In what is no doubt the most WTF news of the day THR is reporting out of Cannes that Zac Efron has signed on to a new film project, and he’ll be playing one of the world’s most notorious serial killers.

Efron will star as Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, which will be helmed by Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2).

Michael Werwie wrote the script for the project, which is told through the perspective of Elizabeth Kloepfer, Bundy’s longtime girlfriend who went years denying the accusations against Bundy, but ultimately turned him in to the police. Only nearing his execution, when Bundy began talking about his extensive and heinous murders, did Kloepfer, and the rest of the world, learn the true scope of his numerous and grizzly murders.

Voltage is introducing the project, which paints Bundy as a portrait of evil yet simultaneously chillingly normal, to buyers in Cannes.

Nicolas Chartier and Ara Keshishian are producing via Voltage along with Michael Costigan (Ghost in the Shell, Out of the Furnace). Efron’s Ninjas Runnin’ Wild banner will produce alongside Michael Simkin and Jason Barrett.

Principal photography is set to begin October 9. Voltage will fully finance and handling international sales. CAA and UTA represent the domestic rights.

Based off of the best-selling The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the series hails from showrunner/executive producer/director/writer Carlton Cuse along with co-creators/executive producers/writers del Toro and Hogan. Gary Ungar, J. Miles Dale, Bradley Thompson, and David Weddle also serve as executive producers.

Perform Public Beheadings in Horror RPG The Executioner

I’m a proud left-wing liberal through and through, although I still support the death penalty because some people are just such absolute scum that the world would simply be better off without them. Although I’d pass the sentence if I was on the jury, I definitely wouldn’t want to be the guy who pulls the lever or wields the axe or administers the injection. And I wouldn’t envy the person that does.

The upcoming game The Executioner puts you in the shoes of guy whose business is literally death. You play as the Royal Executioner of a country that performs so many public executions that even Saudi Arabi would blush.

In addition to chopping off heads during public executions, you’ll also be tasked with torturing confessions out the accused parties. You’ll have your own torture chamber and there’ll be some incredibly brutal tools and techniques at your disposal. Developer Lesser Evil Games describe The Executioner in its Kickstarter campaign describes it as being “An RPG horror that puts you in the shoes of a man who tortures people for a living and has to fight to preserve his own waning sanity”, so this looks like a game that will seriously screw with your mind.

The Executioner — a Horror RPG about a monster in every man
Tempt your inner demons in this psychological horror RPG where you play as the Royal executioner on his endeavor to stay sane.

You’re the executioner, and there’s a criminal strapped to the chair in front of you. What do you do? Torture till you get a confession or risk angering your employer? Do you satisfy the crowd’s thirst for cruelty or grant a merciful death to the man you’re not even sure is guilty?

We at Lesser Evil Games are creating The Executioner to put such choices in front of the player. Starting with Ludum Dare 37 where we launched a bare-bones version of the game we’ve been hard at work turning it into what it was meant to be:

An RPG horror that puts you in the shoes of a man who tortures people for a living and has to fight to preserve his own waning sanity.

The Story
You are the new Royal Executioner. Your father, who you’ve succeeded on this post, was beheaded for treason by the mercy of His Majesty the King. He was a lucky man. Normally he would’ve been hanged, quartered and drawn.

Now it’s your job to get confessions from criminals and execute them in front of a crowd craving a bloody spectacle.

People see you as an agent of Death which makes you feared and despised in equal measure. Your own perception however due to a peculiar mutation is both very clear and bizarre — you can not only tell lies from the truth, but sense things normal people can’t.

It’s a useful but dangerous gift — people have been burned at the stake for smaller things.

And if that wasn’t enough the world around you is ripping at the seams. The King occupies the throne yet the borders are besieged by rival armies. Young science emerges out of medieval ignorance yet doctors still buy bodies supplied by the gallows (and you) to study their anatomy. And somewhere on the fringes of the city sacrifices are still being made to appease ancient gods.

If you listen closely there’s whispers all over the city: revolution is almost upon us.

Thу world is changing. Will it drag you with it, helpless and screaming? Will you break under the pressure of your grim duty? Or will you become an avatar of that great change yourself?

That’s up to you really.

