Hellish Adventure Inner Chains Launches on PC

Now available on PC, gamers looking for a pure horror experience should pick up Inner Chains.

From the Press Release
An FPS horror game set in a surreal, dark and deadly biomechanical world never seen before.

One does not get to set the rules in the world of Inner Chains. Humankind is just a small part of a hostile universe. Want to survive? Discover its secrets.

A planet in the distant future. A rock floating in space that is no longer what it had once been. Without human interference, nature has been adapting to the new conditions, reclaiming what was once taken away. In its pursuit of perfection, it began to assimilate with the abandoned technology giving life to biomechanical beings.

Left to its own devices, man-made technology has also changed as it tried to adjust to the new environment. A strong symbiosis soon developed between technology and nature. It became difficult to determine what is alive and what is mechanical in the world of Inner Chains.

After several million years of biomechanical evolution, mankind once again became an important part of the ecosystem. However, it hasn’t regained an advanced stage of development. As a result, the human race, oblivious to its own history, cannot fully comprehend or control the powerful technology at its disposal. The people living in the world of Inner Chains take this situation for granted and focus on using the planet’s resources to their advantage. There is also something that has not changed through the millennia: humans are still subject to basic social issues such as faith, dominance, oppression and manipulation. This led to the emergence of multiple castes, and, in consequence, to the supremacy of one particular group. They had discovered these mechanisms first, learned how to use them well that helped them rise to power. Others had to submit.

As one of the inhabitants of this world, your head is filled with the teachings of the Ruling Caste. Your only goal is to get to a mythical place called the Last Hope and leave this degenerated, dying planet once and for all. You embark on your journey full of fanatical zeal, but soon it becomes clear that nothing is what it seems in this strange world. You have to fight for survival, face hostile fauna and flora, and overcome your own weaknesses. You need to stay observant to your surroundings and explore the secrets of the game’s world. Your survival depends entirely on your watchfulness, logical judgment, quick reflexes, accuracy and the ability to use the environment to your advantage.

Coming this Summer to Spike TV is “The Mist”, a television adaptation of the Stephen King novella. Telling the story of a small town that becomes prey to a strange mist and the dangers within, the story was adapted into a film in 2007 that was directed by Frank Darabont. Now, this series will attempt to take the story one step further and really explore the possibilities that might occur when such an event happens.

Below is a new behind-the-scenes video where the cast and crew of the film show off new scenes, how shots were filmed, and explain what this show will bring to the table. Obviously there are spoilers, so I’d watch it carefully if you want to remain surprised when the series premieres.

“The Mist” stars Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Danica Curcic, Okezie Morro, Luke Cosgrove, Darren Pettie, Russell Posner, Dan Butler, Isiah Washington, Jr., and Frances Conroy. It premieres on Thursday, June 22nd, at 10pm ET/PT.

Synopsis:
“The Mist” centers around a small town family that is torn apart by a brutal crime. As they deal with the fallout, an eerie mist rolls in, suddenly cutting them off from the rest of the world and, in some cases, each other. Family, friends, and adversaries become strange bedfellows, battling the mysterious mist and its threats, fighting to maintain morality and sanity as the rules of society break down.

Frankenstein’s Monster Busts Used to Recreate Judge Dredd, Iron Maiden’s Eddie, and More

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a very important charity, at least in my eyes. Without going into too much detail, my family was the recipient of a Make-A-Wish and it was a wonderful experience. That’s why I feel like I need to write this story, as a way to help them out. Also because the full story is simply badass and I love what’s going on here.

Allow me to introduce you to Monster Charity Project, which is based in the UK. Here’s what they’ve done: they took 25 of the top sculptors and SFX artists in the United Kingdom and have given each a Frankenstein’s Monster-inspired bust, which itself was created by the University of Bolton Special & Visual Effects team [Source]. These artists were then given one instruction: turn it into whatever you want. Go nuts. Go crazy. Be as imaginative or as subtle as you like. Just have fun and make something special.

