Allow me to be clear… the streaming service Shudder is a horror fan’s dream. And now, given the fact that they’re premiering movies… well, it doesn’t get much better than this, kids! Next up to the plate for them – Sadako vs. Kayako!

Hideo Nakata’s Ring and Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge are known worldwide as two of the most terrifying and groundbreaking horror films ever made. To this day, horror fans debate: “Which of the two is truly scarier?” and “Whose curse is stronger, Sadako’s or Kayako’s?” No one ever thought that these questions would get answered, let alone think that we would ever see these infamously horrifying demons face off. At long last, Sadako vs. Kayako brings Ring’s and The Grudge’s two forces of evil into the ring for the ultimate grudge match.

Related Story: Exclusive Interview with Elly Nanami (Sadako) and Runa Endo (Kayako) on Sadako vs. Kayako

Responsible for this franchise-blending is director/screenwriter Koji Shiraishi, who is known for creating unconventional spiritual and supernatural scenes in films such as The Curse, Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman, and the Kowasugi series. Now, he brings the characters from Ring and The Grudge back to the big screen as he delivers viewers a wildly fun, tongue-in-cheek thrill ride that finally answers the question: Whose curse is stronger?

Sadako vs. Kayako is available now exclusively on Shudder.

The Exorcist Season 2 Update

“The Exorcist,” like “Hannibal,” was one of those shows that I truly believe we were lucky to have. We’re still waiting to find out if we’ll be seeing a Season 2, but showrunner Jeremy Slater seems pretty optimistic. Recently he took to Twitter with the following update…

Earlier Slater had the following to say about where Season 2 would be going…

A potential Season Two would find Marcus, Tomas, and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession. That doesn’t mean we’ll never see any of the Rances again, but I think the fans would feel disappointed and cheated if we simply brought Captain Howdy back for round three. The Rances have escaped this legacy of terror–for the time being, anyway–and it seems cruel to immediately drag them back for ten more episodes of suffering. Our challenge now is to create a new family that you care about just as much as the Rances and to find ways to make their story feel just as compelling and unique as what came before.

It may seem hard to believe, but this year’s sci-fi shooter Prey was actually announced all the way back in 2006, when it was going to be a sequel to the previous game of the same name. Yup, it’s been 10 years in the making, although it’s now a completely new IP rather than a sequel (they’re referring to it as a re-imagining).

We don’t have much longer to wait either, because it’s been announced that Prey will be coming our way on May 5, so it’s almost time for the hunter to become the hunted. Bethesda have also debuted a new gameplay trailer for what looks like it will be their biggest title of the year.

From the Press Release:
Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced Prey® will release worldwide on Friday, May 5, 2017 for the Xbox One, PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system and PC. Prey is the highly-anticipated first-person sci-fi action game from Arkane® Studios – creators of the award-winning Dishonored® series which includes the 2012 ‘Game of the Year’ and the critically-acclaimed follow-up, Dishonored® 2.

When you awaken aboard Talos I, an immense space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032, you find yourself as the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever – but things have gone terribly wrong. The space station has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted. As you dig into the dark secrets of Talos I and your own past, you must survive using the tools found on the station, your wits, weapons, and mind-bending abilities to defeat the Typhon alien threat.

Fans who pre-order Prey will receive the exclusive Cosmonaut Shotgun Pack. The pre-order bonus consists of Morgan Yu’s family heirloom Margrave shotgun and tools to fight threats aboard Talos I including: three Neuromods players can spend to acquire new abilities, two Medkits, a Fabrication plan to create the Shotgun and Ammo, a starter kit for building tools and weapons, and a unique upgrade to help players preserve their limited resources.

Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word tells the tale of what happens when a young man is executed for committing murder and he leaves behind a curse letter in which he promises to take vengeance on all those connected to his trial.

