Heaven And Hell Collide Again in The Unseen Darkness Rising

Back in 2015 we interviewed Bryan Revell about his new comic The Unseen, which was inspired by visions that he experienced after he committed suicide and was dead for a few minutes before being resuscitated and entering a coma for a few days. You can buy both physical and digital copies of the first volume of The Unseen on Amazon.

He’s now completed the second volume in the series, The Unseen “Darkness Rising”, and is raising funds on Creative Jump to get it printed ahead of its release date on May 5. Seeing as Bryan’s pretty much the only writer with first hand knowledge of the afterlife, I think it’s pretty important that you fund this book.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Hilo, Hawaii, be sure to visit Bryan’s store Enjoy Comics, and learn more about his future titles on the site of his official publishing company.

The Unseen “Darkness Rising”
We are excited to bring you the second installment in the epic supernatural The Unseen series. The book is already finished and awaiting printing, and that’s where we need your help!

The Battle for the Sea of Souls is at an end. The time has come; Armageddon. God creates a new breed of angels. Since the dawn of man they have been influencing us, guiding us and protecting us. Once human, now immortal and carrying their lingering human emotions and free will, they are empowered beyond imagination to usher in the end of the world as we know it.

However, the devil plans for his own fallen to destroy or enslave the human race so that he may rule over all kingdoms. The rules that have applied for so many centuries are now void. To the victor go the spoils.

As the world plummets into sin and destruction, the only hope for our salvation is a pact of rebels lead by The Last Angels, each with their own gifts and powers from all walks of life. The rebels’ lives collide and intertwine here in a post-apocalyptic New York City. The evidence of the realm beyond the veil becomes so evident that no one can deny its existence. Nor the powers within, now free to act without limits or restraint, who wage war over us; The Sea of Souls.

Resident Evil: Vendetta To Receive a Nationwide US Theatrical Release

Resident Evil fans are currently taking to the streets to celebrate the success of the 7th game and the end of the live-action film series, and now they have something else to smile about: the upcoming animated film Resident Evil: Vendetta will receive a theatrical release in the US. This is impressive when you consider that the first two CGI films went straight to DVD outside of Japan.

This news was confirmed in the upload of the trailer to Sony Pictures’ Youtube channel (although aside from a few minor changes, it’s basically the same trailer as this earlier one). No theater count was given, and while I would assume that this will only be limited release, the use of the word “nationwide” suggests otherwise.

Produced by The Grudge creator Takashi Shimizu, and directed by “Ultraman X’s” Takanori Tsujimoto, we’ll know for certain how many screens Vendetta will be playing in when it arrives this summer.

Resident Evil Vendetta – In Theaters Nationwide Summer 2017
3rd installment of the CG animated film directly connected to the Resident Evil game’s story. Starring fan favorite characters Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield, and a comeback of Rebecca Chambers from Resident Evil 0. Executive Produced by Takashi Shimizu for horror mastery, and produced by Marza Animation Planet currently working with Columbia Pictures for Sonic.

Why a Nosferatu Remake is a Great Idea

Nosferatu eine Symphonie des Grauens, the 1922 silent classic of German Expressionism Horror directed by F.W. Murnau as an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula, is quite possible my favorite horror film. Ever since I first watched it at the age of 11, the images crafted by Murnau and co. have been seared into my mind, like some fantastic nightmare continuously informing my perception of cinema.

The power of Nosferatu lies in its imagery. The story is basic and a lot of the acting is OTT, but there remains a purity to what we see on screen. Devoid of all the refined elements that later came along with technological advancements in film, there’s a focus on primal fear brought on through some of the most horrifying, nightmarish visions put on celluloid – the shadow of the vampire ascending the stairs, or rising stiffly from his coffin, to name just two.

count orlok creeps up the stairs

Murnau’s knack for expert mood-setting through framing, along with an infamously unnerving performance by Max Shreck as Count Orlok, came together to create one of horror cinema’s first and most sustainable classics. Its influence, particularly through its stylistic elements of expressionism, can be seen in Film Noir, Science Fiction and countless horror movies.

So why then am I so in favor of a remake, a concept dreaded by some? Not only am I in favor of it, I’m actively supporting the idea.

The truth is, there are horror films with more complex narratives than Nosferatu, more in depth characters, mind-blowing effects and captivating dialogue (duh!). However, not many pieces of horror filmmaking can match Murnau’s eye for unearthly, iconographic images of terror. In its stripped back, early cinematic nature, it represents film and the horror movie in its purest form. Who wants to argue that these qualities are something not to be passed down, used by interesting filmmakers in equally refreshing and interesting ways? Sure, they could do that with a completely original concept, but there’s something quite powerful about certain ideas, characters and pictures being timeless in their appeal.

