GASP! Paramount Swipes Right for Terror!

0
0

Even though they’ve collectively shelved a new Friday the 13th and World War Z sequel, Paramount hasn’t stopped looking for new horrors to send shivers up and down our spines.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has acquired the thriller pitch Gasp for Jennifer Gibgot and Adam Shankman’s Offspring Entertainment.

The script will be written by Mario Celaya, and “American Horror Story’s” Jessica Sharzer will supervise the scribe and co-produce, with Gibgot and Shankman producing. The thriller premise is topical, even though the model is Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct.

Gasp is inspired by a number of true stories of women who are getting killed by men they are meeting on dating apps. A female detective has to go undercover online to catch a killer who is murdering women he meets on a specific popular dating app. She starts to fall for one of the suspects who has been cleared, only to discover that he may in fact be the killer.

Stay tuned for more as it comes.

Poltergeist II: The Other Side (Blu-ray)

0
0

Poltergeist 2Starring Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Heather O’Rourke, Will Sampson

Directed by Brian Gibson

Distributed by Scream Factory

The ‘80s were fertile ground for horror sequels, with nearly every film that was a remote hit scoring at minimum one follow-up. So, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Tobe “Collect the paycheck and let Steven do the work” Hooper’s Poltergeist (1982) would exhume (most) of the original’s cast for another go-round. The problem, however, is the film that followed, Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), proves a sequel rule not only for stellar original movies but for Spielberg titles, too: it isn’t needed. Key word: needed. This isn’t commenting on those rare sequel exceptions; this is a fact true of sequels in general. And also sequels to Spielberg films. Look, I enjoy the subsequent entries in the Jaws and Jurassic Park series as much as every fan of killer sharks and dinosaurs, but were any of them remotely as good as the first? Spielberg has an incredible ability to capture awe and wonder and discovery better than almost any other director out there, but those are filmic qualities that are extremely difficult to replicate.

Poltergeist took time to uncover the mystery of what is afflicting the Freeling family, specifically young Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke). Characters were richly developed, a strong familial bond was established, unexplained events grew in frequency and fear level as the movie progressed… all of this felt organic, never contrived. I can still watch Poltergeist today, after a couple decades and nearly as many viewings, and it gets me excited each time.

Alright, enough effusive gushing – how’s the sequel? Not that good. Most of the Freeling family is back with the exception of Dana, since actress Dominique Dunne was tragically killed by her boyfriend in the fall of 1982. They now live with Diane’s (JoBeth Williams) mother, “Grandma Jess” (Geraldine Fitzgerald), in Phoenix (which is definitely not Altadena, CA; a stone’s throw from the first film’s primary location). The old site where the Freeling house once stood in Cuesta Verde has now become a site for paranormal archaeology, where Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein), continues to look for signs of the afterlife. Her digging reveals an underground cave where the body of Rev. Kane (Julian Beck), a long-dead, crazy preacher is discovered. Tangina confers with her Native American shaman buddy, Taylor (Will Sampson), who drives to the Freelings’ new home to help protect them.

The Freelings, meanwhile, have been trying to adjust to their new lives. The family seems mostly back to normal, although they refuse to own a TV. Robbie (Oliver Robins) seems to resent the situation they are now in, though it doesn’t seem to bother Carol Anne at all. One night, Carol Anne gets a call from Grandma Jess on her toy phone; the next morning we learn Grandma Jess died that night. Rev. Kane and his spirits attempt to enter the home via Carol Anne’s plastic phone but the family flees before undergoing a repeat of their last paranormal encounter. Taylor, however, catches up with the family and tells Steven (Craig T. Nelson) running will do no good because these spirits will find them wherever they go. Taylor brings everyone back to their home and strengthens it with his shaman magic, but a final fight with Kane still looms on the horizon.

