Ben Wheatley Talks Freakshift and Compares it to 50’s B-Movies

Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire comes out this Friday, which means tons of interviews are being posted due to embargoes being lifted. And in one such interview with Collider, Wheatley was asked about his next movie, the action horror/thriller Freakshift, which will star Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander (Ex-Machina).

In the interview Wheatley explains, “It’s monsters, shotguns, trucks, fighting at night, and it’s in the future, things jumping out like crabs. Stuff with claws. That’s the elevator pitch. And August is when we shoot it.”

While that sounds radical, wild, and potentially very dark, he explains that they’re not going for an over-the-top aesthetic but rather are taking inspiration from the 50’s! “It will be dynamic and exciting the same way that Free Fire is. But it won’t be sadistic. But it will be fun. It’s a kind of a 50s B-movie done through the prism of ‘Hill Street Blues’ and Doom,” he adds.

The story will follow Vikander (pictured below), who leads a team of misfit cops that are tasked with taking down nocturnal underground monsters. Hammer will be playing her love interest.

Wheatley co-wrote the script with Amy Jump while his longtime producing partner Andrew Starke will be producing via their Rook Films banner.

Yesterday pictures were posted of the Empire Magazine Alien: Covenant spread, which revealed a ton of information not only about the upcoming film but also where the franchise is heading. One tidbit that is sending the internet into a frenzy is the fact that director Ridley Scott has made it clear that he’s open to the possibility of digitally de-aging Sigourney Weaver to bring back Ellen Ripley, simply saying, “You could do that.

It’s an interesting idea that has been done before, such as with Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen in X-Men: The Last Stand. Robert Downey, Jr., also got this treatment in Captain America: Civil War. Personally, if the actors don’t have a problem with it, neither do I.

In addition to this tidbit, Scott explains that a 10-page synopsis for the next film has been written by John Logan, who also promises that there will be “…different mutations” of the iconic Xenomorph. Since Alien: Covenant is already bringing us a new creature called the Neomorph, it’ll be fun to see what else they have cooked up.

Ridley Scott directed the film, which was written by John Logan and Dante Harper based on a story by Jack Paglen and Michael Green.

Look for Alien: Covenant everywhere on May 19th.

Synopsis:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Tragic news has come out via Deadline, who are reporting that producer J.C. Spink has passed away at the age of 45. He was found unresponsive in his home on April 18th, and coroner Ed Winter is saying that it was reported as possibly the result of natural causes, although they will be investigating further.

Spink and his college roommate, Chris Bender, formed the management company Benderspink, which dissolved last year after an 18-year run. Through the company they were producers on films such as The Butterfly Effect, Zombeavers, The Hole, The Ring, The Ring Two, Rings, A History of Violence, Red Eye, The Ruins, and more.

He’s a remarkable filmmaker,” Pratt says of director Bayona. “If you haven’t seen The Impossible or A Monster Calls, I mean he’s really visually masterful. Deep emotions and suspense. Chris Pratt stars alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Jones, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Ted Levine, Rafe Spall, James Cromwell, and Daniella Pineda. J.A. Bayona is on board to direct with Frank Marshall producing along with Pat Crowley and Belén Atienza.

Gina Philips NOT Starring in Jeepers Creepers 3; Plot Details Refuted

Things are constantly twisting and turning in the Jeepers Creepers camp. The long-gestating third film in the franchise, Jeepers Creepers 3, has finally wrapped; and with that wrap some interesting details have emerged.

First of all, the storyline appears to have changed. Up until now we thought the third film would be following Gina Philips’ return as Trish, who now worries that years later, the Creeper (once again played by Jonathan Breck) will take her son, just as it did her brother. Her solution is to go after the Creeper herself.

That was a plotline that emerged when the film was known as Jeepers Creepers 3: Cathedral. Star Stan Shaw recently took to Twitter to answer a fan’s question about the film, which led to this nugget of news…

This is compounded by other info that surfaced via Horror Freak News indicating that Philips is making a cameo appearance in the film and is NOT the star.

