Kristanna Loken Talks Black Rose, Satisfying Her Action Fans, and More!

$

Alexander Nevsky and Kristanna Loken have teamed up for the crime thriller Black Rose, and it’s surprisingly entertaining to see the two of them onscreen together. Especially for Loken, seeing her in action re-ignites the fandom she generated as the T-X model in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

Loken recently spoke with us about pleasing her fan base, her new roles as producer and mother, and her interest in being in one of the new Star Wars films.

Black Rose

DC: You’ve played so many strong characters, and I know Black Rose really isn’t an exception, but do you also wish that sometimes you’d be considered for more sensitive, dramatic roles? Maybe a mom, since that’s a new thing in your life?

KL: Yeah, that’s a good question. I love to play a whole array of characters without question. I actually have a production company with a couple partners called Trio Entertainment, and we’ve got ten films and two TV series on our slate so, yes, you’ll definitely see me in different types of roles. I’ll be producing behind the camera and possibly even directing. There will be more diversity, and yes, I think I’m much more equipped to play mothers than pre-actual motherhood roles so…

DC: With something like Black Rose, it must be interesting when you’ve got these other films that you’re juggling and have to do press for a film that was actually shot a while back ago, is that right?

KL: It was, yeah. I’m excited that we’re getting a nice little buzz on the film and people seem to really be enjoying it. In the independent film world, you just never know what you’re gonna get. I’ve really got to take my hat off to Alexander, who just eats, sleeps, and breathes his work. He really wanted people to see it here in the U.S., and I’m glad people will be given a chance to do just that.

DC: When did you first connect with Alexander Nevsky? You guys have known each other for a while, and you make a good team.

KL: Thank you! I first met Alexander in 2003 when we were doing press for Terminator. He became a fan and circled back around years later and wanted the opportunity to work with me.

DC: Speaking of how he became a fan, you definitely have a strong fan base. Do you hear from your fans often, and did you notice that community growing after Terminator 3 or even the “Mortal Combat” television show? Do you ever attend sci-fi conventions?

KL: Definitely. I do conventions and have had the pleasure of meeting so many fans from around the world. Before email, I would get lots and lots of fan mail; now of course it’s the digital age so I get a lot of reaction from social media. It’s pretty wonderful. I have to say, if it wasn’t for people enjoying my work, I wouldn’t have work! It really touches me when I meet people and they’ve followed my career and they know me from this or that project no matter how obscure they may be… to know that I somehow impacted somebody’s life in some way, no matter how small or how brief.

DC: It’s great when you can actually feel that from your fans. Seeing the level of fandom that just happened at the Star Wars Celebration and seeing how the actors were touched by everything was pretty moving. Have you ever thought about being in a Star Wars film? I could see you being Captain Phasma or someone like that character.

KL: I would absolutely love that!  It’s a great genre to be a part of because the scope of subject matter in sci-fi is so far-reaching. I think that’s what’s really exciting about it. So yeah, I would love to be a part of another great franchise.

DC: Do you think action fans will get their fill with Black Rose?

KL: It think we have a great little suspense thriller also with some action. Hopefully they’ll enjoy the story and also enjoy the action sequences as well.

Black Rose is now available on VOD and is also new to DVD this week! Written by Brent Huff and George Saunders, the film is directed by Alexander Nevsky, who also stars in the lead role. Co-starring in the film are Kristanna Loken, Robert Davi, and Adrian Paul.

Synopsis:
A Russian Police Major is enlisted by the LAPD to help solve a series of gruesome murders perpetrated against young women by a sadistic sociopathic killer on the mean streets of Hollywood.

Two years ago we posted a story about how Bollywood was planning on making its own version of Mike Flanagan’s Oculus. Today a poster and short teaser for Dobaara: See Your Evil have been released, and while they give no plot points or information about the film itself, they do offer a taste of the feel and atmosphere of the film, which looks to be quite grimy and spooky.

Furthermore, they state that the film is adapted from “…one of the scariest movies of all time…

Directed by Prawaal Raman, Dobaara: See Your Evil stars Huma Qureshi, Saqib Saleem, Adil Hussain, Lisa Ray, Rhea Chakraborty, and Madalina Bellariu Ion.

