Between The Citadel and Sinister 2, director Ciaran Foy has carved out a nice little career for himself by bringing on the spooky. THR is reporting that Foy just signed on to direct Broad Green Pictures’ psychological horror film Eli.

Based on a 2015 Black List screenplay by David Chirchirillo, the film centers on a young boy who undergoes treatment for a rare disease at a secluded clinic, which becomes a haunted prison with no way out. Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing have been tapped to pen a rewrite.

Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy has come on to produce alongside Bellevue Prods.’ John Zaozirny. Broad Green founders Gabriel and Daniel Hammond will executive produce. Melinda Nishioka is shepherding the project for Intrepid.

Production is scheduled to begin in the summer.

In addition to the Sinister sequel, Foy has partnered with Blumhouse on a number of projects in the works, including The Shee, which he will write and direct.

RoboCop 3 (Blu-ray)

RoboCop 3Starring Robert Burke, Nancy Allen, Jill Hennessy, Rip Torn

Directed by Fred Dekker

Distributed by Scream Factory

People die in Hollywood all the time – figuratively and otherwise – but it was on November 5, 1993 that a particularly painful death occurred: that of writer/director Fred Dekker’s career. That fateful day saw the release of Dekker’s RoboCop 3 (1993), a movie that managed not only to kill a franchise but any future prospects for nearly the remainder of Dekker’s budding career. In fact, aside from some work on “Star Trek: Enterprise” (2001-2002) the only thing he’s done since is scripting duties on the upcoming The Predator (2018) for his former roommate Shane Black. After delivering two of horror’s hottest cult titles ever, with Night of the Creeps (1986) and The Monster Squad (1987), Dekker should have been cranking out genre pictures and ascending to his place as one of horror’s elite. Why he never didn’t go back to low-budget horror filmmaking after the abysmal failure of RoboCop 3, I’ll never know but, man, of all the “what ifs?” in this industry it pains me to wonder what he might’ve done.

But, then again, he did do RoboCop 3 and he has been quoted as saying that any and all fault people find with the film belongs in his lap, since the studio and everyone else up and down the production line gave him the go-ahead to see it through his way. Although, it is also known the studio wanted a “softer” RoboCop since his primary audience was kids (likely due to 1988’s “RoboCop: The Animated Series) and they felt a PG-13 rating would allow a younger crowd the chance to see him in action. I’m sure the possibility of a greater payday by opening up the potential audience was a consideration, too. Regardless, Dekker’s film is a toothless tale of altruism, with RoboCop spending most of the film helping the homeless, while the over-the-top violence and spitting satire take a far back seat… like, in the trunk.

Detroit is beginning to look more and more like a post-apocalyptic wasteland – in the movie, although that sentence is scarily applicable to 2017 Detroit, too. OCP is struggling to realize its Delta City vision due to the failure of the RoboCop program and subsequent brush with bankruptcy. The company decides to employ Urban Rehabilitators, “Rehabs”, to help speed up the gentrification of the city, forcing residents out of their homes and onto the streets, although OCP claims the Rehabs are there to supplement the waning police force. In order to facilitate their growth, OCP sells out to the Japanese Kanemitsu Corporation, a company who employs a robot enforcer of their own, called “Otomo” (Bruce Locke).

One night, during a stop to check on squatters staying in a rundown church RoboCop (Robert Burke) and Lewis (Nancy Allen) are confronted by the Rehabs who open fire, killing Lewis and damaging RoboCop. The resistance fighters take in RoboCop and give him a place to rest up until Dr. Lazarus (Jill Hennessey), one of RoboCop’s creators, is able to come and perform necessary repairs – including the deletion of Directive 4 which prevents RoboCop from acting against the Rehabs or any employee of OCP. Didn’t he erase those directives in the last movie? Anyway, RoboCop gets spruced up, dons a fancy new set of wings, and flies his metal ass out of the sewers and onto the streets, where a fierce battle between the resistance/police and OCP is underway.

