Bad Kids Of Crestview Academy (2017)

Bad Kids of Crestview AcademyStarring Sammi Hanratty, Colby Arps, Sophia Taylor Ali

Directed by Ben Browder

Directed by Ben Browder, Bad Kids Of Crestview Academy acts as a follow-up to 2012’s Bad Kids Go To Hell – both graphic novels, both incredibly off-the wall with subject matter, but this particular presentation just didn’t hit the mark for this reviewer.

The timeline jumps four years since the last display, where seemingly all of the kids from the last film were wiped out, leaving only one survivor named Matt (Cameron Dean Stewart) confined to his own “relaxation room” in the looney bin. This time around, the focus is on budding bombshell Siouxie (Hanratty), and her dogged attempt to find out who was responsible for the gruesome death of her big sis, a news reporter that met her maker (in this case, a car hood) far too early. So we stick this small collection of overly wealthy and incredibly malcontented youths in detention (think of a much more demented Breakfast Club), and let them loose on the powers-that-be in an all-out blitz of blood, bullets and brutality…unfortunately, the other “B” to speak of here at times is BOREDOM. Sean Astin in his role of a Headmaster is straight-up fun, but sadly even the former Samwise can’t snag the golden ring and save this one from a stagnant doom.

The movie takes off in rather rapid fashion, and you truly get the feel like the walls will rattle and all hell will break loose, but midway through the pic, something happens…and progression feels like a forgotten aspect. CGI also acts as a negative here, with blood sprays coming off too hokey, cheapening what (at least in some spots) tries to present itself as a full-on comic book exhibition. Not to fret, campers – there are still some bright spots to this film, as the cameo of Gina Gershon (still mind-numbingly attractive to this day) as a seedy Senator will make you smile and cringe all at the same time, and the performances of Drake Bell and Ali Astin (Sean’s daughter) are well-utilized and spruce up the dark spaces. Overall, these Kids definitely aren’t alright, and the film won’t bowl anyone over by a long shot, but for some it will at least make you glad that you’re not back in high school.

A Face From Beyond in The Gasp Menagerie

I love it when I get tips from readers.  Nothing gets my interest like fresh evidence from you guys.  I can scour the Net for the weird and wonderful, but finding things first hand is always better.

This one comes from reader Shaun K.  I’ll let him tell the story.

A month ago my father and I were visiting my  grandfather whom I haven’t seen in years. At one point I saw an old picture of my great grandfather and I found this pretty awesome so I decided to take a picture of that picture with my brand new Samsung Galaxy S7.

A face and a great-grandfather.

In the picture of the picture you can see on the bottom left my father, in the middle the subject in question I wanted to photograph and overlapping him you can see me holding my phone. What’s fucked up is the face that you can clearly see in the middle right.

Although it’s probably a trick of the the light, it’s a pretty awesome  coincidence that it looks like a face with so much details, with depth and shadow.

A trick of the light?  Probably.  A face appearing from someplace other than our world?  Maybe.  What say you?

Explore The Gasp Menagerie!

Have a weird story? Potential evidence of the supernatural, or at least something hard to explain? Spot any creepy critters out there roaming the wilds? LET ME KNOW! I’d love to talk about it and possibly write it up right here in the Gasp Menagerie. You’ll get appropriate credit, of course, and everyone else will get fresh creepy (as opposed to fresh Creepy, which, trust me… nobody wants that) to enjoy. As always, I can be found at mrdark@dreadcentral.com. Now get out there, find some weird, and let’s get this party started.

William Castle fans, rejoice! Not one, but two new takes on one of the most beloved movies of Castle’s illustrious career, House on Haunted Hill, are officially on their way ;and we sat down with Castle’s daughter, Terry, to get the scoop on one of them… HER OWN!

Deadline broke the news today that Jason Pagan and Andrew Deutschman (Project Almanac, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension) are in the process of writing a new House on Haunted Hill for Warner Bros. But the fun doesn’t end there…

Funny! I just finished a House on Haunted Hill script myself,” Castle tells us exclusively! “A prequel penned by Terry Castle! I am about to go out with it! As it turns out, I have House on Haunted Hill in my blood… so, let the best man…. excuse me, woman, WIN! I have some of Dad’s original notes for a prequel, and I am running with them. If you remember, Annabelle Loren (Carol Ohmart) was not Frederick’s first wife! My film will be produced under the WILLIAM CASTLE PRODUCTIONS banner.

