive interview with the independent filmmaker, and look for The Collapsed everywhere tomorrow!

Dread Central: Can you start off by discussing how The Collapsed came about and more about your approach as a storyteller?

Justin McConnell: Well, I had this other story that I had been trying to get financed called The Eternal back in 2008, but we were having a lot of financing problems so it kind of got put on hold. While we were figuring things out, we wrote 4 or 5 more scripts that all tie in together in this universe we created. Once we realized that The Eternal wasn't going to be happening soon, we focused on a new story, and that ended up being The Collapsed.

So I took one story element from this world I had created and built a post-apocalyptic thriller around that story element; with this seed I took, I figured out what I could actually do on the budget that I did have available to me, and then I built something around it. Originally I thought I would be going in more of a serial killer direction with the story, but then I ended up going with the end of the world and zombies because that really lent itself well to our overall storytelling universe.

With The Collapsed we did not have the budget to wow people with huge set pieces or devastated cities falling down around you; it just wasn't in the budget. But I think it is those limitations that helped us get to the root of what we were trying to do with the story a lot faster in some ways.

Dread Central: There is quite a bit of atmosphere at play in the flick; how important was it to you to get that established quickly and keep it going throughout?

Justin McConnell: You know, my biggest concern with The Collapsed first and foremost was the tone, which is part of that atmosphere; the tone was going to be key to the success of the film, and since we didn't have a big safety net of money to fall back on, we had to make it work with whatever we could. We knew this wasn't going to be about dodging bullets and those kind of scenes; we wanted there to be a bit more of a subtle, supernatural feel to the kills so they kind of sneak up on you while you're watching.

Dread Central: Did the budget also sort of dictate the subtle approach you had to go with then, too?

Justin McConnell: Oh sure. We didn't have the budget to be very 'in your face' with the kills and everything in this so we really had to focus on slowly building the suspense throughout. There had to be this feeling that anything could happen at any time, and because we take our time, it allowed for a lot of great character development moments in The Collapsed. Some fans got it and some fans didn't so it was risky, but I liked that we kept things unexpected regardless.

But the other thing we wanted to do was make this a very personal story, a very personal look at the post-apocalyptic world, and I don't think anyone has quite spun this subgenre this way. I think we've definitely made something that stands out from other horror films on the same subject, and I think that's what fans will enjoy most.

Dread Central: Do you plan on returning to those initial projects now that The Collapsed is coming out; what kind of projects are keeping you busy these days?

Justin McConnell: We do want to make all of these films still, and hopefully now we can do The Eternal next; we are now in a better position than we ever have been before with The Collapsed coming out so I think we'll definitely be making the next one soon. I'm not sure if it will be late this year or early 2013, but we do want to make more films from this universe we've created. There are also a few projects outside of this realm as well, but I think we're focusing on this next project and a potential web series that is brewing, too.

But I will say that The Eternal will be the antithesis of The Collapsed though; there will be heads splitting every five minutes, and we will be right in the audience's face with the gore. That has to have that kind of tone because the kind of story it is. It will be a lot of fun to change things up for the next one.

For more visit the official The Collapsed website, and then dig on the official The Collapsed Facebook page.

Synopsis:
In the wake of the end of the world, a family of four desperately tries to survive against insurmountable odds. Their goal: escaping the city and traveling to the rural community they once called home, Dover's Bend. The constant threat of a violent death forcing them to stay as far away from civilization as possible, they take to the forest, soon to discover the danger posed by other survivors may be the least of their worries.

E3 2012: Microsoft Fires First

0
0

Microsoft officially kicked off the E3 2012 festivities with its press briefing dubbed “Xbox 360 Entertainment Evolved 2012.” While it was a little light on huge surprises, they did show off exciting demos and some interesting new features hitting the Xbox 360 in the coming months.

E3 2012: Microsoft Fires First

Here are some of the highlights.

  • Halo 4
  • The show got rolling with an absolutely incredible looking trailer and demo for Halo 4. It started off with things going bad on a UNSC ship that eventually causes it to crash down on an unnamed planet. Luckily for all involved, Master Chief is on the scene. He has a small skirmish with some Covenant forces, but before he can finish them off, the last one standing is taken out by an unseen shooter. As Chief moves closer to the downed ship, he starts encountering what appear to be robotic A.I. enemies. While Chief is dispatching these new foes Cortanna mentions that she thinks she recognizes who they are…the Forerunners.

This demo completely blew me away. The graphics and animations have gotten a complete overhaul since Halo: Reach. It appears that 343 Studios is more than capable of taking the reins of Bungie’s storied franchise. I can’t wait to see more. Halo 4 is scheduled to be released on November 6th, 2012.

