Looking for something different to do this year on Valentine’s Day? Well, if a film described as “an eerily intriguing, impressive thriller” sounds up your alley, why not spend the holiday with a few Sisters of the Plague?

The new horror film arrives on VOD and DVD February 14th courtesy of BrinkVision (pre-order here); read on for the trailer and a few more details.

From the Press Release:
BrinkVision is releasing the horror thriller SISTERS OF THE PLAGUE on VOD and DVD February 14th. The film provides solid performances by Josephine Decker (Rosehill, Loves Her Gun) and Isolde Chae-Lawrence as a couple in the French Quarter of New Orleans. It’s rooted in the Southern culture and captures the feel of the American South.

Sisters of the Plague is part ghost story, occult thriller, and demonic possession tale. It’s directed by Jorge Torres-Torres (Shadow Zombie), who wrote the film along with co-writer Jason Banker (Toad Road).

Synopsis:
Jo (Decker) enjoys leading haunted house tours around New Orleans. But when her father moves into the house she shares with her girlfriend, terrifying supernatural things start really happening. Seeking a medium’s help, Jo finds she is facing something way beyond her control. Jorge Torres-Torres’ intensely creepy film echoes the cult classic Possession in evoking horror from a fractured romantic relationship.

Christmas-Themed Horror Film Stirring Now Live on Kickstarter

We don’t always cover the latest Kickstarter projects because, honestly, who knows if they’ll ever get made. But when word of the Christmas-themed Stirring, starring fan favorite Brinke Stevens, landed in our inbox, it sounded too good to pass up! Read on for the details.

From the Press Release:
Troy Escamilla, in collaboration with Fright Meter Films, is set to produce his second feature film and bring true holiday terror to the screen in fall 2018. Titled Stirring and penned by Escamilla, the project was inspired by Escamilla’s favorite horror film, 1974’s Black Christmas, and will focus on a group of students attending a Christmas party at a sorority house with a sinister past who are stalked by a bloodthirsty killer.

Horror icon and scream queen Brinke Stevens is set to star alongside Helene Udy, who appeared in the classic 1981 slasher My Bloody Valentine, and up-and-coming indie horror actress Kaylee Williams (Model Hunger, The Lashman, Porkchop 3D).

Escamilla has a goal of raising $13,500 by March 10, 2017, with the Stirring campaign. There’s a plethora of great rewards available for backers, including the opportunity to be an extra in the film!

Troy knows and respects the horror genre. He founded the Fright Meter Awards, which have grown in respect and popularity over the last few years with global backers that make up the over 50-member international Award Committee, including bloggers, writers, directors, producers, actors, and fans in the horror genre.

Fright Meter Films’ first feature, Party Night, was filmed this past June after being successfully funded on Kickstarter. Also written and directed by Escamilla, it wrapped post-production last month and has received very positive early reviews with plans to hit the festival circuit in 2017.

Escamilla promises Stirring will not disappoint: “Fans of holiday-themed horror will enjoy the hell out of it; it’s bigger, bloodier, and bolder than Party Night! Fans will recognize winks to Black Christmas; Silent Night, Deadly Night; and To All a Goodnight but will also appreciate its own unique style and take on the Christmas-themed slasher.”

You can learn more and support the film at kickstarter.com/projects/1488629688/stirring.

From the creators of JeruZalem, Tales of Halloween, and Big Ass Spider!, film financier and distributor Epic Pictures released Day of Reckoning on VOD and digital across the US and Canada on January 31, 2017.

The film was written by Gregory Gieras (Big Ass Spider!), directed by Joel Novoa (God’s Slave), and stars Jackson Hurst (“NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Scandal,” “Drop Dead Diva”) and Heather Comb (“Ray Donovan”). Other notable cast members include Hana Hayes (Insidious: Chapter 4, To the Bone), Jay Jay Warren (Night of the Living Fred, Maron), Raymond Barry (Training Day, Born on the Fourth of July), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, We Are Still Here), Nick Gomez (“The Walking Dead,” “Dexter”), and Randy Vasquez (Shameless, “Acapulco H.E.A.T”).

Fifteen years ago, the world suffered a horrific global disaster when millions of demon-like creatures ascended from the bowels of the earth, swarming the entire planet and feasting on mankind for one full day. Now, due to a lunar eclipse, they have returned for 24 hours to purge the earth’s population.  One family will battle against the odds to not only save themselves but to also seal the breach.  Who will survive this “Day of Reckoning?”

Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald believes “Joel Novoa created a real fun action film that plays on a lot of themes around human survival, science, and religion”; and co-founder Shaked Berenson adds, “After the incredible success with Jeruzalem, this is a natural next step for us to take on a picture of this scope with similar dynamics.”

