Atari’s Centipede Burrowing into Comic Stores

$

Although they’ve been on life-support for the last few years, Atari were once one of the biggest and most relevant video game publisher sin the world. Yup, the publisher who gave us magnificent consoles such as the 2600 and unforgettable games such as the Alone in the Dark franchise are now a mere shadow of thier former self, with their US division even filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

They may not be doing so hot as far as videogames are concerned, but Atari are sure doing great in the realm of comic books. They recently partnered with Dynamite Entertainment to bring some of their classic characters to the printed page, with a comic based on their classic Centipede arcade game debuting in July. Singer and occasional writer Max Bemis will script the series, which is desscibed in the press release below as being a mix of “sci-fi, horror, and action”, whilst Eoin Marrow Deliver will handle artwork.

You may recall that Atari’s Centipede was also featured in Pixels, but I’m gonna go ahead and say that Adam Sandler won’t be in the comic. I swear I’m the only person who actually liked that goddamn movie.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES CENTIPEDE, THE LATEST TITLE IN THE ATARI COMIC BOOK REVOLUTION

Writer Max Bemis and Artist Eoin Marrow Deliver A Harrowing Sci-Fi Tale of Monsters and Revenge

Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite Entertainment continues its partnership with Atari®, one of the world’s most recognized producers of interactive entertainment, to create a new comics line based on beloved Atari® video game titles. The two entertainment juggernauts are pleased to announce that Centipede will join the recently released Swordquest as the latest title in the retrogaming series. Launching in July, Centipede #1 will bring a tale of survival and vengeance to comic book and gaming fans everywhere, courtesy of writer Max Bemis (Worst X-Man Ever, Foolkiller) and artist Eoin Marron (Sons of Anarchy: Redwood Original).

Sci-Fi, horror, and action collide in a comic for fans of Aliens, The Thing, and Predator. When a terrifying creature from beyond the stars attacks his planet, protagonist Dale’s journey begins, but he is not out to save his world; its already much too late for that. As the lone survivor, the only thing Dale wants is revenge.

Writer Max Bemis says, “I’m honored to be a part of bringing Centipede to life and to be allowed to do it in a somewhat less than conventional and dangerous way. Expect many mushrooms.”

Artist Eoin Marron says, “My favorite aspect of working on Centipede: Game Over is being able to take the core concept and expand on it in a way the original couldn’t at the time. That means developing a whole new world – one that’s similar to ours but not quite – and tearing it all down again from the very first issue. So, if you like your post-apocalyptic, last-man-on-Earth scenarios to be dripping with a tongue-in-cheek self-awareness and dry sense of humor, you’re going dig what we’re doing on this.”

“When Dynamite announced the launch of the Atari comic line, fans widely shared their excitement across social media, reminiscing over their fondest memories of hours spent in the Arcade and in front of their favorite Atari games,” says Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. “With the addition of Centipede to our Atari line, we’ll be able to bring that same excitement to the die-hard fans that worked hard to bring down the evilest of insects! And thanks to the massive success of Atari’s Flashback console, an entirely new generation will be able to enjoy both their catalogue of groundbreaking games, as well as the complementary comic series!”

The debut issue of Centipede features a wide selection of cover variants, providing fans and retailers with the freedom of choice! The cover artwork features the talents of Francesco Francavilla (Detective Comics, Zorro, Will Eisner’s The Spirit: Corpse-Makers), interior artist Eoin Marron, and Dan Schkade (Will Eisner’s The Spirit). A special classic game art cover will also be available. Limited variant editions in “Black & White,” “Homage,” and “Virgin Art” formats are also available as retailer incentives for comic shops that support the launch issue by achieving stocking thresholds. Fans will also be excited by the Classic Atari mini-comic incentive, a remastered reissue of the whimsical 32-page mini-comic (measuring 5″ x 7.75″) which was originally packaged with the Atari cartridge of its namesake.

Centipede #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ May 2017 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in July. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies with their local comic book retailers. Centipede will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

For a Few Zombies MoreStarring Catherine Kinsey, Michael Shelton, Chuck Hartsell

Directed by Chuck Hartsell and Chance Shirley

Ah hell, with literally every damned theme thrown at us containing the zombie sub-genre, why not factor in a little post-apocalyptic gunslinging, Eastwood western-style? Actually ol’ Clint would probably puke in his boots if he laid eyes upon something of this manner, but that’s neither here nor there – in any event, we’ve got the undead (yet again) running rampant, this time in a horror comedy titled For A Few Zombies More…lord help us all, because I’ve got a sinking feeling like this one might do some serious damage.

