Director Brad Peyton Talks Incarnate

Could it be… SATAN?! Yes, there’s another possession and exorcism movie headed your way. But this one’s different. We cross our hearts and hope to die! What makes it different? Well, read on and find out, direct from the director of Incarnate, Brad Peyton.

Dread Central: You’ve done some pretty big movies – San Andreas with The Rock, and TV series, kids’ films… but not horror. Doing a movie like this for Blumhouse is something different for you, so tell us how it all came about.

Brad Peyton: It first initially came out of a meeting with Jason [Blum]. Jason and I have known each other for a number of years, I like him, he’s a really great guy, a really great producer; and we just talked about doing something but it took a long time to find the right thing. So one day he sent me this script and I really enjoyed it. Ronnie Christensen is a really good writer, there was just something about this that I thought, although it was definitely horror, it had science fiction elements, it had almost like a supernatural thriller element to it, but I would say the number one thing that drew me to it was the fact that it was just an incredibly unique spin on an exorcism movie. It was unlike any exorcism movie I’d ever seen or heard of, the fact that it wasn’t faith-based, it wasn’t about a priest doing an exorcism, this exorcist was a science and technology-driven guy and he had discovered a way to go into the subconscious of the possessed guy to pull out the demon.  I just thought this is an incredibly rich, original concept and the character that Aaron Eckhart plays was super interesting, the world was interesting so there was a lot there to play with and that world and that kind of anti-hero, it just kind of drew me in. I’ve always wanted to do a horror film, the very first short I ever did was a horror comedy called Evelyn, and it’s been a long time since I’ve really thought about this. I was up for some new challenges and obviously a new genre brings new challenges so I took the plunge.

DC: Aaron Eckhart is a great actor. He really commands every scene he’s in. You’ve directed him, so… What is about him that makes him so good?

BP: Aaron is one of those type of actors who is all in. He completely dedicates himself to his craft, his character. We had a really great rehearsal, he learned how to use a wheelchair incredibly proficiently, he’s send me pictures and prep where he was out in crowds where you didn’t even recognize him as Aaron Eckhart. It was very rewarding to see someone who can put themselves inside a character so deeply that everything they do has truth to it and he is the highest caliber of actor. One of the things that was very important to me that you see in a lot of horror films was you just see bad acting, you see through it and whenever you see dishonesty in movies, it takes me out so I really wanted to build a cast that made you believe the emotions and the complexities and twists and turns of the story through them and Aaron was the tip of the iceberg, the whole cast from top to bottom really brought it and I think that’s largely due to the tone that Aaron set. He was so invested, his nuances were so smart, he was fully in so as a director you want nothing more from your number one on the call sheet to be that guy, that most invested actor on that set and that’s who Aaron really was.

DC: Child actors can be hit or miss. What was the casting and selection process like for David Mazouz?

BP: Basically, you briefly meet him pre being possessed and then the way the story works is that you get a glimpse of what’s going on and then you enter the story through Aaron’s point of view. You get a glimpse of what happens to this boy, then you find Aaron on a mission, basically trying to avenge the death of his family at the hands of a demon. So you meet him on a mission trying to take down that demon and that mission leads him to this little boy. What was really interesting with David was you’re trying to measure in moments, he comes and goes, is he possessed, is it working, is he actually speaking to the real boy. David was interesting because to be honest, he startled everybody in how good he was. He is super clear and very confident and acting comes incredibly naturally to him. I’ve experienced this a little bit with Josh Hutcherson in the Journey movies where it’s just effortless, it’s just what they’re here to do. David is a total natural actor and I remember the very first set up with him and he was so good, I just looked over at Aaron and he gave me a look like ‘oh boy, this kid’s really good’, and he was, he’s fantastic in the movie and directing him was so easy because he gets it, he’s smart and he’s instinctual and with that type of actor you can keep it very simple and they can extrapolate so much from that direction, that little movement out of a scene and David is incredibly good at it, it’s not surprising how much he’s working now and being on a big show like Gotham because the kid is just an incredible talent.

DC: There are only a few demonic horror movies that don’t feature a priest against the devil – like Rosemary’s Baby or The Omen – so what would you say might have been some influences on you prior to directing a possession movie of you own?

