Blanc-Biehn Productions (BBP), the independent film studio founded by actors/filmmakers Michael Biehn and Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, has announced the Official Selection – and Stateside premiere – of She Rises at the 2017 Macabre Faire Film Festival, running January 13-15 in Long Island, New York.

The twisted thriller also received five Macabre Faire Film Awards nominations, including Best Cinematography in a Feature (Steve Romano), Best Actor in a Feature (Angus Macfadyen), Best Screenplay in a Feature (Macfadyen), Best Actress in a Feature (Daisy McCrackin), and Best Supporting Actress (Blanc-Biehn).

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Larry Wade Carrell (Jacob), She Rises takes a creepy road trip with a film director (Blanc-Biehn) and her leading man (Macfadyen) to their rural set location, a quaint country inn run by an odd, seemingly shy young woman (McCrackin).

It’s screening on Saturday, January 14th, at 3:00 pm.

She Rises was also an official selection at the Irish Film Institute’s Horrorthon Film Festival, held last fall in Dublin, where it made its world premiere; and a special screening at the event proved to be enormously successful.

The Macabre Faire Film Festival will be held at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center, 3845 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Ronkonkoma, NY 11779. Tickets are now available at the Festival’s website.

Black Friday (eBook)

black-fridayWritten by Craig Sawyer

Published by Amazon Digital Services

Have you ever experienced the horror of working a retail job? The zombie apocalypse couldn’t be much worse!

In this short story written by up-and-coming author Craig Sawyer, we find our hero, Zeke, working the graveyard shift in a retail hell of sorts with no idea what he wants to do with his life besides watch zombie movies, drink lots of caffeine and make fun of customers.  Then on one “Black Friday” he discovers his true calling as a bad-ass killer of the undead on the worst shopping day of the year.

I know most of you will agree with me that in today’s world a lot of people walk around in a zombie state as it is, but in stores like Wally-Mart for instance, the level of horror can be even more so as written in this short story.

I really dug this story for the most part but wished it had been longer as I did enjoy it immensely.  Craig’s sense of humor comes out in this story, and the three main characters — Zeke, Tommy, and Selma — reminded me of a few young people that I know so reading about them made me feel like I knew them on that personal level.   “Black Friday” takes itself seriously only in a good way and has that 80’s horror story feel to it, which made it even more entertaining to me.  Fun all the way through, “Black Friday” is a short story that’s well worth the read.

I’m personally looking forward to Craig Sawyer’s next endeavors, which include a graphic novel adaptation of police sargent turned demonolgist Ralph Sarchie’s exploits, which was a book first and most recently the film Deliver Us from Evil, as well as a board game entitled Secret Unknown Stuff: Escape from Dulce.

It was back in 2012 that we wrote our last piece on the long talked about Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon, and since then silence. Years and years of silence. But the worm has turned, and it sounds like Leslie may finally be ready to take the spotlight once again.

The news comes from the official Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon Facebook page, which posted the following…

At the end of the day, this could mean nothing… or everything. You never know with Vernon. We suspect he’ll be around when he’s good and ready. Until then… sleep with one eye open!

Angela Goethals, Scott Wilson, Nathan Baesel, Bridgett Newton, Britain Spellings, Ben Pace, and Kane Hodder were set to star for writer/director Scott Glosserman. It’s unknown whether some or all are still attached.

Some great casting news is coming in for Shane Black’s The Predator as Variety is reporting that Keegan-Michael Key is joining the previously announced Trevante Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook, and Olivia Munn on Fox’s reboot of the alien action franchise that launched in 1987.

Details for the film are being kept firmly under wraps. Look for The Predator in theaters on February 9, 2018.

In The Predator, which will be rated R, Olivia Munn is playing a scientist opposite Boyd Holbrook’s Special Forces commando. That’s about all we know thus far other than the proposed release date.

Black is directing from a script by Fred Dekker. John Davis, Joel Silver, and Lawrence Gordon — who produced the original — are producing.

Is Frank Grillo Done Purging?

$

Frank Grillo has become a staple of The Purge franchise. The first Purge movie left a lot to be desired, The Purge: Anarchy was pretty friggin’ awesome, and Election Year was just okay. Still, with each entry the films have made more and more cash, so you know a fourth one will be here soon enough, but will Grillo (who starred in 2 and 3) be back for another round?

Collider recently caught up with Grillo, who had this to say…

It is what it is, but it’s great. It’s fun. After Anarchy, Universal called me and said, ‘You’ve got a franchise. We’re gonna continue with this if you wanna do this.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, this is great!’ And so, when Election Year was even more successful, they were like, ‘Let’s keep doing this!’ I was like, ‘Maybe. I think I might be done, but you should keep doing it!’ But I love it! [James] DeMonaco, who wrote and directed all of them, reminds me a lot of [‘Kingdom’ creator/showrunner] Byron [Balasco], in the sense that he so understands the world he’s created that you just follow him. For an actor, that’s fun.

I guess we’ll see!

