Rest in Peace: Powers Boothe

0
0

Very, very sad news to post as it’s been confirmed by Beau Bridges that fellow actor Powers Boothe has passed away earlier today at the age of 68. His passing was confirmed by The Wrap, who got word from his longtime publicist that the actor died in his sleep of natural causes.

Born in 1948 in Snyder, Texas, Boothe acting career primarily began in the early 1980’s. Through his career, he appeared in such films as Stalingrad, Tombstone, Red Dawn, The Avengers, and shows like “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “24”. For horror fans, he was known for his roles as FBI Agent Wesley Doyle in the 2001 psychological horror/thriller Frailty as well as Senator Roark in 2005’s Robert Rodriguez-directed Sin City.

This news comes entirely out of the blue and we’re shocked. We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family in this terrible time.

Get Even Gets Weird in New Trailer

0
0

Although it’s being released this month, we still don’t know a whole lot about Bandai Namco’s survival horror game Get Even. Developed by The Farm 51, it was originally announced back in 2014, and then fell off the radar until it resurfaced last year. It’s set in an abandoned asylum, with you playing as a guy called Cole Black who has lost his memories, but we don’t know too much else.

A new trailer was released today on Bandai Namco’s YouTube channel, and as with everything else about the game, it’s pretty damn mysterious. It doesn’t say much about the plot, but it does have a dude impersonating the Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as if things weren’t already creepy enough. It looks like we’re in for one incredibly creepy adventure when Get Even launches on PC, Xbox One and PS4 on May 26.

Synopsis:
Black – an ice-cold mercenary and hired gun – awakes in a mysterious old asylum with no memory of his past.

Under the guidance of his anonymous captor, ‘Red’, Black embarks on a form of treatment, facilitated by a unique technology – a headset that allows the user to relive their memories and experience them again in the present.

And so Black tries to remember.

With the help of the ‘Pandora’ headset, he travels into the depths of his own mind to explore the truth behind the only thing he can remember: the failed rescue attempt of a teenage girl with a bomb strapped to her chest.

Following leads and information gathered by Red, Black begins to piece together the kidnapping plot of the girl he failed to save.

Yet the more Black uncovers, the more questions he has. Who’s Jasper? Can Red really be trusted? And what is this ‘other life’ Black keeps seeing glimpses of?

Black needs answers before he ends up like his fellow inmates, before he finally loses his mind, and before the Asylum takes him over for good.

Features:
IMMERSE YOURSELF INTO A MATURE, MOVIE-LIKE STORY
Go deep into an intimate and mature story that unfolds in a movie-like way. Forget good and bad, your choices will bear their own consequences and affect the evolution of the game.

INVESTIGATE AND STRIKE HARD TO UNCOVER THE TRUTH

EXPERIENCE THE GRAPHICAL AND AUDIO REVOLUTION OF GET EVEN
Delve into true-to-life environments recreated by a unique 3D-scanning technology, for absolute immersion. All this framed by a unique and deep audio design that interacts with your actions.

Black Static #57 (Magazine)

Black Static 57 cover imageEdited by Andy Cox

Published by TTA Press

It’s a small collection of four (count ‘em) stories that make up the fiction portion of Black Static’s fifty-seventh issue… but does that mean there’s a lack of material to dig your teeth into this time around?

Thankfully, the answer is “no”, with this issue’s offerings kicking off in top form with Ralph Robert Moore’s Will You Accept These Flowers From Me?

Wannabe big-shot stage magician Michael, alongside his performance partner, a small monkey named Bella, spends most of his life within the walls of cheap, seedy motels in between scraping by on lacklustre performances in dive bars and low-rent clubs.

Disillusioned with his life of illusion, Michael is on the verge of giving up – until he comes into possession of a legendary magician’s hat that sports bona fide supernatural powers. As we know in horror, though, sometimes what appear to be blessings can actually be curses – and Michael’s attempts to get to grips with the workings of the hat lead him down a path of greater futility.

Bathed in bleakness, Moore’s tale is first and foremost an exercise in character and exploration of the human condition – the continual grasping for more, for dreams that remain firmly out of reach… and how steadfastly we remain blind to not just the answers before us, but to what really matters in our lives on a moment-to-moment basis.

Michael’s relationships are superbly drawn, including a burgeoning romance with bar staffer Erin and the more existential bond with his faithful stage (and life) companion, Bella. The latter, especially, is used to great effect by Moore to deepen the emotional darkness of his tale, and to tug more than once at the heart strings as Michael’s undoing begins and ends.

