Rest in Peace: Tom Neyman

Manos: The Hands of Fate has developed a pretty huge cult following over the years, and it’s with a heavy heart that we report that the master himself, Tom Neyman, passed away on November 12th.

The news came from his daughter, Jackey Raye Neyman Jones, who confirmed his passing via Facebook. No one ever expected to see this little movie take on such an incredible life all its own, but we’re thrilled that it did.

Tom was a humble and happy man and he will be missed. We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to not only offer our deepest of condolences to Neyman’s friends, family members, and constituents but also to revere the master one last time with as much love and thanks as possible. All hail!

William Friedkin Dispels The Exorcist Curse

For a long time now there have been stories of certain film productions being “cursed,” and one of the top projects always mentioned has been The Exorcist.

Recently JoBlo reported on a list of bedeviled productions and had this to say regarding Friedkin’s masterpiece…

Before audiences began vomiting and blacking out during screenings of William Friedkin’s film, the production itself was beset by numerous bizarre occurrences. From the death of a nightwatchman and a special effects worker to film crew suffering from dysentery and sunstroke, everything that could have gone wrong did on the set of the film. Ellen Burstyn injured her back and was bedridden, actor Jack McGowran died suddenly a week after wrapping the film, and the set burned down at one point and the film [was set] back six weeks. Eventually, Friedkin had an actual exorcism performed on the production, and once that happened, no further disturbances were recorded. Now that is a curse.

Sounds spooky, huh? Well… maybe not. Friedkin recently offered his two cents via Twitter…

Yep, that’s how you put the old kibosh on things!

David Goyer Heading TV Adaptation of Wild Fantasy Novel The Hike

IM Global Television is looking to take a walk on the wild – and absurd – side as the company has optioned Drew Magary’s truly bizarre-sounding fantasy novel The Hike to develop as a TV series. They’ve tapped David S. Goyer to exec produce along with Kevin Turen. Magary will pen the adaptation.

Per Deadline, The Hike, published in August, is a blend of fantasy, folklore, and video game tropes. The imaginative and absurdist adventure story centers around a family man who takes a walk into the woods of rural Pennsylvania, finding himself lost with only “The Path” to guide him – a mysterious gauntlet populated by dog-faced men, sentient clouds of smoke, and a caustic talking crab that may be his only chance to getting back to his loved ones.

“Needless to say, this isn’t your typical fantasy adventure tale,” said IM Global Television president Mark Stern. “As wild as it is, however, Drew’s ability to tap into deeply emotional themes makes this completely engrossing.”

Here’s the book synopsis; we’ll keep our eyes on the TV version to see how Dread-worthy it ends up being.

Synopsis:
When Ben, a suburban family man, takes a business trip to rural Pennsylvania, he decides to spend the afternoon before his dinner meeting on a short hike. Once he sets out into the woods behind his hotel, he quickly comes to realize that the path he has chosen cannot be given up easily. With no choice but to move forward, Ben finds himself falling deeper and deeper into a world of man-eating giants, bizarre demons, and colossal insects.

On a quest of epic, life-or-death proportions, Ben finds help comes in some of the most unexpected forms, including a profane crustacean and a variety of magical objects, tools, and potions. Desperate to return to his family, Ben is determined to track down the “Producer,” the creator of the world in which he is being held hostage and the only one who can free him from the path.

At once bitingly funny and emotionally absorbing, Magary’s novel is a remarkably unique addition to the contemporary fantasy genre, one that draws as easily from the world of classic folk tales as it does from video games. In The Hike, Magary takes readers on a daring odyssey away from our day-to-day grind and transports them into an enthralling world propelled by heart, imagination, and survival.

Been walking around all day? Exhausted and need a break? Why not head over to a Saw-themed leisure centre and have your back “worked” on!? Sounds like fun? Read on!