King Kong Will Appear in the Lego Batman Movie

It turns out we don’t have to wait until the March 10, 2017 release of Kong: Skull Island to see the big ape on the big screen, because he’s going to be stomping his way into The Lego Batman Movie.

As revealed in an interview conducted by Flickering Myth  with director Chris McKay and producer Dan Lin, King Kong will appear alongside a bunch of other iconic non-DC villains including Voldemort and Sauron.

So far, there aren’t any pictures of the brick version of cinema’s most famous ape as he’ll appear in the film, but we don’t have long to wait as The Lego Batman Movie hits theaters on February 10. I never thought I’d see the day when Batman and King Kong shared the screen, so this is gonna be something for the history books.

Horror History – Hooper or Spielberg: Who Directed Poltergeist? The Answer is HERE!

$

One of the most hotly debated subjects in horror history has always been, “Who directed 1981’s Poltergeist? Tobe Hooper or Steven Spielberg?” According to the film’s official credits Hooper directed and Spielberg co-wrote and produced. Yet it’s hard to deny the Spielbergian finger prints all over the movie.

Today, as found by Bloody Disgusting, the answer has pretty much come in the form of a rare making-of featurette that has ONLY appeared on the film’s laser disc edition.

During it you’ll clearly see the Spielberg was indeed calling the shots for more than a few key moments in the film, thereby explaining the whole vibe of the flick in general that’s unmistakably more Spielberg than Hooper. Hooper did indeed direct some of the film, so the answer to who directed the film is pretty clear… Though Hooper got the credit, they pretty much both did.

Queensrÿche Investigates The Burningmore Deaths

There ain’t no silent lucidity happening here, kids! A new film is on its way this Valentine’s Day featuring former Queensrÿche member Geoff Tate entitled The Burningmore Deaths and we have your first look!

From the Press Release:
On February 14th, MVD Entertainment will release the feature film debut of Geoff Tate, former lead vocalist of the mega-platinum metal band Queensrÿche. Entitled THE BURNINGMORE DEATHS, the horror film – written and directed by Jonathan Williams – is inspired by true events surrounding unsolved murders captured on security cameras during a production shoot of a Home Improvement TV show pilot.

Tate takes on the role of James Parrish, a man who allegedly killed his own wife and three children before disappearing without a trace. With the home now vacated and boarded up, a home improvement company gets permission to film the renovation process for a test pilot for a TV network, not knowing that Parrish had returned to take up residence once again in the derelict building. Bloody chaos ensues – and it’s all captured on camera!

THE BURNINGMORE DEATHS features an original score by Andrew Kadin with additional music by Dawn of Solace and Geoff Tate.

“I think I’ve always done it… In our own shows and with the way I present music,” said Tate. “It all has a bit of a stage acting bend to it. So this wasn’t really a stretch for me. It was just playing to a different audience, to a camera rather than a room full of people, but it’s the same thing. You play-act and you make stuff up and you present that like you would in a stage show.”

THE BURNINGMORE DEATHS will be available on all digital stores for download and also available on DVD in retail stores, the MVD Shop, and on Amazon.

Blink 182’s Tom DeLonge is Going Through Some Strange Times

Musicians have been making their way to feature films steadily for decades and now Blink 182 founder Tom DeLonge is set to throw his hat into the movie ring with his new feature, Strange Times.

According to THR Delonge’s other band, Angels & Airwaves, will provide original music for the film’s score.

Strange Times centers on a rebellious group of San Diego skateboarders who take it upon themselves to investigate extreme paranormal activity around town, only to embark on an adventure that they could have never imagined.

It is based on DeLonge’s Strange Times franchise, which includes fringe website, a graphic novel and sci-fi YA trilogy that DeLonge is co-writting with author Geoff Herbach, with Simon & Schuster having released the first book, Strange Times: The Ghost in the Girl, last October.

DeLonge co-wrote the script with Ben Kull. The duo worked together on the 2014 animated short film Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker.

I grew up in Southern California as a disaffected young skateboarder who broke the occasional law or five, and I was always dreaming about the world around me, obsessively looking for the more unusual and imaginative experiences that life has to offer,” said DeLonge.

He added: “That’s the inspiration behind Strange Times, which is about the tribe of broken youth and the restless spirit that inspired me to form Blink-182 and seek out adventure.

The musician will also produce under his multimedia company, To the Stars. Stan Spry and Eric Woods from management-production company The Cartel and Russell Binder from Striker Entertainment are also set to produce.

The film is slated to begin production in the fall.

