Hammer's The Quiet Ones Fully Cast and Filming Now!More casting news and word of commencement have come for Hammer's latest project, The Quiet Ones, and we've got the details right here. Three cheers for one of horror's biggest and oldest companies still kicking ass!

From the Press Release
Simon Oakes, Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media and President & CEO of Hammer, has announced that Hammer, an Exclusive Media Company, begins principal photography on The Quiet Ones, the supernatural thriller/horror which will shoot on location in Oxfordshire.

Starring Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Ward, "Mad Men") and Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), The Quiet Ones will be directed by John Pogue (Quarantine 2: Terminal). Joining the cast are Erin Richards ("Breaking In", "Being Human"), Olivia Cooke ("The Secret of Crickley Hall", "The Fuse") and West End theater actor Rory Fleck-Byrne. With the story and original screenplay by Tom DeVille, revisions by Craig Rosenberg, Oren Moverman and most recently John Pogue, the film is produced by James Gay-Rees (Senna, Exit Through The Gift Shop) and Ben Holden in association with TPSC Films.

Inspired by true events, The Quiet Ones tells the story of an unorthodox but charismatic Professor (Harris) who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist from negative human energy.

The film’s creative team includes the cult favorite genre editor Glenn Galrand (Grindhouse, Rob Zombie’s Halloween series), award-winning cinematographer Matyas Erdely (Miss Bala); costume designer Camille Benda (Junkhearts, The Holding) and production designer Matthew Gant (Hush).

Exclusive Media’s President of Worldwide Production & Acquisitions, Tobin Armbrust, is overseeing production alongside Head of Physical Production, Jillian Longnecker. TPSC Film's President Steven Chester Prince is a producer on the project for the newly formed independent film division of The Traveling Picture Show Company. Sales are being handled by Alex Walton, Exclusive Media’s President of International Sales and Distribution.

The Quiet Ones marks Hammer’s next production after the worldwide box office hit The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which has taken over $130 million at the box office worldwide to date.

Other Hammer productions in the works include The Woman In Black: Angels Of Death, to be produced with Talisman, Cross Creek Pictures and Alliance Films; Boneshaker to be produced with Cross Creek Pictures; Gaslight written by newcomer Ian Fried; and the newly announced The Winchester Mystery House to be produced with Imagination Design Works (IDW) and Nine/8 Entertainment.

Alain DesRochers Tackles Vampires with The RisingVampires in jungles. Those three words together have us smiling from ear-to-ear. THR reports that Alain DesRochers has come aboard to direct The Rising, a jungle action vampire movie being made by Millennium/Nu Image.

The company picked up the project as a spec from Paul Sloan last year.

The script is described as having been inspired by pulp heroes Doc Savage and Tarzan and “centers on a team of mercenaries whose search for a missing person in the jungles of Cambodia becomes a descent into the heart of darkness as they confront the dark force of a vampire.

Patrick Bergin and Yancy Butler Chumming the Waters for The Asylum's Shark Week

$

You really have got to hand it to The Asylum. Not content to just do mockbusters of big screen movies, now they’re mockbustering an entire week of programming on a cable television network with Shark Week.

Shark Week reunites 2-Headed Shark Attack director Christopher Olen Ray and writer H. Perry Horton for a carcharodon-a-thon Horton describes on his own Asylum fansite as “The Hunger Games meets Deep Blue Sea.”

Synopsis:
A group of complete strangers find themselves isolated by a wealthy madman on his island compound. They are forced into a horrifying gauntlet where they must survive a barrage of ever deadlier species of shark.

Patrick Bergin (Sleeping with the Enemy, Patriot Games) stars as the wealthy madman. Yancy Butler (“Witchblade”, Lake Placid 3) is his femme fatale sidekick. Erin Coker of The Asylum’s Air Collision and Josh Allen Nazis at the Center of the Earth are amongst the unlucky contestants forced to play this most dangerous of games.

Shark Week is set for DVD/VOD release on August 7th. Not coincidentally, July 31st–August 5th is when The Discovery Channel will be broadcasting its annual “Shark Week” slate of programming. From the sounds of things this production is only just getting started, which means the turnaround from filming to making an August 7th release is going to be insanely fast.

In addition, The Asylum has just announced details regarding its next foray into found footage territory: 100 Ghost Street: The Return of Richard Speck.

Synopsis:
In 2010 paranormal investigators tried to film Richard Speck’s ghost at the site of his heinous killing spree. The victims’ families have finally released the footage that documents their last days.

