Get Out Special Blu-ray Screening Event Report!

Dread Central was honored to be among a select group of horror sites to get a glimpse of the special feature on the newly-released Get Out (review) Blu-ray, and view a Q&A with director Jordan Peele, producer Jason Blum, and cast members Daniel Kaluuya (Chris Washington) and Allison Williams (Rose Armitage).

They showed us several clips from the film, and discussed the stories behind them, and Peele even revealed a different, downbeat ending he had in mind for the film, originally.

In case you’re not familiar with the story, here’s the gist: Now that Chris and his girlfriend, Rose, have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate to her parent’s house. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

Get Out Event

Here’s some of what the Get Out folks had to say, during the Q&A.

Jordan Peele: I think we knew what we had. We knew we had something cool and the whole process leading towards the release, our confidence only grew with it. The biggest surprise to me was the ability to get this thing made, so I just want to do multiple shout outs and kudos to Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum and Universal, because this is a movie that takes an incredible amount of trust and foresight to be able to invest the type of energy that they did. I’m just so honored, the cast and crew as well… I’m just so honored that everyone went on this ride with me and trusted this vision. Obviously if it was a fail, it would have been an epic fail, so it was just nice to get this collaboration, this community of people willing to go there. The first time we discussed it, it was actually a pitch. I talked to Sean before we even wrote it.

Sean McKittrick: Yeah, it was, you were writing back to back with Key and Peele, when you were writing the first draft, and you knew it was something special right away. It was even in his initial pitch of what the movie was going to be that we had to get involved, because this movie has never been made before, that’s one of the most exciting things, it’s never been done.

Jason Blum: Well, Jordan is the king, I mean his first movie is a grand slam Forbes 500. I was very excited about the dailies, and I was very excited the first time I saw the movie. The movie business is a very crazy thing so for me, I probably shouldn’t even say this, but the screening felt like it was special, the response was really good. And the opening weekend was a very, very solid result. For me the moment that was ‘oh my god, Jordan has made something that’s touched a nerve,’ was the second weekend. Typically, genre movies drop off about fifty percent and the movie dropped off less than twenty percent – and that was the moment where, you know, other people and myself too, it was like ‘oh my god.’ Someone asked me today, ‘how much did you expect this to make?’ and for us, it did 3.5 times our best-case scenario of what we thought it would do, and that really came on the second weekend. It got better and better as time went on which is really very rare, and so much fun for what we do. I mean, it’s still in theaters. Yeah. It’s still in theaters.

Daniel Kaluuya: I was in Whole Foods shopping, and this guy goes ‘Daniel.’ And I was thining, ‘well, why did you just say my first name like that?’

Allison Williams: Because they can’t pronounce your last name.

Kaluuya: Yeah. And so the Whole Foods employees wanted to take pictures with me, but they’d take their uniform off. It was really intense, people we’re following me around, it kind of felt like [my character in] Get Out. So yeah, I was in a bubble filming in Atlanta, I’d just do little shopping trips, and I thought this is different. So it was pretty surreal.

Williams: I changed my hair color right after the movie came out and so a lot of people look at me and go ‘oh my god, is she in another disguise? She’s just walking among us.’ So I get these people who love the movie but keep five feet between us while we have this interaction, which I totally get. I like hearing that people saw it and enjoyed it. From experience, most people want to deconstruct something with you, and they want to test a theory they had, a question they had about something, see if they were right about something to do with the plot, a little Easter Egg or something like that. That’s what’s really fun. Rarely is there a drive-by comment, it’s like we’re in it, we’re having a conversation, and what could possibly be more rewarding than that?

Peele: The tone was the big challenge, a big balancing act, and we knew that even going into writing. The pitch was a cool pitch but you still can’t really picture this movie done right in a tasteful way so for me, the kind of due north was basically reality, allowing the whole premise, a pretty pulpy premise, a comedic side, there’s levity to it, so you really just have to make everything feel as real as you possibly can and then hope that through that you’ll have this sort of cohesion of tone, and that’s the way we did it. We took the horror moments as serious as the moments where Lil Rel Howery and Daniel were on the phone talking. With the character of Chris I was looking for somebody that not only could the audience relate to, but trust. I wanted to serve any horror movie audience that has ever wished the main character was smarter. So, I knew every step of the way the character Chris would never lose our trust, and that was very important. With Rose, I knew that entire story hinges on the nuances of how Rose was to be played, and I needed to be able to make the subtlest of adjustments to sort of protect that story. As a relationship though, that was the big thing. We needed to not only believe in their love story but root for their love story, for it to work.

