Eloise (2017)

0
0

Starring Eliza Dushku, Robert Patrick, Chace Crawford

Directed by Rob Legato

Greed can drive people to do some downright dumb stuff – the lust for power, status, or in the case of Rob Legato’s latest, Eloise, money is the determining factor for a man who can’t leave well enough alone…and that gluttonous desire for financial security just might be his undoing.

Let’s get right down to the bone of this (unfortunately) less-than-impressive shocker: Jacob (Crawford) is a man who’s just learned that his dearly-departed, estranged daddy has left him quite the boatload of an inheritance. His undetermined past has led him to a point where even he’s not sure what the next day will bring, but with some heavy greenbacks at his disposal, his fortune’s definitely looking up. Only issue is that he’s got to retrieve his late aunt’s death certificate to prove that he’s his pop’s last surviving relative – not so much of a problem now is it? Yeah…well here’s the hook: it turns out that Jacob’s aunt passed away in her later years while confined to a now condemned mental institution called Eloise. In all actuality, not all of the grounds have been closed off – out of the original 78 buildings, only 4 remain open, and the devious Dr. Brice (Patrick) still conducts “experiments” from time to time, and NO ONE at the institution wants to assist Jacob in his quest to acquire the certificate of death. Upon a short bit of contemplation, Jacob rounds up a small posse consisting of his best bud (Brandon Jackson), a historian (PJ Byrne) who knows quite a bit about the building’s history, and his sister (Dushku). Looking like a clandestine-stealth mission of sorts, the group makes their way to the closed off asylum to grab the documentation, and skulk out like nothing ever happened…because everything in these movies always goes off without a hitch, doesn’t it?

After the band of pals enters the institution, an otherwise evil sense of apprehension overwhelms them all, playing tricks with their minds, and generally making this simple snatch-and-grab into a complete cluster f**k. The unfortunate onus here is on both the execution between plot-direction and the non-existent scares – a double-negative for the hopes of a successful fright-flick. The characters act as if they were just tossed into the mix, and the possibility of rooting for any one of them is just not there, and while Robert Patrick is the saving grace as the demented doc, not even the T-1000 can rescue this sinking ship from the depths of obscurity. Keep your eyes peeled as this one will more than likely be lining the $5 bin of your local Wal-Mart in the near future.

Arrow Aims for a Blu-ray of Takashi Miike’s Dead or Alive Trilogy

Fans of Takashi Miike will be THRILLED to learn that one of his most storied set of films, the Dead or Alive Trilogy, are getting set to hit Blu-ray in grand fashion thanks to Arrow on March 14th. Read on for details.

From the Press Release:
Beginning with an explosive, six-minute montage of sex, drugs and violence, and ending with a phallus-headed battle robot taking flight, Takashi Miike’s unforgettable Dead or Alive Trilogy features many of the director’s most outrageous moments set alongside some of his most dramatically moving scenes. Made between 1999 and 2002, the Dead or Alive films cemented Miike’s reputation overseas as one of the most provocative enfants terrible of Japanese cinema, yet also one of its most talented and innovative filmmakers.

In Dead or Alive, tough gangster Ryuichi (Riki Takeuchi) and his ethnically Chinese gang make a play to take over the drug trade in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district by massacring the competition. But he meets his match in detective Jojima (Show Aikawa), who will do everything to stop them.

Dead or Alive 2: Birds casts Aikawa and Takeuchi together again, but as new characters, a pair of rival yakuza assassins who turn out to be childhood friends; after a botched hit, they flee together to the island where they grew up, and decide to devote their deadly skills to a more humanitarian cause.

And in Dead or Alive: Final, Takeuchi and Aikawa are catapulted into a future Yokohama ruled by multilingual gangs and cyborg soldiers, where they once again butt heads in the action-packed and cyberpunk-tinged finale to the trilogy.

Each of them unique in theme and tone, the Dead or Alive films showcase Miike at the peak of his strengths, creating three very distinct movies connected only by their two popular main actors, each film a separate yet superb example of crime drama, character study, and action film making.

