American Guinea Pig 4: Sacrifice (2017)

0
0

Starring Roberto Scorza and Flora Giannattasio

Directed by Poison Rouge

I believe I’ve written here about the Texas Frightmare Weekend Penis Curse.

It goes like this: if there are 12 movies playing over the course of a TFW, and I see two of those, one will feature on-screen peen. I’m cursed. Every year, I manage to see one movie that has dong. Considering how rare that is in American film, that’s a streak well outside what would be expected. Several movies across several years, and one had a clown face painted on the tip. Complete with red clown nose.  (Thanks, Circus Of The Damned.)

Sacrifice is the real crescendo, though. The cherry on top of the dick sundae. Maybe that’ll break the curse and next year will be johnson-free?

The lead actor’s ween should have it’s own line in the credits, and the producer made it clear there were at least two stunt cocks in the film as well.

All that willy talk aside, this was the secret screening this year. As I understand it from the producer’s talk after the film, it was a secret because fans of the American Guinea Pig series were expecting another film, Song of Solomon, but that isn’t finished yet. This was, so it was a surprise.

Oddly enough, Sacrifice is an Italian film. A first time effort by female director Poison Rouge, Sacrifice is a fitting entry into the Guinea Pig pantheon of gore-fests.

The story here is just enough to get us into the grue and excuse its existence, which is fitting for a Guinea Pig movie. Daniel is a young man with a troubled past. He returns to his childhood home where something bad went down with his parents. He goes into the bathroom, strips to his tighty whiteys, and starts mutilating himself.

His madness has a method to it, and that unfolds as the film moves towards the gruesome finale. I won’t spoil it here, but it leads to some extremely intimate acts of self-harm that you haven’t really seen on the screen before.

What’s more, producer Stephen Biro made it clear that at least some of the shots were not filmed with prosthetics. Yes, there are people in Italy who do this to their own penises for giggles, apparently. As he put it, two things run through your mind while watching: man, this is long, and I’m really glad that’s not a flathead.

Just like the good old days of the original Guinea Pig series, the focus here is on the gore and how effective it is. The realism here is a mixed bag, with some odd and unexpected results. A couple of seemingly simple things, surface wounds, look pretty face, while some of the more advanced stuff comes off and completely “Charlie Sheen calling the FBI” realistic. (Above and beyond the mostly-real penile violence.)

The other major problem with the film is a horribly miscast English voiceover actor for Daniel. (We never see Daniel speak, all dialogue is internal/voiceover.) Daniel is a tall, athletic, Italian man with a beard and bushy black hair. The actor doing the voiceover has a rather high-pitched voice and a thick British accent. It doesn’t match, at all, and is very distracting. I wonder if the original cut of the film had no dialogue at all, and just showed the events of the film without any commentary. That, honestly, could have made for a much more interesting film. A text plate at the end of the film clues the viewer into what Daniel was up to, so I’m not sure the narration was even needed.

That being said, the narration is there, it is what it is, and they chose a really poor match to voice the inner working’s of Daniel’s mind.

Other than those two complaints, though, this isn’t a bad movie at all. It’s definitely part of the American Guinea Pig series, so anyone looking for a compelling plot and character arcs will be sorely disappointed and extremely nauseated. This is for extreme gore hounds only, and even the hardcore Texas Frightmare audience was doing quite a lot of squirming.

If you’re into gore FX and either of the Guinea Pig series, you’ll enjoy this one. It’s a rollercoaster as we move from one horrific self-mutilation to the next, which is exactly what Guinea Pig fans are looking for. As all violence in the film is entirely self-directed, the film also dodges any complaints of misogyny or “torture porn” and hearkens back to the original series’ entry Man Who Wouldn’t Die.

Seek it out if you can handle it. Just be warned about the peen. So much peen…

Exclusive: Ali Larter on Playing Claire Redfield and the End of the Resident Evil Franchise

0
0

This week saw the home video release of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (review), the sixth and final installment in the franchise that began in 2002. Through the series, we’ve met many face, both new to the storyline and those from the games, including Claire Redfield, who originally made her appearance in Resident Evil 2 as the sister of Chris Redfield, one of Resident Evil‘s most notable characters. In the films, Claire first appeared in Resident Evil: Extinction, where she was portrayed by Final Destination‘s Ali Larter.

Larter went on to reprise her role twice more, once in Afterlife and again in The Final Chapter. To recognize her vital role in the series, I had the chance to catch up with Larter to discuss her thoughts on the film, the strength and humanity Claire possesses, what the future holds for her, and more. Check it all out below!