BP: Look, I think the horror films I love are films that are really good films as well as good horror film, obviously like The Exorcist, but The Shining to me is one of the best horror films ever made. As a kid I loved Suspiria, I loved Dario Argento when I was a lot younger, but my favorite horror films veer into science fiction as well. I think Alien is a fantastic horror film even though people consider it science fiction. When I go to direct a movie I actually don’t really watch other movies, I just try to not be influenced by anything. I literally try and stay as far away from other movies as I possibly can because I’ve seen so many movies, I know I’m going to be influenced so I cautiously try and steer clear of everything while I’m working, just sit down and draw the story boards and think about the scenes and how I would do them. But for me, besides The Exorcist and Inception, because the concept of going inside of dreams, those are the obvious two influences for this movie which are fantastic, and putting those two movies together is a fascinating concept in itself. The other big influence for me was Blade Runner and I know it sounds strange but think about it like this. When I came onto the project, the script was in the early stages and I came up with this idea that, what if he was called an Incarnate, so when a priest and all of these other people that he’d go to for an exorcism failed, there’s a subculture of people called Incarnate and Aaron is one of those guys, in the exact same way that, if you’re looking for an android in a city in the future and you go to a detective and the detective fails, you go find a Blade Runner and that inspiration sparked me to like oh, this is a cool world, I can build up this type of person, they talk like you’re an Incarnate. In the movie you meet Aaron’s mentor, who’s an older Incarnate, who sells his ability to the highest bidder and lives quite wealthy and Aaron is the opposite, he doesn’t want to sell his ability, he just wants to find the demon who murdered his family. So you have juxtaposition, even in this subculture community of how Incarnates operate and so besides The Exorcist and Inception, Blade Runner was creatively the nugget that came from my interest in science fiction and what I liked about that was I wasn’t being influenced by another horror film, it was bringing something from another genre, another passion of mine, into the horror of space and if I’m going to reference something, I’d much prefer to reference photographs or paintings or other genres rather than going to the normal genre tropes.

DC: How closely did you work with the writer on the script, and did you make any changes?

BP: The script was quite strong when I read it, I don’t want to take any credit away from Ronnie because he’s a very, very good writer, but there were a couple bigger ideas I infused, like the one where an actual job was titled an ‘Incarnate.’ Listen, everything I do, I’m the type of director that works incredibly closely with the writers. I re-write all my own action, it’s just how I work I draw by action, I storyboard everything so it’s just part of the process for me to draw it instinctually, free myself from the page and then go back and re-write it and my best experiences have been with writers who are not precious in that way and know it’s a collaborative thing and Ronnie was exactly that. We would get inside there and test out lines, I’d do the same thing in rehearsal with Aaron, testing out lines of dialogue so filmmaking is very much a collaborative experience for me, it’s an all hands on deck type of job anyway so for me and the writing process, I try to give everything I work on all the creative juices I have and part of that is really trying to elevate the script to get all the best ideas I can in there.

Yes, Alien: Covenant has us much excited, but so does the prospect of finally giving the character of Ripley the send-off that she deserves. That’s what director Neill Blomkamp has in mind for his direct sequel to Aliens, which has been put on indefinite hold until Ridley Scott finishes his Prometheus trilogy.

Star Sigourney Weaver still has high hopes for Blomkamp’s take, and she took to Variety to give fans the latest.

I hope that Neill Blomkamp and I will eventually get back to it. He’s written such a wonderful script. I look forward to finishing Ripley’s story.

Not much is known about Blomkamp’s film other than Weaver would be returning along with Michael Biehn to reprise their roles as Ellen Ripley and Corporal Dwayne Hicks.

Stay tuned and keep the faith.

Bloodstained Butterfly, The (Blu-ray/DVD)

Bloodstained Butterfly, The (1971)Starring Helmut Berger, Giancarlo Sbragia, Ida Galli

Directed by Duccio Tessari

Distributed by Arrow Video

The giallo. A genre of film as notable for Gothic style, black-gloved killers, and arterial spraying as it is for red herrings, confusing plotlines, and multiple misidentified characters. Nearly all gialli adhere to this “formula” but a few notable titles have stuck a leg outside the box and tried to do things a bit different. Director Duccio Tessari’s The Bloodstained Butterfly (1971) is a prominent example, placing less focus on the acts of a faceless killer and devoting more screen time to the trial of a man implicated in the opening murder. It is a novel approach, turning a genre traditionally focused on slashing into a veritable courtroom drama, eschewing much of what horror fans have come to expect from these Italian thrillers. Does it work? Sort of. There are some brilliant moments of scripting, including a fantastic denouement, but for most of the run time the “action” moves at a pace comparable to freezing molasses.

On a sunny day in the park, a young woman is brutally murdered, her lifeless body rolling down a steep embankment to the horror of onlookers while her killer makes a mad dash out of the public eye. The cops are on the case immediately and in no time at all they have a suspect, Alessandro Marchi (Giancarlo Sbragia). He’s a local sports commentator who appears to be buried under an avalanche of evidence – his prints are on the murder weapon, the victim’s clothing has traces of his car seat fabric on it, and his trenchcoat contains chemical compounds found (apparently) only in the dirt in that particular park. He also has a personal connection to the victim: she was a friend of his daughter, Sarah (Wendy D’Olive). It would seem his goose is cooked. That is, until similar murders continue to occur, leading police to wonder whether or not they have the right guy after all.