Unless you share your father’s fate. Or go mad. Or kill yourself. Or get devoured by an angry mob because the quartering you performed didn’t have enough zest.

Rest in Peace: Andrew Bonime

We only just found out that Andrew Bonime, the producer of the 1984 horror film C.H.U.D., passed away in late March after a long battle with medical issues just three days before his 69th birthday, according to Crystal Lake Publishing. The publishing company is currently finishing a C.H.U.D. tribute anthology that will feature an interview with Bonime. It is due for release later this year.

While C.H.U.D. was the last film that Bonime produced (also the second), he was still heavily involved in Hollywood in the years following the B-horror film’s release. For a time, he was Vice President of Motion Pictures and TV for superstar Diana Ross and he founded Cloudshine Global Music, which released the 2007 album Somewhere in This Room that Bonime wrote with vocalist Laura Pursell.

We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family.

Guest Post: Prep for Stranger Things Season 2 with a Movie Reference List by Author Gary Scott Beatty

Earlier this month Wounds author Gary Scott Beatty was kind enough to provide us with a list of his Top 8 Most Clever Zombie Movies, and now he’s back with a movie reference list for Netflix’s popular series “Stranger Things.”

Graphic novel Wounds is now available on Amazon and Comixology; be sure to grab a copy after checking out Gary’s list below.

In “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer explored what made horror and sci-fi unique 30 years ago. Spielberg and Lucas did the same thing in the ’70s, resurrecting ’40s movie tropes that hadn’t been seen in cynical Hollywood for some time.

What I learned from “Stranger Things,” Netflix’s breakout hit from last year, isn’t just that quotes from late 1970’s/early 1980’s  movies are fun; I also discovered most current movies have lost that sense of child-like wonder. Remember when we were wowed by concepts, not just things blowin’ up real good?

Tight writing, characters to cheer for, stand-out performances, and a finale that will blow you away make “Stranger Things” Season 1 a must-see for sci-fi and horror fans. Let’s hope they can keep up the excitement for Season 2, coming to Netflix in October on Halloween night.

Great storytelling is important to me, but we all must agree the old movie references made “Stranger Things” fun, from the Korinna typeface in the logo (did we really once think that font was a modern look?) to artist Kyle Lambert’s homage to 1970’s/80’s painted movie posters to Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein’s moody synthesizers in the creepy soundtrack.

Thanks to modern tech, we can all enjoy the movies “Stranger Things” quotes without having to slip a cassette into the VHS player. Here is my “Stranger Things” movie reference list; if you can think of others, be sure to add them in the comments below.

Jaws (1975)
Carrie (1976)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Alien (1979)
The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Altered States (1980)
The Fog (1980)
Scanners (1981)
The Evil Dead (1981)
E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
Poltergeist (1982)
The Thing (1982)
The Last Starfighter (1984)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Body Double (1984)
Firestarter (1984)
The Goonies (1985)
Stand by Me (1986)
Predator (1987)

Wounds Synopsis:
Wounds throws us into a world where nothing is beyond doubt, except a father’s concern for his wife and daughter. If you enjoy that “What th-?” factor in graphic novels, you’ll enjoy Wounds.

Exclusive: Vera Miao on Crafting a Horror Series Around Two Sentence Horror Stories

$

At this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Stage 13 premiered the first episode of their upcoming horror anthology series “Two Sentence Horror Stories”. As the describe it, the show is inspired, “…by the viral fan fiction of two sentence horror stories, this series taps into universal primal fears — death, abandonment, and loneliness — filtered through the anxieties of the most connected and racially diverse generation.

The Reddit phenomenon of two sentence horror stories quickly became a viral sensation as micro-story after micro-story aimed to scare and terrify readers with a setup and twist. And while these stories clearly laid out enough information for the reader to understand why they were so harrowing, they obviously left themselves open enough for interpretation and imagination. Our minds were allowed to go wild, crafting a narrative that not only led up to the events that we just read but gave us the opportunity to ponder the ramifications of the conclusion. A good horror ending is one that haunts us long after we read it, which is why it’s so important to make sure that everything leading up to that moment gives it as much impact as possible.