The original House on Haunted Hill premiered in 1959 with the cool EMERGO gimmick in which a skeleton would fly out over the crowd, and it starred Vincent Price as Frederick Loren. The film was remade in 1999 with Geoffrey Rush in the starring slot and no aforementioned flying skeleton.

Of the two projects… our money is on Castle to really deliver the delightfully disturbing goods!

We all know that Steven Spielberg is no stranger to indulging in the spookier side of life, and his company Amblin has just struck out a new and ghastly path for it to follow!

Deadline is reporting that Amblin Partners has preemptively acquired Unexplained Phenomenon, a pitch from writing team Jason Pagan and Andrew Deutschman (Project Almanac, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension). Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company will produce.

They are keeping the plot under wraps, but the hope is for multiple movies based on true supernatural phenomena, in ways that fits into Spielberg/Amblin films like Close Encounters and E.T. The title refers to the FBI classification for incidents that were investigated and defy logic.

Unexplained Phenomenon is eyeing a 2017 production start. Stay tuned!

Action-Packed Kong: Skull Island Japanese Trailer

$

I don’t know what it is about this Japanese trailer that makes me like it more than the domestic trailers for Kong: Skull Island. Oh, wait! Yes I do! It’s the overly-enthusiastic narrator! Yeah, he rules!

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Oscar winner Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero.

Vogt-Roberts is directing the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly. Kong: Skull Island is produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia.

To fully immerse audiences in the mysterious Skull Island, director Vogt-Roberts, his cast, and the filmmaking team filmed across three continents over six months, capturing its primordial landscapes on Oahu, Hawaii; on Australia’s Gold Coast; and finally in Vietnam, where filming took place across multiple locations, some of which have never before been seen on film.

Kong: Skull Island will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theaters, and IMAX beginning March 10, 2017, from Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Synopsis:
A diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific – as beautiful as it is treacherous – unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

This is normally the part of the episode where I try to write something funny or clever… or dickish. Well, I just spent the night sleeping in a bar in Osaka because I missed the last train home. So forgive me if I just don’t fuckin’ care.

That being said, we recorded our “Year in Review” episode during our New Year’s party. Needless to say, we got really drunk. Joined by Miguel Rodriguez of the Horrible Imaginings Film Fest, we go over the best – and worst – of 2016. Don’t say we never gave ya nothin’!

TCA Winter 2017: All We Know About American Horror Story So Far

A lot of info came out today from FX’s presentation to the Television Critics Association with regard to “American Horror Story” so let’s dig in!

First up, in addition to the Season 7 renewal announced back in October of last year, per Deadline, the network has picked up two more installments, adding 8th and 9th seasons of the horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.

“’American Horror Story’ launched the modern limited series revolution, and – as evidenced by the most recent installment, ‘Roanoke’ – it remains as vital today as when ‘Murder House’ stunned audiences six years ago,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. “Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast, and plot.”

“When Ryan and Brad came to us seven years ago with the idea for a horror series structured as an anthology, with a group of actors returning year after year in different roles, settings, and time periods, we were in awe of the sheer originality and ambition of their vision,” said Fox TV Group Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman. “They’ve since delivered six fantastic installments which have rightfully attracted millions of viewers, critical raves, and dozens of awards.”

But first things first… what about the upcoming 7th season?  Deadline also got some scoop on that.

Series co-creator Murphy said, “There are only three people who know what season 7 is about – Dana Walden, John Landgraf, and Sarah Paulson.”

Per Landgraf, it’s “shrouded in secrecy,” but it was revealed that series regulars Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are returning, and Season 7 will be set in the modern day.

We should have lots more info on the next chapter of “American Horror Story” in the coming weeks so stay tuned! Here’s hoping they give Evan Peters a bit more to do than what we got in “Roanoke.”

