DVD and Blu-ray Releases: February 7, 2017

Welcome back, folks. We had a good handful of last minute additions this week, which bumps our total count up to 23 releases. Combine that with next week’s 29 releases and February alone has more than 50 entries to choose from. We have a good handful of classics this week, as well as some decent TV releases, so let’s get to it.

Starting with the 1960s, we have DVD releases for Dr. Orloff’s Monster and Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. There’s something about doctors and their monsters that just seems to put people off.

We do have an entry from 1970 coming to us from Hammer Films. Now we can all Taste The Blood Of Dracula. I’d imagine it’s very high in iron.

From the 1980s we have the Critters collection. My favorite scene will always be from the bowling alley. That’s how you knock some pins down. Also from the 80s is “Twilight Zone: The Complete 80s Series.” Rounding out the best decade ever is 1984’s Wild Beasts on DVD and Blu-ray.

IN addition to the “Twilight Zone” entry, we also have Season 3 of “From Dusk Til Dawn” as well as the complete “Penny Dreadful” series.

All of this comes along with a bunch of other titles this week, including the highly anticipated Abattoir. Keep reading below and see what else tickles your fancy, and be sure to check back next week for more fancy tickling. As always, pleasant viewing.

Wesley Snipes Fights Aliens in The Recall VR Abduction

0

The guy who saved humankind from vampires time and again (and looked cool doing it) is about to save us from aliens, as Wesley Snipes will be appearing the the upcoming interactive short The Recall VR Abduction, which takes place in the same universe as the upcoming feature length film The Recall.

From the Press Release:
Action movie veteran Wesley Snipes will star in his first virtual reality project, THE RECALL VR ABDUCTION, scheduled for release this summer 2017. In this VR film experience, Snipes is interacting with the user through the eyes of another cast member played by R.J. Mitte (Breaking Bad’s Walt Jr.), to pursue death-defying adventures in a world facing alien invasion. This standalone transmedia piece exists in the same universe as the feature-length film, THE RECALL, and features the same cast. The Recall is produced by Mind’s Eye Entertainment who has teamed up with VMI Worldwide, Bridgegate Pictures, Invico Capital, , Talking Dog Studios and SkyVR, to create this virtual reality piece that places viewers in this storyworld colored by extraterrestrial terror.

THE RECALL VR ABDUCTION, a 10 minute VR film, will subject the viewer to the sci-fi tension through Mitte’s eyes, as he and his friends first encounter Snipes’ mysterious character. Directed by Mauro Borelli, the experience serves as a stand-alone transmedia story, and alongside Snipes, features Jedidiah Goodacre, Niko Pepaj, Laura Maria Bilgeri, and Hannah Rose May.

Snipes was eager to highlight the innovative challenges of working in this dynamic medium for the first time. “The cool thing is that for theater actors, or thespians, this is a great format, because shooting in VR is similar to shooting a play, or performing a play,” explained Snipes. “You don’t have the luxury of cuts, and short takes, and do overs. You have to be on your game, and since everything is in the shot, everyone else needs to be on their game at the same time.”

HE RECALL VR ABDUCTION is currently set for release prior to the feature, but with multiple endings different from the feature this makes for a very unique standalone experience. In addition, audiences will be able to delve even further into the production process, through several VR and 360 behind-the-scenes clips that will be released in the coming months via THE RECALL film social media accounts on Facebook 360 and YouTube 360.

“This will change the way we hear about movies and rewrite the way we package content. Viewers today are smarter and have access to more content right at their fingertips not just to watch the movie, but live in the realm and watch the feature through this new medium,” – VR Producer Travis Cloyd.

“We are excited about the opportunity to team with Wesley Snipes, Talking Dog Studios and SkyVR to tell this story in a virtual reality format outside of the traditional feature experience.” – Minds Eye Entertainment CEO and Producer Kevin DeWalt.

“VR is one of the most innovative technologies to come of age in recent years. We are proud to all come together and lead this technology into the future,” – Bridgegate Pictures, Executive Producer Guy Griffithe.

Feature film production on The Recall was made in multiple formats including BARCO Escape and made possible through the Creative Saskatchewan Screen-Based Media Production Grant Program, with the participation of the Province of British Columbia Production Services Tax Credit and Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit.

Exclusive: Katrina Rennells and Wendie Weldon Talk A Knock at the Door

I really enjoyed the short film A Knock at the Door in my review, so I was honored to be able to discuss the project further with directors Katrina Rennells and Wendie Weldon. In the following interview, they break down how they were able to create some of the scariest eight minutes that you’re likely to ever see.