From co-directors Chuck Hartsell and Chance Shirley come a tale about a man named Chuck (Hartsell), a mild-mannered video-store clerk who’s simply slogging his way though life, and his polished skill-set of…uh, “videotape hawking” will come in quite handy when the impending zombie apocalypse hits in full-force. Following up on the film’s predecessor, Hide and Creep, this continuation acts as a vehicle in which Chuck plans on riding out this mess by watching old films until the zombies just waste away – solid plan, huh? Yeah, I didn’t think so either – in any event, Chuck’s blueprint develops a wrinkle when he’s paired up with a mysterious gal with no name, and her immediate intention is to locate that special someone who can put an end to all this zombie-nonsense…doctor, soldier, someone to press the “stop” button on my screener controls…anyone out there that can end this madness?

Look, I’m not going to nickle and dime this film til’ the cows come home, but I can say this: it’s a moderately fun watch that uses ample bits of humor and undead trope to convey its story and sentiment. The acting’s a bit scattered, and the story is as goofy as any other horror-comedy to wrangle down the tubes over the past few years, but it’s an admirable go at the whole pseudo-gunslinger setup, and should make any zombie aficionado generally content, that is until the next out-of-this-world flesh-chewing premise gets concocted by an independent filmmaking crew…wait a stinkin’ minute…”out of this world?” Hey, I may be onto something!

Time to head out to the Far East for a little urban legend fare… Get ready to meet The Slit-Mouthed Woman, another ghoulish girl who could give Kayako and Sadako a run for their yen!

Our Shudder Pick of the Weekend is Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman, directed by Kôji Shiraishi and starring Eriko Satô, Haruhiko Katô, and Chiharu Kawai.

Synopsis:

When local kids start disappearing, two teachers realize they must stop her before their students wind up dead. Fear Front Publishing Announces a Killer Spring Lineup of Horror Books

You’ll have no shortage of horror reading materials this spring, as Fear Front Publishing has announced a killer lineup of horror books heading our way.

From the Press Release:
The warm skies grow dark, and the temperature begins to chill the landscape like the blood when you are frightened… new literary horror is here to put a little sinister in spring.

Six new writers bring you tales of terror that will captivate with fast-paced cinematic story and new takes on classic horror tropes. Included in this wave of release are authors James Watts (Them), Melanie McCurdie (Roll the Beautiful Bones), Todd Martin (Cemetery Plots), Stone Wallace (The Children of Resurrection Gardens), Jeremy Terry and L. Michael Wooten (Hatchet Horror), and (coming in early June) Kelsey Bentley (A Journey Through the Zombie Apocalypse and I).

Stone Wallace – The Children of Resurrection Gardens
From “The Stephen King of Manitoba” (Western Report Magazine)

Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary
Lived in a house by the cemetery…

Clear Vista, California, is a picturesque town overlooking a tranquil bay on the Pacific. Quiet. Friendly. It’s a great place for children to grow up.

That is, if they grow up.

But an unusual number of children in Clear Vista don’t live long enough to grow up. A car accident. A hit-and-run. A tumble down the basement stairs. A suicide. So many tragedies fill the plots in the local cemetery, Resurrection Gardens. The worst is the disappearance of the eight-year-old Loewen twins, Heidi and Holly. When their bodies are found in the cemetery’s tool shed, the horrified townspeople are desperate to find the predator that has come into their midst.

Under the mounting pressure, Police Chief Braden Powell searches for the culprit, but he soon finds himself investigating a string of additional deaths. Adults this time. All parents of lost children. They’re definitely not murders, but they’re definitely not natural, either. Is the town of Clear Vista just unlucky, or is something far more sinister moving over the horizon?

James Watts – Them
In the small town of Maple Grove, Alabama, an ancient evil resurfaces to claim its right to life and the human race be damned.

When Ray Sanders returned to Maple Grove to attend his mother’s funeral, he never planned to have to overcome all of his insecurities in order to save the town from an evil as old as time itself. For over a hundred years, the town of Maple Grove has suffered from the deranged minds and unquenchable hunger of parasitic creatures not of our Earth. Once before in a sacrifice of blood, the forces from beyond were locked away presumably forever. Now they have returned, hungering for their chance to evolve. It will be up to Ray Sanders, his cousin Roy, and a woman either them recall to stop this evolution and prevent the reign of these ageless creatures before their evil can spread.

Todd Martin – Cemetery Plots
Horrible things happen to ordinary people all of the time. Just ask some of the people who appear in this book. People like Vince, just an ordinary businessman that makes the mistake of stopping in the wrong town one day and soon learns to regret it. Or how about Kate, a young teacher that hates her job and students who encounters the day from Hell during her last class of the day one afternoon?

Let’s not forget about Glen, whose joy of winning the contents of an abandoned storage unit at an auction soon turns to pure terror when he finds out what is inside of it. Then there’s always poor Quinn, whose dreams of wedded bliss become a nightmare when an uninvited guest crashes her bachelorette party.

You will encounter all of these terrifying experiences. Just keep it mind that after reading it you may look at your own ordinary life a bit differently because you never know. Someday you may find yourself in a similar situation as the victims within these pages.

Cemetery Plots: 13 Graves Tales–the short horror story collection people are dying to read.

