Don’t Hang Up (2017)

0
0

Starring Gregg Sulkin, Garrett Clayton, Bella Dayne

Directed by Damien Mace and Alexis Wajsbrot

Come on, admit it – we all did it when we were younger, and some people were simply resistant to let it go – I’m talking about the art of the prank phone call, and even after the inception of caller ID and star 69 (sounds filthy) – hell, even now I’m sure it’s damn near impossible to pull off a good phone gag on someone, but co-directors Damien Mace and Alexis Wajsbrot deliver a film that bypasses the “what if” thought and goes straight for the jugular in Don’t Hang Up.

While the premise might seem a bit dated, both Mace and Wajsbrot try their hardest to make an otherwise stale basis somewhat interesting, and deliver moderately in execution. A couple of high-school goons named Brady and Sam (Clayton, Sulkin) are the antithesis of “douchebag” – privileged, immature, and generally the kinds of guys you’d like to shove into traffic if readily available. The movie opens with them phone-pranking a woman into believing that she and her child are in danger from a home invasion, then immediate upload online, and the duo alongside a couple of pals are internet celebrities (sad state we’re living in). So, here we are a short time later, and the brothers-in-douchery are hanging out, pounding suds, and Sam is whining about his girlfriend Peyton (Dayne) giving him the cold shoulder – so what better to do to kill some boredom? Crank up the phone lines, it’s time to screw with people! Their general sense of adolescent euphoria gets cut short when the other end of the phone decides to do a bit of screwing around as well, only something isn’t jovial about this caller – he knows literally everything about his pranksters: name, address, what they’re currently doing at the time…and how to keep their attention locked to his every word. It’s a really nice touch, but the question begs: how much could this person ACTUALLY get away with? Aah, suspension of disbelief: it’s a wonderful thing.

What follows in the film are some paint-by-numbers instances that horror fans could sniff out a mile in advance – some work, some don’t, but it all adds up to the eventual payoff that could blow your mind, or leave you shifting in your seat wondering where that last 80+ minutes you invested in the film went. Our main protagonist is somewhat of an eerie fellow, mask, creepy (yet calm) voice, and large knife in tow. As far as performances go, as much of a couple of “bro-tastic jerkoffs” as they portray, both Clayton and Sulkin deliver believable roles – now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I was feeling bad for their characters during any point in the film, but I can respect their acting talents. Aside from a wonky plot, the usage of camera angles and lighting play a big role in this film, setting it up as a visually impressive view – lots of darkened night shots and video feed here, and it looks very well done. Overall, I’d normally jump all over a film like this, but there were moments where my attention was glued, and times where I just wanted the dynamic duo to get sliced and diced – any way you look at it, this call should at least be answered once…just Don’t Hang Up.

Resident Evil Becomes a Billion Dollar Franchise, But Split Continues to Dominate the Box Office

It’s been a big weekend for horror in theatres as M. Night Shyamalan’s Split (review) continues to keep a copious amount of ass by holding on to the number 1 spot for the weekend. Split took in $26.26 million, dropping just 34% since last week for a total of around $78 million in its first ten days domestically.

The other big story is Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (review). With this last addition to the long-running franchise, the RE flicks have become a billion dollar franchise. Numbers weren’t stellar though as the flick came in third with $13.85 million from 3,104 domestic theaters. This is significant because it was the smallest opening for any film in the franchise since the original which took in $17.7 million in its opening weekend. As expected though the flick did HUGE overseas taking in $64.5 million from 42 international markets.

Sony is reporting that with this latest film the Resident Evil franchise has topped $1 billion globally over six films.