We’ll see if we can sort all this out for you and come back with some hard facts.

Directed by Victor Salva, Jeepers Creepers 3 stars Jonathan Breck as the Creeper, Meg Foster (They Live, Masters of the Universe, The Lords of Salem, 31), Chester Rushing (“Stranger Things“), Ryan Moore (Pitchfork), Patrick Thomas Cragin (“How to Be a Vampire”), Brandon Smith (“From Dusk Till Dawn”), Gabrielle Haugh (Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?), Justin Hall (Django Unchained), Stan Shaw, Michael Papajohn, Megan Elizabeth Wright, Jason Bayle, Cade Burk, Joyce Giraud, Jordan Salloum, Don Yesso, David Davis, Brandon Stacy, Casey Hendershot, Thomas Francis Murphy, and Carrie Lazar.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
Dread Central both acknowledges and condemns the past crimes committed by Victor Salva. However, we are a news website dedicated to bringing you the headlines, and we cannot and will not let our personal beliefs influence how we bring you news. Instead, we leave it for you to decide whom or what you should or shouldn’t support. For those of you who want to further rally against Salva, there’s a petition here to boycott his upcoming film. Thank you.

The official trailer for Sofia Coppola’s upcoming period thriller The Beguiled, which is based on the novel by Thomas Cullinan, has been released; and it can be seen here.

Now, I don’t know if anyone else is getting this from the footage, but I have a sneaky suspicion that there’s going to be a moment that hearkens to Stephen King’s Misery. I really wouldn’t be surprised if Colin Farrell ends the film down a limb or two…

The Beguiled stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence, Angourie Rice, Emma Howard, and Addison Riecke. It will hit limited theaters on June 23rd and then expands to more locations on the 30th.

Synopsis:

We’re edging ever closer to the April 30th premiere of “American Gods” on Starz, and in case Ted’s review of Episodes 1.01-1.04 didn’t whet your appetites enough, today we have two new videos to share.

The first introduces us to Low Key Lyesmith (aka Loki, the Norse trickster god), Shadow’s old prison mate, portrayed by Jonathan Tucker. In the video Shadow (Ricky Whittle) avoids trouble at the airport with help from Low Key, proving that sometimes the simplest advice is also the wisest.

Next up, we have Shadow meeting Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) on an airplane. Shadow is on his way to his wife’s funeral after being released from prison when he encounters the enigmatic con man.

“American Gods” stars Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), Kristin Chenoweth (Easter, aka Ostara), Jeremy Davies (Jesus Christ), Emily Browning (Laura Moon), Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday), Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Orlando Jones (Mr. Nancy), Yetide Badaki (Bilquis), Bruce Langley (Technical Boy), Corbin Bernsen (Vulcan), Crispin Glover (Mr. World), Demore Barnes (Mr. Ibis), Jonathan Tucker (Low Key Lyesmith), Gillian Anderson (Media), Peter Stormare (Czernobog), Dane Cook (Robbie), and Cloris Leachman (Zorya Vechernyaya).

Related Story: American Gods: Synopses Revealed for the First Four Episodes

The series is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel of the same name, which has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity, and drugs.

“American Gods” is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (“Hannibal,” The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) is directing the pilot and additional episodes.

Synopsis:
When Shadow Moon is released from prison, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, and a storm begins to brew. Little does Shadow know this storm will change the course of his entire life. Left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife and suddenly hired as Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard, Shadow finds himself in the center of a world that he struggles to understand. It’s a world where magic is real, where the Old Gods fear both irrelevance and the growing power of the New Gods, like Technology and Media. Mr. Wednesday seeks to build a coalition of Old Gods to defend their existence in this new America and reclaim some of the influence that they’ve lost. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he struggles to accept this new reality and his place in it.

Death Race: Anarchy, the fourth film in the series that began in 2008 and the sequel to 2013’s Death Race: Inferno, is already finished and is looking at a 2018 release date. We spoke with writer Tony Giglio, who says that nothing is locked down, but the previous two entries were both released in January.

