They’re Still Not Working for Santa: Vincent Guastini and 1989’s Elves

“A lot of what I was doing with the effects
was based on what Rick Baker did on Gremlins.”
-Vincent Guastini

Where on earth are you going to find a Christmas film that contains Santa Claus, Dan “Grizzly Adams” Haggerty, an evil elf, Neo-Nazis, subtle incest, chain smoking, and a ruthless mother who won’t think twice about draining her daughter’s savings account if she misbehaves? Well?

The answer, my friends, and the only answer is Jeffrey Mandel’s 1989 Christmas low budget creature film Elves. It’s a crazy little gem that I find myself re-visiting, with much joy, every holiday season.

Synopsis (from the VHS box art):
An innocent romp in the woods turns into a hellish nightmare when three young girls accidentally awaken an army of evil elves—genetically created by a Neo-Nazi mad scientist during World War II. These hideous creatures don’t work for Santa… they have a special mission: to mate with a virgin and take over the world as a pint-sized master race! Dan Haggerty stars as Mike McGavin, a department store Santa who must expose this unholy force and stop the gruesome terror before the elves destroy Christmas.

Of course one cannot have a film about elves (or, confusingly in this instance, just one elf) without an elf, and that’s where Vincent Guastini, owner and operator of V.G.P. Effects and Design, comes in.

If you’re a horror fan but aren’t familiar with Guastini’s name, you’re sure to be familiar with some of his work. In addition to Elves, Guastini worked special effects and special effects makeup on such films as Spookies (1986), Mindkiller (1987), Child’s Play 3 (1991), Virus (1999), Silent Night (2012), and V/H/S Viral (2014). Guastini also dabbled in television scares with his work as special effects makeup artist on several episodes of the fan favorite series “Monsters.”

Not a horror fan? Not a problem. He also spun his makeup magic, his effects expertise, on adventure-comedies like Dogma (1999) and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and the surreal drama Requiem for a Dream (2000).

Guastini and I got into the Christmas spirit and chatted about Elves in a recent phone interview. Below are the highlights from that conversation which, I’m sure, readers will get a St. Nick-chuckle out of. Also below are some fun behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Elves pulled directly from Guastini’s archive.

Happy Holidaze, everyone!

John Campopiano: So, Elves. Have you been aware of the fact that there’s actually a small cult following for this film?
Vincent Guastini: Well, I’ve got a friend, Mikey Rottela, who went to a screening of the film about a year ago in LA. I was working at the time and couldn’t go, but he kept saying to me, “Dude, you should go, they’re having a screening of Elves!” I just didn’t get why people enjoy that film. Now I get the appeal because it’s one of those movies it’s so bad it’s good. But I remember at the time when it came out and for a while afterward I was, to be frank with you, a little embarrassed that I had worked on it (laughs). The effects didn’t really come out the way we had planned. It’s like the effects were on the same levels of movies like Ghoulies, and at that point (early on in my career) I didn’t want to be known for doing those types of effects.

JC: How did you get involved with this production in the first place?
VG: At the time I had a friend, Patrick Denver—son of Bob Denver from “Gilligan’s Island”—and he lived in Colorado and was somewhat familiar with my work. (I had gone out to Colorado before Elves and worked on a feature called Mindkiller). This was back when I was first starting my career in the early ’80s.  That’s when I first met Patrick who was just getting into effects around that time, making somewhat crude latex masks and things like that for other local, Colorado companies. It was still early in his career, too. One of the companies he was working for, I believe, was called Windstar.

In those days Windstar was doing a lot of car commercials in Colorado, but they were also getting into making low budget feature films, primarily horror films, like Elves and alien films like Alien Seed with Erik Estrada. So, at that point Patrick went to the company and said, “I’ve got a friend in New Jersey with a shop and I’d really like him to design, construct, and ultimately build the elves for this movie you’re putting together.” He found a little money and came out to the East Coast where we started to build these elf puppets.

JC: So you were really the guy conceiving of these elf creatures and bringing them to live?
VG: I sculpted the main elf and had Ken Brilliant sculpt the bigger elf for the close-up shots. I figured that the filmmakers would want to do some close-up shots of the face and wanted to make sure the elf head could look as good as possible with full articulation and expression. I tried to be as ambitious as possible with the effects on this film. We then pieced the animatronics (done by a guy named Ken Walker) together at my shop in New Jersey and shipped that big, close-up hero elf head out to Colorado.

