EFM 2017: Suspiria Remake Wrapped and Headed to Berlin

Sometimes you just want to pretend what’s happening out there really isn’t happening at all, but at the end of the day there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s how lots of fans feel about the remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria, but like it or not, it’s well on its way.

We remain guardedly optimistic… I mean, an “Exorcist” TV show ended up being good so anything can happen.

Deadline reports that Amazon Studios’ Suspiria remake from Italian helmer Luca Guadagnino is heading to the European Film Market next week in Berlin with FilmNation aboard the project for international sales.

The remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian horror classic has been a passion project for Guadagnino for some time. It stars Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Mia Goth and is based on a young American ballet dancer who travels to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover it is something far more sinister and supernatural. She becomes increasingly terrified after a series of gruesome murders ensue and she slowly unravels the dark history of the academy.

Suspiria is written by David Kajganich, who adapts the remake from Argento and Daria Nicolodi’s original script.

Frenesy Film Company, Mythology Entertainment, First Sun Films and Memo Films produce. Guadagnino, Brad Fischer, Kajganich, Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Marco Morabito, Gabriele Moratti, William Sherak, and Silvia Venturini Fendi are producers on the title while James Vanderbilt, Paul Deason, Massimiliano Violante, and Carlo Antonelli exec produce.

Amazon Studios picked up the project last year for worldwide distribution rights and is financing production.

Argento’s original, which was laden with the supernatural, witches, and a lot of blood, marked the beginning of the director’s “Three Mothers” trilogy, which was followed by Inferno (1980) and The Mother of Tears (2007).

Carla Gugino Talks Gerald’s Game

For many years an adaptation of the Stephen King tale Gerald’s Game was thought to be unfilmable due in part to its psychological nature, but Mike Flanagan is more than up to the task. Recently the fine folks over at Den of Geek caught up with the film’s star, Carla Gugino, to get the skinny on the process.

Before we get to that, though… for those unfamiliar with the story, here’s a quick synopsis of the book.

Once again, Jessie Burlingame (Gugino) has been talked into submitting to her husband, Gerald’s, kinky sex games—something that she’s frankly had enough of, and they never held much charm for her to begin with. So much for a “romantic getaway” at their secluded summer home. After Jessie is handcuffed to the bedposts—and Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) crosses a line with his wife—the day ends with deadly consequences. Now Jessie is utterly trapped in an isolated lakeside house that has become her prison—and comes face-to-face with her deepest, darkest fears and memories. Her only company is that of the various voices filling her mind… as well as the shadows of nightfall that may conceal an imagined or very real threat right there with her…

It was one of the hardest, most challenging shoots I’ve ever done, which is saying a lot,” said Gugino. “I’ve definitely chosen some material that’s been really challenging. We shot six weeks in Alabama. I think Mike is absolutely the man for the job. It’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done,” she continued. “I love this woman… you’re dealing with something that has elements of horror, but also is really more of a thriller, in the [vein] of a Misery. And she is also dealing with this childhood sexual trauma with her father, and those are all tricky tones to find together.

Every step of the way, one of the things [Flanagan] said to me, which directors very rarely say, was, ‘I want you to take ownership over this; this is as much yours as it is mine’… I’m really excited about it.

Carel Struycken and Henry Thomas co-star alongside Gugino and Greenwood. Gerald’s Game will premiere on Netflix, but no release date is available at this time.

Bad Robot’s Overlord Delves in Nazi Occultism

Nazis are the ultimate badguys. We love to see them get their comeuppance, whether it be in video games or movies. Some Nazis though… some are far scarier than others. Enter the J.J. Abrams produced film Overlord.

According to Variety, Julius Avery, who directed A24’s Son of a Gun, is set to direct Paramount and Bad Robot’s World War II pic Overlord.

Billy Ray and J.J. Abrams came up with the idea for the story with Ray penning the script. The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith has done a slight polish on the draft with Abrams producing for Bad Robot.

The story follows two paratroopers who are caught behind enemy lines after their plane crashes on a mission to destroy a German Radio Tower in a small town outside of Normandy during the D-Day invasion. After reaching their target, the two paratroopers come to realize that besides fighting off Nazi soldiers, they also must combat against supernatural forces that are a result of a secret Nazi experiment.