No cast and crew are listed because it’s all completely and totally 100% real, you know? After suffering through Alien Origin, unless they can absolutely, positively guarantee that there will be something as spectacular as 8213: Gacy House’s mid-air depanting ghost rape, I just don’t think I can handle another Asylum found footage borefest.

E3 2012 Exclusive Preview: Aliens: Colonial Marines

$
0
0

Aliens: Colonial Marines has been a long time coming. Fans of the series have been waiting patiently as the game has been pushed back multiple times over the years. But if what they were showing off at E3 this year is any indication of the final product, that wait will not have been in vain.

While at the 2012 E3 Expo in Los Angeles, I had a chance to get some hands-on time with the multiplayer in Aliens: Colonial Marines as well as ask a few questions of game producer Brian Burleson, which you can check out below.

As you would expect, there are two sides of the coin in the multiplayer: the Marines and the Aliens. If you've played a first person shooter this generation, you know what to expect from the Marines. Pull the left trigger to point your gun at things and the right trigger to make them dead, fairly standard stuff. On the other hand, the Aliens are played from a third person perspective, giving you a better perspective on your surroundings and making positioning yourself for the kill much easier than it's been in past games.

One of the big problems I've always had with Aliens in video games is that they're usually treated like fodder. In the films the Xenomorphs are tough as nails and instill terror in anyone that has to go toe-to-toe with one. But, more often than not, in the games you can slaughter a half dozen or more then reload and move on to the next room like it's no big deal. While I can't speak on the single player just yet when it comes to that, I can say that isn't the case in multiplayer.

The Aliens are tough to bring down. Given how fast and agile they can be, even one-on-one trying to drop one with a pulse rifle is a tough proposal. And if you encounter a group of them in close quarters, you're as good as dead. Of course, that requires them to get in close to you. As a Colonial Marine you have access to all the classic weaponry from the film. During my session I was only able to get my hands on the Pulse Rifle, but I was assured all the other favorites would be featured as well.

The mode they had on the floor at E3 was a fairly standard team death match, one team of Marines vs. one team of Aliens to see who could get the most kills in five minutes.

Those five minutes seemed to blaze by as I did my best to shoot anything that wasn't human. The best thing I can say about my session is that it feels like Aliens. This isn't just a Call of Duty or Halo clone ran through an Alien filter. Even on a noisy show floor there was an incredible sense of tension built up during the game. The atmosphere is absolutely spot on.

As a Marine, you need to be aware of your surroundings. The Aliens can come from any direction without warning. And if they get near you, you're done. End of story.

Of course, the Marines aren't exactly pushovers themselves. As I mentioned earlier, I had in my hands the M41-A Pulse Rifle with under slung grenade launcher. Filling an Alien that's in full sprint towards you full of holes then launching a grenade into a group of his buddies and watching them go flying is incredibly exhilarating. But, of course, my hubris was immediately erased when shortly after that a Xeno I wasn't aware of dropped from the ceiling and took a bite out of my face. Such is the life (and death) of a Colonial Marine.

My absolute favorite part of my time with the game was being able to use the iconic motion tracker. In lieu of a standard map or radar on screen, you're able to pull out the motion tracker at any time and scan the area for hostiles. It felt just like a moment from the film when I took out the tracker and there was nothing on the screen, then a second later there was a blip and a red dot on the screen, then two, then three. As they closed in on me, I had to scramble to put away the tracker and get my rifle ready to fire. After laying down some fire and launching a couple of grenades, I stood victorious. Having that little extra tactical advantage gave me the edge I needed to eke out a victory in that small skirmish. But not being able to use the tracker and have a weapon ready at the same time means you have to make a decision between being able to defend yourself or knowing what horrors are coming at you. The second it takes to switch between the two could be the difference between life and death.

I really enjoyed the brief time I spent with the multiplayer in Aliens: Colonial Marines. In a market that's jam packed with games that feature dudes shooting other dudes, it really feels like it's trying to carve out something that's a little more unique. It's been a long wait, but it seems like Aliens fans may finally have the game we've always wanted. And I made it through this whole thing without saying "Game over, man!"

Oh wait…damn it.

Aliens: Colonial Marines launches on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC on February 12th, 2013 with a Wii U version planned for a later release. For more information check out the official Aliens: Colonial Marines website.

It's a good day to be a fan of Clive Barker's creature feature Nightbreed. For a while now a two-hour and forty-five-minute version of the film, known as Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (review), has been making the screening rounds at conventions, etc.

Now it looks as if this coveted piece of film may just be headed home.