I really want to like this movie more than it allows but it brings absolutely nothing new to the table. Worse, it actually devalues some of the actions and characters from the first film. The idea of a faceless horde of malevolent ghosts is a scary concept because it isn’t a single, recognizable antagonist, whereas making Rev. Kane the villain here creates not only a weak moment of retconning (suggesting it was him all along) but also diminishes that fear of the unknown. Kane is certifiably creepy, don’t get me wrong, but he is less effective as a villain than the entities of the original. Secondly, all of this is old hat for the Freelings. We’ve seen them go through the paranormal ringer already, and nothing done to them here is as enthralling as last time…

…except for a potential cool moment: the other side. As the film’s subtitle suggests, viewers are likely going for a trip to that otherworldly dimension only glimpsed in the first film. And once the film takes us there we’re astounded to see… actors hanging from wires in front of a blue screen projecting pastel paint swirls? The hell? Talk about a missed opportunity. Look, it’s one thing if your movie is, say, Phantasm (1979) and you don’t have much of a budget to make your netherworld something grand, but Poltergeist II spent more on craft services than Coscarelli had for his entire shoot. It would have been great to see some crazy, inventive production design in there. Make it memorable.

Of course, MGM also cut this film to ribbons – the final conflict with Kane lasts all of 47 seconds, Dana’s absence is never even touched upon, Tangina’s role was cut significantly – so there is clearly some blame that lies with the studio.

There’s also some garbage in here from Grandma Jess, conveniently just before she dies, talking about how Diane is clairvoyant and so is Carol Anne and Grandma, too, so viewers can know to expect her to show up as Ghost Grandma at the climax and do something big to help the family.

Other than a genuinely unsettling performance from Julian Beck as Kane – the actor had cancer during filming, which gave him that skeletal appearance – the best moments on screen come from the film’s impressive FX team. Creature design duties were handled by H.R. Giger, with realization coming from Steve Johnson, Screaming Mad George, and Richard Edlund. Unfortunately, a lot of Giger’s work was discarded and what did wind up on screen was blasted by the artist but, ironically, those fleeting moments of the legendary artist’s designs are the highlights. When Steven yaks up that bubbling bag of bile and it slithers under the bed, it’s gross and awesome. When the Kane creature wriggles out from under that bed, having gone through some lightning-fast metamorphosis, it is the stuff of nightmares. The gelatinous, malformed body that offers up a grim smile to Steven and Diane is unsettling and provides the film with its best moment by a mile.

Thank Christ for Jerry Goldsmith. Similar to how John Williams elevated Jaws 2 (1978) immensely by delivering a killer score Goldsmith returns for another go-round on the strings here. His work isn’t as good as it was on the first film but that’s like saying the same thing about Williams’ score – you’re still getting a score from one of the masters of composing.

I know it probably sounds like I hate Poltergeist II: The Other Side and that isn’t true. There just isn’t any reason for it to exist. The Freeling family story was succinctly wrapped up at the end of Poltergeist – the house was sucked into oblivion! – and dragging them through the mud once again just feels… cheap. Believe me, I feel odd saying this because I love and defend plenty of horror sequels but in this case it really follows the sequel formula to a “T”: make it like the first film with minor changes. Kane isn’t the most compelling villain but Beck played him beautifully, and I really enjoyed Will Sampson’s role. Dude spends the entire film trying to help out the Freeling family and we learn at the end it was all because he wanted their station wagon. And once Steven agrees to hand it over Taylor just takes off, leaving the family stranded! What a bizarrely humorous ending for a horror film.

Taken from a new 2K scan of the inter-positive, the film’s 2.35:1 1080p image looks great. This is a pristine image, completely free of dirt and damage, with accurately saturated colors and strong contrast. Black levels are deep and dark, never hazy. Fine detail and overall definition are both on-point. Film grain appears natural and fine, with the obvious exception of optical effects shots. There are some moments of softness that appear sporadically, and occasionally dark shadows can swallow up the picture, but overall this is a very strong picture.

As is usually standard, Scream Factory has included an English DTS-HD MA track in both 2.0 stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Levels seemed a little low to me, with some dialogue being a bit hard to hear. The entirety of the track is clean and presented with good fidelity; there are no issues to report. Jerry Goldsmith’s score is one of the film’s highlights – and definitely the standout in terms of the audio presentation – providing the few moments of real immersion. His use of new and recurrent themes plays a big role in tying this in to the original. Subtitles are available in English SDH.