Next up is Simon Avery’s Sunflower Junction. Here, our narrator finds himself following a line of intrigue as to the whereabouts of underground musician Hugo Lawrence, whose sole album recording appears to have the power to pierce the psyche, manifesting dreams as broken, husk-like flower representations.

Hugo’s music was never perfected, however, and he withdrew from the public eye. Taking a detour from his own listless, meaningless daily existence, Avery’s narrator sets out to track down the elusive Lawrence – but what he finds is not entirely what he’d like… even if it is precisely what he needs.

As a writer, Avery is incredibly talented at creating lives – building surroundings, points of view and a general sense of the values that allow his characters to live as they do. His narrator, here, lives in an old townhouse shared between him, an alcoholic lady, and a smack-addicted man whose sole happiness in life he can only extract from memories of the past.

It’s dark, sure, but unmistakably human – an overarching theme that Avery uses to build fantastical (if grim) perspectives on the nature and function of creativity and escapism, thought and emotion. Sunflower Junction is an absorbing experience – helped along by the classical “missing person” mystery and creative MacGuffin (for which yours truly is most definitely a sucker) – and much more thought-provoking than one may expect, all told.

Mike O’Driscoll hits the pages next with Shadows on Parade, which follows the relationship between the apparently unhinged Gillian and her abusive partner, James. In Gillian’s case, she maintains a disturbing obsession with the previous men in her life – keeping photographs, videos and records of her past relationships, asserting that only by regularly referencing them can she continue to exist.

Somehow, they are her only link to material being – assurances that she is in fact real. As James and Gillian’s relationship grows, James becomes progressively more controlling and paranoid before his distaste toward Gillian’s activity grows to a head, revealing the uncanny truth of her history and her rituals.

Shadows on Parade is an interesting piece, playing quite freely with obscurity and questions of reliability. Is James really going through the abusive partner checklist by lying to Gillian and attempting to isolate her from external support structures? Or is the truth that he has been trying to get to the bottom of her neuroses through his own investigation?

Given that the story opens with a backhand to the face, it’s obvious that James is not a man worth sympathising with, but still, O’Driscoll knows how to unbalance the cart as he goes, making for a consistently compelling read as we wait for the disquieting truth of Gillian’s past to be revealed.

Aliya Whitely finishes off this issue’s fiction with The Chambermaid. In this short tale, we follow the daily tasks of young hotel maid Bonnie as she travels the rooms of the Avalon, dusting webs and occasionally flicking through discarded belongings of past and present guests. Soon, she has a meeting with her colleague, Xania, who fancies herself a psychic of sorts.

Offering up a series of pop psychology judgements based on photographs of guests, Xania also gives Bonnie a description of the young woman’s own future – one Bonnie disagrees with, and forces deep down inside her as she resolves to avoid such a cookie-cutter fate.

And that’s all I could take from this particular story, sadly. A self-glorifying palm reader tells a younger woman something she disagrees with, or would rather avoid. Yes, it’s a perfectly capable reflection of the logic-meets-emotion clash of human thought processes, but as a standalone tale it feels lacking in both substance and discomfort. Throughout multiple readings, any greater significance continued to escape, I’m afraid.

As usual, in the back end we have Black Static’s bevy of film and literature reviews, while up front there’s Lynda E. Rucker and Ralph Robert Moore’s regular columns. Also making it in this month is a high-quality Q&A with author Andrew Hook.

Pour Yourself a Scotch Lodge, a Cocktail Inspired By Twin Peaks

One of my favorite channels on YouTube is Distinguished Spirits, which is devoted to showing people how to make delicious cocktails. However, what I adore about the channel is that the first third to half of the video are devoted to the history of the drink and explaining a bit about it. So while I’m learning a recipe for a classy, delightful beverage, I’m also getting an interesting and informative lesson about a cocktail’s origins.

Just a couple of days ago, the channel uploaded a recipe for a cocktail known as the “Scotch Lodge”. Based off another drink called the “Black Lodge”, which comes from the iconic location in the “Twin Peaks” universe, this drink uses “…Scotch Whisky, Cynar, Punt e Mes (Sweet Vermouth), Cherry Liqueur, Orange Bitters and an Orange twist“.

As the channel explains, “The drink was a riff on an earlier drink Klus created called the Black Lodge, which was named after the creepy, netherworld as experienced mostly through the eyes of Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks. The Black Lodge was a the same as the Scotch Lodge only the base spirit was overproof Rye Whiskey instead of smoky Scotch whisky.

If you’re into having a tasty beverage at the end of a long day, one that you can sit back and sip at your leisure, then I recommend not only checking out this video but also giving this channel a chance!

