SXSW 2017: Ashleigh Cummings Opens Up About Her Challenging Role in Hounds of Love

0
0

The Ben Young-directed Australian thriller Hounds of Love (review) had its North American premiere at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, and it stunned audiences and wowed us with its intensely serious and emotionally exhausting view of sexual assault.

Following a couple (Emma Booth and Stephen Curry) who kidnap a young woman (Ashleigh Cummings), we bear witness to how low a person can sink, to what depths they must fall, before it becomes too much and they snap. It’s a heartbreaking film that is helped by the stunning performances of the three leads, each of whom play their roles with frightening, yet brutally honest sincerity.

We were lucky enough to catch up with star Ashleigh Cummings at SXSW, where we spoke with her about the film, her role, and what the future holds! You can watch the video interview below.

Final Girls’ Malin Akerman Gets Evil For Rampage

More casting news has arrived for the film adaptation of the hit video game Rampage as THR has pegged The Final Girls star Malin Akerman as the film’s villainess, a calculating head of a tech company that is behind the monsters.

She joins the previously announced Jack Quaid, Matt Gerald, P.J. Byrne, Naomie Harris, Joe Manganiello, Marley Shelton, and Breanne Hill, who co-star alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The movie reunites Johnson with his San Andreas team of director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn. The writers include Ryan Engle, who penned the original draft, Adam Sztykiel, Carlton Cuse, and Ryan Condal.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but like the game, Rampage will feature three creatures — a monstrously transformed gorilla, crocodile, and wolf — who wreak havoc on North American cities and landmarks.

Producers are Flynn of Flynn Picture Company, John Rickard of Wrigley Pictures, and Hiram Garcia of Johnson’s own Seven Bucks Productions. Peyton is also producing through his ASAP Entertainment banner. Johnson and Dany Garcia are executive producing, along with Marcus Viscidi and Jeff Fierson. Wendy Jacobson will co-produce on behalf of Flynn Picture.

New Line will release Rampage on April 20, 2018.

Ratpocalypse (2017)

RatpocalypseStarring Casper Van Dien, Victoria Summer, Linda Bella, Catherine Oxenberg

Written and directed by Vladimir Uglichin

“Whoever doesn’t fight corruption will be turned into filthy, dirty rats!”

Like Noah before him, Senator John Perryman has a warning from God he wants to deliver to the politicians of the world – at least Russia, and maybe the United States. There will be no flood, no ark this time. The corrupt will be doomed to live out the rest of their lives as cartoonish looking motion capture rat people. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that is what this Ratpocalypse is all about.

Not a Syfy nature gone amok movie about rampaging rodents…

Not a Mulberry Street-style horror flick about killer rat people…

Ratpocalypse is about a American Senator on the run in Russia after corrupt Russian politicians and crooked oligarchs blame him when they begin transforming into humanoid rats right after he delivers his warning from God above to put an end to their greedy ways.

I’m still not entirely sure how to categorize this movie. I’m not even sure how to review this movie. Movies like Ratpocalypse only get made when a filmmaker has a particular demented vision that makes absolute perfect sense in their mind but somewhere between their mind and the celluloid canvas it all turned into a 22 car pile-up. I’m just an eyewitness driving by, slowing down, and getting a better look at the carnage before a reporter asks me to describe what I saw.

Originally entitled Higher Mission, Ratpocalypse is the creation of Russian architect/businessman turned first-time writer/director Vladimir Uglichin. I did a story about this movie way back in February of 2014. I’m going to go out on a limb speculating that Russia and politics being big in the news of late is why these rats finally got sprung from whatever shelf they’ve been on.

Ratpocalypse opens with United States Senator John Perryman (Casper Van Dien) having a nightmare about washing ashore on an island covered with rats that immediately begin covering him. Nightmare or calling from a higher power? He wakes up in bed with his money-grubbing wife (Catherine Oxenberg, also Van Dien’s real-life wife), who promptly answers the door to accept a briefcase full of bribery money from a mysterious figure.

Senator Perryman is so corrupt he describes himself later by advising “Don’t look for anything positive in me except for my blood type.” But it’s going to be okay from now on because the message from high above he received in this dream has led him to warn the world (again, Russia, primarily) that the corrupt are about to be physically turned into the rats they are.

He loudly proclaims this while addressing the Russian parliament. Not surprisingly, they all laugh and agree he lost his mind, the President of the United States (looks more like the dad from “Family Matters” than Obama) apologizes on behalf of our country, and even Perryman’s wife is ready to file for divorce.