You can pick up your copy of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter via Amazon or iTunes.

Dread Central: So, The Final Chapter comes out on home video in just under two weeks. What goes through your mind when you think about Claire’s journey in the films?

Ali Larter: You know what, it’s pretty wild. I’ve been working on that character for ten years, from where it began where you really see her kind of connect with Alice and you see them build this relationship of trust and admiration and in this post-apocalyptic world how do you survive? Then you see in different ways, you see them use their skills, use their relationship, it’s been really interesting.

DC: Something that always stood out to me about Claire was that she’s very strong and capable of extreme violence. That being said, she’s also got a lot of humanity and she make sit clear that she hasn’t lost herself in this new world.

AL: Well thank you for saying that. You know, in a movie like this you get very small moments to be able to bring this humanity and I think that’s something that I’ve really enjoyed, being able to balance it out, that she is a real person, she is someone that even in this post-apocalyptic world you can relate to her in that way, with lots of emotions or developed relationships with people and cared for them deeply but at the same time knows you can never slow down. You can never allow yourself to get too close because chances are they’re never going to make it.

DC: Now that the cure is out in the world, what do you think comes next for Claire’s character?
AL: Wow. What is next for her…I think that her being burned so hard, that has made her more coarse and also realizing that the only place she can really look at someone and feel a sense of connection with is Alice and so I think they are going to stick together knowing they are more powerful in a pair, that you are able to do it together.

DC: Even though the film is called The Final Chapter, it’s still very open to a sequel. Would you be open to playing Claire again should a sequel come about?
AL: I mean, I loved working with Paul and Milla over the years and one of the things that was incredible during our last world tour was being able to connect with the fans and seeing how much they love these movies and in a way, one of the surprising things that has come out of being part of this franchise is how girls are so inspired to see women in typically male roles, kind of sticking up for themselves, learning stunts and being part of that, so it’s been an incredible experience and I’m really grateful I had a chance to be a part of it.

DC: The Resident Evil game series has always bounced around between characters, including Code Veronica which focused on Claire. If the powers that be decided to do Resident Evil spinoff movies and wanted one about Claire, would you do it?
AL: I mean, I’d love to read it and see what the vision is and the idea of doing it. One of the things I loved most about playing the character was the aspect of doing the stunts, learning to do these acrobatic moves and watching Milla doing it over the years was so inspiring, she looked like a ballerina up there. For me it’s been incredible working with Paul or Milla, I don’t know what the next step is but I do think this is the end of the franchise and being able to kind of end it together, and having done three movies together over a decade, is something that I’m very proud of.

DC: What else is next for you?
AL: You know, it’s been very interesting. I’ve been developing this project that is now shifting into high gear. “Pitch” isn’t coming back for a second season, so it frees me up to kind of go in some different directions and it’s been the first time in a long time that I’ve actually been available and so I’m not rushing into anything, I’m excite to sit back and try and get this project that I want to do, read some scripts, I think it’s fantastic that the writer’s strike was averted, it’s not going to happen, and explore some different avenues. I’m pretty darn excited about the future, actually.

Exclusive: Paul W.S. Anderson’s 5 Rules on Surviving Resident Evil’s Post-Apocalyptic World

Hot on the heels of our interview with Ali Larter, who played Claire Redfield in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (review) (and two previous entries), we’re now bringing to you our interview with writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson, the man who kickstarted this franchise back in the early 00’s and has been pushing it forward ever since!

In our interview, we hear Anderson’s thoughts about the future of the Resident Evil franchise that he built, if he’d come back to the series to tell stories from perspectives different from Alice’s, and what’s next on his plate! Hint: it’s another game franchise from Capcom! Also, he shares five rules to live by if you want to live through the post-apocalyptic world of Resident Evil. Head on down to give it all a read!

You can pick up your copy of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter via Amazon or iTunes.

Dread Central: How are you doing?
Paul W.S. Anderson: I’m bloody marvelous, thank you for asking.