The Walking Dead Unveils Special Edition Digital Topps Trading Cards Featuring NFL Players Turned Walkers

Just in time for Sunday’s Super Bowl, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” has released a special edition digital card set featuring “zombified” professional football players from the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and more.

Greg Nicotero, executive producer, director, and special FX make-up designer for “The Walking Dead,” has created hand-drawn walkers out of Malcolm Jenkins, Geno Atkins, Cole Beasley, Jesse James, Shea McClellin, and John Kuhn, among others, on digital trading cards that football and series fans can collect, at no charge, for a limited time.

“The Walking Dead,” now in its seventh season, is the No. 1 show on television. With “The Walking Dead: Card Trader” app from Topps Digital, fans can collect over 5,000 cards that feature favorite characters, thrilling moments, and locations from the show and trade with fellow fans around the world. The app is available in the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store with hot new digital card releases daily including never-before-seen content covering the entire history of the TV phenomenon. This special-edition set is part of a co-branded licensing effort with the NFL Players Association and made possible through Topps Digital – which is a mutual licensee.

“As far as we’re concerned, the only thing missing from the Big Game is zombies, and we are pleased to rectify that with these special edition ‘The Walking Dead’ cards,” said Theresa Beyer, senior vice president, brand activation and promotions, AMC. “As the #No. 1 show on television for five years running, ‘The Walking Dead’ has a huge fan base that includes many pro football players who enthusiastically signed up to become zombified walkers. We are committed to serving our passionate fans in a variety of ways and can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Big Game and the return of ‘The Walking Dead’ on February 12 than these special edition cards.”

That’s a sentiment echoed by Malcolm Jenkins of the Philadelphia Eagles: “I am a huge fan of ‘The Walking Dead,’” Jenkins said. “In fact, preparing for a zombie apocalypse is my off-season hobby. So I had to jump on the opportunity to become one through the NFLPA’s collaboration with AMC and Topps Digital. I’m excited to see how the other players’ artwork comes out. I think mine turned out pretty cool – I make an excellent zombie.”

As football season ends, “The Walking Dead” returns. The highly anticipated second half of Season 7 of “The Walking Dead” starts on Sunday, February 12th, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. “The Walking Dead” is executive produced by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, Dave Alpert, and Tom Luse.

As for Super Bowl LI, between the Falcons and Patriots, kickoff is set for approximately 6:30 pm ET on Sunday.

Women in Horror Month – Important Voices in the Genre

$
0
0

Given that it’s February and Women in Horror Month, we here at Dread Central would like to take a few moments to acknowledge some of the genre’s most important voices. Keep kicking ass, ladies!

Barbra Crampton – Barbara has been killing it in the genre for decades and, like many of her peers before her such as Elvira, Sigourney Weaver, and Jamie Lee Curtis, has transcended the term Scream Queen. She’s gone above and beyond through her talent, her hard work, and her kindness to fans. We’re lucky to have her!

Barbra Crampton

Kailey Marsh – With her yearly Blood List, Kailey has gone on to find not only some of the biggest and brightest talents in the industry, but also a treasure trove of terror tales just waiting to explode. If you’re a new filmmaker looking to get started, The Blood List just may be your most important first step.

Kailey Marsh

Sandy King Carpenter – The wife and producing partner of legendary director John Carpenter, Sandy has plenty of reasons to sit on her laurels. That’s not in her though. I’m not sure she even has an “off switch.” She’s the first one to lend a hand in any situation when needed and genuinely wants nothing more than to help further our favorite genre. To check out just some of Sandy’s current projects, head on over to Storm King Productions.

Sandy King Carpenter

Shannon McGrew – Shannon’s written for various sites over the years, but the crux of her work can be found on the Nightmarish Conjurings website. Thanks in part to her get up, get in there, and do it attitude, Shannon’s quickly becoming one of the highest rising and most important voices in our genre. Keep an eye on her; she’s going places!

Shannon McGrew

Debi Moore – Debi Moore is someone I’m very proud of. Full disclosure: She’s also the love of my life. That being said, as a professional I can put that all aside and take a moment to recognize her hard work and for being my true right-hand person in this crazy endeavor called Dread Central. Over the years her voice has proved to be both thoughtful and insightful. Nowadays, whether you’re a male or a female, that’s a true rarity!

Debi Moore

Jovanka Vuckovic – I remember Jovanka from her days at Rue Morgue. Even then it was apparent that there’s a fire in her that I don’t ever think will go out. She’s paved the way for a lot of female horror journalists and is now moving steadily into other areas of the genre. Watching her grow and stretch her legs has been nothing short of inspirational. You can see what she’s currently up to over on her official website.