For writer/director Vera Miao, “Two Sentence Horror Stories” is a place where imaginations can run wild, where two simple lines of text can be the foundation for a story that delves into the most primal and basic of universal fears.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to speak with Miao recently about her show. Below you can read our interview, which tackles the origins of the series, what themes we might see in future episodes, how the show addresses the concerns and fears of today’s society, and more. Head on down to give it a read.

For more information about “Two Sentence Horror Stories”, head on over to Stage 13’s official website.

Dread Central: So I wanted to ask a bit about that concept of taking that viral sensation of Two Sentence Horror Stories and turning it into this series. How did that idea come about?

Vera Miao: I’ve been following the phenomenon and literally it comes from being a fan. It’s a completely provocative challenge, “Can you write a horror story in two sentences?”, and I just had a great time reading them, the creativity behind them. I really love that, in a certain kind of way, they seem really old fashioned. Meanwhile, it was made possible by new technology, a special community of Reddit, [where] it became viral, so I like the kind of mash up. There’s something gothic about the stories but then having it intersect with new technology, there’s just something about it that I got really fascinated with and honestly I thought, “Well, this is great!”

You know what it is, I’m going to say this Jonathan, you read a horror story and in two sentences, particularly the really good ones, and your brain just starts immediately working, starts filling in the gap and building a story out of these two first provocative lines. What I was doing was, I was thinking naturally as a fan, this was amazing and as a filmmaker this could be your story, your script. This is an anthology series that would also kind of reflect my love of really classic and traditional love of horror, updated though, if that makes sense.

DC: I love how you spoke about this kind of mix of the classic mentality of horror stories versus this new digital trend because it has given so many people a voice that they normally don’t have. So I’m curious, when you look at these stories, you see these ones that are making their way around, what do you look for in them to feel that it’s good enough for an adaptation?

VM: Well, I can say that the horror stories used in this series are original, though it’s hard because I think we all inspire each other. I know there’s a million horror stories, tremendous horror stories around mirrors and, when I was reading them, it’s wasn’t because we’re kind of ripping off of each other, mirrors are such a classic and creepy sort of thing, it’s an easy thing to try and convey in two sentences. The Two Sentence Horror Stories that I as a fan and a reader really respond to, they do the setup in the first sentence and the twist in the second, but they do it in such a way that they’re using sort of universal elements that scare all of us, the dark, something in a mirror, something that starts moving when it shouldn’t be moving, all of those universal things.

So, in a sort of literary way, it kind of does the thing that great horror movies do, have a shot on a really dark corner and hold that shot for a really long time and your mind starts to fill in what’s in that dark corner, even though the shot isn’t changing. It’s the dread and the anticipation and the open-endedness of it that has your brain starting to create answers. The setup and the twist are inventive and you’re kind of marveling at the genius of it, but then it’s so open-ended that it makes you focus on the concept and then your brain does all the work for you, trying to imagine what all this is.

DC: I tend to agree and it’s interesting that you mention the first sentence sets up the story and the second sentence is what offers the twist and yet, at least in my opinion, the stories that have less to say are the ones where the twist will set off my imagination, not only everything leading up to the twist but then everything that comes afterwards.

VM: Yes, exactly. Literally, what you just said right now is the kernel of the original theme to how this series came about because I would do that! I would sit there and, exactly what you said, spend some time thinking about what led up to this moment that’s captured in the two sentences and then my brain would go on what’s happening next. I would see it visually and that’s when I’d think, “This is a film”. I don’t know about you when you read them but they’re just so much fun to read, they really are, and at the end of the day I’m a fan of horror but I’m a believer in finding joy in whatever you’re doing, even in content and grit.

So I would read these stories and I had such a blast reading them and I kept wanting to read more, like, “Oh, I’m going to get that feeling again!” And that kind of excitement that clicked in was also another reason why I did this because these are great content for film because, again, we can update the material, we can update the content to be reflective of the moment of the time that we’re in, but there’s still this kernel of classic ickiness that I just feel, to a certain degree, it makes me feel like a child again, which I loved.”

DC: The first episode was told in a very humane way. It came from a place of understanding and I don’t want to say humility but I want to say it comes from a place of humanity. The way that I saw it there was no, for lack of a better word, agenda being pushed. It was simply a snapshot of two people that start talking, they find out more about each other and they go from there. It felt very normal, very every day, which is something I really appreciated.