The project was first acquired by Paramount in 2007 and has since gained steam following Avery’s attachment. Sources indicate execs have already begun meeting with talent to play the two soldiers.

More as it comes.

For many years Willard and Ben have been giving horror fans the heebie jeebies. Or at least that’s what we’ve been told. Truth is we’re not entirely sure what heebies or jeebies are or how you contract them. We’re hoping there’s a soothing salve out there somewhere… In any event! Yes! Scream Factory just gave an update on when we’ll see these two classics!

From the Scream Factory Facebook page:

We announced last July at Comic-Con that the 1971 rat-infested cult classic WILLARD and its 1972 sequel BEN would be coming to DVD & Blu-ray for the first time in 2017 with much rejoice. Since then we’ve been unusually “crickets” about it because it was taking us a little longer to lock down release dates for a variety of reasons …until now.

We’re happy to report that our official street dates for both are planned for May 16th! We thank you for being patient.

Extras, specs and more details will be announced at a later date. Pre-order both from our site directly and get them both shipped two weeks early.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Sales Off to a Strong Start; Banned Footage Vol. 1 DLC Available Now

It’s only been out for a week, but Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (review) is already well on its way to being a huge success. 2.5 million copies have been shipped to retailers worldwide, with 187,306 units being sold in Japan. In the UK, it debuted at number one on the game sales charts and also had the third highest debut of any game in the entire series. In addition to physical copies, 200,000 digital copies of Resident Evil 7 have also been sold on Steam within its first week. The total sales of the series have now hit 75 million, making it Capcom’s most successful franchise.

Since the original Modern Warfare and other games of its ilk made it seem as though all console gamers wanted was fast-paced multiplayer shooters, publishers got it into their heads that there was no longer a market for AAA horror games. This is unfortunately why Capcom choose to make Resident Evil 5 more of a straight up action shooter with less emphasis on horror elements, and 6 was basically a Michael Bay movie with zombies in it. What I’m getting at is that the strong sales figures for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which takes the series back to its old school horror routes, proves that there is, and always will be, a market for AAA horror games.

If you’ve already breezed through the campaign, then it’s time to download Vol. 1 of the Banned Footage DLC, which looks into the fucked up past of the demented Baker family.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard: TAPE-0 – “Banned Footage” DLC Official Trailer

Banned Footage Vol. 2

– 21: Take part in a twisted card game where the stakes are your life.
– Daughters: Experience the events that unfolded on the night it all started, when the downfall of the Bakers was set in motion.
– Includes the extra bonus content Jack’s 55th Birthday (not compatible with PSVR mode)

Dead By Daylight Stalking its Way onto Consoles

I don’t think anyone will really be surprised by this news, but the multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight will finally be released on consoles later this year, although a specific release date has yet to be announced. This was confirmed via a press release on publisher Starbreeze Studios’ website, which you can read in its entirety below.

Dead by Daylight was released on Steam back in June and went on to be both a critical and financial hit, with sales now exceeding 1.8 million. It proved to be so popular among horror gamers that Starbreeze were later given the license to officially include Halloween’s Michael Myers as a downloadable character. It’s won’t be too long before console owners can finally get in on some of the action.

From the Press Release:
Starbreeze AB and Behaviour Digital have agreed to bring asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight to PlayStation®4 and Xbox One in digital format later this year. Released on PC in June 2016, Dead by Daylight has already sold more than 1.8 million copies on the digital distribution platform Steam and became an instant favourite with streamers on Twitch and other streaming platforms.

“We’re proud of Behaviour Digital’s success with Dead by Daylight and can’t wait to deliver it to consoles together.” said Mikael Nermark, Starbreeze CoO.

”Being able to share Dead by Daylight with console players, many of them counted among our loyal viewers, is very exciting” said Stephen Mulroney, Senior Vice President at Behaviour Digital.

Release date and pricing will be released at a later date.

Development costs relative to the console adjustments will be split equally between the companies and the revenue share model will follow the previous agreement in place between the parties.

Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game in which one crazed killer hunts four friends through a terrifying nightmare. Players take on the role of both killer and survivors in a deadly game of cat and mouse. It’s a Mature Gamer take on the thrills of Hide & Seek. Dead by Daylight is out now and available on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/381210/

Child Eater Hungry for Flesh This March

Have a little bundle of headache that you want to dispose of quickly and efficiently? Good thing for you there’s a Child Eater on the prowl and you’ll come face to snarled tooth with him on March via MVD Entertainment Group.

From the Press Release:
Based on the popular short film with the same name, Child Eater is the directorial debut of Erlingur Thoroddsen and is a creepy, stylish roller-coaster ride inspired by the classic horror films of the 1980’s.The deal was negotiated by Eric D. Wilkinson for MVD Entertainment Group and Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz for Boulderlight Pictures on behalf of the filmmakers.

In Child Eater, little Lucas (Colin Critchley) goes missing from his bedroom in the middle of the night, his babysitter Helen (Cait Bliss) ventures out into the deep, dark woods armed only with a flashlight. But these are no ordinary woods. They were once the home of Robert Bowery (Jason Martin), a serial killer who years ago came for children’s eyes in order to keep himself from going blind. But Robert Bowery was stopped and killed… or was he?

Originally conceived as an award nominated short at SXSW back in 2012, producer Perri Nemiroff shares her excitement in turning it into a full length feature film and it’s 1980’s horror inspiration: “Having grown up in the 80s, we’re undeniably influenced by classic slashers like Freddy, Jason and Michael Myers, and also the tone of their respective films, particularly their ability to deliver powerful scares, but exhilarating and enjoyable ones, too. Child Eater is bigger, badder and scarier and really gave us the chance to subvert genre tropes and truly show horror fans things they’ve never seen before.”

Following its World Premiere at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival that boasted sold out screenings (a second late night screening was added which was sold out as well) in addition to winning four awards at the Fantastically Horrifying Cinema Festival (including Best Film, Best Cinematography and Best Actress), MVD Entertainment Group picked up the film for North American distribution. MVD’s Director of Acquisitions, Eric D. Wilkinson, expressed his excitement about the film: “Like the filmmakers, I too grew up on 80’s horror and immediately fell in love with this movie. Robert Bowery is every bit as scary as Freddy Kruger and in some ways, even more so. After fans watch this film I’m willing to bet they will be sleeping with their closet lights on!”

MVD Entertainment Group has scheduled Child Eater for release on March 28th via VOD, Digital and DVD.

A savage coming-of-age fairytale with a catchy new-wave soundtrack, lavishly grimy sets, and outrageous musical numbers, THE LURE explores its themes of sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with energy and originality.

Don’t Knock Twice
“Knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead…” So goes a disturbing urban legend involving an abandoned house supposedly inhabited by a vengeful, child-stealing witch.

When troubled teen Chloe (Boynton) raps at the door one night, she has no idea the horror she’s about to unleash. Fleeing to the country home of her estranged mother (Sackhoff)—a recovering addict who’s turned her life around to become a famous artist—Chloe must learn to trust the woman who gave her up years ago in order to stop the bloodthirsty, shape-shifting demon stalking them. This wild supernatural shocker delivers a barrage of nonstop jolts and searing nightmare images.

Eloise
Four friends break into the abandoned institution in hopes of finding a death certificate, which will provide Jacob with the rights to a sizable inheritance. While inside the asylum, the group not only finds that the institution houses a horrifying history but also the truth about their own tragic pasts.

They’re shooting in the Eloise Insane Asylum, which was one of the largest mental institutions in the world. What began as one building in Westland, MI, in 1832 rapidly grew into a 78-building, self-sustained city, complete with its own fire and police departments, train station, post office and farms. Eloise closed its doors in 1982 and has since been dormant and left to ruin.

Exclusive Interview with Director Joel Novoa on Day of Reckoning

Fifteen years ago, the world suffered a horrific global disaster when millions of demon-creatures ascended from the bowels of the earth, swarming the entire planet, and feasting on mankind for one full day. Now due to a lunar eclipse they have returned for 24 hours to purge the earth’s population… One family will battle against the odds to not only save themselves but to also seal the breach. At the family’s helm is dad David, played by Jackson Hurst, and he will stop at nothing to protect his teenage son and his ex-wife, whom he still loves. Along the way, they combine forces with survivors played by Barbara Crampton and Raymond J. Barry.