The 18-part limited event series “Twin Peaks” will debut with a two-part premiere on Sunday, May 21st, at 9PM ET/PT. Immediately following the premiere, Showtime subscribers will have access to the third and fourth parts, exclusively across the network’s streaming service, SHOWTIME ANYTIME, and SHOWTIME ON DEMAND. In its second week, “Twin Peaks” will air the third and fourth parts back-to-back on the linear network, starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT, followed by one-hour parts in subsequent weeks.

About “Twin Peaks”:
The critically-acclaimed television phenomenon “TWIN PEAKS” returns as a limited series to Showtime on May 21, 2017. “TWIN PEAKS” is written and produced by series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost and is directed entirely by David Lynch.

While the full mystery awaits, fans can expect many familiar faces, including Golden Globe winner and Emmy Award nominee Kyle MacLachlan, who reprises his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, plus Lynch as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole.

Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential broadcast series of all time, “TWIN PEAKS” followed the inhabitants of a quaint Northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, was shockingly murdered. The town’s sheriff welcomed the help of FBI agent Dale Cooper, who came to town to investigate the case. As Cooper conducted his search for Laura’s killer, the town’s secrets were gradually exposed. The mystery that ensued set off an eerie chain of events that plunged the inhabitants of Twin Peaks into a darker examination of their very existence. Twenty-five years later, the story continues…

Demian Bichir Talks Alien: Covenant, Working with Ridley Scott, and More

0
0

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, members of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think to be an uncharted paradise. The mysterious world soon turns dark and dangerous when a hostile alien life form forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival.

Demian Bichir plays one of the astronauts in Alien: Covenant, premiering on Friday, and we had a chance to chat with him recently.

Dread Central: What are your on thoughts on the story?

Demian Bichir: You know, we actors always hope and dream to be able to work with the best in this industry, anywhere, whether that’s film or TV or theater so that alone, Ridley Scott’s name, that means everything. I would go anywhere he wants me to go, I would attend any call to do anything, whether that’s having dinner, playing tennis, anything; but if that invitation was to work in one of his films, you can only imagine what that represents for any actor. I just consider myself very lucky to be a part of this.

DC: To what do you attribute our fascination about space? And why is it never good?

DB: Well, we make it bad because it’s very attractive, because that’s when drama happens and when terror happens. I personally want to think there’s something happier out there, that there’s a fascist-free type of world, not in this movie, but I think our fascination with the unknown is the fascination with exploring. That’s what happens when we are kids; they tell us not to go there and we go there. So in this case, we all hope that’s going to be a happy ending, a happy journey, but it doesn’t happen.

DC: Is this your first sci-fi/horror project?

DB: Yes. As an actor, you hope that if you’re going to be part of a new genre, that you will do the best, be the master of it. Ridley Scott is probably the best; I would say he’s a genius as far as I’m concerned so that is a safety type of feeling because you know you will be safe and you will be fine, anywhere he wants to take us. It’s like having the perfect guide; you know that he knows, and that doesn’t happen on every project.

DC: Was it intimidating working with Scott?

DB: He makes sure that fear, whether it’s somewhat present or not, goes away. He’s an artist and an extraordinary human being. Before being so famous, before what his name represents, he knows that the only way he can create art is through collaboration and the only way he can bring to the table the best of you is if he creates that environment so he’s a noble man, a generous artist, and he loves his actors; and that’s a joy.

DC: Tell us about filming in Australia.

DB: All that… all that and more. The first thing that we all said when we arrived in that natural set in New Zealand was, “Shit, this looks like a different planet, like another planet I’ve never seen before!” Nowadays it’s really easy to go on the Web and explore New Zealand and see this and that, there’s some really weird shaped mountains, they’re not “earthy” so… it all begins there. But then he builds these sets and in the Fox studios in Sydney, three different stages were taken by him and we actually saw the entrance form as we were shooting, they were getting ready, and by the time we stepped onto those sets and everything was ready to go, it was very difficult for us to understand it was fiction in the movie. I’m sorry, let me just finish very quickly with that idea. There were some times that we forgot our trailers were outside and it was a safe place to go and get shelter, sometimes we couldn’t even see where the cameras were because of the darkness, because of the set design, everybody was there to create this environment, we all needed to reproduce that.

DC: How does Covenant fit in after Prometheus?

