Happy Birthday: Edgar Allan Poe

You know, we’re just tired of writing stories about celebs dying so instead we’re focusing now on celebrating their lives! Case in point: the great Edgar Allan Poe, who was born on this day, January 19th, in 1809! He would have been 208.

There’s not a day that goes by without Poe’s influence being felt throughout the genre, and we’re all better off for his decision to jot down the wondrous horrors that spawned from his imagination.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to revere the man, the myth, and the legend of the truly one-of-a-kind Edgar Allan Poe. Cheers, good sir!

14 Films that Prove Revenge is a Dish Best Served Awesome

0
0

Let’s be real, we’ve all fantasized about taking lethal revenge. Sometimes the girl of our dreams gets stolen by the captain of the football team, or the dude whose dad owns the company gets our promotion. I mean just today I pictured how it would all work out if I smashed a pint glass over the head of the dude who cut me in line at the bar. I’m just saying, we all have our moments, and if not for the fear of the law who knows how it would all go down.

You know who doesn’t have to worry about consequences? Revenge movie protagonists. They are free to spend their life on the lam or go out in a blaze of glory. Because they’re badass. And, well, not real. But mostly badass. As they make their way through hordes of bad dudes to satisfy their righteous rage, we get to enjoy the consequence free catharsis of their brutality.

With My Father Die releasing on the 20th, I figured now was a good time to go over some of the revenge films that I consider most savage. Presented by FilmRise, My Father Die tells the story of Asher, a deaf mute seeking revenge on his father Ivan. At the age of 12, Ivan brutally beat Asher and killed his brother Chester, leaving Asher permanently deaf and emotionally scarred. Now, 21 years later, Asher is given his chance for revenge. I was excited for this one a while ago, as I’m a fan of Joe Anderson from the tragically short lived TV series “The River.” I got a chance to watch the film recently, and I can definitely say it lives up to this list. Directed by Sean Brosnan, check it out Friday On Demand or in select theaters.

My Father Die

Now keep in mind, this is a list of films where revenge is delivered awesomely. That doesn’t just mean the most violent. I mean, that has something to do with it, but sometimes the most brutal vengeance is subtle. So without further ado, here are Ted’s Top 14 Films that Prove Revenge is a Dish Best Served Awesome.

14) Death Sentence (2007):

Death Sentence

When in doubt, never, ever murder Kevin Bacon’s family. This one might be a bit of a surprise for most, as there are certainly revenge flicks out there with more loathsome antagonists or higher body counts. What made Death Sentence stand out to me was just how gritty it felt. From start to end, this is a dirty and brutal film. Nothing feels clean about any of the kills, fueled by raw emotion and without any finesse. Bacon’s downward spiral leads him to a dark place where there’s no coming back from. In the end, he doesn’t care. This isn’t good vs evil. This is vengeance.

13) The Exterminator (1980):

The Exterminator

The Exterminator is a movie that I saw at a party in college. The resident ultra-hipster had set up his VHS player on the living room TV and was proudly displaying his vast collection of, “shit you just can’t get on DVD, man!” Also on display that night were classics such as Hell Comes to Frogtown and some racist old school Disney shit. At the time The Exterminator came on, I was thoroughly interested in conversing with females and imbibing liquor. I started paying attention when a dude got his spine ripped out with a meathook, and was invested when another dude got tortured with a flamethrower. What makes The Exterminator stand out isn’t just the ridiculous over-the-top 80’s violence, but just how broad he goes to get his revenge. John Eastland kills gang members, mob bosses, corrupt senators, child molestors, you name it. If you want to see a guy going, “fuck it, I guess I’m all about revenge now,” then The Exterminator is your film.

12) Frightmare (1983):

Frightmare

There are few things worse than a vengeful bastard coming back from beyond the grave. But when you dig him up yourself and drag him to an abandoned mansion for a night of partying and sex, you’re kind of asking for it. Frightmare is considered a cult classic for a number of reason. There’s of course the gruesome murders and over-the-top violence. That’s a good part of what makes Frightmare fun. What really makes Frightmare fun is the tongue in cheek commentary on horror movie hero worship. I mean, come on, we all love our favorite stars with a passion that’s downright unhealthy. It manages to take the piss out of horror fandom while still paying reverence to it. It should be seen at least once by any obsessive horror geek.

11) The Last House on the Left (2009):

As if picking the remake of the original 1972 version wasn’t controversial enough, let me also rustle your jimmies by letting you know I picked this over both versions of I Spit on Your Grave. Feel free to argue with me all you want, but I picked the 2009 version of The Last House on the Left for a few reasons. First, the film isn’t your typical rape/revenge story. This isn’t the victim taking revenge, but her family. It’s so easy to do faux girl power through rape/revenge, that the whole genre just feels exploitative. Secondly, the remake is much more character focused than the original. The number of grotesque and shocking events are reduced, instead focused on a few major moments. We get much more of a sense of who these villains and heroes are, and the choices they made that led them to this clash. Lastly, the final microwave scene is just unforgettable, made all the more brutal by actually caring about the characters.