Get Out Interview

When the deer gets hit by the car and moans its last breath, that’s actually Peele’s voice. “My other little cameo is ‘the mind is a terrible thing to waste’, from my MAD TV/ Morgan Freeman days,” he added.

Peele: When it came to doing the music, I knew the energy of the score. I worked with a guy named Michael Abels. This is his first score in a film and he was game in trying to figure out this new kind of music, this thing that sounded decidedly black, that had these black voices. It felt like a sinister, sort of Bernard Herrmann score, so we were on the tip of making this new sound that was really fun. So, I kind of knew where the energy was going.

Kaluuya: What was so amazing about the score was at the premiere, my mom is from Uganda, so in the beginning the music is Swahili. And she’s like, ‘oh, they’re saying get out.’ I knew there was stuff in the score that was saying ‘run, run,’ and ‘run’ was in Swahili, and my mom is in the audience saying ‘oh good, they’re telling him to run.’ Like in the middle of the film, when you see what’s going on, and so it’s just like at every single level it influences our performances.

Williams: When it comes to Rose and how she keeps her secrets, I wanted to layer it so the second time you saw it, you saw someone that was on one mission the entire time, rather than someone who picks up the mission and the audience picks up on it. So hopefully the second time you see it, you see everything she does is to get him to that living room, so that her dad can give that spiel he insists on giving. Just literally everything she does the entire time, that’s her job, she’s a retriever. Rose is very convincing and has been doing this alter ego, for four months. So she has been living this life, she’s been imbedded in a way, so it’s also been about someone who’s been so careful and is so precise and specific and particular. She is just at the very end of her mission, and everyone is constantly threatening to fuck it up for her and she is just so annoyed with everyone at every moment. Then I factored in: what kind of person is that, if you stop developing at a young age, and start taking on characters all the time? You’ll probably be stunted or stalled in pre-adolescence, so you’d have a teddy bear, listening to I’ve Had The Time Of My Life, maybe your clothes are kind of androgynous, maybe you have no sexuality in any kind of discernable way. And maybe you have so little control, that the rest of the time you’re incredibly militantly controlled, so there’s not a hair out of place, you have perfect posture, no creases in your clothes… so that stuff started to come together once I started thinking about what must that person be like.

Event Horizon Director’s Cut Never Coming

Dark days, man. We like you were hoping that one day we’d see a director’s cut of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon which to date is arguably his best film. You see back upon the film’s release it fell victim to a CENSOR EVERYTHING version of the MPAA who to their credit have loosened up a bit… not much… but a tiny bit. Why this group still even exists is another story, but for now let’s focus on this.

Recently Crave Online caught up with Anderson to ask if we’d ever see the movie with all the sick shit put back in. The answer just sucks.

There was a lot more that was shot that isn’t in the movie. But you’ll never see the messed up version because we made Event before the kind of DVD revolution. You know, DVD ushered in this era when you had to have additional footage, deleted scenes, things like that. There was no call for that back when we were just doing VHS cassettes and LaserDiscs. So the material just wasn’t archived very well. And since the movie became a big cult classic, Paramount have asked us to come back in and do different versions; we looked for the material, and it just doesn’t exist.

Oh well… maybe one day. The uncut version of My Bloody Valentinedidn’t exist” at first remember?

At least we’ll always have this image gallery.

Tokyo Ghoul Cafe Has a Disgustingly Delicious Menu

I never considered myself a fussy eater, because I’ll devour pretty much anything you put in front of me. Which is why I have a sudden urge to visit the Tokyo Ghoul-themed cafe, which has will soon open in Japan.

TV Over Mind provided the following details:

The Tokyo Ghoul cafe will run from May 27 to June 28 on the seventh floor of Ikebukuro PARCO at The Guest Cafe and Diner. In addition to dishes like Tsukiyama’s Eyeball Mousse and “Himami’s Hamburg” complete with a side of finger-shaped hot dogs, guests will be able to buy special limited-edition goods and check out an exhibition of costumes from the film.

Looking at the gruesome looking dishes below, I don’t know if I should be licking my lips or recoiling in disgust. Either way, I know I want to chew on those finger-shaped hot dogs.

