Does the Mythic Alien Box Scene Actually Exist?

0
0

The Alien franchise is one of the most iconic in genre cinema, and while recent entry Covenant doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by the original, few horror movies do. Like any long-running series, there have been numerous proposed storylines and abandoned concepts over the years, with Alien 3 alone burning through multiple directors and concepts, such as Vincent Ward’s unique “Wooden Planet” idea.

The series also has a number of fascinating deleted scenes, such as Fifield’s alternate mutation from Prometheus, the Cocooned Burke scene from Aliens and the egg morphing sequence from Alien. These scenes may vary in quality, but they all provide a unique look at how each film developed and the concepts that got thrown out along the way.

The egg morphing scene, in particular, adds a unique wrinkle to the xenomorph’s lifecycle that hasn’t been seen in the franchise since, but it’s an idea fans love to speculate on. Thanks to the advent of Special Edition DVDs and the Internet, there’s little fans don’t already know about the series, down to unfilmed scenes and behind-the-scenes info.

Major fans of the original will no doubt have heard of the “Alien Box” sequence, where Ripley encounters a strange looking box while running for the escape pod in the finale, which then unfurls to reveal the Alien has twisted itself into an impossible shape. It would have made for a unique jump scare, but the only place it’s possible to see this moment is in the comic adaptation Alien: The Illustrated Story.

Alien Box Deleted Scene

Since no set pictures or footage of such a sequence has ever been shown, it seems safe to assume it wasn’t filmed.

Except that Walter Simonson – who was responsible for the gorgeous art of the book – swears it was included in a workprint of Alien he watched prior to drawing the comic. He thought it looked cool but got the impression others watching the film weren’t as impressed, but he included it anyway.

So is it possible Scott filmed a version of the scene that was then purged from existence? Again, it’s unlikely that if it was shot, there’d be no sign of it in the various Special Editions or making-of books. Maybe Simonson is misremembering the early cut he saw, possibly confusing it with another deleted moment where the creature crab walks over to Lambert.

It’s possible the scene was at least attempted. Bolaji Badejo – the performer in the Alien outfit – spoke in an interview of how Ridley Scott was always pushing what was possible with the costume, and deleted footage like the crab walk and a scene where it hangs from chains before attacking Brett shows Scott planned to make the creature more active. In the final edit he keeps it to the shadows mostly, to add mystery and mask its limits.

There are also numerous shots of the beast hunched over in promo photos and behind-the-scenes clips, which some fans feel is evidence the Box scene was attempted. The image clearly stuck with the director too since it reappears in Prometheus when the mutated Fifield returns to the ship in a twisted over shape.

If the scene does exist, it’s unlikely it will resurface now, either because it’s lost or maybe Scott is embarrassed by how it turned out, and will likely remain a mythological missing sequence like the unseen alternate ending to Cube or the Brussels Cut of Ring.

That said, another long-missing scene that was said not to exist at all – the original ending to Poltergeist III – was recently discovered, so maybe there’s a faint hope the “Alien Box” scene will see the light someday.

A new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming monster adventure film Okja has been released and it finally reveals what the titular creature looks like. Basically, it’s a hippo mixed with a pig and it’s pretty damn large. The movie also looks kinda like a live-action Studio Ghibli film, which I see as a good thing!

Australia’s Dicentium Films and Canada’s Unstable Ground have teamed up to adapt Michale Prescott’s cult horror novel Kane into a feature film, which will go by the name Mark of Kane. The film is set to shoot later this year and will be directed by Serhat Caradee (Cedar Boys, Hunters) based on a screenplay by Serena Whitney and Justin McConnell.

Adam Mason (Hangman, Blood River, The Devil’s Chair), and George Mihalka (My Bloody Valentine, 24 Hour Rental) will be acting as consulting producers.

Synopsis:
Kane is a force of nature. Walking out of the desert into the dying town of Tuskett, which only 23 people still call home, he has only one purpose: to kill every resident. Relentless, stealthy, and without mercy, Kane won’t stop until every last man, woman and child is nothing but a memory. Soon the surviving townspeople must band together to fight this seemingly-unstoppable evil, or die trying. Brutal, action-packed, and most importantly, character-driven, Mark of Kane is a thrilling story of survival at any cost.

Go Into the Stunning Stop-Motion World of Phil Tippett’s Mad God

To this day, the name Phil Tippett is associated with a rather humorous internet meme. But while people may mock his job title on Jurassic Park, Tippett should be recognized for the incredible visual effects work he’s done over the years on projects like Star Wars, RoboCop, Piranha, Starship Troopers, and more.

