Rest in Peace: Elaine Fazio-Mercado

Elaine MercadoIt’s with a heavy heart that we report a great friend of our site and our Brainwaves radio show, Elaine Fazio-Mercado, has passed on at age 68 after a fight with cancer.

Elaine, who joined us on Brainwaves for our fourth episode back in June of 2016, passed on this past January.

Mercado, author of the book Grave’s End, lived in a VERY haunted house for several years before finally being able to move. She discussed her time there on the show with us and more. Beyond that Elaine worked as a nurse, and she had the strange knack of being able to brighten someone’s life with a smile or a laugh. She was a warm, sensitive person, the kind that makes us better just for knowing her.

We here at Dread Central would like to extend our sincerest of condolences to Elaine’s family members, friends, and constituents. Elaine… we sincerely hope that you’ve found the peace that you deserve and thank you for helping us all find ours when we were in need. Much love. You will be missed.

Red Hill Movies LLC has released the first poster for Johnny Gruesome, the upcoming horror thriller based on the award-winning novel by Gregory Lamberson (Slime City, Killer Rack), who directed the film adaptation in Western New York last July.

Johnny Gruesome is the story of a murdered high school student, Johnny Grissom, who returns from the grave for revenge in classic E.C. Comics fashion.  The poster features Anthony De La Torre (Lords of Chaos) as the title character in makeup created by Craig Lindberg (“Boardwalk Empire”).

Byron Brown II (The Romans) co-stars as Johnny’s guilt-wracked best friend, singer-songwriter Aprilann portrays Johnny’s girlfriend, and Michael DeLorenzo (star of TV’s “New York Undercover” and “Resurrection Boulevard”) plays his grief-stricken father.  The cast also includes Chris Modrzynski, Kim Piazza, Richard Lounello, and Madison Amey.

Lamberson co-produced Johnny Gruesome with Tamar Lamberson and John R. Renna, who has a role in the film. De La Torre serves as associate producer, and Erin Elizabeth Heald is the executive producer.  Chris Cosgrave and John Vincent (Freaked) created the visual effects, and Armand Petri and Joe Rozler are composing the score.  The soundtrack  includes songs from the Gruesome rock CD created by Dean Italiano and Giasone Italiano to promote the novel, which was based on the original screenplay Lamberson wrote in 1984.

Rest in Peace: Film Historian Robert Osborne

Today’s a sad day for the film business in general because we’ve just gotten word that one of the greatest film historians of our time, Robert Osborne, has passed away at age 84.

Anyone who’s ever watched a movie via Turner Classic Movies should be more than acquainted with Osborne as his knowledge of movies was nothing short of encyclopedic. The fondness and love for what he did for the industry is infectious to say the least, and he’s inspired generations of moviegoers to dig deeper and learn more.

All of us at Turner Classic Movies are deeply saddened by the death of Robert Osborne,” said Turner Classic Movies General Manager Jennifer Dorian. “Robert was a beloved member of the Turner family for more than 23 years. He joined us as an expert on classic films and grew to be our cherished colleague and esteemed ambassador for TCM.”

Robert was embraced by devoted fans who saw him as a trusted expert and friend. His calming presence, gentlemanly style, encycolpedic knowledge of film history, fervent support for film preservation, and highly personal interviewing style all combined to make him a truly world-class host. Robert’s contributions were fundamental in shaping TCM into what it is today, and we owe him a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.

We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to express our deepest sympathies to Robert’s friends, family members, and constituents. Thanks for all that you gave, sir. Rest easy!

We told you during our Sundance coverage that David Lowery’s film A Ghost Story found a home with A24 and today the studio has announced a July 7th release date for the film.

Filmed under the radar, the supernatural tale stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. Affleck plays “a spectral figure” who returns to his former home to watch over his grief-stricken lover, played by Mara.

Lowery, whose Ain’t Them Bodies Saints played at the 2013 festival, most recently directed Disney’s Pete’s Dragon. He also wrote A Ghost Story, which, according to sources, A24 acquired sight unseen. The film is produced by Toby Halbrooks, James M. Johnston, and Adam Donaghey.

The film tells the tale of a ghost and the house he haunts. Check out some new eye-candy below.

The Festival will host screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City, and at Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah from January 19 through 29, 2017.

The indie from Archstone Entertainment and Alt House Productions is set to begin shooting in July in Los Angeles. Ian Holt, who co-authored Dracula: The Undead, the 2009 sequel to Bram Stroker’s Dracula, penned the screenplay.