Starring Green Lantern‘s Mike Doyle, Bitch Slap‘s Erin Cummings, Devin Bonnée, and The Boondock Saints‘ Sean Patrick Flanery, the flick had its World Premiere at last year’s SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas.

Look for it on VOD on March 7, 2017 via Momentum Pictures

Bornless Ones (2017)

Starring Margaret Judson, Devin Goodsell, Michael Johnston

Directed by Alexander Babaev

Influence on a particular film has both its drawbacks, as well as its benefits, and in the case of Alexander Babaev’s demonic-possession/cabin-dwelling, young adults-in-peril flick, Bornless Ones, we see a bit of a reflection in the mirror from moons ago (1981 ringin’ a bell)?

Admittedly so, the filmmakers used The Evil Dead as a sort of template for their latest film, and while some could argue that this would represent somewhat of a derivative tactic, I’ll be one to admit that this was a fairly fun movie, shedding aside the comparison to Raimi’s classic. The movie follows a girl named Emily (Judson), who’s just made a bit of a backhanded purchase – you got it, a cabin DEEP in the woods (smart purchase, young lady) – and if the prospect of becoming an owner of a new piece of property isn’t daunting enough, this chick’s got her share of baggage already. Having just lost both of her parents in a devastating auto accident, she’s now the primary caretaker of her palsy-afflicted brother, Zach (Johnston). So before he’s shuttled off to a place where he can be given the proper care that he needs, Emily and a small gaggle of pals head to the cabin for one last weekend of retrospection, peace, quiet, and fending off some really pissed off demonic spirits. With odd carvings etched into the floorboards and every conceivable issuance of something evil, they’re initially shrugged off – hey, when it’s time to party, to hell with the devil! Only problem is, malevolent spirits usually flock to those in a weakened state…hello, Zach! With the promise of a fresh, healthy start, he allows them to overtake his body, and that’s when the carnage begins.

I know that some purists will take a big ol’ dump on this one strictly because it has an “identity crisis,” but once you settle in and give this one a good look, you’ll see that aside from its downfalls (moronic thought patterns and some less-than-concrete-performances), the movie does really try hard to convince us that this is not a piggybacking attempt, but a tribute to one of the greats. Lovers of gore will NOT have room to complain, as there is plenty of the crimson getting splashed around, and overall the movie does try to distance itself as its own. I’ll advise fans of gore and unknowing adolescents getting slaughtered in a woodsy setting to park their buns in a comfy seat, crack open their favorite adult beverage, and just enjoy this one for what it is. The film hits VOD services on February 10th for those wiling to give this a look.

10 Horror Comedies a True Fan MUST See

$

Every now and then we need a laugh from our horror. To take the macabre side of fiction and inject it with a dash of humor is doing it justice, as no one, ever, is entirely serious. We need a chuckle break sometimes, and these movies are going to give you plenty of chuckle breaks!

What We Do in the Shadows
Verdict: Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi crafted one hell of a raucous piece here. If batshit crazy were an adequate description, I’d leave it at that, but this one far surpasses batshit crazy!

Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) – three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

Young Frankenstein
Verdict: This outlandish film grows on you like a softball sized tumor. You may not love it after a single viewing, but after a return visit or two you’re going to adore the props and both Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman will absolutely steal your soul!

A young neurosurgeon (Gene Wilder) inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. In the castle he finds a funny hunchback called Igor, a pretty lab assistant named Inga and the old housekeeper, frau Blucher -iiiiihhh!-. Young Frankenstein believes that the work of his grandfather is only crap, but when he discovers the book where the mad doctor described his reanimation experiment, he suddenly changes his mind…

The Cabining
Verdict: An insanely underrated movie that’s stuffed full of good jokes, The Cabining is a must see. We get a variety of comedic styles and that separates this from most. When it comes to satirical pictures this is one of the best of modern times.