If you’re hoping to catch A Knock at the Door, details for two upcoming screenings are listed below:

Pasadena International Film Festival
Laemmle Playhouse 7
673 E. Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena, CA 91101
Friday, March 10th @ 8:30pm
Block #6

NewFilmmakers LA
South Park Center
1139 S. Hill Street
Los Angeles, CA 90015
Saturday, March 25th @ 7:15pm
Shorts Program #2: In Focus: Female Directors

Dread Central: How were you able to make such an effective short from a relatively simple premise?

Wendie Weldon: Truth be told, we kind of fell upon this idea. It was a collaboration of artists and this was the way we were able to include everyone that we wanted to work with. It was a bit of a happy accident.

Katrina Rennells: Some of the central ideas were ones that happened to a couple of us in real life. And to develop those ideas into the horror genre even further, we asked ourselves, “What would be the most terrifying thing that could happen in this moment?” The story fell into place quite organically, and then we had some very talented people working in post production who really brought our vision to completion.

DC: As audio plays a large role in A Knock at the Door, can you talk about the sound design process?

KM: The sound process was actually the toughest part of the project.

WW: We ended up having to go through multiple post sound people. Because our film is so driven by the atmosphere, we had to be very careful to select the sounds that enhanced that and had the right tone.

KM: It took a long time. I think the main sound of our “entity” stemmed from Wendie, actually. We were just sitting in a meeting one time, and she made this really loud creepy noise that she apparently likes to make randomly, and first, we were like, who is this crazy person we’ve decided to work with? But also, let’s definitely use that noise in the short. She ended up recording that noise in my closet and we played around with it in post.

DC: Correct me if I’m wrong, but I got the impression that loneliness is a central theme of A Knock at the Door, because Nick seems to be isolated from humanity. Was this something you wanted to tackle?

WW Yes. It was a by-product of us tackling trust and questioning how much you can trust those around you. As a result of that, it left our lead character isolated.

KM: Yeah, agreed. With a lack of trust comes isolation, so it’s really one of the more depressing results of what a threat like this can cause people to do.

DC: What else are you working on?

WW: We’re in development on the feature version of A Knock at the Door. We’re all avid filmmakers, so individually, we all have our own projects that are consistently being made.

KM: I’ve also got a couple short films and a play coming up that I’m acting in and Wendie made a web series that’s in post production. One of our actors, David Sullivan, has a ton of projects coming out right now – he was just at Sundance for a movie called Deidhra & Laney Rob a Train and is one of the leads on the Netflix show Flaked.

DC: Would you open your door if you heard a knock late at night?

KM: Yeah, after checking to see who it is. If it was a friend or family member, I would definitely open the door. Well on second thought, maybe not now, after working on this film…..

WW: I would look through the peephole, like Nick. If it was someone I knew, I would probably open it unknowingly.

About A Knock at the Door
A Knock at the Door is, at it’s core, a chilling and self-reflective exploration of trust that avoids the blood and gore typical of the genre. It has been described as a cross between popular horror flicks Invasion of the Body Snatchers and It Follows.

The female directing/writing duo, Katrina Rennells and Wendie Weldon, would agree. Despite this being their first time working together, they “saw eye-to-eye on almost everything. We’d wanted to direct for a while, and to have each other’s back through the first-time directing process was cool.”

Kelley Mack, the main producer of the film, is proud of the team that’s come together. One of the lead actors, David Sullivan, was in the Oscar-nominated Argo, their composer, Ryan Stratton, did original music for Hum, a Student Oscar-nominated short, and their final colorist, Rick Dalby, is known for his work on Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Wonder Years and more.

A Knock at the Door recently won the Jury Choice Award at the Atlanta Horror Film Festival, and the NYC Horror Film Festival is hosting the film’s last public screening of the year. It will be playing again in early 2017. Details will be announced on their website, listed below, in the coming months.

Vampires (UK Blu-ray)

$

Starring James Woods, Daniel Baldwin, Sheryl Lee, Thomas Ian Griffith, Maximilian Schell

Directed by John Carpenter

Distributed by Powerhouse Films

The nineties generally isn’t considered horror legend John Carpenter’s high point. Sure, he directed In the Mouth of Madness, arguably the best Lovecraft film ever made, but he had a string of misfires with Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Village of the Damned and Escape from L.A. His work during this period lacked the energy and passion he used to bring to every project, with Village, in particular, coming across like a work for hire assignment.