Rourke, will play Dr. Elder, a prominent psychiatrist at a state-run hospital who wrestles with madness and a dark supernatural force as he races to stop an escaped patient from butchering five people held hostage in a remote house.

Archstone’s Scott Martin and Michael Slifkin are producing with Michael Alden, Michael Kuciak, and Ian Holt of Alt House. Nathan Reid is executive producer. Deadtime Stories (Blu-ray/DVD)

Deadtime StoriesStarring Scott Valentine, Nicole Picard, Matt Mitler, Cathryn de Prume

Directed by Jeffrey Delman

Distributed by Scream Factory

Whether he is actually a blood relative or not everyone seems that have “that uncle” who, because he is not a parent, lacks the mental filtration most adults employ. His jokes are a little crude, he is more permissive when it comes to “having fun”, and his stories are usually of the not-so-wholesome variety – and sometimes, when mom and dad need a night out on the town, he is charged with watching over their little tikes despite a clear aversion to playing parent. This sort of awkward avuncular scenario lays the groundwork for Deadtime Stories (1986), an underrated little gem of an anthology, featuring three twisted fairytales that have been updated to reflect then-modern times. While none of the three segments stand out as particularly well done, the overall film has a strong D.I.Y. ethos; that homebrew quality suggesting that, even though it might not be the best horror has to offer, the folks behind the lens were fully committed to making the most out of their project. Think less Creepshow (1982) and more From a Whisper to a Scream (1987).

Little Brian’s (Brian DePersia) parents are out for the night and he is left in the care of dear old Uncle Mike (Michael Mesmer), the perennial bachelor type who wants nothing more than to put his nephew to bed so he can suck down a six-pack and watch some late-night programming. But Brian doesn’t do to the land of nod that easily, and he’s soon whining for “Uncle Miiiiiikkkkeee” to sit at his bedside and regale him to sleep with some fables. Mike, to his credit, tries to weasel his way out of storytime by proclaiming he has to “press the cat” and “vacuum the ceiling”, but Brian isn’t letting him off the hook that easily. Knowing his night can’t continue until this little booger is deep in a pillow pocket, Mike makes up a couple of his own – sort of – leading us into a great opening credit sequence and getting this triumvirate of tales underway.

In the first fable, Peter (Scott Valentine), is a young man held in slavery who has just been sold off to two wicked witch sisters. They have plans to make a potion that will bring their long-dead sister back from the grave but first they need to acquire some necessary ingredients – the brain of a black cat, heart of an eel… the severed hand of a holy man. All the standard witches brew ingredients. The two sisters kvetch and quarrel as much as they collaborate and connive but eventually their plan comes together and a new heart is installed in the vacant cavity of their departed sister’s chest. All they need now is to sacrifice a young girl. Their grand scheme goes awry, however, when Paul decides to make a break for it, taking the would-be sacrifice in the process.

The story here – as in the other segments – feels rushed and sloppily executed. So much of the plot here is dedicated to resurrecting the dead witch and once that moment comes it seems like the story can’t wait to be done with itself. I can cut some slack, though, because in a deliciously meta moment Brian complains to Uncle Mike of the “mushy and icky ending” – due to some kissing and happiness – so Uncle Mike quickly retells it to be more horrific. The real highlight here: the FX work, which caught me off guard since one of the witches sports some terrible dental work. But then the Dead Witch Resurrection happened and there is some visceral reverse photography going on there, with her body slowly returning to live like Uncle Frank in Hellraiser (1987).

Next up, a howling retelling of the old “Little Red Riding Hood” tale, this version featuring a sexy runner in red and her would-be suitor with a serious need for some specific medication. Willie (Matt Mitler) spends a lot of time at his local pharmacy, in constant need of his pills. On a trip there he makes chit chat with Rachel (Nicole Picard), an attractive brunette in line. Due to a mishap by the pharmacist, Willie winds up with medication intended for the Rachel’s grandmother (Fran Lopate) while old granny winds up with his. This would normally be nothing more than an accidental mix-up but Willie really needs those pills. After threatening the pharmacist he gets the address for Rachel’s grammy and hoofs it over there, just in time to be greeted by a full moon… unleashing his inner beast.

The first story is closer to actual horror while the third is played totally humorous, and this falls somewhere in the middle – oddly fitting, given the next story is based upon “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. The acting here – and, really, overall – can leave plenty to be desired. At the very least some of it, like Grandma, is so awful it transcends bad and becomes unintentional hilarity. It doesn’t help that she looks like Adam Sandler on “SNL”, back when he used to don a wig and pretend to be an old Jewish grandmother. Once again, the real highlight here is the FX work. The wolfman makeup is well done, with bladders and facial appliances giving the longer-than-expected transformation sequence a sense of spectacle.