Neo-Parasyte f (Manga Anthology)

Written & Illustrated byNeo-Parasyte f Asumiko Nakamura, Ema Toyama, Miki Rinno, Lalako Kojima, Kaori Yuki, Banko Kuze, Yuuki Obata, Kashio, Yui Kuroe, Asia Watanabe, Mikimaki, Hikaru Suruga, Hajime Shinjo, Renjuro Kindaichi, and Yuri Narushima

Based on Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki

Published by Kodansha Comics

Suitable for ages 16+

Before I start talking about what we’re all here for—Neo-Parasyte f—I want to share a story. I’ve been a voracious reader my entire memorable life. When eating breakfast, I read every single side of the cereal box (including the ingredient list). Do I care about the hundred different kinds of sugar that’s in there? Of course not. I just love to read. So when I read Neo-Parasyte f for a second time, I was not perturbed in the slightest by having to sit down with it again. When I finished reading it that second time, and still had trouble remembering what in the hell happened during the course of the volume? That’s what really started to trouble me.

Neo-Parasyte f is an anthology published by Kodansha Comics that brings together a multitude of talented artists, giving each a chapter to tell a new story in the Parasyte world. Some of the stories are entertaining, some of them are sad, and others are just plain weird. As I said though, they were mostly forgettable.

What made the entirety of Neo-Parasyte f memory-altering in a bad way was the sense that these stories will not withstand the test of time. That taken apart from their inspiration, they are inconsequential. Sure, there has to be a place for books that are not capable of standing alone. But without the Parasyte world to back it up, Neo-Parasyte f sort of flops. In even a few years it wouldn’t be surprising if the amount of people who have heard of Parasyte dwindles. And Neo-Parasyte f will disappear along with that drop in recognition.

This is a really discouraging fact since Neo-Parasyte f is a very well balanced anthology. There are some chapters, like “The Lost Prince,” by Miki Rinno that are extremely well rounded. In this chapter, a young girl named Yuki is infected with a parasite while in the hospital. She immediately recovers from whatever her ailment is and runs home. She dubs the parasite a prince when he saves her from a deadly fall. While Yuki sleeps, the parasite reads her shojo manga (series marketed towards teen girls that focus on romance) and adapts his personality to better please her. As the chapter continues, Yuki eventually finds out that her best friend (Riko) is also parasitized, and has been stalking her. Riko killed Yuki’s entire family, and also kills her crush. This drives Yuki to the edge of her sanity, at which point she allows her parasite to take over her brain completely. What starts as a light-hearted comedy of a chapter ends in brutal revelation and sorrow. The rest of the stories in Neo-Parasyte f balance out the book as a whole in a similar fashion. Some are light-hearted, like the chapter where two parasites cook a recipe from a cookbook and have an epiphany about the human race. Others are dark and brooding like the story involving a selfish girl who ruthlessly pursues her love interest and is eventually killed for it by a parasite.

The art in Neo-Parasyte f is equally balanced. All 15 artists in the anthology have slightly differing styles, which meant my eyes never got bored. The size of the volume is also a great benefit. For $13.99 there are almost 300 pages of material. The height and width of the book are slightly larger than the average manga, which is an enjoyable change. And the color artwork on the cover is a semi-watercolor style with a matte feel to it, so from the exterior it looks and feels expensive.

One other negative about Neo-Parasyte f that I need to mention however, is that the book is slightly less enjoyable if you aren’t already familiar with Parasyte. I have never read the original manga, or watched the anime series. It didn’t prevent me from having a good time reading the anthology, since most of the canon you can pick up pretty easily in the stories. Because of this, I won’t deduct any points from my score, but I still wanted to point it out since there are some inside jokes and references that went over my head.

I went into reading Neo-Parasyte f with a positive attitude. Even though I knew next to nothing about Parasyte, the anthology still piqued my interest. And I wanted to cover it for the Parasyte fans we might have lurking around here at Dread Central. However, after doing my due diligence and reading Neo-Parasyte f a second time, I’m just left feeling disheartened. While categorically, Neo-Parasyte f is a very successfully executed anthology, it fell a little flat in the area of longevity. After two reads, I still struggled to remember specific examples of chapters, and had to flip back through the book just to explain the good ones. Even still, for the price, Neo-Parasyte f is well worth it. Fans of the existing Parasyte universe will especially love the chance to delve back into the terrifying—yet hilarious—world of hosts and their parasites.

In what seems like a no-brainer of sorts, the latest film in the Jeepers Creepers franchise will have some big ties to the original tale of The Creeper.