New Details On Monster Movie Portal Popperz

$

0

We’ve still got a few days until the Kickstarter goes live on January 10, but we’ve got some brand new info on director Jerry Macaluso’s monster flick Portal Popperz to share.

From the Press Release:
“I really miss the creatures of the ‘80s. Cool rubber monsters with tons of personality. The work Steve Johnson, Rob Bottin and Chris Walas did so well, and how films like Gremlins helped perfect the balance between horror and humor,” said Macaluso.

Portal Popperz, lead by a number of successful fx industry veterans, has already raised a majority of its budget privately, but has set a funding goal of $75,000 USD to complete the necessary funds to achieve the filmmakers vision.

“My years sculpting and painting monsters on dozens of film led me to use those skills for merchandising with my collectibles company,” Macaluso said. “Now I get to use that experience and the connections I’ve been fortunate enough to make to dip my toe back into filmmaking, a luxury I know most campaigns trying to fulfill rewards don’t have.”

A love letter to films like Gremlins and Critters, in the movie an augmented reality game called Portal Popperz has become a cultural phenomenon, and it seems like everyone has their eyes glued to their smartphones trying to catch the digital creatures. But when a motley crew of misfits discover the Popperz are spawning in the real world, it’s up to our unlikely heroes to halt their path of destruction. Filming will commence in February.

For more information and interview requests, please contact Office@pcstoy.com. PCS Collectibles is also looking for media partners for mutually beneficial product promotions and giveaways to help support the film.

About Jerry Macaluso
Jerry began his career at 17 as an assistant FX artist on the cult classic, ‘Scarecrows.’ Soon after he was hired to re-design the Toxic Avenger for Parts 2 & 3 which led to a move to Los Angeles and supervising practical special effects on projects like Power Rangers, Halloweentown, Weird Science (TV) and Wishmaster 2 & 3.

In addition to his special effects career, Macaluso has also designed and manufactured collectibles for Conan, Warcraft, Masters of the Universe, Judge Dredd, Robocop, The Howling and many others.

Black Christmas (1974) (Blu-ray)

Black ChristmasStarring Olivia Hussey, Art Hindle, Keir Dullea, John Saxon

Directed by Bob Clark

Distributed by Scream Factory

There is only one Bob Clark Christmas movie I watch each year and it doesn’t feature Ralphie and his Red Ryder fantasies.

The endurance of Clark’s 1974 legendary slasher, Black Christmas, can be chalked up to a number of factors but the greatest is this: it is a disturbing film. I frequently come across horror message board topics asking for genuinely scary titles devoid of jump scares and excessive gore, but oddly enough Black Christmas doesn’t get many mentions. Maybe because it has been relegated to the “seasonal viewing only” heap? Regardless, fans will agree that the unsettling events portrayed don’t diminish with repeat viewings; if anything, subsequent watching serves to reinforce that it is a standout among a sea of imitators. The film is also a noted influence on John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) – arguably the granddaddy of slasher films – adding a bit of prestige to its legacy.

The girls of Pi Kappa Sig are throwing a holiday party before the Christmas break when, toward the end of the night, they receive a phone call from a man they’ve been calling “The Moaner”, who has a habit of calling and making unusual noises. Jess (Olivia Hussey) initially accepts the call but also allows her other sisters to listen in, prompting outspoken Barb (Margot Kidder) to jump on the line and goad this mystery man. She and Phyllis (Andrea Martin) argue over the possibility this guy may be more threatening than anyone realizes. Unbeknownst to the ladies partying downstairs, however, moments before the phone call came through an unidentified person (very likely this same caller) snuck up the side of the house and into the attic. And once the party wraps up that same person is found hiding in Claire’s (Lynne Griffin) closet, whereupon she is strangled and placed in a rocking chair in the attic.

The next day Claire’s father comes to the campus to meet her and is understandably stood up. He heads to the sorority house and reports her missing, at which point the girls and their housemother, Mrs. Mac (Marian Waldman), agree to help him locate her. The file a report with the police, led by Lt. Fuller (John Saxon), and Jess also wrangles in Claire’s semi-boyfriend, Chris (Art Hindle), who helps bolster the search by raising hell at the station. Jess, meanwhile, is having problems of her own after confessing to her boyfriend, Peter (Keir Dullea), she is pregnant. She wants an abortion; he is vehemently against it. Claire’s absence grows more concerning when another missing girl is found dead in a nearby park, prompting the cops to ramp up their efforts. The girls are being picked off one by one as the unseen assailant remains hidden in the attic, continuing his phone calls that come after each murder. The cops suspect Peter may be a person of interest, as his interactions with Jess have become increasingly aggressive, but everyone is in for a shock when a tap on the line reveals the true source of the calls – they are coming from within the house.