Finally, the film deflates on a low note, ending on a rework of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, or in this case Baers. The Baer crime family, to be exact, consisting of Judith “Mama” Baer (Melissa Leo), “Papa” Baer (Kevin Hannon), and “Baby” Baer (Timothy Rule). After Mama helps bust her boys out of the clink, they go head to an old cabin in the woods to lay low. Unbeknownst to them, Goldi Lox (Cathryn de Prume) has taken over the cabin and filled it with dead bodies. Yep, Goldi is a certified nutjob who likes to mutilate all the cute boys. When the Baers show up instead of a bloody showdown they wind up welcoming the cute blonde into their family with open arms. Did I forget to mention Goldi is also telekinetic? Nothing about this segment works at all, and it has virtually no horror elements aside from Goldi’s affinity for killing young men which is only seen once.

At least the film itself ends on a slightly higher note, with a nice zinger coming little Brian’s way once Uncle Mike has tired of speaking. The stories might not hold up to any sort of scrutiny due to some clearly poor writing but the atmosphere has a fun, low-budget, “crank it out with your buddies on free weekends” vibe – and that feeling is comforting and infectious.

The 1.85:1 1080p picture is impressively strong, especially when the micro-budget and passage of time are both taken into account. The image is clear and free from major dirt and debris. Definition and fine image details are often sharp and well defined. Colors are natural and vibrant. Film grain does occasionally spike up during darker scenes but overall it adds a nice filmic touch. Black levels appear suitably dark and rarely hazy.

The English DTS-HD MA 2.0 mono track is a little workhorse that gets the job done. The opening theme song is all kinds of ‘80s awesomeness, especially paired with the inventive credits. The score itself sounds excellent as composer Larry Juris rifles through different sounds to score each segment distinctly. Dialogue comes through loud and clear, no hissing or dropouts. Subtitles are available in English.

Co-writer and director Jeffrey Delman provides the audio commentary. Tracks like this are usually a highly informative lesson if you want to know the ins and outs of low-budget moviemaking.

“I Like the Grotesque: A Conversation with Co-Writer and Director Jef Delman”- This is a fun and breezy chat with Delman, who is a true dyed-in-the-wool horror fan.

“A Band of Gypsies: The Making of Deadtime Stories” – Members of the film’s cast and crew sit down to cover a few of the usual topics related to making a movie.

“The Black Forest” is an alternate version of the first segment, almost more like a short film.

A couple of deleted scenes, two theatrical trailers, and a photo gallery are also included.

Special Features:

  • NEW High-Definition Transfer From the Original Negative
  • NEW Audio Commentary with co-writer/director Jef Delman
  • NEW I Like the Grotesque – an interview with co-writer/director Jef Delman

Antibirth (Blu-ray/DVD)

AntibirthStarring Natasha Lyonne, Chloe Sevigny, Meg Tilly

Directed by Danny Perez

Distributed by Scream Factory

Ask anyone who writes film reviews and nearly all will agree that it is much easier to cover a good film or a bad film than it is to cover a mediocre film. Great films can inspire as much passionate discussion as those that are laughably terrible, but a film that simply exists for a predetermined length of time and offers up nothing but one instantly forgettable scene after the next is a drag. Antibirth (2016) is one of those films. When the greatest compliment a film can be paid is related to its home video cover art, that should be a red flag something is seriously amiss. Really, though, We Buy Your Kids, who I believe reside in Australia, did a fine job on the psychedelic artwork. The film itself, however, is a mess.

Lou (Natasha Lyonne) is a perpetually stoned party girl who wakes up one morning after a seemingly-typically night of getting wasted to find she may be pregnant. Her friend, Sadie (Chloe Sevigny), is sure she’s got a loaf baking in there, but Lou confesses she hasn’t had sex in over a year. Given how crude and gnarly she is, that doesn’t come as a big surprise. A weird itinerant lady, Lorna (Meg Tilly), comes across Lou and seems to get some strange vibes off of her. As all of this is occurring to Lou, a drug dealer on the other side of town has some lady chained up in his place, using her as a guinea pig for some new designer drugs. Lou has likely been given these drugs and is possibly carrying some weird druggie fetus creature in her womb. Who cares?