Lost in the Pacific (2017)

$

Starring Brandon Routh, Yuqi Zhang, Russell Wong, Yun Lin, Sunny Wang

Directed by Vincent Zhou

An island overrun by red-eyed, poison-fanged, mutant killer cats!

Brandon Routh as an ex-Special Forces soldier turned sous-chef (”Better to create than destroy” is how he explains his career change) who keeps beating the crap out of the movie’s villain until the moment he’s about to kill him at which moment his crippling PTSD kicks in allowing the bad guy to repeatedly take him down!

An airline captain who feels compelled to remind us that she’s the Captain in nearly every single conversation yet spends very little time in the actual cockpit and even less time actually piloting the plane when she is!

A $10 million dollar Chinese-US co-production with digital effects that aren’t that much more convincing than those seen in your typical Sharknado movie!

How do you say “I can’t believe it’s not an Asylum movie” in Chinese, anyway?

I don’t know. But this is something a Chinese character actually does say in this movie:

”Monsters and insane women… Please just be a nightmare!

Not since William Shatner was possessed by a druid idol in the 1973 TV movie The Horror at 20,000 Feet has an airliner been threatened by a more ludicrous menace played with a straight face than the herd of unconvincingly animated freakish felines frightening the unlucky passengers of the luxury airliner in Lost in the Pacific.

Is it a horror movie?

An airline disaster flick?

An action thriller?

All of the above?

None of the above>

Even when it picks a genre it has a hard time sticking to it because, particularly early on, the thriller elements are nullified by an oddly light-hearted undertone that feels tonally out of synch with the circumstances being portrayed.

Is it possible to describe a movie about an airplane as a “trainwreck”?

Folks, I’m going to level with you. There is no way I can accurately convey to you how preposterous, often quite enjoyably so if you have an appreciation for unadulterated schlock, Lost in the Pacific is without delving into a certain degree of spoilers. Fairly certain reading the next couple paragraphs will help you decide if this is a movie you want to witness with your own eyes and ears. Now I’m not going to let all the mutant cats out of this bag but I feel compelled to give you a basic breakdown of what the actual storyline because you won’t believe what I’m about to describe happened in a movie not produced A) for laughs and/or B) for Syfy.

Okay, here goes.

***ALARM! SHARK ALARM!***

A Chinese businessman whose company is facing financial ruin plans the inaugural flight of his new luxury airliner that may as well have been dubbed “Skytanic”. The passengers for this maiden flight are almost all VIPs and celebrities (famous American boxer, horny Chinese actress who really wants to go a few rounds with the boxer, blind cellist, Chinese idol singer who also happens to be the owner’s estranged son, billionaire Saudi prince, nosy Chinese reporter I am 99% sure was redubbed in post-production, etc.). Very few of them will actually factor into the plot in any substantial fashion despite inordinate amounts of time spent establishing their characters. So determined is the airline owner to persuade the wealthy Saudi prince to invest in his floundering company that he orders the pilots to flow through a major storm to stay on schedule.

Naturally, the storm damages the plane. They’re forced to land on an abandoned island in the Pacific that, according to both pilot and the co-pilot, nobody goes near because it is rumored to be haunted by supernatural creatures. Sure enough; they’re attacked by a herd of mutant cats and forced to take-off despite being desperately low on fuel.

The sight of these cutely ghastly critters charging after the launching airplane en masse looks exactly how I imagine a cat food commercial directed by Roger Corman would be.

In the process of escaping, the plane picks up two more passengers: paramilitary types who had been in hiding on the island for some time. They claim to be part of a United Nations biological containment team but you know that’s not true because they can’t stop behaving suspiciously. In a less than shocking twist, the shady soldiers of fortune turn out to be just that.

When the airline owner’s American assistant (good luck figuring out where the Scott Caan ends and the Scott Adkins begins with this guy) overhears them in the bathroom stall plotting to sell a vial of a soil sample from the island worth $20 million to their employers, the mercs confront him, and — suddenly the body of another character is discovered with the soldiers coming out of her bedroom. Wait. What? Did they kill the wrong person? Was this a continuity error? Did some scenes get left on the cutting room floor? What the hell just happened?

