Mike Flanagan is carving out a hell of a career for himself as the Oculus and Ouija: Origin of Evil director will soon Inherit the Earth for Sony! Deadline is reporting that Flanagan will write and is attached to direct the project.

Flanagan is re-conceiving Inherit the Earth, loosely based on the spec development script by JT Petty for IDW’s Zombies vs. Robots comic, which centers around a young girl, the last survivor on earth, who is protected by a group of robots from a pack of zombies that are intelligent and evolved.

The project is being overseen at Sony by Jonathan Kadin, EVP of Production. Filmmaker Andrew Adamson departed the project nine months ago.

With Inherit the Earth Flanagan re-teams with Platinum Dunes, who produced Ouija 2. Along with Dave Alpert and Rick Jacobs at Circle of Confusion, Platinum Dunes has been on the project since its early stages of development. Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller are producing with Alpert and Jacobs as well as Ted Adams and Trevor Macy.

Vamp (Blu-ray)

VampStarring Chris Makepeace, Robert Rusler, Grace Jones, Gedde Watanabe

Directed by Richard Wenk

Distributed by Arrow Video

Watching Vamp (1986), it’s hard to imagine it didn’t make some impression on Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino when it came time to script From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). Plot specifics aren’t quite so parallel, but the meat of both stories is “people go to a strip club and discover all of the employees are vampires who feast on their patrons”. I’m not suggesting RR & QT ripped their idea wholecloth from Vamp or anything, but to suggest it played a part in influencing the overall story doesn’t seem like too great a stretch. Vamp even has its own Satanico Pandemonium in the form of someone crazier than a fanged-out Salma Hayek: Grace Jones (side note: where the hell has she been for the past decade?). Instead of a couple crazy, tough guy brothers, though, we get an odd yet complementary comedic duo comprised of Robert Rusler and Chris Makepeace. The plot is thin and at times a bit aimless, but the word of the day here is “fun” and Vamp is nothing if not that.

Keith (Chris Makepeace) and AJ (Robert Rusler) are a couple of college kids looking to join a fraternity. As pledges, they’re nearly invisible and viewed as worthless, but when the brothers of their chosen house are looking to party the two best buds get a bright idea: strippers. They’ll be kings of the castle if they can show up to a frat party with some hot ass in tow, so they quickly strike a deal to essentially “buy” their way into the group despite having no connections whatsoever to any strippers. Keith and AJ enlist the aid of Duncan (Gedde Watanabe), a rich kid loner who happens to own a car, and the three head off into downtown in search of a seedy strip club.

They find one alright, run by a couple of sweaty Italians and highlighted by Queen Katrina (Grace Jones), who puts on a strip show that is more performance art than voluptuous visuals. Everyone in the club is drawn to her bizarre, primal dancing. The boys think she’s perfect. While Keith chills on the showroom floor, AJ decides to pay Katrina a visit in her dressing room, intent on recruitment. His plans go awry when she seduces him, biting into his neck and draining him dry. Keith, meanwhile, makes a new friend in Amaretto (Dedee Pfeiffer), one of those “stripper with a heart of gold” types. She and Keith finally track down AJ and find him – dead. The cops are called, and they actually show up, but by this time AJ has flipped to the fang side and he appears totally fine. A bit paler but same as ever. Unlike the rest of the bloodsuckers keeping Keith trapped, AJ sticks by his buddy, but with an army of the undead both inside and outside the club Keith and Amaretto don’t have many avenues for escape.

This film didn’t gain much traction in theaters, and at best it has attained a minor cult following since that release, but it fits in surprisingly well with most of the early ‘80s more popular pictures – specifically the output of John Hughes. The humor is just a couple notches below Hughes’ comedies, and the casting feels similar, too. It doesn’t hurt that Rusler co-starred in Weird Science (1985), one of Hughes’ most popular titles; or that Gedde Watanabe will be inexorably linked to Sixteen Candles (1984) in perpetuity. Rusler handles the in-your-face/sarcastic humor, while Chris Makepeace – he of My Bodyguard (1980) and Meatballs (1979) fame – is the amiable straight man. The interplay between the two is genuine and you get a nice sense of their camaraderie.

Grace Jones is a weird woman. She was Lady Gaga before there was Lady Gaga, well known for sporting outlandish outfits and oozing all sorts of intense, intimidating sexuality. Her strip tease in Vamp is pure Jones, her unique sense of eroticism and fashion on full display. She doesn’t say a single word for the entire run time which, given her penchant for visual assault above all else, seems fitting.