DB: This ship is a microcosm of what represents humanity. Everything that we are, as we know it, is on that ship, we’re all there, all kinds of human beings, all kinds of beliefs, all kinds of everything and as always happens in a closed environment we share the same roof with different people, you will find some challenges. Even in your own family, even if you all know each other, there’s always discrepancies, there’s always something to discuss about and fight about and fight for so you will find all that there and this is like a revolutionary act, when you involve yourself in such an experience as this, an inter galactic journey, in search of a new place to probably live in and colonize. You know there is a possibility that you won’t make it, there’s a big possibility that you will die during the process and that’s what revolutions are for. When you are part of a revolution you know there’s a pretty good chance you won’t make it. Revolutions are always perfect and fantastic for other people, for new generations, for other generations so hopefully we will get this chance to save humanity in our new home.

Alien Covenant

DC: How about working with Fassbender? Did you have many scenes with him?

DB: Yeah, we all share a lot of the action that goes on in the film and sometimes it’s difficult when you get to work with a superstar, such a big name like Michael, sometimes that can be difficult. But I insist, it’s the head of the project that makes everything flow easily and Ridley and Michael have known each other for many years and I know now why they love each other so much because they’re the same type of artists. This man is also such a noble and generous man, Michael, he’s there for you and you know he’s covering your back, not only on the set but living together. Having this chance to be together for such a long time, it’s always about that, the human experience on any project is what captivates you at the end of the project because that’s what you can keep in your heart and this was one of the happiest experiences because everybody was there for the same reason, in the same spirit and it was really, really easy to deal with everyone.

DC: There’s a lot of talk about using the word “alien” when it pertains to people and immigrants…

DB: We are fighting. We all know that this is a fight we need to put up and this resistance that’s happening from day zero its real and it’s around the world. It’s millions and millions fighting stupidity and we will win because of that, because we’re not in our homes, kicking back, scratching our tummies eating sandwiches. We are all worried about the same so we, this is really interesting, we are united in a really powerful way so maybe this character, this clown, this is what he made possible, shaking this environment he made us all come together to fight for the same goal. It is very serious, no one should take this lightly and I think art, as well as science and sports, which are the best face of us as human beings, it can create that change. We want to think that we do that every time we are responsible with a note, with something we write, with a comment we make, the power, we have space in the newspaper, radio station, TV station, what you say matters, what you write will make a difference, what we do makes a difference. We are doing a play right now at the Taper Forum, and it’s about that, it’s about discrimination that Mexican-Americans have suffered for many, many years. This immigration reform that we’ve been fighting for is nothing new, is nothing that just happened from top to bottom now. No, this is an old issue that is one of those social struggles that will be won, like many others in the history of this country but we’re up there, we’re up there, we’re awake, we’re aware and we’re fighting.

Look for Alien: Covenant (review) everywhere on May 19th.

Synopsis:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Exclusive: P.J. Starks Talks About His Upcoming Projects

0
0

In addition to creating the successful Volumes of Blood series, P.J. Starks is currently serving as producer on no fewer than five separate upcoming horror films. He took some time out of his extremely busy schedule to grant us the following interview about his upcoming projects.

DC: Can you give us a brief overview of the films you’re producing?

PJS: Butcher the Bakers is a horror comedy that recently premiered about a Death that has been fired from his job and goes rogue so a couple of idiot humans are hired to track him down and stop him. It’s like The Frighteners meets Bill and Ted, very funny and very cool. Tyler and his crew did a tremendous job. Richard Stringham’s Close Calls is a telephonic terror throwback that will keep audiences glued to the screen. It’s got some psychological thriller mixed together with old school horror, I think fans of the genre will really get a kick out of this film.

Deimosimine is a demonic head trip and recently had some setbacks, but production is underway again and all the reshoot are near completion. It’s from Chad Armstrong who also runs the distribution company LC Films. Keep your eyes peeled for this one later on in the year.

The final two films are both anthologies, the first being 10/31 a Halloween themed mix of monsters, killers and mayhem from Rocky Gray. All the screen shots from dallies look fantastic and I’ve seen a few edited scenes. I think this one will definitely become a holiday favorite and hopefully fans will want to rewatch it every time October rolls around.

Lastly is the creature feature Cryptids that is still in production. For anyone who’s a fan of 80’s monster movies are gonna love this film. It’s an all practical effects thrill ride. It touches on the more obscure monster legends and brings some of them to life like never before, I’m a monster movie junkie so I’m really excited about this on and the monsters look badass.

DC: So in addition to directing, you’re now serving as producer on no fewer than five upcoming feature length horror films. That’s pretty impressive. How did this come about?

PJS: After the Volumes of Blood franchise took off, especially after Horror Stories, it opened up so many doors and opportunities to network and reach out to other filmmakers. I worked with both Rocky Gray and Justin M. Seaman on VOBHS, so my transition over to producing 10/31 and Cryptids was a pretty fluid one. They’re both extremely talented and I was excited to come onto the projects and help in both a creative capacity and a marketing capacity.

