We told you a few weeks ago about the audiobook The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, written by Jennifer Lynch and performed by Sheryl Lee, which is heading our way in May.  To make sure you’re keeping it on your radar, Audible has released a few excerpts today.

Synopsis:
Lifeless and wrapped in plastic. This is how Sheryl Lee was first introduced as “Laura Palmer” in the cult television classic “Twin Peaks.” Now, Sheryl returns to voice Laura’s darkest secrets in the audiobook event that fans of the show have long awaited.

Commissioned by series creators Mark Frost and David Lynch and written by Lynch’s daughter, Jennifer – who was told she was one of “three air-breathing mammals to know the identity of Laura’s killer” – The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer became an integral part of the “Twin Peaks” canon.

The diary chronicles Laura’s life from age 12 to her death at 17 and provides a harrowing backstory to the event that set the entire series in motion. In intimate diary entries, Laura goes from a happy and naïve tween to a tormented soul posing behind the phony smile of homecoming queen. Plagued by visions of a creepy man with long hair – a demonic presence she comes to know as “Bob” – Laura falls into a world of drug addiction, sexual promiscuity, and prostitution to escape. But as she’s swallowed deeper and deeper into the abyss, Laura is forced to question the reality of who and what Bob really is.

With hidden Easter eggs, glimpses at the origins of principal characters, and clues to the identity of her eventual killer, The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer is required listening for diehard fans of the original show and essential background for the 2017 revival.

The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer is being released on May 2nd; you can pre-order your copy today from Audible Studios or Amazon!

Jason Goes to Hell – Petition Launched to Get a Proper Unrated Release

When it comes to home video releases and the Friday the 13th franchise, it’s easy to feel like the powers that be hate us. From the headache inducing 3D release of Friday the 13th Part III in 3D to the lackluster Friday box set which was home for some strange reason to the R-rated cut of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday instead of the existing Unrated cut.

Speaking of which, the only real reason to watch JGTH, (other than the bizarro homoerotic shaving) is to see the film’s plethora of gore effects which were heavily trimmed to garner the R-rating that it was given. Lord only knows who made this boneheaded decision but alas… unless you have the DVD you’re screwed.

Now, fans are taking it into their own hands to right this Final Friday wrong as a new petition, aimed at Paramount, Warner Bros., and Scream Factory, has launched via Change.org to do the film justice…

Jared Johnson and Brandon Scott Murphree are asking for everyone’s help, to bring attention to having Jason Goes To Hell made in a true “Director’s Cut”. Adam Marcus, director and co-writer of Jason Goes To Hell, has expressed interest in this being made. Many scenes were cut and unused during filming, including key special FX scenes showcasing the incredible work of KNB FX. Sadly, they never made the final cut. These scenes are strong contributions to this film and, best of all, they were shot. The footage exists, in fact many scenes were edited properly… nearly fully finished before being cut; and now we hope to have them cut back in to a definitive Jason Goes To Hell Uncut Director’s Cut the way Adam Marcus originally intended. We ask you to sign this petition in hopes we can pick up a company to work out this project and bring it to light! Please sign and help us get the attention that Jason Goes To Hell deserves!

The Second Half of Stephen King’s It Will Supposedly Start Shooting in a Few Weeks

The first half of the two-part movie event for Stephen King’s It is currently in post-production and already had test screenings in the middle of last December. While it wasn’t certain if the film would receive a sequel (nothing was confirmed), it appears that such a movie was always in the plans and will in fact begin filming later this month!

According to MyEntertainmentWorld, the second half of It will begin filming in Toronto, Ontario, on March 17th. This film will specifically deal with the adult portion of the story.

The synopsis on the site reads: A promise made twenty-eight years ago calls seven adults to reunite in Derry, Massachusetts, where as teenagers they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Unsure that their Losers’ Club vanquished the creature all those years ago, the seven had vowed to return to Derry if IT should ever reappear.

It’ll be interesting to see how the first half performs, especially with the fervor and adoration for “Stranger Things” still in the air. Such a story may very well resonate with audiences who may not usually go for horror but fell in love with the Duffer Brothers’ spellbinding Netflix series. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see when It hits theaters on September 8th!

In the first half of It, Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Hamilton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Sophia Lillis star with Bill Skarsgard, who portrays Pennywise. In addition, creature performer Javier Botet has signed on as The Leper, and Owen Teague plays Patrick Hocksetter, part of a group of bullies who torment The Losers’ Club.

Andy Muschietti directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman and Chase Palmer. Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg, and Barbara Muschietti produce.

Synopsis:
In a small town in Maine, seven children known as The Losers’ Club come face to face with life problems, bullies, and a monster that takes the shape of a clown called Pennywise.

So We Might See Clinton and Trump in American Horror Story Season 7 After All!

Despite a previous statement from exec producer Ryan Murphy that in the upcoming Season 7 of “American Horror Story” we “will not see [Donald] Trump and [Hillary] Clinton as characters on the show,” things seem to have changed slightly.