VM: I would say that as a filmmaker, as a woman of color, as an Asian American woman I’m very much interested as a filmmaker in how the stories I tell really contribute in some small way to pushing representation in front of and behind the camera. I’ve been very explicit about that, make no bones about that, but I’m not interested in a message film. I’m interested in making material where as you said, what you were responding to is the normalcy, the humanity, the day to dayness of the characters.

DC: I love that earlier you brought up this concept of universal fears. What kinds of tales can we expect to see, what fears will we experience, with the rest of “Two Sentence Horror Stories”?

VM: So for me, I love that you said that because in the Two Sentence Horror Stories, the universal fears are the universal way we experience fear, the dark mirrors, the unknown, and then I think that’s a reflection of the stories in the series that are also dealing with universal fears but I would say they are universal primal fears. Death, but for me not just death but loss, grief, abandonment, loneliness and, a really big one for me, being helpless. So I feel like if I was to just do the kinds of things that scare me the most I would do those.

If I’m being completely personal and honest, being alone is one of my biggest fears and what I love about horror is that really, that is one of the central themes of almost every single horror tale ever told. You’re alone, you’re alone in the dark, you’re alone facing the beast, you are alone in the sense that you are trapped in some way, incapacitated in such a way that you are bearing witness to all of these things that are about to happen but you can’t do anything about it.

Others are about coveting what someone else has and the length to which a person might go to in order to get that. Other episodes deal with, being so excited with something that you’re doing that you go far beyond the boundaries of what you should do and what are the consequences of that, and all of it is animated by this feeling of helplessness, of being alone but also that each episode deals with, I hope that when folks watch it they see them also as meditations on issues that we’re dealing with and confronting now. Racism, the focus on beauty and beauty standards, how far technology goes and is that too far, the world of internet trolling, law is obviously dealing with a host of issues, particularly what it feels like to be an outsider, particularly when you’re a child or immigrant, living in other cultures, dealing with internalized homophobia, and fear, about who you truly are and living life in the light and then of course, very much being abandoned, so each episode is trying to grapple with all of those things at the same time and the thing about horror is that you can, it has the ability to shift through all of those levels at the same time.

Michael Fassbender Talks Returning as David and Becoming Walter for Alien: Covenant

We first met Michael Fassbender as the android David in Prometheus, and he’s returning to the role for Alien: Covenant along with playing new character Walter. We recently chatted with Fassebender about reprising David, introducing us to Walter, and lots more so read on for our full interview!

Alien: Covenant (review) premieres in theaters everywhere on May 19th.

Dread Central: How much more do we get to know David this time?

Michael Fassbender: You know, as much as we can do, for sure. I guess the thing is we haven’t seen him in ten years and he’s been without maintenance for ten years so yeah, let’s see what he’s all about.

DC: Is it interesting to come back to this character?

MF: For sure, I had a lot of fun with him in Prometheus, he’s a fun character so it was a joy to bring him back and to of course work with Ridley again on it, it was a really special treat. I loved it, we had a lot of fun, as we did on Prometheus.

DC: Does David have a different look from the other character you play?

MF: Yeah, there is a bit of a difference I guess but the makeup I think was the same. I kind of lost my head in the first one. I don’t know but maybe there’ll be some sort of closure, I don’t know.

DC: What’s the difference between the two robots?

MF: David has rhythm, Walter doesn’t.

DC: What is it audiences like about being scared and what’s this curiosity of unknown?

MF: Well, I think as human beings we’ve always been drawn to the stars and what’s out there, we see that from cave drawings, from hundreds or thousands of years ago, because it’s always been there. What exists up there? As human beings in terms of explorers we started off again to set out on ships and explore the planet that we live in, so the next phase of course is what’s up there? Now of course, with the reality that we’re killing this planet that we’re living on, that we might have to find somewhere else to go is another reality, so I think space has always been fascinating for us, and the idea of other civilizations, what exists out there?

DC: How did you find your footing with these characters?

MF: I guess every time you approach a character, I suppose, in a way because it’s an unknown entity until you start to work on it and then it’s still an unknown entity until you get on set and present it to everybody and sometimes it will remain unknown until you fucking wrap. I always think there’s, Steve McQueen used to say, filming is like walking around, hand in hand, sort of in a dark room, feeling your way around the furniture, trying not to bump into it, and that’s kind of a good analogy I guess.

