Underworld: Blood Wars – Screen Gems and Snapchat Team for New Interactivity

Technology and the world in general are changing at such a rapid pace it’s hard to keep up. Good thing we’re here to stay on top of stuff for ya! Deadline is reporting that Screen Gems is partnering with Snapchat again following their success with Don’t Breathe (the label’s highest grossing horror title ever at $89.1M Stateside), but this time the social platform has developed the first-ever interactive 3D Lens.

The lens, which became available today (December 29th), will be used to reach Snapchat’s 150M-plus daily users and allows Screen Gems to communicate directly with Snapchatters. The “Underworld 3D Lens” uses a smartphone’s gyroscope to build an immersive 360-degree Underworld-themed environment around the Snapchatter rather than the standard overlay to which users are accustomed. As the phone turns, the background adapts to the movement.

Fans will be able to “snap to unlock” and get a sneak peek via Snapcodes released prior to the launch, which begins on December 1. The custom Snapcodes will be incorporated and amplified through various social and content partners, TV, and marketing materials in the weeks leading up to Lens’ unveiling. An added bonus: the Lens transforms the user into a vampire much like Underworld‘s protagonist Selene, played by Kate Beckinsale.

Alongside series star Kate Beckinsale, Theo James (the Divergent series) returns in Underworld: Blood Wars as Selene’s ally David, reprising the role he played in Underworld: Awakening. British actors Tobias Menzies (“Outlander,” “Rome”) and Lara Pulver (“Sherlock”) take on the respective roles of a formidable new Lycan leader and a fiercely ambitious Vampire, and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) again plays Vampire elder Thomas.

Rounding out the film’s cast are James Faulkner (“Game of Thrones”), Peter Andersson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), newcomer Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James (A&E’s “Damien”), and Daisy Head (Fallen).

Anna Foerster directs. The screenplay for Underworld: Blood Wars was penned by Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter, Priest) and based on characters originally created by Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman, and Danny McBride.

Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg (The Lincoln Lawyer, Million Dollar Baby), Gary Lucchesi (Million Dollar Baby, Underworld), and Richard S. Wright (The Lincoln Lawyer, Underworld) are producing, as is David Kern (Underworld: Awakening) along with Len Wiseman (Underworld, Total Recall).

For more info visit the official Underworld Facebook page.

Synopsis:
Vampire death dealer Selene (Beckinsale) fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (James) and his father, Thomas (Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Bryan Bertino’s The Monster (reviews here and here) kicks no end of ass and could very well be the best horror film of the year. Think we’re lying? You’ll be able to find out for yourself soon enough!

From the Press Release:
Everyone’s worst fears about the evil that hides in the dark come to life in the nightmare-inducing horror film The Monster, arriving on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) and DVD January 24 from Lionsgate.

Somewhere deep in the dark woods lurks a bloodthirsty creature that targets an unsuspecting mother and daughter on a late-night road trip. Starring Primetime Emmy Award nominee Zoe Kazan (TV’s “Olivia Kitteridge”) and Teen Choice Award nominee Scott Speedman (Underworld franchise), the shocking and terrifying modern monster movie will have you “peeking through your fingers as the blood goes splat” (The New York Times). Theatrically released by A24, The Monster Blu-ray and DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $24.99 and $19.98, respectively.

Acclaimed horror filmmaker Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) wrote and directed this suspenseful and scary film, in which a divorced mother (Zoe Kazan) and her headstrong daughter must make an emergency late-night road trip to see the girl’s father. As they drive through deserted country roads on a stormy night, they suddenly have a startling collision that leaves them shaken but not seriously hurt. Their car, however, is dead, and as they try in vain to get help, they come to realize they are not alone on these desolate backroads — a terrifying evil is lurking in the surrounding woods, intent on never letting them leave.

The complete second season of “Fear the Walking Dead” is headed to Blu-ray and DVD, and we have a look at another of the set’s features. Dig it!

“Fear the Walking Dead” Season 2 Blu-ray/DVD Release Details:
AMC’s fan favorite chilling and tension-filled original series, “FEAR THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON” arrives on Blu-ray + Digital HD and DVD on December 13 from Anchor Bay Entertainment. “Fear the Walking Dead,” executive produced by showrunner Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, and David Alpert and starring Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Rubén Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia, Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris, and Colman Domingo as Strand, premiered its critically acclaimed second season on Sunday, April 10th, with the second half of the season debuting on Sunday, August 21st.

As Madison, Travis, Daniel, and their grieving families head for ports unknown, they will discover that the water may be no safer than land.

