Say What?! Mike Mignola Says There WILL Be Another Hellboy Movie!

In what may be the most shocking thing I’ve read this year, comic artist/writer Mike Mignola has just announced that there will be another Hellboy movie! On top of that, he reveals that it will be rated R and will be directed by The Descent‘s Neil Marshall. Furthermore, he states that David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) will be playing the titular character! Per THR, Millennium is in negotiations with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin for a new installment that would reboot and relaunch the property.

The film currently has a working title of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and it is being written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Mignola himself.

This is especially surprising because a third film has been a wish for many fans of the series since 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Alas, earlier this year director Guillermo del Toro stated, “Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke [with] all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it.

Now, this announcement from Mignola doesn’t state whether or not the film will be live-action. There have been two animated Hellboy films, so that’s always a possibility. However, no matter what comes from this, it’s incredibly exciting to hear that the idea of bringing Hellboy back to the world of cinema hasn’t left Mignola’s mind!

What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below!

The Trailer for A24’s Woodshock is an Emotional Descent into Drug-Fueled Grief

Yesterday brought the poster for A24’s upcoming surreal fantasy drama Woodshock and today brings you a trailer, which can be seen below. The footage reveals that Kirsten Dunst is a young woman who, if I’m right here, helps her ailing mother to commit suicide via a psychotropic, hallucinatory drug. Caught in the grief and guilt of the aftermath, Dunst then proceeds to go down a path of drug use herself, resulting in her wavering between reality and whatever dream-world her “high” takes her to.

Directed by Kate Mulleavy and Laura Mulleavy, Woodshock stars Kirsten Dunst, Pilou Asbæk, Joe Cole, Lorelei Linklater, and Steph DuVall. It comes to theaters on September 12th.

Synopsis:
Theresa is a haunted young woman spiraling in the wake of profound loss, torn between her fractured emotional state and the reality-altering effects of a potent cannabinoid drug

Japan Gets Spooky Again in Yomawari: Midnight Shadows

Released last year on PC and PS Vita, Yomawari: Night Alone was both a moderate critical and financial hit, selling over 48,000 copies in Japan and scoring a strong 75% on Metacritic. Publisher Nippon Ichi Software have now announced a sequel to the creepy anime-style horror game, which will go by the name Midnight Shadows. Like its predecessor, it looks like another incredibly spooky journey into a Japanese night filled with vengeful ghosts and other things that dwell in the darkness.

I’m guessing none of you will be buying the Vita version of Midnight Shadows, as the systems been on life support sinnce its release back in 2011. So instead look for it on PS4 and Steam later this year. There’s no trailer yet, although Nippon Ichi’s US division debuted some screenshots. Seeing those cutesy character designs against such creepy looking backdrops is a sight that’s never gonna get old.

Synopsis:
The follow-up to 2016’s cult horror hit Yomawari: Night Alone, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows introduces two brand-new girls, Yui and Haru, to the night and the spirits who haunt it. Separated by a mysterious attacker, each girl will explore haunting and bizarre locations, face the terrors of the night, and test their courage and wits to survive and reconnect with one another.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases: May 9, 2017

Greetings, and welcome once again to this week’s Blu-ray and DVD release list. Going back through my records, I realize that my first release list while working for Dread Central was published on May 12, 2015.

That means this is essentially my two-year anniversary of working with these wonderful folks. I plan on celebrating with a cupcake after lunch at my nine to five.

Anyhow, back to the task at hand. There are 22 titles to be on the lookout for this week. Here Alone, an apocalyptic viral outbreak film, will not be available until May 12th. Aside from that, everything else should be on schedule this week.

One of my favorite titles this week, despite not actually having seen the movie itself, is The Greasy Strangler. I must admit that my inner juvenile couldn’t help but look this up on Urban Dictionary just to see if it was something humorous. It was, but I will let you investigate that for yourself. It is fitting, though, as this movie has been compared to the works of John Waters due to its relatively off-the-wall content.

Speaking of John Waters, a movie of his that falls just a couple of years shy of being considered a classic, Serial Mom, will be released as a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray this week. This dark comedy, directed by a legend in the industry, is on the top of my list of releases to pick up this week for my personal collection.

Slightly older than Serial Mom, our one classic release this week comes in the form of a 2-disc Special Edition of 1988’s Brain Damage on Blu-ray and DVD. From the mind that brought us Basket Case 1-3 and Frankenhooker comes this long-awaited hi-def transfer. Since Arrow Video is involved, you can be guaranteed a bunch of awesome extras as well.

