All in all, we can think of worse people to be trapped Underwater with, but THR is reporting that things will be far from fun in the upcoming disaster thriller. According to the site T.J. Miller is in final negotiations to join the murky depths.

Kristen Stewart is attached to the film, which follows a crew of underwater researchers who must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory.

William Eubank (The Signal) will direct from a script by Brian Duffield (Insurgent, Jane Got a Gun).

Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Tonia Davis are producing, while Kevin Holloran is executive producing. A March production start in New Orleans is being eyed.

Online Predator Captures a Cast for Nomis

The Internet can be just as frightening a place as any haunted house or abandoned asylum. You never know who or what can be lurking on the other side of the screen, and the new film Nomis is set to explore that.

According to THR, the cast for David Raymond’s psychological thriller has been rounded out with Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion (pictured), Minka Kelly, Brendan Fletcher, and Mpho Koaho.

They join Henry Cavill, Ben Kingsley, and Alexandra Daddario, who are starring in the film about an American police force that traps an online predator, only to realize the depth of his crimes goes far beyond anything anticipated.

Raymond wrote the script and will direct. He also is producing with Fortitude’s Robert Ogden Barnum, Arise Pictures’ Chris Pettit, Buffalo Gals’ Jeff Beesley, and Rick Dugdale. Fortitude International is handling international sales and first introduced the project to foreign buyers in Berlin this past February.

Nadine De Barros of Fortitude International is serving as executive producer alongside PalmStar Media’s Kevin Frakes and Buddy Patrick, Sherborne Media Capital’s Alastair Burlingham and Tony Parker, Buffalo Gals’ Phyllis Laing, and Arcola Entertainment’s Gaurav Talwar, James Lancaster, James Milligan, Larry Harding, Mitesh Parikh, Nasrat Muzayyin, Niraj Parikh, Peter Aitken, Pulak Parikh, Rob Wood, Steven Ashley, Sundip K. Bhundia, Francesca Dutton, Amanatey Sogbodjor, Zorin Finkelsen, and Mark Catton.

Ever Wanted Officially Licensed Universal Monsters Jewelry? Now’s Your Chance!

Are you a major fan of Universal’s original monster movies? Y’know, movies like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and such? If so, let me ask you if you also happen to be a fan of jewelry or ways to show off your love of these fantastic films?

If you answered “Yes” to these questions, then Los Angeles jewelry designer Han Cholo has something that you’ll absolutely adore!

Han Cholo holds the licenses for official jewelry for various pop culture titles, such as “He-Man” or Star Wars. They also have a line based on Sideshow’s Court of the Dead. Now the designer has locked down the licenses for a Universal Movie Monster line and released a handful of products based on Bride of Frankenstein that you can see by clicking the above link. There are four different rings, some cufflinks, and a pin. Looking at their other collections, I can see pendants, necklaces, and other jewelry options coming for later films.

Just a warning: These are NOT cheap pieces. It looks like Han Cholo is putting a lot of love and care into each piece, using precious metals that necessitate a 2- to 4-week production and delivery time frame. That means if you want to use their “Till Death Do Us Part” rings for your wedding, get ’em with plenty of time to spare!

Synapse Releases Suspiria Comparison Photos Against Videa’s Blu-ray Edition

Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian film Suspiria is one of the most highly regarded genre titles in the history of horror. Definitely hailed as one of the most beautiful, it also features one of the best opening sequences as well as one of the catchiest and most memorable original soundtracks. Therefore, it’s no wonder that any release is going to catch a lot of attention.

Three years ago, Synapse films announced that they would be releasing a Blu-ray edition of Suspiria and it seems that the delay in getting it to us is because they’re going over every single frame with a fine-toothed comb. To prove how much work they’re putting into it, they just posted several comparison photos of frames within the Italian release by Video alongside their own upcoming restoration, which they state will be coming out this year.

Synapse states that they are posting the photos publicly “…without further comment” but it’s easy to see what a difference there is between the two editions. Synapse’s edition just looks far more alive and vivacious. There is a clarity and beauty to their frames that makes Videa’s look drab and flat. The colors of the films seem to explode out from Synapse’s screenshots, which proves, at least to me, that the long wait will certainly be worth it!

See the comparisons for yourself below.

The plot is under wraps, but the film is part of the original franchise that began with 1987’s Predator.

Akira Kurosawa’s Masque of the Red Death Script to be Filmed

$

Often regarded as the Godfather of Japanese cinema, Akira Kurosawa sadly died before he could film his planned adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. You probably know that story from Roger Corman’s classic 1964 adaptation starring Vincent Price.