Synopsis:
Dobaara: See Your Evil is a story about a mirror believed to be haunted and the contradictory views between a brother and sister dealing with the killing of their parents a decade ago.

Ryan Murphy Teases American Horror Story Season 7 with a Purge-Esque Mask Design

It seems like the teases for the seventh season of “American Horror Story” are about to begin as show creator Ryan Murphy has posted an interesting design on his Instagram account of what appears to be a creepy elephant mask.

Considering that the upcoming season is said to be centered around last year’s election, I’m guessing this is a direct nod to the Republican party, whose mascot is an elephant. Additionally, this mask looks like it would fit right into the Purge franchise. There’s something very sinister and vicious about it.

Confirmed to appear in the upcoming season are Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters.

Final Destination Creator Jeffrey Reddick Announces TV Show The Feed

Hood River Entertainment has announced that they have acquired “The Feed,” a new TV pilot from Stephen Twardokus and Jeffrey Reddick, the latter of whom created the Final Destination franchise. Based on an idea from Roy Crabaugh, according to EW the series will focus on a demon that was created by the negativity and hatred manifested online. This demon will then use technology to torment those it goes after.

Per the site: The plan is for each season to explore a different aspect of American culture, and bring to light characters’ deepest fears, as the demon grows stronger and stronger. In Season 1 the demon infects the smart house of a prominent African-American family and exploits the insidious undercurrent of racism in their community to terrorize them and tear the family apart. Season 2 focuses on a middle-class, Christian family whose beliefs are warped by the demon to turn their town against them. A group of demonologists and computer hackers will team up with survivors of each season to form a resistance intent on stopping the demon before it grows strong enough to infiltrate technology everywhere.

Hood River Entertainment’s Andrew van den Houten states, “As a huge fan of ‘Black Mirror,’ as well as socially conscious horror, I was excited by the uniquely twisted world of ‘The Feed.’ The concept dissects the human condition in a way that we’ve never seen before. I’m thrilled to help bring this project to life.

Reddick adds, “I’m excited to work with Andrew van den Houten because he’s a producer who’s not afraid of peering at the dark underbelly of society. Get Out proved you can scare the hell out of people by examining the darkness that festers just below the surface of life. ‘The Feed’ is a supernatural thriller; but the real world horrors, the scary way people can be manipulated through social media, and the evil that we are capable of inflicting on each other are the themes that I’m really excited about exploring with my co-writer, Stephen Twardokus, and Andrew.

The pilot has yet to be shot but has been written so stay tuned for updates.

Bethesda’s Prey Gets a Haunting Launch Trailer

With Prey now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, Bethesda has released one incredibly haunting launch trailer for its dark sci-fi thriller.

Prey originally entered development all the way back in 2006 as a direct sequel to 2K’s previous game of the same name before a series of delays and cancellations resulted in it becoming an entirely new franchise. It was developed by French studio Arkane, the folks behind the Dishonored franchise, with Raphaël Colantonio directing.

Mick Gordon, who received acclaim for his work on last year’s Doom reboot, provided the game’s score. If you’re a fan of his work, you can purchase the soundtrack on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.

In addition to the launch trailer, Bethesda also released a video featuring a guided tour of the creepy open world Talos I space station where Prey takes place. It actually seemed like quite a peaceful place before it got infested with aliens.

If you want to learn more about the creation of the environments and creatures featured in the game, Dark Horse will be publishing the hardcover book The Art of Prey next month. Prima has also published a beautiful looking collector’s edition guide book.

Prey – Official Details:
Step into your TranStar uniform, and prepare to fight the invasion.

When you awaken aboard the Talos I space station, you find that you are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever – but things have gone terribly wrong. Talos I has been overrun by an alien force, and you must stop the Typhon threat from destroying humanity. As Morgan Yu, and mankind’s last hope, fend off the alien infestation armed with the tools found on the station, your wits, weapons, and mind-bending abilities. It’s up to you to uncover the mysteries of Talos I and safeguard the world from the Typhon threat.