In a new video, Great Big Story interviewed Tippett about his work over the years and his passion project Mad God, which mixes live-action with stop-motion. Supposedly, this is something Tippett has been working on for over 30 years!

I really recommend checking out the video below because it shows an insight into an astonishing mind, one that lives in a world of imagination and wonder and is capable of realizing them in our reality.

Gorge Yourself on Fine Food and Drink With These Twin Peaks Recipes

It cannot be denied that the world of “Twin Peaks” is a place both strange and wonderful. Full of charming characters, mysteriously beautiful locations, and an engaging story, it’s a world that will never fail to draw me in. On top of those qualities, it also makes me hungry as hell because of its consistent and perfect use of food throughout the series.

Two of my favorite channels on YouTube (you’ll probably have noticed by now that my favorite YouTube channels are food-related) teamed up to bring two fantastic recipes for “Twin Peaks”-inspired treats. The first is Binging with Babish, who recreated Agent Coopers breakfast special of pancakes, ham, and coffee. The second is Cocktail Chemistry, who created the Black Yukon Sucker Punch cocktail that was ordered by Judge Sternwood in the second season of the show.

Check out both below and then let me know your favorite food item from “Twin Peaks” in the comments!

The 18-part limited event series “Twin Peaks” will debut with a two-part premiere on Sunday, May 21st, at 9PM ET/PT. Immediately following the premiere, Showtime subscribers will have access to the third and fourth parts, exclusively across the network’s streaming service, SHOWTIME ANYTIME, and SHOWTIME ON DEMAND. In its second week, “Twin Peaks” will air the third and fourth parts back-to-back on the linear network, starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT, followed by one-hour parts in subsequent weeks.

About “Twin Peaks”:
The critically-acclaimed television phenomenon “TWIN PEAKS” returns as a limited series to Showtime on May 21, 2017. “TWIN PEAKS” is written and produced by series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost and is directed entirely by David Lynch.

While the full mystery awaits, fans can expect many familiar faces, including Golden Globe winner and Emmy Award nominee Kyle MacLachlan, who reprises his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, plus Lynch as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole.

Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential broadcast series of all time, “TWIN PEAKS” followed the inhabitants of a quaint Northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, was shockingly murdered. The town’s sheriff welcomed the help of FBI agent Dale Cooper, who came to town to investigate the case. As Cooper conducted his search for Laura’s killer, the town’s secrets were gradually exposed. The mystery that ensued set off an eerie chain of events that plunged the inhabitants of Twin Peaks into a darker examination of their very existence. Twenty-five years later, the story continues…

$149 Million Budget Game Star Citizen Gets a Stunning New Development Diary

0
0

A few days ago, developer and publisher Cloud Imperium Games released the latest monthly developer diary for their gigantic space exploration game Star Citizen. Check it out below.

Directed by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, Star Citizen raised an incredible $149 million through crowdfunding, making it one of the biggest budget games of all time. To put that number into perspective, Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect: Andromeda cost $47 million and $40 million respectively, both of which were considered to be huge AAA productions. Star Citizen has a larger budget than both of them combined, so this is one absolutely gigantic game.

As you explore Star Citizen’s huge galaxy, you’ll come face to face with some horrific creatures, including the giant worm monsters in the videos below. Interestingly, xenolinguistics specialist Britton Watkins, who worked on Star Trek Into Darkness, helped to create the languages spoken by the sentient alien races you’ll be encountering, such as the warlike Vanduul (pictured at the bottom of the page).

Both space combat and ground-based first-person shooting will also play a large role, and this video pretty much confirms that the game will be rated M by the ESRB. The gameplay snippet in a derelict spacecraft below also shows off some of the more creepy aspects of Star Citizen, and to me it almost seems like it has a kind of Dead Space vibe.

In addition to the open world component, Star Citizen will also include a story driven single-player campaign called Squadron 42, which will feature a huge A-list voice cast including Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Rhona Mitra, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Strong, Jack Huston, John Rhys-Davies, Liam Cunningham, and Harry Treadaway.

I never thought I’d see the day when a crowdfunded game could be classed as AAA, but Star Citizen more than fits the bill. Because it’s such an expansive and technologically advanced game, a console release is unlikely (Roberts has stated that he will not allow it to be dumbed down to work on less powerful platforms), so we can assume that it will be exclusive to PC unless future consoles have the horsepower to run it successfully. Either way, you can stay updated with Star Citzen on its YouTube channel and Cloud Imperium’s website.