Jeremy Terry/L. Michael Wooten – Hatchet Horror
For Kevin and his group of friends their yearly camping trip is like coming home. This year they are venturing into the wilds of the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, unaware that they are headed straight into the bowels of Hell.

The Hatchet Man is the name the media gave to the most prolific serial killer in Tennessee’s history. Everyone believed him dead at the hands of the police many years ago, but sometimes dead isn’t forever, but sometimes there is a way back.

When the group of campers happens upon the Hatchet Man’s remote cabin miles from civilization a chain of events is set in motion that will paint the mountains blood red. With one of their own taken by the Hatchet Man, Kevin and the others must make a desperate dash through the forest with the specter of a killer hunting them. Will any of them reach the bottom of the mountain, or will the Hatchet Man carve a new legacy of terror into their flesh?

Melanie McCurdie – Roll the Beautiful Bones
In the small town of Skull Creek, death is on the prowl. Some say that it is a copycat killer out for his moment of fame, but Jacqueline DePasse and her diligent crew of detectives soon learn that it is so much more than a tribute to the only known and convicted female serial killer in captivity, Cathleen Carson.

Jacqueline, with the assistance of crime reporter Jake Michaels and her team, soon discovers that one victim has survived and that she will be the one that must “roll the beautiful bones” and find the key to stopping a killer before he strikes again.

Coming June 1st:

  • A Journey Through the Zombie Apocalypse and I by Kelsey Bentley

LD Entertainment Compels William Friedkin’s The Devil and Father Amorth

Can you possibly think of a better person to bring us a tale of demonic possession other than William Friedkin? The man forever changed the landscape with The Exorcist, and hopefully he’ll be able to do it again with The Devil and Father Amorth.

Deadline is reporting that Friedkin’s documentary about exorcism, The Devil and Father Amorth, which has him witnessing first-hand the work of the Vatican’s in-house exorcist, was acquired by LD Entertainment who will work with ICM Partners to enter into partnerships to distribute the film worldwide.

The film’s title comes from the filmmaker’s ability to attend Father Gabiele Amorth’s ninth exorcism — it took place with an Italian woman who had been experiencing behavioral changes and “fits” that could not be explained by psychiatry; they became worse during Christian holidays.

Known as the “Dean of exorcists,” Father Amorth (who just turned 92) has performed thousands of these rituals to rid evil from the human body. On the Italian woman, Father Amorth and the demon inside the woman began conversing in Latin, a language that the woman did not know.

This film really shook me to the core,” Liddell told the site. “It made me wonder if this is possible, demonic possessions.

LD and Friedkin previously worked together on the 2011 indie film Killer Joe which was based on the Pultizer Prize-winning play from Tracy Letts and starred Matthew McConaughey.

Dubbed The Composites, Davis does this by using “…a commercially available law enforcement composite sketch software and descriptions of literary characters.

We’ve gathered a small handful of images from his site, but I recommend checking it out by clicking the link above to read the exact descriptions that create such imagery.

Showtime kicked off a new promo video series for “Twin Peaks” today titled “The Phenomenon,” and Part 1, “Creation,” features various cast and crew members discussing how “Twin Peaks” was created, David Lynch bringing his cinematic style to television, and the series becoming a cultural phenomenon. We suspect Part 2 will arrive shortly so stay tuned for “Life After Death.”

The 18-part limited event series “Twin Peaks” will debut with a two-part premiere on Sunday, May 21st, at 9PM ET/PT. Immediately following the premiere, Showtime subscribers will have access to the third and fourth parts, exclusively across the network’s streaming service, SHOWTIME ANYTIME, and SHOWTIME ON DEMAND. In its second week, “Twin Peaks” will air the third and fourth parts back-to-back on the linear network, starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT, followed by one-hour parts in subsequent weeks.

About “Twin Peaks”:
The critically-acclaimed television phenomenon “TWIN PEAKS” returns as a limited series to Showtime on May 21, 2017. “TWIN PEAKS” is written and produced by series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost and is directed entirely by David Lynch.

While the full mystery awaits, fans can expect many familiar faces, including Golden Globe winner and Emmy Award nominee Kyle MacLachlan, who reprises his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, plus Lynch as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole.

Artist Creates Astonishing Alien: Covenant Flipbook-Inspired Animation

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it now, and I’ll say it again probably a million times more during my life: I absolutely love the creativity that people possess. No matter what it is that someone is passionate about, if they put their energy towards something exciting that they love, it’s inevitable that there will be an obviously passionate end result.

To prove this, allow me to introduce you to Singaporean artist Serene Teh, who makes rather astonishing flipbook-esque art pieces. Now, I say “esque” because these flipbooks aren’t confined to one booklet. Rather, they explode from one piece of paper to the next, shifting horizontally and vertically to truly capture a sense of energy and movement.

Using this technique, Teh created a sequence that involves a Xenomorph bursting from a person’s chest and going on a killing spree. It’s absolutely magnificent in its presentation and I couldn’t be more impressed with all the work that obviously went into creating such a piece! Check it out below and let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