According to a new synopsis uncovered by Bloody Disgusting from a casting call, the third film will continue the story of Gina Philips’ character from the original film.

Trish Jenner is now a mother of a teenage son named Darry, named after the brother she lost 23 years ago. Trish has a recurring nightmare where her son suffers the same fate as her brother did, killed by the Creeper. Determined to prevent this from happening, Trish, who is now a rich and powerful woman, sets out on a final quest with Jack Taggart Sr. and Jr. to end the Creeper’s reign of terror once and for all. The Creeper fights back in gory glory as its enemies grow closer than ever before to learning the secret of its dark origins.

The film is reported to start production next month with Philips and a returning Jonathan Breck as The Creeper. Victor Salva directs.

Friday the 13th – Filmmakers Looking for Young Jason

0

On the long road to getting the 13th Friday the 13th made, we’ve learned a few things. First and foremost this would be another origin tale of sorts (because, you know, we’ve no idea how any of this all began by now) which is rumored to feature Jason’s dad, Elias Voorhees, for the first time along with a young Jason. Speaking of young Jason…

Here’s the official description of his character which was sent out via Project Casting:

“Male, Caucasian, 12 years old ONLY SEEKING IDENTICAL TWINS W/ TV AND FILM CREDITS. MUST BE UNDER 5 FOOT. NO EXCEPTIONS. Lengthy and awkward. A dark, ominous child, who has severe psychological issues. Must have a very electric and expressive face (you will be painting the scene with your facial expressions), as this role does not speak. YOUNG JASON will grow into the pyscho-killer JASON. SUPPORTING ROLE. MUST BE ATLANTA BASED.”

We wouldn’t read into the whole twins thing, as some sites are, too much as it’s common practice to hire twins for movies given the laws in place and the long filming hours.

The film will be shooting from March 19 to May 4, 2017, under the title Friday the 13th Part 13, but we’re thinking that’s just a temporary moniker. The Crazies director Breck Eisner is at the helm and working from a script by Prisoners‘ Aaron Guzikowski.

Stranger Things Wins SAG Award; David Harbour Delivers Rousing Speech; Winona Ryder Delivers Even Stranger Things Facially

Last night the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards were broadcast, during which actors honored other actors, but the most memorable moment of the evening came when Netflix’s “Stranger Things” won the SAG Award for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.”

Nearly the entire cast was on hand to accept the award, including our favorite supernatural foiling gang along with David Harbour and Winona Ryder. Harbour’s speech was passionate beyond words on a very human level, and it was only accentuated by Ryder’s hilarious facial expressions during his delivery. Not sure what the deal was with that, but damn if it didn’t make for great television! SAG should give them a special award for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Accepting a SAG Award.”

Check out the video and a unique collage put together by Twitter user Hunter Ingram below.

Nails Trailer Hammers its Way Online

0

We’ve been looking forward to the new Irish horror flick Nails for some time now. The flick is getting ready to have its world premiere and we now have the trailer for you! Dig it!

From the Press Release:
Fantastic Films and Kaleidoscope Film Distribution announced today that the new Irish horror film NAILS will have its World Premiere as part of the Audi Dublin International Film Festival (ADIFF), which runs 16-26 February, 2017. This intense and claustrophobic thriller centers on a happily-married track coach and mother, Dana Milgrom, who’s survived a near-death car accident only to find herself paralyzed and trapped inside her own body. Forced to communicate via an artificial voice program and hooked to a breathing machine, she becomes convinced that a terrifying presence called “Nails” exists inside her hospital room. No one believes her – not even her own husband and doctors, who think she’s experiencing a mental breakdown. In the vein of recent films like THE BABADOOK and UNDER THE SHADOW, NAILS is part of a new wave of horror that puts female characters and their emotional lives at the center of the story. The film was financed with support from Bord Scannán na hÉireann / the Irish Film Board.