Take a look at the talent behind the planned remake – Robert Eggers, who wrote and directed last year’s incredible The Witch. Aside from being one of the current decade’s best horror films (so far), The Witch is lyrical, visually stunning, slow-burning and most importantly scary. On the strength of that movie alone, one has to be optimistic that any sort of reimagining of Nosferatu is in the right hands. Eggers is a fan of the film, and has been since he was a child. That mix doesn’t always work out, but understanding what made the original so compelling is a perfect starting point.

Robert Egger's The Witch

Let’s not forget that Nosferatu has already been redone once before, in Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), which in itself is a prime example of how a remake can be fantastic when done the right way, by the right people.

One of the most promising horror filmmakers, retelling the tale of a timeless horror classic that is nearly 100-years-old, and doing so after the best part of a decade in which mainstream vampire movies (mostly) left a lot to be desired. Never mind wanting this movie – we need it.

Comedian Jordan Peele teamed with Blumhouse Productions on his horror film Get Out, and if you’re in Boston we now have your chance to see the flick on us!

CLICK HERE FOR YOUR PASSES FOR THE FEBRUARY 21st SCREENING!

From the Press Release:
In Universal Pictures’ Get Out, a speculative thriller from Blumhouse (producers of The Visit, Insidious series and The Gift) and the mind of Jordan Peele, when a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation.

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams, Girls), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener, Captain Phillips) and Dean (Bradley Whitford, The Cabin in the Woods).

At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

Equal parts gripping thriller and provocative commentary, Get Out is written and directed by Peele (Key and Peele) and produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, as well as Sean McKittrick (Donnie Darko, The Box), Peele and Edward H. Hamm Jr. (The Box, Bad Words). The film also stars Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men series), Milton “Lil Rel” Howery (The Carmichael Show), Betty Gabriel (The Purge: Election Year), Marcus Henderson (Pete’s Dragon) and Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton).

Voodoo (2017)

$

Starring Samantha Stewart, Ruth Reynolds, Dominic Matteucci

Directed by Tom Costabile

The art of shocking an audience into submission is a valuable one – be it with some hedonistic sex, gratuitous violence, or the combination of both. Now ramp those aspects up past the “10” marker on your decency meter, and throw in a little Satanic alchemy for good measure, and we’ll just see which teflon souls are willing to stick around for the duration.

Now I’m all in for a little debauchery with my unholiness, bu DAMMIT, did the ghouls from hell really feel the need to capture all of their exploits in first-person POV? In director Tom Costabile’s ultra-bizarre film Voodoo, the audience gets taken on a fiery ride into hell (more like the inner-workings of a Halloween attraction), and we see just what becomes of an innocent lass once she’s touched the flames of Hades. Samantha Stewart stars as Dani, a country gal who’s taking a break from her byzantine existence in New Orleans, and lands in sunny Los Angeles to party it up with her bff, Stacey (Reynolds). Together the two (along with us, whether we want to experience it or not), carouse around the city, exalting in inebriated, horny revelry…and it’s all caught on that damned camera that NEVER manages to run out of juice. For the majority of the film’s first half, we’re apprised on everything that these two drink, want to sight-see, or guy they want to bang – it’s tedious, it’s time-consuming, and if it was laid out that way to make people care about either one of these characters, I’d have to say that it was a failure.

In the middle of the booze-fueled vacation video from hell (don’t worry, we’re getting there), it comes to pass that Dani’s boyfriend had a former relationship with a voodoo priestess while living in New Orleans. Seems now that the ex-girlfriend isn’t too happy about Dani’s presence and swears to get her – can’t lie, but I’d probably fill the back of my shorts if some hoo-doo shaman threatened my safety. As we pass by the middle-mark of the movie, we’re immediately tossed on our keesters in a display that can simply be described as “WTF?” Dani ventures into her friend’s living room one night and is immediately heaved into a scene right out of Dante’s Inferno: possessed souls feasting on newborn children (no kidding), blood, breasts, growling beasts…the kind of stuff that generally would make the laid-back horror set want to quick-change their DVD out of their players and opt for something safe and PG-13-like. Even ol’ Beelzebub gets in on the sexual assault…once again, all the while that damn camera is a’ rollin – and while we’re at it, exactly what unlucky demon from Hell got the short straw and was saddled with the responsibility of filming Satan doing the horizontal mambo? Aah, the possibilities are endless, much like the last 35 minutes or so of this film, whereas our leading lady must’ve had a very large supply of throat lozenges on hand, because she screams…a lot. No, believe me when I tell you, she screams A LOT – if you can make it until the end credits without plugging your ears at least once, good on you. We never truly know why Dani was subjected to such torture, nor do any of us care, and at the risk of sounding like a completely disgruntled fan, this movie simply had no redeeming quality to it, other than Stewart is as cute as a button, even when screaming incessantly or being tortured by the unholiest of unholies.