The live action Tokyo Ghoul movie opens in Japan on June 29.

The whole evolution vs. creationism thing is about to get a whole lot more crazy in the new movie The VelociPastor, in which a holy man is granted the ability to transform into a dinosaur. Cue reptilian superhero antics. Watch the trailer for this awesome sounding movie below.

The VelociPastor was directed by Brendan Steere and stars Aurelio Voltaire, Gregory James Cohan, Alyssa Kempinski, and Nicholas M. Garofolo star. In this day and age, the world desperately needs a movie where a priest turned dinosaur punches ninjas in the face, so we’ll definitely let you know when we hear news of a release date.

By the way, if the name sounds familiar, it’s because The VelociPastor serves as a feature-length film adaptation of a fake trailer released back in 2011, which was also directed by Brendan Steere. If you never caught the hilarious fake trailer when it was released six years, you can watch it here.

Priest + Dinosaur = Victory
After losing his parents, a priest travels to China, where he inherits a mysterious ability that allows him to turn into a dinosaur. At first horrified by this new power, a hooker convinces him to use it to fight crime. And ninjas.

Cannes 2017: Psycho Documentary 78/52 Ready to Make a Splash Overseas

We have more international distro news for you right now as reports are coming in from Cannes that the Alexandre O. Philippe-directed documentary 78/52 has reached deals with distributors in Australia/New Zealand (Monster), Italy (Koch Media), China (Huanxi Media), Spain (A Contracorriente), and France (Films Distribution). The news arrived via Screen Daily, who also provided the clip you’ll find below, which features Elijah Wood.

The film was previously acquired by IFC Midnight out of Sundance for its domestic release.

78/52 deconstructs the infamous shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and features interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Bret Easton Ellis, Karyn Kusama, Eli Roth, Walter Murch, Peter Bogdanovich, and more, including Janet Leigh’s daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Anthony Perkins’ son, Osgood Perkins. Philippe wrote the script, which breaks down the scene that became a template for how to terrorize a movie audience with a combination of imagery and suggestion.

The title refers to the number of setups (78) and cuts (52) in the scene, which took one quarter of Psycho’s four-week shooting schedule.

78/52 is an Exhibit A Pictures production, produced by Kerry Deignan Roy and co-produced by Oliver Schwehm of ARTE G.E.I.E., Chad Herschberger of Milkhaus, Annick Mahnert of Screen Division, and Robert Muratore of EXA. Felix Gill of Sensorshot Productions, Joey Porcelli, and Randy Pharo served as executive producers.

Internationally the series premiered on Amazon’s international Prime Video service on May 1, 2017, where it is currently the most watched show in the U.K. on the streaming service.

Last week it was announced that STARZ has picked up a second season of the deity-driven, critically acclaimed original series. Amazon Prime Video also followed suit and will make the second season available to more than 200 territories outside the U.S.

“There has been so much excitement and anticipation for ‘American Gods’ that we wanted to offer our fan base a collection of product in celebration of the first season,” said Andrea Brent, Senior Vice President of Licensing & Franchise Management, FremantleMedia North America. “An expanded offering is currently in development and will be available in 2018 to support the recently announced second season.”

In addition, Trends will release a series of posters and bookmarks carrying the iconic American Gods imagery for the U.S. market.

For the rabid collector, Chronicle Books is creating a behind-the-scenes hardcover book that will provide further insight into the making of season 1, while Rittenhouse Archives will release a series of trading cards in both the printed and digital format.

Collectors will rejoice with stylized figures from Funko, non-articulated vinyl figures from Titan, and articulated action figures, foam replicas and scalers from NECA. All of these products will be available globally.

The store is scheduled to launch in June and will initially feature limited edition, curated product bundles. The bundles will include both products developed by Brand Access as well as other officially licensed merchandise.

Remember When Twin Peaks Inspired Both Psych and Darkwing Duck?

$

Today is a momentous occasion. After 25 long years, David Lynch and Mark Frost’s supernatural murder mystery series “Twin Peaks” returns to the small screen with a third season on Showtime. A continuation of where the series left off, we return to that charming Pacific Northwest town and the delightful characters within, only now there are more mysteries that need answers…and more pie and coffee that need to be consumed!