There are two audio commentary tracks – writer/producer Michael Grais, and one with Poltergeist webmaster David Fortney.

“Robbie’s Return” is an interview with co-star Oliver Robins.

“The Spirit World” – Special effects designer Richard Edlund, Steve Johnson, and Screaming Mad George sit down for a long talk about all of the amazing creative work they were able to achieve with this film, even if some of what was planned wound up being compromised.

“Ghosts of Giger – A Look at the Contributions of Artist H.R. Giger Featuring Rare Photos and Illustrations and An Interview with Friend and Agent Les Barany” is a must-watch for Giger fans.

“They’re Back – The Making of Poltergeist II” – This is a standard studio EPK, but it’s fun in a retro kind of way.

“Monster Shop” – This brief piece shows some of the on-set shooting of the film’s FX work.

“Ghost Makers – The Magic of Poltergeist II” – Here is some more FX coverage.

A theatrical trailer, four TV spots, a still gallery, and the entire “Poltergeist II” script (if you pause on each page) are also included.

Coming at us via Saban Films is Colm McCarthy’s infection flick The Girl with All the Gifts, an adaptation of M.R. Carey’s same-named novel. It premiered exclusively on DirecTV on January 26 before hitting theaters and VOD on February 24. Check out some new eye candy below.

The post-apocalyptic thriller stars Gemma Arterton (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Clash of the Titans), Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum, Hot Fuzz), six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close (Guardians of the Galaxy, Albert Nobbs, Dangerous Liaisons), and Sennia Nanua in her breakthrough performance.

The Girl with All the Gifts is set in a dystopian world where a seemingly normal and very intelligent little girl lives in an underground army bunker with other children her age. They are all experimental cases being examined by scientists – led by Dr. Caldwell (Close) – to find a cure for a fungal spore that has infected the planet.

Carey has adapted his novel into a film with an unmatched level of cataclysm,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley. “The Girl with All the Gifts is a sophisticated movie, with McCarthy’s vision and this dynamic cast, and we know that our audiences will be hooked from start to finish.”

The BFI (British Film Institute) and Creative England financed the film, which was produced by Camille Gatin and Angus Lamont. Warner Bros. UK will release the film in the UK.

Mutant Football League Promises to be The Wildest, Goriest, Most Outrageous Football Game Ever

0
0

Before EA struck gold with their FIFA soccer series, they released a much more oddball, much more unique sports video game in the form of 1993’s Mutant League Football. As its name suggests, it featured mutants in a nightmarish post-apocalyptic version of Earth settle their differences by competing in the sport of American football.

So yeah, with such a weird premise, it was obviously never gonna be a huge hit, although it did get a sequel in the form of Mutant League Hockey. There was even a spinoff animated TV series with (somehow) lasted for two seasons.

24 years after the release of Mutant League Football, we’re getting a spiritual successor by the name of Mutant Football League. What a vastly different title, eh? Anyway, development on Mutant Football League is being led by Michael Mendheim, who also created the original game.

And don’t worry if you suck at sporting video games. If you can’t win the match, you can just kill all the other players, which would make your team win by default. With everything from explosives to chainsaws at your disposal, you can expect to be seeing a whole lot of red on the pitch. No wonder the official Kickstarter campaign calls Mutant Football League the “wildest, goriest, most outrageous football game ever”. They also promise “over the top visual and gore effects” and even have a move known as the “Chainsaw Massacre”. Sounds like our kind of shit.

You may not have heard of the series, but its already raised well over its $60,000 goal. So there are fans out there. Lots of them, it seems. And they’ll all be playing this brutal football game when it launches on PC in October and on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018.

Exclusive: Andrew C. Erin Talks Havenhurst

0
0

Opening in limited release tomorrow, Havenhurst is a film that every self-respecting horror fan should make an effort to see. It stars Julie Benz as a recovering alcoholic who moves into the titular New York City apartment building, without knowing that it harbors a terrible secret.