Special Features:

  • High Definition digital transfers of all three films
  • Original stereo audio
  • Optional English subtitles for all three films
  • New interview with actor Riki Takeuchi
  • New interview with actor Sho Aikawa
  • New interview with producer and screenwriter Toshiki Kimura
  • New audio commentary for Dead or Alive by Miike biographer Tom Mes
  • Archive interviews with cast and crew

Corin Hardy Is Having Nun of the Conjuring Spinoff

Nuns, man. They’re one of my three irrational fears. Needless to say, the one featured in The Conjuring 2 had me crawling out of my skin. We knew there would be more to come, and now we have a director in the chair to bring it!

According to Deadline, director Corin Hardy (The Hallow) is at the altar with New Line on The Nun, the second spinoff to the hit genre film The Conjuring. Scripted by Gary Dauberman and James Wan and produced by Wan and Peter Safran, the film gives front and center treatment to the demonic nun who menaced Vera Farmiga’s character throughout The Conjuring 2. This is the second spinoff after Annabelle, which has a sequel bowing August 11. The Conjuring universe is quickly becoming one of the biggest horror franchises, already grossing a collective $897 million worldwide.

This will be the next film directed by Hardy, who has been in long development on the remake of The Crow, which now has Jason Momoa attached and needs to land at a studio after finally shaking loose from Relativity.

It’s time to enter an age undreamed of once again, because Conan Exiles has now launched on Steam Early Access. It’s still an early work in progress, so don’t expect to see the full game for some time yet.

Brutal violence was pretty much an everyday aspect of life in the Hyborian Age (jump to 1:04 in the last video below to get an idea of the savage combat system), but the devs have gone the extra mile when it comes to NSFW content by allowing you to change the genital size of your character. I didn’t believe it at first, but PC Gamer’s Chris Livingston uploaded a video on Twitter of this pretty bold feature. If you’re easily offended, I suggest you don’t look at the following tweet.

When you’re not playing with what you’ve got down below, there’s tons of things to see and do within the vast open world of Conan Exiles, so even in its currently unfinished state, expect this to dominate your social life. In addition to interacting with NPCs and embarking on side-quests, you’ll also be able to summon kaiju-sized god avatars to crush your enemies. Looks like this could be the best Conan game since the oceans drank Atlantis.

Build anything from a humble abode to a sprawling city, then go out and conquer the lands of your enemies through savage, combat or possess the towering avatar of your god and smite them with righteous fury.

Conan Exiles is available on Steam at a 29.99$ Early Access price. A special edition is also available at 59.99$ serving up a range of exclusive Conan the Barbarian digital items (and a physical t-shirt, shipping and handling included) which celebrates the life and legacy of his creator Robert E. Howard. The game can be purchased via Steam and www.conanexiles.com and is available in 11 different languages, including Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

“After over twenty-four years in the business and over thirty titles released, we are excited to be launching our very first Early Access game,” says Funcom CEO Rui Casais. “We are incredibly proud of what the game has to offer from day one, but development on an Early Access game is an ongoing process and we look forward to be working side by side with the community making sure we introduce the content, features, and improvements that realizes the full potential of Conan Exiles. This is the start of a true adventure!”

Funcom also launched the new website for Conan Exiles today on www.conanexiles.com , where players can also access the latest news as well as information on what the developers will be bringing to the game in the next few updates.

New Show Cooks Up a Last Meal

Described as “Dinner for 5 meets Beetlejuice meets The Addams Family”, the new series “Last Meal” will launch in the Spring, and you can get all the details on this crazy new show in the following press release.

From the Press Release:
From the creative minds of Portland restaurateurs Aaron & Jessica Grimmer (The Picnic House, Barlow, High Noon), in collaboration with co-directors Courtney Eck and Jordan Firstman of Two Penguins Productions, comes LAST MEAL, an innovative digital series that is one part comedic cooking show, one part celebrity interview, and one part campy indie horror. Think “Dinner for 5 meets Beetlejuice meets The Addams Family”. Riffing off of the increasing popularity of celebrity interviews and cooking shows, LAST MEAL revels in the quirkiness of its dark humor. LAST MEAL was shot entirely on location at Blackberry Castle in Portland, OR. The trailer launches today, with the entire first season of LAST MEAL slated for digital release in the Spring of 2017.

