Universal Pictures has announced that they are hereby dubbing May 20th “The Mummy Day” and they plan to celebrate it by unveiling a 75-foot tall, 7-ton sarcophagus that will be placed at the Hollywood & Highland Center, which houses the world famous TCL Chinese Theater, according to Deadline. In attendance will be stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, and Jake Johnson along with director Alex Kurtzman.

Kurtzman explains, “The Mummy has been such a labor of love for the hundreds of cast and crew who have worked for the past few years preparing its big-screen launch. When we built Princess Ahmanet’s sarcophagus for production, we had no idea that a 15,000-pound replica of her ‘eternal’ resting place would one day find its home at the intersection of Hollywood & Highland. I can’t wait to celebrate her story with the fans on May 20.

Simpson”), Oscar winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator), and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond) as the titular character.

What happens when your sibling is mysteriously murdered, and after you weed through the unending pain, you begin to focus on revenge? Revenge only made more sweet by knowing the identity of their assailant…

That’s the question that will be answered in the new film The Trap from director Mark Pellington (The Mothman Prophecies, Arlington Road).

According to Deadline, TriStar has attached Pellington to direct the adaptation of the Melanie Raabe novel that Oscar-nominated Carol screenwriter Phyllis Nagy is adapting. The Cantillon Company’s Elizabeth Cantillon and Immersive Pictures’ Josh Bratman are producing.

The novel, originally published in German as Die Falle, is a twisted thriller about a reclusive author who sets the perfect trap for her sister’s murderer after she becomes convinced she has seen the killer on TV.

Meet the Serial Killer Next Door in Summer of ’84 from Turbo Kid Directors

Gunpowder & Sky, the global content studio, announced today that it has partnered with Brightlight Pictures (White Noise, 50/50, Colossal) to produce Summer of ‘84, a horror-thriller film set in the early 1980s when times started to change and the death of the suburban dream began.

Featured on the 2016 Blood List, a list of the best screenplays in the “dark” genres (horror, thriller, dark comedy, and science fiction) as voted on by industry professionals, Summer of ‘84 follows a group of kids but is certainly not a kids’ movie. Co-produced and written by Matt Leslie along with writing partner Stephen J. Smith and directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell of RKSS (Turbo Kid), the film explores the idea that every serial killer lives next door to someone. That chilling possibility is invigorating to 15-year-old Davey Armstrong, who spends his summer investigating his police officer neighbor, Mr. Mackey, convinced he is the local serial killer all over the news.

“How could we not bet on a writer associated with Straight Outta Compton and the directors of Turbo Kid to tell a twisted tale about a peaceful community where a serial killer threatens to shatter the suburban dream?” said Van Toffler, CEO and co-founder of Gunpowder & Sky. “It’s a bold, unexpected story told by breakthrough filmmakers, and it’s exactly the kind of novel film we want to make at Gunpowder & Sky.”

“Summer of ‘84 taps into the curiosity we all had as kids about what goes on behind closed doors,” said co-writer Smith.

Co-producer and co-writer Leslie added, “While writing, we tried to evoke the feeling of a genuine 80s film – but give it a contemporary twist. We hope audiences find Summer of ‘84 dangerous and haunting, as well as nostalgic and sincere.”

Added RKSS (Roadkill Superstar): “We were passionate about Summer of ’84 since the very first pitch. Our team fell in love with the script and felt like it was written just for us. There was no doubt in our mind that we needed to get attached to this amazing project and work with the talented writers who imagined it all.”

“Everyone at Brightlight Pictures is ecstatic to be working with the brilliant team at Gunpowder & Sky to bring Matt and Stephen’s bold and thrilling script to life,” said Shawn Williamson, CEO of Brightlight Pictures, who is producing with Jameson Parker. “As soon as I read the script, I knew Brightlight had to be a part of this film, and who better to direct it than the masterminds behind Turbo Kid – Roadkill Superstar!”

Summer of ‘84 is set to go into production this July for an end of year release date. Cody Zwieg (The Lazarus Effect, The Hills Have Eyes) will oversee production for Gunpowder & Sky.

Synopsis:
Growing up on a quiet cul-de-sac in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Davey’s desperate to believe there’s more to life than what he sees from his bedroom window. For him, every tabloid cover is a peek into the world as it really is, as it really must be past the borders of the humdrum neighborhood where he and his best friends Eats, Farraday. and Woody have grown up. Sure they spend their summers playing nighttime flashlight tag (“Manhunt”), riding their BMX bikes all over town, and spying on the hot, sometimes topless chick next door, Nikki… but Davey thirsts for more. As their investigation heats up, Davey and his best buds soon discover Mr. Mackey is on to them, and their suspicions quickly become all too real.

Henry Duo Michael Rooker and John McNaughton Reteam for A Good Man is Hard to Find

John McNaughton’s 1986 film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which was loosely based of the exploits on real life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole, was an unflinching and terrifying look at just how evil we as people can be. After many decades its star Michael Rooker and McNaughton are re-teaming for the tale of another psychopath.