If the IMDb listing is accurate, this film will see the return of Frederick Koehler as “Lists” and Danny Trejo as “Goldberg.” Also joining the film are Zach McGowan, Christine Marzano, Yennis Cheung, Cassie Clare, Lucy Aarden, Danny Glover, and Nicholas Aaron.

Giglio wrote both Death Race 2 and Death Race: Inferno, so he has an intimate relationship with this series and how to continue it.

No plot details or footage has yet been released, so enjoy this clip from the 2008 film where a giant semi gets utterly wasted. Oh, and it was actually done.

Final Girls Berlin Film Festival Returns for Second Edition in June; Submissions Still Open

Another female-centric film fest is heading our way soon, and if you’re in or near Germany (or maybe planning to travel overseas this summer), we have the early details on the Final Girls Berlin Film Festival, taking place in June. Submissions are still open so if you’re a budding filmmaker, pay close attention!

From the Press Release:
Final Girls Berlin Film Festival, taking place June 9-11, 2017, is dedicated to showcasing horror directed, written, and produced by women filmmakers from around the world. The festival is committed to carving out space for female visions in horror – whether monstrous, heroic, or some messy combination of the two. We wish to highlight underrepresented voices and are excited to welcome works by queer, non-binary, and POC filmmakers.

“Women’s genre output is severely underrepresented in horror communities, and we want to do our bit in changing that,” says festival programmer Sara Neidorf.

“Many believe that women who love genre films are a minority, but that’s simply not true: Women make up half or more of horror audiences, and it’s high time they have a chance to watch films that aren’t dominated by the male gaze or filled with one-dimensional, disposable female characters. It’s time to celebrate films that represent us, instead of objectify us,” says festival programmer Eli Lewy.

“The first edition of the festival in February 2017 was positively exhilarating; and this, along with the positive audience feedback we received, made us want to have another edition as quickly as humanly possible,” says festival programmer Lara Mandelbrot.

“We took a tiny break and are now ready to assault you with more female-driven horror offerings! The June edition will take place at Berlin’s oldest cinema, Moviemento. Expect three days filled with eerie art, riveting talks, informative panels, and lots of horror films made by women,” says Neidorf.

We are still accepting submissions and invite you to submit your horror short or feature if you believe you fit our description. Our regular deadline is April 22nd, and our late deadline is May 3rd so don’t miss your chance!

Submit your film to Final Girls Berlin Film Festival via either: withoutabox.com or filmfreeway.com.

Stay tuned for more updates in the future, including the program announcement, exciting guests, and rad merch info!

Hulu Calls Scott Derrickson for Locke and Key!

Rejoice, Locke & Key fans! The news you’ve been wanting forever has now come. There’s been talk about an adaptation of the much beloved Joe Hill comic for a few years now, but streaming service Hulu is getting set to make it a reality.

The news comes via Deadline, who report that Hulu has given a pilot order to “Locke & Key,” a one-hour horror/fantasy drama adaptation of the IDW comic by Joe Hill (The Fireman) and artist Gabriel Rodriguez (Little Nemo). The project comes from Hill, Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “Bates Motel,” “The Strain”), and IDW Entertainment with Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson set to direct.

Cuse developed “Locke & Key” with Hill, who wrote the script on spec. The finished script was sent to one director, Derrickson, who came on board right away and, if the pilot goes to series, is expected to stay with the show for the first season and direct multiple episodes before segueing to the Doctor Strange sequel.

The script, with Derrickson attached, was taken out to the marketplace, garnering strong interest from multiple networks before landing at Hulu in a very competitive situation.

Locke & Key revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys and will stop at nothing to attain them.

Cuse will serve as showrunner. He is executive producing with Hill; Derrickson; Lindsey Springer of Carlton Cuse Prods.; Ted Adams, CEO of IDW Media Holdings; and David Ozer, President of IDW Entertainment.

More on this as it comes.