LAST MEAL surveys the deadly dinner parties of Aaron & Jessica Grimmer. Aaron, the son of the Grim Reaper, has recently taken over the family business after his father’s retirement. With the support of Jessica, his fashion-forward, emotionally quirky spouse, Aaron infuses his father’s more traditional fatal approach with a little class and pizzazz by inviting his famous victims…ermm, “guests”…to elaborate dinner parties at their residence at Blackberry Castle. Assisted by their loyal butler (Phillip), personal chef (Casey), and resident mixologist (Tom), the Grimmers honor their unsuspecting guests with food, drink, and heartfelt conversation before creatively- if not always painlessly- helping them meet their fate.

Each episode of the first season features indie artists/musicians like comedian/actress Sabrina Jalees (Transparent, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, MTV Showcase), musicians Brent Knopf (El Vy, Ramona Falls) and Hutch Harris (The Thermals), and graphic novelist Nicole J. Georges (Calling Dr. Laura, Invincible Summer). The combined social media following of our first season guests is over 200,000 fans.

“LAST MEAL started with the simple idea of highlighting delicious food and delicious drinks in an innovative and engaging way, but the project really took on a life of its own,” says co-creator Jessica Grimmer. “It’s ended up being a perfect way to highlight amazing creatives, while delving into deep and meaningful conversations. We both celebrate our guests’ lives and work…and then we kill them.”

For more delectable deaths, subscribe and follow the series socially on: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

About LAST MEAL: Aaron and Jessica Grimmer are currently running the “family business”…but doing it with a “twist” or a knife as it were. Each week, Aaron, the grim reaper’s son, and his fashion forward wife, Jessica, entertain and interview remarkably talented guests before “killing” them in an absurdly campy way…all while dining and drinking some of the most beautiful and strange dishes and cocktails imaginable. Last Meal riffs off the popularity of celebrity interviews and cooking shows in a quirky, comedic indie style…all in about 9 minutes. Think “Dinner for 5” meets “Beetlejuice” meets “The Addams Family”. The first season encompasses 6 main episodes and 13 ancillary episodes featuring mixology tutorials and behind the scenes footage. DC’s Shudder Pick of the Weekend – Sadako vs. Kayako

With Rings haunting theatres this week, this one comes as a bit of a no-brainer as long as you know what to expect. Sadako vs. Kayako isn’t your traditional “versus” movie. Yes, the two titans eventually tangle, but that’s the smallest part of the experience.

Instead this film plays like a new entry into each franchise which ultimately comes together to make something new. It’s not about who fights whom as much as it is which entity’s curse is more deadly. With expectations in check and a love for a hefty dosage of Japanese weirdness, this flick is nothing short of a good time.

Sadako vs. Kayako is streaming now exclusively on Shudder.

For more info visit the official Shudder website, “like” Shudder on Facebook, and follow Shudder on Twitter and Shudder on Instagram.

Hideo Nakata’s Ring and Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge are known worldwide as two of the most terrifying and groundbreaking horror films ever made. To this day, horror fans debate: “Which of the two is truly scarier?” and “Whose curse is stronger, Sadako’s or Kayako’s?” No one ever thought that these questions would get answered, let alone think that we would ever see these infamously horrifying demons face off. At long last, Sadako vs. Kayako brings Ring’s and The Grudge’s two forces of evil into the ring for the ultimate grudge match.

Related Story: Exclusive Interview with Elly Nanami (Sadako) and Runa Endo (Kayako) on Sadako vs. Kayako

Responsible for this franchise-blending is director/screenwriter Koji Shiraishi, who is known for creating unconventional spiritual and supernatural scenes in films such as The Curse, Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman, and the Kowasugi series. Now, he brings the characters from Ring and The Grudge back to the big screen as he delivers viewers a wildly fun, tongue-in-cheek thrill ride that finally answers the question: Whose curse is stronger?

Conan Stevens Leads the Dead Squad

0

Standing at over two meters tall, Conan Stevens is certainly a force to be reckoned with. The giant actor is known for his roles as the titular monster in Man-Thing, Bolg in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and as the brutish warrior Gregor Clegane, AKA The Mountain, in the first season of “Game of Thrones”. He’ll next be be appearing in the ’80s throwback Dead Squad (Facebook), which begins filming next month in Bali, Indonesia.

Dead Squad will be set in a mysterious tropical paradise that would be an ideal vacation spot, if it wasn’t filled with bloodthirsty monsters, one of which will likely be played by Stevens. It also stars Jonathan Looper, Elizabeth Morse and Stephen Dixon, and will be directed by Dominik Hauser.