Now Murphy has told E! Online that they WILL be portrayed in the next chapter of FX’s popular anthology series, which will begin on the night of the 2016 Presidential election.

“I think people literally think Sarah Paulson is playing Hillary Clinton,” Murphy told the site, “and I wanted to clarify that that is not true. ‘Horror Story’ is always about allegory, so the election is allegory. It’s our jumping off point. It is about the election we just went through and what happened on that night and the fallout of that night, which to many people, from all sides of the camps, is a horror story. And you know, that show is always so fun when it’s about the zeitgeist and what we’re doing now.”

When asked if Clinton or Trump had been cast yet, Murphy replied: “No, not yet. We’re halfway through the writing and not yet. But it’s really, really fun. It starts on election night is all I’ll say… It’s very scary that night for many people. It’s fun; you will like it. It’s really a season that will have a lot of people interested, and I think there’s something for everybody in that season.”

Stay tuned, campers, for further updates that will undoubtedly contradict everything you just read!

Season 7 begins filming in June. So far the only confirmed returning “AHS” regulars are Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters.

Here Are More Details on the Upcoming Piranha JPN: Summer of the Piranha

The updates keep coming in regarding Japan’s take on the Piranha franchise and we’re thrilled to bring you some more news! Let’s start with what we already know, shall we? The movie is being produced by Hisako Tsukuba (who worked on every entry under the name Chako van Leeuwen) and it markes the first new entry since 2012’s Piranha 3DD, which was directed by John Gulager. Secondly, we confirmed that Roger Corman will be acting as the executive producer and has already committed a sizable contribution to the budget.

Now for some new information! With information translated by Yuki Morita, who starred in Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla and 2015’s Bad Building, we learned that Piranha JPN is the official Japanese title while Summer of the Piranha is the international English name. The film is in pre-production and they’re currently searching for a director, cast, and crew. That being said, the expected shoot date is this summer in Japan.

But do you want to hear something really interesting? The design of the piranha’s is going to be new for this film! Supposedly, they’re going to be a mixture of your standard piranha’s and tuna fish. The joke here is that the Japanese people adore eating tuna and now the tables will turn!

Since no cast has been confirmed for the film, who would you like to see star in Piranha JPN: Summer of the Piranha? Personally, I’m always a fan of Takeshi Kitano, although I have a hard time believing he’d play in such a film. You tell me in the comments who you’d love to see in such a film!

Get Ready for a Horrific Journey Through the Land of Oz

I have always maintained that The Wizard of Oz is a scary friggin’ film. Nightmarish, even! It’s sequel Return to Oz was even more horrifying and I’ve long wondered if someone would ever truly indulge in the horrors of Oz. That time is now.

THR is reporting that New Line Cinema has scooped up a pitch from writer Mike Van Waes for an original horror film set in the world of The Wizard of Oz.

The project, which is in the early development stages, will have ties to the universe created in the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum that was adapted into the classic 1939 film starring Judy Garland.

Baum’s story — about a young girl and her dog who are swept away to a magical world where she teams up with the Lion, the Tinman and the Scarecrow to face off against the Wicked Witch of the West — has been adapted numerous times over the years and also used as inspiration for various film, TV and stage stories.

Meg is Gonna Have to Tread Water a Little Longer Than Expected

We’ve been hearing about the giant shark movie Meg for a while now and it seems that we’re going to have a wait a little bit longer. Warner Bros. has announced that they’ve shifted the released date for the giant shark film from March 2nd, 2018 to August 10th, 2018. It’s only a few months but it puts the film directly at the end of the summer blockbuster season, which could make it either the last big hurrah film that everyone needs to see or it’ll be the dud that no one catches because they’re too busy getting ready for Fall and all that it entails. Furthermore, this new date puts Meg square against Universal’s Scarface remake/reboot, so it’ll be interesting to see if people choose a giant man-eating shark or a crazed drug dealer. Either way, lots of people are going to die.

Related Story: Meg Adaptation to Be Edge-of-Your-Seat Scary

Meg is produced by di Bonaventura Pictures, Apelles Entertainment, Maeday Productions, Inc., and Flagship Entertainment, in association with Beijing Digital Impression (BDI) Film. Flagship is the Hong Kong-domiciled, Beijing-based production joint venture among Warner, China Media Capital, and Hong Kong’s Television Broadcasts (TVB.) Gravity Pictures is a China Media Capital subsidiary. Jon Turteltaub (the National Treasure movies, Last Vegas) directs.

The story involves a deep-sea submersible attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct. The vessel lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific with its crew trapped inside. The screenplay is written by Dean Georgaris along with Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, based on the New York Times best-selling book by Steve Alten.

In addition to Jason Statham and Li Bingbing, the cast includes Winston Chao, Masi Oka, New Zealander Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Robert Taylor, and Sophia Shuya Cai.