The film stars Bella Thorne, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Cameron Monaghan, Thomas Mann, Taylor Spreitler, Mckenna Grace, and Kurtwood Smith. Daniel Farrands and Casey La Scala co-wrote the script and produce with Jason Blum of hit factory Blumhouse. Franck Khalfoun (Maniac) directs.

Synopsis:
Belle and her family move into a new house, but when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house, Belle begins to suspect her mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.

Meet the Characters in Scream Season 3

We learned back in mid-March that MTV is rebooting its “Scream” series with a fresh storyline and new characters; and today, thanks to TVLine, we have a few more details to share.

Per the site, which previously announced that Brett Matthews (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Supernatural”) will serve as the series’ new showrunner with Queen Latifah, Shakim Conpere, and Yaneley Arty also joining as executive producers for Flavor Unit Entertainment, we can look forward to meeting:

  • Dion, a Michael B. Jordan-esque football player on track to score a college scholarship — that is, until a masked killer uses Dion’s darkest secrets against him, turning his life upside down and making him question his own sanity.
  • Liv, Dion’s cheerleader girlfriend, as beautiful as she is brilliant. She’s also down to lend a helping hand where needed, though her good intentions often land her in hot water.
  • Kym, the rebellious one of the group, always willing to say what everyone else is thinking. She’s organized and protective, two qualities that will serve her well when a killer starts targeting her friends.
  • Beth, who is a little different from her fellow seniors, sporting a Goth look and a morbid collection of interests. A “walking encyclopedia of all things horror,” she’s compared to The Craft‘s Fairuza Balk.
  • Jamal, Dion’s step-brother. Despite hanging out with a rough crowd, he’s got a big heart and an undying loyalty to Dion.

MTV is stressing diverse casting for “Scream’s” third season: Dion and Jamal are both black, while actresses of diverse backgrounds will be considered for the roles of Liv and Kym.

In addition to the new behind-the-scenes team mentioned above, Dimension TV’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein remain executive producers along with Wes Craven, Tony DiSanto, Liz Gateley, Marianne Maddalena, and Cathy Konrad.

Stay tuned for more as it comes on the upcoming six-episode “Scream” Season 3.

Fox Takes The Passage to a New Pilot

Vampires. You cannot knock their staying power, man, especially on TV; and we’re about to see even more of ’em. Grab your crucifix, and sharpen your stakes, kids, as Deadline is reporting that Fox has given a pilot order to “The Passage,” a series based on Justin Cronin’s fantasy book trilogy.

The high-profile project, which previously had a pilot production commitment, hails from Liz Heldens (“Friday Night Lights”), “Felicity” co-creator Matt Reeves, Scott Free, and 20th Century Fox TV.

Written by Heldens, “The Passage” begins as a character-driven government conspiracy thriller and morphs into a post-apocalyptic saga with vampires. The series spans over a century and focuses on a young girl named Amy who must save the human race.

Heldens executive produces alongside Reeves and Adam Kassan via 6th & Idaho and Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker via Scott Free Productions. Cronin is co-producer. 20th TV, where Heldens and Reeves’ 6th & Idaho are under overall deals, is the studio. Clayton Krueger will oversee for Scott Free and Rafi Crohn for 6th & Idaho.

The Passage‘s road to the screen started in 2007 when, in a fierce bidding situation among film studios and top producers, Fox 2000 landed the first book — then half-written — for $1.75 million for Scott Free to produce. Originally developed as a feature, the producers eventually determined that the property would be better served as a TV series. The project migrated to sister studio 20th TV, which, working with Scott Free, attached Heldens because she loved the books and hit it off with the producers.

The Passage trilogy by Cronin includes the best-selling eponymous first book, published in 2010 by Random House’s Ballantine Books, which was followed by The Twelve in 2012 and The City of Mirrors earlier this year.

Trailer recuts are a wonderfully inventive way to take a movie and make it appear like something else entirely. Hell, just a couple of days ago, I posted a recut of What About Bob? that made it look like a psychological stalker thriller!

