An All-Female Punk Rock Band Fights Nasty Creatures in a Plane in Dead Air

$

That headline drew you in, didn’t it?

Currently on Indiegogo is Dead Air, a horror comedy short film whose goal is to use as much practical FX as possible. The story follows Monster Kitten, an all-female punk rock band who end up fighting for their lives against a horde of gremlin-like critters while on a plane 30,000 feet in the air. Personally, that’s the kind of story that has immediately hooked me.

Now, the crowdfunding push is aiming for £10,000, although more will allow them to create something even better. The end goal of director Geoff Harmer and writer Peter Hearn, who both produce on the film, is to use this short film as a pitch for a feature-length film. That being said, the short will be shown at festivals and other venues should it receive all the funding.

So, if this sounds like something that’s up your alley, click on the above link to lend your support!

Shot on Shitteo, of course! If you’re unfamiliar with the term, fear not. Brad spared some of his time to explain the backstory behind this long delayed project and the inspiration that continues to drive Stoned Gremlin Productions to get this released to the world.

Gunship Reissuing Debut Album on Black Vinyl With a Bonus Track!

Synthwave masters Gunship have announced that they are reissuing their debut album on black vinyl, which can be ordered today at their official store. The 2xLP version comes in brand new packaging and also includes a new remix of Lionface’s “No Hope State” as a bonus track. In fact, the band is so excited about this new track that they’ve created a music video for the remix, which will be right up the alley of any fan of Mad Max or John Carpenter!

Gunship’s remix takes the original track, which is a wonderful amalgamation of electronica and RnB in its own right, and transforms it into a delightfully 80’s-inspired offering. The marriage of Gunship’s synth with Lionface’s dominating vocals results in something truly special.

The reissue is a 12″ Double Gatefold 2xLP 180 Gram heavyweight vinyl with packaging house in a matte black sleeve with neon pink metallic foil.

Talking about the new remix, Gunship state, “The moment we heard the door-kicking-in-intensity of Kat’s voice belting out the incredible melodies and lyrics in this song we knew we had to remix it. “What if John Carpenter wrote an emotional 80’s power ballad?” was our working brief. We used vintage synths and drum machines to evoke a genuine sense of the golden age of cinema – but all credit to Kat – she wrote a real face melter here!

Kat Marsh, aka Lionface, talks about “No Hope State”, saying, “No Hope State was the first ballad I’d written for my Lionface project and it’s a love song to the National Health Service. It’s also a rallying cry against it’s destruction. I think a lot of people are angry about the sneaky privatisation and the extreme cuts to services in recent years. It’s such a precious thing, we’re so lucky to have it and it needs to be protected.

Regarding the Gunship remix, she offers, “My connection with Gunship actually started with Martin Grech. We were working at the same studio and he ended up recording guitars on my ‘Battle’ EP. He spoke about his involvement on the Gunship album and how great they were and introduced us. They ended up creating much more than a remix, it’s a full on re-imagining of the song. It’s become the definitive version for me!

Below is the “No Hope States” video as well as the vinyl announcement and packaging photos.

Director Silver Strain explains the video:

No Hope State is an homage to the numerous Road Warrior rip-offs of the 80s, 2-D animation, Heavy Metal magazine and the cinema of Carpenter, Argento & Leone. An allegorical take on the dismantling of the healthcare system, dressed as a post apocalyptic music video with a fragmented revenge narrative.