Complicating matters, they’ve lost any and all radio communication because the cat creatures took out the plane’s antennae. Further complicating matters, one of the cat creatures has gotten aboard the plane and begins to attack people (off-camera) and make lots of noises in the ductworks (off-camera) before finally appearing (on-camera) to mostly just stand around doing not much of anything.

The Chinese actress killed off-camera by the cat creature (presumably); turns out she’s alive even after she was pronounced dead by more than one person. Was that a different Chinese actress? Seriously, did I just zone out and miss an explanation? WTF?!?!

Brandon Routh’s Under Siege meets “Iron Chef” impression could have ended the movie a half hour sooner but his debilitating flashbacks allow the main paramilitary villain to subdue him, hijack the plane, and demand they land it on the top secret world’s largest aircraft carrier floating undetected in the middle of the Pacific.
The Captain who finally does some actually captaining and her co-pilot who speaks like he learned English from the “Hooked on Phonics: George Takei Edition” miraculously land the jumbo jet on the even more jumbo aircraft carrier, barely, only to discover everyone on board the carrier is either dead or missing; except, naturally, for the one mortally wounded scientist who lives just long enough to sort-of explain what the hell is going on. The carrier is also overrun with yet another herd of red-eyed, poisonous, mutant kitties. And if that’s not enough, the surviving passengers have to find yet a way off and fast because the vessel has been set to self-destruct in a matter of minutes.

I won’t spoil how it all culminates other than to say you will actually watch a herd of computer-generated pointy-eared black cats get charmed into submission by the musical styling’s of a blind Yo-Yo Ma type cellist after he busts out his instrument right there on the deck of the ship. That actually happened.

***END SHARK ALARM!***

And the most amazing thing of all: this movie is a remake!

I couldn’t believe it when I looked Lost in the Pacific up on IMDB and discovered the director and co-writer made roughly the exact same movie in 2010 on a much lower budget. Somehow, he managed to get an even bigger budget to remake the movie for theatrical release with a more diverse international cast and in 3D to boot. According to IMDB, the budget for Lost in the Pacific was $10 million. I find that hard to fathom, particularly because – well, take a look for yourself at what the cat creatures look like.

That’s not $10 million effects there. That’s 2006 Sci-Fi Channel original movie effects. Ah, hell, this movie would be right at home premiering on Syfy today. The plane doesn’t look all that convincing much of the time, either.

I could almost give Lost in the Pacific a rave review just for the schlock value if it wasn’t for this 20-25 minute stretch right after the initial cat attack when just as the film should be taking off to the heights of absurdity, instead it gets lost in a verbal abyss. It quite literally turns into characters standing around arguing about the plot without actually engaging in one to speak of. Almost all the action during this stretch takes place off-camera and that’s when there’s even any action to speak of, or speak about, as the case may be.

Again, $10 million budget? How much money is Brandon Routh commanding these days?

If you’re a connoisseur of schlock cinema or just looking for an unintentionally ridiculous b-movie to get together with friends to watch and have a few laughs with then Lost in the Pacific should do the trick. For everyone else, who knows? Maybe they’ll remake it again in a few years with an even bigger budget?

Maybe next time they’ll actually get Henry Cavill?

Rifftrax Releases Birdemic Director’s Previous Unreleased Clone Thriller Replica

I remember when Birdemic: Shock and Terror became a thing there were many skeptical naysayers out there convinced it was really just a struggling filmmakers attempt to make an intentionally bad movie and sell it as a modern day Plan 9 from Outer Space ala The Room.

Now the fine folks at Rifftrax have unearthed master of the romantic thriller James Nguyen’s previously never-before-seen sci-fi thriller Replica and from the looks of things no one will ever question Nguyen’s talents ever again.

Replica, the never-before-released film from the mind of James Nguyen (Birdemic: Shock and Terror, Julie and Jack), is here for the very first time!

In the near future, in the hallowed halls of clip art-adorned offices, technicians clone organs from stem cells using cool near-future technology. This is directly to the benefit of Joe, who has a shiny new kidney, which is good because he’s so aggressively average he makes Caspar Milquetoast look like Casper van Dien! He’s got two suits, a job in sales, a new girlfriend, a dead girlfriend, and another new girlfriend—or is it the same dead girlfriend? It’s all part of the fun!