Vamp is a breezy ‘80s urban adventure that is easy to watch even if it isn’t entirely memorable. Vampire comedies have been done plenty, with this one falling somewhere in the middle. Rusler and Makepeace are an unlikely leading duo, but thanks to some screen charisma and chemistry they’re able to hold interest just as well as anyone else in those roles. There is a good amount of wheel spinning script-wise once the second act starts in, and I wouldn’t exactly say the picture finishes strong since the climax can be seen coming from space, but, again, in the pantheon of vampiric comedies this is a welcome entry that fans of neon-drenched ‘80s-era horror should dig.

The visuals look very good thanks to the film’s 1.85:1 1080p transfer. Arrow isn’t touting any new scan or restoration, so this is likely the existing HD master used on their previous edition, with some minor tweaking in the color department. Grain is largely consistent but there are some moments when it comes through thick. Colors are a bit drab, looking (fittingly?) drained at times, though the neon lights of downtown’s shadier spots do seem to pop nicely. Daylight scenes shine the brightest, with the best examples of fine detail and definition to be seen. The print used here is in excellent condition, with no signs of damage or dirt.

There isn’t much to crow about as far as the audio is concerned. An English LPCM 1.0 mono track carries all of the requisite noise – dialogue, sound effects, score, source music – none of which comes with any sort of deficiency. Dialogue is loud and clear, the effects have a good sense of weight to them, and music tracks register with strength. Subtitles are available in English SDH.

The new U.S. edition of Vamp includes a few new bonus features, though it also drops a handful of extras that were found on Arrow’s U.K. release, meaning you’ll have to hang on to your older copies if you want it all.

“One of Those Nights” is a lengthy making-of retrospective, featuring interviews with all of the main principals save for Jones, who is strangely absent. I mean, it’s not that unusual she’d opt out of something like this but it would’ve been nice to hear her thoughts after all this time.

A short reel of rehearsal footage is included, shot on camcorder.

“Dracula Bites the Big Apple” is a 1979 short film directed by Richard Wenk.

A blooper reel, TV spots, two trailers, and an image gallery are also included. First pressings include a booklet, featuring essays on the film and still photos.

Special Features:

  • High Definition digital transfer
  • Original mono audio
  • Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • One of those Nights: The Making of Vamp – a brand new documentary featuring interviews with director Richard Wenk, stars Robert Rusler, Dedee Pfeiffer, Gedde Watanabe

Yes, it’s hard to imagine dinosaurs had feathers, but it’s true. Need more proof? Check out this recently discovered fossil of a dinosaur’s feathered tail… which happens to be the Jurassic discovery of the year!

National Geographic reports via The Cell that the tail of a 99-million-year-old dinosaur, including bones, soft tissue, and even feathers, has been found preserved in amber.

CT scans and microscopic analysis of the sample revealed eight vertebrae from the middle or end of a long, thin tail that may have been originally made up of more than 25 vertebrae.

Based on the structure of the tail, researchers believe it belongs to a juvenile Coelurosaur, part of a group of theropod dinosaurs that includes everything from tyrannosaurs to modern birds.

Rabid (Blu-ray)

RabidStarring Marilyn Chambers, Frank Moore, Joe Silver, Howard Ryshpan

Directed by David Cronenberg

Distributed by Scream Factory

Is it just me or does anyone else feel a twinge of embarrassment when you have a favorite director, someone you fervently follow, yet you haven’t watched all of their films? Maybe it’s the OCD in me but if I am passionate about a director’s work then I want to see everything they have made. Who knows what little-seen gems are lurking in their back catalog? David Cronenberg has been one of my top must-see directors for a very long time yet recently, with the arrival of Scream Factory’s glorious new Blu-ray, I was forced to come to the realization that I had not seen Rabid (1977) – this despite owning a copy on DVD for the better part of a decade. Cronenberg is the king of body horror, and his early work is among his most celebrated (because it’s fucking awesome), so I have no legitimate excuse for snoozing on this one. Having now seen the film – in a stunning 2K remaster – that embarrassment is only compounded because, of course, it’s another early achievement in his long career. If there’s any silver lining, it’s that my delayed gratification made the eventual viewing that much sweeter being able to experience old Cronenberg like it was new again. It’s like being a fan of Metallica for twenty years but only now hearing “Ride the Lightning”.