The CW Unveils 2017-18 Fall Schedule – Supernatural Stays Put; Riverdale Moves to Wednesday

0
0

It’s that time of year when we learn the upcoming fall schedules for all the major TV networks, and today it’s The CW’s turn… Have they moved “Supernatural” yet again? Is it still paired with “Riverdale”? And when will new seasons of “iZombie” and “The Originals” kick off?

For the answers to those questions and more horror highlights, read on! We also have a sizzle reel from the network to share.

Excerpts from the Press Release:
The CW presents its 2017-18 primetime schedule to advertisers, affiliates, and national media today at the New York City Center in New York City.

“The CW has transformed over the past few years, from a linear network into a true multi-platform success. Whether it’s on broadcast, on VOD, OTT, digital, or mobile, we are reaching those viewers everywhere they are, with opportunities for our advertisers across every platform,” said Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW.

“RIVERDALE” moves to a new night on Wednesday (8:00-9:00pm ET/PT), followed by the new drama “DYNASTY,” a reimagining of the classic primetime soap.

Thursday nights reunite the Winchester brothers with Team Arrow, with “SUPERNATURAL” (8:00-9:00pm ET/PT) followed by “ARROW” (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT), now on a new night.

The CW will launch its 2017-18 season in October, with premiere dates to be announced later. Midseason will see the return of “IZOMBIE” and “THE ORIGINALS.”

WEDNESDAY
8:00-9:00 PM RIVERDALE (New Night)
The first season of RIVERDALE found our characters reeling from the tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom. For many who had seen their home as perfect, safe, and innocent, the investigation into Jason’s murder peeled back the layers of their hometown to reveal a place bubbling over with secrets, mysteries, and scandals. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), for instance, grew from a sweet, all-American kid into a young man acutely aware of the darker side of life—he broke his best friend’s heart, had a forbidden relationship with his music teacher, and grappled with whether he wanted to follow in his dad’s salt-of-the-earth footsteps. On the positive side, Archie repaired his friendship with Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), found some success as a musician—thanks in part to Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) and her band, the Pussycats—and found a new romantic interest in femme fatale Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes). New to town, Veronica spent the season trying to atone for her “bad girl” past, all the while wrestling with her beloved father’s criminal legacy—and contending with a mother, Hermione (Marisol Nichols), who might not be as innocent as she claimed. Veronica became fast-friends with Archie’s girl-next-door neighbor, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), who did some growing up of her own this season. After Archie’s rejection, Betty threw herself into running the school paper, “The Blue and Gold,” where she discovered a better romantic match in sardonic outsider Jughead. Together, they tracked down Betty’s sister, Polly (guest star Tiera Skovbye), who had been sent away by their overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick). Under the guise of writing for the school paper, Betty and Jughead investigated Jason Blossom’s death—which led to them discover that Jughead’s father—FP Jones (guest star Skeet Ulrich)—was involved with covering up Jason’s murder. Meanwhile, Jason’s twin sister, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), ruled the school as Riverdale High’s venomous, merciless Red Queen—until she learned the true identity of Jason’s killer. As the town breathed a collective sigh of relief that Jason’s killer had been found out, another terrible crime occurred, in a space that had been considered one of the town’s safest, most innocent places. If Jason Blossom’s murder revealed the slimy underbelly beneath Riverdale’s surface, as we enter Season Two, the shooting of Fred Andrews threatens to plunge the entire town into utter darkness. Based on the characters from Archie Comics, RIVERDALE is from Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, in association with Berlanti Productions, with executive producers Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Supergirl,” “Glee”), Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”), Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) and Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics).

THURSDAY
8:00-9:00 PM SUPERNATURAL
The exciting journey of the Winchester brothers continues as SUPERNATURAL enters its thirteenth season. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have encountered every kind of supernatural threat, facing down monsters, demons, and gods. Saving people, hunting things, and keeping the world safe. In the show’s twelfth season, the Winchesters were reunited with their long-dead mother, and joined forces with the British arm of the Men of Letters. But things turned from bad to worse, with the return of Lucifer and the surprising revelation that the Devil is expecting a child. Now, Sam and Dean find themselves facing a creature of almost unimaginable power… one that could save the world… or destroy it. SUPERNATURAL is from Warner Bros. Television in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision, with executive producers Robert Singer (“Midnight Caller”), Andrew Dabb and Phil Sgriccia.