“NAILS is a truly terrifying and suffocating horror film, and we’re thrilled to premiere Dennis’ debut feature here at ADIFF,” says Festival Director Gráinne Humphreys. “Shauna Macdonald gives a fearless, beautiful performance that reminds me of Mathieu Amalric in THE DIVING BELL & THE BUTTERFLY.” Adds writer/director Dennis Bartok, “Most horror films are about running away – NAILS is the opposite: it’s about being locked inside your own flesh with the terror. I don’t think there’s any other actress who could give the performance Shauna did: her concentration and emotional rawness took the film to a whole different level.”

NAILS is the feature debut from Bartok, who produced & wrote the Lionsgate horror TRAPPED ASHES in 2006, with segments directed by Joe Dante, Ken Russell & Monte Hellman. Bartok recently published the non-fiction book A Thousand Cuts: the Bizarre Underground World of Collectors & Dealers Who Saved the Movies, hailed as one of the Best Film Books of 2016 by the Huffington Post. He’s well known for his work with the American Cinematheque in L.A. and art-house distributor Cinelicious Pics which he co-founded in 2014.

UK-based distributor and sales company Kaleidoscope Film Distribution will be releasing NAILS theatrically and on VOD / SVOD in the U.K. and Ireland later in 2017, dates TBA, and will be representing the film for world sales at the upcoming European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival.

The film stars Scottish actress Shauna Macdonald as Dana Milgrom, which required long hours of make-up to create her graphic injuries and tremendous preparation and focus to portray a character who is paralyzed and forced to communicate via laptop for most of the film. Macdonald is much-loved by genre fans for her role in Nail Marshall’s seminal horror film THE DESCENT (2005) and its sequel THE DESCENT: PART 2 (2009). British stand-up comedian and actor Ross Noble co-stars as Trevor Helms, a nurse’s aide at Hopewell Hospital who slowly comes to believe that Dana’s paranoid visions may be real. Noble first appeared to horror fans in the UK-hit STITCHES (2012), also produced by Fantastic Films, where he portrayed the lead character.

The film was co-written by Tom Abrams and also stars Steve Wall (of Irish band The Stunning), newcomer Leah McNamara in her breakout performance as Dana’s daughter, Gemma, and Richard Foster-King as Nails, with cinematography by James Mather (FRANK) and music by longtime Gary Numan collaborator Ade Fenton.

The producers of the film, Brendan McCarthy and John McDonnell of Fantastic Films, are well known to genre lovers for their recent horror films including LET US PREY, THE HALLOW, THE LAST DAYS ON MARS, STITCHES, THE WAKE WOOD and THE CHERRY TREE. The executive producer of NAILS, Joseph Kaufman, was exec producer of John Carpenter’s 1976 classic ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 along with the 2005 remake starring Ethan Hawke.

NAILS will world premiere at ADIFF on Monday, February 20th, 2017 at 20:45 PM at Cineworld, Parnell Street, Dublin.

Tickets go on sale at 18.30 on 18th January at www.diff.ie, by phone on +353 1 687 7974 or in person at DIFF House & Box Office, 13 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 1.

New Poster to Lure You In

0
0

This week sees the theatrical release of The Lure, and if you need anything to entice you to dig on this tale of flesh-hungry but lovely mermaids, we have a new poster to share!

From the Press Release:
Janus Films is pleased to present Agnieszka Smoczynska’s hallucinatory Polish genre-bender THE LURE, opening theatrically on February 1st at New York’s IFC Center as well as March 3rd at Los Angeles’ Laemmle NoHo and at other dates and venues nationwide.

In this bold, genre-defying horror-musical mashup – the playful and confident debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska – a pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters are drawn ashore in an alternate ’80s Poland to explore the wonders and temptations of life on land. Their tantalizing siren songs and otherworldly aura make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers in the half-glam, half-decrepit fantasy world of Smoczynska’s imagining.

In a visceral twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s original Little Mermaid tale, one sister falls for a human; and as the bonds of sisterhood are tested, the lines between love and survival get blurred. A savage coming-of-age fairytale with a catchy new-wave soundtrack, lavishly grimy sets, and outrageous musical numbers, THE LURE explores its themes of sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with energy and originality.