For those who appreciate the beauty of old-school, practical special effects, try to check out The Void. In the beginning of April, this movie did surprisingly well during its limited theater release. Pick up the DVD and see for yourself what caused the word-of-mouth sensation that resulted in sold-out crowds across the country.

Keep reading below, and we will see you again next week, friends. Dracula will be making appearance along with The Mummy and The Wolf Man (among other werewolves), so you won’t want to miss it. As always, pleasant viewing.

Injecting Aluminum (2017)

Starring:

Dr. Romain Gherardi, Dr. Jerome Authier, Professor Christopher Exley, Michel Rivasi, Didier Lambert

Synopsis:

In the 1990 s, a mysterious muscular disease with symptoms that included severe muscle and joint pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, and fever began to surface among multiple patients in France. A team of doctors and researchers who were tasked with their care relentlessly studied the patients, searching for anything that could be causing this troubling condition. In 1993, they identified this new disease as macrophagic myofascitis syndrome, or MMS, and finally found proof that condition occurs when the aluminum hydroxide adjuvant from a vaccine remains embedded in the body tissue and causes an immune reaction. Since the 1920 s, aluminum, the most common adjuvant used in most childhood and adult vaccines, has been used to optimize the body’s immune response to the injected disease. Although it is used to make vaccines more efficient, aluminum is now known to be neurotoxic and the root cause of many serious illnesses. What the pharmaceutical companies don t admit is that aluminum did not go through rigorous testing before being approved as a vaccine adjuvant. It was only tested for 28 days, on two rabbits, the remains of which have mysteriously disappeared. Injecting Aluminum features interviews with patients, doctors, scientists, and influential politicians who are speaking out for the very first time about the dangers of aluminum in vaccines. This groundbreaking documentary calls in to question the public health policies around vaccine ingredients and safety testing, expanding the discussion beyond mercury, and the failure of health agencies globally to respond to the known neurotoxic effects of this powerful vaccine ingredient on the human body.

Exclusive: The Cast and Crew of The Lodgers on Bringing Horror to 1920’s Ireland

$

0

The last we wrote about Let Us Prey director Brian O’Malley’s The Lodgers, it was to notify everyone that it had begun filming in Ireland, much of the production taking place in Loftus Hall, reputedly one of the country’s most haunted locations. Since then, there hasn’t been any information about the period gothic horror film. That’s going to change as I had the chance to speak with O’Malley, producers Ruth Treacy and Julianne Ford and stars Charlotte Vega and David Bradley about how they came aboard the supernatural gothic horror/drama and what filming was like. You can read everything below as well as get a first look at six exclusive images.

Synopsis:
The story follows a sister and brother haunted by a secret curse that forces them to remain in the large estate home left to them by their dead parents. But when a young man who falls in love with the sister tries to free her, his attempt sets off a deadly chain reaction.

Epic Pictures Group’s gothic horror story was scripted by David Turpin and stars Charlotte Vega, Bill Millner, David Bradley (“The Strain”),  Eugene Simon (“Game of Thrones”), and Moe Dunford.

For Charlotte Vega, who plays the lead character Rachel, joining the cast of The Lodgers was a very welcome surprise. “I thought it was really, really beautiful from the start and there was something so special about the character that I really liked, but I just didn’t think they would see me as the part physically,” she told me. Producer Julianne Ford touched on this, saying that for their original vision of Rachel, “…we were thinking black hair, pale skin, typical goth style.” However, they soon realized that they had their Rachel, with Ford adding, “…she’s just so watchable and engaging so quite early on in the process, Brian and myself and [casting director] Manuel [Puro], identified that she was the strongest and so we cast her first.

Choosing Vega wasn’t a simple process. For one, she lives in Spain and submitted her first audition as a tape. Producer Ruth Treacy explains that Puro brought, “…hundreds of different girls through self-tapes. We saw Charlotte quite early on and I remember at the time saying, she’s really got something, I think we should look at her.” From there, they had to find the right Edward to play as her twin brother. Treacy adds, “Bill Millner hadn’t auditioned but then decided he would and he was there with Charlotte and the chemistry was great. When we saw the tape of the two of them, we said, ‘Oh my god, it has to be Bill.’

Vega explains that what drew her into the story was the character of Rachel herself. “I don’t think there are that many strong female leads around as there should be, especially for young woman. When you’re kind of in your twenties, there’s not many roles like that and when I read the script, there was just something so captivating about her, about her struggle throughout the film. She’s so passionate and so brave and she’s real,” she says. She elaborates, “…the whole film is partly about her being torn between her brother and the life she’s always known and freedom. So she risks everything, really for a chance at that and that’s what I thought was so amazing about her.” After seeing her performance, Ford adamantly states, “We’re convinced that Charlotte is going to be a star,” a sentiment shared by “The Strain” actor David Bradley, who said, “I thought the young actors, Charlotte and Bill [Milner] and the others, were utterly terrific. They just had that eerie, otherworldly quality.”