Alessandro continues to fight his case, led by Giulio (Gunther Stoll), his attorney who is both having an affair with his wife AND trying to hook up with his daughter, Sarah. It would be acceptable to say the guy is a scumbag but, then, you already know he’s a lawyer. At least Giulio is a good lawyer because his saving grace for Marchi hinges on the alibi of a mistress whom Marchi was seeing that day, though the story of his affair that afternoon may be questionable. That combined with the copycat murder makes for a strong case to see him released. Sarah, meanwhile, passes the time with her new friend, Giorgio (Helmut Berger), a former flame that may be hiding something in his fractured mind.

The best compliment I can give The Bloodstained Butterfly is it keeps the audience guessing right up to the big climactic reveal. There are a number of twists and turns – perhaps a few too many at that – and when you lump that in with the already confounding nature of giallo films it at least makes for some serious head scratching. The picture makes it almost too obvious that Alessandro isn’t the killer; how often is it that the actual murderer is apprehended right off the bat? Or maybe this time the cops did get their man? A number of players, both shady and seemingly clean, are introduced as well and as any giallo aficionado knows the motivation for every killer is often withheld until the eleventh hour – and this film does not make it easy to deduce who might have a bone to pick.

So, outside of a unique approach to the story what is there to keep the events interested? Not a whole lot. The murders are sporadic and uneventful; the film’s focus is toward procedure and not the glorification of violence. Those expecting to see cascading crimson waves of blood will be sorely disappointed. This is a more sophisticated effort for the genre and it makes a few bold decisions to clearly inform viewers this won’t be another Argento or Fulci or Bava imitator. Whether or not it has succeeded is up to the viewer. For me, the pace was too languid, the plotline too obfuscated for fear of revealing salient points, and the kills were rote. But I will say that once we finally arrive at the climax, and all is revealed, I did find my interest piquing as the story suddenly got that much more interesting. This isn’t a film for casual giallo fans or those who need an introduction to the genre, but longtime lovers of those pulpy pictures might find some value in this alternate view.

Arrow touts a “new 4K restoration” for the film’s 2.35:1 1080p image, though the results here aren’t quite as spectacular as some of their recent work like Microwave Massacre (1983) or Slugs (1988). The best way I can describe the picture here is “cleaned up ‘70s”, with a healthy amount of film grain and a vintage aesthetic present while still making it obvious this is an HD image. Dirt and debris are eliminated. Clarity is very strong, often stunning when the lighting is just right. Colors looked a little dull and lacking saturation to my eyes, and there is very little effort made to give this film any sort of exciting visual palette.

Viewers can choose to watch the film with either the original Italian audio or an English dub track, both of which are presented via LPCM 1.0 mono. I went with the dub since I find a fun, nostalgic quality in listening to them. The quality is great, with excellent levels, a nice balance of dialogue, sound effects, and music –speaking of which, the score by composer Gianni Ferrio is typical of early ‘70s Italian productions, jazzy and orchestral. Subtitles are available in English.

Helmut Berger provides an optional introduction to the film. He’s a weird dude.

There is an audio commentary track with Alan Jones and Kim Newman, if you’re looking to get schooled.

“Murder in B-Flat Minor” is a visual essay by author Troy Howarth. If you’re into these sorts of pieces, this is a fast-paced, highly informative offering.

“A Butterfly Named Evelyn” is a lengthy interview with actress Ida Galli, focusing on her career in film.

“Me and Duccio” is a sit down with Lorella de Luca, actress and wife of the film’s director.

“Mad Dog Helmut” is an interview with Helmut Berger, former teen heartthrob.

Also included is a promotional image gallery, Italian and English trailers, a DVD copy, booklet containing essays and technical information on the a/v quality, and reversible cover art.

Special Features:

  • Brand new 4K restoration of the film from the original camera negative
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations

Escape from New York Reboot Details Emerge

Want to know what’s in store for us when the Escape From New York reboot from “Luther” creator Neal Cross arrives?  We have a few details (and spoilers) below.

Cross will be writing the film, which Fox plans to position Planet of the Apes-style (i.e., it will be the first in a new series).  The Wrap has uncovered a myriad of plot details.  For instance, it will be going back to Plissken’s roots and act as a prequel to the events that transpired in John Carpenter’s original film.

DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT ANYTHING SPOILED FOR YOU!
Here are 10 things we know so far:

1. Snake Plissken’s real name.

Plissken in the previous two Escape films didn’t have a name, but now he does: He’s Colonel Robert “Snake” Plissken.

2. Our bad guy won’t be the Duke of New York.

Instead, he’s the lean, intensely charismatic Thomas Newton, the playboy heir to an agrochemical and biotech corporation. Five years ago he decided to donate his entire fortune. Sounds like a good guy, right? He’s not.