PR and Marketing is something that I’ve come to excel at and, in some cases, is also the most time consuming and difficult process of working on indie film. Most filmmakers have no clue where to start when it comes to promoting their projects, that’s where I come into the picture. Especially with Butcher the Bakers, Tyler has such a strong and hilarious film on his hands. It deserved a wider audience. By happenstance I was contacted by the lead, Ryan M. Ziegler, and after talking with him and Tyler we share a similar mind set and passion for the genre. Helping these guys out was a no brainer.

Now both VOBHS and BTB are screening back to back at the MayDay Film Fest on May 20th. I love collaboration and meeting these filmmakers, helping with their projects and talking about what’s next has been really exciting.

DC: The films you’re working on are so varied and unique when compared to one another, was this a conscience decision?

PJS: In some ways yes and in others no. Obviously I ask a lot of questions and want to learn all I can about the project to make sure that I won’t be producing a porno, however, it’s not just about the film itself, but the people behind the camera. All the filmmakers I’ve been working with thus far are so in love with the genre and have such a thirst for making something cool and unique.

I’m a lifelong fan of horror and most all of the sub-genres that come with it. I’ve found that fans make the best filmmakers. They make the films that truly coalesce with audiences. So those are the filmmakers I want to work with. These are the auteurs I want to help. It’s not about money or ego, it’s about the fervor for creativity. If I can connect with the filmmaker, then connecting with their vision is an easy process. I’ve managed to build some real friendships along the path of producing and I’ll continue to do so as long as the opportunities present themselves.

DC: How do you find the process of producing compared to directing?

PJS: Producing is a lot like directing, there’s just more overall responsibility. Where a director must allow his cast to be creative, producers equally have to do this for the directors. Everyone has a different style, but I realize that I’m not the only inventive entity on the production and I have to allow others to be creative. There are limits of course, you can’t let everyone get their way all of the time. Producing is a lot of planning, compromise and in some cases saying “no”. Producing is having to shoulder a lot of the stress to keep the production on track, even if that means booting or replacing cast or crew from the film. It’s the director’s job to have a vision based on the script and bring that to fruition, it’s my job to make sure the entire production gets to that finish line.

I’ve said a million times that producing anthologies are logistical nightmares, but it’s also the most rewarding. There’s so many things that have to happen from the first day of pre-production to the last day of post and keeping that boat afloat is what we do.

DC: Can you say anything about Volumes of Blood III?

PJS: I could say it’s going to be bigger and better, but that’s what you’re expecting me to say. I’m really excited about the third and final film. To clarify that, it’s going to be the final film in the current story lines of Volumes of Blood. However, we’ve created a universe of characters that will live beyond the trilogy. We have some spin offs planned that will continue certain characters and killers.

And who knows? If VOB3 does well then maybe there’ll be a fourth. My good friend and fellow producer Eric Huskisson and I couldn’t be more stoked about the involvement of Andy Palmer and Warner Davis at Petri Entertainment. To have the creative team behind The Funhouse Massacre on board is just really exciting. We’ve been talking with them a lot about the film and we have some kickass ideas on how to make the next film really stand out. The story I conceived is in line with the other films, but still holds its own so we aren’t rehashing anything. Fans can expect even more gore, a big body count, a story about werewolves and The Face will go on his biggest killing spree yet. No pun intended, but I’m dying to start production on this bad boy.

About P.J.’s upcoming projects:

Butcher the Bakers:
A grim reaper terrorizes a small town, killing and collecting souls for a purpose only he knows. Sam and Martin, slackers who work at the local bakery, are hired by a mysterious stranger to stop him from killing again. This leads them on a ridiculous journey full of blood, guts, monsters, and cookies!

Hometown Hero Productions is an independent film studio hell-bent on making delightfully weird films your mother will hate to love. Founded in 2015 by a naive group of small town fools, it has turned into a productive team of passionate and creative people. Butcher is third film from writer/director Tyler Amm (River City Panic, Grace’s Room) and executive produced by P.J. Starks, creator of the critically acclaimed Volumes of Blood franchise.

Between all the phone calls, the drugs she has taken, and surprise visits from some unexpected guests, Morgan now thinks everyone around her is out to kill her. And to make matters worse … she keeps forgetting to give grandma her meds.

This upcoming feature-length horror film from S & Drive Pictures was produced, written and directed by S & Drive’s founder, Richard Stringham, who started the independent production company in Sherwood, Arkansas. Vowing to make a retro horror piece that tipped its hat to heroes like Bava, Argento, Hooper, Craven, Kubrick, and Lynch … Stringham assembled a local team of Arkansans to force “Close Calls” into existence. He also joined forces with Volumes of Blood creator P.J. Starks, who signed on as Associate Producer for the project.