Deadline reports that the duo has come together for a film adaptation of Flannery O’Connor’s 1955 short story, A Good Man Is Hard To Find. The Passion Of The Christ scribe Benedict Fitzgerald wrote the screenplay.

The O’Conner story, a duel between The Grandmother and an escaped convict known as The Misfit has long been the subject of many essays and is revered as a literary classic. Given the subject matter of a planned vacation gone completely awry and the chops of both McNaughton and Rooker this may very well turn into a filmic classic as well.

Ed Richardson is producing A Good Man Is Hard To Find under his Atlanta-based R&R Productions Worldwide, along with David Zander, and Mike Sears.

TV Movie Musical Zombies on its Way to Disney Channel

0

Sure, it’s likely to fall on the “horror lite” side of the fence, but if you have kids you’d like to introduce to the genre (or are just a kid at heart yourself), we thought you might be interested in Zombies, a new TV movie musical that just kicked off production for Disney Channel.

Per TV Guide, the film features teen zombies from Zombietown who join the human classmates of Seabrook High School and set into motion an unexpected romance between a human cheerleader named Addison (“American Housewife’s” Meg Donnelly, pictured below) and a zombie football star named Zed (“Ghost Whisperer’s” Milo Manheim).

The story will revolve around the attempts to integrate these undead kids into the norms of Seabrook’s live scene, with human friends Bucky (Trevor Tordjman) and Bree (Carla Jeffery) mixing factions with zombie pals like Eliza (Kylee Russell).

David Light and Joseph Raso co-wrote the script with The Duff’s Josh Cagan, and the film will be directed by Jeffrey Hornaday with choreography by Hornaday’s Teen Beach Movie collaborator, Christopher Scott. Effie Brown will serve as co-executive producer alongside Hornaday.

Adam Bonnett, executive vice president of Original Programming at Disney Channels Worldwide, said of the film, “We’re thrilled to be working with Jeffrey Hornaday again to bring this new world of zombies and cheerleading to life. Jeffrey and Chris Scott have delivered some of our most memorable musical sequences on Disney Channel; and now with Effie Brown on board as an executive producer, we are excited to deliver this inspirational story about tolerance, inclusion, individuality, and conviction – each relatable themes for our viewers.”

Zombies is expected to premiere in 2018.

Psychological Thriller Jasmine Gets Limited Theatrical Release Dates With VOD/DVD to Follow

The psychological thriller Jasmine has been confirmed to open in limited theaters on June 16th in New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Philadelphia. It will then come to VOD platforms as well as DVD on July 19th.

I previously wrote:

A murder mystery/thriller, Jasmine looks like it will take viewers on a wild ride of intrigue, suspense, and a seedy underworld that society would rather hide. There’s a sexiness to the locations as well as a sense of continuous danger. It’s been a while since I’ve been interested in checking out a solid Asian thriller but perhaps Jasmine could spark that up again.

Jasmine stars Jason Tobin, Byron Mann, Eugenia Yuan, Glen Chin, and Sarah Lian. It was directed by Dax Phelan.

Synopsis:
One year after his wife’s murder, Leonard (Jason Tobin), a successful Hong Kong businessman, becomes obsessed with a mysterious stranger he thinks killed his wife. Now he travels the world trying to find this stranger and people keep dying everywhere he goes.

Help Swords of the Swashbucklers Reach its Third Stretch Goal For New Issues!

Between the years of 1984 and 1987, Marvel publshed the pirate adventure comic series Swords of the Swashbucklers, which was created by Bill Mantlo and Jackson “Butch” Guice. The series has been out of print for over 25 years and Dynamite Entertainment decided that this was an unforgivable situation.

That’s why they turned to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to create a remastered trade paperback. Asking for less than $10,000, the crowdfund is, as of this post going live, just under $42,000. This has enabled the team to create two stretch goals. The first guaranteed that everyone at or above a certain tier would also get throwback collectible stickers. The second gives the same tiers temporary tattoos as well.

If the campaign reaches $50,000, Dynamite Entertainment will enact their third stretch goal, which is far more ambitious and exciting for those who love the series. Working with the Mantlo family and Guice, they will create new comics for the series!

If you want to see this happen, all you have to do is click on the above link and pledge your support!

Synopsis:
In Swords of the Swashbucklers, spirited teenager Domino Blackthorne Drake was just a normal girl… until she stumbled upon an alien artifact, acquired uncanny power, and became a beacon for intergalactic trouble! With her tabby cat Cap’n Kidd in tow, Domino joins the motley crew of the Starshadow – a spacefaring pirate ship captained by the charismatic and fearless Raader. Domino embarks on a cosmic odyssey to save her kidnapped parents and overthrow the evil Colonizer Empire.

Snag Some Limited Edition Merch to Celebrate Hatchet’s 10th Anniversary!

This Fall, Adam Green’s slasher Hatchet will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its wide release. The film introduced horror audiences to Victor Crowley, who was played by Kane Hodder, the deformed being who seemingly cannot be killed (although he is GREAT at hocking up a blood loogey). Since then, two sequels have been released, one in 2010 and one in 2013. And while we definitely deserve more titles in this franchise, we should still be happy with the gruesome carnage the series has already offered us.