On an otherwise idyllic afternoon, Hart (Frank Moore) and his girlfriend, Rose (Marilyn Chambers), are taking a motorcycle ride through the Canadian countryside when a stalled van causes them to crash in a nearby field. Hart receives minor wounds but Rose, pinned beneath the burning motorcycle, is badly injured. Both are taken to the Keloid Clinic, where Rose undergoes a radical new form of plastic surgery using skin grafts designed to adapt to surrounding tissue. She awakens from her coma a few days later, screaming in the night. Lloyd (Roger Periard), another patient, tries to calm her down but only winds up getting stuck with… something for his troubles. The next day Lloyd sees Dr. Keloid (Howard Ryshpan), who is perplexed to find the wound will not clot and Lloyd’s right side is numb. Dr. Keloid sends him off for further testing.

Rose may have survived the accident, but the surgery done by Dr. Keloid has caused a strange reaction within her body – she now craves and subsists on blood, the procurement of which comes from a red stinger that retracts into her armpit. Her nightly feedings see Rose attack anything with a pulse, man and beast alike. Unbeknownst to Rose is the aftermath of her assaults, with the newly infected persons exhibiting rabies-like behavior and viciously biting anyone nearby. After only a few days Rose has managed to cause a minor epidemic, serious enough for the Canadian authorities to bring in the military and public health officials. The only person who recognizes the one responsible and wants to help is Hart, but he’s having a hard time determining where Rose is since she left the hospital and has been hitchhiking her way to a major metropolitan area.

This was only Cronenberg’s second feature but, just as he displayed with his first, Shivers (1975), his thematic content and style were already firmly in place. Few filmmakers have captured not only the visualization of bodily horrors but the mental toll it takes on the person, too. Rose’s abnormality is an aberration of her person, a grotesque deformity that is both vital and revolting. Rose needs this phallic probe to sustain her life, even though it means she has to “kill” others to satisfy her craving for blood. There is no control over her needs, with her unwelcomed evolution taking the reins. Additionally, being Cronenberg, there is a ton of sexual subtext and Freudian undertones. Hell, at one point a character is holding up a book by Freud and discussing his work. And Rose’s underarm people poker isn’t exactly subtle… Despite the sexual subtext there is nothing sexy about what Rose does to people. Her method of quenching that hunger is disturbing and just plain gross, two things Cronenberg does well.

Credit is due to Marilyn Chambers, former adult actress who used this film as a hopeful springboard to a more mainstream career. Sissy Spacek was originally considered for the lead but she got shot down for a couple of possible reasons, one being her thick Texas accent. Knowing Spacek’s work during this time, and having seen Chambers in her most well known “legit” role, it is clear the producers made the right call. Spacek is too bookish, whereas Chambers just oozes sexuality and confidence. This is important for the character of Rose because she needs to be able to seduce (mostly) men very easily to allow her to feed. Chambers really sells the confusion, disgust, eroticism, and frustration required of the role. This is not Bad Porno 101 acting.

At present there are plans for the Soska Sisters to remake the film, with a possible TV series to follow. Remaking Cronenberg sounds like a fool’s errand – and it generally is – but of all his works I’d say Rabid is one of the few that could potentially benefit from an update. I say “potentially” because it would require a strong filmmaker with a fresh take on the material, giving it some valid reason for existing. I don’t think the Soskas are the right fit for that criterion – maybe they’ll prove me wrong? – but the vision I have in my head of what will likely be delivered can’t hold a candle to the mastered subtlety of Cronenberg. Rabid does feel like it’s spinning its wheels a bit during the second act (when Rose is simply continuing her feedings while important people try to figure this mess out – part of why I agree someone could improve upon the original) but through and through this is classic Cronenberg that all fans of his early works will eat right up.

For this release, Scream Factory commissioned a new 2K scan from the negative at David Cronenberg’s preferred aspect ratio of 1.66:1. Right away, it is apparent (even to a first-time viewer) that the 1080p image is newly minted and very clean. There are very few visible signs of damage and dirt, and the overall picture quality is rather impressive for a low-budget feature. That isn’t to say fine details are leaping off the screen, because there are still inherent limitations to the source, but there are many moments when the picture looks pristine. Colors and contrast and all that other fun stuff look just fine; even the film grain is smooth and doesn’t clump up much during darker scenes.

Enjoy all of music supervisor Ivan Reitman’s (yes, the only one) selections with an English DTS-HD MA 2.0 mono track that does little more than get the job done. To be fair, there isn’t a whole lot of score to this picture, with most of the work being done by dialogue. Speaking of which, the sound quality is a little shoddy at times, with some lines coming through a bit muffled. Again, likely a source issue that can’t be fixed. The track is narrow and limited in scope and ambition, though on a purely technical level, yes, it is totally fine and listeners won’t hear any major flaws. Subtitles are available in English.