“FEAR THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON” introduces new cast members including Dougray Scott (“Heist,” Mission Impossible II), Arturo Del Puerto (Ride Along), Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Veronica Diaz (“Criminal Minds,” Blaze You Out), Danay Garcia (Supernatural), Carlos Segura (The Sale of Paradise), and Alfredo Herrera (Dios, Inc.).

Fiancé, The (2016)

thefianceStarring Carrie Keagan, Dallas Valdez, Douglas Tait

Directed by Mark Allen Michaels

Twisting up the usual, drab “Bigfoot running amok” premise and adding a little relationship strife is just what director Mark Allen Michaels planned on with his latest, The Fiancé, and at the risk of sounding too morose, I think this union is way past the point of reconciliation or progressive therapy.

The film stars Dallas Valdez as a very wealthy individual named Michael whose seedy undertakings with the Russian mafia have left him running out of greenbacks rather quickly. With the impending sawdust blowing out of his wallet, he decides to invite his lady friend (Keagan) up to a secluded cabin in the woods (oh shit, here we go again) in the hopes of successfully popping the question.

Unfortunately for him, she was attacked by a Sasquatch-like monster upon her arrival and starts to display some signs of unharnessed brutality. So, just as this poor bastard is dealing with the fact that he’ll soon be flat broke, he’s also got a wild woman for a bride-to-be. Now, fellas, I’m sure we all can agree that an untamed gal is the stuff of dreams, but this woman is now clearly off the chain; and with the addition of a documentary crew tailing the beast, we’ve got the makings of quite a mess. Well then, let’s get messy!

Flashbacks are the detriment to this production, as they have the tendency to slow the film to a crawl, but Michaels’ direction quickly jump-starts the movie back to life every time the need arises. The progression between horror and the idea of a man trying to save the life of his loved one slowly succumbing to animal instinct is both bizarre and intriguing, and aside from some otherwise goofy supporting performances, The Fiancé is one of those creature flicks that should arouse some interest from fans looking for a little bite with their romance… or failed romance, at that.

First Look at Sarah French in VHS-Shot Axe of Violence

It never ceases to amaze me how all things old become new again. Retro has been cool for a while now, but this latest film, Axe of Violence, which was shot on VHS(!), takes things to another level. Check it out!

From the Press Release:
Don’t bother checking your HDMI cable; no need to restart your streaming device because no amount of digital upscaling will get rid of the tracking issues of this horror…

Production recently began on the horror short AXE OF VIOLENCE, directed by aspiring trash filmmaker Matt Watts and his company Moribund Media. The movie was actually shot on VHS, not to capitalize on any recent retro-trends, but as a way to authentically connect with the late 80’s/early 90’s wave of independently produced horror movies.

AXE OF VIOLENCE stars scream queen Sarah French (Zombie Pirates, Shriek of the Sasquatch) and features practical gore effects and a distinctive SOV style. It is currently slated to be part of an anthology titled FATAL PREMONITIONS, which will appear next year, and may receive an excruciatingly limited standalone release prior.

Synopsis:
A group of friends take a shortcut though the backwoods on their way to a vacation cabin, but an unfortunate vehicle failure leaves them stranded on the roadside. But they are not as secluded as they think, as they are soon stalked by a masked killer…

All Through the House (2016)

all-through-the-house6-1Starring Ashley Mary Nunes, Jessica Cameron, Melynda Kiring

Directed by Todd Nunes

With a pair of garden shears as sharp as the day is long, and a not-so-jolly attitude to boot, dear ol’ Saint Nick comes a-slashing in Todd Nunes’ holiday chop-fest, All Through the House, and while this one won’t make you forget about some of the festive dicers of the past, it’s still a worthwhile watch that should sit nicely on your shelf… right next to that stupid looking elf.

With a premise as simple as the plans to a gingerbread house, and characters as bright as Rudolph’s honker (just kidding), the movie sets up like this: Rachael (Nunes) comes back into town after some time away to visit friends and her Grandma, and the ultra-merry next-door neighbor, Mrs. Garrett, takes no time in asking her if she’d mind assisting with her decorations. Now, Mrs. Garrett has always been regarded as kind of a neighborhood kook, but Rachael’s willing to let the season of giving ring true, aside from a glancing peek into the past, and gives in to help with the decorations.

You see, Mrs. Garrett’s daughter, Jamie, was kidnapped 15 years ago, adding to the elder lady’s mental fraying – this has all the tinsel and ornaments of some serious trouble, and the small town is soon to be on Santa’s naughty list, and he ain’t dishing out coal! While the movie rolls on, we see some reunions with old friends, a couple of surprises, and a whole lot of garden-tool destruction by the fat man in red.