I talked to director Andrew C. Erin about Havenhurst (review) on Skype; and boy, did he have some interesting things to say. We discussed everything from the inception of the idea to the experience of filming in New York City and Los Angeles, so I think you’ll find our talk to be highly informative.

Dread Central: I watched Havenhurst, and it was great.

Andrew C. Erin: Thank you.

DC: How did it all come about from an idea to a completed film?

ACE: Well, myself and Daniel Farrands, the other writer on it, came up with this idea many, many years ago when we were putting a room together and tasked with a horror concept that landed solidly in the genre and could be franchisable. We were going back and forth and back and forth, and really connecting as we’re both horror nerds, and we came across the story of H. H. Holmes, and from there we become very excited with the idea of “what if there were places in New York City (because he was all over the place, he traveled a lot) that hadn’t been discovered yet, and what if he had descendants that were doing the same things but in a much more modern and sophisticated level?”

So we got our juices flowing, and that’s when Havenhurst was born. And not that long after, we had set it up as a TV series with Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate, and then we got the rights back after it didn’t end up going. We got the script, financed it, got a production company, and then went back to Twisted Pictures, who got on board again, and we made the film that you watched.

DC: You said you wanted something franchisable. Does that mean there might be a sequel?

ACE: Well, it depends. We set it up, we put so much energy into developing the storyline as a TV series and a franchisable feature that we have ideas for the second one and the third one. So if this one does really well, then yeah, we’d love to do another one.

DC: The Havenhurst building was kind of like a maze. I thought that was quite an interesting design.

ACE: Yeah, that was taken straight out of H.H. Holmes and what he did with his house of horror in Chicago. So we built on that under the guise that this is 100, you know, almost 200 years later, with more resources and technology. So his descendants have really turned that building into quite a mechanism. And we were only able to achieve so much of it on the budget that we had, but we did the best we could.

Havenhurst

DC: Did you film in New York City?

ACE: We did two days in New York City, where we shot the exterior of Havenhurst and Julie Benz walking through the city, and everything else was shot in Los Angeles. All of the interiors were shot on a stage, so we built all of the apartments and the hallways and the laundromat, and then we used other locations in and around Los Angeles. Like the basement and the car chase were done in downtown LA.

DC: Which building did you use as the Havenhurst exterior?

ACE: There’s a series of buildings on the East Side of New York called Tudor City. So from the very inception of the idea, we really focused on those Gothic-looking buildings. They were built in the early 1900s, and we just really liked the look of them.

DC: I got the impression that the film tackled the theme of redemption, with Julie Benz’s character being a recovering alcoholic, and there was also the abusive stepfather.

ACE: Yeah, it’s eh, y’know, it’s sort of a morality play, you know, in the sense that… I think that’s why Twisted Pictures liked it because it’s in the same sense as Saw. Because as backwards as these people are who run the building, they’re giving people a chance to better their lives for themselves and the people around them. So Eleanor, who runs the building, she has every intention of helping these people if they live a straight and good life. That’s her hope.

DC: Were there any other themes?

ACE: No, we tried to keep it… addiction is such a complex thing, such a human thing, that we really wanted to keep that simple and grounded. And this movie is really a marriage between the struggle of addiction and what H.H. Holmes did. As sort of a cure or punishment or a finality, using his viciousness, you know. And I think Eleanor, who initially wasn’t, way back when, wasn’t this evil human being, she saw an opportunity for given this, people who struggle so much, an opportunity to have a better life, and she supports that, up until the point where they continue doing their thing, and then she lets the family lineage do what it does. It’s complex enough, so we wanted to keep it grounded and dead.

DC: You had quite a cool villain, with the swords on his arms and stuff.

ACE: (Laughs) Yeah, that was Jed. That’s the modern version of H.H. Holmes, where this is a person who, for the most part, lives between the walls and spends his time developing different mechanisms to punish people, to kill people. So we had some fun coming up with that stuff.

DC: So do you think there really are unsolved mysteries about H.H. Holmes?

ACE: Oh definitely. Yeah. Up until recently, they talked about… he may even have been Jack the Ripper.