  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist
  • Sam Fisher is back. In the newest installment of the Splinter Cell franchise, Sam is tasked with taking down terrorists who want US troops out of their country. The area they showed during the demo took place along the Iran/Iraq border. This game looks very much like a sequel to Conviction, but everything has been given a nice visual upgrade, especially the animation. Mark and execute makes a return, along with the more action based pace that the series seems to be taking a turn towards.

They also showed off some optional Kinect support. You’re now able to actually say “Hey you” to grab the attention of nearby enemies. You’re also able to use your voice to call in air strikes.

Unfortunately, it appears that the iconic voice of Fisher, Michael Ironside, is sitting this one out. Bummer. Other than that the game looks great. It’s out spring 2013.

  • EA Sports
  • Madden 13 and FIFA 13 are better with Kinect. Normally you have to take this kind of statement with a grain of salt, but what they showed off here makes it seem like they’re starting to figure out what the Kinect is actually good at when used in honest to goodness real games.

The Madden stuff isn’t all that surprising. You can call plays, audibles and say “hike” to actually hike the ball. The kind of stuff you’d expect Kinect to do in an American Football game. FIFA, on the other hand, had some more exciting implementations. Aside from the standard stuff, changing defensive positioning and play calling, FIFA 13 uses Kinect in one other quite ingenious way: If you disagree with a call by the ref and vocally make your opinion known while sitting on the couch, the in-game ref can actually call a penalty and give a yellow card. If it works as advertised, it could be a very amusing new feature in future sports games.

  • Fable: The Journey
  • Lots of magic and horses. You know, Fable stuff.

  • Gears of War: Judgment
  • There wasn’t an on stage demo for this one, only a trailer (really?). It’s a prequel starring Baird and Cole from the main Gears games. Launches sometime in 2013.

  • Forza: Horizon
  • Lots of cars driving on scenic vistas. Also, dubstep. October 23rd, 2012.

  • Smattering of non-game stuff
  • This was the section where they rattled off a whole bunch of stuff outside the realm of games. You’re not able to search Bing by genre. 12 new languages for Bing voice search. New partnerships with Nickelodeon, Paramount and Machinma. NBA and NHL on Xbox. Lots and lots of new ESPN live content. Xbox Music (clever name), which looks to be replacing their current Zune branding. A new partnership with Nike and the announcement of Nike+, which appears to be a new fitness program using Kinect.

  • Xbox SmartGlass
  • At first this seemed like it was going to be another of the “blah blah look at all the cool but ultimately useless stuff that your Xbox can do but you’ll never actually use” segment, but they actually showed off some useful looking features. SmartGlass is a new application that brings the stuff you already own together. They showed off examples of being able to start a movie on a mobile device (whether it’s iOS, Windows, or Android) and finish it up on the Xbox. Even more than that, when you transfer the film from the small to the big screen, your mobile device will display information about the movie you’re watching. They also mentioned possible implementation with games. The examples they showed were more “what may happen” rather than “what it happening,” but it was interesting nonetheless. First was SmartGlass in a football game like Madden. You’re able to call and alter plays on your mobile device. Second was Halo 4. Not a whole lot of information there, but they had an example of you seeing something in game and then having information about that item popping up on your device, along with some multi-player implementation as well.

SmartGlass was something I wasn’t really aware of before, but now I’m quite interested in checking more of it out. The fact that you don’t need to buy anything new to have all this stuff work is very exciting. No release date was given.

  • Tomb Raider
  • An onstage demo for Lara Croft’s gritty reboot was up next. It started with Lara icing some dudes quietly with her trusty bow and arrow, but before long her cover was blown and it was officially on. The combat looked quite a bit like the Uncharted series. There was quite a bit of climbing and shooting, accompanied by some hiding behind cover, of course. Incredible looking animations were on display here, which appears to be a running theme for this show. They also announced that the first piece of DLC will be available first on Xbox. DLC announcement before the game even has a release date? Come on, guys.

  • Ascend: New Gods
  • Developed by the guys behind the Toy Soldiers franchise. Swords and sorcery with a Shadow of the Colossus kind of feel. Looks cool.

  • LocoCycle
  • LOCOCYCLE! Sorry, it’s just an awesome name. Developed by Twisted Pixel, it’s about a secret agent/assassin Tron motorcycle or something? Nothing was really explained in the trailer, but the developer is solid. Release in 2013.

  • Gore Verbinski’s Matter
  • Gives off a bit of futuristic Marble Madness vibe. Made for Kinect. 2013.