Synopsis:
‘Dead Squad’ is an exciting throwback to schlock horror films of the early 80s, involving a group of young people on holiday in a tropical paradise who become lost in the jungle while on a river rafting trip and happen upon ancient ruins filled with unimaginable snarky horrors.

Rings (2017)

0
0

Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez

Starring Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, and Vincent D’Onofrio

If you were a teenager in the early 2000’s, you remember the first time you saw The Ring. Everyone I know has some kind of story about the movie, white knuckle for the next seven days out of fear that the impending doom foretold in the film might find them as well. It spawned a whole generation of prank, “seven days,” phone calls. For some, it would launch an interest in J-horror and Japanese culture on par with anime nerds. Personally, it’s the film that got me into horror; at a time when I thought that horror films were just those weird scary things my mom didn’t let me watch, The Ring opened my eyes to a whole new world.

Now of course, you shouldn’t be surprised that a sequel twelve years after the last installment is not good. Out of reverence for the original, I held out a faint sliver of hope that this film might just buck the trend. But no, Rings is all of the shit you expect it to be. It’s an uninspired, cheap ripoff of the original, that beat for beat tries to copy The Ring without any of the soul or charm.

Which is sad, because there’s a good movie nestled here in the first twenty minutes. At the start of the film, the curse is brought back into society by a college professor (Johnny Galecki) who stumbles upon the cursed VHS at a flea market. Rather than cowering in fear over the spectral images, he becomes fascinated with the scientific implications of it. If this cursed tape exists, surely it’s evidence of the physical soul? To research further, he enlists the help of his students, who relay their experiences to him before being relieved by a “tail,” kicking the curse-can down the road another seven days. If you ever saw the short film Rings (2005), this will all sound familiar.

Now that right there is a movie I want to see. For some reason, this premise is completely abandoned in the first act. It only serves to set the stage, serve up our second death, and be forgotten about. There’s a whole great idea here, room to expand on the moral implications and watch as the experiment spirals out of control, but nope. Instead we get yet another origin story. Because fuck me, we didn’t get that already with The Ring 2, right?

By the time the film moves into the second act origin story, it had lost me. Protagonist Julia (Matilda Lutz) is some kind of chosen one, whose special version of the video gives her visions that no one else has. Why does she have these visions? What makes her special? Well you’re going to have to guess, because Rings sure as hell never explains it.

Another thing that Rings chucks out the window along with the interesting premise and sensical plot is the whole, “seven days,” thing. You know, the thing that makes a Ring movie a Ring movie. Without that structure, Rings is just another ghost movie. The timeline is what made the original so great. What was essentially a mystery thriller, The Ring always felt tense due to the impending deadline. Samara was a relentless force. No matter how close you got to the truth or how far you ran, she was still coming for you. Now, Samara just pops up whenever the plot needs it.

There’s so much wrong with this film, but it would be hard to go into that without getting into spoilers. So I’m going to shift gears into the few things this movie did right. First and foremost, this is an acceptable PG-13 horror film. This is nowhere near as good as the original, but if you’re 15 and looking for a date movie, this is fine. There are some actually decent scares, and the visual design replicates the dark wet palate of the original. There was a particularly good shot at the beginning that gave me hope that the film might not suck. The flashback/vision sequences are nice, if not all ruined by cheap jump scares.

Vincent D’Onofrio was also fantastic, showing up for a while to basically fill the role Brian Cox did in The Ring. His performance is subtle, menacing, and a league ahead of the lead actors. Matilda Lutz is distractingly bad. Her accent is prevalent throughout, and she delivers her lines as though the script were nailed to the forehead of whoever she’s talking to. Co-star Alex Roe is equally stiff, but his entire character is just “hot college dude.” With writing like this, it’s hard to tell if he just had nothing to work with.

Rings is the worst kind of sequel, hollowly mimicking the source material without any of the integrity that made the original work. Though it technically exists in the same universe as the first two films (they are never mentioned, and the plot runs roughshod over what was established in The Ring 2), this feels like a reboot. There’s no reason this film was made other than to try to serialize the franchise. This is a transparent attempt to try to bring Samara back so they can make even more sequels.