DC: The first Resident Evil came out 15 years ago. Talk to me a bit about the journey from then to now.
PA: Well fifteen years for you, we started shooting the first movie in 2001 and wrote it in 2000 so it’s been seventeen years. It’s been a marvelous journey, it’s been an epic journey in every sense. We’ve made six movies, we travelled around the world, we started in Berlin, then we went to Toronto, then we went to Mexico, then we went back to Canada, then we went to Africa, with little stops in Moscow and Tokyo so it’s really a franchise that has circumnavigated the whole globe, which has been thrilling in itself and then getting to know a wonderful family of people. I do see our movies as kind of a family affair, this one more than most because I got to work not just with Milla but with our daughter Ever who is the Red Queen and also there’s returning characters like Iain Glen, like Ali Larter and I work with a lot of the same crew, Glen MacPherson has shot the last five of my films. You know, every time we come back together to make one of these Resident Evil movies, it’s a wonderful adventure that a team of like fifty people have been on, so it’s been an epic journey and one that never ceases to put a smile on my face.

DC: While the latest entry is called The Final Chapter, the ending does lend itself to a sequel. Do you think there’s more stories about Alice or have we reached the end of her journey?
PA: Yeah, this is the end, this movie is designed to bring the franchise full circle, to kind of take the audience back to where everything began, back to the Hive and back to the very first movie and I would hope what this movie does, is because it plays with the circle, it encourages and gives the truths about Alice, about the Red Queen. You know, what I would really like is for people to kind of re-watch the first film but with fresh eyes.

DC: The games jumped between several characters over the various entries. If you were approached to do a Resident Evil film that didn’t include Alice but rather a different main character, would that be something you’d have interest in pursuing?
PA: You know, these movies we’ve worked exceptionally hard on and I think it’s one of the reasons why the franchise has been that successful. A lot of love and labor has been put into these films, by the people in front of and behind the camera and after six movies I’ve told all the post-apocalyptic stories I want to and that I feel like telling. You know, we’ve always said the only reason we make another Resident Evil movie is because we’re excited about and that’s how you deliver it to fans, so I would not be into re-visiting the world, I think this movie brings it to a close in the most satisfying way I could imagine and there are very few filmmakers fortunate enough to work on such a broad canvas and to make six movies over seventeen years, that’s quite a run and also to end on such a high, the biggest box office that any of the films, I think I’ve done everything I intended to in the franchise and that I wanted to and I’m excited to move on and find fresh horizons, new monsters and new stories.

DC: In The Final Chapter, there are only, if I’m correct, a few thousand humans left alive worldwide. If you had to come up with 5 rules to live by during the zombie apocalypse in order to make it as one of those survivors, what would those rules be?
PA: 1) Stand behind Milla Jovovich whenever possible.
2) Stand in the middle of the streets, not in the shadows by the walls.
3) Be a very attractive human being because, having re-watched the franchise, it’s funny because the zombies don’t want to eat really attractive people.
4) Carry a very big gun.
5) Make sure you have a lot of ammunition.

DC: Well, by those rules, I think I could make it to the third movie at best. I’m good at standing in the middle of the street but I wouldn’t call myself the most attractive person!
PA: [laughs] You know it’s really funny, looking at the cast of this movie, I’m going, “God damn you guys, you’re an attractive bunch!” They’re all standing there, there’s Ruby Rose, there’s Milla, there’s Ali, I mean they’re an attractive bunch of survivors, I’ve got to say.

DC: What’s next for you?
PA: Well a couple of things, obviously I’m looking for something for Milla and I to collaborate on again because I’ve made seven movies with her and I definitely see her as my muse, we have such a good working relationship and it would be great to find something else to do with her. Also, more specifically, I’m working on an adaptation of this video game called Monster Hunter, which again is created by Capcom who created Resident Evil and Monster Hunter right now outsells Resident Evil and, I don’t know if you’re familiar with it, it’s a beautiful game, amazing landscapes and epic looking creatures and it’s very, very cinematic and it’s something I’m very excited about putting on the big screen.

I mean, these creatures [from Monster Hunter] are just fantastic and scary and epic, so I’m not moving a million miles away from the Resident Evil wheelhouse, I’m not engaged in a romantic musical comedy or anything like that, still creatures and monsters and fun.

Silently Within Your Shadow Pulling Strings on Amazon Prime Next Week

Following an international run at close to 50 festivals and a 10-venue tour of London, Scott Lyus’ haunting psychological horror short Silently Within Your Shadow will be hitting Amazon Prime next week on May 26th.

Penned by Lyus and starring Sophie Tergeist, Byron Fernandes, and Bill Moseley, Silently Within Your Shadow tells the tale of Lucette, a budding young ventriloquist, and her struggles with an unconventional love triangle. Her boyfriend, Jas, becomes increasingly concerned about the state of their relationship as tensions heighten among Lucette, himself, and her partner in pine, Hugo. To Jas, Hugo is just an inanimate kids’ puppet, but he means everything to Lucette and might possibly be much more real than anyone could imagine.