There is so much this film gets wrong that to list every infraction would basically be a rundown of the entire plot, line by line. But here’s where it lost me entirely: the loss of Peter Weller. Sure, Burke kinda looks like Weller if you drink a six-pack and squint your eyes but in terms of speech and mannerisms you just don’t feel like you’re watching the same character. They almost would have been better of either suggesting this is another RoboCop (which probably would’ve been dumb) or keep the helmet on the entire time and have Weller do some ADR work. His commitment to Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch (1991) is the reason given for his absence, and it sounds legit, but his voice really made a world of difference.

Even disregarding the lack of Weller Power, the film is a tragic bore. I don’t want to see RoboCop caught up in a gentrification battle and aiding those less fortunate any more than I wanted to see Rambo fortify an Afghani village and its residents in Rambo III (1988). Yes, I am aware RoboCop’s main directive is to protect the innocent and uphold the public trust, but I want to see him doing it while blasting mf’ers away left and right. Here, he’s a neutered dog with a cone around his neck, laid up for half the running time.

If there is any consolation here, it is found in Basil Poledouris’ return to the composer’s chair. The main themes, a salient absence in RoboCop 2 (1990), make their triumphant return and are virtually the only thing that prevents this movie from looking like a big-budget fan film. If you aren’t much of a film score geek then chances are this won’t matter much but for those of us who feel a stellar score can greatly improve even a poor film this is a much-welcomed return.

A number of returning faces appear here, too, as they did in the previous entry. That sniveling worm Johnson (Felton Perry) is here once more, although The Old Man is no longer OCP CEO; that honor is now bestowed upon Rip Torn, whose character has no name and is credited as “The CEO”. There are a lot of new faces, many of whom went on to greater success (more so than this??), including Stephen Root, Daniel von Bargen, C.C.H. Pounder, Mako, and Bradley Whitford. Even still, these commendable character actors can only do so much to sell this half-baked live-action Saturday morning cartoon. RoboCop deserved a better send-off than this. At the very least – and this is damning with the faintest of praise – it’s better than the uninspired RoboCop (2014) remake.

Unlike RoboCop 2, this film did not receive a new scan and so the 1.85:1 1080p image is the same one found on MGM’s previous Blu-ray. This isn’t such a bad thing, as the last release featured a strong image with great clarity, organic film grain, consistent color saturation, and few instances of dirt & debris. And, you know, given that the film isn’t exactly a celebrated cult classic there wasn’t much reason for Scream Factory to waste money on a new transfer when the existing master was already in great shape.

As with the previous film, RoboCop 3 has an English DTS-HD MA track available in 2.0 stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Dialogue levels are nicely balanced and always clear, gunfire has a good sense of direction but weak impact, activity bursts from different corners of the room when required… but the real standout here is the return of Poledouris, who brings back all of RoboCop’s stirring themes and classic cues. It’s just a shame he didn’t provide them for a better film. Someone needs to do a fan edit of RoboCop 2 with this film’s score. Subtitles are available in English.

There are two audio commentary tracks to be found here – first, with co-writer/director Fred Dekker; second, with the “RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop” team.

“Delta City Shuffle: The Making of RoboCop 3” – Expect to find some revealing interviews with Fred Dekker, Nancy Allen, Bruce Locke, etc. here. While some express disappointment in how the film has been received this isn’t the dump fest I was expecting.

“Robo-Vision: The Effects of RoboCop 3” – Again, Phil Tippett and the major special effects players on the picture sit down to discuss what they achieved on-screen for this sequel.

“The Corporate Ladder – Interview with Actor Felton Perry” – Johnson is up to his old ways, once again.

“Training Otomo – Interview with Actor Bruce Locke and Martial Arts Trainer Bill Ryusaki”.

“War Machine – Interview with RoboCop Gun Fabricator James Belohovek”, discusses the weapons seen in the film.

A theatrical trailer and a still gallery are also included.