I have no idea why they thought retooling this franchise into vapid teen-bait was a good idea. If you really loved The Ring and just want to see more Samara, just rewatch The Ring. It holds up incredibly well, and is still miles more frightening than Rings. If you never saw the original, you have no reason to flock to the theater to see Rings. If you need to watch a PG-13 ghost movie because you’re parents won’t take you to R films, then I guess Rings is a step above The Bye Bye Man.

The main reason why people like myself gravitate towards ‘underground’ horror is because you can guarantee that, almost every time, the filmmakers have 100% creative control.  That doesn’t mean to say there isn’t a lot of generic crap out there as well, but if you’re willing to do some digging and seek out these DIY filmmakers, you will find a lot of unique little oddities that brim with originality and seduce with their charms.  Which brings us to the topic of discussion: Romeo’s Distress.

Romeo’s Distress is the debut feature from writer/director/actor Jeff Frumess and it’s a prime example of just how brilliant the horror which creeps beneath the surface can be.  Part John Waters, part David Lynch, part Gothic Shakespearean tragedy, part post punk odyssey, it tells the story of James (Anthony Malchar), a young man who’s madly in love with a girl (who doesn’t feel the same way), but her father and brother don’t approve of him and are more than willing to take extreme measures to ensure he doesn’t come anywhere near her.  Imagine Romeo and Juliet, only if Juliet wasn’t as keen as her lover.

The performances are surprisingly good across the board, especially considering most of the cast in films this DIY tend to be family and friends.  Frumess even cast his grandparents in minor roles for this one, and they sell their parts with enthusiasm and conviction.  Jeffrey Allan Solomon (who’s starred in a number of indie flicks) is also impressively menacing as the disapproving father, while Malchar is an engaging, sympathetic protagonist (even if he is a bad sort by societal standards).

The initial drawing factor of Romeo’s Distress is the mood, which feels constantly offbeat and dreamlike throughout, The film is shot almost entirely in black and white, which isn’t just a cool stylistic choice aesthetically, but it also captures the head state and skewered worldview of our protagonist, who isn’t quite at one with reality for most of the proceedings.  The movie maintains its unusual aura at all times, but as the story unfolds and revelations are made, what we get is a tale which explores the dark side of love that’s actually quite touching.  If you’ve ever had your heart broken, it might even give you a case of the feels.

At the same time, the film is not without its twisted moments either, and the surreal qualities do possess the power to unsettle occasionally. But there is a rainbow of emotions on display here;  Frumess has opted to craft a surreal psychological horror experience, in a world populated by oddball characters which despite its quirky nature, contains some raw human themes most of us can relate to at some point in our lives – loss, heartbreak, loneliness, etc – and as a result, transcends genre barriers. Romeo’s Distress isn’t one particular thing, and therefore it might turn out to be everything you’ve been looking for if you’re the type of film fan always on the look out for something a little bit different.

Although not a musical, Romeo’s Distress is driven by musical beats, featuring songs from the finest punk and death rock acts including T.S.O.L. and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.  The film’s title is a reference to the Christian Death song of the same name after all, and it wears its musical inspirations on its sleeves.  For some filmmakers, music is one of the most vital components of their movies; Quentin Tarantino is renowned for drawing inspiration from his vinyl collection when he’s penning a script so he can find the beat of his story, and you get a similar vibe from Romeo’s Distress.  The song selection is specific, intentional and the doomy, beating heart of the entire movie.

Romeo’s Distress is the personification of a passion project, a smorgasbord of influences ranging from avant-garde cinema, Gothic literature, punk rock and more.  However, despite Frumess’ loving odes on display like a badge of honor, he’s refined them in such a way that his debut feature is its own beast.  This movie certainly isn’t for everyone, but there is no denying that Frumess is an emerging talent with an uncompromising vision, and those are the filmmakers the horror genre needs more of.

The film recently won the Best Screenplay Award at the Macabre Faire Film Fest and will be heading to more festivals later this year.  If you want to stay updated, then head on over to the Facebook page for updates.

Super Bowl Scares: 5 Great Horror Movies Featuring Ex-NFL Players

0

Horror and football aren’t exactly common bedfellows (horror sports movies is an untapped genre we need to see milked for all it’s worth), but that doesn’t mean to say they’re worlds apart either.  Throughout the years, players of the great game have made the jump to Hollywood and, as such, occasionally found their way into our beloved genre fare.