Horror History: Director Tom McLoughlin Talks Inspiration for Cult Hit One Dark Night and Jason Lives

0

To say we’re fans of Tom McLoughlin around here is a bit of an understatement. Not only did he create one of my favorite films of all time in One Dark Night, he also put some Gothic Universal monster-style fun in the much beloved Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives!

Recently Tom spoke during Roy Finch’s Modern Horror Workshop, one of the many interterm classes at Dodge College, and he shed some light on his influences.

Before filming One Dark Night, McLoughlin visited the Paris Catacombs. “The feeling I got walking through them stuck with me; it left a lasting impression,” he said. “I had a presentation about what the film would be [for investors] and set it to music from The Amityville Horror. I got letters of intent from people, saying that [they] would be interested in working on it if I got the money. Big names, so when investors saw the names, they were interested. The names gave me credibility. I still have a lot of people telling me their grandmothers took them to see it, and it traumatized them.

Luckily Friday the 13th producer Frank Mancuso, Jr., was also a fan of this spooky little gem. Mancuso wanted the next Friday film to be the resurrection of Jason, and who better to do that than a filmmaker with a deep love for the Frankenstein monster?

For his film McLoughlin first watched the others to see what hadn’t been done before. “At the time, it was just a job, one that came and went. I had no idea how popular it would be to this day,” said Tom regarding Jason Lives‘ staying power.

Horrible Imaginings Podcast #167: Talking Video Shop Life with Videosyncratic Author Jon Spira

0

Oh man, when two cineastes decide to have a conversation watch out! It is hard to contain the purest of enthusiasm for movies that erupts when you put me on Skype with my friend Jon Spira! You might remember that from episode 157, when he joined me to discuss his documentary Elstree 1976, which you can click on that link to purchase. It’s also available in Netflix, I feel obliged to mention.

Anyway, a few days back I noticed that Jon wrote an article for Huffington Post called “The Death of DVD will Haunt Us”, the content of which you can probably guess, but it’s worth a read. I shared it on my Facebook page and it started a great conversation and over 100 shares. For us film geeks, this topic is a sensitive one, it seems. Through that Facebook thread, I learned that Jon had written a new book that he was currently selling on Kickstarter called Videosyncratic, which is named after the pair of video stores (or shop, in the UK vernacular) he used to own in Oxford. The book is a memoir all about how the video shop has been firmly rooted in who he has become as a person. I read the entire book in one sitting and loved it. Even if someone’s tastes are not in complete accordance with Jon’s, I think every horror, exploitation, or cult film fan has experienced the outcast phenomenon that their love for movies has created, and the sanctuary we all felt when we used to go to the video stores as kids. Every one of you will appreciate the wit and humor in this book. Some parts are laugh out loud hilarious, and even touching.

We go on a lot about life as a film lover in this episode. It was a joy to record, and I think a lot of you will love listening to it. In fact, it was such a long (and times meandering) conversation, that I had no choice but to cut about 25 minutes out where Jon and I were admiring each other’s big-box VHS tapes and action figures on the Skype video. It is pretty hilarious–we talk about the film A Monster Calls, too. I decided to make that part available to my Patreon Patrons (all subscriber levels)! Hey! That’s an idea! Street Fighter Costumes Coming to Dead Rising 4

They’re two of Capcom’s biggest franchises, so it’s about damn time we had a Street Fighter/Dead Rising crossover of sorts. From January 30, a Street Fighter outfit pack will be available in Dead Rising 4 that will allow you to dress as Zangief, Guile and Cammy as you lay waste to hoards of the living dead. On the same day, two new difficulty modes will be available in the game, which you can read about on the Capcom Blog.

Dead Rising 4 will also be the first game in the series to be available in Germany when it arrives in the country on January 31st. The reason why the other games weren’t released over there was because of the countries absurd censorship regulations on violent video games, so the fact that they’re getting Dead Rising 4 is definitely a step in the right direction.

Fancy investigating a series of murders in an abandoned medical facility? If so, then check out the new game The Crow’s Eye, which is coming soon to Steam.