We recently sat down with director Joel Novoa to get the skinny on the flick.

Dread Central: How did this project come to you, and did you have a hand in developing the script?

Joel Novoa: I got the pleasure of meeting Patrick and Shaked from Epic via Michael Reuter, who was an executive producer from Germany on my previous film ID2 and a good friend. They had the project for some time and were looking very intensively for the right director for the film. I met with them and instantly connected to their style, creativity and honest approach. Usually it takes me two days to read a script, as I am very slow. I read this script in 90 minutes, and was very engaged with the emotional story and the opportunity to generate suspense in it. But what convinced me the most was the subtextual message Greg Gieras’ script contained about our human superiority complex and our fragility to the unknown. Also, I like to make films for audiences and this one had the potential to become a crowd pleaser. After realizing more than 900,000 people watched it on the premiere date, I can say I was right about that. I did work with Greg on several drafts of the script after that, and had a very good collaborative process where we brought our ideas to life, was a very fun ride.

DC: Your cast is pretty awesome – can you shed some light on how they came on board?

JN: I give full priority to finding my desired cast and work very intensively in it. I knew Jackson’s work from before, and was very impressed with him in The Mist some years ago. My casting director brought me a broad list of very good and well known actors and my instant favorite was Jackson. We sent him the script and he responded very well to the same elements I did about the script. He watched my other films and was very happy about collaborating with me. He brought very important story notes and observations. With him I hired an actor and a collaborator at the same time. He was fully committed and passionate and was willing always to run that extra mile, do his own stunts, and was so clear about his character that I found story answers in my conversations with him. he truly made this film achieve its maximum character potential. I started chasing Raymond after a short film a friend of mine directed called Winter Light. He was in my mind from the moment I read the script and I was flattered he wanted to play Ted. Same with Barbara, who is already a friend of Epic Pictures. She was mentioned to me as soon as I started as a possibility and without thinking twice I said yes. Totally worth it. Working with these actors was a privilege and also an extremely fun experience. In the midst of the craziness of production, we were always having fun and creating improvised moments. that made the film distinguish and brought realism to it. I was very impressed with Jay-Jay warren too. He brought his character Tyler to life in a way I did not see coming. His ideas were very mature and I took lots of them. It was interesting how at some point, Heather McComb, who plays Laura, Jackson and Jay-Jay actually became a family. They had their own complicity and had a specific role in it. Heather was always the cool mom, who allowed Hana Hayes (Maddy) into the life of this family. The main antagonist was Nick Gomez, who I just worked with again. On set he was super fun, but when cameras turned on he made this whole family shake. The tension on camera was unbelievable. Jackson became the protective lion and Heather the mediator.

DC: What was it like shooting with monsters that are not really there? Any tips or tricks you can share?

JN: This was extremely challenging and also a learning experience for me. First, we always had to take into consideration there was an “invisible force” in the frame. So framing was challenging at first. I created story boards and reference boards with other films and had the actors revise them with me before the scene. They knew what the creatures would look like. However, it wasn’t until the day the film was ready that I was able to finally see how the full frame looked. Sometimes it was funny. The attitude of the team and the cast was very important in this. Instead of judging the process, we were embracing it and everyone was giving their best to use their imagination. I was blessed that our humans were supporting our creatures.

DC: Tell us a little bit about what the “day of reckoning” is and why it is scary.

JN: The day of reckoning is that day were we face our consequences as humans. This day religion, faith and science are put to a test when the unknown comes for us. Perhaps we have dig to far, may have been created by us, but the scary thing is, there is no way back now. They are here, creatures created by our own destruction, by our ambition to go deep down on earth. And when these unknown beasts come for us, there is no knowledge on what they are, how to defeat them. We may be prepared after the first time, or perhaps we have dug even deeper to find a solution and created a bigger problem. Now nothing matters, it is all about finding a refuge, escaping, hiding. For 24 hours it is all about finding a way to survive.

DC: What kinds of monsters and mayhem can horror fans expect to see?