MIDSEASON

IZOMBIE
Olivia “Liv” Moore (Rose McIver) was a rosy-cheeked, disciplined, over-achieving medical resident who had her life path completely mapped out…until the night she attended a party that unexpectedly turned into a zombie feeding frenzy. As one of the newly undead, Liv is doing her best to blend in and look as human as possible. Based upon characters created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, and published by DC Entertainment’s Vertigo, iZOMBIE is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Spondoolie Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Rob Thomas (“Veronica Mars,” “Party Down,” “Cupid”), Diane Ruggiero-Wright (“Veronica Mars,” “The Ex List,” “That’s Life”), Danielle Stokdyk (“Veronica Mars,” “Party Down,” “Cupid”) and Dan Etheridge (“The Carrie Diaries,” “Veronica Mars,” “Party Down”).

THE ORIGINALS
Season Four of THE ORIGINALS begins on the fifth anniversary of the Mikaelson family’s greatest defeat. In the years since, the Original hybrid Klaus (Joseph Morgan) has been held prisoner by Marcel Gerard (Charles Michael Davis), while his siblings lie trapped in an enchanted sleep. When Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) finally succeeds in reviving them, the newly-awakened Mikaelsons execute a daring rescue of the captive Klaus. Once reunited, the family finds themselves faced with an even bigger threat: the revival of an ancient evil that has strong ties to their most vulnerable family member, Hope (Summer Fontana). After a devastating attack by this nightmarish entity, the Mikaelsons discover there is only one way to save themselves — they must stand their ground in New Orleans and forge an alliance with the very enemies who hate them most, both Marcel and the leader of the New Orleans witches, Vincent Griffith (Yusuf Gatewood). But as their horrifying adversary closes in, the Mikaelsons find that they are facing an evil even more powerful than themselves, one with intimate knowledge of their family’s greatest weakness. With everything at stake — their city, their family, and their very immortality — the Mikaelsons must find a way to stand together, even as their secrets threaten to tear them apart. THE ORIGINALS is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with My So-Called Company, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. Julie Plec (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Kyle XY,” “Wasteland”) and Leslie Morgenstein (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl”) are executive producers.

Exclusive: Daniel Farrands Talks The Haunting on Long Island: The Amityville Murders

The Haunting on Long Island: The Amityville MurdersWe cannot even begin to tell you how stoked we are that Daniel Farrands (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, The Haunting in Connecticut, Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers) is readying The Haunting on Long Island: The Amityville Murders for CineTel Films.

Not only is Farrands a director with a keen eye for storytelling and detail, he’s also an Amityville historian; and believe us when we tell you there are few people on earth as well versed in the Amityville saga as he. Recently we caught up with Farrands to get the scoop on the new flick…

I’m excited to tell a unique story that’s not another reboot or reimagining of The Amityville Horror — and not connected to the Lutz haunting, demonic dollhouses, possessed mirrors, or cursed theaters in any way,” Farrands tells us, adding, “This story focuses on the possible events in the days leading to the DeFeo family mass murders and the baffling mysteries that surround the case to this day.”

He also says, “It’s not a documentary or a docu-drama. It’s a domestic thriller with supernatural elements that portrays the DeFeo family as real human beings caught up in a series of events that ultimately led to their tragic demise — and unwittingly spawned a modern legend.

Farrands is set to direct from his own screenplay with production starting this summer. No other details are available, but we do have the plot crunch for you!

Synopsis:
On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr., took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial DeFeo claimed that “voices” in the house commanded him to kill.

Thirteen months later the Lutz family bought the house and stayed only 28 days before fleeing in terror. Their nightmarish ordeal shocked the world in The Amityville Horror. The Lutzes may have escaped from Amityville with their lives … but the DeFeos weren’t so lucky. This is their story.

Exclusive: Director and FX Artist Gary J. Tunnicliffe Weighs in on The Pinhead Experience

0
0

It’s been twelve years since Pinhead-originating actor Doug Bradley has worn the costume and makeup he made so cinematically famous (initially in Clive Barker’s groundbreaking 1987 film Hellraiser and later in no less than six sequels). That is set to change, however, this Friday and Saturday at Scottsdale, Arizona’s Mad Monster Party, as FX legend Tom Savini has paired with the actor in order to provide convention goers the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Cenobite.

Tickets which will allow the purchaser a quick photo op with Bradley in his hellish regalia (Kyle Roberts and Steve Tolin of Tolin FX handled the makeup, with costume recreation by Allison and Sean Boyle) are $260.00 and have already sold out for the actor’s Saturday appearance.

Of the experience, “When fans and show organizers started to ask about the possibility of a Pinhead photo op with Doug a few years back,” states an official announcement made on Bradley’s Facebook page, “we dismissed it as an impossibility. Almost nothing relating to Pinhead existed anymore. No makeup. No costume. Not even a life cast. Besides, shaking hands and “posing” for a picture with Pinhead seemed like a silly idea. The more time went on, the more the questions persisted and the more we talked about it. An idea evolved. If Pinhead can’t enter the fans’ world, how can we bring you into his? We wanted to present an experience and not just a photograph, as close to stepping on set with Doug as Pinhead as we could make it.”