The Oscar nominated Kurosawa was known for films such as Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood and Ran, and was a frequent collaborator with Godzilla creator Ishirō Honda.

The good news is that Chinese studio Huayi Brothers Media have purchased Kurosawa’s script, and are planning to make it into a film by 2020, as reported by China.org. Chen Kuo-fu’s CKF Pictures will be collaborating on the project. A director has not yet come onboard.

This isn’t the first time that one of Kurosawa’s scripts was adapted after his death. The films After the Rain, The Sea is Watching, and this year’s PS4 classic Nioh were all based on screenplays that he never got the chance to film. If you head over the The Film Stage, you can read a translation of his Masque of the Red Death script in its entirety.

Meet Haruo Nakajima, the Man Who Was Godzilla

In 1954, Toho Films released the first film in what would become a thrilling and important franchise in the form of Godzilla. A fantastic movie about the dangers of atomic weapons masked in a giant creature feature, the titular character, in time, became a recognizable symbol across the world. For many, his mighty roar is all that people need to hear to know of his arrival.

Related Story: A Look at the Beautiful, Cheesy, and Absurd Godzilla Posters Over the Years

But what many people may not know is Haruo Nakajima, the man who first wore the giant lizard suit and continued to do so for a total of 12 films in the franchise. For nearly 20 years, Nakajima was the man who rained destruction upon Tokyo or, alternatively, tried to save it from various kaiju creatures. From the 1954 original film to 1972’s Godzilla vs. Gigan, it was Nakajima who gave life to a creature that to this day inspires awe and fear.

The folk over at Great Big Story have released a short video that goes into Nakajima’s approach to playing Godzilla as well as how he was chosen for the role. It’s a delightful piece as it proves Nakajima’s continued pride and joy in this monstrous role. I highly recommend giving it a watch when you get a chance. It’s only a few minutes and it gives insight into a character that has helped shape cinema.

Hounds of Love Trailer Doesn’t Skimp on the Tension

The Australian thriller Hounds of Love, which has its North American premiere at SXSW, has released a new trailer that feels tightly contained yet ready to explode at any moment. The overall feeling of paranoia, suspicion, dread, and terror permeates every frame of this teaser and I anticipate it being a film that will haunt many viewers.

I was drawn to the idea of Hounds of Love after reading a true crime book about female serial killers,” said filmmaker Ben Young. “It triggered a strong memory of fear from my childhood that was instilled by my parents as a result of crimes committed by a serial killer couple.

Hounds of Love was written and directed by Ben Young and stars Emma Booth, Stephen Curry, and Ashleigh Cummings. It opens in theaters on May 12, 2017.

Synopsis:
In suburban Perth during the mid 1980s, people are unaware that women are disappearing at the hands of serial killer couple John and Evelyn White. After an innocent lapse in judgment, Vicki Maloney is randomly abducted by the disturbed couple. With her murder imminent, Vicki realizes she must find a way to drive a wedge between Evelyn and John if she is to survive.

Be a Part of Bats Day at Disney!

In California and need a creepy reason to head out to Disney other than visiting The Haunted Mansion? Well, you shouldn’t because The Haunted Mansion is reason enough, but just in case…

From the Press Release:
Once again, another very large subculture group has opted to schedule their biannual event on the same day as our Spooky Trip to Disneyland Resort (Sunday, May 7, 2017). Bats Day in the Fun Park is not affiliated with any division of the Walt Disney Company, but we are in constant contact with Disneyland throughout the year. And though there appears to be plenty of space at Disneyland for everyone to do whatever they like, we at Bats Day book our meeting times and locations with Disneyland so they will be available during our annual Spooky Trip to the Park. This helps both Disneyland and Bats Day to organize the best possible experience for everyone.

The other event that has been scheduled opposite Bats Day (“Pin-up Parade in the Park”) does not make such arrangements. When extremely large groups hold events at Disneyland, this can be a challenge for the park and for everyone involved. We reached out to find out why they decided to pick this weekend, and their response was “We do not check for other meet-ups going on.”

So if you’re planning to attend our Bats Day trip to Disneyland, you need to know: We have been told that if you look like you are a part of the other group gathering that day, rather than Bats Day, you will not receive the Bats Day in the Fun Park experience that we have always had.

To avoid any confusion and have the best possible Bats Day experience, we recommend that you do not mix styles of dress between Bats Day and “Pin-up Parade in the Park.” It can be easy for others to misunderstand your intentions, so we hope that you’ll stay true to our Dark Subculture. Bats Day in the Fun Park is not a dress-up, “cosplay” or “Disney-bounding” event. It’s a gathering for the many facets of the Dark Subculture community.