The main hero elf puppet that was used was actually the one I built. It was essentially half-rod, half-puppet and had cable controls. It’s the one you see mostly in the movie in conjunction with the close-ups of Ken Brilliant’s larger elf head. But, you know what, we had ALL of these other type of effects like dummies, other puppets, a radio controlled puppet, little insert heads and legs, etc. We did everything you’d do if you were shooting, for example, a low budget version of Gremlins. The one puppet they ended up using the most, unfortunately, was the one I made.

JC: Why was that unfortunate? I sense a story here…
VG: One of the cables in the lip of the elf head broke the night before it was supposed to be filmed. What happened was I was using a dremel to try and fix one of the cable mechanisms inside the face, but the dremel got stuck on the rubber and ripped the entire face off! I sat up all night trying to patch it back together. So, not only did I ruin the puppet but I also ruined the integrity of what the sculpture once looked like—and this was going to be one of our main puppets.

But I figured, “Well, I guess this will be OK. We have other puppets. This will be the sideline puppet and won’t be the main one. They can use it for quick shots.” I had patched the face good enough so that, if they did shoot it they wouldn’t be able to tell that it had been ripped apart by a drill (laughs). But, to my horror, when I finally got the movie back and saw it for the first time, my puppet was the primer puppet—the one that was most used. One of our crew members, Michael Rios, actually gave that puppet the nickname “Patches” because I had patched that face back together with latex after accidentally ripping it off. Patches ended up being the star of the movie!

JC: It must have been exciting for the cast and crew—and even the Colorado Springs locals—to have Dan Haggerty in town.
VG: Dan Haggerty was a big idol of mine because, when I was a kid, I used to watch “Grizzly Adams” all the time. He actually ended up befriending me on the film. I remember sitting in his car listening to music. But I wasn’t really the type of guy to get high, but I knew that Dan was very much into getting stoned, so we did smoke a little pot in his sports car and we listened to CDs and all that.

So, there was this one time—and this was the craziest thing I saw him do—when he came on set in the middle of the scene, he fell and a giant cloud burst out of his back pocket and enveloped him like a shield. It was like a forcefield in one of those fighting machines from War of the Worlds. It dissipated and ended up being a decent amount of coke.

It exploded all over the set! He looked like Santa in one of those snow globes. So, we all just sat there with our mouths wide open and thought, “Well, OK, Grizzly Adams is doing snow… for real.”

Dan Haggerty in Elves

JC: Speaking of snow, did you guys actually shoot in the wintertime? It looked like you guys were working in some frigid Colorado temperatures…
VG: I believe it was, yes, because I do remember it being cold. I’m in the film, actually! I appear in a scene with Michael Rios. There’s a part in the beginning of the film when Dan (Haggerty) is heading to the mall and there’s a small band of musicians playing music outside on the sidewalk, and that’s me and another crew member. It’s a small scene of us portraying one of those bands that play music for spare change around Christmas time. (I believe I was the one playing a tuba). It was our little cameo in Elves.

Author’s note: While conducting research on Vincent Guastini’s previous work, I discovered that he also worked on Blades, a tongue-in-cheek horror/comedy about a lawnmower running rampant and wreaking havoc on a New Jersey golf course. This Jaws-inspired homage was eventually picked up and distributed by Troma. If you must know more about Blades, check out my 2015 Dread Central interview with the film’s director, Thomas Rondinella.

Latest Vampyr Trailer Unleashes the Darkness Within

We still haven’t seen much in the way of gameplay from Dontknod’s Vampyr, although IGN revealed a new cinematic trailer titled ‘Darkness Within’ on their Youtube channel. which shows off the game’s eerie, 1918 London setting. We also get a better look a Jonathan E. Reid, the doctor-turned-vampire protagonist.

Whilst it doesn’t quite fit the bill for being a full-blown AAA title, Vampyr is still such a technologically advanced game that the developers initially had some trouble getting it to run on Xbox One hardware, finding it to be better suited for the more powerful PS4. It’s gonna hit both systems next year.

Sliver Scream Film Fest 2017 Moves to Texas and Teams with Alien Expo

Designed to honor legendary filmmakers, discover new talent, unite the entertainment community, and encourage genre conversation, the Silver Scream Film and Comic Festival is a three-day event that debuted this year in Santa Rosa, CA. However, due to some scheduling conflicts, in 2017 Silver Scream is moving to Dallas, and that’s not the only change…

The fest is also teaming up with Alien Expo, the newest extravaganza from the producers of Alien Con. It’s all taking place May 26-28, and here are the early details.

From the Press Release:
Silver Scream Film and Comic Festival will be taking its second year on vacation — to Texas.

Normally held in Santa Rosa, California, and originally scheduled for February, the Famous Monsters and Cosmic-Con event will instead run for three days at the Dallas Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center alongside Alien Expo, from the producers of Alien Con.