There are three audio commentary tracks here – director David Cronenberg (always a must-listen); a new track with author Jill Nelson and Chambers’ personal appearance manager Ken Leict; and, film historian William Beard.

“Young and Rabid” – Actress Susan Roman, who plays Rose’s friend Mindy in the film, has quite a lot to say despite her smaller role.

“Interview with Director David Cronenberg” – This looks to have been shot sometime around 2001 or so, with Cronenberg discussing his legacy up to that point.

“Interview with Producer Ivan Reitman” – This is a newer interview, produced for Arrow, featuring the legendary comedy producer discussing his early days with Cronenberg and dealing with the Canadian film business.

“Interview with Co-Producer Don Carmody” – Again, this is a newer piece produced for Arrow, with another one of the film’s producers discussing the making of the film.

“From Stereo to Video” – Be sure to watch this piece that focuses exclusively on Cronenberg’s early days, beginning with his short films and wrapping up around “Videodrome” (1983).

A theatrical trailer, TV spot, radio spots, and a photo gallery are the remaining features found on the disc.

Special Features:

As if getting an A-lister like Michael Myers wasn’t enough, Dead by Daylight’s now getting an all new killer in the form of a grotesque female swamp creature known as the Hag. She’s available in the new Of Flesh and Mud DLC, which is available now.

You are cursed.
Of Flesh and Mud is the third Chapter for Dead by Daylight. Prepare for dark hexes and flesh made out of mud and decay, if you dare enter Backwater Swamp and live through the horror it brings. A new killer – The Hag – awaits you in the waterland area and you will meet a new survivor: Ace Visconti.

A hag driven to madness by being devoured alive piece by piece. A survivor that believes luck is always on his side. A wetland with scorched shacks, an eerie mud maze and a rusting boat graveyard lays ahead of you, so tread carefully.

Of Flesh and Mud is the brand new Chapter for Dead by Daylight and it includes a new Killer, a new Survivor and a map.

Haunted by The Hag
The unspeakable torment Lisa Sherwood endured twisted her mind and carved in the memory of pain in her bones. She had a choice, to flee or to turn on her tormentors. Her last deed drove her into darkness.

From Dust to Dust
Source of The Hag’s power, a blackened finger used as a catalyst to her terrible power: the Phantasm Traps. The Hag draws in the soil to set a trap for the survivors. When a survivor finds her trap, a lifelike illusion of the killer appears in front of them. Once the trap is triggered, The Hag has a choice. To enter the physical illusion when the survivors are within her reach or use it as a decoy to take down her unsuspecting prey before the phantasm collapses into pieces of dirt and mud.

Killer Perks
The Hag perks revolve around a new gameplay mechanic: the Hex totems. They are focused on cursing the survivors and sapping their abilities.

Ruin
An ominous hex that affects the survivors’ skills at repairing generators. Survivors affected by Ruin suffer the following in their desperate fight for survival: Good Skill checks results in regression on the generator. Great Skill checks do not grant bonus progression on the generator.

Devour Hope
A hex rooting its power on hope. The false hope of survivors ignites your hunger. When a survivor is rescued from a hook at least 24 meters away, Devour Hope receives a token. Tokens grant various abilities such as double damage and kill by your own hand.

The Third Seal
You will curse a survivor by hitting the victim while the Hex Totem is active. The hex reduces the effectiveness of the victim’s aura reading ability and make the survivor easy prey. But only one survivor can have this curse at a time. Once you hit another survivor, the Hex is transferred to your next victim.

Are you feeling lucky?
Ace Visconti is one charming guy. From his roots as a poor boy in Argentina, he gamed, scammed, seduced and smooth-talked his way to a life of luxury as a high roller in the land of opportunity. Money has always had a way of slipping through his fingers, but Ace simply figures he can always win more. Eventually he racked up too many debts with the wrong kind of people. But when they finally came to collect, Ace was nowhere to be found. No one knows where he has gone, but everyone agrees on one thing: He will survive… against all odds.

Luck favors the bold
Ace is one lucky bastard or at least he believes he is. Therefore, he’s always ready to take a chance.

Ace in the Hole
Lady Luck always seems to be throwing something good your way. When retrieving an item from a chest, there is a chance that an add-on of very rare rarity or lower attached to it.

Up the Ante
Your confidence strengthens the feeling of hope for those around you. For each other survivor still alive, grant bonus to luck to all remaining survivors.