Nunes’ obvious love and respect for the 80’s slasher-set comes through with his direction in this film, complete with nods to other yuletide killers of years ago, and at the risk of sounding too terribly complacent with simple slice and dice, I really dug it. Performances are admirable for a bloodletting such as this, and even industry femme fatale Jessica Cameron gets some screen time (although not as much as I’d hoped for), but it’s Kiring’s over-the-top portrayal as the demented Garrett that brought the movie full-circle for me. Ripe with ham-like dialogue in spots, her emotion comes off as innately creepy in parts and purposely laughable in others – a well-acted role, for sure.

Gorehounds: I haven’t left you off the list, that’s for sure – there’ll be slashings, slicings, gougings, impalings, and eviscerations abounding, and you’ll feel as if Santa heard your wishes when you sat on his lap and asked for some serious bodily trauma. Overall, this holiday-horror presentation is one that should be checked out when it’s under your tree, but more importantly, it should be used as a warning template to never piss off the big guy in the red suit… he’s always watching, and he apparently has a fondness for yard implements.

We’re just days away from the release of The Eyes of My Mother, which means a new clip has arrived.  It puts on quite a show – check it out, and stay tuned for more soon, including our review!

The Eyes of My Mother, from writer/director Nicolas Pesce, is getting a limited theatrical and VOD release on December 2nd from Magnet Releasing. Kika Magalhães, Will Brill, Flora Diaz, Paul Nazak, Clara Wong, Diana Agostini, and Olivia Bond star.

Synopsis:
In their secluded farmhouse, a mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of Francisca’s family life, deeply traumatizing the young girl, but also awakening unique curiosities. Though she clings to her increasingly reticent father, Francisca’s loneliness and scarred nature converge years later when her longing to connect with the world around her takes on a dark form.

Shot in crisp black and white, the haunting visual compositions evoke its protagonist’s isolation and illuminate her deeply unbalanced worldview. Genre-inflected, but so strikingly unique as to defy categorization, writer/director Nicolas Pesce’s feature debut allows only an elliptical presence in Francisca’s world, guiding our imaginations to follow her into peculiar, secret places.

Anne Rice Dishes on The Vampire Chronicles TV Show; Talks Possible Casting Choices

$

We were pretty excited by the news a few days ago that Anne Rice and her son, Christopher, are now in full control of The Vampire Chronicles with a TV series on the way; and today we learned a few more details courtesy of EW.

As for where they are in the process, Rice says, “We’re in the planning stage right now. Emails are flying back and forth with all our different ideas about how we want to do it. Nothing is firm yet, except that we do want to start with the second book in the series, The Vampire Lestat. We want to start with him and his birth as a vampire and go on from there. And at this point, tentatively, I see two seasons, maybe, to do the entire book.”

But don’t think for a second that they’ll stop there. The author explains, “…we want to do an open-ended series that can just take it all the way. And you know, there are something like 14 books now, and ideally, we would love to bring [the series] up to the present time, to Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis or whatever book is next after that.”

And how closely do they plan on following the text? “I want to do it faithfully…” Rice says, which is sure to be music to the ears of her millions of fans following the debacle known as Queen of the Damned. “I want to take that approach all the way, and if I make innovations and changes, which inevitably I will, I want them to be completely in tune with the vision and the ambience of The Vampire Chronicles. I want to give them the situations they expect to see and the characters that they expect to see. Again, I think TV is the ideal place for that.”

Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles

Is she hoping for a Netflix-type scenario, where the whole season might be released at once? Rice enthuses, “I would love that. I think that is one of the greatest innovations we’ve seen in the last few years: The idea of putting out an entire season at once. Most of us were already marathoning everything, so to have it upfront is incredible.”

With regard to casting – something the series has definitely had a mixed history with (I’m looking at you, Antonio Banderas), Rice reassures us, “We hope to be involved at every stage! I want to launch this in a way that my son, Christopher, is the executive producer at the helm of it and I’m sort of assisting him. He’s got the youth and the stamina and the vigor to actually take the leading role in this. At my age, I would rather assist him than be totally in charge, but yes, I think we would have a great deal to do with casting. We do not really want to let this out of our hands until we find the people that are most sympathetic to our vision for it.”

Will we see “name” actors or mostly unknowns? Probably a bit of both, according to Rice: “This is an age in which fantasy film and fantasy TV have done so well… there are all kinds of actors – in Australia, in England, and in America, and coming from other countries as well – that can play these kinds of characters and can do period very, very effectively. And they can do the kind of diction that you need when you’re dealing with 18th century characters. I don’t think there will be any trouble finding an actor, at this point. Maybe it will be an unknown, maybe it will be somebody that’s already working and I just haven’t seen him yet. I honestly don’t know. Again, I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. [But] you have to have someone who can pull off playing an immortal. If he’s supposed to be 200 years old or 1,000 years old, there has to be a subtle authenticity to that idea.”