1998’s Vampires was a latter-day hit for the director, and while the reviews weren’t glowing his fans lapped it up. Of all his movies Vampires is probably the closest he got to a full blown Western, with the story following a team of mercenaries hunting bloodsuckers throughout New Mexico. After a successful hunt, the team is ambushed by an unstoppable master vampire, who wipes out everyone but leader Jack Crow (Woods) and Montoya (Baldwin). They regroup and head out on a revenge mission, and discover the master’s ultimate goal doesn’t bode well for humanity.

Vampires is a long way from Carpenter’s best, but it’s a hell of a lot of fun too. James Woods is an unconventional pick for an action hero role, and he’s clearly relishing the chance to play a leather-clad badass. His character is an asshole to everyone, and his boiling hatred for vampires makes him surprisingly convincing during the action scenes. Sheryl Lee does a good job in what could have been a thankless role, playing a prostitute bitten by the master and cursed with the ability to see through his eyes. It feels like Carpenter is remaking his old concept for Faye Dunaway thriller Eyes of Laura Mars here, but doing it properly this time around, and Lee gamely commits. Her romance with Baldwin never clicks, though, since they don’t have much chemistry together.

The film doesn’t skimp on the gore, with the first act massacre of the team painting the screen red. Carpenter’s signature music score is present, this time coming with a western motif to fit the setting. He has a great time filming the desert landscape and desolate little towns the heroes pass through, and even uses a few Leone-style zooms. The film comes packed with attitude, but it does flag in spots, and the clunky approach to exposition and plot development spoils some of the fun. That said, Vampires moves like lightning, and is easily one of the director’s most purely enjoyable latter-day efforts.

This new region free Blu-ray edition from Powerhouse Films is probably the best Vampires has ever looked and comes with brand new extras. Ported over from the old DVD release is an interesting Carpenter commentary, a short making of, some cast and crew interviews and B-roll footage. It also comes packaged with a booklet featuring an essay from critic Kim Newman, and a recent interview with Carpenter. The highlight of the disc is a Carpenter interview from 1994, where the director talks about his career up to Christine; the second half of this lengthy talk is featured on Powerhouse’s Ghosts of Mars disc. It’s a fun chat, and it’s nice to see him so engaged.

Whether you’re a Carpenter fan or someone who likes their vampire films to have some bite – like actual, bloody bites – then Vampires is definitely worth a look.

Special Features:
• Audio commentary with John Carpenter
• 1994 John Carpenter video interview with The Guardian
• Behind the scenes documentary
• Cast & Crew Interviews
• B-roll footage
• Theatrical trailer
• Booklet with essay by Kim Newman and 2015 John Carpenter interview

Don’t Look Now, The Hitcher and the Power of Existential Horror

$

What exactly is an existential horror movie? As with defining a horror overall, the answer is often down to personal choice. We are all scared of different things.

Most of the time. There are certain fears and anxieties that seem to transcend the most common fears, and they’re ones that everyone shares whether they openly admit it or not. No, I’m not talking about spiders or heights – this is more to do with the nature of existence itself. Concerns regarding love, life, death, sex and everything in between. Why am I here? Who am I? What is my place in this world?

Jonathan Glazer directed Under The Skin

The Existential Attitude, as described by Robert C. Solomon, is “a sense of disorientation, confusion, or dread in the face of an apparently meaningless or absurd world.” Sure, you may be thinking this is a bunch of philosophical baloney, but the truth is it touches something within everyone.

And when put into the context of horror, it is made all the more frightening for it. Great examples include films like Jacob’s Ladder, Marebito, Martyrs, Under The Skin and many more. The best recent examples perhaps, are The Babadook and Under the Shadow, which both deal with a mother’s handling of death and the following grief through tormenting spirits.

Most horror movies are existential in some way. The threat almost always represents something else. Something within. But some horror films reflect this better than others, touching on an uncanny and barely explainable feeling as a result of an individual’s perception-altering experience.

Don’t Look Now – (Nicolas Roeg, 1973)

Don't Look Now starring Donald Sutherland

So much of what existential horror does relates to people being isolated as an individual. That’s what allows them to have the thoughts laid out above, or to question the nature of their existence and the universe they inhabit. Don’t Look Now is a perfect example of this from the offset, as a bereaved couple move to Venice after the death of their young daughter. Most of the film plays out with the couple attempting to get on with life in this new city, and it’s here where the film is at its most effective and unsettling.