Once the artists are done with their artistic escapade, the busts are then returned to the Monster Charity Project, who will later this year auction them off online with 100% of the proceeds going to the UK Make-A-Wish Foundation. That’s right, all of the work that goes into making these busts, from the team that cast them to the artists that transform them, is donated freely of their will.

The busts will go on tour throughout the summer at various conventions, giving people the chance to see them and, hopefully, pick on one (or more) to bid for. Then, on October 31st, the online auction begins and runs until November 5th. Below are samples of the various busts that have been created!

You can follow them on Facebook or on Twitter.

Titan Unleashes 19 Tales of Urban Horror in Dark Cities

Titan has a new book out now titled Dark Cities, and it brings together some of the most exciting award-winning and bestselling authors writing in horror today, including MR Carey, Paul Tremblay, Amber Benson, and Tim Lebbon.

Edited by Bram Stoker Award winner Christopher Golden (Snowblind, Ararat, Of Saints and Shadows), this anthology of new writing takes us primarily to urban settings–shadowy back alleys, crumbling brownstones, gleaming high-rise towers, and city hall. Terrifying urban myths, malicious ghosts, cursed architecture, malignant city deities, and personal demons (in business or relationships) are twisted into something worse… virtually anything that inspires the contributors to imagine some bit of urban darkness.

Along with the authors mentioned above, additional Dark Cities contributors include Sherrilyn Kenyon, Scott Smith, Cherie Priest, Joe R. Lansdale, Seanan McGuir, and Jonathan Maberry.

Synopsis:
Today’s most talented horror writers bend their skills toward the darkness, creating brand-new tales guaranteed to keep you awake at night— especially if you live in the dark cities. Far worse than mythical creatures such as vampires and werewolves, these are horrors that lurk in the places you go every day—where you would never expect to find them. But they are there, and now that you know, you’ll never again walk the streets alone.

Did You Know That Godzilla Faced Off Against the Greek Gods?

Last summer, IDW released a mini-series titled Godzilla: Rage Across Time. Consisting of five issues, it saw the King of the Monsters battle through various periods across history, including feudal Japan, medieval England, BC-era Rome, and even back to the so-called “Age of Monsters”!

But it was the second issue of this series that showcased the true power of the giant lizard when he traveled to ancient Greece and fought against the legendary Greek Gods of old, such as Poseidon, Ares, and even Zeus himself! We’ve seen Godzilla face off against dozens of monstrous foes but going against the might of not one God but several? That’s awesome (proper definition) stuff!

The story begins when two warring human factions are utterly destroyed by the titular beast. Unaware of Godzilla, the slaughter of these factions leads the Pantheon of Greek Gods to discuss their current situation, to recognize that they are in a place where the humans recognize them but no longer call for their aid. While some of the Gods see this as an issue that needs to be addressed, Zeus, in all his ego, dismisses them and their concerns. Suddenly, Godzilla lands at the foot of Mount Olympus, a huge wave washing away the city at the foot of the mountain. It is there that the battle between Godzilla and the Gods takes place.

I won’t spoil the rest of the story for you but it’s pretty damn epic. If Godzilla can face off against the Greek Gods, I suddenly find myself wondering how he’d far against Kratos from the God of War games. Hmmm….

If you want to pick up a copy of the entire Rage Across Time series, you can do so through IDW.

NSFW Ghost Squad Trailer Stabs You in the Ass

If you have an aversion to having sharp objects shoved up your ass, I suggest you avoid the NSFW trailer for the new Japanese movie Ghost Squad.

In the film, a group of murdered young girls rise from the grave to take revenge on their killers. We see a ton of brutality in the trailer, namely a carving knife being deeply inserted into a guy’s butthole at 0:32. Revenge indeed.