The impact of “Twin Peaks” cannot be understated. It is, perhaps, one of the most influential television shows of all time. By pushing the boundaries of what storytelling could offer, the show inspired the likes of “The X-Files”, “Carnivale”, “Hannibal”, “Lost”, “Stranger Things”, and so many more. Its blend of humor, eeriness, wonderful characters, engaging stories, and euphoric music crafted a series that is timeless, one that will enchant viewers from now until eternity.

Two shows that took direct inspiration from Lynch and Frost’s series were the children’s cartoon “Darkwing Duck” and USA’s comedy series “Psych”. Since we’re going to return to “Twin Peaks” tonight, I figured I’d spend today cherishing the shows that kept the spirit of Agent Cooper and Co. alive after all these years.

“Psych” – Dual Spires

The 12th episode of the 5th season, Shawn and Gus are invited to a picturesque town during its Cinnamon Festival. While there, they investigate the death of a local teenager Paula Merral (an anagram of Laura Palmer), who drowned and was found wrapped in plastic. Featuring guest appearances from “Twin Peaks” stars Sherilyn Fenn, Dana Ashbrook, Sheryl Lee, Robyn Lively, Lenny Von Dohlen, Catherine E. Coulson, and Ray Wise, the episode was a direct nod to “Twin Peaks” in style, visuals, characters, references, and more, including Julee Cruise’s reinterpretation of the “Psych” theme song.

“Darkwing Duck – Twin Beaks

Admission: when I was a child, this episode haunted me. Something about it actually was actually frightening in my mind and I refused to revisit it for years. Then, one day, I told myself that I was much older and that this couldn’t frighten me any longer. And it didn’t! Now I was able to appreciate this episode for its surreal quirkiness and downright adult moments (seriously, no child should watch this episode).

The 44th episode of the 1st season, “Twin Beaks” sees Darkwing Duck investigating the recent escape of Bushroot. After some strange shenanigans occur with Honker and his parents, Darkwing Duck and Launchpad go to the town of Twin Beaks in see if they can find Bushroot. However, something in the town is strangely amiss and there seems to be a strange obsession with cabbages…

Once again, there are multiple references to “Twin Peaks”. Our heroes find a seemingly dead Bushroot wrapped in plastic, there’s a field of cows that has a launchpad with a message that reads “The cows are not what they seem”, and Darkwing Duck does some investigating in his dreams. If that isn’t a direct nod to Agent Cooper, I don’t know what is!

Ron Perlman Comments on What Hellboy 3 Would’ve Been

$

Recently, it was announced that Mike Mignola would be working on rebooting the Hellboy franchise with “Stranger Things” star David Harbour taking on the title role. For many, this was an amazing turn of events as it meant we would be able to see more of this character and the adventures of the B.P.R.D. For others, however, it was a tragic announcement that hammered the final nail into the coffin of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy 3, confirming that the conclusion to his planned trilogy would never see the light of day, at least in the form of a feature film.

Related Story: Let’s Talk About This Hellboy Reboot

During a panel at this weekend’s Motor City Comic Con, Perlman spoke briefly about Hellboy 3 and what fans could’ve expected, saying, “The third one was meant to be epic and conclusive and a resolve for all these, almost, Greek oracle promises of the destiny of Hellboy. It would’ve made for a really good movie, I think.

Speaking about the upcoming adaptation, Perlman simply says, “David Harbour is a good dude. I wish him nothing but the best when it comes to the retooling of HB.

Also during the panel, Perlman confirmed that he does not reprise his role as Hannibal Chau in Pacific Rim 2.

Speaking briefly about his role in The City of Lost Children, one of my personal favorite films of all time, Perlman told the follwing anecdote: “The hardest thing about the movie is I’m supposed to get bitten by this thing and become monstrous. I take this little girl and become an ogre and slap this little girl. The director insisted I slap her so that she’d really cry. It took me 22 takes, because I kept pulling my punches. But right before the last take, I went to [director] Jean-Pierre [Jeunet] and slapped him to see if that’s what he wanted. He had tears in his eyes and said, “Yes!”

Casper Van Dien Shares Several Behind-the-Scenes Photos From Starship Troopers

A movie that was criminally underseen, and underrated, upon release was Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers. A satirical take on war and fascism, the film focused on several soldiers as they fought against an alien race known as “Arachnids”. The film only made $121 million against a budget of $105 million, making it a commercial flop.

Casper Van Dien, the star of the original film (and also the third entry Marauder), has been posting some great behind-the-scenes photos from Starship Troopers via his Facebook page. The photos include him hanging out with his co-stars as well as lounging about on set. You can see the photos below.