Todd and Bruce, a hapless screenwriting team, get one last shot at success thanks to Todd’s wealthy uncle, Sarge. If they pen a worthy horror script, Sarge will fund the entire project. But there is one condition – the script must be complete in two weeks. With the deadline looming and no fresh ideas, Todd and Bruce head to Shangri-La, a serene artist’s retreat, with the hope that the peace and company of fellow artists will inspire greatness… or, failing greatness, at least enough for straight-to-DVD. Shangri-La proves to be anything but serene, as the artists die off one by one, seemingly by accident. Bruce convinces Todd to soak in this morbid atmosphere to help with the writing, but soon those two are fighting for their lives as well.

Zombeavers
Verdict: A beautifully cheesy throwback film that never, for one moment, forgets its love of 80s cinema. The animatronics and abundance of practical special effects look awesome, not that you’ll notice them much through the tears of hilarity cloud your vision.

ZOMBEAVERS is an action-packed horror/comedy in which a group of college kids staying at a riverside cabin are menaced by a swarm of deadly zombie beavers. A weekend of sex and debauchery soon turns gruesome as the beavers close in on the kids. Riding the line between scary, sexy and funny, the kids are soon fighting for their lives in a desperate attempt to fend off the hoard of beavers that attack them in and around their cabin.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil
Verdict: A glorious satirical piece that toys with every genre trope you can imagine, then throws them away like old trash. The daringness of the production is absolute beauty and two tremendous performers emerge as the perfect fit for backwoods terror… even if they are just cuddly good old hillbillies.

Two lovable West Virginian hillbillies are headed to their “fixer-upper” vacation cabin to drink some beer, do some fishin’, and have a good time. But when they run into a group of preppy college kids who assume from their looks that they must be in-bred, chainsaw-wielding killers, Tucker & Dale’s vacation takes a bloody and hilarious turn for the worse.

The ‘Burbs
Verdict: Often recognized as a comedic piece alone, The ‘Burbs actually has an extremely dark side. As our protagonists begin to put two and two together, and realize that they’re new neighbors may be hiding some awfully grim secrets, the tension shoots through the roof and we’re given a tremendous finale. A slept on 80s film, no two ways about it!

This story takes place in a typical American neighborhood, when some new neighbors come to live in the house next to Ray Peterson. These new people are really strange; nobody has ever seen them, their house is a real mess, and during the night you can hear weird noises from their basement. The only thing they know is their name: Klopeks. One day Walter (an old man of the neighborhood) suddenly disappears and everyone starts to suspect the Klopeks…

Evil Dead 2
Verdict: While Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead set out to terrify us, Evil Dead 2 sets out to terrify and disgust us, but most importantly, it makes us laugh our asses off. The comedy is brilliant, and somehow, quite organic. This is the piece that truly turned Bruce Campbell into a star, and we should all be eternally grateful for that!

Ashley Williams travels to a secluded cabin in the woods with his girlfriend Linda where they find a tape recording of a professor and a book of evil. This unleashes a bunch of evil spirits that constantly terrorize Ash. Meanwhile a journalist comes to the area to study the book of evil. Ash and her end up having to survive this swarm of evil until morning comes.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
Verdict: The greatest zom-com since Zombieland, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is filled with so many over the top sequences it’s almost hard to believe. Never in a million years would I have imagined any zombie film rivaling Evil Dead 2, but you’ll understand it is indeed a possibility the moment you see a zombie have his packer pulled off by a bare set of hands. Sadly, this is another underrated flick.