We’re big fans of director Noboru Iguchi round these parts. The guy bought us Dead Sushi, RoboGeisha, The Machine Girl, and the “F is for Fart” segment of The ABCs of Death. It looks like Ghost Squad will be yet another OTT splatterfest from the guy who does them so well.

The lead characters in the film are played by members of the band Nomakes, with Iguchi himslef providing the trailer’s narration. Ghost Squad will be released in Japan later this year, and I wouldn’t blame you for now wearing a pair of steel underpants.

Here They Lie (Video Game)

Developed by Tangentlemen

Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment

Available on PS4

Do you deserve a second chance?

Does anyone?

It’s a big question with endless answers.

In Here They Lie, that’s the question you need to answer.  What’s tricky is that you need to answer it without really knowing how big or small that question is.  Do you need forgiveness?  From who, and for what?  What did you do?  What did you do???

Tangentlemen, a studio made of of veteran developers who worked on such projects as Call of Duty and Tomb Raider, have created a game that places you in the shoes of a man in pursuit of a woman in a world that starts bad and gets worse.  An initial cut scene tells you little, but hints that you’ve reunited with her, at least briefly.  You’ve suggested that you should rekindle a relationship that’s been lost…and you’re at least mostly to blame for that, given her words.  She tells you to think it over, as it’s a big decision, and off you go, onto a subway train.

And straight into hell.

Here They Lie was initially a PSVR exclusive.  However, they’ve added the ability to play the game without VR, and that’s how I played it.  I can’t speak to the VR experience, other than to say that, of course, scares would be more intense and traversing the hellish landscapes would be even more nervewracking.

In 2D, the game is still beautiful.  Absolutely stunning.  Everything is almost monochromatic.  Almost, because bursts of color appear.  Dana, the woman you pursue, is wearing a gold dress, and literally radiates with golden color.  She lights up her surroundings like a chunk of the sun, embodied in a stunningly gorgeous black woman.

Dana’s golden shine isn’t the only color.  The other color is almost entirely red.  The red of blood, of neon, of fire.

See, the city you’re left in once your initial train ride stops isn’t like any you’ve seen.  Everything has a retro feel, as if it’s something in the middle 20th century.  Even Dana’s dress and your character’s clothing (seen by looking down or into mirrors) feel so.  Yet, there are modern surveillance cameras and other anachronistic signs that this isn’t exactly any city you should know.

It becomes evident early on that you aren’t alone.  Animalistic grunts are the first sign, flashes of shadows the next.  Before long, you’ll spot one of the beasts (men?) behind the hints.  If you’re not careful, that sighting will be fatal.

That’s the crux of the gameplay here.  Similar to Outlast, you have to get from point A to point B without getting too much attention from these and other roving creatures that seek to harm you.  Death, however, isn’t a major setback.  Checkpoints are frequent and merciful.  Sometimes I found myself past a pinch point upon revival.  I can’t stand stealth gameplay, yet Here They Lie rarely got on my nerves. This isn’t nearly as involved as Outlast and similar survival horror titles.  The action is a means to an end, the story is key.  Most enemies can be bypassed with a little clever thinking and timing, but they’re also quite forgiving.  Give them a little space and you can probably escape before they lock on to murder you.

The tale becomes less and less stable and more surreal as it progresses.  As you go, you’re faced with literal horrors.  The horrors of man.  Every sin you can imagine, played out in front of you, and only rarely are you given a chance to change them.  As you move through the game, things become very confusing.  Sometimes you’re punished for doing what seems to be the “right” thing.  Others, you should clearly have the ability to change, yet can’t.  Futility is very real.

What it all means is the point of the entire affair.  Chances are you won’t be able to sort out the reason for your journey until it’s about to end, and that’s fine.  That’s another statement about life, I think.  The resolution shocked me, not because it was a traditional twist so much as it was so far outside the tale I thought I was part of.