JN: We have absolute mayhem created by these monsters, in fact, five different kind of monsters. All of them were based on combinations of animals and humanoids. Their skin formations are darker, they have seen the light once, and that’s why they can’t survive more than 24 hours outside their space. Some of them are more scary and dark, like the big Assaku or the Jinns, some are more fun like the Gallus, inspired by prototypes of extinct birds and velociraptors.

DC: What is it about the sci-fi/horror genre in particular that keeps you motivated as a storyteller?

JN: I am a big fan of it. The possibility to transmit a message via metaphoric codes, makes it a powerful way to make statements in tough times. It is also fun, entertaining and very creative experience, but it is the human component and the social comment what attracts me to this world particularly.

Color us impressed. What’s old is new again, and leave it to an eagle-eyed fan to point it out. 2014’s It Follows was a horror sensation when released, but maybe that’s because it followed (<– see what we did there?) The Ring, which was equally as well received.

Coming at us via Saban Films is Colm McCarthy’s infection flick The Girl with All the Gifts, an adaptation of M.R. Carey’s same-named novel. It premiered exclusively on DirecTV on January 26 before hitting theaters and VOD on February 24. Check out the new poster below.

The post-apocalyptic thriller stars Gemma Arterton (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Clash of the Titans), Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum, Hot Fuzz), six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close (Guardians of the Galaxy, Albert Nobbs, Dangerous Liaisons), and Sennia Nanua in her breakthrough performance.

The Girl with All the Gifts is set in a dystopian world where a seemingly normal and very intelligent little girl lives in an underground army bunker with other children her age. They are all experimental cases being examined by scientists – led by Dr. Caldwell (Close) – to find a cure for a fungal spore that has infected the planet.

Carey has adapted his novel into a film with an unmatched level of cataclysm,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley. “The Girl with All the Gifts is a sophisticated movie, with McCarthy’s vision and this dynamic cast, and we know that our audiences will be hooked from start to finish.”

The BFI (British Film Institute) and Creative England financed the film, which was produced by Camille Gatin and Angus Lamont. Warner Bros. UK will release the film in the UK.

If you’ve been anxiously awaiting Titan Comics’ upcoming four-issue “sequel” to the Showtime series “Penny Dreadful,” then you’ll be happy to hear that a teaser trailer has been released for Issue 1 of Penny Dreadful: The Awaking. Check it out below!

About Penny Dreadful: The Awaking:
Written by “Penny Dreadful” TV series co-executive producer Chris King, with interior art from Jesús Hervás (Sons of Anarchy) and colors by Jason Wordie, this new comic sees Ethan Chandler (portrayed by Josh Hartnett in the series) unable to move on. As he searches desperately for meaning in a world without Vanessa, ancient words echo across the centuries, and he is called on once again to take up arms against the creatures crawling out of the night.

The BAFTA Award-winning “Penny Dreadful” TV show — created, written, and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, Gladiator, Skyfall, Spectre) — features classic characters from Victorian Gothic literature and a host of brand-new characters, including Vanessa Ives, Sir Malcolm Murray, Frankenstein’s Monster, Sembene, and Mina Harker.

Titan Comics’ Penny Dreadful #1: The Awaking comes with six fantastic covers to collect from artists including Stephen Mooney (Half Past Danger), Rob Davis (The Motherless Oven), Shane Pierce (Judge Dredd, Vikings), and Louie De Martinis (Penny Dreadful prequel mini-series) and also two incredible connecting photo variant covers.

Penny Dreadful #1: The Awaking hits comic stores and digital platforms on April 5, 2017.

“Fear the Walking Dead” has its share of detractors, but whether we want it or not, the show is returning for a third season later this year, and some guest casting news has arrived.  As a fan of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” I have to say it has me more than a little excited…

Per TVLine, “Buffy” alum Emma Caulfield (pictured below) will be joining the series during the upcoming Season 3.  And that’s about all we know so far; the network declined to reveal the length of her stint, the identity of her character, or whose storyline she would impact although the site guesses that she’ll be a new villainess who is supposed to affect Nick (Frank Dillane) and Luciana (Danay Garcia) in particular.

Stay tuned… as soon as more details are available, we’ll be sure to let you know!