A reckless janitor accidentally releases a zombie from a laboratory of research. Meanwhile, the teenagers scouts Ben Goudy and Carter Grant decide to camp for the last time since they are too old to be scouts. The problem is that they do not want to harm the feelings of their friend Augie Foster and the Scout Leader Rogers. They have a flat tire after hitting a deer on the road and Carter’s sister Kendall Grant, her boyfriend and her friend Chloe stop their Jeep to see whether they need a ride. They invite Ben and Carter to go to a party in the night. The two scouts leave the camping during the night to go to the party. When they drive through the town, they do not see a living soul and they decide to visit a night-club since the bouncer is not at the door. They discover that people have turned into zombies and they team-up with Ben’s recent acquaintance Denise Russo, who is bartender in the nightclub, and Augie that was left alone at the camp and came to the town. Soon they discover…

Deathgasm
Verdict: I’m no metal head, but the great thing about Deathgasm – a story about metal heads who resurrect some really evil shit – is that you don’t have to be a metal head to enjoy it. It’s hilarious, it’s action packed, but best of all, it introduces us to some amazing characters!

Two teenage boys unwittingly summon an ancient evil entity known as The Blind One by delving into black magic while trying to escape their mundane lives.

Friday the 13th Sequel Update

We’re all kind of marveling at how long it has taken to get a new Friday the 13th film off the ground, but hey, shit happens right? At least we know it is coming and right now our friends over at FridayThe13thFranchise.com are reporting that the film is in the casting progress and gearing up for a spring shoot!

They’re reporting that pre-production is currently under way in hot spot Conyers, Georgia, which is 24 miles 3ast of Atlanta.

“The reason that the production in Conyers is interesting is that Platinum Dunes is scheduled for shooting in that town starting in March and lasting through to May. That leads us to believe a good majority of filming should take place in that area.

”Another interesting bit of information about Conyers is that it is just under 12 miles away from Covington, Georgia, where Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part VI was filmed!”

It’s not much, but at least it’s something. The Crazies director Breck Eisner is at the helm and working from a script by Prisoners‘ Aaron Guzikowski. Earlier last year Platinum Dunes producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form promised the film would sort of be an origins tale.

We shall see.

For many years now fans have been doing their own takes on films featuring their favorite characters, but what sets Halloween: The Night Evil Died apart from the rest is its casting of the bad guy! That’s right, kids… Tony Moran (who played the unmasked Michael Myers in the original film) is back in the overalls and mask for Kohl V. Bladen and Jeffrey J. Moore’s film.

No word yet on just when we’ll be seeing this bad boy, but we do have a look at the new mask they’re working on from artist Marcy Saylor. Halloween: The Night Evil Died picks up where Halloween: Resurrection left off with Michael once again being burned alive, an occasion marked by the mask you see below.

Moran stars alongside Emily Lanelle, Sarah Cortez, Brandon Tyler Russell, Emily Pearse, and Juli Erickson.

Stay tuned for more on this as it comes.

Synopsis:
Following the events of Halloween: Resurrection, Emma (Lanelle) and her friends take a road trip to Haddonfield to meet her great grandmother, Pamela Strode (Erickson). Michael (Moran) returns to put the Myers and Strode family names to rest.

Syfy’s latest endeavor, “The Haunted,” has just landed itself a good addition to its cast as TVLine is reporting that Liam McIntyre has signed on for active duty!

Written by Noga Landau (“Tau,” “The Magicians”), “The Haunted” centers on four adult siblings (played by Steve Kazee, Elizabeth Cappuccino, Lyndsy Fonseca, and David Alpay) who are reunited following their parents’ deaths and must overcome their fractured personal relationships in order to survive the literal ghosts from their past.

McIntyre will play the series-regular role of Reece Mason, a tough, driven detective in the Savannah Police Department who investigates the show’s central murder alongside his partner, Jordan Terry (“Secret Life of the American Teenager’s” DeVaughn Nixon). On the surface Reece is a charming, Southern gentleman, but his personal connection to this case will unearth old tensions and spur Reece to take on anyone who challenges his authority.

Robert Hall and Loyd Cryer Prepping a Nail Gun Massacre

Rob Hall has become a staple in the industry, not just by creating amazing special effects with his company, Almost Human, but also as a filmmaker. It’s been awhile, but Hall is working on a new movie that comes as the most surprising news of the week!