My biggest influence is and always has been John Carpenter. After Prince of Darkness and They Live, it was announced that Carpenter would direct a movie called Pincushion, featuring a badass female protagonist battling mutants and marauders in her souped-up all-terrain vehicle, while transporting the cure for a deadly plague through the post-apocalyptic wasteland. My teenage mind was reeling with anticipation at seeing a PA flick directed and scored by my favorite filmmaker. Sharon Stone was supposed to be the lead. She was then replaced by Cher, who reportedly had Carpenter fired from the project. It remains unfilmed to this day. While working on No Hope State, Pincushion (or what Pincushion might have been like) was always in the back of my mind.“

Blood Feast Theatrical Release Expanded and Pushed Back to June 23rd

Marcel Walz’s Blood Feast is starting to look like “The Little Remake that Could” as news has come that instead of opening this weekend, the film’s theatrical run is being expanded due to fan demand; and in order to accommodate said expansion, the release date is being pushed back a few months… from the previously announced April 28th to June 23rd.

From the Press Release:
The 1963 cult-classic horror film Blood Feast, from director Herschell Gordon Lewis, attracted and shocked audiences worldwide before enjoying a lucrative second life as a home video hit that ultimately sold more than 1.5 million units. Now, more than 50 years since the original creation, the official, long-awaited remake will hit theaters across the United States and Canada this summer.

Hannover House and Crimson Forest Entertainment Group have entered into a distribution agreement with producer Emsch Schneider for a June 23rd nationwide theatrical release of Blood Feast (review), representing a substantial expansion of the film’s previously planned, limited opening. The release will carry the branding of both Hannover House and Crimson Forest and will reach all of the top 40 largest markets, ranging from single-screen exclusive engagements to mini-multiple runs.

“The enthusiasm for this official remake has been staggering,” said Eric Parkinson, C.E.O. of Hannover House. “We’re getting swamped with calls and emails from horror media and fans across the country asking us to make sure that we open at a local theater, or that they have a large fan group ready to organize an event screening. It didn’t take long for us to recognize that the large following from the original film’s home video release has generated an enthusiastic fan base to see the official remake. Expanding our theatrical plans into a national release during mid-summer shows our confidence in the film’s commercial appeal,” he concluded.

The official remake was directed by acclaimed German director Marcel Walz and features an impressive cast – including an appearance by the 90-year-old Herschell Gordon Lewis, filmed shortly before his death late last year. Other cast members include Robert Rusler (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2), Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), and Sophie Monk (The Hills Run Red).

An October home video release is anticipated, with a subscription video-on-demand window available for December.

“The fan base is large and quite vocal,” Parkinson continued. “We hope to channel this energy into surprising box office results and establish some positive momentum before hitting the home video and VOD markets in the fall.“

Synopsis:
Fuad Ramses (Rusler) and his family have moved from the United States to France, where they run an American diner. Since business is not going too well, Fuad also works night shifts in a museum of ancient Egyptian culture. During these long, lonely nights he is repeatedly drawn to a statue representing the seductive ancient goddess Ishtar (Katz). He becomes more and more allured by the goddess as she speaks to him in visions. Eventually he succumbs to her deadly charms.

After this pivotal night, Fuad begins a new life, in which murder and cannibalism become his daily bread. He starts to prepare a ritual feast to honor his new mistress, a lavish affair dripping with blood, organs, and intestines of human victims. As butchered bodies are heaped upon the Altar of Ishtar, Fuad slowly slips further into madness until he is no more than the goddess’ puppet; and she thirsts for the blood of Fuad’s wife and daughter too…

New Fear the Walking Dead Season 3 Teaser Shows a World Gone Mad

A common theme of zombie shows is exploring how far a person can go before losing his or her humanity, and from the looks of this new teaser, the survivors on “Fear the Walking Dead” will be facing that question themselves during the upcoming Season 3.

Face what you fear… fear what you become when “Fear the Walking Dead” returns to AMC on June 3rd with two back-to-back episodes.

As “Fear the Walking Dead” returns for Season 3, our families will be brought together in the vibrant and violent region formerly known as the U.S.-Mexico Border. With international lines done away with following the world’s end, our characters must attempt to rebuild not only society, but family as well.