“Due to scheduling conflicts, we’ve decided to move the festival to Dallas,” said Philip Kim, Cosmic-Con producer and publisher of Famous Monsters. “Luckily, the large number of submissions will be better accommodated by Alien Expo, and holding the festival alongside a convention will increase the number of potential participants.”

Silver Scream is comprised of film screenings, award ceremonies, social gatherings, and celebratory parties. They feature and short length films, animations, screenplays, and comic book or graphic novel submissions.

The submission deadlines for Silver Scream will be extended two months to allow for local Dallas writers’ and filmmakers’ participation (find out more here), and future guest announcements will be made to coincide with convention events.

Silver Scream will return to Santa Rosa in 2018.

In The Fallen (Book 2 of Tarn Richardson’s The Darkest Hand Trilogy), war wages on in a shadowy world between demons and werewolves. It arrives early next year; and we’ll be taking part in the author’s virtual tour in support of it.

To help get you ready for Richardson’s “imaginative and deftly told tale that’ll chill you to the core” (author Tim Lebbon), we have the early details and cover art to share.

Stay tuned for more, including a giveaway closer to the novel’s February 21st release from The Overlook Press.  Don’t want to wait? You can pre-order The Fallen now, and don’t worry if you’re not up-to-speed:  Book 1, The Damned, is scheduled to hit paperback on February 7th so that Richardson’s fans and first-time readers alike can discover the depths of this premier horror series. The synopses of both follow.

The Damned:
In an alternative World War I, unspeakable creatures roam the grisly trenches, and a ruthless Catholic Inquisition holds sway ― still powerful, but working in the shadows.

When a Father is brutally murdered in the French city of Arras, Poldeck Tacit – a determined and unhinged Inquisitor – arrives on the scene to investigate the crime. His mission: to protect the Church from those who would seek to destroy it, no matter what the cost. As the Inquisitor strives in vain to establish the truth behind the murder and to uncover the motives of other Vatican servants seeking to undermine him, a beautiful and spirited woman, Sandrine, warns British solider Henry Frost of a mutual foe even more terrible lurking beneath the killing fields: an enemy that answers to no human force and wreaks its havoc by the light of the moon.

Faced with impossible odds and struggling with his own demons, Tacit must battle the forces of evil – and a church determined at all costs to achieve its aims – to reach the heart of dark conspiracy that seeks to engulf the world, plunging it even deeper into conflict.

The Fallen:
The ongoing battle of a paranormal World War I threatens to engulf the Inquisition as dark forces assemble amongst the most fanatical servants of the Catholic Church.

Before his murder, a desperate priest sends a secret missive to his brother serving in the Italian Army. Now this young soldier carries with him a letter which holds the key as to why terrible Satanic rituals are being committed in the heart of the Vatican – and by whom. Drawn into this conspiracy and hunted by agents of The Darkest Hand, old rivals must unite to discover the contents of the letter before it’s too late.

Only Poldek Tacit, an Inquisitor, can hope to push back the forces of evil and unite those for good. But what happens when Tacit finds that his mission threatens the very future of a world already on the edge of the abyss?

DVD and Blu-ray Releases: December 27, 2016

Now that everyone is recovering from the Christmas weekend, we’ve got 10 releases dropping! Our one discrepancy for the week is The Warning. It may have had a similar release back in August, and it is also showing up for this week for December 31st. Your guess is as good as mine in that regard.

We have two classics coming at us from the 1970s. The first is 1974’s The Beast and the Vixens on DVD. The second release, from 1970, is the Blu-ray for The House That Screamed.

Also hitting shelves this week are new Blu-rays for each of the four Underworld movies. If I were a betting man, I would imagine that this is being timed to coincide with the upcoming release of Underworld: Blood Wars, which will be coming to theaters on January 6th in the United States.

Keep checking back each week for the most up-to-date horror movie release list on the internet and beyond. As always, pleasant viewing.

NBC’s Hannibal Not Dead Yet?

0
0

Oh, please, 2016. You’ve taken away so much of everything we love. At least let this tiny glimmer of hope shine! During a recent episode of Blumhouse’s Shock Waves podcast, Bryan Fuller joined the gang and dropped this interesting tidbit on hopeful fans praying for a return of Mads Mikkelsen as “Hannibal.”

We still hope that something can be worked out where we continue telling Hannibal Lecter stories and see The Silence of the Lambs in a way that the book hasn’t been represented. I think the film adaptation is a perfect film, but there are a lot of interesting nooks and crannies to explore in a television series. I hope we get to tell the story. Ideally for the cast, it would be as a mini-series, here and there. Let’s do 6 to 8 episodes of that, and 6 to 8 episodes over here. And do it as an irregular thing.