Witness the jaw-dropping “action” that will have you saying “They couldn’t possibly show that car backing out again!”

Embrace the Birdemic-level charm of Replica!

Rifftrax have released the film “unriffed”, meaning there is no comedic commentary by Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, or Bill Corbett running throughout the film. This is Nguyen’s flick the way it was meant to be seen even though it hasn’t been seen until now. Replica is available for stream or download for only $7.99, which, from the looks of things, is also how much the movie cost to produce.

According to Rifftrax’s webpage, a “riffed” version will be released on February 10th. Based on what I’ve seen in the clip they’ve provided I think I can hold out until then. Maybe longer.

What follows is a terrifying mix of actual animal attacks (supervised by professional circus trainers) and over-the-top ’80s Italian gore that remains the greatest eco-revenge shocker in EuroCult history. Some of the UK’s top artists will be collaborating on a monster-themed charity project this year, which you can learn about in the following press release.

From the Press Release:
Frankenstein’s Monster as you have never seen him before, completely customised in unique designs by some of the UK’s top artists from the prop-making and movie Special FX make-up industries.

25 of the UK’s top prop-making, sculpting and SPFX make-up artists have been brought together to take part in a unique charity project. Each artist has been given a bespoke Frankenstein-inspired monster bust, created and supplied by SVFX University of Bolton Special & Visual Effects team, with the simple instruction: Customise him into any design you like.

Once customised, the artists then donate the finished bust back to the Monster Charity Project organisers who will auction them off via an online auction site. 100% of the proceeds raised from the auction will be donated to Make-A-Wish UK. All the artists and the back room project crew donate their time and skills totally free of charge.

Last year the same project team raised a staggering £28,000 for Make-A-Wish at Star Wars Celebration London with a similar project featuring an iconic Star Wars Helmet. 30 artists took part creating such custom designs as Deadpool, Judge Dredd , Batman and a Studio Ghibli inspired design.

The busts will be going on a UK tour during 2017 taking in such conventions as Horror Con UK, finishing the year at Creaturegeddon where many of the featured artists can be seen sharing their work and also available for a chat. The Monster Charity Project is also in talks to have the display featured at the very popular Grimmfest event in Manchester.

People will be able to start viewing the completed busts from May 2017 via various social media outlets and the above mentioned conventions, the project busts then go to auction on October 31st 2017, ending November 5th 2017

Charles Band’s acclaimed series “Ravenwolf Towers” has returned, and we’ve got everything you need below.

From the Press Release:
Mark the first full moon of 2017 with a brand new, bloody and bizarre episode of Charles Band’s hit series RAVENWOLF TOWERS!

Titled “Bonds of Blood”, this is the second episode in the RAVENWOLF TOWERS series which debuted last December to rave reviews and fan acclaim.

RAVENWOLF TOWERS: Bonds of Blood will be released on Full Moon Entertainment’s Amazon Channel (www.fullmoonamazon.com) and via FullMoonStreaming.com on January 12. It will also be available on DVD from January 20.

The chilling, seven-part horror series is directed and produced by Band, who is releasing one episode every full moon. And as a bonus for Full Moon film fanatics, embedded within each weird and wicked episode of the series, Band has found novel ways to re-introduce some of Full Moon’s most famous and feared characters and creatures into the narrative.

Synopsis:
RAVENWOLF TOWERS, the dark saga of a family of incestuous lunatics lording over the remains of a looming, formerly opulent and now dilapidated Hollywood hotel.

Like a cross between Jack Hill’s 1964 Gothic shocker SPIDER-BABY and Dan Curtis’ beloved horror soap opera DARK SHADOWS, RAVENWOLF TOWERS follows the gruesome and bizarre adventures of Jake, the new assistant manager at ‘The Towers’ who is soon subject to the horror at the heart of the building: guests disappear without a trace, mad doctors meddle with madder science, degenerate monsters lurking around every corner and a beautiful woman who may be a distressed damsel in need of saving…or just might be the most terrifying resident of RAVENWOLF TOWERS.

At the center of it all is the spastic, inbred clan whose minds have become irrevocably warped as they live, love, die and commit all manner of sin within the walls of ‘The Towers’.