Madison has reconnected with Travis, her apocalyptic partner, but Alicia has been fractured by her murder of Andres. Madison’s son is only a few miles from his mother, but Nick’s first action as a leader saw him and Luciana ambushed by an American militia group – the couple escaped death, Luciana was shot, and Nick no longer feels immortal. Recovering both emotionally and physically, Strand has his sights set on harnessing the new world’s currency, and Ofelia’s captivity will test her ability to survive and see if she can muster the savagery of her father.

The series is executive produced by showrunner Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, and David Alpert and stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia, Colman Domingo as Strand, and Danay Garcia as Luciana. Joining the cast as series regulars for Season 3 are Dayton Callie (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Deadwood”), Daniel Sharman (“The Originals,” “Teen Wolf”), and Sam Underwood (“The Following”), who will play the Otto family, founders of a survivalist organization who prepared for the fall of democracy but didn’t anticipate the rise of the dead, as well as Lisandra Tena (“Chicago P.D.”) as Lola Guerrero.

Happytime Murders Sounds Like a Darker Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Melissa McCarthy has been confirmed to star in and co-produce the upcoming comedy thriller Happytime Murders, a film that sees puppets and humans interacting in everyday situations. The film is being directed by Brian Henson, the son of the famous puppet creator Jim Henson, according to The Wrap.

McCarthy explains, “When a really good script combines puppet strippers, Los Angeles’ underbelly and comedy, it’s like my fever dream has finally come true.”

Production on the film begins in August.

The description of the film is Avenue Q meets L.A. Confidential, which sounds pretty damn entertaining. For some reason, I’m also reminded of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, although I can’t put my finger on why. No matter what, films like this intrigue me because they’re the ones willing to try something new and something original.

Dave Made a Maze Picked Up by Gravitas Ventures for North American Release

The surreal fantasy film Dave Made a Maze, which won the Audience Award for Best Narrative at Slamdance Film Festival, has been picked up by Gravitas Ventures for North American distribution, according to Variety. No release plans have been made yet, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one!

Dave Made a Maze stars Nick Thune, Meera Rohit Kumbhani, Kirsten Vangsness, Stephanie Allynne, James Urbaniak, Scott Krinsky, Adam Busch, John Hennigan, Kamilla Alnes, Frank Caeti, Tim Nordwind, and Scott Narver. Bill Watterson directs.

Watterson explains, “We wanted to re-imagine classic 80s adventure films with a comedic edge and a higher body count. To reignite that tactile sense of wonder triggered by those films, we played in the sandbox of old-school practical effects – puppetry, miniatures, stop-motion animation, and in-camera optical illusions.

Synopsis:
Dave, an artist who has yet to complete anything significant in his career, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to become trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation. His girlfriend, Annie, leads a band of oddball explorers on a rescue mission — but they find themselves trapped in an ever-changing supernatural world, threatened by booby traps and pursued by a bloodthirsty Minotaur.

Roger Corman Wants To Get Bloody AND Political

$

Oh, Roger Corman… You never fail to go for the absurd and extreme, do you?

The acclaimed cult and B-horror director revealed this past weekend at the Overlook Film Festival that he wants to make a movie based on Rodrigo Duterte, the ultra violent President of the Philippines who has used an anti-drug crackdown to kill a reported 7,000+ people. Corman’s film, tentatively titled Death Squad, will take place in, you guessed it, a post-apocalyptic world where a dictator uses his power to order the deaths of those he deems criminals, which also includes anyone who doesn’t go along with his plan.

Speaking with Indiewire, Corman explains that he’d like for this film to have a slightly higher budget than normal but that he’d still be comfortable with a relatively small amount.

In regards to the film, he explains that the dictator isn’t necessarily a bad guy, he just loses himself in the power he wields. “As he gets into it, he finds there’s an opposition to what he’s doing and he starts to say, ‘Well, that guy is against me. I think he’s a criminal. Let’s kill him.’ He starts saying he’s going to kill the criminals and ends up saying I’m going to kill anybody who resists me, but in his mind, it’s the same rationale…he’s expanding his interpretation of what a killer is,” Corman states.