Raw (2017)

Starring Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, Rabah Nait Oufella

Directed by Julia Ducournau

Everyone’s got a little white lie to tell, and sometimes those little fibs are used in a hook method in order to reel the public in due to the “shocking nature” of a particular film. This latest attempt follows on the heels of Julia Ducournau’s cannibalistic-flick, Raw.

According to stories, there were reports of puking and passing out during the screening of this particular presentation, and if that truly is the case, then by all means: well done to everyone involved in the creation and construction of this French exhibit about the un-satiated need for human flesh and blood…now if the aforementioned yacking and flopping didn’t happen, then shame on you all. In any event, if there did happen to be some tender-stomached viewers, then they would have seen some instances that perhaps MAYBE could have rolled a gut or two, but I seriously doubt that there’s anything faint-worthy or regurgitation-assisted to mention, but then again I’m jaded. The story centers around veterinary-school freshman Justine (Marillier), and her staunch vegan ways, firmly set into place by her parents during her upbringing. Once enrolled in school, she tails her older sister (Rumpf), who is also in the vet program, and heeds the warning that her impending hazing will just be something that she’ll have to contend with if she wants to survive at the school. One of the stunts that she initially must undergo is the chomping down of a rabbit kidney, to which she is mortified, but at the risk of relentless taunting and possible exclusion, she downs the innard and unwillingly starts an internal beast-clock inside her system that will not let her rest until she consumes some real flesh.

Justine starts off small with simple rare hamburgers, but we all know that just won’t suffice, so it’s onto larger cuts of meat, and I assume this is where the “vomiting” comes in? Could it be that an animal has awoken in Justine that cannot be subdued, or is there a much bigger secret that could be the cause of all this beef-binging? Forget about the slow-moving tempo, or overindulgence of cringe-inducing imagery, Raw is one of those films that’s got a real story to tell, and it works its way out of its shell over time. The strength of family, the pressures of a new school…the urge to not chew someone’s leg off – hey, pressures are all around us. It’s an interesting film to witness, but not exactly one I’d be shouting off of the rooftops about – feel free to give it a look as a one-timer, but don’t sweat about buying a puke-guard anytime soon.

Tom Hiddleston Talks Kong: Skull Island

$

0

Set in the 1970s, Kong: Skull Island follows a team of explorers and soldiers who travel to an uncharted island in the Pacific, unaware that they are crossing into the domain of monsters, including the mythic Kong. Tom Hiddleston plays a mercenary soldier.

Dread Central: What was it about this character in particular that grabbed you?

Tom Hiddleston: On the set of Crimson Peak, in March of 2014, Thomas Tull came to visit and he said, I want to talk to you about something. He told me, and I was very excited about the Godzilla project they had made and was looking forward to seeing it, and he said we’re also making Kong, so when you’re finished with this film come and see me. I went to visit him and he pitched Kong: Skull Island to me and said at the center of it there is an adventurer, a former soldier, somebody who goes on a journey and it’s full of action and adventure.

I’ve loved King Kong since I was a child and to be in a generation of the Kong myth was so exciting to me. Then Thomas and Jordan and everybody at Legendary included me in developing the character, which was really thrilling. I wanted him to be someone who starts off in a world-weary place, and his experiences on the island give him a new humility in the face of the wonder and power of the natural world essentially, which I think Kong represents.

DC: What do you remember about seeing Kong as a young boy?

TH: I think it’s just, I think children are very excited by nature and by animals, and the idea of Kong is just very exciting, he’s a big monkey and as a child I think it’s a cool idea.

DC: Are you a fan of monster movies?

TH: I loved adventure movies. I loved where people went on an adventure to an unknown land, an undiscovered country, a new territory. I think there is something right in the middle of storytelling that people love about that. We’re all intrigued in our civilized world that we live in, I think we’re all quite curious to how we’d get on an undiscovered island, untouched by man, and I think stories like that play into that curiosity in the audience.

DC: Tell us about shooting in Vietnam.

TH: Vietnam is absolutely breathtaking. I’ve never been to that part of the world before and it is an area of such natural beauty and I think the landscape of Vietnam became the central visual template for what Skull Island should look like. The Vietnamese people were so kind, hospitable and welcoming, we ate all the food, there was a lot of duck, but we were shooting in and around Hanoi and Nin Bin and Fong Nar, the lakes of Nin Bin and the valleys of Fong Nar, which I think is a completely unique landscape.

DC: What do you think about the political aspects of Kong?