That’s the gist of this whole thing. I think. Director Danny Perez seems less concerned with making a legit feature film with any semblance of an actual story, opting instead for a purple haze of sequences that have as much weight to them as a cloud of smoke. I don’t know who the intended audience is here but there isn’t really a movie here and, so, it’s a little difficult to discuss a series of shitty scenes strung together masquerading as a real film. Even worse, Perez has some actual talent on board with names like Lyonne, Sevigny, and Tilly. Lyonne has gotten by playing the hard-talking, rough-living druggie the past few years, and this role is less of a stretch and more of a slight bend. Sevigny and Tilly can both be great when they have the right material with which to work. Here, they’re both given table scraps and expected to… I’m not sure. Elevate the lack of material simply by being present? I can only assume their appearances here amount to a personal favor to someone in the upper echelon of the production team because I can’t imagine a scenario where any of them read this script and thought, “This sounds like a great opportunity to show my stuff!”

The 1.85:1 1080p image is pretty standard for digital HD. Clarity is often excellent, film grain doesn’t exist, colors – though heavily graded often – are nicely saturated. The quality of the picture itself is great.

There are English DTS-HD MA tracks available in 2.0 stereo or 5.1 surround sound. I chose the multi-channel track and found nothing spectacular to suggest it is any better than the stereo offering. It gets the job done, although in this case the job should have been mercifully killing me before the opening credits ended.

“Promotional Marketing Shorts”, a handful of weird videos, storyboards, and a trailer make up the extras.

There’s much trepidation going on as to whether or not Andy Muschietti’s take on Stephen King’s IT can live up to fans’ expectations. Thankfully, King himself got to see the film and recently offered his thoughts via Seth Grahame-Smith on Instagram!

Steve asked me to pass along that he saw a screening of IT today and wanted to let everybody know that they should stop worrying about it as the producers have done a wonderful job with the production.

Huzzah!

In the first half of IT, Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Hamilton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Sophia Lillis star with Bill Skarsgard, who portrays Pennywise. In addition, creature performer Javier Botet has signed on as The Leper, and Owen Teague plays Patrick Hocksetter, part of a group of bullies who torment The Losers’ Club.

Andy Muschietti directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman and Chase Palmer. Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg, and Barbara Muschietti produce.

Jennifer Tilly Gets Fans Excited for Cult of Chucky

As we all eagerly await The Cult of Chucky, one of its stars, Jennifer Tilly, recently appeared on “New York Live” to talk a little bit about the movie!

“I think it’s going to really surprise and excite the Chucky fans,” said Tilly. “I am there, in the living, breathing flesh.” Check out the interview below.

About Cult of Chucky:
Cult of Chucky, an all-new spellbinding chapter of the Child’s Play thriller franchise, began principal photography in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on January 9, 2017. The seventh film in the blockbuster series will be released in a bone-chilling Unrated Version on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD in fall 2017 — just in time for Halloween. Packed with the franchise’s signature blend of horror and demented humor, Cult of Chucky is the latest production from Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Cult of Chucky

Cult of Chucky

Cult of Chucky

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 30 years since Chucky first terrified moviegoers in Child’s Play,” said Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “Since then the films have generated millions in worldwide box office revenue. Now Chucky’s back with more scores to settle in his trademark twisted style, and you can bet he won’t stop until he gets his revenge.”

Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky) returns as Nica, the wheelchair-bound heroine framed by Chucky for the bloody murders of her entire family. She’s joined by franchise veterans Alex Vincent (Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2) and Jennifer Tilly (Monsters, Inc., Bride of Chucky), with Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) once again providing the eerie, unnerving voice of the demon doll possessed by the spirit of a maniacal serial killer.

Don Mancini, writer of the Child’s Play franchise, is the executive producer of the new film, which he also directs from his original script. Longtime franchise producer David Kirschner (The Pagemaster, Frailty) is joined this time by Ogden Gavanski (Warm Bodies, Immortals). The production team includes special-effects guru and associate producer Tony Gardner (Zombieland, Curse of Chucky), director of photography Michael Marshall (“Killjoys”), production designer Craig Sandells (Mother’s Day), and costume designer Patricia J. Henderson (ATM).

Synopsis:
Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all.

Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her, he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.

Having seen Kong: Skull Island (review) last night, I’m still flying kind of high from the experience. It’s easily my favorite Kong movie since the original film, and for my money it is every bit as good as the 1933 Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack classic.

Part of what makes the movie so good is the mysterious creatures that inhabit the island alongside Big Furry. In the spirit of that mystery, I implore you NOT to look at the following series of viral cards showcasing some of Skull Island’s deadliest beasts.