For vague reasons, the Russian government does not want him to leave the country and freeze his assets. At the airport, his credit card is declined and he only has $100 cash on him. He then does what any US Senator after being stranded in a foreign country in which he committed career suicide by standing before that government and proclaiming God will turn all corrupt politicians into rat people: he picks up two hookers named Polina and Anna.

At least, I think they’re hookers. One is definitely a hooker. The other is a student being talked into her first gig by her prostitute friend. I’m not even positive they’re actually supposed to be Russian. One sounds like a Boris & Natasha character when she speaks. The other has an accent that seems to come and go. Did I read that correctly that this movie set almost entirely in Moscow was actually shot on location in Oklahoma?

Our Senator wastes no time taking both of them back to a ratty apartment despite, presumably, no way to pay for them. A matter never addressed; not that it matters since he’s too busy performing chintzy magic tricks for sex. Besides, any potential humping gets interrupted by news that there’s a mysterious outbreak causing people all over Russia to transform into human rats. A $20 million bounty has been placed on the Senator’s head; the Russian government convinced he did it by hypnosis or something.

No, really. The Russians initially speculate Perryman performed some sort of mass hypnosis during his speech causing crooked politicians and corrupt oligarchs to morph into ratmen, who then either contemplate suicide over their rattiness or double down on their deviousness as they vow to become human once more, including turning to a diabolical spiritual quack who convinces the government she can undo the ratformations by crucifying Perryman and bleeding him out.

Now the movie turns into a chase flick with the two hookers helping Senator Perryman elude capture, even as one repeatedly suggests they turn him in for the $20 million bounty. There’s also an unlikely romance brewing between the Senator and the much younger student-hooker-in-training, including a scene where Polina sings him a love song and – not making this up – parallels are made between the two as potential modern day equivalents of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene.

Ratpocalypse

This is the part where I would write “you can’t make this stuff up” but someone did make this stuff up and that’s why I’m writing about it.

Much like the equally ludicrous US-Russian anti-advertising flick Branded from several years ago, Ratpocalypse is another movie that’s trying to make some kind of point but goes about it in the clunkiest, most head-scratching manner possible. Making comparisons are almost unfair to Branded, a far more polished turd than this. Part of me wonders if this movie would have held more meaning to me if I were Russian. On the other hand, as much as the filmmaker seemed intent on crafting some sort of surreal allegory it really doesn’t seem to have anything all that deep to say. Political corruption is a serious problem. You don’t say? The solution is to not be corrupt. You don’t say?

Characters and subplots are frequently introduced only to go nowhere or get blown off almost as soon as they’re introduced. Even the performances are schizo, with Perryman and Polina played with the utmost sincerity while others seem to be striving for camp with their characters. Once the chase begins it all begins to feel like a series of interchangeable scenes edited together in a manner vaguely resembling a plotline, almost always off-kilter, periodically amusing, but one that drags more often than not. Given the bizarre mix of comedy, metaphor, and body horror, I almost want to sarcastically call this flick “Cronenberg’s Birdemic” but that might mistakenly make this white hot mess of a movie sound more enticing than it actually is. Ratpocalypse could have been an all-time great WTF movie if it was actually more entertaining about it.

The film culminates with Casper Van Dien standing before the United States Congress giving a fiery speech as to how maybe a new species of rat people should inherit the earth since rats are by nature less greedy than man. Not since John Saxon stood before the United Nations at the end of The Bees proclaiming the hyper-intelligent killer bees were the new rightful rulers of the world because of mankind’s poor treatment of the environment…

Blood Feast Theatrical Release Date Revealed

0
0

We’ve been following the progress of Marcel Walz’s Blood Feast remake for some time now, and finally we have word on the film’s theatrical release. It will hit U.S. theaters on April 28th via Medallion Releasing.

In addition, there will be a Los Angeles area premiere a few days earlier on Tuesday, April 25th, in the Chaplin Screening Room at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood.

Along with Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 alum Caroline Williams, Walz’s remake of the 1963 classic from Herschell Gordon Lewis stars Robert Rusler, Sophie Monk, and Sadie Katz. Ryan Nicholson heads up the makeup department for Blood Feast (reviews here and here), which obviously got quite a workout.

Synopsis:
Fuad Ramses (Rusler) and his family have moved from the United States to France, where they run an American diner. Since business is not going too well, Fuad also works night shifts in a museum of ancient Egyptian culture. During these long, lonely nights he is repeatedly drawn to a statue representing the seductive ancient goddess Ishtar (Katz). He becomes more and more allured by the goddess as she speaks to him in visions. Eventually he succumbs to her deadly charms.