An exciting moment in fandom history, to be sure, as Bradley hasn’t appeared on screen as the character since the 2005 entry Hellraiser: Hellworld, for which FX artist-turned-director Gary J. Tunnicliffe provided the makeup (Tunnicliffe began his extensive Hellraiser effects journey in 1992 on Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and continued throughout all of the subsequent sequels, the last two of which found Bradley’s character essayed by other actors, and the final, Hellraiser: Judgement, also directed by Tunnicliffe and currently awaiting release).

Related Story: Doug Bradley as Pinhead – More Details and Exclusive Pics!

So, what are Tunnicliffe’s thoughts on the Mad Monster Party return of Pinhead? He emailed us last night to convey them.

Several years ago, before Doug and I ‘fell out’ he bounced the idea of a ‘Pinhead makeup at Conventions scenario’ to me (inspired by Robert Englund, etc., doing similar ventures) and I thought then as I do now – that it was sure fire money maker and a wonderful opportunity for fans. So, I wasn’t surprised when I heard it was going ahead and obviously (since we are no longer on speaking terms) I wasn’t surprised he reached out to another makeup team to facilitate it. I’ve seen pictures and video, etc., and fielded hundreds of texts from people asking what I think of the makeup and costume, I’ve even been told some people have commented it’s the best he’s ever looked (since the original films) and it’s better than the various sequels… and so feel I have to throw my ‘two cents’ in on that.

Personally, whilst I am thrilled to see Doug wear the makeup again, I’m not impressed with the look of it nor the costume, and this is a 100% unbiased critique as an ex-makeup FX artist who created and applied this character over many years.

Post Hellseeker, we used lifts (small pieces of tape) to ‘pull up’ any sagging skin to essentially ‘youth’ Doug, and (to) take away the ‘tired’ or ‘aged’ look… looking at the life cast – that was not done – and I don’t think it’s being done in the application now… so you tend to get a ‘heavy’ look to the face.

The color seems VERY pale, we always painted the makeup a yellowy, autopsy tone and then let the lighting department add the blue color or pale him out… if you don’t do this he tends to wash out 100% which loses the depth of the cuts, etc., and we definitely strayed away from the eye shadow blue ‘racoon’ eyes. I always found a little of that goes a LONG way and you don’t want him looking like Captain Spaulding.

Doug bradley Pinhead

Regarding the costume, I’m assuming the images so far are unfinished. It looks very clean and in need of ‘age’ing down’ Ironically people always think the costume is black, (although) it’s actually a very dark brown-dark umber that reads black on camera… the arms do seem bulky (I’ve seen comments saying that) and the chest piece seems unfinished.

It’s been interesting to read some of the posts by the team involved, and I was interested to see SO many people working on the application… 99% of the time I always did it alone.

Regarding The Pinhead Experience itself, I am curious what the fans will get for their $260 (I know they get a photo and an encounter with him) – I know Doug was keen for this to NOT be just a photo op and wanted to give the people an ‘experience’ and I think that’s awesome. I mean, how cool to visit with Pinhead in his environment!?! Kudos to Doug, Steph and the team for producing that.

But if their estimate of four hours to deal with 100 ticket holders is legitimate, then (without any breaks) that’s 240 minutes – that’s 2.4 mins per ticket holder (1-4 people) and $1.62 per second?

Even a five-minute experience with him would break down as 86 cents per second – BUT that would take 8.33 hours (with NO breaks).

I’m not trying to belittle what they are doing, but ‘load in/load out’ times and ‘logistics’ are something I have had to deal with more and more designing attractions at Fright Dome in Las Vegas and it’s problematic… but I’m sure they’ll have it covered.

A note on budget, people might be quick dismiss my comments and comparisons based on our ‘huge film’ FX budgets….well, I would laugh heartily and say this:

We had $50,000.00 for ALL the effects and on set labor on Hellraiser: Inferno (that’s Pinhead, Wire Twins, Torso Chatterer, costumes, boxes and EVERYTHING else) … on HELLWORLD AND DEADER we had about $150,000.00 again for EVERYTHING – the entire FX build (labor, materials etc) and ON SET costs.

For Revelations, the FX budget was $20,000.00 to create all the effects (Pinhead, Cenobites, Boxes, Skinned FX and on set crew) …. at $260 per ticket X 100 over two days that’s $52,000.00 (total), so even just using a quarter of that is MORE than enough to deliver a movie quality character and costume.