From the Press Release:
Parques Reunidos, one of the leading leisure park operators in the world, and Lionsgate (NYSE:LGF), a premier next generation global content leader, have reached a strategic agreement to develop Lionsgate branded leisure centres in high traffic shopping areas. These leisure centres will bring to life some of Lionsgate’s top film and television properties, such as The Hunger Games, the Saw franchise, Now You See Me, “Orange Is the New Black,” and “Nashville.”

Lionsgate’s global entertainment properties encompass highly recognizable brands such as The Hunger Games, which has grossed nearly $3 billion in worldwide box office, and the Saw franchise, one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all time with the next installment slated for release next year. The groundbreaking television series “Orange Is the New Black” and the fan favorite drama “Nashville” have six Emmy Awards® between them and are watched around the world. By expanding its footprint in the young adult market, where Lionsgate’s properties have been highly successful, Parques Reunidos hopes to diversify and expand upon its strong family audience.

The development of leisure centres in shopping malls and high traffic shopping areas represents one of the main growth strategies of Parques Reunidos. The company is currently negotiating the development of a total of 20 centres over the coming years, in addition to the five agreements already signed with the Thader Shopping Mall (Murcia), Dolce Vita Tejo (Lisbon), intu Lakeside (London), and the two at Madrid Xanadú that will be ready to open the following months.

Fernando Eiroa, CEO of Parques Reunidos, indicated, “This agreement enables us to continue growing by using one of the strongest tools for international expansion, leisure centres in shopping malls and high traffic shopping areas, and we are doing this hand in hand with Lionsgate, one of the most successful film and television production companies in the world.”

“This agreement joins those already signed in recent months and highlights the speed and efficacy with which we are closing major alliances. This enables us to accelerate our growth and consolidate our leadership of the sector,” he added.

Jenefer Brown, SVP, Location Based Entertainment at Lionsgate, said of the partnership, “We’re excited to be partnering with Parques Reunidos. They have proven success in the leisure market, and we feel they are the perfect partners to help us bring fans closer to the properties they love through these compelling, innovative experiences.”

Dee Snider Talks Strangeland 2 and Keeping the Nightmare Alive

Back in 2015 we told you that instead of a sequel, Dee Snider’s Strangeland would be getting a remake. Well, that didn’t happen either. Recently IconVsIcon caught up with Snider to get a status update.

I don’t know what the hell it is with that thing,” said Snider. “That whole experience could be a documentary in itself — ‘The Making of Strangeland 2.’ [laughs] What the fuck?! That is what it would be called, ‘The Making of Strangeland 2: WTF?!’ There are a lot of creative properties I am looking to explore… I was ready to dive in to all these other things when Damon Ranger approached me. So I put everything else on hold to focus on the album for the past year.

Strangely enough, Snider also revealed that there was to a sequel greenlit before Strangeland ever even came out. But that didn’t happen either.

“[The sequel] was greenlit back in 1997 before the first one came out,” he explains. “It was greenlit, a script was written, and we were in the earliest stages of pre-production when the company got indicted by the federal government! I hang out with the best people! [laughs] At that point in time, all the properties were seized and were tied up in the court system for seven years. It took me seven years just to get my property back, and at that point it was 2004. So, the script was there, and now I’m just trying to find a production company and the financing to do it!

With the film’s 20th anniversary approaching, Snider was asked if there were any plans for a re-release. Also, would he ever utilize crowdsourcing to finance a sequel…

Yes and no. I look for interest from other people to reinforce that the interest is out there. Case in point, the album. Damon challenged me to do something new, and we went in and demoed some stuff. In a very short amount of time we had major record deals in the United States and in Europe, so I knew I wasn’t alone and that there were other people who saw the vision as well. So, I need to see something from somebody besides myself and my own bank account! With that said, I’m at the point where I’m thinking about it more often. So many people ask me about Strangeland 2. Someone asked me, ‘Well, why don’t you crowdfund it?’ I’m thinking, ‘Good point!’ If people want this movie so bad, and it seems like when I go to these horror conventions… everybody wants it, maybe that is the route to go. Maybe this coming year, heading toward the 20th anniversary, what sounds like the right amount of time between funding it, filming it, and releasing it, I will see if the audience wants to put their money where their mouth is and join me in this journey!