Although footballers turned actors tend to be more at home in action and comedy flicks, a handful have featured in some fine scare fare (usually with action elements), and with the Super Bowl just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to look back at five of the best genre flicks featuring ex-NFL stars, whether in substantial roles or quick cameos.  No doubt most of you will agree that this selection of movies featuring former stars of the field is the cinematic equivalent of scoring the winning touchdown.

It is surprising that horror and football haven’t collided more often, however.  It is a sport where overgrown monsters manhandle each other after all, and Momma says it’s the Devil.  OK… enough Waterboy references.  Let’s get on with the show.

5) Terry Crews – Inland Empire (2006)

Terry Crews

Terry Crews has become such a big player in Hollywood that it’s easy to forget he once sported a football helmet, but his career included stints with the Rams, the San Diego Chargers, the Washington Redskins, and the Philadelphia Eagles.  Plus, he was in Adam Sandler’s The Longest Yard remake in 2005, a powerful story of inmates of a prison rising against authority by beating the guards in a ball game.  In the movie he played Cheeseburger Eddie, and that’s his best contribution to the sport ever.

Crews’ career has seen him appear in a number of tentpole action blockbusters and comedies, including Idiocracy (2006), Terminator Salvation (2009) and The Expendables series, but he did enter horror territory for a brief moment in 2006 with a “blink and you’ll miss it” appearance in David Lynch’s Inland Empire.

Crews’ role in Lynch’s surreal nightmare is nothing to write home about, but he was a part of the movie in a brief role, so he makes the list.  If you want to see him in some real horror, however, you can always check out The Ridiculous 6, which is horrific in its own right…

4) Bubba Smith – Gremlins: The New Batch (1990)

Bubba Smith’s NFL tenure lasted for nearly a decade, and during that time he won a Super Bowl, appeared in the Pro Bowl twice, and was a first team All Pro for the 1971 season. His playing days would see him don a jersey for the Baltimore Colts from 1967-1971, the Oakland Raiders from 1973-1974, and the Houston Oilers from 1975-1976 before he made the jump to acting in 1979.

Best known for playing Moses Hightower in the Police Academy movies, a role he reprised in all but one of the sequels, he would also appear in various films and television shows, including the overlooked action movie Black Moon Rising written by the one and only John Carpenter and starring Tommy Lee Jones.

His one foray into horror came in Joe Dante’s fearsome critter caper Gremlins: The New Batch in a cameo appearance as himself.  While far from the most substantial part on the list, we can’t ignore the fact that an ex-footballer starred in an underrated sequel to one of the best movies of all time now, can we?

3) Jim Brown – The Running Man (1987)

Jim Brown is an NFL legend. During his career he led the rushing touchdown charts five times, won a championship, featured in nine Pro Bowls, and won the NFL MVP award four times. He was the 1957 Rookie of the Year and a part of the 1960s All-Decade Team as well as the 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. All in all, a pretty gosh darn successful career.

Brown made the jump to acting a couple of years before he retired from the sport that made him famous. In 1967 he would star alongside manly-man acting legends Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine, John Cassavetes, and Donald Sutherland in the western The Dirty Dozen before landing a starring role in the 1970 war adventure film Dark Side of the Sun, which is a favorite of Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. In the 1970s he would become a star of several Blaxploitation movies, and in the 1990s he’d gain mainstream recognition starring alongside Al Pacino in Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday (1999). However, some of you might fondly remember him from Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! in 1996 or for lending his voice talents to Joe Dante’s excellent Small Soldiers in 1998. But The Running Man is where it’s at when it comes to Brown’s filmography…

Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, The Running Man stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards, a wrongly convicted prisoner in a near future thrust into a deadly game show for the public’s entertainment. Mr. Brown plays Fireball in a fun supporting role.

The Running Man is turning 30 this year, and its memory still burns brightly in genre cinema. Rob Zombie’s 31 contains some of its DNA by borrowing from its concept, and the socio-political subtext has proven to stand the test of time with articles emerging recently discussing how it predicted the contemporary political upheaval being felt right now. But putting all of that to one side for a moment and taking it as a slice of entertainment, The Running Man is a kick-ass sci-fi action movie that stands the test of time because it’s good ol’ fashioned violent fun.