From the Press Release:
Director Robert Hall (Laid to Rest, “Fear Clinic,” MTV’s “Teen Wolf”) has joined forces with Texas Frightmare Weekend founder and producer Loyd Cryer to remake the 1985 cult favorite Nail Gun Massacre.

Cryer had a relationship with the film’s original director, (the late) Terry Lofton, and re-released the original film in 2014 with Code Red Entertainment. When asked about the new version, Cryer said: “Robert Hall and I have been talking about this for a couple of years, and finally we are making it happen. Hall’s film Lightning Bug is a personal favorite, and obviously with the unmatched death scenes in his Laid to Rest series, I found the right guy to bring it to life.”

Hall will direct and produce with Cryer while the script comes courtesy of screenwriter Darren Bevill (Appetites). When asked about the film and any casting choices, Hall said: “I’ve been really fortunate to have amazing casts in all my films despite the budget, and although I can’t reveal anything just yet, Nail Gun will be no different and feature a familiar and stellar cast.”

Hall then commented on whether they would retain the comedic camp tone of the original: “It’s going to be a FUN MOVIE for sure; however, the new screenplay is really smart, and we are pulling back on the camp for sure. It’s an update for today’s demanding audience bringing you WTF superb nail gun kills of course.”

New Images from The Walking Dead Episode 7.09 – Rock in the Road

$

We’re just a few weeks away from the mid-season return of “The Walking Dead” with Episode 7.09, and now we have a few more images to share along with a recap video that you might have missed.

From the Press Release:
The highly anticipated mid-season premiere of the #1 show in all of television among adults 18-49, AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” launches Sunday, February 12th, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. In the debut episode, #7.09, “Rock in the Road,” Rick and the group are led to a new community where they are introduced to its inhabitants and ruler. A familiar face resurfaces.

The first half of Season 7 saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group broken by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), forced to fall under his will and brutally convinced to live under his rules. The second half of the season will focus on preparing for war and gathering the supplies and numbers to take Negan down once and for all.

Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose – to defeat Negan – it won’t come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food, and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.

We’ll meet new survivors in incredible places. We’ll see Rick and the group tested in ways we’ve never seen before. We’ll see treachery from people we trust. Rick is confident as he will see his group and many others band together with the common goal of taking down Negan. But no amount of planning will prepare the group for all-out war with Negan and his army.

Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, “The Walking Dead” reigns as television’s most watched drama for Adults 18-49. “The Walking Dead” tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse and follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. James Cameron on the Alien Franchise

Yes, filmmaker James Cameron is super stoked to work on another proper sequel in the Terminator franchise; but in terms of the Alien universe, yeah, he’s just about done. Recently Cameron sat down with Vulture to give his opinion of the future of the Xenomorphs.

The franchise has kind of wandered all over the map. Ridley [Scott] did the first film, and he inspired an entire generation of filmmakers and science-fiction fans with that one movie and there have been so many films that stylistically have derived from it, including my own Aliens, which was the legitimate sequel and, I think, the proper heir to his film. I sort of did it as a fanboy. I wanted to honor his film but also say what I needed to say. After that, I don’t take any responsibility.

I don’t think it’s worked out terribly well. I think we’ve moved on beyond it. It’s like, okay, we’ve got it; we’ve got the whole Freudian biomechanoid meme. I’ve seen it in 100 horror films since. I think both of those films stand at a certain point in time, as a reference point. But is there any validity to doing another one now? I don’t know. Maybe. Let’s see, jury’s out. Let’s see what Ridley comes up with.

Let me just add to that — and don’t cut this part off, please — I will stand in line for any Ridley Scott movie, even a not-so-great one, because he is such an artist, he’s such a filmmaker. I always learn from him. And what he does with going back to his own franchise would be fascinating.

Interesting, but James, surely you realize that The Terminator franchise has MORE THAN done its fair share of wandering all over the map as well, right? Alien: Covenant arrives on May 19th.