John (Donald Sutherland) and Laura (Julie Christie) don’t see their grief take the form of a monster, supernatural entity or serial killer – at least not for most of the film’s running time. Here the parent’s horror manifests itself in the daylight of Venice, in its canals, church bells and winding streets. It creates an inimitable tone that is present across much of Roeg’s filmography, though never quite as effectively as this.

By the time the film’s climax hits, with a revelation that fits some of the pieces together, the audience is overcome with the aforementioned existential attitude. As the “child” John chases throughout Venice is revealed to be a dwarf serial killer who promptly butchers him to death, he experiences an epiphany. He’d been experiencing premonitions of his own death all along, and now his existential crisis comes to a tragic end.

The Hitcher – (Robert Harmon, 1986)

The Hitcher stars Rutger Hauer as John Ryder

The Hitcher takes the individual experience further, as the entire film takes place with our protagonist Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) alone on the open road. Alone that is except for his tormentor, John Ryder aka The Hitcher, in a truly electrifying performance by Rutger Hauer.

The setup is simple: Jim picks up a hitchhiker, only to soon discover that the man is something of a depraved maniac. Thus commences a movie-long chase, a chase for the thrill of the game – and for Jim’s soul.

If Venice was the platform for John and Laura’s existential anxieties being presented physically in Don’t Look Now, in The Hitcher that role is performed by Ryder – a flesh and blood character. Or is he?

As the film progresses, Ryder comes across as more of an entity than a real person. An irresistible force of moral ambiguity and nihilistic uncertainty. It’s this man and his facets that force Jim to look into himself and think about his darker tendencies. What he’s capable of, or what he’s willing to become.

Jim is eventually driven to chase Ryder himself rather than flee. The hunted becomes the hunter. As Ryder pushes Jim to kill him, his journey is complete. The story closes on Jim leaning against a police car, silhouetted against the night sky and looking very much like The Hitcher himself. He’s confused and disoriented in the face of a meaningless, nihilistic World. The blood, death and murder left in the wake of the psychotic hitcher has been halted. But if Jim has to become more like Ryder in order to stop him, what is the point?

The Quintessential Existential Horror?

The Hitcher is, in my view, the greatest example of existential horror. It touches on all of the aspects discussed here, wrapped up in a simple-but-effective horror tale of a murderous hitchhiker tracking down his prey. The images it creates (featuring some truly beautiful cinematography by John Seale) and the questions it poses result in a truly terrifying concoction worthy of any horror fan’s respect.

What do you think makes a horror movie “existential?” What are your favourite examples? Does it even matter? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter!

Jennifer Connelly Gets Evil for James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel

With Ghost in the Shell looming, something tells us that we’re going to be seeing a lot more big budget Far East adaptations in the near future. Case in point: THR is reporting that Jennifer Connelly has joined the cast of Alita: Battle Angel, James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s ambitious adaptation of the popular manga graphic novels.

The movie is currently in production in Texas with Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar playing the title character.

Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, and Ed Skrein are among those on the call sheet for the Fox franchise hopeful.

Rodriguez is directing while Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau are producing.

Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.

Connelly is one of the villains.

More as it comes.

Hellraiser: Judgment Poised for a Limited Theatrical Run?

The last time we had heard anything regarding Hellraiser: Judgment we reported that it had received a release date of March 28, 2017. The news came from both iMDB and the official Facebook page of the new Pinhead, Paul T. Taylor. Things have been quiet ever since.

That changed recently though when the 60 Minutes With podcast caught up with director Gary Tunnicliffe who had this to say about the film’s release plans.

All I can say is, the movie is finished. It’s edited – got sound and music, and it’s all done. There’s a trailer, which I just saw. There’s a poster, which is really fucking cool. It’s utterly brilliant. I hope to god they use it. It’s not a big Photoshop thing, it’s like a Drew Struzan picture. It’s lovely. But apparently they did see it and think, ‘We may do a limited theatrical on it.’ But I don’t know. They will release it when they see fit. It could be soon, it could be later. It could be theatrical, it could not be. I’m sure I’ll be the last to know.

That doesn’t sound like the film is going to making that date to us, but when we get some formal confirmation we’ll let you know.

Hellraiser: Judgment stars Damon Carney, John Gulagher, Diane Goldner, Mike Jay Regan, Andi Powers, Jeff Fenter, Heather Langenkamp, and Paul T. Taylor as Pinhead.

Synopsis:
Detectives Sean and David Carter are on the case to find a gruesome serial killer terrorizing the city. Joining forces with Detective Christine Egerton, they dig deeper into a spiraling maze of horror that may not be of this world. Could the judgement awaiting the killer’s victims also be waiting for Sean?