No matter what, I’m sure it will be exciting for all involved and something new to talk about, and anything that gives the fans of this awesome film series a chance to meet with an ICON is cool! And I have no doubts it is something we will see MORE and MORE of in the coming years, and the fans are the ones who will benefit (as long as the prices and experiences are good value for money).

… so does that mean David Naughton with a werewolf body???

…Tony Todd with a mouth full of bees??

… or how about half a Joe Pilato??? (Get your photo holding his intestines??) Where do I buy my ticket?????

Surge, The (Video Game)

The SurgeDeveloped by Deck 13

Published by Focus Home Interactive

Available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Rated M for Mature

I think we should all just accept that Dark Souls is its own genre now. Trying to clump these games under the umbrella category of ARPG is just stupid. Hell, Skyrim and Final Fantasy are both considered ARPGs, despite having as much in common as curling and football. If you have checkpoints that respawn enemies, experience points that drop on death that you have to go pick up, and an intentionally high level of difficulty, you’re making a Dark Souls game. Which is just fine! My favorite type of game is Dark Souls. So someone should tell Deck 13 that this is all okay, since one of their pull quotes for The Surge is from IGN: “More than a Sci-Fi Dark Souls.” Which I guess is fair, since The Surge is actually more of a Sci-Fi Lords of the Fallen. Which was a grunge Dark Souls.

Joking aside, I was amped for The Surge. I’m actually a fan of Lords of the Fallen, which as of my most recent play through in January has aged pretty well. After numerous patches and content updates, the game in its final form holds its own. It isn’t perfect by a long shot (the magic was a bit stupid and the gauntlet was needless), but I was definitely looking forward to a sequel that continued the story.

Well instead of a sequel, we now have a new IP from Deck 13, The Surge. And just like Lords of the Fallen before it, The Surge once again takes that Dark Souls vehicle on new uncharted roads. Taking place in a dystopian near future, you play as Johnny B Protagonist, a new hire to the CREO megacorporation. About all you know (and ever will know) about your character is that you are paraplegic, who through the gruesome procedure of exoskeleton grafting has regained full mobility. On just your first day, you wake up after the surgery to find that everything has gone batshit. Almost everyone is trying to kill you, and are in various states from catatonic to aggressively homicidal.

The Surge

For a dude who was paralyzed the moment before the game started, he must have been Patrick Swayze in a past life for all his fancy footwork.

From here, it’s an increasingly brutal fight for survival as you battle your way to the truth behind what happened in the CREO facility. At least, that’s the goal. Having beaten The Surge, I can confidently say that it all has something to do with nanomachines. Or is it a toxic chemical released by the atmosphere restoration project? Or maybe corporate greed? I’m pretty sure all of those play a role somehow. And there’s a serial killer. None of it gets in the way of me murdering dudes though, and I’m sure I could figure it all out if I really tried. That’s a problem for future Ted who has time to read all the audio logs and fan theories. The point is, The Surge does not have a very straightforward plot.

The Surge

There’s no way you’re also a robot, flickering hologram lady!

Anyone familiar with Dark Souls is well versed in the stamina consuming, block/parry/dodge/counter style of combat. The Surge follows these fundamentals, but at a much faster pace. This feels way more like Bloodborne, and at times even faster than that. It all depends on the style of weapon you pick. You’ve got the quick one-handed club things, the dagger like twin-rigged claws, the heavier single-rigged energy weapons, big ol’ two-handed hammers, and staves. I went with the single-rigged weapons, because I’m afraid of change and it was the best weapon I found early on.

The Surge

It also looks like two Lightsabers strapped to a jackhammer. Nice.

Now there are differences between weapons of the same class, but mostly the attacks are the same. Between the several single rigged weapons I tried, the only major change was the charging vertical attack. I’m sure I could find more if I was really looking, but the move chains in this game are really long. If you’re used to the relatively simple three/four attack chains of Dark Souls, The Surge can get up to a dozen. It takes a lot of getting used to, especially with the heavier weapons. You can’t dodge or heal mid-attack, meaning that the most common cause of death will be from over investing into a long combo.

What really sets The Surge apart is the finisher system, which is integral to the game far beyond the spectacle. As you attack, you gather energy that can be used for special drone attacks and your finishing moves. Get your enemy low enough and if you have the energy, you can perform an insta-kill finisher. What really makes this interesting is that these finishers are your primary source of crafting materials. There are six areas to target on most enemies—head, chest, two arms, and two legs—and dealing enough damage to a specific area will lead to that area being removed during your finisher. So if you need extra chest pieces, target your opponent’s chest and divorce the two hemispheres of their body. It’s a brutal spectacle, and perpetually tickled my sadistic fancy.