The film, which is currently in post-production and slated for an early 2017 release, will feature an original synth-driven score by Grammy Award winner Rocky Gray (formerly of Evanescence; soundtrack for The Barn), and special makeup effects by visual FX artist, Les Galusha (Contracted).

Utilizing synthwave music, practical effects, and sets constructed on a soundstage, Stringham has promised that “Close Calls” will not just be a retro throwback film, but a film that offers a refreshing take on old-fashioned visual storytelling.

You can read more about “Close Calls” on IMDb and follow the film and S & Drive Pictures through Facebook. S & Drive Pictures is presently putting together a trailer for the picture, but the official teaser is available to watch now on YouTube and Vimeo.

Deimosimine

Cindy is a twenty-something girl who has had a rough life. She believes that her wealthy mother killed her father and got away with it. After years of running from this horrible past, she turned finally to heroin to cope with her painful memories.

In reality truly caring for her daughter but being emotionally unable to reach out to her child as she should, Cindy’s mother uses her obscene wealth to find a way to get her daughter the treatment she feels she needs; a radical, experimental treatment: DEIMOSIMINE; a drug that causes an addict to experience powerfully negative emotional reactions to the drugs they crave. Theoretically, the patient will not want to go back to those dark places that the reaction of the DEIMOSIMINE creates in their minds, and thus stop using.

An unforeseen factor, however, causes Cindy to have a different reaction to the drug than is anticipated, and the results are a bloody and horrific journey into misunderstood madness.

Believing she’s begun the road to recovery, Cindy will find herself enveloped in the subconscious horror that the drug creates in her psyche; a world of demons, evil, blood, and death. Despite her efforts and those of they who support her, she will find herself a slave to the drug, and the demented terrors of the world that it shows to her. The tragedy of a soul brought to such heinous destruction of the undeserving will be showcased as her perception brings bloody vengeance on the perceived threats to herself and society.

Exclusive: The Void’s Troy James Talks Contortion, Horror, and What’s Next!

This year brought the incredible horror film The Void (review), which delighted audiences with its stunning use of practical FX. And as with any film that features fantastically crafted outfits, we have to remember that there are actual people who don these terrifying visions and bring to life these monsters. There’s a reason that horror fans know and love people like Kane Hodder, Doug Jones, Javier Botet, etc… These people don’t just put on a costume and go through the motions, they embody the character they become and create something memorable and amazing.

Related Story: We Chat with The Void Composer Martin MacPhail of Blitz//Berlin; Exclusive Audio Sketchbook Reveal

I’d like to introduce you to “Twisty” Troy James, who appeared in The Void as well as Guillermo del Toro’s “The Strain”, and may very well be the next big name when it comes to contortionists and body horror! Below is an interview with James, who discusses his incredible ability, what it’s like to be in a movie like The Void, and what’s next for him!

Make sure to give him a follow on Twitter.

Dread Central: Alright, I gotta know what’s going on with your body. How are you this flexible?

Troy James: I have no idea. I was born preternaturally flexible. I like to think it was because I was born 4-months prematurely, but otherwise… *shrugs*.
The physicians of social media have decided I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. That’s news to me, but maybe I should go with that.

DC: How long have you been able to do these amazing contortions?

TJ: I have always been this flexible. no training, or practice required. In fact, when I was young I took it for granted, thinking everyone could bend their body like I could – that it wasn’t abnormal. It wasn’t until the other kids started teasing me for it being weird/gross that I realized something was up. I got super embarrassed, and hid my ability until high school where it suddenly became the coolest thing, and everyone loved it.

DC: At what point did you realize this ability would be great for horror?

TJ: Hmm… To pay my way through undergrad, I worked as a ride operator at Canada’s Wonderland, a theme park in my city. Sometimes when ride were down, or lines were long, I would entertain guests with flexible tricks. One night, my ride crew forced me to show the managers my talent. They liked it so much that they asked me to switch jobs to act as a monster actor during their end of season Halloween Haunt. I got to dress up in a cool costume with amazing make-up artists transforming me into whatever they wanted before I was let loose to roam the park, frightening everyone I could find. Turns out I was rather good at it.

DC: You appeared in The Void, which has received a lot of acclaim from the horror community for its usage of practical FX. What was it like being in that film?