Up until now all the proceeds that the film made were going to charity, but today Barker revealed that Morgan Creek has given him permission "to show the cut around the world and to raise money to prepare the cut for a release on Blu-ray." Two words, kids - holy and shit!

From Clive via his Twitter account: "This could not, would not, have happened without your voices. We have all been heard. The Morgan Creek team have my thanks and my respect. Very seldom does anyone in the movie business pay attention as they have, understanding perhaps that the message of the movie as I shot it is one that dramatizes a different ending to the age-old story of how a war between Humankind and something Other draws to a close."

Stay tuned for more. The Impromptu Rapid Irish Jig of Joy and Mirth™ video is on standby!

Exclusive: Co-Producer Will Clevinger Talks Model HomeWith director Patrick Cunningham's feature directorial debut, Model Home, set to go before cameras next week in Los Angeles, we chatted with co-producer Will Clevinger regarding the indie thriller. Read on!

Co-written by Cunningham and producer William Frank, Model Home is being shepherded by High Windows Films and stars Monique Gabriela Curnen (Contagion) and Kathy Baker (Take Shelter, "Medium"). The narrative explores the practice of "live-in staging," in which recently evicted families are recruited to live in unsold properties. Curnen will play a single mother who begins to entertain dangerous fantasies while "staging" a model home in an otherwise empty development, while Baker portrays a realtor who grows increasingly suspicious and alarmed.

Clevinger and Ben Rabbers (The Devil’s Carnival) co-produce, as does Jarod Einsohn, with executive producer credits going to John Frank and Douglas Britton.

“I met co-writer and producer Will Frank in the basketball league that we both play in, and he sent me the script,” Clevinger told us of his involvement with Model Home, which will be lensed by Jayson Crothers (Bigfoot) with FX provided by Elle Favorule and George Frangadakis.

“It was one of the smartest and most creative concepts I had ever read,” continued Clevinger, whose other producing credits include the cult fave Automaton Transfusion and the upcoming (and much buzzed about) Under The Bed. “My producing partner, Ben Rabbers, and I felt like this would be a great transition from the horror films that we have been used to making into more psychological-based material. We do feel, though, that Model Home will appeal to both the mainstream and horror audiences alike.”

Stay tuned as we’ll be bringing you exclusive coverage from the set later this month.

Three More Tie the Devil's Knot

Three More Tie the Devil's KnotThree more names have joined onto the latest film documenting both the tragedy and the mystery surrounding the newly freed West Memphis Three, Devil's Knot, and we have the skinny on all of them. Read on for the latest!

According to Deadline, Collette Wolfe (Young Adult) and Kris Polaha ("Ringer”) are joining the cast while Justin Castor (“Glee”) is circling a role. Polaha will play public defender Val Price; Wolfe will serve as Colin Firth’s character’s assistant, Glori Shettles; and Castor is in talks to play Jason Baldwin, one of the West Memphis 3.

Colin Firth, Mireille Enos, and Reese Witherspoon all star in the drama about the West Memphis 3 that Atom Egoyan is directing.

Enos will play Vicki Hutcheson, the mother of an 8-year-old boy who lives in a run-down house in West Memphis. She becomes an important witness in the murder trial of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, Jr., for the killing of three 8-year-old boys found hog-tied in a drainage ditch. Hutcheson, it becomes apparent to investigators, could be the only link between Echols and Misskelley.

Firth will play Ron Lax, a private investigator who was the first pro bono supporter of the defendants as they headed to trial in 1993. Lax built one of the most prominent private investigative firms in the Southeast and offered his services for free to the defendants, who at the time were reviled because of the heinous nature of the crime and the sensationalized reports about devil worship and ritualistic sacrifice. All of that was later proven to be unfounded, after the West Memphis 3 were convicted despite a total absence of physical evidence. Witherspoon is playing Pam Hobbs, the mother of Steven Branch, one of the victims. She initially believed the trio murdered her son and the other two boys but became persuaded they were wrongly accused. An upcoming documentary casts suspicion on her ex-husband Terry Hobbs, who was Steven Branch’s stepfather and who has denied any wrongdoing.

In August 2011 the defendants were released due to lack of evidence after spending 18 years in prison. Actual defendants Jessie Misskelley, Jr., and Jason Baldwin are executive producing Devil's Knot with Worldview's Molly Conners, Sarah Johnson Redlich, Maria Cestone, and Hoyt David Morgan. Producers are Elizabeth Fowler, Clark Peterson, Richard Saperstein, and Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow.