DC: Do you live in this one?

MF: Well, I can’t tell you that, can I? Did you see the footage? I had this little shaving accident. So you know, there’s a bit of a challenge for both of the robots.

DC: What did they use as an eyeline for you?

MF: That could be a mixture between some sort of you know, not animatronics thing but kind of or, some dude dressed up in a massive sock. But I have to say on a Ridley film, you get absolutely spoiled. I mean, when I first came on the set of Prometheus that was the first thing that struck me, you’re on a spaceship, you’re walking around the deck of a spaceship and then again, when they arrive on the planet there’s huge massive heads, it’s all there to be interactive with, to touch, to engage in and that’s a real treat, especially nowadays with CGI. A lot of the times with genre films we’ll be in a warehouse with a green screen so Ridley I guess, he’s a very visual person obviously and he likes to create these worlds and it’s a real treat. The look of the alien is just you know, and I think when Ridley was introduced to his work through the writer of Alien I believe, he was like this is it, we don’t have to do anything, this is the alien because it’s beautiful but also something very brutal and intrusive and so then he created the idea of the base ships that they would fly so he’s there, it’s intrinsic in the actual alien itself, but the world too.

DC: Why does the word itself, “alien,” scare us?

MF: Well, I think history has taught us that we’re a bit weird when anything different comes into our parameters or our lives, we’re just fearful of different things and that fear can manifest itself in different forms which can be very dangerous but yeah, I think human beings just have this aversion or fear towards the unknown.

DC: What did you draw from for David and Walter?

MF: I guess originally with David there was some of David Bowie, the Man Who Fell to Earth, there was Greg Louganis, the Olympic high diver and then of course there were elements of Peter O’Toole, so it was kind of bringing him back to life again… there was something about Spock that I thought was kind of interesting, that he had such a logic sort of mind, I thought I could take something from that.

DC: Is one character much more robotic than the other?

MF: Yeah, I think the prototype, which David was, freaked people out a bit because of those human traits so they were like okay, you know, let’s just keep them as robots.

DC: Do you enjoy all the travel your job requires?

MF: I love traveling, I’m a mongrel, German, Irish, whatever, I’ve sort of travelled all over the place, I love that about my job and I really enjoy experiencing different cultures. I’m one of those people that enjoys not having borders because it’s just a pain in the ass going through immigration anyway. But I like that the world is small and to be able to come and go, easily move from country to country, is a great privilege…

DC: What would you say was your most recent cultural awakening?

MF: I guess nature is always the thing… I feel like I have a profound connection to the planet or something like that or physically, it will have an effect on me. Off the top of my head Peru, maybe. I didn’t actually go to Machu Picchu but I did a road trip of about five thousand kilometers from Lima down to Cusco and back again.

DC: Third time around, what did you learn about Ridley in this movie?

MF: You know, I think there’s so much there to the man but really it’s the joy that he experiences when he’s working, he’s happiest on a movie set. I would have to say on this one, of the three films we’ve done, he just seemed to really be having a good time. We’ve always had a good time filming together, I suppose the first thing that surprised me about Ridley was how much fun he is, that was the first thing that struck me on Prometheus and how mischievous he is. There’s a great childlike quality to him and what I mean by that is he finds the wonder in things still, he gets excited by that and that’s great to keep that enthusiasm and that childlike nature alive in oneself, I think that’s really important. The fact that he’s talking about shooting big films, small films, shooting these big films is really difficult, it’s like steering an ocean liner, they’re such big beasts and there’s so many moving parts but when we shoot with Ridley it’s like shooting an independent, it moves so fast and has that same intimate feeling you have on a smaller film. He shoots both actors at the same time, a lot of times he shoots with four or five cameras at the same time. I like that because you move fast and I like it when you have some speed and momentum going and also it’s nice when both actors are engaged in the same take, it’s like camera’s on you, camera’s on me and we’re in this moment together because of course a lot of the times they’ll film you and then turn around and film me and things can change in that time, maybe two, three hours later the camera turns around on me or you and things have changed in that time, so it’s nice to have the immediacy to capture the moment then, together. Of course, that’s difficult for a DP, that’s why Darius is so amazing because he can light the whole room and allow Ridley to shoot that way.