Hugo is voiced by Moseley, who brings a stark sense of dread and darkness to Lucette’s perturbing puppet, who makes Slappy, Annabelle, Chucky, et al feel pretty wooden by comparison.

Lyus is currently working on post for his latest short, Echoes of the Passed, which you can keep up-to-date with over on Twitter. In the meanwhile, we’ll leave you with the trailer for Silently Within Your Shadow, which we think will pull a few of your strings.

Tom Hardy Will Play Venom!

With the upcoming release of Marvel’s Spider-man: Homecoming, Sony is looking to expand its own cinematic universe with the reveal that Tom Hardy will be taking on the role of Eddie Brock in Venom, according to Variety. Brock is the character who becomes infected with the Symbiote that grants him the power to shapeshift into the vicious antihero.

The site also states that Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer will be directing.

Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) will write the script. Sony confirms that the film will be coming out October 5, 2018, with production kicking off this fall.

The Venom character appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, although the reception to that portrayal was less than stellar. I have a sneaking suspicion that Tom Hardy will, at the very least, make for a far more imposing Eddie Brock/Venom. Hopefully the story will be a solid one!

Suspiria 4K Edition Being Overseen by the Film’s Cinematographer

The awesome folk over at Blumhouse and Shock Waves had the chance to recently interview Synapse Films’ Don May, Jr., who spoke about their upcoming Suspiria 4K restoration. While May wasn’t able to give a release date for the highly anticipated release, he let slip two fantastic pieces of information, both of which will make any fan of the movie cheer and hate the wait for the release all that much more!

Related Story: Synapse Releases Suspiria Comparison Photos Against Videa’s Blu-ray Edition

May told Shock Waves, “We are working with Luciano Tovoli, the cinematographer, which is the ultimate reference for Suspiria. He’s been working with us every step of the way, and we’re going to get his ultimate sign-off. There are other companies that are touting restorations and doing their own thing, but if you don’t ask the guy who created the imagery, what’s the point?

So that means we can expect the 4K restoration to look absolutely magnificent while also bearing the seal of approval from the film’s cinematographer, which is a huge boost. But Synapse isn’t just focusing on making the movie look pretty; they also want it to sound incredible too!

May explains how Synapse got its hands on a very cool edition of the film that will give it a sound that few have heard before: “One of the other things our Suspiria has that no one else has used – in ’77, they made prints with magnetic LCRS 4-channel sound. In other words, when you go to a movie theater, you have optical sound on the print. It was read off of an optical reader, and it played the sound. Well, [for] Suspiria certain prints had mag tracks on them. Two mag tracks on the left of the frame and two on the right. And each one of those was left, center, right, and a mono surround. And it was discrete surround, so it wasn’t like Dolby where you get a stereo and certain frequencies would just throw to the back. Suspiria was specifically mixed with directional dialogue. Nowadays, you get a 5.1 and all the dialogue is in the center. In Suspiria there’s people talking as they walk behind, and you hear things way over to the left and way over to the right. There’s one funny scene where there are girls talking in a room, and there’s one girl sitting in the center of the frame with a pair of scissors, and the only thing in the center channel at that moment is her scissors noise! So they really did this crazy surround-track, and we’re going to be the first people to present it that way on home video. It’s really crazy.

How cool does that sound?! It seems like a ton of work went into the original audio presentation for the film, so for Synapse to find it and work on remastering that speaks volumes, no pun intended. This will be THE definitive edition of Suspiria, mark my words!

As for any other features that might be included on the disc, May states that there will be some surprises in store for viewers! “We’re going through it and getting it together and working on some extras. I don’t know if we’re going to get some of the things that we had planned, but according to one of my supplementary producers, we may have something from Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro. 20th Century Fox sent me a vault list of some of the things that they have, so we’ll use those for extras as well,” May tells Shock Waves.

The Silence Sounds Like Pitch Black Meets The Descent and I’m All About It

It’s being reported by Deadline that Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games) has joined the cast of John Leonetti’s The Silence, a fantasy horror film that takes place in a world where giant bats become a considerable threat against the human race. Tucci joins the previously announced Kiernan Shipka.

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Tim Lebbon (30 Days of Night, Berserk), and principal photography will begin this September.