Stay tuned, kids! Captain Howdy will surface again one way or the other. One can hope, right?

The Last of Us Has Breathed its Last Gasp

We told you a long while back that the status of a feature film version of Sony’s hit video game The Last of Us was looking pretty bleak, and with the passage of time things have only gotten worse.

Sam Raimi updated IGN on the latest…

Well, unfortunately that one — when we went to Neil [Druckman of game publisher Naughty Dog] with Ghost House Pictures, we were hoping to get the rights like we do any project and then we’d take it out and sell it but we’d control the rights. With this one he went to Sony — who I have a very good relationship with — but they have their own plans for it and I think Neil’s plan for it — I’m not trying to be political — Neil’s plan for it is not the same as Sony’s. And because my company doesn’t have the rights, I actually can’t help him too much. Even though I’m one of the producers on it the way he set it up, he sold his rights to Sony, Sony hired me as a producer by chance, and I can’t get the rights free for him so I’m not in the driver’s seat and I can’t tell you what Sony and Neil together will decide on. If they do move forward, I’d love to help them again.

Raimi continues, “Yes, I’m attached to it. I’m not too sure what that means. Right now it’s just sitting there. They don’t want to move forward, and it’s not my place to say why, and Neil, I think, is in a slight disagreement with them about how things should go so there’s a standstill. And I don’t have the power to move it.

The Last of Us centers on the unlikely pairing of a young girl and a hardened scavenger in a post-apocalyptic world.

Fede Alavrez and Sam Raimi Talk Don’t Breathe Sequel

Dread Central was one of a select few genre sites invited to participate in a special luncheon event – yeah, we said “luncheon” because the gala was held at the hoity-toity Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills – where the filmmakers behind the majorly successful film Don’t Breathe assembled to talk about its release on Blu-ray (coming 11/29). Producer Sam Raimi, co-writer Rodo Sayagues, and co-writer/director Fede Alvarez talked about that but were also very open to discussing their upcoming projects.

Alvarez’s next film is The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which is the follow-up to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. But he’s already planning a sequel to Don’t Breathe.

Don’t Breathe 2 is something we definitely want to do. The challenge obviously is [that] we just don’t want to do the same movie again, slap a 2 on it, and call it a day. We’d feel so embarrassed if we did that,” Alvarez said. He also revealed he didn’t “definitely” want to do it at first. His and Sayagues’ initial reaction to being presented with doing a sequel to Don’t Breathe was, “That’s Hollywood! That’s the devil! We don’t want to make a sequel just because we can. But then we got an idea that we’re really excited about, and I won’t tell you what it is because it will spoil the whole thing.

Raimi added, “It’s only the greatest idea for a sequel that I’ve ever heard! I’m not kidding!

Only time will tell if Jane Levy and Stephen Lang will be back for Round 2. Lang and Alvarez are cool, but Levy and the auteur don’t always see eye-to-eye. More on that when we return with our in-depth report on the whole shebang.

And the award for strangest headline of the day goes to…

Screen Daily is reporting that the Chilean genre specialist behind Hidden in the Woods and Downhill, Patricio Valladares, is preparing a body-horror film.

Embryo centers on the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster and will star regular Valladares collaborator Natalie Burn from Downhill. Valladares and writer Barry Keating anticipate a winter 2017 start in Kiev, and Valladares Pictures will produce alongside US-based 7 Heaven Productions.

The filmmaker told SD the idea for the story originated at the UK premiere of Downhill at FrightFest when an investor approached him, Burn, and Keating.

Downhill followed a champion bike rider and his girlfriend on a test ride for an exhibition performance in Chile who discover a man dying of a mysterious virus.

WTFilms handled international sales on that title, which has not yet opened in Valladares’s native Chile. No sales agent is so far on board Embryo.