DC: What’s the wonderment appeal of working with Ridley?

MF: I think the job allows people to remain young, for good and bad, it allows you to sort of behave like a child somewhat because number one, it doesn’t require it but I think it helps to have that imaginative sort of playfulness and you just get to travel around, go to places, learn different things so yeah, the childlike quality, I would say I’ve retained that.

DC: Any cool childlike fun moments?

MF: I think it was more on Prometheus, walking around the ship, those scenes that I did at the beginning of the movie where I’m sort of looking after the ship alone, that was just one of those moments. That was the main impact for me because it was the first time working with Ridley, he was such a hero to me and I was not only working with him but working on the Alien franchise and walking around a spaceship. It’s not to say oh, it’s old hat to me no, but that first impression was a very strong one and you know, having done lots of films in between, coming back to Ridley there’s an easiness in working with him, it’s just a joy. Sometimes it can be quite taxing, there’s elements at play with people that you’re working with that are off sync maybe, or perhaps you don’t find that confidence at the top that you find with Ridley, he’s got that confidence and clarity and is a great collaborator so actually it’s a very easy experience. Those pinching moments, they happen a lot on his set and again, it’s a very rare thing to have them there around you like that and to be able to exist in them. I think any of the actors, we would have moments where we’d say wow, we’re on an Alien film with Ridley Scott, I’m sure that’s sort of a daily occurrence, I remember that first impression and how strong that was.

DC: What is your first memory of the sci-fi horror genre?

MF: I remember seeing Alien for the first time and it scared me, I remember thinking something else is happening. It’s funny when art or again nature, something, you know when you get affected physically by something, and it’s not an intellectual thing, it’s affected you physically, that’s a very strong feeling and I remember that from watching the Alien film. I also loved Star Wars as a kid, it was a big thing for me and I collected all the parts so yeah, that was part of my childhood for sure.

DC: Why do people keep coming back to the Alien franchise?

MF: I think it’s like we were saying earlier, people like to get a good fright, for whatever reasons, to get the adrenaline pumping and then the concept of other civilizations has always interested us. But I guess what’s pretty unique about the Alien franchise, and what’s disturbing about, is the fact that these aliens use us as hosts, so they grow inside of us and there’s something about that I think takes it to the next level.

DC: We saw a scene in a sandstorm that looks pretty intense…

MF: Yeah, they’re annoying because lots of shit gets in your eyes and stuff. It’s cool, it’s great and then of course there’s a lot of money involved so you have to make sure you’re doing your job, so there is that element, the professional side of it. There was a big rainfall as well, and the set got flooded for a few days.

DC: Any interest in doing smaller, independent movies after this?

MF: Yeah, just good stories. I don’t think I’m going to do anything for a while, I’m going to chill out a bit but nothing changes for me. I do a big film if I find that I’m drawn to it, it’s interesting or a small one as well.

Synopsis:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise but is actually a dark, dangerous world. Exclusive: Carlos Gallardo, Kevin Eastman, and Chee Keong Cheung on the Zombie Action Martial Arts Film REDCON-1

$

When you’ve got a film that’s produced by Carlos Gallardo (El Mariachi, Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) and Kevin Eastman (co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, editor/publisher of “Heavy Metal” magazine), it’s a film that you pay attention to. That kind of caliber and creativity doesn’t team up on an independent feature all too often, so when it does, there’s a certain obligation to at least keep it on your radar. That film, my friends, is REDCON-1.

Directed by Chee Keong Cheung (Underground, Bodyguard: A New Beginning), the film follows, “A squad of eight Special Forces soldiers [who] are assigned a suicide mission to rescue a scientist from a city ruled by the undead.” Shot in the UK, the film promises to bring a mix of action, horror, and martial arts to the table.

I got the chance to speak with Cheung, Gallardo, and Eastman about the film while also getting several exclusive images. You can see everything below.

REDCON-1 stars Martyn Ford, Katarina Waters, Akira Koieyama, Oris Erhuero, Joshua Dickinson, Euan Macnaughton, Mark Strange, Marc Baylis, and Michael Sheehan. There is no confirmed release date as of yet.