After this pivotal night, Fuad begins a new life, in which murder and cannibalism become his daily bread. He starts to prepare a ritual feast to honor his new mistress, a lavish affair dripping with blood, organs, and intestines of human victims. As butchered bodies are heaped upon the Altar of Ishtar, Fuad slowly slips further into madness until he is no more than the goddess’ puppet; and she thirsts for the blood of Fuad’s wife and daughter too…

Back in October of last year, NBC dropped a trailer for its upcoming summer series “Midnight, Texas,” which is based on several books by Charlaine Harris with “Mr. Robot’s” Niels Arden Oplev on board as an exec producer and director; and then we didn’t hear much else.  But now the network has revealed the show’s premiere date, and we have that info for you below.

Building on the momentum of another highly successful season in which NBC once again ranks #1 in adults 18-49, the network has announced the rollout of an ambitious summer schedule that includes the premiere of scripted series “Midnight, Texas.”

Look for “Midnight, Texas” to debut on Tuesday, July 25th, from 10-11pm.

About “Midnight, Texas”:

Midnight is also home to Bobo, proprietor of the local pawn shop (Dylan Bruce, “Orphan Black”); Fiji, a witch who owns the local wiccan shop (Parisa Fitz-Henley, “Luke Cage”); Olivia, a mysterious assassin with a weapon for every occasion (Arielle Kebbel, “The Vampire Diaries”); Joe, an angel who knows all of Midnight’s secrets, having been around for millennia (Jason Lewis, “Sex and the City”); Lemuel, a wise vampire with a long history in Midnight (Peter Mensah, “True Blood”); Creek, an aspiring writer with big dreams (Sarah Ramos, “Parenthood”); and Rev. Emilio Sheehan, who can’t resist the pull of a full moon (Yul Vazquez, Captain Phillips).

Scream Reboots for Third Season

MTV’s “Scream” has been a bit of a fun mess. Sometimes it’s hard to watch, sometimes it’s decent, and then sometimes you’ll just sit there and wonder if there’s anything else you should be doing that’s more worthwhile.

It sounds like the powers-that-be have realized that, too, as according to Deadline MTV is flipping the old reboot switch for the show’s third season with a new plot and a new cast.

The network is opting for a sleek 6-episode season, which is roughly half as long as previous seasons. A good move for sure. A showrunner is currently being sought after.

Keep it here for more as it comes.

Inflame (SXSW 2017)

0
0

Starring Algi Eke, Ozgur Cevik, Kadir Cermik

Directed by Ceylan Ozgun Ozcelik

Paranoia can be a bitch, that’s for sure – if your mind is set on thinking whether or not you’re being watched, regardless of if that is an actuality, your mind is preset to think that the “eyes” are upon you…yeah, pretty insightful stuff – either that or I’ve been awake for far too long. Inflame, the latest from director Ceylan Ozgun Ozcelik, takes said paranoia to a level that attacks not only the conscious, but the subconscious mind, completely throwing a wrench into one young lady’s mental framework.

After just having its initial screening at this year’s SXSW, the film centers around a woman named Hasret (Eke), who is holding down a rather thankless job as a news editor in Istanbul, and from the film’s onset you can see the general unhappiness seeping out of her soul with every passing day. In desperate need of a mental vacation, she ventures off to her home in a dilapidated historical neighborhood, and immediately begins to suspect something isn’t right. Sensing big-brother is just over her shoulder, peering into her world, her visions escape to earlier times in her life when she spent her days with her parents who’ve now passed on. Seems that their deaths due to an auto accident back in 1993 isn’t sitting with Hasret so well – she starts to doubt the final word on their cessation – you see, that damned paranoia rearing its ugly head once again.

As her visions become more and more realistic, she inaugurates a shutdown of her social activity, shearing off any communication with her friends and workers. It all adds up to a spiral down the insanity staircase that at times is unflinchingly tough to set eyes upon, but moreso, expressively vivid in its display. Eke is fantastic as the mentally tormented lead, and her emotions fit perfectly up against the dystopian backdrop we’re viewing – what better way to frame a troubled mind than to imagine it unable to escape the world it’s in – pretty frightening stuff. If there were a negative to focus upon, it would be the unrelenting slow pace of the film, which in essence is necessary in order to convey this kind of story, but I found myself clockwatching as this movie dragged on, and I simply despise doing that. Overall, if you find yourself with some time to spare and don’t mind a little molasses with your neurosis, by all means indulge in this one.