3. The role originated by Lee Van Cleef will now be played by a woman.

The film will introduce us to CIA Deputy Executive Director Roberta Hauk.

4. New York City isn’t a maximum security prison.

Weird, right? Because New York being a prison was kind of crucial to the whole “escape from New York” concept. In the reboot, New York is breathtakingly lovely. Manhattan is the island we know, but with more towering glass structures and a high, undulating glass wall. The sky is alive with drones as serene as bees and artificial intelligence controls all in the form of an ethnically ambiguous, cheery young woman called April. A small staff of technicians and researchers known as “Seers” monitor all.

5. The remake doesn’t start in New York City.

The original “Escape” film deleted the opening scene that showed how Snake Plissken was apprehended. The new version won’t. It’s set in another major city, one not in the United States.

6. The film imagines a world in chaos.

Globally, one in every seventy-five human beings is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking asylum.

7. A hurricane is coming.

It’s called Superstorm Ellery.

8. April’s security won’t be as good as everyone hoped.

That will make the whole city vulnerable.

9. Snake has only eleven hours to complete his mission.

In the original film, he had 22 hours. Plissken’s mission is to bring in Newton alive.

10. Newton has a failsafe.

It’s a mysterious device called Fat Boy — an ominous, dull metal sphere about the size of a car, in a nest of conduits and cabling.

Horror Comes Home with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s Live-Action Trailer

Capcom have outdone themselves this time. As part of their no holds barred marketing campaign for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, they’ve released a live-action trailer for the upcoming title on the series’ Twitter account. And while it doesn’t say a whole lot about the game itself, you still gotta admire the creative lengths that they’re willing to go to help get the word out there. I guess if they put nearly as much effort into actually making their games as they did into marketing them, Street Fighter V wouldn’t have been released with such an abundant lack of content.

Anyway, get ready for a AAA horror experience when Resident Evil 7 arrives on January 24, 2017.

Game Awards 2016: Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo del Toro Join the Cast of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding

We still know very little about Hideo Kojima’s upcoming game Death Stranding, although a new trailer showcased at the game awards confirmed that both Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo del Toro will be starring in the project alongside the already confirmed Norman Reedus.

Just please, don’t ask what it’s about. I kind of got the impression from the trailer that it’s something to do with the supernatural mixed into a post-apocalypic setting, but knowing Kojima, anything’s possible. This is the guy who made the cardboard box a staple of gaming, so whatever he does is bound to be extraordinary.

Sony Interactive Entertainment will publish Death Stranding on PS4, although there’s no current release window.

Revealed live on stage at The Game Awards tonight, this clip introduces newcomer Javier. We witness how the beginning of the zombie plague affected him and his family before we move forward in time to years later, where he encounters a very familiar face….

The first TWO of five episodes in The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series – A New Frontier will premiere digitally worldwide starting Tuesday December 20th on PC from the Telltale Online Store, Steam, and other digital distribution services, on the Xbox Games Store for Xbox One®, and on the PlayStation®Network for PlayStation 4. Release dates for additional platforms will be announced in the near future.

Beginning February 14th, the series will also be available for purchase on a special ‘Season Pass Disc’ for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, which will include the premiere episode for the third season, as well as access to all subsequent episodes in the five episode season for download as they become available.

When family is all you have left… how far will you go to protect it? Years after society was ripped apart by undead hands, pockets of civilization emerge from the chaos. But at what cost? Can the living be trusted on this new frontier? As Javier, a young man determined to protect his family, you meet a young girl who has experienced her own unimaginable loss. Her name is Clementine, and your fates are bound together in a story where every choice you make could be your last.

Also confirmed today, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier will act as both a new beginning for players fresh to the series and unfamiliar with Clementine, as well as a continuation for players who have experienced Seasons One and Two. Players new to the series will be able to start a story that is tailored to this new beginning. Players continuing onward from prior seasons will have multiple options for quickly configuring their tailored backstory, or importing past save files from various platforms. Additional information on this feature will be detailed in the coming week.

Bethesda got in one some of the Game Awards action with an extended look at their beautiful sci-fi horror title Prey.

Developed by Dishonored veterans Arkane Studios, Prey looks like it will probably be Bethesda’s biggest release of 2017, seeing as we’re unlikely to be getting a new Fallout or Elder Scrolls title anytime soon. Especially when you take into account just how damn brilliant both the Dishonored games were.

Take a tour of the Talos I with the eight minutes of gameplay showcased below.

Prey – 8 Minutes of Gameplay:
Powers. Tools. Weapons. Aliens. And a massive space station. In signature style, Arkane Studios’ sci-fi thriller blends simulation and narration, dropping you into a carefully crafted world, then setting you free to play as you want. Watch almost nine minutes of pure Prey gameplay, with some light narration from Creative Director Raphael Colantonio and Lead Designer Ricardo Bare.