DC: Really?

ACE: Yeah… there was a whole book written on it, but they were able to disprove that I think through DNA. But know, he traveled, he traveled up into Canada, he traveled through Europe; when he was caught in Texas, he was doing another house of horrors. He was building another hotel. So yeah, I think there’s some stuff we’ll never find out about what he was doing.

DC: Can you describe working with Julie Benz?

ACE: Oh it was great, you know, it’s every directors dream to find really talented, professional actors. We had a great casting director Ramirez, and because Daniel Farrands co-wrote, such a heavyweight in the horror genre, because Dan wrote Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers and produced Haunting in Connecticut, the next Amityville, so they had a pretty broad reach as far as talent. So with that combination we were able to get people like Julie Benz, who was a real professional. You never know what you’re going to get when you’ve got someone with that much experience, but she showed up every day, she was really into it, a real pro, she did a great job.

Fionnula Flanagan, who I was such a fan of from The Others, and Danielle Harris, who’s got such a strong pedigree in the horror genre… It was just a treat as a director to work with all of them.

DC: I liked the practical gore effects.

ACE: I always try to use as many practical effects as I can. Everything, almost… we had two incredible companies, Vincent Guastini of VGP Effects, and then we used Chris LeDoux, his VFX company is Crafty Apes, and they do some pretty huge things, so it was a great combination of both of them. So we really tried to do everything as practical as we could until we couldn’t afford to (laughs).

DC: What else do you think sets Havenhurst apart from other horror films?

ACE: You know, our goal from the get-go, because we’re such horror fans we didn’t want to reinvent the wheel, we just wanted to make something that we’d want to watch, something that lands solidly in the genre, that’s not reinventing the wheel, something that’s effective. And we really focused on the production value, and the cast, and just every aspect, to make it really well. You know, so hopefully those elements will not so much set it apart as satisfy horror fans.

Havenhurst

DC: How did you come up with the name?

ACE: Well, Havenhurst is H.H., right?

DC: Oh, I didn’t notice that.

ACE: So we wanted to have the H.H. in there, we had a whole theme of H.H. stuff we wanted to do, and yeah, as we were coming up with names for the building, we would bounce names on each other and come up with lists, and Havenhurst just seemed like the perfect feel and fit.

DC: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

ACE: I hope everyone enjoys it as much as we enjoyed making the film.

Jason’s Back in New Friday NES Inspired Fan Film

We’re all still bummed by Paramount’s move to bump production of a new Friday the 13th movie indefinitely. It just sucks and millions of Friday fans around the world are just baffled and saddened by the fact that a new film in this storied franchise is so ridiculously hard to get off of the ground.

Well be prepared for that frown to be turned upside down with the premiere of Michael Ramova’s Friday the 13th fan film inspired by Nintendo’s 1989 LJN video game! Oh how sweet it is!

Everything is translated from the game,” says Ramova. “From the goofy colors, odd sound cuts to the senseless plot.” Enjoy! We know you will! Bravo, Michael!

Exclusive: Adi Shankar Talks Castlevania Series for Netflix

0
0

Once we announced yesterday that a new series based on the video game Castlevania is heading to Netflix, it didn’t take long for the news to spread like a wildfire. So we quickly got in touch with producer Adi Shankar to get an early look into the direction the series is headed.

He couldn’t say much, obviously, but what he did have for us has us very excited.

Adi Shankar

I’m a gamer. I’m a comic book guy and I’m a video game guy. It’s amazing to see all of the comic book tales beyond just origin stories get treated with respect. Video game adaptations are where comic book adaptations were in the mid-Eighties. We still need our Blade moment, our X-Men moment, our Spider-Man, and then our Avengers moment. ‘Castlevania’ will be the best video game adaptation to date.

“Castlevania” Season 1, Part 1 will be coming to Netflix in 2017!

Inspired by the classic video game series, “Castlevania” is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert, and Adi Shankar.