Rather surprisingly, a reboot of the franchise was announced last November with writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the duo behind Freddy vs Jason, Friday the 13th, Baywatch, and more, attached. Since then, no new information has been released.

Synopsis:
In the distant future, the Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. But there was a time before the war…

A Mobile Infantry travels to distant alien planets to take the war to the Bugs. They are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: Survival of their species no matter what the cost…

Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Fans Shut Down By Police at Cannes!

While it would seem that a film festival would be the best place for a film studio to have some fun, it would appear that this is no longer the case. Lloyd Kaufman and several people marching and holding signs in support of Troma have apparently been accosted by local authorities, who shut down their parade.

We got in direct contact with Kaufman who told us, “The Elites want to police out all independent competition. Sundance has done it; now Cannes. Disney can wear masks and carry signs but not Troma! More $ and power going to the elite few! Cannes is a good metaphor for FCC killing Net Neutrality on the internet!

“They did put Toxie & our team up against the wall! Just like Law and Order! They threatened to take me in but only took info from my license,” Kaufman explains.

As of now, there’s no need to worry as Kaufman is out and all smiles, as you can see below!

That Time When Child’s Play’s Chucky Ventured Into Weird Al’s Fat Suit

Sometimes the most seemingly opposite worlds have the most curious of connections. It’s not something one thinks of off the top of one’s head but, when it becomes apparent, suddenly it all makes sense. Case in point: Kevin Yagher is a special FX makeup and designer in Hollywood who, for over 30 years, has been creating some iconic and incredible pieces, such as the Crypt Keeper used in “Tales From the Crypt”. The other day, Yagher posted a photo that is so absurd yet so humorous, we couldn’t help but share it with you all!

I’ll let Yahger explain: “While working on Child’s Play 1, I was also creating the fat makeup and fat suit for Weird Al Yankovic’s FAT video, the hilarious parody of Michael Jackson’s Bad video – I plopped the 1st stage animatronic Chucky head and hands onto the Yankovic suit and snapped this photo – made me laugh!

Check it out below and make sure to follow Yagher’s Facebook for more pictures like this!

As Fully Expected, Resident Evil is Getting a Reboot

Just a couple of days after we posted our interviews with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter‘s Paul W.S. Anderson and Ali Larter, Germany’s Constantin Film has announced at Cannes that they are rebooting the zombie video game film franchise, according to Variety. There are no details on who they plan on getting to star in the new adaptation to direct it but Constantin Film chairman of the board Martin Moszkowicz is adamant that it’s happening.

Now, the question that immediately comes up is “How will it factor into the already released six films?” Paul W.S. Anderson wrote all six entries since the 2002 first film and directed four of them but it’s not known if he will be involved. If my interview with him (click on the link above) is any indication, he has no interest in going back to that series. However, it’s a confirmed paycheck as these films do exceptionally well, especially overseas. Hell, The Final Chapter took in $160 million in China alone. That’s nothing to scoff at.

However, what would be FAR more interesting is if they did a complete blank slate situation and started the series over from scratch. That way they would be able to adapt the stories we’ve seen in the video games and perhaps take them in new directions. Those of us who have played the games know what happens in that universe. If we have that same foundation – and hopefully the same characters – then whoever writes the film(s) can venture into new and interesting territories.

For example, the novelizations did a thing where every odd number book was an adaptation of the games but the even number books were original stories with the known characters. They were interesting in that they expanded the world of Umbrella, which allowed people like Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, Claire Redfield, and more, to face off against weird creatures that were never in the games.

For now, all we can do is sit and wait!

My Thoughts on The New Twin Peaks Episodes

We can officially go from saying “It is happening again” to “It has begun“*. After more than 25 years of waiting, David Lynch and Mark Frost’s “Twin Peaks” has returned to television in the form of an 18-episode revival season on Showtime. It’s been a long time coming and fans of the series may finally be able to get answers to the cliffhangers that dominated the end of the second season back in 1991. But do these two episodes that just aired bring back that same atmosphere, that same magic that the original two seasons gave us? As a longtime fan of the series, I want to weigh in with my thoughts on what the world was just gifted.

Read everything below but be aware that there are HEAVY spoilers for the first two episodes.