TJ: The Void marks my first time ever appearing on film ever. I was a complete novice and had no idea what to do. And this wasn’t even like a student film that you would make in your parents’ garage or basement for free pizza. They flew me out to Sault Ste. Marie. It was the real deal. I was super nervous, but luckily the cast and crew were the nicest people you could possibly meet.

Everything was tangible. Blood flowing down the walls; violently exploding bodies; squishy, gross-to-the-touch monster guts; oh, and the creatures…

When I first make my appearance in The Void, I am covered with a sheet, lying in a wonderfully contorted position. So, we are shooting this scene, I am chilling out in position, sans sheet waiting for the next take. One of the production guys comes over to talk to someone else. They are both chatting over my body for a minute or so when I decide to turn my head to get a look at them. The guy freaks out. He thought I was a prop all that time, and the sudden movement just ruined him. Score one more for practical FX!

I actually didn’t know what I looked like on film until I saw the release. Kudos to Steven and Jeremy and everyone else involved for their vision and technical skill. It was a blast working with everyone on set.

DC: When you’re wearing all of the makeup and prostheses needed to turn you into a horrific abomination, how does that impact your ability to contort and, furthermore, how does it help your performance?

TJ: At its core, I was wearing a custom-built body suit and mask, which fit pretty well, and allowed me free range of motion. (Thanks, Devon!) The magic really came from Nicola’s awesome paint job, and Steven’s skill at sculpting. I’m not even moving, and it’s terrifying.

The fact that the suit is skin tight enhances the effect because you get to see everything twisting and moving in ways that most bodies don’t. I felt a twinge of pride during the screening in Toronto when I appeared onscreen and the audience gasped audibly.

DC: It seems like this ability to contort your body is perfect for horror roles but if you could choose to venture into other genres, where would you like to go?

TJ: Motion Capture! I want to be in video games! Ubisoft! Hey, are you reading this?

DC: Both Doug Jones and Javier Botet are widely recognized in the horror community for the physicality they bring to their performances. Do you think we’re going to add the name Troy James to that list?

TJ: Ooh, they are good at what they do. People keep mentioning these two masters, but then they say my name in the next breath and I have to stop them because if they are Horror Royalty, I am more akin to a Slightly-Distressing Peasant. I did get meet Doug at a wrap party for Guillermo del Toro’s “The Strain” though. He’s so nice! Javier fills me with equal parts admiration and envy.

I’ve got some work to do, but don’t forget about me! When I’m upside down, I can open and close doors, zip up and down stairs, hop onto stuff… Oh! and I’m actually rather speedy when I decide to stop twisting about and get to it. You wouldn’t me haunting your house at night!

DC: What’s next for you?

TJ: I have a few Horror/Sci-Fi gigs coming up, and I’ve raised a few eyebrows in Japan. A trip there may be in the cards. Ah! I want to see Sadako and Kayako, from the Ring and the Grudge respectively. Can you imagine the three of us together? You haven’t seen the last of me yet.

Did You Know There Was Almost an Aliens-Inspired Children’s Cartoon Show?

0
0

The conversion of adult-themed properties into children’s cartoons is not unheard of. Anyone who’s read the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics knows that they were pretty damn violent. Ghostbusters, which may be beloved by kids the world over, is certainly aimed at a more mature audience. And Beetlejuice? Sorry, but the “Ghost with the Most” was NOT meant for kids, no matter its PG rating!

I bring this up because this phenomenon was essentially a gateway for many children to get taste of something before moving onto something more intense, something deeper. How many of us grew up watching “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, “The Real Ghostbusters”, or “Beetlejuice” and then graduated to watching the films or reading the comics they were based off?

I bring this up because while I grew up with the Alien films (my mom loves Sigourney Weaver, so she would watch them with me), I recognize how many of my friends weren’t allowed to experience the same. If a movie was R-rated, they’d have to wait until they were older or they’d have to find a way to sneak watching it behind their parents’ backs. If only there had been a cartoon series based on the Alien franchise that parents would’ve been okay with!

Funny enough, that almost DID happen! Back in 1992, a cartoon series based around Ripley and the Colonial Marines was supposed to begin airing a few months after the release of David Fincher’s Alien 3. However, due to the lackluster response to the film and the alright but not earth-shattering box office numbers, it was cancelled before a single episode even aired. But there’s more to the story than just that. In fact, there was an entire transmedia marketing plan in place that would’ve included comics, toys, and more.

Now, little is known about the series itself. Supposedly Fox outsourced the animation to a Korean studio and everything was going swimmingly, up to and including having merchandise and toys designed and ready to go to production. In fact, there were items that hit store shelves with the “Operation Aliens” label on them, including this Plaster Moulding & Painting Set, this board game, this puzzle, or this TIGER handheld electronic game. But then the plug was pulled, the pilot episode of “Operation: Aliens” yanked, and the entire operation ceased. To this day, no footage of whatever was animated has surfaced and the only proof that such a cartoon exists is in the form of the above screenshots.