Rice then proceeds to lay out a few of her choices. Regarding Lestat, while she does feel that “Tom Cruise did a wonderful job,” she adds, “I think with this character it’s very important that the actor look like the character. Because this character’s looks are so much a part of who he is: He’s six feet tall, he has blonde hair and blue eyes, and he’s known for those particular traits. So it would be very nice to have an actor that truly does fit that profile. And after that, I think it’s a matter of a character with a wild sense of humor, maybe an impish quality to him, and then athletic grace and strength.”

For Louis, whoever fills Brad Pitt’s shoes needs to have: “Beauty. Great beauty. It’s Louis’ beauty that attracted Lestat to him, and I would hope it would be a beautiful actor like Matt Bomer. Somebody with that incredible beauty. Brad Pitt did a beautiful job in the original film, and he set the bar very high when it comes to physical beauty.”

Next she touches on Marius, someone given short shrift in Queen of the Damned as portrayed by Vincent Perez. Her pick is someone the People of the Page, as her Facebook fans are called, are well aware of as one of her faves: “I would absolutely love it if Matthew Macfadyen (pictured below), the British actor, ever wanted to be part of this and wanted to play Marius. Marius is one of the pillars of the Chronicles – 2,000 years old – and I am an absolute, stoned fan of Matthew Macfadyen in ‘Ripper Street’ and every other show that he’s ever done. Talk about quality TV…”

We’ll be attending Rice’s signing for her new book, Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis (review), in San Diego next month and hope to have a chance to chat with both her and Christopher to learn more so stay tuned!  You can also chime in on the newly launched official The Vampire Chronicles Facebook page devoted to conversations about the forthcoming series.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been doing an incredible job as one of “The Walking Dead’s” most memorable villains, Negan; and though it should come as no surprise to fans who are caught up with the comics, he won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

Howard Stern caught up with Morgan for an interview, and the actor had the following to say about his character and Season 8…

I know I will be on board for Season Eight,” and “We’ve finished [Season Seven] a week ago. The next two [episodes], I’m really big in. I’m fucking heavy in those.

SlugsStarring Michael Garfield, Kim Terry, Philip MacHale

Directed by Juan Piquer Simon (as J.P. Simon)

Distributed by Arrow Video

Most creature features can be accepted at face value because, more often than not, filmmakers use animal antagonists that are physically imposing to some degree. The real test of a filmmaker’s ability to wring horror out of an animal attack is when the focus is on some little beast that doesn’t even begin to inspire terror. Enter director Juan Piquer Simon (directing here as J.P. Simon) and his ‘80s splatter effort, Slugs (1988), a mostly-forgotten low-budget romp through the radioactive swamp, featuring a horde of slimy slugs with a taste for flesh. After watching the film – for the first time – I was almost amazed there isn’t a greater cult following for the title since it has a ton of awesomely ‘80s gore gags and the FX work is often fairly impressive. So why has horror history overlooked this little gem? If I had to guess, it’s because the best acting comes from the titular creatures and there isn’t a single human in the bunch that doesn’t look like Simon just picked him off the street, handed him a script and, with no prep, said “Here… act!”

After a dreadfully shot opening, in which a guy in a boat falls out for absolutely no reason and then quickly dies, the film cuts over to the town drunk, stumbling down the street. Narrowly avoiding being hit by a car and killed, our old drunk reconsiders his life choices and decides to do something charitable for the townsfolk. Nah, jk. He gets home, pulls out a bottle of rotgut, berates his dog and then lays down to pass out… at which point slugs rain down from his ceiling and, apparently, consume him in record time. Later, a man puts on his work gloves and is bitten by a slug within. His reaction? Grab an axe and chop off the hand. Good lord, man. This is in addition to flailing around within his greenhouse, destroying everything in his path, before finally causing an explosion that also kills his wife. Logic in this universe has been thrown out the window, out of our atmosphere and flung into an orbit somewhere past Pluto.