As mentioned previously, much of the film was shot at Loftus Hall, a residence that is supposedly haunted by the Devil. While no one experienced any strange or supernatural events, they all spoke glowingly of the atmosphere and tone that it helped create. Bradley explained, “It was just such a wonderful location because in terms of acting, if you’re in a place like that, half of the work is done for you, you know what I mean? You’re already surrounded by the most amazing atmosphere.” Treacy also spoke about the house, which she described as “perfect”. “As soon as we saw it we knew it was the ideal location because it’s such a character itself,” she states while Ford joked, “…our production designer will kill me for saying that, but a lot of production values came from the house itself.” O’Malley joins in and talks about the “hugely positive energy” that he felt during the shoot, saying, “…that the house was presenting me with this magnificent palette.”

When I asked O’Malley to describe The Lodgers, he started laughing and said, “Oh man, this is the dilemma…Can we come back to that one?” About 15 minutes later, in the middle of answering a different question, he let unknowingly offered the best response, telling me, “I set out to make an elegant, beautiful, delicate ghost story.” It’s the kind of movie that everyone I spoke with compared to films like The Others, The Orphanage, Pan’s Labyrinth, and similar other titles. At the end of the day, David Bradley summed up The Lodgers with the confident statement, “…[it] will have a strange, compelling magic about it.

Prepare to Enter Harsh Reality, a Brand New Cyberpunk Thriller

Are you the type who plays too much video games, is always on the computer and doesn’t get outside very much?  Do you like the type of science fiction that Philip K. Dick and Paul Verhoeven unleashed back in the day?  If so, you’ll be pleased to know that I’ve just discovered the next promising short film for people like us.

Prepare to step into a neon-drenched future dystopia with Harsh Reality, relive the glory days of edgy sci-fi action with a message about our relationship with technology, and bask in the synthy goodness.  The film tells the story of a professional gamer who’s kidnapped and subjected to a mind-altering VR program.   And who knows? With the way technology is evolving, that will probably happen someday.  So let’s enjoy our freedom while we can, but in the meantime, we can support Harsh Reality and enjoy that too.

The film is directed by Iain Marcks (American Cinematographer Magazine), whose films have previously appeared on Fandor and ShortsTV.  Starring will be comedian and pro gamer Jeff Seal, Chris Manley (Cirque du Soleil), and Shaina Feinberg (This American Life).  Joe Yanick, of the excellent noisemakers Syndromeswill serve as a Producer while, Antoni Maiovvi, the co-founder of the sublime Giallo Disco Records, will bring the glorious synths.  Capping off the team is Assistant Director, Heather Buckley (We Are Still Here) and Director of Photography, Eduardo Mayen (El Rey’s “From Dusk Till Dawn”).

For updates check out the Energeia Films Facebook page, and if you’d like to support the campaign then head on over to Indiegogo and check out the perks.

Synopsis:
HARSH REALITY is set in Central City, a teeming metropolis that was on the verge of bankruptcy until a cartel of banks and multinational conglomerates stepped in to take control of its sagging infrastructure. Known as the Central Provisional Authority Corporation, they’ve created a utilities monopoly, replaced the police with a private security force, shuttered the public University, and begun mass deportations. Meanwhile, the citizens of Central City have begun to organize and resist the hostile takeover.

This is not a future that will be, but one that might be.

Our influences range from RoboCop, The Twilight Zone, and Max Headroom, to the work of Philip K. Dick, Douglas Rushkoff, and Harlan Ellison — but HARSH REALITY is part of a larger original narrative that includes two feature films, one of which — ZERO SUM — has already been written and is in development, to be followed by THE TRANSIT OF VENUS.

Let’s Talk About This Hellboy Reboot

$

Yesterday brought the stunning news that Mike Mignola’s Hellboy is receiving a reboot with The Descent director Neil Marshall helming the film and “Stranger Things” star David Harbour as the titular character. The news sent shockwaves through the film community, many of whom have been begging for Hellboy 3 with Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman, the duo behind the first two entries. Alas, that train left the station a while ago…

So what does this mean? How should we approach this news? Like with all things, it’s best to come at it from a bird’s eye perspective, to see things from above and not make rash decisions. For many, this news is a bitter disappointment. For others, it’s a fresh start, a chance to see this world come to life anew.

For me, I’m caught in the middle, both upset and joyous. So let me share with you what’s going through my head in the hopes that we can all open a discussion.