It was really an awesome meeting of the minds that was incidental,” Kevin Eastman, who acts as an executive producer on REDCON-1, tells me, regarding how the project launched. “We all have a mutual friend, Digger Mesch, who, whenever possible, would try to get a bunch of people together for dinner that he thought would hit it off. Digger invited Chee, Carlos, and I and we all just started talking about things that we love. We all just sort of hit it off.” Laughing, he adds, “It was like, ‘You’re awesome and you’re awesome and you’re awesome! Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could all be awesome together?’

Clearly both Eastman and Carlos Gallardo, who not only executive produces but also stars as SGT Frederick Reeves, see something in writer/director Chee Keong Cheung. Gallardo offers a rather impressive comparison, saying, “We got along right away because he reminds me of Robert [Rodriguez] a lot.” That vision saw Gallardo take an interest in giving Cheung a chance at something really special.

It was Chee that, first of all, I saw a director that, if nourished enough and supported enough, he could become a great Hollywood studio director. A lot of people need that break. That was one of the the first things that attracted me to working with him. Then he reminded me of Robert in the way we used to work and we used to create. He loves action and we came to the conclusion that when you do action low budget, what you need is time. If you get enough time, you get those shots that compete with the studio movies,” Gallardo explains.

Eastman connected with the director and his independent mentality, adding, “Chee felt very strongly that the way to maintain his vision with REDCON-1 was to do it independently. Having started out as a self-published independent comic, we linked up mentally.” No stranger to how films are made, Eastman comments, “I’ve been around enough directors to know that when you’re amidst the chaos and Chee is standing in the middle of it saying ‘I’ve got it, it’s under control’, that’s infectious.

Cheung doesn’t take this kind of praise lightly. During our interview, I lost track of how many times he used the word “humbling”, which he meant every time he said it. He knows that making a film like this is no easy task and that having people behind you means everything. “The support of Carlos, Kevin, Shaked [Berenson] and Patrick [Ewald] over at Epic, the overall feeling was ‘Let’s try and make this as big as possible’. That, of course, does pose challenges but the support of everyone made it all possible,” he related.

But what does the movie bring new to the table? After all, we’ve all seen horror that blends various genres. Resident Evil added in sci-fi and martial arts. Deathwatch brought in the war element. What makes REDCON-1 stand out to these three?

Cheung knows that horror fans have seen it before, which is why he purposefully aimed to bring something different to the table, saying, “I wanted to take the story of a viral outbreak and take this premise, which is quite familiar with audiences, and add a little bit of a spin to it.” He continues, “I was always fascinated by war films and I directed a few small, indie action/martial arts films. I thought a fusion of the genres, action, war, martial arts, we could do something quite cool and interesting that could be really unique on screen. I wanted to make something for genre fans, that was the aim.

Gallardo, whose work in the action genre cannot be denied, sees something special about REDCON-1. “It’s a zombie movie with martial arts and a different type of action, a different type of genre that I’ve seen. I saw a little bit of Saving Private Ryan with Black Hawk Down in a zombie world,” he put forward.

For Eastman, he acknowledges the delicate balance that can go awry if not handled carefully. “To me, it was a difficult nut to crack the use of the martial arts as a concept within the horror stuff, which I think he’s done wonderfully. It’s grounding it and making it an important part of the story rather than including it because we think it’d look cool,” he states.

He then adds, “I remember going to the drive-in theater when I was a kid and seeing movies like Night of the Living Dead and I’ve been passionate about zombies and mutated characters since. You always look for something that takes the concept deeper. It’s been done often enough that, how many different things can you do with a zombie? I just felt that what Chee wanted to, with mixing genres…I like the detail, the depth. Chee really thought it through. The multiple genres, the fearlessness of Chee to try take this on and make it what it is and what it’s going to be is fantastic.

Cheung knows that blending multiple genres into one film can be a challenge, but it’s one he’s thrilled to have undertaken. “The film does take inspiration from a lot of films within the genre. We ground the film in a sense of reality. At the heart, at the core, it’s a human story. It’s about the obstacles that these characters encounter and face. I think the aim is to try for audiences to go on a roller coaster ride and go on an adventure.