2) Carl Weathers – Predator (1987)

Weathers’ NFL career was brief, playing only a handful of times as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders in the 1970-71 season.  In 1971 he would join the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and play a further 10 games.  In 1973 he would retire from the sport and pursue acting, excelling at the craft almost from the get-go.

One of Weathers’ earliest roles saw him appear alongside fellow ex-footballer Fred “The Hammer” Williamson and Pam Grier in the marvelous Bucktown (1975).  He would also appear alongside Grier again that same year in Friday Forster.  His big break would arrive in 1976, when he starred opposite Sly Stallone in Rocky as Apollo Creed, which is the role he’s arguably most associated with to this day.

However, in 1987 came Predator, an action-packed rumble in the jungle and one of the greatest things to ever happen to this world.  His handshake/arm wrestle with Arnie is one of the most memorable moments in the history of motion pictures, and his performance in the film is more than up to scratch.  Weathers has a significant part in the movie until poop hits the fan and we’re left to the final showdown between the Austrian Oak and the extraterrestrial hunter with the Rastafarian locks.

1) Fred Williamson – From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

During his football career Fred “The Hammer” Williamson was renowned for his hard hitting tackles and unmatched charisma.  A self-promoter, he would often trash talk upcoming opponents and back it up on the field, and he enjoyed eight pro seasons as a player before retiring in 1967 and making the jump to acting in 1970.

Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, Williamson was the lead star in several Blaxploitation movies and a frequent collaborator of the legendary Larry Cohen. If you want to see Williamson at his best, hunt down Black Caesar (1973), but his filmography boasts countless gems including Bucktown (1975), Inglourious Basterds (1978), and Vigilante (1983). He’s no stranger to genre fare either and can be found in Italian post-apocalyptic gems like The New Barbarians (1982), 1990: The Bronx Warriors (1982), and Warriors of the Lost World (1983). He was a great football player, but as a cult actor he’s one of the best.

However, without a doubt, the best movie Williamson has ever been a part of is Robert Rodriguez’s masterpiece From Dusk Till Dawn. Based on a script from Quentin Tarantino (who also stars), the crime/action/horror hybrid follows two criminal brothers on the run from the law who decide to hole up in a biker bar run by vampires. Who am I kidding? You all know this movie by heart…

In the film Williamson plays Frost, a ‘Nam vet and all-round bad ass who steals the show with his war flashbacks before turning into one mean bloodsucker. It’s a terrific performance from The Hammer, even though it’s only in a supporting role. He gets to tear it up alongside other great actors like George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, and Tom Savini, which is essentially a cinematic dream team.

New The Walking Dead Season 7B Teaser Fights for the Future

0
0

A new teaser for the upcoming return of “The Walking Dead” has popped up online, and if you act fast, you can check it out right here.  It’s not an official AMC video so we’re not sure how long it will last, but it does show fan favorite Carol (Melissa McBride) apparently getting her groove back along with a few other quick peeks at what’s ahead.

About “The Walking Dead” Season 7B:
The highly anticipated mid-season premiere of the #1 show in all of television among adults 18-49, AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” launches Sunday, February 12th, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. In the debut episode, #7.09, “Rock in the Road,” Rick and the group are led to a new community where they are introduced to its inhabitants and ruler. A familiar face resurfaces.

The first half of Season 7 saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group broken by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), forced to fall under his will and brutally convinced to live under his rules. The second half of the season will focus on preparing for war and gathering the supplies and numbers to take Negan down once and for all.

Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose – to defeat Negan – it won’t come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food, and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.

We’ll meet new survivors in incredible places. We’ll see Rick and the group tested in ways we’ve never seen before. We’ll see treachery from people we trust. Rick is confident as he will see his group and many others band together with the common goal of taking down Negan. But no amount of planning will prepare the group for all-out war with Negan and his army.

Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, “The Walking Dead” reigns as television’s most watched drama for Adults 18-49. “The Walking Dead” tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse and follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The series is executive produced by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero, and Tom Luse.

Following the mid-season premiere, viewers can catch an all-new episode of the live after-show “Talking Dead,” featuring series star Khary Payton and executive producer Greg Nicotero at 10:13 p.m. ET/PT.