Robert Englund Discusses Freddy vs Jason vs Ash

At the beginning of March, Seattle, WA held their 15th annual Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC), which brought tens of thousands of people from all over to celebrate all things nerdy, from gaming to film to television to comic books, along with everything in between!

One of the attendees at the event was none other than Robert Englund, the man behind Freddy Krueger! During a near-hourlong panel, Englund discussed several different Nightmare on Elm Street related topics, including how Johnny Depp helped create Freddy’s voice. However, the gem here was Englund discussing the rumored Freddy vs Jason vs Ash title, which would’ve been a direct sequel to 2003’s Freddy vs Jason.

Talking about the project, Englund made it very clear that he would’ve wanted Ash to win, which was the desire of Sam Raimi. However, studios balked at the idea, especially since Freddy, as Englund puts it, “…just got his ass kicked by Jason.” But Englund’s retort was simply, “Wait a minute, you guys. You revived me…you resurrected me with dog urine! It’s really easy to bring Freddy back. C’mon, that’s not that hard to do it right.

Englund then describes a poster that he would’ve loved to see, which featured Bruce Campbell looking like a soldier from 300 with Freddy and Jason under each arm. The title would’ve then read, “Freddy vs Jason vs Ash…Keeping the world safe from sequels!

Alas, the only time those three iconic horror names have crossed paths was in a six-issue miniseries published by Wildstorm and Dynamite Entertainment. It was written by James Kuhoric.

Derry, the Town From Stephen King’s It, Has Been Recreated in a Stunning Model

Stephen King is known for creating towns and worlds that are as much of a character in his stories as the people and creatures that inhabit them. He breathes life into every street corner, gives history to every shop, and makes every element have purpose. Such is the case with Derry, the town he created in his short story The Bird and the Album which has also reappeared in Bag of Bones, Dreamcatcher, and, important to this story, It. There are multiple iconic destinations in Derry, such as 29 Neibolt Street, the Civic Center, the Canal, and much more, making this fictional town feel real and lived in.

Enter Kassiopeya Sachenwerkler, a German artist who created a stunning diorama that recreates not only the streets of Derry but also the insidious underbelly that is seen in It. The attention to detail and the level of craftsmanship is absolutely stunning and it has to be seen to be appreciated. I grabbed a few images which can be seen below but I highly recommend going to her site to see hi-res versions.

PaleyFest LA 2017: The Walking Dead Prepping for Season 8 and Beyond

0
0

The Paley Center for Media’s 34th annual PaleyFest LA kicked off last night in the Dolby Theatre, and first up was fan favorite “The Walking Dead.” Per usual, there was a lot of chit-chat about nothing much – that crew is notoriously tight-lipped, but we did glean a few tidbits…

TVLine provided a pretty good recap of the event, and the only real teaser of what’s ahead came from showrunner Scott Gimple, who seemed to confirm we won’t be left with another cliffhanger at the end of the currently airing Season 7. “The end of this season is very much the end of a chapter,” he told the crowd. “It’s about setting up this gigantic, epic tale to come — not only in Season 8, but beyond.”

As for what he might mean by “beyond,” if Gimple is to be believed, we could only be at the midpoint of the entire saga. He pointed out that the Season 8 premiere will be the show’s 100th episode and teased it’ll be less about celebrating that milestone and “more about setting up the next hundred episodes.”

Given the longevity of the comics and where we are in that storyline, another 100 episodes is certainly doable, and I’m on board to continue the journey if they keep up the quality. But I digress…

As for what else came out of the show’s PaleyFest LA panel, Lauren Cohan said with regard to Maggie, whom we haven’t seen much of so far this season, her baby is what’s keeping her going. “What other reason would there be to experience such loss… than to have life inside you? You still have to survive. When you still have light to share, that’s just who you are. The more people she loses, the stronger the fire burns in her.”

And we can look for Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) to continue trying to atone for his past cowardice. Gilliam said of his character, “He didn’t live up to his ideal of himself and has to face that every day. He’s been able to go back and try to make up for it. He’s trying to prove that… he will be accountable for his actions. He’s not going to shrink from it.”

Be sure to hit up the link for a bit more, including how Andrew Lincoln would like to see Rick go out, and tune in tomorrow night for Episode 7.14, “The Other Side.” With just 3 episodes left, we should be seeing some action these next few weeks.