With the film having been around for over forty years, and fans having been sold one “upgraded” home video version after the next, I suspect most readers are more interested in how Scream Factory’s Blu-ray stacks up against similar editions – which is basically my way of saying this review is a bit glib. For the uninitiated, however, let me say that I cannot overstate how exceptional Clark’s film is – never giving the killer an identity, an entire subplot concerning abortion, a palpable sense of grief for Claire’s father, a cast of interesting, unique people who don’t ever feel like archetypes, and a potentially downer of an ending. Some of his moviemaking tricks are brilliant, like the decision to create Billy’s voice from a combination of three different people (one a woman) and using interchangeable actors to portray the killer so you’re never quite sure who is in the attic. Carl Zittrer’s score is disorienting and minimal, making use of odd instrumentation to add extra unease; it also appears infrequently, giving the movie more of a real life quality. Black Christmas was a reasonable success upon release, more so commercially than critically, but time has been kind to this old gem and many now view it as an outright horror classic.

Hell, it was Elvis’ favorite Christmas movie.

Now the news you’ve all been reading for: the transfer. Scream Factory has taken the additional step of including not only their new 2K scan from the negative but also Critical Mass’ 2006 transfer, which is odd because that edition is clearly inferior to their own. The new 2K disc features a 1.85:1 1080p picture that is very likely the best this film can and will ever look. Black Christmas has a long home video history of looking very grainy, murky, dulled, and soft. I can’t say the new disc’s results are far off that mark but there are clear improvements. For one, grain has been resolved in a tighter field that looks less noisy and more “grindhouse-y”; do not expect an image clear as a crystal unicorn by any means. There is still softness to many faces and objects though detail looks far better here than it ever has before. Colors are more vibrant, too. Black levels run on the hazy side but they’re more stable here than ever. I suppose with a scan of higher resolution and some meticulous work the picture could be improved to some degree but that isn’t to take anything away from the good work Scream Factory has done.

There are a few audio options here, but know that as of this writing one of them is faulty. English DTS-HD MA is available in original mono, 2.0 stereo, and 5.1 surround sound. Being a bit of a purist I decided to go with the original mono track and was instantly greeted by extreme hissing and more popping than a breakdance contest. Scream Factory has (quietly) agreed to an exchange program for those who want a corrected copy. Switching over to the 5.1 track, the audio sounds smooth and refined, offering a more spacious environment for plenty of subtle, creepy rear effects to heighten the terror of Billy’s rampages. If the mono track’s issues are a dealbreaker, by all means exchange your copy but if you have a surround sound system the multi-channel track is a definite winner. Subtitles are available in English SDH.

DISC ONE:

There are four audio commentary tracks: director Bob Clark; actors John Saxon and Keir Dullea; “Billy” (actor Nick Mancuso reprising his role); and Bob Clark again, in what is an interview played over the film.

DISC TWO:

“Film and Furs: Remembering Black Christmas with Art Hindle” – Hindle, who still owns that jacket, talks about being a working actor in Canada when there wasn’t much work, as well as how he wound up auditioning for Clark for a different role.

“Victims and Virgins: Remembering Black Christmas with Lynne Griffin” – The actress who is most famous for having a plastic bag over her head tells a few tales from the set.

“Black Christmas Legacy” – This is a lot of interviews from the film’s actors and notable fans. I found it to be a bit tedious.

“40th Anniversary Panel at Fan Expo 2014” – Saxon, Hindle, Griffin, and Mancuso sit down for this interview/q&a at a convention.

“On Screen!: Black Christmas” – This is an older TV episode covering the making of the film, filled with interviews and anecdotes.

“12 Days of Black Christmas” (SD) is a featurette that runs for 19 minutes and 48 seconds. Saxon opens this piece with some interesting trivia narration before it becomes another standard making-of.

“Black Christmas Revisited” – Hindle and Griffin revisit the old house used in the film, while talking heads are interviewed and spliced in between their visit.

“Archival Interviews with Olivia Hussey, Art Hindle, Margot Kidder, Bob Clark, and John Saxon” is a lengthy series of interviews with some of the cast circa 2006.

“Midnight Screening Q&A with John Saxon, Bob Clark, and Carl Zittrer” – Taken from a screening at L.A.’s Nuart Theater circa 2004.

“Two Scenes with a New Soundtrack” – These feature an earlier sound mix with some slight variations that only super fans or those who just watched the movie will notice. Cool nonetheless.

There a few theatrical trailers (SD), in English and French, a series of original TV and radio spots, an alternate title sequence under the name “Silent Night Evil Night” and an extensive photo gallery.

With “Riverdale” set to debut on The CW in just a few more weeks, the network has released a new trailer and the synopsis of Episode 1.01, entitled “Chapter One: The River’s Edge.” From the looks of things, we are in for one deep, dark ride!

“Riverdale” Episode 1.01 – “Chapter One: The River’s Edge” (1/26/16)
SERIES PREMIERE — As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — not follow in his dad, Fred’s (Luke Perry), footsteps — despite his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (guest star Sarah Habel). With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Archie must look for a new music mentor and turns to Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), but she is focused solely on her band, Josie and the Pussycats. Weighing heavily on his mind is also his fractured friendship with budding writer Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves, which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother, Alice (Mädchen Amick), aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother, Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between her and Archie, but Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty.

And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Riverdale’s Queen Bee, who is happy to stir up trouble amongst the others even though she’s keeping a few secrets of her own. Lee Toland Krieger directed the episode written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