Now, in anticipation of the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, airing on May 7th, the folks at the network have taken Jordan Peele’s social horror flick Get Out (review) and recut it to make it look like a romantic comedy, with surprisingly good results!

The film is nominated for multiple awards, including Movie of the Year and Best Villain, so be sure to tune in on Sunday and show your support!

When a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation.

It was exactly six years ago when we first heard about 2:22 from director Paul Currie.  At that time the cast was a bit different (Armie Hammer was slated for the lead), but in any event, the film is now heading for a June 30th release courtesy of Magnet Releasing, and we have all the updates – including a trailer and artwork – right here!

Written by Todd Stein and Nathan Parker, 2:22 stars Michiel Huisman, Teresa Palmer, and Sam Reid. The producers include Currie, Steve Hutensky, Jodi Matterson, and Bruce Davey.

Synopsis:

Suspended from his job, Dylan begins to notice the increasingly ominous repetition of sounds and events in his life that happen at exactly the same time every day.

An underlying pattern builds, mysteriously drawing him into Grand Central Station every day at 2:22 pm. As he’s drawn into a complex relationship with a beautiful woman who works in an art gallery, Sarah (Palmer), disturbingly complicated by her ex-boyfriend, Jonas (Reid), Dylan must break the power of the past and take control of time itself.

Our very own Justin Dark, aka “Mr. Dark”, is currently at the Texas Frightmare convention in Dallas where he’s got the inside scoop on new information for Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, the upcoming 13th entry in the franchise. According to Justin, the film has wrapped principal photography and the end goal is to create a film with as much practical FX as possible, utilizing CGI only to remove wires and the like from the puppets.

Justin explains:
They have redesigned all the puppets. Four classic puppets are in the new film: Blade, Tunneller, Torch, and Pinhead. We had one new Puppet revealed: “The Happy Amphibian”. There are other new ones as well [that are] as yet unrevealed.

Basic plot: There’s a convention, these are brought in as WWII memorabilia. They bust loose and start killing people. Thus the action happens at the con and con hotel. It was shot in Dallas at the historic and very haunted Ambassador Hotel. Shooting wrapped two weeks ago.

All FX are practical. CGI [is] only used to remove wires and control rods for the puppets.”

Below are exclusive photos of the updated puppets with creator Charles Band. For more information about The Littlest Reich, check out our post here.

The Amityville: The Awakening Poster Actually Ripped Imagery From The Possession Experiment

$

Movie posters sharing similar concepts and foundations is no surprise. How many times have we seen “badass hero with back towards the viewer overlooking a landscape of destruction”? Or what about “floating heads EVERYWHERE”? If you want more examples, check out this Imgur post, which goes over 15 different over-used movie poster clichés.

While annoying, at least these posters use their own imagery that they acquired for the film in question. It just makes sense to do that as studios don’t want to confuse their viewers. But it looks like the folk behind Amityville: The Awakening didn’t get that memo as the poster they released yesterday doesn’t share a concept with another film, it flat out steals part of it.

Below, I’ve put the posters for Amityville: The Awakening, which supposedly comes out June 30th, and The Possession Experiment, which came out last year, side-by-side. Now, the former has been pushed back multiple times from its September 2014 original release date but that doesn’t change the fact that the image on its poster straight up copy/pasted the possessed girl on the poster for the latter. The hair lines are the same as is the angle and…everything, okay?! There’s no denying it, no matter what anyone says.

Even The Possession Experiment production manager Desiree Connell chimed in on our comments, pointing out the identical imagery. Addressing the fact that Amityville: The Awakening was shot before The Possession Experiment, Connell states, “This is literally [exact] imagery from our film.” And she isn’t wrong. Movie A can be shot years after Movie B, which was shelved for any number of reasons. Then, when Movie B gets a release date and begins marketing, it doesn’t have a right to Movie A’s imagery just because it was shot first. That’s not how it works and it certainly isn’t right.

I do my best to remain as unbiased as possible. However, there’s no point in being unbiased here. This is 100% clear and it’s shameful. I hope that Amityville: The Awakening addresses this and makes it right.