Right away, let me be clear that there’s no way to write out a synopsis of these first two hours. It’s impossible to do so because there essentially wasn’t a traditional story. Rather, these first two episodes were more of an introduction back into the world of “Twin Peaks”, a way to clue us in to what has been happening with many of the characters we’ve already met as well as a means to introduce new characters and premises.

Some characters that we meet again are Dr. Jacoby, who is still wearing his red-and-blue sunglasses. He lives in an almost RV/tent situation where he was delivered a couple boxes of shovels. Why, you ask? It doesn’t matter because it cuts away and we don’t see him again for the rest of the two hour block. We meet Benjamin and Jerry, the former still running The Great Northern Hotel while the latter has entered the world of legalized marijuana…and certainly looks the part. The Giant, the One-Armed Man, Leland Palmer, Laura Palmer, Sarah Palmer, Shelly Johnson (I’m guessing her last name is different how), James Hurley, Margaret the Log Lady, Deputy Hawk, and Lucy and Andy Brennan each make an appearance throughout the run time, making this two-hour experience feel like a return home. I have to be honest, when I saw Kyle MacLachlan and Sheryl Lee in the Black Lodge together, both older but no less suave and dignified, I became emotional. These characters mean so much to so many and now we get to welcome them back into our lives.

The new characters that we meet revolve heavily around Agent Cooper’s doppelgänger and are, to put it delicately, a rather unsavory group of individuals. They are embroiled in violence and obviously up to nothing good, although we’re not yet certain of what their end goal is. Meanwhile, we also have a new line to follow where someone wants Cooper’s doppelgänger dead and is willing to pay a hefty sum for it.

The show almost immediately sets itself apart by venturing out of Twin Peaks, taking us to locations such as Las Vegas, Nevada; Buckhorn, South Dakota; and New York City, New York. By doing this, and by seeing Cooper’s doppelgänger travel in different locations, it feels like the mystery and strangeness of Twin Peaks has found a way to leak out into the rest of the United States. There is no outrunning the Black Lodge.

In New York City, we’re introduced to what appears to be a scientific experiment to find…something. The concept is that a young man has to sit and watch a glass box, which is being monitored and recorded by several cameras. When one of those cameras fills up its memory card, the young man replaces it and stores the original. During one night of his work, a local woman who he obviously knows and has interest in (a feeling she clearly reciprocates) comes up with two coffees and manages to convince him to allow her into what is supposed to be a Top Secret, classified experiment. Soon after entering, they proceed to have sex and the glass box, which has remained empty the whole time, suddenly starts seeing activity. When they stop, they see that there’s the outline of a person in this box, an outline that becomes increasingly violent and agitated. It suddenly bursts through the glass and assaults the pair, blood flying everywhere.

I bring this up because I want to address something about this revival of “Twin Peaks”: it is, without a doubt, the most violent and aggressive we’ve seen the show. There are genuinely terrifying moments throughout and the gore is surprisingly effective and shocking. There is a sense of pure aggression and rage at play here and it’s not only effective but it’s deeply disturbing. That being said, there is still that trademark Lynch humor in these episodes. There are dry, subtle moments that are wildly funny in the moment, mostly because of how absurd they are.

Another thing that should be mentioned here is that Lynch clearly has no concern about time. With 18 episodes at his disposal, he makes use of long, one-take shots, often ones where nothing of immediate interest is happening, allowing our eyes to wander and take in the strange oddness that he is known for. Furthermore, the style of storytelling at play here is unconventional, as one would expect from Lynch. Nothing seemingly connects the storylines at play here but each thread is so fascinating that the hook has been set, the bait taken.

I really want to hammer the point home that this revival is not concerned with holding your hand. There is an already established mythos upon which we are seeing everything and we must recognize that we won’t be given the answers we seek right away, if ever. All we can do is wait and connect the dots ourselves. By being on Showtime, Lynch has been given the freedom to take “Twin Peaks” into a far more outlandish and bizarre world. Unconstrained by worries of TV execs banning cursing, violence, nudity, or seemingly unfollowable storylines, “Twin Peaks” now will delve into territories we never could’ve possibly imagined.

For as much that is different and strange, these episodes felt like returning home. This is a “Twin Peaks” that is going to be far more polarizing than what we’ve already been given. However, I feel it will ultimately be far more rewarding.

Welcome back, “Twin Peaks”. It’s good to have you in our lives again.

*With apologies to Mortal Kombat.