The Great Wall Crumbles Down at the Box Office

$

It’s never easy to report on a film failing at the box office, because I always hate to see hard work and dedication resulting in people losing money. But that’s exactly what’s happening with The Great Wall, which The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed will lose around $75 million. Legendary Entertainment, China Film Group and Le Vision Pictures will bare the brunt of this loss, with Universal, who funded around 25% of the overall budget, losing around $10 million.

In China, The Great Wall earned a huge $170,873,575 (thanks, Box Office Mojo). Director Zhang Yimou, who previously helmed such films as Curse of the Golden Flower and The Flowers of War, is a pretty huge name in China, which helped it to do well over there, but overseas it was essentially a flop. The US gross sits at only $36,572,815, whilst in other countries it didn’t fare much better, with the next highest territory being Russia, where it took $9,537,474. With a production budget of $150 plus marketing costs, its current worldwide gross of $302,772,815 (it’s expected to end its run with $320) officially makes The Great Wall a box office bomb.

It’s financial failure has also cast the possibility of future Chinese/US co-productions into doubt, because even the presence of an A-lister like Matt Damon didn’t prevent The Great Wall from being a bomb. The negative reviews were also a key factor in why it tanked in the US, although THR’s article ends with financial analyst Eric Handler predicting that one day Hollywood will discover the right formula to make Chinese co-productions become big hits, so there is yet hope I suppose.

Swamp Thing Whoops Ass In Injustice 2

One of Wes Craven’s early classics was the 1982 DC Comics adaptation Swamp Thing, which was followed by a sequel in 1989 and a live-action TV series from 1990-93 and an animated series in ’91. He also showed up in this year’s Justice League Dark, so needless to say he’s one of the most popular monsters in the DC Universe.

As you’d expect from a scientist-turned hulking green plant monster, Swamp Thing is a pretty formidable foe on the battlefield, as you can see in his gameplay videos from Injustice 2. Directed by Mortal Kombat’s Ed Boon, you’ll be able to unleash Swamp Thing against the likes of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Bane, Catwoman and more on when the game launches on May 16.

BTW, of you though that Swamp Thing and Marvel’s Man-Thing seemed remarkably similar, it might have something to do with the fact that Swamp Thing co-creator Len Wein and Man-Thing co-creator Gerry Conway were roommates for a time. I don’t want to accuse anyone of copying anyone, but go figure.

FrightFest has become an institution in the horror scene since its inception in the year 2000. Since then, the festival has been catering to the needs of genre fans in the UK and around the world by showcasing some of the best horrific and fantastical cinema out there, making it without a doubt one of the premier festivals of its kind on the entire planet.

But in recent years the brand has been broadening its appeal outwith the multiplex, with label FrightFest Presents bringing the experience to DVD and VOD platforms – meaning fans can enjoy some of the festival experience from the comfort of their own homes.

Additionally, the FrightFest empire has also recently expanded into books as well.  Their first release The FrightFest Guide to Exploitation Movies by acclaimed film journalist (and FrightFest co-founder) Alan Jones was a success and is well worth a read if you’re a connoisseur of cinematic sleaze.

Their follow-up looks like another enticing entry to their burgeoning canon and essential reading for monster enthusiasts. The FrightFest Guide to Monsters by legendary horror journalist and screenwriter Michael Gingold will explore screen monsters from the dawn of cinema to the present day; so if you’re a fan of Universal ghouls or city-crushing kaiju beasts – and everything in between – this promises to have it all.

From the Press Release:

FrightFest and FAB Press once again join forces to launch THE FRIGHTFEST GUIDE TO MONSTER MOVIES, which goes exclusively on sale during Horror Channel FrightFest 2017, Aug 24 – Aug 28. Following the success of The FrightFest Guide to Exploitation Movies, this is the second in a planned series of wide appeal books for both the curious spectator and the cult connoisseur,

Written by celebrated writer, editor & critic Michael Gingold, the book contains 200 of the most frightening, fantastical and fun monster film features. Starting in the silent era, it traces the history of the genre all the way through to the present day. The films are given detailed individual reviews, with fascinating facts and critical analysis.

There are the Universal Studios favourites such as Frankenstein’s Monster and the Mummy, the big bugs, atomic mutants and space invaders that terrorised the ’50s. Then there’s the kaiju of Japan, the full-colour fiends from Hammer and the ecological nightmares of the ’70s and ’80s, to the CG creatures and updated favourites of more recent years.

Cult-favourite filmmaker Frank Henenlotter, creator of some of the screen’s most idiosyncratic and bizarre beings, contributes a foreword, and it’s all illustrated with a ghoulish gallery of scary stills and petrifying posters representing the remarkable range of monstrous movies. Do you dare open the cover and confront the beasts within?

The official launch is at Horror Channel FrightFest, Cineworld, Leicester Square (24th to 28th August) The FrightFest exclusive hardcover will be on sale for just £20. The book’s international street date is 18 September 2017. Paperback price: £16.99 (UK) $24.95 (US)