Thanks to Bloody Disgusting for the transcription.

Gremlins 3 News: Sequel, Not a Reboot? Oh My!

0
0

It’s been awhile since we’ve had anything to talk about on the Gremlins 3 front, but the silence has been broken by franchise star Zach Galligan, who recently sat down with Bleeding Cool.

Regarding a reboot, Galligan tells the site he’s pretty certain it will be a straight sequel instead.

I think you can tell what’s happening with Gremlins 3 the same way you could tell with Gremlins 2. It’s the same people and they tend to work the same way. There is a huge time gap but it’s Warner Bros, Spielberg and Chris Columbus. Now, Chris Columbus didn’t have anything to do with Gremlins 2 – because by his own admission he didn’t see a franchise. He kind of regrets it I believe, but he was ‘one and done.’ I don’t think he cared for Gremlins 2 and the direction some of the characters went in, so he’s kind of wrested control back. Everything I’m quoting is stuff he’s publicly said: ‘There will NEVER be a remake. There will NEVER be a reboot. There will only be a SEQUEL.’

As for what style of film the sequel could/will be…

[Columbus] has been aggressively working on a Gremlins 3 that takes place in present day. He tantalizingly says there will be some NEW characters and some OLD characters – I guess in the style of a Force Awakens type sequel. One thing we know for sure is they have a writer on board. The only insight I can give is the following: There was a 6-year gap between Gremlins and Gremlins 2; most of that time was spent with them writing and rejecting ideas and re-writing. One of the ideas that was rejected was ‘gremlins in Vegas.’ They went with that for 18 months and felt it was too expensive. Eventually they came up with the tower idea, where essentially I’m working for Donald Trump, our new President! That took six years to happen. Carl Ellsworth has been apparently working on the script for a year and a half now. If no new names start appearing on the IMDb listing, then that means they like the script. If new names start appearing, y’know Kevin Smith appears, it means it’s back in rewrites with a new vision.

So, how solid is the probability of a Gremlins 3?

Warner Bros definitely wants it, Chris Columbus wants to do it because he’d like to undo the Gremlins 2 thing as he wasn’t thrilled with it, and Spielberg wants to do it I imagine – because he’s Spielberg – and why wouldn’t he want to do it. Once he’s found the right script, he can attach his name and make a ton of money. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

New The Mummy Image Is Packing Star Power

0
0

A new image has arrived from Universal’s reboot of The Mummy featuring our hero Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) eye-to-eye with Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe). Dig it courtesy of EW.

There’s an origin story happening on two different fronts,” director Alex Kurtzman tells EW of the film before its first trailer debuted earlier this month. “I won’t tell you too much more than that, other than to say: One of the things that I think has defined Tom Cruise movies, for 30 years, is that Tom Cruise always saves the day. You know whenever you’re in a Tom Cruise movie that he’s gonna figure out a way to save the day. And that’s great, and it’s why I pay my money to see his movies. However, in the context of a monster movie, it’s challenging because monster movies are about characters who are often very out of control and don’t know how to save the day. The first thing I said to Tom was, ‘It’ll be scarier if we can take away the fundamental knowledge that you’re gonna solve the problem.’

The Mummy

The Mummy (2017); Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe

Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy. The cast also includes Annabelle Wallis (King Arthur, “Peaky Blinders”), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (“American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson”), Oscar winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator), and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond) as the titular character.

The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years–with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible series and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan. The script is by Jon Spaihts and Christopher McQuarrie.

Wrap Your Tentacles Around an Octaman Blu-ray This April

OctamanRetromedia put out a 40th Anniversary DVD of Octaman just a few short years ago. Now Kino Lorber Studio Classic is bringing this schlocky 1971 creature feature into the digital age with fully loaded DVD and Blu-ray releases next year.

From Harry Essex, writer of the all-time-classic The Creature from the Black Lagoon, comes this not-so-classic about scientists in Mexico researching radioactive contamination in waterways that incur the wrath of a monstrous half-man/half-octopus creature.

Pier Angeli, Kerwin Matthews, Jeff Morrow, and Buck Kartalian star in this monster movie that is really most notable for being one of the first films on the illustrious resume of Hollywood make-up effects icon Rick Baker, who designed the titular tentacle terror.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics (in conjunction with MGM) has announced plans to release Octaman on DVD and Blu-ray this coming April. As has become the case with this increasingly niche collector’s market, they’re promising the disc will be loaded with extras, even hinting at a possible interview with Baker himself about his work on the project.

Full disc specs and release date to be announced.