TH: Well, I think the movie is set in 1973, and 1973 as an era, which is now quite a long time ago, presents itself as the last time… it was an uneasy time in Washington, we’re all familiar what that feels like, and actually I think it was a really fascinating time in history because the development of modern technology, the satellites, the photographs we were taking from space were mapping the Earth in a new way, making us feel like the globe we inhabit is much smaller than previously conceived in the human mind. I think the foreign policies of Western democracies were changing, there was a huge social justice movement, the Sixties had completely changed how people conceived their lives and their habits and identities, and I think that’s just a very exciting prism or a very exciting space to put this story into.

DC: Did you notice any similarities to Apocalypse Now?

TH: That’s a movie I admire and Jordan loves it too and I think to take a group of soldiers who have seen unimaginable things in conflict, who already have a depth of spirit because of their experiences and an innate courage, to take those characters and put them in this environment is innately interesting. I think this film does raise questions about the nature of war but also about the bravery and courage of soldiers. There’s that scene that I play with Brie Larson, where she’s asking me about my own backstory, Weaver is asking Conrad about his own personal history and Conrad’s response is he became a tracker for the SAS because his own father was lost in the Second World War and he’s dedicated his life to recovering lost soldiers and his response to her question is, no man comes back from war, not really. And so you have these soldiers who have this experience that I think is unimaginable to most of us, and they already have a weight and a depth and still they’re faced with these giant creatures and feel humbled in their presence.

DC: Did any real creatures on location scare you?

TH: There were some in Australia, we saw a brown snake in Australia and I saw the webs of funnel web spiders. I mean, Queensland is the highest concentration of dangerous animals in the world but we loved it.

DC: If we can switch gears a moment… is Loki is a monster?

TH: I just wrapped Thor: Ragnarok in November. Um, Loki is the God of Mischief; whether he’s a monster is not for me to say.

DC: How do you see your career now? Where does Loki fit in as not a leading man but a character?

TH: That’s not for me to say. I’ve always wanted to play different types of characters; I never wanted to be limited by any one kind of archetype.

DC: What was it like working with director Taika Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok?

TH: It was fantastic! [He’s a] wonderful, wonderful director. Very spirited and lighthearted. Yeah, I think he’s a director who… you can’t help but leave a fingerprint of who you are on the film you make and Taika is a very warm-hearted, generous spirit who loves to make people laugh, so I think you’ll certainly see humor in Ragnorok.

DC: How about working with Samuel Jackson?

TH: Sam is just a very fine actor and he’s a consummate professional. He and I have worked together on Avengers before and what’s really nice about moments like that is that we already have a rapport between actors, a mutual respect and it’s fun when you go toe-to-toe with an actor like Sam, that’s like playing tennis with Novak Djokovic. But actually, we enjoy that, he’s a creature of the theater as much as I am and to have some of those scenes where we had some dialogue to sink our teeth into and so much of the engagement on a film like this is imagining the creatures that aren’t there, and when you’re up against a real actor like Sam, when you have some really good dialogue back and forth between you, that’s really exciting.

DC: Was it hard keeping in shape, and did you get a break in between films?

TH: No, and yes is the answer to your first question. I see it as a condition of my job to be in excellent physical health, especially for a film like this. It was a huge leap, it was a role that required stamina and a lot of running and climbing and fighting as you’ve seen, and I genuinely feel it’s my duty, if I’m playing a soldier, to making some strides to replicating the fitness that soldiers have to match. This guy is highly decorated for the special air service so I trained with two former British Marines and one former U.S. Navy Seal and just the physical discipline of training with them, I think helped me in playing this role.

DC: There’s a tease in the end credits… what more is there coming up?

TH: I can’t reveal that information. I don’t know, honestly; that’s in the lap of the movie gods. Legendary are very carefully developing a universe of films, I personally find that very exciting, I think there is value in this type of entertainment.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts.

Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero.

Vogt-Roberts directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly. To fully immerse audiences in the mysterious Skull Island, the director, cast, and filmmaking team filmed across three continents over six months, capturing its primordial landscapes on Oahu, Hawaii; on Australia’s Gold Coast; and finally in Vietnam, where filming took place across multiple locations, some of which have never before been seen on film.

Kong: Skull Island will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theaters, and IMAX beginning March 10, 2017, from Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Synopsis:
A diverse team of scientists, soldiers, and adventurers unite to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific, as dangerous as it is beautiful. Cut off from everything they know, the team ventures into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature. As their mission of discovery becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape a primal Eden in which humanity does not belong.