Special Features:

  • NEW Audio Commentary with director Fred Dekker
  • NEW Audio Commentary with the makers of “RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop” documentary – Gary Smart, Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen

Interview with Dig Two Graves Director Hunter Adams

We here at Dread Central were thankful to be able to snag a few moments with director Hunter Adams, whose recently released Dig Two Graves (review) has chilled some audiences to the bone. We spoke for a few minutes about the filming and what was it like to oversee Ted Levine in action – sit on down, grab a cold one, and enjoy!

DC: For the people that might not know too much about the film, can you give us a description as to its premise?

HA: A young girl loses her brother, and three crusty moonshiners offer to bring him back at a cost. This simple conceit kicks off a decades-spanning tale of revenge.

DC: How did you manage to come up with a story such as this, and did you find it difficult to convey from story to film?

HA: Growing up in rural Wisconsin, I’ve always been fascinated by gypsies and especially hillbilly justice. The story was difficult to film, only in the sense that we were shooting a multi-million dollar movie with little more than half a million budget. We broke most of the rules of low-budget filmmaking, so it was a challenge pulling off the elaborate set pieces. Adding to this difficulty were the frigid temperatures. We shot the film in January in Illinois, during one of the coldest winters on record.

DC: Tell us how it was to direct someone like the incredibly talented Ted Levine? Was he open to interpretation of the role, or did you just hand him the script and let him have at it?

HA: I just tried to stay out of his way and not fuck up his performance. He’s a method actor and really gets into the tactile qualities of the character. We spent a lot of time discussing wardrobe and props: the size of his cigar, the type of hat he wore, the color and material of his jacket. Ted’s a pro, and I trusted him absolutely. I think he created one of the most nuanced and memorable performances of his career.

DC: After the release of Dig Two Graves, what can fans look forward to from you down the road?

HA: I’ve been developing a feature about a real-life war that broke out between the Ku Klux Klan and bootleggers back in the 1920s. I’m also writing a limited series set on a Native American reservation that I describe as a modern day “Deadwood,” and I would love to do another horror film – just waiting for the right project.

Robert Rodriguez to Direct Escape from New York

Now, this? This is how we like to end the work week. In probably the biggest news of the week (other than the biggest cock you’ve ever seen), Deadline is reporting that Robert Rodriguez is getting the gig to direct Escape from New York at Fox!

Back in December we reported that the reboot would go back to Snake Plissken’s roots and not be a straight remake. Then it was “Luther” creator Neal Cross steering the ship. There’s no word on whether or not that will continue to be the case, but knowing Rodriguez, he’s gonna make “his” film no matter what.

Oh, glory be!

“Fear the Walking Dead” returns this summer with a third season of 16 all-new episodes, and while it’s a little premature to say whether or not it will be renewed for a fourth, if it is, it will have a new showrunner at the helm. As reported by TV Guide, Dave Erickson, the current showrunner who developed the series with Robert Kirkman, will leave at the end of its upcoming Season 3 to develop new projects at AMC.

“We’re beyond grateful for Dave’s amazing work on the first three seasons of ‘Fear the Walking Dead,'” said Joel Stillerman, AMC and Sundance TV president of original programming. “With Dave as showrunner, the series fulfilled its creative promise to expand the ‘Walking Dead’ universe in a way that was totally unique from the original series and has gone on to become the No. 2 drama series in ad-supported cable, behind only ‘The Walking Dead.’ We are also incredibly excited that Dave has chosen to stay in the AMC family to pursue his next passion project. We look forward to many more successful collaborations.”

Erickson previously worked on FX’s “Sons of Anarchy,” AMC’s “Low Winter Sun,” and Netflix’s “Marco Polo” so only time will time if his next effort falls in the horror genre – stay tuned!

New UK The Belko Experiment Trailer Gets Straight to the Point

While the US is currently enjoying the corporate carnage in Greg McLean’s The Belko Experiment, UK audiences will have to wait until the film’s theatrical release on April 21. To tide you British folk over, though, here’s a short and sharp trailer that gives a hint of the madness to come.