I won’t murder this film strictly based on its visuals – some odious, some reprehensible, but all in all they were created in order to shock and awe. Whether or not you can see past the paper-thin plot, suspect acting, gut-wrenching scenes or that damned camera that NEVER seems to get put down, then by all means, enjoy this film. If any of the above happen to vex you in any fashion, skip this Voodoo by all counts.

According to Variety, the next cast members to be gobbled up by our trio of giant-sized monsters will be Jake Lacy (HBO’s “Girls”) and Breanne Hill (San Andreas). They join the previously announced Joe Manganiello, Marley Shelton, Naomie Harris, and of course Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Johnson will play an animal-loving hero who is the world’s only hope, while Harris, the Oscar-nominated Moonlight actress, is on board as a geneticist with a moral streak. Manganiello will portray the leader of a private military group and Shelton will play a scientist and astronaut. No word yet on Lacy or Hill’s roles.

Brad Peyton is directing Rampage, which reunites Johnson, Peyton and producer Beau Flynn, the team behind San Andreas and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Like the video game, the film will feature three creatures — a monstrously transformed gorilla, lizard and wolf — who wreak havoc on North American cities and landmarks.

Ryan Engle wrote the original draft, with work done by Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal. Adam Sztykiel did the most current revisions.

Rampage is set to release April 20, 2018.

Another Full Moon ClasSICK is on its way to Blu-ray high definition, and if you’ve ever seen The Creeps you know that big scary things can come in little tiny packages.

From the Press Release:
Undersized, Undead and Angry. Dracula. Frankenstein. The Werewolf. The Mummy. In an experiment of the maddest kind of science, these four classic monsters of film and literature are brought back to life…but something goes wrong. Though they look and act exactly as they you’d think they’d look, the creepy quartet emerge as half their normal size. Now, they’re three feet tall…and not happy at all.

From Full Moon founder, producer and director Charles Band, comes 1997’s THE CREEPS (aka DEFORMED MONSTERS), one of the studios most beloved and requested titles. Originally filmed and exhibited in 3D, this new Blu-ray is culled from the original negative and presented in a stunning anamorphic, 2D HD 1080p transfer, all the better to appreciate Adolfo (Stuart Gordon’s PIT AND THE PENDULUM) Bartoli’s rich 35mm cinematography and Gabe (FROM BEYOND, BASKET CASE 2) Bartalos’ amazing practical make-up FX.

Filled with humor, horror, wit, style, sleaze and silliness, THE CREEPS also offers one of legendary diminutive actor Phil (TROLL, LAND OF THE DEAD) Fondacaro’s greatest roles as Count Dracula, one of the most effective – and underrated – portrayals of the vampire in horror film history.

THE CREEPS is available on Blu-ray on February 21. Special features include original Full Moon trailers and a vintage THE CREEPS Videozone behind-the-scenes featurette.

Subscribers to Shudder are in for another treat next week as We Go On is coming exclusively to the streaming service on February 23rd before hitting DVD and Blu-ray in April.

From the Press Release:
After riveting festival audiences around the world, the chilling WE GO ON is coming to home video this spring. The critically acclaimed thriller, which Fangoria declared as “legitimately scary and unpredictable” and Ain’t It Cool News called “a spooky tale with a strong emotional core,” debuts on Blu-ray and DVD on April 4, 2017, from Lightyear Entertainment through Momentum Pictures/Sony Home Entertainment. Special features on both formats include Directors’ Commentary.

The second feature film from YELLOWBRICKROAD creators Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton, WE GO ON tells the story of one man’s quest to find out if there is more out there after we die. Paralyzed by his fear of dying, Miles Grissom (Clark Freeman) offers a cash reward to the first person who can show him a ghost, an angel, a demon – anything that can prove that we go on after our deaths. He narrows the responses down to three viable candidates – a scientist, a medium, and a worldly entrepreneur. Along with his fiercely protective mother (Annette O’Toole), he embarks on an adventure that will spiral into an unthinkable nightmare.