EFM 2017: First Look at Elle Fanning as Mary Shelley

A new film titled Mary Shelley is on its way, and while it might not be a horror project per se, we’d be remiss in our duties if we didn’t bring it to your attention given the subject matter.  Elle Fanning stars as the titular author, and THR provides us with our first look at her in character.

Previously titled A Storm in the Stars, Mary Shelley is directed by Saudi filmmaker Haifaa al-Mansour, who rose to fame with her debut feature, Wadjda.

The film tells the story of the author’s early relationship with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and also stars Douglas Booth, Bel Powley, Maisie Williams, Joanne Froggatt, and Tom Sturridge.

HanWay Films is handling international sales and distribution and is jointly representing U.S. rights with UTA. The company is screening new footage to buyers in Berlin at the now under way European Film Market.

Below is a portrait of the real Shelley by Richard Rothwell; see any resemblance with Fanning?  Let us know what you think in the comments!

Stephen King’s It Shooting for an R Rating; Promises to Be Scary

Music to our ears, I tell ya! That’s what the latest coming out of the camp of Stephen King’s It are promising fans, and we couldn’t be more delighted.

Recently Collider caught up with producer Dan Lin, who had the following to share regarding the upcoming theatrical two-parter.

It is a rated-R movie. If you’re going to make a ‘rated-R movie,’ you have to fully embrace what it is, and you have to embrace the source material. It is a scary clown that’s trying to kill kids. So of course that’s going to be a rated-R movie. The kids are amazing. You very much get a Stand by Me vibe as far as their camaraderie and the way they joke with each other and that they really care for each other. They do have a scary clown that’s taken over the town of Derry, so it’s going to be rated R.

The Losers’ Club + 1 (when you see it)

Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Hamilton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Sophia Lillis star with Bill Skarsgard, who portrays Pennywise. In addition, creature performer Javier Botet has signed on as The Leper, and Owen Teague plays Patrick Hocksetter, part of a group of bullies who torment The Losers’ Club.

Andy Muschietti directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman and Chase Palmer. Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg, and Barbara Muschietti produce. The story will be spread across two films.

Synopsis:
In a small town in Maine, seven children known as The Losers’ Club come face to face with life problems, bullies, and a monster that takes the shape of a clown called Pennywise.

Syfy Greenlights Two More Seasons of Channel Zero

“Candle Cove,” the first installment of Syfy’s “Channel Zero” anthology series, was a bit uneven but pretty fun overall. With Season 2, “No-End House,” heading our way this fall, the network is already looking ahead and has greenlit two more!

From the Press Release:
Syfy and Universal Cable Productions (UCP) today announced a pick-up of two more installments of the critically acclaimed horror anthology series “CHANNEL ZERO.” In addition, UCP has signed an overall deal with the series’ executive producer, Nick Antosca (“Hannibal,” “Teen Wolf”). Under the agreement Antosca will develop and produce scripted programming with UCP for the NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment portfolio and for external networks and streaming services.

Each installment of the “CHANNEL ZERO” anthology is based on a “creepypasta” (user-generated horror stories published online). The first installment in the anthology series, the six-part ‘CANDLE COVE,’ landed on several “Best TV of 2016” lists and centered on Kris Straub’s unnerving story of one man’s obsessive recollection of a mysterious children’s television program from the 1980s.

“NO-END HOUSE,” the second six-hour installment, is set to premiere on Syfy in October 2017. It follows Brian Russell’s story of Margot (Amy Forsyth, “The Path”), a young woman who, along with her friends, visits the No-End House – a bizarre house of horrors consisting of a series of increasingly disturbing rooms.

“’CHANNEL ZERO’ certainly hit a nerve with ‘CANDLE COVE,’” said Chris McCumber, President, USA and Syfy. “We look forward to creeping everyone out again this fall with ‘NO-END HOUSE’ – and can’t wait to see what nightmares Nick has in store for the future.”

“Nick delivered a truly haunting and unpredictable first installment of ‘CHANNEL ZERO’ and was embraced by fans and critics alike,” said Jeff Wachtel, President, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “He is a fresh, passionate talent with a unique vision — precisely what we strive to cultivate here at UCP. We’re fortunate to have him in the family and look forward to developing new projects together.”