Written by ex-Troma contributor James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither), The Belko Experiment (review) stars John Gallagher, Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane), Tony Goldwyn (“Scandal”), Adria Arjona (“True Detective”), John C. McGinley (“Stan Against Evil”, “Scrubs”), Melonie Diaz (Fruitvale Station), Josh Brener (“Silicon Valley”) and Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy).

Synopsis:
When office workers arrive for work at Belko Industries’ isolated high-rise campus outside Bogotá, Colombia, the morning starts much like any other. Mike Pelk (John Gallagher, Jr.) smokes weed in the bathroom and flirts with his beautiful officemate Leandra (Adria Arjona) while new employee Dany Wilkins (Melonie Diaz) settles in for her first day on the job.

Everything changes when an anonymous voice comes through the intercom speakers ordering employees to kill two of their colleagues within 30 minutes. Many of the 80 employees assume the order is a sick joke, even when steel-plated doors snap shut sealing off all windows and exits. When they fail to comply before the half hour is up, the heads of four randomly chosen office workers explode. Panic reaches a fever pitch when the disembodied voice issues his next command: thirty people must be killed within the next two hours or 60 people will die.

Belko COO Barry Norris (Tony Goldwyn), a former Special Forces operative, commandeers a vault filled with guns, assembles an ad-hoc death squad and begins executing elderly and childless employees. In the ensuing melee, ordinary office workers including stoner Marty (Sean Gunn), nerdy Keith (Josh Brener), creepy Wendell (John C. McGinley) and maintenance guy Bud (Michael Rooker) reveal their true colors.

Supernatural shocks abound in director Caradog James’s Don’t Knock Twice, which lands on VOD in the UK on March 31 and DVD on April 3. To get you suitably psyched for the wicked witchery to come, here’s an exclusive clip that sets an attractively bleak tone for the flick.

Don’t Knock Twice stars Katee Sackhoff (Oculus, Riddick), Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter, Sing Street) and Nick Moran (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels).

Synopsis:
For Jess, life has never been better. A successful American sculptor, she has recently returned to the UK, where she spent much of her troubled youth. Now happily married, wealthy and settled, all that remains to make her life complete is to rebuild her relationship with Chloe, the daughter she was forced to give up nine years ago. So when Chloe agrees to come and live with her, Jess is optimistic that she can make amends and be a good mother once more.

What Jess doesn’t know is that Chloe has not come to stay because she wants to get to know her mother again. She has come because she is scared that a supernatural curse has claimed the life of her boyfriend, Danny, and is now coming for her. Chloe and Danny made the mistake of revisiting an abandoned house, once home to ‘Ginger’, a mysterious old woman said by some to be a witch. Local legend says that if you knock on her door then the vengeful ghost of Ginger will snatch you away to her hellish limbo.

At first Jess puts Chloe’s erratic behaviour down to the trauma of her past and the resentment she still feels for being abandoned. But soon Jess comes to realise that she is all that stands between her daughter and a formidable and terrifying supernatural force. Thrown into a battle for survival, Jess must learn the truth behind the legend of the witch and ultimately make the bravest sacrifice of all and knock on Ginger’s door herself…

Tobin Bell Hints at Potential Saw: Legacy Setting?

$
0
0

While we know for a fact that a lot of filming has taken place for Saw: Legacy, the upcoming eighth entry in the franchise, we don’t know much about the film itself, at least in terms of its plot. We’ve heard rumors that a lot of the film takes place in a farm setting, which would take it outside of the nameless city that the first seven films were set in. If that’s the case, it opens up the series to a whole new set of potential traps and puzzles that victims must endure while also possibly offering an entirely new atmosphere that doesn’t fall into the “grimy, green-tinted” oeuvre that the franchise has consistently given us.