Live Action Tokyo Ghoul Movie Gets a Killer New Poster and Pair of Trailers

The fate of the anime series may be up in the air, but fans of the Tokyo Ghoul manga series can look forward to the upcoming live action film, which hits Japanese screens on June 29.

Two brief teaser trailers have been released for the film, and aside from a few minor differences here and there, they’re mostly identical. Have a look for yourself and decide which one you prefer below.

Masataka Kubota stars as Ken Kaneki, the college student transformed into a bloodthirsty ghoul after a life saving operation leaves him with ghoul organs implanted into his body. Masataka Kubota, Fumika Shimizu, Yū Aoi and Nobuyuki Suzuki also star, whilst Kentarô Hagiwara directs.

In addition to the poster released back in December, distributor Shochiku have revealed a killer new one sheet which I think really captures Kaneki’s struggle to hold on to his humanity as his monstrous side threatens to take over.

B&B (2017)

Starring Tom Bateman, Sean Teale, Callum Woodhouse

Directed by Joe Ahearne

Discrimination against one’s race, color, creed or sexual preference is a damning transgression that unfortunately seems to be gaining speed, even in this day and age, and in director Joe Ahearne’s latest film, B & B, the act of partiality and ignorance plays a heavy role, fueling a slow-burning thriller, Hitchcock-style. Step on in, cause I’m fairly sure this country inn won’t have the most glowing reviews on a trip-inspection site.

Fred and Marc (Teale and Bateman) are a happily united gay couple in London, and after winning a lawsuit against a discriminatory inn owner, they’ve returned one year later for a relaxing weekend…and maybe just to rub a little salt in the wound as well. Josh (Paul McGann), the inn’s owner, isn’t at all happy about the return of the duo and he’s taken a bit of a precautionary measure: removing ALL of the cottage’s double-beds – the tit-for-tat parcels are in order, but the loving couple has no idea what’s really in store for them. With the inclusion of Josh’s son (Woodhouse), a man who’s got some serious fatherly points of contention, and a Russian stranger who has a stare that could shatter a cinder block, it’s apparent that this convergence of personalities under this roof will all meter up to some trouble, and murder just might be on the menu.

The story does take a bit of time to ramp up, but it has its method of construction – you can feel the revulsion towards the twosome’s lifestyle from Josh, and it’s of a most palpable nature. Ahearne effectively uses the intolerance-factor to act as the backbone of this film, and it works to a frightening level. The performances from all actors under this production give off real-life portrayals of people facing adversities of their existences – I’ve always felt that the conveyance of a particular story can only be strengthened if the characters you’re watching could reel in an audience by their actions, and this film pulls it off nicely. If there were a downside to this film (and some might find it to be a hindrance), it would be the extremely slow-moving pace, however if you want tense, tightly-wrought dramatic celluloid, then B & B is the rest-stop you should be paying a visit to – make sure to give this one a look when it becomes available.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the stars of the 2004 horror comedy Shaun of the Dead, have announced that they have formed their own TV and film production company Stolen Picture. Their first project, according to Deadline will be Slaughterhouse Rulez, which will see Frost and Pegg acting as executive producers with Crispian Mills directing based on a script he co-wrote with Henry Fitzherbert.

Synopsis:
Slaughterhouse Rulez is set in an elite boarding school – Welcome to Slaughterhouse – where boys and girls are groomed for power and greatness and they’re about to meet their match. The story’s hero, Don Wallace, is a wide-eyed new boy from a modest background forced to navigate a baffling new world of arcane rules and rituals, presided by sadistic sixth formers. Matters of status are aggressively enforced and conversation with school goddess Clemsie, are strictly forbidden.

But this ancient and ordered world is about to be shaken to its foundations – literally – when a controversial frack site on prize school woodland causes seismic tremors, a mysterious sinkhole and an unspeakable horror is unleashed. Soon a new pecking order will be established as pupils, teachers and the school matron become locked in a bloody battle for survival.

No word on when production will kick off or a proposed release date. However, knowing that these two will be back to creating horror comedies is something I’m very excited for! Shaun of the Dead has become a classic of the genre and I know that their brand of humor will lend itself to some wonderful possibilities!