“Making ‘CHANNEL ZERO’s’ ‘CANDLE COVE’ and ‘NO-END HOUSE’ has been a terrific experience,” said Nick Antosca. “Universal Cable Productions and Syfy gave us a unique space to adapt weird cult horror stories and showcase some of the most talented independent directors out there. I’m so excited to bring more of these stories to the screen.”

Novelist, screenwriter, and TV writer Antosca (“Hannibal,” “Teen Wolf”) returns as executive producer, showrunner, and writer for both newly ordered installments alongside executive producer Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra), with Universal Cable Productions as the studio. Before “CHANNEL ZERO” Antosca was a writer and producer on “Hannibal.” He has written five books, including The Girlfriend Game, Fires, and Midnight Picnic, which won a Shirley Jackson Award.

Antosca joins UCP’s roster of overall deals with A-list and top-notch emerging talent, including Sam Esmail, who is at work on Season 3 of the Golden Globe- and Emmy Award-winning “Mr. Robot”; James Frey’s Full Fathom Five, which is currently producing the supernatural horror-drama pilot “The Haunted” for Syfy; and Doug Liman’s Hypnotic, which recently produced the teleportation drama pilot “Impulse” with UCP for YouTube Red.

First Stranger Things 2 Plot Details Revealed; New Image

0
0

Finally the veil of mystery is lifted on what to expect plot-wise from Netflix’s “Stranger Things 2,” as Entertainment Weekly has landed the skinny and a new image. Read on!

“Stranger Things” Season 2 begins nearly a year after the first installment, on Halloween in Hawkins, Indiana. Will has rejoined his pals after being rescued from [last season’s] alternate dimension, the Upside Down. But all is not well with young Mr. Byers, as evidenced by the slug he coughed up in season 1’s final moments. His ultra-fraught mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), is attempting to make things stable for Will and his brother, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), and she is dating an old high school classmate, Bob (The Goonies’ Sean Astin).

Meanwhile, Hopper (David Harbour) is attempting to keep all the events of last season, like the disappearance of Barb, a secret in order to protect Joyce and the kids.

Shaking up the dynamics in Hawkins is the arrival of another brother-sister duo, Billy (Dacre Montgomery) and Max (Sadie Sink). While Max becomes pals with the boys and attracts romantic interest from Lucas and Dustin (played by actors Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo), Billy doesn’t exactly make friends.

The rift to the Upside Down remains open, as does the lab, now run by the seemingly friendly Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser). Show creators, The Duffer Brothers, are coy about what types of monsters we’ll see this season, but according to Matt, the show will be exploring “different kinds of horror.” And then there’s Eleven…

Hit up the above link for more.

“Stranger Things” Season 2 takes place in 1984, one year after the events of the first season. Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Brett Gelman, Linnea Berthelsen, Dacre Montgomery, Rob Morgan, and Sadie Sink all join the returning Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, and Charlie Heaton. Look for it to return on Halloween 2017.

About “Stranger Things 2”: A year after Will’s return, everything seems back to normal… but a darkness lurks just beneath the surface, threatening all of Hawkins.

Comedian Jordan Peele teamed with Blumhouse Productions on his horror film Get Out, and we now have an official image gallery and a new poster for you.

From the Press Release:
In Universal Pictures’ Get Out, a speculative thriller from Blumhouse (producers of The Visit, Insidious series and The Gift) and the mind of Jordan Peele, when a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation.

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams, Girls), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener, Captain Phillips) and Dean (Bradley Whitford, The Cabin in the Woods).

At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

Equal parts gripping thriller and provocative commentary, Get Out is written and directed by Peele (Key and Peele) and produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, as well as Sean McKittrick (Donnie Darko, The Box), Peele and Edward H. Hamm Jr. (The Box, Bad Words). The film also stars Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men series), Milton “Lil Rel” Howery (The Carmichael Show), Betty Gabriel (The Purge: Election Year), Marcus Henderson (Pete’s Dragon) and Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton).