The only man with any sort of insight here is Mike (Michael Garfield), a health inspector who is the only person that has noticed the town’s slug population seems to have doubled in more ways than one. So now they’re absolutely HUGE… I guess if you compare them to another slug or a snail. I doubt anyone would notice, even if you stuck in right in their face. Which the film does – literally. A dude eats a “slug salad” – inadvertently – and later on, while he’s out enjoying a fancy feast with some friends, the squirmy suckers come pouring out of his face in the film’s most fabulously grotesque sequence. Anyway, Mike figures out the slugs have been mutated due to some radioactive waste dumping nearby, so he and a buddy-that-is-sure-to-die go off to investigate, come up with some inane plan that “just might work!” and destroy all but one of the slugs that will inevitably be shown just before the credits roll. You knew it was coming.

Credit for the film’s awesomely gruesome special FX work goes to Basilio Cortijo and his crew. Cortijo, as very few of you may know, also did the FX work on Pieces (1982), the notoriously bloody grindhouse classic. Some of the work here was clearly done on the quick and it shows, but the majority of the gags are well-executed and just plain nasty. The effectiveness of the kill scenes nearly overshadows the fact that every person who dies in this film is an idiot because, you know, they’re essentially just sitting there as a slug slowly devours them. That’s how I envision it, at least, because most of these deaths are shown post-consumption. If anything, the deaths inject a strong sense of unintended comedy because lord knows the script is devoid of real humor.

I cannot overstate enough just how bad the acting is here. There isn’t a single line read with any sense of conviction in the entire script. The production originated in Spain, and partially shot there, but it also shot in Lyons, NY. Know what else famously shot there? Frank LaLoggia’s Lady in White (1988). It’s a beautiful location, adding plenty of production value. The cast is comprised of actors both American and Spanish, though the only distinction they share is a clear inability to act. There’s bad acting and then there’s real bad acting; as in the kind of bad acting that transcends humor and settles somewhere below a well-scraped barrel. Can you guess which one is used here?

Even with the lack of a single thespian in the bunch – which, frankly, no one should expect anyway – I still had a ton of fun with Slugs because the plot is so absurd and the FX work is so patently ‘80s it brought up some cool nostalgic feelings. There isn’t a credit on IMDb for composer and I suspect this is because the film made use of some library music and random synth cues. The score is all over the place in terms of tone – brooding and ominous one moment, something straight out of a TV drama the next. Similar pictures like Frogs (1972) or Empire of the Ants (1977) may have better acting but this one wins hands down for FX work and delivering on the promise of some really horrific animal attack action… even if it is nearly impossible to believe.

God bless Arrow because they are truly invested in giving each of their releases the royal treatment, whether they “deserve it” or not. Slugs features a stunning 1.85:1 1080p transfer that is so well done the movie could easily pass for a modern day low-budget horror entry. Fine detail and definition are highly impressive, especially if – like me – you go in with reasonably low expectations. Colors are defined and vibrant, print damage is almost nonexistent, the FX work holds up under the microscope of HD… all in all this is a killer effort.

Audio comes in the form of an English LPCM 1.0 mono track, which suitably does the job without any frills. The aforementioned score sounds as good as possible in such a narrow range. Dialogue is easy to understand and balanced, though the poor quality of some of the ADR is obvious at times. Subtitles are included in English SDH.

There are two audio commentary tracks included – the first with author Shaun Hutson (did I neglect to mention this film is based on a novel?); the second with Chris Alexander.

“Here’s Slugs in your Eye” is an interview with Emilio Linder, one of the film’s actors. In Spanish with English subs.

“They Slime, They Ooze, They Kill” features Carlo de Marchis, one of the special effects supervisors. In Spanish with English subs.

“Invasion U.S.A.” is an interview with art director Gonzalo Gonzalo, also in Spanish with English subs.

“The Lyons Den” is a piece with production manager Larry Ann Evans, who takes viewers on a tour of the museum in Lyons which has a little section devoted to this film.

There is also a trailer included.

Brad Peyton Talks Rampage Adaptation!

The upcoming video game adaptation Rampage starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be crushing its way to theaters on April 20, 2018, but recently We Got This Covered sat down with director Brad Peyton (San Andreas) for a glimpse of what to expect.

With Rampage, we are using our love of the original game as our inspiration,” Peyton tells the site. “Then we’re going to build a movie, like San Andreas, that is really going to surprise people in what it delivers. It’s going to be a lot more emotional, a lot scarier and a lot more real than you’d expect. So you look at that original concept about a lab that affects these animals and makes them rampage, and that’s the nugget. If they called me tomorrow to do Call of Duty, I wouldn’t want to play any of the Call of Duty games. I’d have to come up with something that deserves to be its own thing. That’s where a lot of these movies can go wrong.

In the Rampage series, people are turned into giant monsters after consuming a new drink product, who then proceed to destroy everything in sight. The roster included a giant ape and a giant lizard in clear references to cinema’s two most famous beasts.