“The Walking Dead” Episode 7.14 – “The Other Side” (3/19/17)
The Saviors pay an unexpected visit to The Hilltop, catching everyone by surprise. This time they’re planning on taking more than just supplies.

Clive Barker Gives an Update on the Hellraiser Reboot: Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

There is no franchise that, in my opinion, has been more cruelly battered and shamed than the Hellraiser series. What began as a brilliant and fascinating descent into horror-meets-fantasy quickly found itself in a hole of direct-to-video releases that didn’t expand upon the mythology or offer anything new, aside from more Pinhead.

I mourn what happened because the Hellraiser franchise offered the most promise and possibility for a brilliant horror universe.

Over a year ago, I wrote a piece about how I thought Dimension could fix the Hellraiser series by moving away from Pinhead and instead delving into the world that the iconic horror villain lives in. After all, he’s a general, but he’s not the only one of his kind. There are other cenobites, ones that are older, wiser, and more vicious than he. Pinhead will never be lost as a horror villain, but that world can create so many more stunning aberrations that it boggles my mind they don’t go that route. The world of Hellraiser will always be more interesting than its primary villain.

Talks of a reboot have been happening for years, with little information coming out. However, during a recent Twitter Q&A with Shudder, horror icon Clive Barker responded to a query about the status of just such a Hellraiser reboot, explaining that a script was delivered to Dimension years ago but that was the last he heard from them until a sequel came up. Most likely, Barker is talking about Hellraiser: Judgment, which supposedly comes out on the 28th of this month.

What are your thoughts on Hellraiser? Should the franchise just be left to naturally die out? Should they keep going on the path they’re currently walking with DTV releases? Or should they be bold and try something new? Let me know in the comments!

The Son of the Grim Reaper Offers One Last Meal Before Death

Coming in mid-April is Last Meal, a new webseries from husband and wife restaurateur couple Aaron and Jessica Grimmer. The premise is that Aaron plays the son of the Grim Reaper and has decided to offer upcoming victims one last dinner and conversation before they’re slain and taken to the afterlife.

The show will include guest appearances from folks such as pet photographer Carli Davidson, comedian/actress/writer Sabrina Jalees, musician Brent Knopf, graphic novelist Nicole J. Georges, and more.

Aaron Grimmer explains, “Jessica and I, besides food and drink, are very interested in death. We were looking for a fun way to add to the cultural conversation around death and promote our restaurants…and what better way than to tell the next generation Grim Reaper story? We get deep, consume great food and drink, and then kill them.

If you’re interested in the series, it’s set to premiere in mid-April on YouTube.

Synopsis:
Aaron and Jessica Grimmer are currently running the “family business”…but doing it with a “twist” or a knife as it were. Each week, Aaron, the grim reaper’s son, and his fashion forward wife, Jessica, entertain and interview remarkably talented guests before “killing” them in an absurdly campy way…all while dining and drinking some of the most beautiful and strange dishes and cocktails imaginable. Last Meal riffs off the popularity of celebrity interviews and cooking shows in a quirky, comedic indie style…all in about 9 minutes. Think “Dinner for 5” meets “Beetlejuice” meets “The Addams Family”.

R.I.P. Renowned Horror Artist Bernie Wrightson Passes Away at 68

It is with a very heavy heart that we must report the passing of renowned horror comic artist Bernie Wrightson, who lost a long battle with brain cancer, according to his wife Liz, who made the announcement on Facebook. He was 68.

Wrightson was instrumental in creating some of the most wonderfully grim and beautifully terrifying images in comic history. Along with writer Len Wein, Wrightson co-created DC Comics’ Swamp Thing, a character that received his own live-action adaptation in a 1982 film directed by Wes Craven. He also helped co-create the Weird Mystery Tales character Destiny, who would become used heavily by Neil Gaiman.

Wrightson was not just beholden to DC Comics. He also worked with Marvel on titles such as Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, Gargoyle, Epic Illustrated, Punisher, and The Tomb of Dracula. Additionally, if you’ve seen the fantastic 1981 animated film Heavy Metal, then you might remember the “Captain Sternn” segment. This character was originally created by Wrightson in a 1980 edition of Heavy Metal magazine.

To say that Wrightson was one of the most important artists in comic book history doesn’t feel like it’s enough. His work influenced countless artists and his art leapt from pages into the minds and imaginations of everyone who saw his material. His passing is an enormous loss not only to the comic community but to the world of art in general.

We send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his friends and family and we share in the grief felt by so many around the world.

Rest in peace, Bernie. Thank you for all you’ve given us over the years.