The Cons:

Let’s get the sad stuff out of the way first, okay? As a fan of Guillermo del Toro and his films, this is heartbreaking. When del Toro becomes attached to a project, it’s obvious that he puts his heart and soul into bringing it to life. He’s not just a filmmaker, he’s a fan, which is what makes his movies so endearing and exciting. He doesn’t create them from solely the perspective of a director, he creates them with a foot firmly planted in the perspective of the audience and how they will ultimately see the film. When he takes on a project, he knows that the magic of filmmaking and the magic of seeing a film are two radically different beasts. But his strong point is that he knows how to tame each of them, resulting in films that are wonderfully orchestrated while also being a delight to take in.

When del Toro brought us his visions of Hellboy, it was clear that he had a vision, a overarching story that couldn’t be encompassed in one film. Following the arc of Hellboy alone is a magnificent journey. In the first film, he suffers the loss of his father and attempts to win back the heart of Selma Blair’s Liz Sherman. He has to learn how to be a leader while also facing the greatest threat that’s crossed his path. In the second film, Hellboy is struggling with his newfound responsibilities and his want to be accepted by the world he lives in but has to hide from. Furthermore, his relationship with Liz is on rocky ground as she herself hides the fact that she’s pregnant.

For two films that follow a demonic entity that fights for the forces of good, there are a wide array of human elements and emotions that make them immediate and relatable. We all know grief. We all know the feeling of wanting to be accepted. We all know heartbreak. These are universal themes and del Toro proved that they transcend our world and are present even for the denizens of Hell. For many, that thought was hugely comforting.

Sadly, we won’t get to know what transformations Hellboy and the rest of the B.P.R.D. will go through. We won’t see the arc culminate for Hellboy, which is sad because Hellboy II: the Golden Army teased and tantalized audiences during the Angel of Death sequence, where Liz is told after choosing to help Hellboy live even in the face of a dire warning, “…the time will come when you, my dear, will suffer more than anyone.

The knowledge of her pregnancy and that she is in love with a demonic creature, no matter how good he might be (after all, he almost succumbed to evil in the first film), raises all sorts of questions and concerns. What does the Angel of Death mean? What tragedies await Liz and, by extension, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. in the future? What will happen to their children? These questions, and more, will never get answered. That is what stings the most. It’s like reading a book that draws you into its world and enchants you with its story and characters only for you to find out that the last chapter has been torn out.

It should also be noted that Ron Perlman wasn’t a man in a costume. He was Hellboy. He took that role and embodied it with perfection, just as Doug Jones as Abe Sapien was charming and funny. Seeing others in those roles won’t be easy, that’s for sure.

The world created by Guillermo del Toro is nothing short of wondrous. It felt alive, it felt real, and it felt like magic and wonder was a part of our world, hiding just beyond our sight, lurking past the reach of our fingertips. It was a fairy tale for adults, plain and simple.

I’m not saying that everything I’ve written about will be absent from Marshall’s offering. I’m just saying that a reboot means del Toro’s story will go unfinished. And that’s a heartbreaking reality.

The Pros:

For as sad as I am that del Toro and Perlman won’t be back for Hellboy 3, I am thrilled that we’re getting another Hellboy movie. The tales of the B.P.R.D. are exciting and lend themselves to wondrous opportunities, which could make for some truly entertaining films. Plus, while I love del Toro’s world and will miss it tremendously, the universe Mike Mignola has expanded upon since Hellboy’s premiere in 1993 is rich and varied. There’s a lot to pull from, so there’s no reason to expect that we won’t get eye candy galore.

David Harbour is a brilliant actor, let’s just make that clear. His work as Sheriff Hopper in “Stranger Things” is nuanced, exciting, and engaging. He quickly, and deservedly, became a fan favorite; and there’s no denying that he has the right build for the part. By all indications, he’s going to make a great Hellboy.

The R rating is also an interesting and rather specific mention. There’s no denying that Mignola’s Hellboy series can become quite violent, but there’s always a cheeky surreal humor about it (case in point). I’m not so much skeptical here as I am curious. Besides, all of Marshall’s films have been rated R, so the man clearly knows how to work within that rating.

Speaking of Marshall, he’s shown his ability across a wide variety of subgenres within horror. The Descent was a suspenseful creature slasher while Dog Soldiers was a black horror/comedy that featured practically made werewolves. Doomsday was an exciting mishmash that blended, well… damn near everything! Its scope was massive and Marshall made it totally believable. And while that movie may have taken us into the future, Centurion took us WAY into the past. These examples don’t even touch upon his work in television on shows like “Hannibal,” “Westworld,” “Constantine,” or “Game of Thrones.”