Hinting that there might be a more open setting to Saw: Legacy, Tobin Bell, who played John Kramer, aka “Jigsaw”, in the series, has tweeted out a photo of the Jigsaw puppet laying against the rails of a roller coaster. He captioned the photo, “Next time you’re on a roller coaster…look up. #SawLegacy“.

While this doesn’t offer anything concrete about what we might see in the film, it’s fun to speculate! Could this mean that a portion of the film takes place at a carnival or country fair, a lá the scene where Leatherface chases Heather in Texas Chainsaw 3D? Could this be a reference to an opening stinger?

Now, it should be noted that this image isn’t new. In fact, it’s a promo photo from the 2014 edition of Fright Nights, a horror-themed park experience that was in the UK’s Thorpe Park. With that information, it seems that the best answer here is that Bell was just tweeting out a fun image he found to keep interest in Saw: Legacy high.

But what are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below!

Tobin Bell, Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, and James Gomez star. Brothers Peter and Michael Spierig (Daybreakers, Predestination) direct from a script by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfiner (Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD, Sorority Row).

Look for Saw: Legacy, which has been rated R for “grisly bloody violence and torture“, in theaters on October 27th.

Synopsis:
Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?

Earlier today we let slip the synopses for the first four episodes of Starz’s “American Gods,” but the network asked us to hold off on any spoilers until a bit closer to the show’s premiere date so stay tuned for those to be re-posted in mid-April.

To make up for it, we can instead share this colorful, neon-inspired look at 10 of the show’s main characters in poster form courtesy of showrunner Bryan Fuller. Have a peek at Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), Kristin Chenoweth (Easter, aka Ostara), Emily Browning (Laura Moon), Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday), Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Orlando Jones (Mr. Nancy), Yetide Badaki (Bilquis), Crispin Glover (Mr. World), Peter Stormare (Czernobog), and Bruce Langley (Technical Boy).

Also appearing in the series are Jeremy Davies (Jesus Christ), Corbin Bernsen (Vulcan), Demore Barnes (Mr. Ibis), Jonathan Tucker (Low Key Lyesmith), Gillian Anderson (Media), Dane Cook (Robbie), and Cloris Leachman (Zorya Vechernyaya).

“American Gods” is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel of the same name. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity, and drugs.

“American Gods” is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (“Hannibal,” The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) directed the pilot and additional episodes.

Synopsis:
When Shadow Moon is released from prison, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, and a storm begins to brew. Little does Shadow know this storm will change the course of his entire life. Left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife and suddenly hired as Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard, Shadow finds himself in the center of a world that he struggles to understand. It’s a world where magic is real, where the Old Gods fear both irrelevance and the growing power of the New Gods, like Technology and Media. Mr. Wednesday seeks to build a coalition of Old Gods to defend their existence in this new America and reclaim some of the influence that they’ve lost. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he struggles to accept this new reality and his place in it.

Horror History: Skull Island: Blood of the Kong – What Is It? We Hear from Neil Marshall

With Kong: Skull Island in theaters, some people have been noticing another project on IMDb entitled Skull Island: Blood of the Kong, listed as being from director Neil Marshall. We decided to do a bit of digging to find out!

This was a spec script written by myself and Simon Uttley that we pitched around town about a year before Legendary announced their project,” Marshall tells us. “In all honesty, I can’t remember if ours was ever pitched to Legendary or not, but it certainly went to Universal, who made Jackson’s King Kong, who passed.

In typical IMDb fashion, they have the wrong synopsis of the script. Neil and Simon’s was FAR cooler!

Our script was actually a prequel to the Kong legend, set in the 1800’s, with a group of pirates winding up on Skull Island and encountering a highly developed but dying civilization there. The ruins of this civilization are in evidence in Jackson’s version of the story. They have been using the unique local plant life as a kind of DNA-enhancing drug to breed huge gorillas to act as guardians to protect them from the ferocious dinosaurs that also inhabit the island. But the guardians – known as the Kong – have since turned on their creators in revolt. Our pirates wander right into the middle of a war raging between the two factions. Ultimately both sides are wiped out in a huge volcanic eruption, leaving only one infant ape alive – this would of course grow up to be the King Kong we know and love. But basically, pirates and dinosaurs! What more more do you want?