That’s the brilliance of Here They Lie: it forces you to make choices without being capable of understanding the import of them, and then forces you to take responsibility for those choices once it’s all explained.  As such, the ending is as much of a gut-punch as the game is.

The thing I was reminded most of during the course of the game was Jacob’s Ladder.  A doomed soul traversing the city of his memory, tempted and tormented, chasing the golden ideal of everything good in his life while constantly dogged by wickedness both done to him and by him.

What did you do to Dana?  Should you give it another try?  Should you get a second chance? Do you deserve one?

I’ll tell you, few games affect me emotionally like Here They Lie did.  I wanted to stop more than once, simply because I didn’t want to be forced to face another situation like the last.  I wanted to take a shower and watch cartoons, and possibly drill a hole in my head to let the darkness out.  It’s tough, graphic, brutal stuff that wears its M rating like a crown.  Every kind of violence is represented here, stark and without glamour.

When deciding whether or not you should give Here They Lie a go, consider the following things.  It’s not terribly expensive.  I got it for around half price during a flash sale, and it’s only $20 full price.  It’s not terribly long.  I played through it over the course of an evening, maybe four hours.  There’s minimal replay value, although a post-game chapter select is available to try other choices.  The ending is up to you: you won’t change it by your actions as much as justify your own choices. The stealth action is not the focus, the story is.  You won’t play this like Outlast to stream your latest clever escape, as that’s just not the point.

I recommend it.  Highly.  It’ll scare you, unnerve you, and force you to consider possibly the most important question a human can ask themselves:
Do I deserve a second chance?

Universal Pictures Announces Their Dark Universe and Lay Out Their Future Plans

We all know that Universal is getting into the cinematic universe game alongside Marvel and DC by creating a action/adventure horror series built around their classic Monsters. Now it seems like they’re ready to go full force into this new chapter by releasing a teaser for what they’re calling their “Dark Universe”.

The below trailer takes footage from the classic monster titles that were, in many ways, the foundations for the horror world we have today. You’ll see scenes from Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and more.

Additionally, a new photo was released of Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Sofia Boutella, Johnny Depp, and Javier Bardem, the first three of whom are in the upcoming The Mummy while Depp will be starring in The Invisible Man and Bardem as Frankenstein’s Monster.

The announcement also reveals that the motion logo for this venture will be composed by Danny Elfman. We’ll be seeing it first prior to The Mummy, which opens on June 9th.

Elfman explains:

I grew up on monsters,” said Elfman. “Monsters were my life, and these iconic Universal monsters were almost like my family. I simply wouldn’t be the same without them. When I got the opportunity to compose a theme for the Dark Universe logo, of course I jumped at it. What could be more fun than connecting to this world that has always been so deeply imbedded in my psyche? I tried to find something that was new but still had some connections with the past—the origins—at least in a subtle way. Something that was looking forward to a creative, fertile, imaginative future that Dark Universe will enter, and at the same time saluting the heritage of the tragic heroes (or anti-heroes) of my childhood. To the Monsters!!!!

It is also confirmed that Bill Condon will be directing Bride of Frankenstein, which will be the next title in the Dark Universe franchise. While we were supposed to get another entry on April 13th, 2018, that has been cancelled for Condon’s entry, which will bow on February 14th, 2019.

I’m very excited to bring a new Bride of Frankenstein to life on screen, particularly since James Whale’s original creation is still so potent,” stated Condon. “The Bride of Frankenstein remains the most iconic female monster in film history, and that’s a testament to Whale’s masterpiece—which endures as one of the greatest movies ever made.”

The most important piece of information that came with this reveal is that the thread that connects each of the films has been laid out:
At its organizing principle, Dark Universe films are connected by a mysterious multi-national organization known as Prodigium. Led by the enigmatic and brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll, Prodigium’s mission is to track, study and—when necessary—destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world. Working outside the aegis of any government, and with practices concealed by millennia of secrecy, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilized society…and will go to any length to contain it.