Open-Handed
Luck is more than chance, it takes a bit of skill thrown in. You stay alert at all times. Strengthens potential in one’s aura reading ability and increases aura reading ranges.

A feast on human flesh
It wasn’t until the authorities decided to drain the waters around the ramshackle collection of huts that the true history of Backwater Swamp began to unravel. Thirty-seven sets of human remains weighted down in the rotten swamp waters was revealed. Bodies that showed traced of being cut in and their bones carefully scraped free of flesh. As for the family that hunted in these waters, nothing was ever found of them. The buildings where they once lived were burnt and scorched and everything was covered in black ashes. The rumor claims that they torched it all to cover up their deeds, before fleeing into the darkest reaches of the swamp, to one day begin their foul hunt again.

The wreck of The Pale Rose
The Pale Rose, an ancient paddle steamer in the middle of the swamp, held captive of the stagnant mud. It has been here long before the residents began their hunt, a barely visible silhouette from the nearby village. There are signs of inhabitation, particularly in the upper states room where strange, ritualistic markings in dried blood and dirt cover the floor. From the scale of the bloodletting, something horrid has taken place here.

“Whoever knows fear burns at the touch of R.L. Stine!” Back in October we reported that the Goosebumps author would be writing a comic for Marvel, which the New York Times has now confirmed will be a five-issue Man-Thing miniseries. German Peralta and Daniel Johnson will draw the interiors, whilst Tyler Crook will provide the covers.

Each issue will also feature a bonus short horror story written by Stine, and the series is inspired by the original Tales From the Crypt comics, of which he’s a big fan. He was offered a list of Marvel characters to write about and settled on Man-Thing because of his love of swamp creatures, which is evidenced by the fact that they show up regularly in the Goosebumps series.

Man-Thing first appeared in Savage Tales #1 in 1971 and was the star of his own R-rated film back in 2005. In Stine’s new series, he travels to California to discover why he has yet to be featured in a new movie, and for the first time he’ll possess the power of speech. We’ll hear what he has to say when #1 arrives in March.

The sixth and final season of NBC’s “Grimm” is kicking off in early January, and to make sure you’re keeping it on your radar (and DVR), the network has released the first promo teaser for the show’s return.

After five seasons, everything they’ve discovered has led to this… the final chapter of “Grimm” begins January 6th and will consist of 13 episodes.

About “Grimm” Season 6:
Now that the nefarious forces of Black Claw have been silenced, Nick (David Giuntoli) faces an all too familiar foe in Capt. Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz). Having gained a seat of power as the mayor elect of Portland, Renard is poised to bring rise to his own brand of law and order. Nick must take a stand to protect his city and those closest to him, especially his child with Adalind (Claire Coffee). It will take the full force of Nick and his allies to find a way to bring peace.

Meanwhile, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) grapple with bringing a child into a new and tumultuous world, and Eve (Bitsie Tulloch) faces unsettling identity issues as her former self lurks below the surface.

Titan’s Nightmare Before Christmas: Day 5 – Colorist Guilia Brusco on Bringing Hook Jaw to Life

Today we have another treat to share in our “Nightmare Before Christmas” series with Titan Comics: Colorist Guilia Brusco shares her process of bringing Hook Jaw to life in Issue #1 of the comic series, which goes on sale December 14th.

Brusco explains, “The first five pages of this story to me were mostly about communicating a sense of drama and to provide clear storytelling. Specifically, they were about introducing Hook Jaw’s dangerous presence bathed into murky darkness of the first two pages vs. the quest for knowledge and understanding of the oceanographers in the three pages that follow and more.”

“I set the latest series in daylight as per the script,” she continues, “but I deliberately chose a bright, nearly cheerful palette to highlight the positive value of the lot our heroine will stem from. This also works well to create a clear space/time demarcation. Later in the issue, and in future issues as the story unfolds, the atmosphere will likely become more muted and anguished. I sense lots of scarlet red coming.”

Of course for horror fans, red is our favorite color, so we’ll be all over this one when it comes out later this month! Check out a few sample pages of Brusco’s technique below along with the various covers that will be available, and look for our final “Nightmare” early next week!

Hook Jaw #1 (of 5) is written by Si Spurrier with art by Conor Boyle and colors by Guilia Brusco. Pre-orders are available now from TFAW.

Synopsis:
In the troubled waters off Somalia, a rag-tag group of marine scientists studying a pack of female great white sharks find themselves caught in a conflict between pirates and the might of the US Navy. But why is the CIA so interested in the work of the scientists? And just how will they face up to the shadowy terror of the legendary great white – HOOK JAW?!