  • Resident Evil 6
  • The demo started off with rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy having a pretty bad day. He’s surrounded by zombies, everything is on fire and there’s a helicopter trying to take him out. After fighting his way out of that predicament, he has a chance to get some orders from the woman in his ear, who sounded a lot like Ashley Graham from Resident Evil 4. After getting his orders, he looks over the burning city and says “What happened, Chris?” referring to the series' other main protagonist, Chris Redfield. After that little bit of introspection EVERYTHING STARTS EXPLODING. After outrunning explosion after explosion Leon once again finds himself surrounded by dozens and dozens of the undead.

Resident Evil 6 looks to continue the series’ trajectory into full-on action game. This time around the shooting looks to be taking inspiration from more modern third-person shooters. If the story continues Resident Evil’s special brand of insanity, this very well could be the best one yet. Resident Evil 6 launches October 2nd, 2012.

  • Wreckateer
  • Demo for XBLA exclusive Kinect game. You launch boulders from a catapult to knock down castles and use an aftertouch mechanic to guide them on their way. Comparisons to Angry Birds are inevitable. Releases summer 2012.

  • South Park: The Stick of Truth
  • In this RPG developed by Obsidian, things are bad in South Park, Colorado, and it’s up to the four boys plus a new player created/controlled character to save the day. A trailer is shown which looked to show gameplay. If it is, it looks incredible and exactly like the show. Trey Parker and Matt Stone hit the stage to talk about getting the (crappy) look of the show into a video game and the challenges of designing and writing for games. I don’t think they’re reading off a teleprompter because they’re actually funny and entertaining. I cannot wait to see more from this game. It very well could be my current most anticipated game.

  • Dance Central 3
  • Usher shows up for an absolutely unnecessary performance in promotion of Dance Central 3. Some gameplay was shown; it looked like Dance Central.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  • Last thing up is a live demo for the biggest video game franchise on earth. Taking place in 2025, you play as David Mason, son of the previous game’s protagonist, Alex Mason. In this demo they were tasked with saving the lady President (so you know it’s the future) from terrorists attacking Los Angeles. Being set in the future, it seems like they’re having some fun designing the weapons for this sequel. The one they primarily featured in this demo was a sniper rifle that could see and shoot through hard cover. There was a point in the demo where a choice in paths was presented. You could either hang back and snipe or rappel down a wall to get into close combat action. Branching paths in a Call of Duty game? Unheard of! The demo ended with a very impressive section where you pilot a VTOL jet. It looks like Call of Duty, yeah, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Black Ops 2 hits on November 13, 2012.

The opening shots have been fired. How will the other big boys respond? Stay tuned.

    E3 2012: Zeno Clash II Arriving 2013

    0
    0

Zeno Clash II is coming to PC, Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network in 2013. The game will take you through the architectural wonders of Zenozoik and the battle with the angry denizens. You will encounter various creatures within the world that will bring its true horror to life!

ATLUS, a brand of Index Digital Media, Inc., in collaboration with ACE Team, developer of Zeno Clash and Rock of Ages, today unveiled Zeno Clash II, sequel to the award-winning indie first-person melee brawler, coming in 2013 to PC, Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system.

Building upon the daring visual design and gratifying first-person fisticuffs of the acclaimed original, Zeno Clash II is bigger, bolder, and better in every way. Zenozoik comes alive like never before, an open world waiting to be explored, one rendered with breathtaking splendor. As Ghat, players can fully and freely explore every natural and architectural wonder his world has to offer. In addition to most of the characters, enemies, and items from the first game-all of which return with dramatic visual enhancement-Ghat can also expect to encounter awe-inspiring new sights, jaw-dropping new creature designs, and wildly creative new weapons and items.

Beyond visuals, Zeno Clash II also dares to refine and add to its predecessor's gameplay foundation for success. The game's heralded first-person brawling mechanics are further refined, improving on the integral enemy "Lock-on" function as well as giving the player pinpoint control over where their strikes land. New RPG elements allow players to gain more strength, master defense, or improve in other areas in order to give Ghat and his companion Rimat a better chance of survival.

Lastly, and perhaps of the greatest excitement, the entire game can be experienced with drop-in/drop-out online cooperative multiplayer. Ghat can now be joined by his sister Rimat in battling past the angry denizens bent on stopping them from accomplishing their goal.

"The world of Zenozoik is one of wild dreams and wilder nightmares," stated Andres Bordeu, co-founder of ACE Team. "This is part of the reason we are working on Zeno Clash II, to give players the opportunity to explore Zenozoik with a friend via online cooperative multiplayer, turning those moments of wonder and awe into a shared adventure. We will make certain that going back and forth between solo and cooperative play preserves the consistency and impact of the narrative experience, while still allowing friends easily drop in and out of the game's fulfilling exploration and visceral melee combat."

Zeno Clash II is scheduled to release in early 2013 on Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Store, and Steam. For more information, visit the official Zeno Clash II website.