“We’re excited that fans across the U.S. and Canada will be able to see WE GO ON no matter where they live, now that it’s coming to home video,” said Arnie Holland, Lightyear CEO. “It’s the kind of movie that makes you think and compels you to watch again and again. The questions posed in the movie about our mortality and the afterlife are what we all think about at one time or another.”

Directed by Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland (YELLOWBRICKROAD), with screenplay by Mitton, WE GO ON stars Annette O’Toole (“Smallville,” SUPERMAN III), Clark Freeman (YELLOWBRICKROAD), John Glover (SCROOGED, GREMLINS 2, “Smallville”), Giovanna Zacarías (THE LEGEND OF ZORRO), Jay Dunn, and Laura Heisler (YELLOWBRICKROAD).

Mia Goth Talks Suspiria Remake and How it Will Shock Fans

$

We recently caught up with Mia Goth while doing press for this weekend’s A Cure For Wellness, and the actor had some surprising things to say about the upcoming remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria.

“Well, what I can say about that is that I think people are going to be really pleasantly surprised to realize it’s really not a remake at all,” said Goth. “I think people are going to be shocked; it’s a nod of the hat to Dario Argento’s version of Suspiria, but we really do take it to a completely different place. Well, I say that and I think I’m going to be giving a lot away but Luca has got a great eye for esthetics, he’s a very tasteful person, he really knows what he wants. It’s going to be visually stunning.”

The remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian horror classic has been a passion project for director Luca Guadagnino for some time. It stars Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Mia Goth and is based on a young American ballet dancer who travels to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover it is something far more sinister and supernatural. She becomes increasingly terrified after a series of gruesome murders ensue and she slowly unravels the dark history of the academy.

Suspiria is written by David Kajganich, who adapts the “remake” from Argento and Daria Nicolodi’s original script.

Frenesy Film Company, Mythology Entertainment, First Sun Films, and Memo Films produce. Guadagnino, Brad Fischer, Kajganich, Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Marco Morabito, Gabriele Moratti, William Sherak, and Silvia Venturini Fendi are producers on the title while James Vanderbilt, Paul Deason, Massimiliano Violante, and Carlo Antonelli exec produce.

Amazon Studios picked up the project last year for worldwide distribution rights and is financing production.

Argento’s original, which was laden with the supernatural, witches, and a lot of blood, marked the beginning of the director’s “Three Mothers” trilogy, which was followed by Inferno (1980) and The Mother of Tears (2007).

Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo Team for The Raid Redux

Well, if anyone at all is gonna end up doing this, we’re glad it’s Joe Carnahan. Deadline is reporting that Carnahan has come aboard to write and direct, and Frank Grillo has been set to star in The Raid, a new take on the martial arts film franchise launched by Gareth Evans in 2012, which got a sequel in 2014.

The film will be produced by Carnahan and Grillo’s production outfit WarParty and XYZ Films, the latter of which co-produced the originals with PT Merantau Films. Evans will executive produce the new take.

“I am extremely excited about Frank and I boarding this property and hopefully doing something fresh and inventive with it,” Carnahan said. “The original is masterful, so we’ve given ourselves a pretty big mountain to summit. But I have great faith in the story and approach to the material that we’ve taken.”

Said XYZ: “Joe and Frank are ideal creative partners for this film. They want to pay homage to The Raid, not do a paint-by-numbers remake.”

More as it comes.

In a shocker of a reveal on tonight’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” co-creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy casually dropped the news that the upcoming Season 7 of “American Horror Story” is going to revolve around… the 2016 election! As if we didn’t get our fill of that already!

In any event, if anyone can make that fiasco into a true “horror story,” it’s Murphy. He said, “I don’t have a title, but the season that we begin shooting in June is going to be about the election that we just went through,” tying in with the previous news that the new installment will be set in the modern day.

And yes, Trump could well be a character. Murphy teased, “Maybe,” when asked by Cohen about it.

The only other thing we know for sure is that series regulars Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are returning. Stay tuned.

A couple of weeks ago on Brainwaves Horror and Paranormal Talk Radio, our own Mr. Dark brought to our attention the following completely strange theory of paranormal investigators Greg Newkirk and Dana Matthews: Is the reason no one has been able to capture definitive physical or clear photographic evidence of Sasquatch because it is actually a ghost haunting the forests?

That’s all we needed to hear as this is a topic for an entire show for sure. That being said, Greg and Dana of Week in Weird joined us for a howling mad night of Sasquatchploitation and more! Strap in!