Corman is also hard at work on Piranha JPN: Teeth of the Piranha, Japan’s take on the Piranha franchise.

Alright, so this isn’t Rodrigo Duterte but Immortan Joe is a post-apocalyptic dictator. It works, okay?

Jordan Peele Signs First-Look Deal With Universal

After the unbelievable success of Get Out (review), Jordan Peele probably had an enormous wealth of opportunities at his fingertips. That film was made on a budget of less than $5 million and it has since drawn in nearly $175 million worldwide, making it the the best performing film at Blumhouse Productions and it also broke The Blair Witch Project‘s record of an original film from a debut director. It’s a stunning set of achievements, matched by the near-universal critical acclaim that the film has received.

Due to the success, Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions has now locked into a two year first-look deal with Universal, who already have their eyes set on a social thriller that he will write, direct, and produce, according to THR. The film will reportedly have a budget of five times what Get Out cost, so Peele will have a much larger playground in which to create his film.

Universal chairman Donna Langley gushes, “Through extraordinary imagination and fearless humor, Jordan has proven himself to be a game-changer who is driven to tell stories that are as commercially entertaining as they are disruptive and provocative. The entire Universal family takes great pride in his incomparable filmmaking debut, and feel fortunate that this studio will be Jordan’s home for many years to come.

Through this deal, Peele will be working on and with under-represented people, both in front of and behind the camera. He’ll also still get to work with Jason Blum and Blumhouse on smaller budget films.

Witches – Dante Tomaselli (Music)

WitchesComposed by Dante Tomaselli

Filmmaker Dante Tomaselli has made a few independent horror films, now he’s making independent horror music.

“Witches,” his latest full-length release, is a very confused beast.  It just doesn’t know quite what it wants to be.

At times, like the opening track “Atheist,” we have ambient pieces overlaid with audio clips of preachers like cult leader Jim Jones.  Others aren’t far removed from Halloween sound effect albums with creaking doors and screams from hell.  Yet other tracks are more musically akin to synth-heavy darkwave bands.

At 13 tracks, there’s a lot of room for this variety, but the whole affair lacks cohesion.  From track to track, we’re thrown between genres with no apparent rhyme or reason.  One might expect a thematic link between the songs, but I was unable to detect one, other than religious themes from the audio samples.  Most of Tomaselli’s filmography has similar religious themes, so this isn’t a surprise, but the overall lack of direction isn’t what you’d expect from a storyteller.

The collection isn’t without highlights.  The more musical tracks are enjoyable, and do a solid job of setting a mood.  But the remainder vacillates from experimental to random: lots of noise without being industrial, those spoken audio clips peppered throughout yet never really coming together to make a point.

If you’ve somehow reached the end of the brutally difficult adventure and find yourself hungry for more, then you might be interested in the newly released Dragon of the North DLC. Set shortly after the events of the main game, it finds our Irish samurai hero William traveling to Japan’s Oshu region to once again do what he does best: slaughter a whole bunch of enemies.

If you feel like embarking on yet another adventure where you’ll probably find yourself dying more than your foes, then you can purchase the Dragon of the North DLC from the PlayStation Store.

Return once more to the Yokai infested landscape of Japan’s warring states and venture deep into its embattled northern provinces.

In this story expansion for Nioh – Dragon of the North follows William’s valiant struggle in the main game and opens up the Oshu region, where ambitious ruler Masamune Date is secretly gathering spirit stones.

Encounter fearsome enemies and allies across three distinct stages, and develop William’s combat skills further with powerful new Ninjutsu, Onmyo magic and Guardian Spirits. Plus, discover legendary armour sets and weapons, including the Odachi great katana.

This add-on is also included as part of the Nioh Season Pass, alongside the “Defiant Honour” and “Bloodshed’s End” expansion packs.