This sounds wildly ambitious and, to be honest, I’m 100% into it! Give me this universe and everything that it has to offer!

Judge Dredd: Mega City One – Producers Want Karl Urban to Return

We told you about the new series “Judge Dredd: Mega City One” a couple of weeks ago, and recently on the 2000 AD Thrillcast, producer Brian Jenkins, and executive producers Jason Kingsley and Mark Stern sat down to talk a bit about what to expect from the series including (within the first 5-minutes) who they’d like to have play Dredd!

The great thing about Karl [Urban who played the character in Dredd] is, he’s actually a big fan of the comic book, and he’s a really nice guy, and I know him well enough to speak to him personally,” said Kingsley. “We have had many conversations prior to this about all sorts of different things. He’s also a very busy full-time professional actor. So, we are going to have some long and complicated conversations, I would imagine, and we’ll see where we go. It’s too easy to tell yet. But if we can use him, and he is available to us, then I think that would be absolutely brilliant.

The guys also revealed that they’re looking ahead at potentially delivering 5 to 10 seasons and maybe some spinoffs. The future is wondrously dark for Judge Dredd! We cannot wait to see where this goes. Check out the whole show below.

James Wan to Produce Resident Evil Reboot

It was only yesterday we posted that, after six entries, Germany’s Constantin Film would be rebooting the Resident Evil film franchise with a new six-film run. Now it’s come out via Deadline that James Wan will be producing the first of these films, which is going to be based on a script by Greg Russo, who wrote the upcoming Mortal Kombat adaptation (which Wan is also producing). The film will also apparently feature a brand new cast. No director for the project has been announced.

Wan is incredibly busy being a producer these days, getting behind projects such as Mortal Kombat, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Insidious: Chapter 4 and is an executive producer on the upcoming Saw: Legacy. Even though he’s directing Aquaman for the DC cinematic universe, it seems like he’s happy keeping one foot firmly planted in horror!

Stare into a Demon Hole at Cannes

Yep, there’s nothing funnier than looking a demon square in his hole. Or something like that! A new horror comedy is buzzing around Cannes as Screen Daily reports that UK sales outfit SC Films has boarded international sales rights to completed US horror-comedy Demon Hole.

Demon Hole charts the fallout after a fracking crew drills a hole on sacred Native American land unleashing an ancient demon, which then terrorizes six teens serving community service in a remote forest.

Writer-director is Josh Crook, producer is Lori Crook and exec producer is Allen Bain, producer of Rachid Bouchareb’s Just Like a Woman and 2014 US action feature Revenge of the Green Dragons.

Cast includes Samantha Scaffidi, Austin Ramsey, Paris Campbell, Summer Bills and Adrian Denzel.

Crook said: “The current crop of horror movies has gotten too severe and grim. While scary, they’re also depressing. Taking influence from John Hughes as much as it does John Carpenter and Wes Craven, Demon Hole brings the vibe of the 1980s back and invites the audience to enjoy the ride.

More as it comes. Check out the first stills below.

Cage Dive Becomes Open Water: Cage Dive

2003’s Open Water was a pretty scary little movie that stood completely on its own. In 2006 Hans Horn’s tepid film Adrift got rebranded in the U.S. as Open Water 2: Adrift. Now, over a decade later, just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water for a true sequel comes another rebranding!

Screen Daily is reporting that Australian sales outfit Odin’s Eye has closed a number of key deals on director Gerald Rascionato’s first-person shark thriller Cage Dive, which will be rebranded Open Water: Cage Dive for a number of key markets including the U.S.

Cage Dive follows three American tourists making an audition tape of them shark cage diving to submit to an extreme reality show. But a catastrophic turn of events leaves them stranded in baited waters of South Australia, surrounded by hungry great white sharks. The film was produced by Rascionato’s Just One More Productions and Charles Barsamian’s Exit Strategy Productions.