Jovanka Vuckovic

Rebekah McKendry – Rebekah can currently be found over on Blumhouse.com, but her horror roots run deep. Here’s someone who has dealt with a whole lot of crazy in our industry and always come out the other side unscathed thanks to her intelligence, wonderful attitude, and work ethic. Expect nothing but good things no matter what she’s doing!

Rebekah McKendry

The Soska Sisters – What more could be said about Jen and Sylvia? They’re one of the smartest, most energetic, and visionary duos working today. Their films always have just the right amount of sick in them to please fans, and they’re showing not a single sign of slowing down. They truly love what they do, love why they do it, and love the genre. Man, does it show too.

Our Festival Goddesses – The next few women take a lot of time out of their lives each year to put on three of the most kick-ass film festivals on the West Coast and quite possibly worldwide. Rachel Belofsky of Screamfest; Heidi Honeycutt, Stacy Pippi Hammon, and Kayley Viteo of The Etheria Film Night; and Denise Gossett of Shriekfest. You folks have given many filmmakers the playground to play in, and don’t think for a second it isn’t appreciated. You’re all loved beyond words. Thank you.

This list could go on, but to wrap things up, here are a few extra shout-outs:  Axelle Carolyn, Amy Allan, Staci Layne Wilson, Brooke Lewis, Jen Yamato, Gale Anne Hurd, Anne Rice, Julie Plec, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, Jessica Cameron, Heather Wixson, and everyone else who busts their asses on a daily basis for the genre.

Ladies, whether you’re on this list or not… we here at Dread Central salute you. Your drive is something to be admired. Happy Women in Horror Recognition Month. THIS IS YOUR TIME! LIVE IT UP!

The week is ending with some pretty good news for fans of the versatile Sarah Paulson. Per THR, she’s signed on to star in Amazon Studios’ upcoming serial killer drama Lost Girls, based on investigative reporter Robert Kolker’s 2013 nonfiction book of the same name.

The film will be documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus’ (What Happened, Miss Simone?) narrative debut. Kevin McCormick and David Kennedy are producing via their Langley Park production banner. Pamela Hirsch is executive producing.

Michael Werwie wrote the adaptation, which centers on a mother searching for her missing daughter in Long Island who makes a horrifying discovery in the woods where the murdered bodies of four girls have been dumped.

Horror fans will next see Paulson (who recently scooped up SAG, Emmy, and Golden Globe awards for “The People vs. O.J.Simpson: American Crime Story”) in Season 7 of “American Horror Story.”

It’s been slow going to finally get The Strangers 2 off the ground, and it’s looking like it’ll be close to 10 years after the original was released before we’ll be able to see it. But at least things are moving in the right direction… some news has arrived regarding the film’s presence at EFM.

From the Press Release:
BLOOM has taken international rights to The Strangers 2, the sequel to the 2008 hit which grossed over $82 million worldwide. Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door, 47 Meters Down) is on board to direct from a script written by Bryan Bertino, who wrote and directed the original, and Ben Ketai.

The Fyzz Facility Pictures’ Wayne Marc Godfrey (The Foreigner, The Survivalist), Robert Jones (Centurion, The Usual Suspects), and Mark Lane & James Harris (47 Meters Down, I Am Not a Serial Killer) are producing, in association with Relativity Media. BLOOM will be handling international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin.

The Strangers 2 follows a family whose road trip takes a turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park and, after the power goes out, decide to hunker down for the night in a borrowed trailer. Under the cover of darkness three familiar masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test their every limit. Casting is under way with the US-based shoot scheduled for the summer.

BLOOM Alex Walton said, “I am truly scared every time I think of the original The Strangers movie; it is my favorite horror film of the past 10 years. The screenplay will immediately satisfy any fan of the original, and I’m confident of a growing audience for this genre around the world.“

The Fyzz’s Mark Lane said, “The Strangers redefined the home invasion genre by perfectly combining character and terror in a way that we rarely see. This is a sequel that has been eagerly awaited, and we are delighted to deliver it to the fans.”

Johannes Robert’s said, “Working with The Fyzz and Bloom to bring the brilliant setup from the first movie to a new generation and deliver a powerful sequel is incredibly exciting.”

British director Roberts recently teamed with The Fyzz Facility Pictures for coming-of-age drama Hearts, which he adapted with writing partner Ernest Riera from Stephen King’s critically acclaimed novella Hearts in Atlantis. Roberts’ previous films include horror film The Other Side of the Door for 20th Century Fox and shark thriller 47 Meters Down starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, which will have a wide release this summer.

Bertino most recently wrote and directed horror drama The Monster for A24 and is currently producing fantasy horror Stephanie for Blumhouse Productions.