To celebrate the upcoming decennial, ArieScope has released a line of limited merch that bears brand new custom Hatchet artwork from artist Ralf Krause. Being offered is a t-shirt, 3/4 baseball style shirt, a hoodie, and a print. These items are currently available for pre-order through ArieScope and they will begin shipping in early June. You can see the artwork below.

New In Flames Music Video Takes Owlman Into the Cosmos

Swedish melodic death metal band (although I’m not sure this song qualifies in that genre) have released a music video for their track “Here Until Forever”, which comes from their latest album Battles. The video uses stop motion animation to tell the story of an Owlman (who looks rather similar to the Lord of Tears chap) who desperately seeks a way to meet and spend time with a lovely looking cosmic goth lady, only to be thwarted by the sun. Doomed to relive this day over and over, we can only watch his desperation. Oh, and there’s a wall of eyeballs. Just throwing that out there.

The video was directed and animated by Mexican stop motion artist Luis Téllez.

Puppet Master III Director David DeCoteau Uncovers The Swamp Freak

I love me some swamp monster movies, so the fact that Swamp Freak has landed on Vimeo and Amazon Video means I’m in happy hour.

Swamp Freak was directed by Puppet Master III’s David DeCoteau, and stars Lesleh Donaldson, Helene Udy, Felissa Rose, Alex Caithness and Dylan Norberg. The trailer gives us a pretty clear look at the titular swamp freak, and even though it does just look like a guy in a ghillie suit, I still want to see this film.

Synopsis:

Whether you want a snapshot of where modern literary horror fiction is headed or just want to satisfy a craving for cruel carnage only the best horror writing can satisfy, pick up Horror Library, Volume 6, edited by Eric J. Guignard, available now from Cutting Block Books.

From acclaimed favorites like Bentley Little and Jeffrey Ford to exciting new voices on the horror scene, a diverse range of writers contribute to this compilation of short fiction. Compelling narratives range from gory and grotesque to the more subtle and psychologically thrilling.

Guignard, a winner of horror writing’s highest honor, the Bram Stoker Award, edited the anthology (itself a Bram Stoker Award-nominated series) for the first time, and Cutting Block Books is excited to have fresh blood invigorate the curation of stories selected for inclusion.

In that, I hope I’ve succeeded.”

Silent Horror Films Whispering Shadows and The Devil’s Assistant Finally Coming DVD

As a dedicated cinephile, it warms my heart to know that two classics of the silent era are finally coming to DVD. 1917’s The Devil’s Assistant and 1921’s Whispering Shadows will both be released for the first time on DVD with new scores created by composer Andrew E. Simpson. Support his campaign to restore the two films here.

The Devil’s Assistant was directed by Harry A. Pollard and tells the story of a jealous man who takes revenge on the woman who left him for someone else. The film notably includes a scene in Hell depicting a winged demon stirring a cauldron, as pictured below.

Whispering Shadows was directed by Emile Chautard and deals with the occult and messages from beyond the grave, with a young woman receiving messages from her deceased father to help her clear the name of her finance, who has been wrongly accused of embezzlement.

Both the films are largely unknown are rarely talked about these days, so it’s about time they were given their dues before they were lost forever.

Wanna See Something REALLY Scary? Demonic Baby Laugh-A-Lot

Wanna see something REALLY scary?

To horror fans who came of age in the 1980s, the line above instantly invokes memories of Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks from the intro to Twilight Zone: The Movie: A nighttime road trip takes a nasty turn when a seemingly innocuous question leads to major terror. Now, on a bi-monthly basis, I’ll be asking, “Wanna see something REALLY scary?” with the goal of shocking you with chilling footage plumbed from the darkest corners of YouTube.

In the early 1970s, a bizarre talking doll caused masses of young girls to fall into uncontrollable fits of maniacal laughter. This isn’t the logline for the next Annabelle film, this is the very real case of Baby Laugh-A-Lot, a toy from Remco that took the country by storm. The idea of a laughing doll may seem cute and sweet as candy, but Baby Laugh-A-Lot had a cackle that wouldn’t be out of place in a haunted funhouse.

In the vintage commercial below, a series of tweens seem, at first, stunned by Baby’s irrepressible laughter, but they soon fall into similar states of unabashed hysteria. Then, Baby’s laughter combines with multiple exclamations of chaotic merriment until even the spokesperson, a grown man, finds himself enrapt by the same overpowering urge to giggle like a lunatic—like the victim of some medieval disease or warlock’s incantation. And what the hell is so funny in the first place? Have a look:

Baby Laugh-A-Lot has become something of a cult phenomenon; a throwback to the psychedelic 1970s and an example of something so unintentionally creepy it’s ridiculous. If you’re lucky enough to find one on Etsy or EBay, it’ll likely set you back at least a couple hundred dollars, depending on the doll’s condition. Now, wanna see something REALLY scary? Check out what Baby Laugh-A-Lot sounds like when her batteries run low. Is that you, Chucky?

Got an idea for a future installment of “Wanna See Something REALLY Scary?” Hit me up on Twitter @josh_millican!