Synopsis:
The Silence follows the terrifying tale of Ally, a deaf teenager, and her family, whose world is turned upside down by a deadly and primeval force. In the fields near her New Jersey home, a colony of bats are attacked by a parasitic insect and soon morph into a new lethal species called Vesps. As the blind, winged creatures quickly grow, spread, and attack the human population, Ally’s heightened senses become her strength. She can feel when the Vesps are close and realizes that even the slightest noise summons them in huge numbers.

She and her family seek refuge in the woods, where they must live in total silence. Amidst the creature chaos, they learn that humans can be just as dangerous when they are fighting to survive.

Now, read that synopsis and tell me that there aren’t elements of Pitch Black and The Descent in there! Personally, I love a good human-against-nature film, and the fact that this film features giant bats is a win in my book!

Maggie Q Suffers Sleep Paralysis During Slumber

Sleep paralysis, also known in some circles as hagging (when a ghost, witch, or demon sits upon your chest, rendering you unable to move or scream while you’re awake in bed), is a pretty hot topic in the horror realm right now; and Screen Daily just got word that there’s another flick coming our way based upon this frightening phenomenon.

According to the site, Vertical Entertainment has acquired all US rights to supernatural thriller Slumber, starring Maggie Q (pictured below).

Director Jonathan Hopkins’ movie is being lined up for a theatrical release in the US in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Richard Hobley and Hopkins’ screenplay charts the story of Alice (Maggie Q), a rationally minded sleep doctor, who is forced to abandon scientific reason and accept a family is being terrorized by a parasitic demon which paralyzes victims as they sleep.

The film is produced by The Tea Shop & Film Company’s Mark Lane and James Harris and by Pascal Degove for Goldcrest Films, which handles sales on the project.

Goldcrest MD Degove said: “The cast and crew have done an amazing job in bringing this thrilling story to life… I’m excited now about joining forces with the team at Vertical Entertainment and getting this film to American audiences.”

Rich Goldberg, co-president of Vertical Entertainment, continued: “We’re very excited to be partnering with Goldcrest Films and the whole Slumber team to bring this gripping thriller to audiences all over the US.

Fantasia Frontières Market 2017 to Include George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead and More!

Before you get too excited, no, Romero is NOT directing this film. Rather, this is a project he’s writing and producing that is seeking funding during this year’s Fantasia Frontières Market in July.

According to Indiewire, Road of the Dead is the next zombie film following Romero’s last three movies as a director: Survival of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Land of the Dead. Matt Birman, who served as second unit director on all three movies and has worked as a stunt coordinator and stuntman for more than three decades, is directing.

Road of the Dead originated as an original pitch from Birman roughly 10 years ago. The story is set on an island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum for the entertainment of wealthy humans. Birman describes the project as Road Warrior meets Rollerball at a Nascar race, with significant inspiration from Ben-Hur.

Read on to learn what other films are in the works and will be presented during the Market.

From the Press Release:
Wrapping up a year that already includes the inaugural Frontières Finance & Packaging Forum in Amsterdam and the upcoming Frontières Platform in Cannes, Frontières returns to the Fantasia International Film Festival for the 9th edition of its co-production market. The market will take place July 20-23 in Montreal.

Frontières connects North America with Europe in an environment specifically focused on genre film co-production and financing. Now a multi-platform initiative in partnership with the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, this year Frontières has expanded its programming to provide in-depth networking and development opportunities for projects at various stages of development.

Frontières is thrilled to announce a first wave of projects selected to participate in its 9th edition. Notable project helmers include: the legendary George A. Romero (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, DAWN OF THE DEAD); director/writer Blaine Thurier (LOW SELF-ESTEEM GIRL, indie rock’s THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS); producers Titus Kreyenberg (I AM NOT A WITCH), Caroline Piras (AUX YEUX DES VIVANTS – AMONG THE LIVING), and the team behind I SELL THE DEAD and the live radio drama TALES BEYOND THE PALE, Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid with writer Clay McLeod Chapman (THE BOY); and director-producer team Antonio Tublén and Alexander Brondsted (LFO, ROBIN). The full project line-up will be announced in early June.

This weekend in Cannes, Frontières will also unveil the Frontières Platform at the Marché du Film, a dedicated section of presentations and networking opportunities for the genre community. Events will include a Proof of Concept Presentation of projects in the late finance and packaging stages, a Buyers’ Showcase of recently completed or work-in-progress films, and the co-presentation of the Fantastic Fanatics Mixer, a networking cocktail in partnership with genre festivals and markets around the world.