The general thought of the series was that each episode would’ve followed Ellen Ripley and several of the marines from Aliens, including some of the dead ones, as they travel the galaxy and face off against the Xenomorphs in various environments on different worlds. By doing this, the studio and toy makers, specifically Kenner, could then justify creating many of the Alien toys that seemingly made no sense, such as the bull, mantis, or Flying Queen (see examples here). As we’ve seen in Alien 3, when a facehugger attaches itself to something non-human (such as a dog or bull, depending on the version of the film you watch), the Xenomorph’s characteristics will change accordingly. That mechanic would’ve given the show a wide variety of options to play with. Can you imagine if they’d found a way to have a facehugger impregnate a giant insect? Or what about something that lives in water?

A couple of years after “Operation: Aliens” was supposed to air, Dark Horse Comics released a trading card-format comic where people had to collect 15 different cards and place them in the right order to reveal a short original story. With art by Denis Beauvais and writing from Jerry Prosser, the story followed a Lieutenant of the USMC who is tasked with rescuing scientists at a research facility where Xenomorph specimens have gotten loose. While it’s never been reprinted, the good folk over at Comic Art Fans have collected them and you can see them in all their glory.

So why was the cartoon cancelled? That’s the problem. No one knows. The most obvious answer is that it’d be damn near impossible to create a show based off the Alien universe that is kid friendly. While HBO’s “Tales From the Crypt” did get its own Saturday Morning Cartoon adaptation, it’s easy enough to create scary stories that are age appropriate. I don’t know how “Operation: Aliens” would’ve been able to find a way to tell the story of Xenomorphs being birthed without showing chests exploding. That’s kind of an integral part of the Xenomorph birthing process…

While the show may not have worked back in the early 90’s, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be successful today. Shows like “Rick and Morty“, “Robot Chicken“, and so many more have paid homage to the series AND are rather adult in nature themselves. I think we could all imagine Adult Swim getting behind a show like this. Now, who wants to start the petition to make this happen?

While we all sit here wondering just what the hell the problem is in terms of coming up with a new Friday the 13th film, fan David B. Stewart III has released his feature length 1995 fan film, Friday the 13th Part X: To Hell and Back to the masses via YouTube a couple of years back.

Myself, and a group of High School students from Central Bucks High School East in Bucks County, PA set out to make a sequel of our own,” says Stewart. “Armed with VHS cameras and primitive film making equipment, we began production in the winter of 1995. By October of 1995 we had a complete, linear edited picture. With only a small number of VHS copies being passed around our little movie became almost non-existent until now. Re-Edited for the first time since 1995 with newly digitized footage and preserved in the best possible format. I am proud to bring you ‘Friday the 13th Part X-To Hell and Back’ The ReduX. I hope you enjoy it.

Tina Celentano, David B. Stewart III, Tina Celentano and Sean Hutcheon stars as Jason Voorhees. Thanks to Bloody Disgusting for bringing this to our attention!

Fox Cancels Scream Queens

Over the past several days we learned that Fox has renewed “Lucifer” and “The Exorcist,” cancelled “Sleepy Hollow,” and has plans to bring back “The X-Files,” which left their remaining genre show, “Scream Queens,” unaccounted for. That changed today with news the network has decided to cancel “Scream Queens” following its lackluster second season.

Per TV Guide, Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman made the announcement as follows: “Over the course of the two seasons, it feels like it was a complete story. We have no plans to go back there to tell more stories.”

Ryan Murphy’s anthology series starred Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourd, and Jamie Lee Curtis. The show earned a straight-to-series order back in 2015 but was never a ratings hit.

Don’t Breathe Sequel Still Breathing

It’s been a while since last we heard anything regarding the upcoming sequel to Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe, and while we still do not have much, Alvarez confirmed for a fan via Twitter that the movie is still happening.

Look for more info on this flick as it comes.

Don’t Breathe 2 is something we definitely want to do. The challenge obviously is [that] we just don’t want to do the same movie again, slap a 2 on it, and call it a day. We’d feel so embarrassed if we did that,” Alvarez told us months ago. “That’s Hollywood! That’s the devil! We don’t want to make a sequel just because we can. But then we got an idea that we’re really excited about, and I won’t tell you what it is because it will spoil the whole thing.

Producer Sam Raimi added, “It’s only the greatest idea for a sequel that I’ve ever heard! I’m not kidding!