The Surge

That sure is a nice right arm you have there. Be a shame if something happened to it. Let me keep it safe for you.

There are some smaller enemies with no targetable parts, but overall that’s the gist of the combat. Dodge, counter, block, decapitate, repeat. You deal more damage to unarmored body parts, and some robotic appendages can be severed if you deal enough damage. It’s a hell of a lot of fun. It isn’t perfect, but works remarkably well for the style of combat they were going for. I am sad that there isn’t the massive weapon/armor speed variety that we saw in Lords of the Fallen. In Lords you could wield a massive hammer with a two second wind up time that cleared rooms and a suit of armor that made normal attacks bounce off of you. Or, you could dance around naked with daggers. It’s another way that The Surge reminds me more of Bloodborne. There’s less variety to the combat, but it’s far more balanced and polished.

As basic as I make this sound, let me assure you that The Surge definitely lives up to the hallmark difficulty of the genre. This might be the hardest Souls game I have ever played. I was getting routinely one-shot by enemies all the way through the game. Hitting a wall will force you to change up your build, but no amount of health upgrades will stop you from getting dominated by the more beefy enemies. You will have to learn what you are doing if you want to win. I have beaten every single Dark Souls game, and never before have I gone, “well fuck… guess I’m dead…” so many times. I genuinely do not think most gamers will be able to complete this game.

The Surge

It wouldn’t be sci-fi Dark Souls without a boss the size of a factory!

The Surge also adopts a unique leveling system that sets it apart from other titles in the genre. Similar to other Souls games, you collect experience that serves to both level you and craft gear. Traditionally, this has translated to one skill point per level, distributed in a number of staple categories like strength, stamina, health, etc. The Surge does things differently, as you level the “core power” of your rig. Actually leveling doesn’t do anything other than open more implant slots and increase the power capacity of your rig. Each piece of gear and implant require an amount of core power, with more powerful implants taxing your system more. So if you want the highest level health upgrade, you might have to sacrifice your favorite energy generation implant.

What this means is that builds are much more easily switched out. If you want to go farming parts, you can load up on finisher healing implants and energy generation. For boss fights, you can go fully into health potions and max health implants. I started as a heavy armor bonus energy build, and about halfway switched seamlessly to a more appropriate medium armor finisher build with increased stamina. The only barrier to this fluidity is the weapon proficiency system. As you use weapons, you gain experience in all weapons of that type. Higher levels increase your damage and effectiveness with the weapon. It’s nice to be rewarded for my playstyle, but it also meant that I never wanted to try new weapons. I didn’t want to miss out on the experience for my favorite type, not to mention the nerf I’d take from starting back over at square one.

The Surge

At this point my single rigged proficiency can pour its own drinks, so I might as well just buy it a ring.

The level design is also a standout, with looping paths and unlockable secrets galore. It’s not as robust of a game in general as Dark Souls 3, but I’ll be damned if some of the secrets didn’t stack up. You’ll have to backtrack a lot if you want everything, but it’s well worth it for some of the games juicier hidden areas.

The Surge

The more obvious secrets, like this repair point, generally also require a hefty amount of backtracking.

Now so far I’ve been pretty much all praise for The Surge, but this is the moment of the big “but” that I cannot lie about. In my total runtime, I ran into about seven fatal crashes and at least a dozen minor bugs. There were a few times when the game would just flicker and change resolutions without warning, or just freeze and shutdown for no apparent reason. There’s a big joke about bugs being features in Dark Souls, but sometimes enemies would just be untargetable for no reason. I actually beat the harder security guards early in the game by figuring out their max leash distance and rubber banding them until they got stuck on a wall and unable to fight back. Just like any man would.

A lot of the gameplay features also just felt half baked. There are a number of quests in the game, and I for the life of me cannot figure out what their overall impact is. Usually these long chains lead to something like an alternate ending or a piece of legendary gear, but as far as I can tell all I got were a few crafting components and a slap on the bum. Also, the weird jump/duck dodge can fuck right off. The blocking in this game is already kind of slow, and adding a directional component to that was just flat impossible. I played on the PC, meaning to jump over an attack you would have to block and then mousewheel up. I did this simple and intuitive maneuver correctly exactly 0 times. I got through the game without it just fine, but it’s annoying that I couldn’t even do it in the first place.

The Surge

These little assholes will become your worst enemies.