Marshall has the ability to bring any world he’s offered to life, that cannot be denied. So knowing that he’s going to be behind Hellboy is not something to be concerned with. Quite the opposite in fact. I would be hard-pressed to think of another director who appears to be as qualified as Marshall.

All I want is for this film to be good. Yes, I’m going to have to live with my disappointment, but I now have a reason to be excited. For those who wish to live in the former, I don’t begrudge you that. I mourn with you. But I also understand those that fall into the latter group because this just means more Hellboy, which is always a good time.

Until we start seeing actual footage, I recommend we all wait before passing judgment. Oh, and definitely use this time to read the comics and stories. Why not get caught up with the B.P.R.D. before the movie comes out?

Welcome back to another edition of Eyegasm, our weekly look at the best and worst examples of home video cover art. What pressed our happy buttons and bored us to tears? Read on to find out!

BEST:

Cannibal Messiah
Distributed by Srs Cinema

Here we have a perfect example of retro done right. Back in the day I used to rent horror movies on the strength of the box art alone. The artwork for Cannibal Messiah is DEFINITELY one that would have gone home with me and my friends for an evening of gut-munching mayhem. This sliver of eye candy has personality to spare! We like! We really like!

Cannibal Messiah

WORST:

Justice Served
Distributed by Breaking Glass Pictures

So here we have a dude in a chair with a hood over his head. Yep, a dude in a chair with a hood over his head. This is supposed to conjure wondrous thoughts of Shocker? Or Prison? Or any other bits of artwork that featured a dude in a chair, only done far better? There’s zero about this artwork that works. It’s dull, lifeless, and is about as eye-catching as a grain of white rice on a paper plate in a blizzard.

Are you ready for Takashi Miike to get even gorier? That’s what Emperor Motion Picture’s May Yip, who is their head of international sales, tells Variety about their newly announced upcoming Ichi the Killer restoration.

Talking to the site, Yip explains, “Miike is prolific, but ‘Ichi the Killer’ stands out as something special. Unfortunately, the materials were in very poor condition as it was shot in Beta and only later converted to 35mm. So, given that there was enduring interest and licenses expiring, we took the decision to restore it. The result will be better, even gorier.”

Ichi the Killer came out in 2001 and was based on Hideo Yamamoto manga series. As of 2009, the film has been banned in Norway, Malaysia, and Germany due to its graphic depictions of violence and sadism.

Get out your calendars, kids! FX has announced an official premiere date for the fourth season of “The Strain,” which will be its last.  Look for it on Sunday, July 16th, at 10:00 PM (check your local listings.)

In “The Strain” the very survival of humanity at stake.  The takeover continues this summer. Donate today…

Get fired up because Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, and Chuck Hogan are bringing the vampire thriller to its climatic conclusion.

“It is a true joy to work at FX, where creative intentions always comes first,” Cuse said when the final season announcement was made. “Our original plan was for the series to last three years. Once we began telling that story, it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on Season 3, Guillermo, Chuck, and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic Season 4. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”

Based off of the best-selling The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the series hails from showrunner/executive producer/director/writer Carlton Cuse along with co-creators/executive producers/writers del Toro and Hogan. Gary Ungar, J. Miles Dale, Bradley Thompson, and David Weddle also serve as executive producers. “The Strain” is produced by FX Productions and stars Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Ruta Gedmintas, Rupert Penry-Jones, and Max Charles.

Original A Nightmare on Elm Street Poster Artist Turns His Carved Eyes to Halloween

When I think of amazing horror posters, one of my go-to examples is always going to be the A Nightmare on Elm Street series and the artwork of Matthew Peak. His work on the first five films of that franchise is nothing short of majestic, proving that poster artwork can transcend clichés and elevate itself to high art.

While that may sound hyperbolic, I’m serious in my belief. Peak’s artwork is the kind of stuff that you’d hang on your wall, and it’d be more than just “another movie poster.” It’d be something to look at, marvel over, and appreciate for its technique and mastery of color. Plus, those posters have Freddy on them, so…

With five A Nightmare on Elm Street posters under his belt, Peak has turned to a different franchise, one that began six years prior: Halloween. That’s right… Matthew Peak has created his own take on the classic John Carpenter slasher, crafting a poster that exudes not only the atmosphere of the film but also the joy of the titular holiday. It’s dark and spooky, and the jack o’ lantern is delightfully orange.

Unfortunately, both variants, which were on sale through Bottleneck Gallery, have already sold out. However, they’re still worth taking a look at, which you can do below.