From the Press Release:
Set against a backdrop of psychological terror, The Crow’s Eye is a first-person puzzle adventure in which you will use your wits to escape the abandoned Medical University of Crowswood, while investigating the mysterious disappearances of students and faculty 20 years earlier.

Investigating murders in an abandoned medical university? Yes, please.

Spanish indie studio 3D2 Entertainment is getting set to release The Crow’s Eye, and they’ve teamed up with Nkidu Games (The Red Solstice, Welkin Road, Breached) to bring this investigative puzzle game with psychological horror elements to Steam.

The new trailer for the game showcases a little of the atmosphere you’ll encounter as you try to find your way out of the abandoned Crowswood University. The game is set for release in Q1 2017.

Synopsis:
Set against a backdrop of psychological terror, The Crow’s Eye is a first-person adventure in which you control a young man trapped in the abandoned Crowswood University, once a reputed medical college. The complex story is narrated through documents, recordings, and radio, which tell the experiences of policemen and professors who, twenty years ago, were involved in a series of mysterious disappearances. In order to escape, he will be forced to investigate his relation to obscure facts and decipher the enigmas that his stay there implies. Along the way he will find more than one reason to remain at Crowswood.

Story:
Year: 1947
The disappearance of four students in the prestigious Medical University of Crowswood forces authorities to shut its doors in order to investigate the surrounding area. Urged on by concerned citizens living in the nearby areas, several police units are enlisted to resolve the case. With no breaks in the case, days go by, and more people go missing–not only students, but policemen and professors at the institution vanish without a trace. Within days, the authorities and the director decide to shut down the university indefinitely, and the case is closed, never to be spoken of again.

Year: 1966
A young man wakes, confused, in Crowswood University and discovers he’s been brought here as part of an experiment. He intends to escape from that dirty and gloomy place full of enigmas, puzzles, and obstacles, which he will have to solve and overcome in order to achieve his goal. Nevertheless, his curiosity, coupled with the manipulation of a macabre scientist, will make him feel the need to discover the truth behind the disappearances and the role that he plays in this whole experiment.

Features:

  • Explore a variety of haunting, mysterious environments in a first-person adventure of investigation and psychological terror.
  • Use your wits–and the items you find scattered through the environment–to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles that you will encounter through nine different levels.
  • Investigate an intense story narrated through recordings, documents, and radio; and piece together the mystery of what happened at Crowswood and why you’re there.
  • Enjoy a haunting original soundtrack that will keep you immersed at all times.

Meet The Girl from Rawblood in March

When it comes to horror authors, few are more chilling than Susan Hill (The Woman in Black, The Man in the Picture), so when we heard Catriona Ward’s The Girl from Rawblood being compared to Hill’s works, well, of course we had to investigate!

Ward’s debut novel is being released March 7, 2017, by Trade Paperback Original and is said to be a fiercely original work of horror fiction that’s well-paced and genuinely disturbing. Evoking a complete and richly imagined world, it combines the genre-bending creativity of David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas, The Bone Clocks) with the Gothic voice of the aforementioned Ms. Hill.

The Girl from Rawblood is already an award winner; it was named Best Horror Novel (the August Derleth Award) at the British Fantasy Awards 2016.

Sound up your alley? You can pre-order The Girl from Rawblood now!

Synopsis:
For generations the Villarcas have died mysteriously… and young. Now Iris and her father will finally understand why.

At the turn of England’s century, as the wind whistles in the lonely halls of Rawblood, young Iris Villarca is the last of her family’s line. They are haunted, through the generations, by “her,” a curse passed down through ancient blood that marks each Villarca for certain heartbreak and death.

Iris forsakes her promise to her father to remain alone, safe from the world. She dares to fall in love, and the consequences of her choice are immediate and terrifying. As the world falls apart around her, she must take a final journey back to Rawblood, where it all began and where it must all end…

From the sun-dappled hills of Italy to the biting chill of Victorian dissection halls, The Girl from Rawblood is a lyrical and haunting historical novel of darkness, love, and the ghosts of the past.