There are also some more fundamental problems, like general gear imbalance and a lack of enemy variety. I’m the kind of guy that likes to build every set, and was surprised to find that the midgame medium armor had a higher armor rating than the end game heavy armor. There are other benefits like set bonuses and heavy armor stability, but from what I could tell the medium armor was just far superior. There are also only like twelve different enemies really, all dressed in different levels/combinations of armor. The enemies are varied enough to always provide a challenge, but I can see how it gets predictable.

The Surge

I spent about a half an hour farming out this bloody predator armor. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

I’m currently on my NG+ run of The Surge. Just like the base game, it’s a mixed back of positives and negatives. On the plus side, new enemies are way harder than any I fought in the base game. On the down side, a new bug has reared its ugly head with some gear being permanently unequipable in my inventory. The biggest tell for how I feel about it is that I spent six hours running through it before writing this. The Surge is an incredibly fun and challenging game, memorable for some truly great moments. But with the amount of time it demands from you, it’s impossible not to notice the jagged edges. If you love these kinds of games, pick up The Surge. If you don’t, prepare to get your ass handed to you.

If you’re a fan of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy franchise The Witcher, you’ll be happy to hear it’s being brought to life as a new series on Netflix. We have the early details for you here!

From the Press Release:
Netflix is developing and producing a new English-language drama series based on The Witcher, the globally popular fantasy saga from Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski that has entranced legions of fans worldwide. Known collectively as The Witcher Saga, Sapkowski’s eight novels and story collections center on “witchers” — hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly monsters. The New York Times bestselling books have spawned a major video game franchise and have been translated into over 20 languages.

“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” said Erik Barmack, Netflix Vice President, international series. “We couldn’t be more excited about bringing [it to] Netflix members around the world.”

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing,” said Sapkowski. “I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

Sapkowski will serve as a creative consultant on the series. Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise, Ben-Hur, “The Expanse”) and Jason Brown (“The Expanse”), partners at the Sean Daniel Company, are executive producers along with Tomek Baginski (Oscar-nominated short The Cathedral, BAFTA-winning Fallen Art, Ambition) and Jarek Sawko (Fallen Art, Another Day of Life) from Platige Image, the Polish production and visual effects company. Bagiński will also direct at least one episode of each season.

“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world,” said Sean Daniel and Jason Brown. “The characters are original, funny, and constantly surprising; and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

Added Platige Image’s Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko: “There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”

Mortal Kombat Writer Talks About Original Reboot Script

It’s been known for a while that Mortal Kombat is in the process of getting a new adaptation. The last we heard was that Simon McQuoid would be sitting in the director’s chair. Now, writer Oren Uziel has spoken with the folk over at Collider about the original script and what it featured. From the sound of it, the film was going to be rather epic in scope!

Uziel’s relationship with Mortal Kombat has been going on for a while. He was the scribe behind the the short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which saw the creation of the Machinima online series “Mortal Kombat: Legacy”. Talking about that, Uziel explains, “I know [Kevin Tancharoen] used that to convince Machinima to make the digital series which I didn’t have anything to do with, and then after a couple years of that New Line came onboard to actually make a feature version again. And it was at that point that Kevin called and New Line called and said, ‘Hey, you were there at at the beginning, do you wanna come back?’ I said, ‘Sure’, so I wrote them a feature that has been the basis of what the Mortal Kombat movie will be, but it’s been kicking around for a little while now.

While Uziel’s script was the basis of the upcoming adaptation, it’s uncertain just how much remains. But what he explains sounds incredibly interesting! “Well, and again I don’t know what remains of this, but I know that it was going to be—it’s almost like if you took The Avengers, or if you took a storyline like that and set it in a sort of hard-R, over-the-top violence and hard-edged world of Mortal Kombat. It was a little bit like that, it was a little bit like a Wanted-type story that brought together a bunch of these characters and just pulled zero punches, and had a tone that was still fun but very dark,” he explains.

As for now, we’ll just have to wait and see what comes next from this project!

My Haunted House Sounds Kinda Like The Munsters

Concourse Film Trade has netted the worldwide rights to the animated film My Haunted House, according to Variety. The film is directed by Alex Williams, who has credits on films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Iron Giant, and Monster House. The film is currently in pre-production and Concourse are at Cannes opening sales for the film.

Synopsis:
The story follows Charlie, a perfectly normal 14-year-old boy, who lives in a perfectly normal, ordinary town. He just happens to live in a haunted house with his strange and embarrassing supernatural family made up of Frankenstein, Count Dracula, mummies, and zombies.

From the description, it kinda sounds like Charlie is similar to Marilyn from “The Munsters”, who was the “normal” member of the family. However, she didn’t let that change the strong relationship she had with everyone, embracing and accepting that her relatives were a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, werewolf, and more!