Faux Leatherface UK Debacle – The Director Speaks!

Yesterday we brought you news that Lightning Pictures released a movie this week in the UK entitled Leatherface but it is NOT Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s Leatherface (a release date for that is as of yet to be determined). Instead the film is actually Rene Perez’s Playing with Dolls: Bloodlust, the sequel to his 2014 film Playing with Dolls.

This is a complete and total pile of bullshit meant only to mislead consumers and make a quick buck. Today Perez contacted us with a statement…

I am apposed [sic] to this title change but I am powerless to stop it. I made no money from this sale. The sales agency didn’t even inform me that a sale was made to the UK. I was unaware until I saw this article. At the moment I am making a 3rd Playing with Dolls movie. I will be self releasing the new Playing with Dolls online to avoid any issues like this in the future. Apologies to my fellow horror fans for this title change.

Roger that, Rene. Thanks for reaching out, and again… shame on you, Lightning Pictures.

Don’t Feed The Troll (Short, 2017)

Dont Feed the TrollStarring Gaetano Iacono, Sonia Villani, Jennice Carter

Directed by Marc Fratto

Everyone checking in on social media has encountered them: the internet troll – that unfeeling, insensitive miscreant who feels their life has some sort of meaning by throwing down hurtful insults and demeaning comments at users who post online. Well, what if the opportunity arose to get these bottom-feeders back…painfully?

Marc Fratto’s ultra-entertaining 17-minute short film, Don’t Feed The Troll puts us next to the keyboard of a hate-spewing lowlife (Iacono) whose sole mission is to spit racist and homophobic venom at people online, and when the troll meets his match (and a rather creepy one, at that), you can rest assured that there will be one less keyboard warrior on this planet to contend with. Fratto’s use of current societal woes works wonders here, and the amusing portrayal of a computer tough-guy by Iacono is the stuff of legend here – we all have dealt with these people, and it feels so good to see the impending comeuppance. Feel free to give this one a look when you get the chance, and don’t be afraid of the blue-screen-of-death when it pops up on your laptop…that is, unless you’ve managed to summon the troll.

We have the early details for you right here!

Cult of Chucky – New Behind the Scenes Image Loses its Head

0
0

Star Fiona Dourif just gave fans their first look at Chucky from the set of Cult of Chucky! Well sort of… in a weird way…

About Cult of Chucky:
Cult of Chucky, an all-new spellbinding chapter of the Child’s Play thriller franchise, began principal photography in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on January 9, 2017. The seventh film in the blockbuster series will be released in a bone-chilling Unrated Version on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD in fall 2017 — just in time for Halloween. Packed with the franchise’s signature blend of horror and demented humor, Cult of Chucky is the latest production from Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 30 years since Chucky first terrified moviegoers in Child’s Play,” said Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “Since then the films have generated millions in worldwide box office revenue. Now Chucky’s back with more scores to settle in his trademark twisted style, and you can bet he won’t stop until he gets his revenge.”

Cult of Chucky

Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky) returns as Nica, the wheelchair-bound heroine framed by Chucky for the bloody murders of her entire family. She’s joined by franchise veterans Alex Vincent (Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2) and Jennifer Tilly (Monsters, Inc., Bride of Chucky), with Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) once again providing the eerie, unnerving voice of the demon doll possessed by the spirit of a maniacal serial killer.

Don Mancini, writer of the Child’s Play franchise, is the executive producer of the new film, which he also directs from his original script. Longtime franchise producer David Kirschner (The Pagemaster, Frailty) is joined this time by Ogden Gavanski (Warm Bodies, Immortals). The production team includes special-effects guru and associate producer Tony Gardner (Zombieland, Curse of Chucky), director of photography Michael Marshall (“Killjoys”), production designer Craig Sandells (Mother’s Day), and costume designer Patricia J. Henderson (ATM).

Synopsis:
Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all.

Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her, he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.

New Kong: Skull Island TV Spot and Banner Rage On!

Nothing brings a smile to my face more than the image of a giant, pissed off gorilla! Kong is very much king, and this new banner and TV spot only underscore that fact!

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Oscar winner Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero.

Vogt-Roberts directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly. Kong: Skull Island is produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia.

To fully immerse audiences in the mysterious Skull Island, director Vogt-Roberts, his cast, and the filmmaking team filmed across three continents over six months, capturing its primordial landscapes on Oahu, Hawaii; on Australia’s Gold Coast; and finally in Vietnam, where filming took place across multiple locations, some of which have never before been seen on film.

Kong: Skull Island will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theaters, and IMAX beginning March 10, 2017, from Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Synopsis:
A diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific – as beautiful as it is treacherous – unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.