In a perfect world, I tell ya! Chalk this one up to cool stuff we’ll never see!

After six solid seasons, NBC’s “Grimm” is coming to an end on Friday, and the network has unveiled the final episode’s trailer along with releasing a farewell “thank you” video from all the major players. In order to send the show off in style, we also have a gallery of stills from the ep, appropriately titled “The End,” to share.

I’ve been to a few San Diego Comic-Cons with this crew, and you won’t meet a nicer bunch. On behalf of the Grimmsters here on the DC site, a huge THANK YOU to the cast & crew for a fun ride these past six years! We’ll be looking forward to seeing where you all land next.

“Grimm” Episode 6.13 – “The End” (airs 3/31/17)

Elsewhere, Capt. Renard (Sasha Roiz) and Adalind (Claire Coffee) try to keep Diana (Hannah R. Loyd) and baby Kelly safe as the threat has its eyes set on the children. Russell Hornsby and Reggie Lee also star.

All day long we’ve been giving you some fresh stills from all the genre flicks showing at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, and rather than keep dripping them out, we figured why not open a vein?

Read on for some new looks at Hounds of Love, Pilgrimage, Sweet Virginia, The Endless, and Thumper!

Hounds of Love:

Dark forces lurk behind the sunny façade of an unassuming Australian suburb in Ben Young’s stylish directorial debut. This ‘80s-set true crime thriller follows 17-year-old Vicki on the night she’s abducted by a disturbed couple. While bound to a bed inside of the kidnappers’ home and subjected to psychological and physical torture, Vicki must find a way to drive a wedge between her unhinged captors and escape by any means necessary. With Emma Booth, Ashleigh Cummings, Stephen Curry, Susie Porter, Damian de Montemas, and Harrison Gilbertson. A Gunpowder & Sky release. Presented in partnership with Venice Days. Directed and written by Ben Young.

Pilgrimage:

In 13th-century Ireland, a cadre of monks travel through the war-torn countryside on a mission to bring their land’s most sacred relic to Rome. But other forces are gaining on them, as the true significance of the relic becomes dangerously apparent. A period drama crossed with an action/adventure road movie, Pilgrimage delivers a profound lesson on religious fervor and the savagery of soldiers with a cause. With Tom Holland, Richard Armitage, Jon Bernthal, John Lynch, Stanley Weber. Directed by Brendan Muldowney, written by Jamie Hannigan.

Sweet Virginia:

Jon Bernthal, Rosemarie DeWitt, Imogen Poots, Odessa Young, and a spectacular Christopher Abbott star in this gritty neo-Western with echoes of the early Coen Brothers: a burglary-homicide rattles the residents of a small Alaska town. Jamie Dagg’s sophomore feature is a haunting drama about the predator in each of us and the prices we pay to start over. Directed by Jamie Dagg, written by The China Brothers.

Sweet Virginia

The Endless:

Years after escaping a cult as teenagers, brothers Aaron and Justin return to their former home after receiving a mysterious message. While Aaron is quickly drawn back into the fold, Justin remains uneasy. However, neither can deny it when strange events begin happening that seem to mirror the cult’s unusual axioms. Following their Tribeca breakout, Resolution, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead direct and star in another intensely original genre hybrid. With Tate Ellington, Callie Hernandez, James Jordan, and Lew Temple. Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, written by Justin Benson.

Thumper:

This suspenseful crime drama follows Kat Carter (Eliza Taylor), the troubled new girl in a school harboring a deep secret. When she attracts the attention of the volatile gang leader Wyatt (a menacing Pablo Schreiber), Kat’s own hidden secrets threaten to put her life in danger. Executive produced by Cary Fukunaga, the film features raw supporting turns from Lena Headey, Daniel Webber, Ben Feldman, and Grant Harvey. Directed and written by Jordan Ross.
