Dread Central's Regrets, Reviews, and Regards - Sometimes We Suck

We admit it. We're not always right. In fact, like everyone else sometimes we miss the mark by a mile. Still, one man's trash is another's treasure, and in that spirit we'd like to take this time to poke a little fun at ourselves and look back at some of the reviews we get no end of shit for.

Now, be it known... most of us here at Dread Central will stick to our guns and say fuck it, we liked what we liked! Popular opinion be damned! However, there are a few listed here that we wish we could take back or just completely rewrite. Were we caught up in the moment? Were we on some mind-altering substance? Drunk maybe? Or did we just plain like a stinker? You decide as we take a look back at some of our worst moments.

Dread Central's Regrets, Reviews, and Regards - Sometimes We Suck

Let's start with me. I have two flicks that I gave positive reviews to that will haunt me to my grave...

Uncle Creepy
Tamara (review) and The Devil Inside (review).

Looniest Quotes
"Tamara is a well crafted, solid little film that will thrill you, chill you, and at times make your skin crawl."

"The Devil Inside is home to moments that will shock, scare, disturb, and leave you gasping."

It'll never cease to amaze me how the 3 or 3 1/2 out of 5 rated movies can be the most controversial amongst the fan base. The thing is, I genuinely liked these two flicks and had a blast with each of 'em. Sure, one was derivative and the other was missing an ending! What can I say? One thing's for sure, though - I heard you guys loud and clear. You've made me humble... old country style.

The Foywonder
The Gingerdead Man (review) and the The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (review).

Looniest Quotes
"Like any good snack treat The Gingerdead Man is non-nutritious, but it just tastes so damn good."

"The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, though not great by any means, is fairly entertaining (up to a point) in an in-one-ear-and-out-the-other, use once and dispose sort of way. It’s not even anywhere near as aggressive in its idiocy as the previous two."

You know some would say that Foy should be cut some slack given the amount of bullets he's taken for the team, but hey, no one is twisting his arm to watch the entire Asylum film catalog!

Matt (Masked Slasher) Fini
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (review) and The Wolfman (review).

Looniest Quotes
"It’s the same Haddonfield from John Carpenter’s film – only seventeen years older and more battered. After the debacle of transforming the Myers house into a Gothic mansion in Halloween 5, Chappelle deserves some credit for taking Part 6 back to the aesthetic basics of the original."

"The Wolfman works because Johnston approaches the material with an obvious love and respect for the werewolf mythos. Not only does the moon have a beautifully foreboding presence throughout the course of the film, but the titular beast is plagued both by ghastly nightmares and a disorienting increase in his senses to help convey the “curse” of lycanthropy."

Matt is a really eccentric kind of viewer as he can find some good in just about everything whether it's there or not. He cannot be warned off a bad movie, and he'll buy a shitty flick on Blu-ray just to have it. Yep, in some ways you have to respect that.

Heather (TheHorrorChick) Wixson
Platinum Dunes' A Nightmare on Elm Street (review) and Piranha 3DD (review).

Looniest Quotes
"The solid performances, stunning cinematography and visuals, and revamped and brutal Freddy make this A Nightmare on Elm Street worth checking out. "

"Piranha 3DD could very well be the most fun genre fans will have at the multiplex this summer."

We love Heather. Rarely will you find someone more enthusiastic about the horror genre, and believe me when I tell you this chick is as legit a fan as they come. However, sometimes her enthusiasm ends up getting a bit of the best of her, and when that happens ... OOF!

Buz "Danger" Wallick
There can be only one for The Buz, and it is Shark Swarm (review).

Looniest Quotes
"Most killer shark movies these days are nothing short of awful, but Shark Swarm kept me entertained the whole way through, and it rightfully deserves its place as one of the better films in the killer animal movie genre"

"The pacing is also a plus. Coming in at 164 minutes, it is a pretty long watch. However, it really doesn't feel that long because the shark attacks just keep coming, and it doesn't let up. Needless to say, I was never bored. "

Meet Buz. Buz likes movies with sharks in them. Maybe a little too much!

Andrew Kasch
As I am haunted by mine, Andrew will be FOREVER haunted by his love for Platinum Dune's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (review).

Looniest Quotes
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is the real deal - the very film the remake aspired and failed to be. Not only is it the best installment in the Chainsaw canon since Tobe Hooper's original, it's also the most brutal film to ever emerge from a studio. No hyperbole. No bullshit."

"This is a rare case of all the right talents coming together to produce something truly unforgettable."

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is not only the biggest surprise of 2006, it may very well be the best horror film of the year."

Andrew now reflects on this review with disdain. He insists he can take it back and cites it as a momentary lapse of reason. Sorry, dude, you made your bed. Fucking sleep in it!

Debi (The Woman in Black) Moore

While not a misfire review by any means, Deb took no end of flack for her opinion on Moon (review).

Looniest Quote
"There's been some quibbling as to whether or not Moon falls in the horror category, but with its thick coating of dread and a menacing evil controlling the whole thing -- that says horror to me."

And there lies the line. The single line that kept the comments section cooking for days. It's always a struggle around here to decide what we should and shouldn't be covering. What do YOU think? Tell us below.

Jinx
Our newest reviewer found himself in a shitstorm this week for daring to like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (review).

Looniest Quotes
"Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is a far better (and far more enjoyable) romp that more closely captures the edgy comic book that serves as its inspiration."

"If you’re a fan of comic-booky horror flicks with loads of inventive action, do yourself a favor: forget that wretched initial installment and give this one a shot."

Welcome to the party, pal! See that cross? Hang from it with glee as with that last review you've officially joined the "Are you fucking kidding me?" club. Nomad liked the movie, too. Speaking of which ..

Nomad
Hannibal Rising (review) and My Soul to Take (review).

Looniest Quotes
"Hannibal Rising is a slick and horrifying ride you are forced to experience at the edge of a knife."

"Vintage Craven in top form. I’m actually still mulling over the magical quality that makes this so."

Agree with him, love him, or hate him, Nomad has sparked no end of conversation for some of his reviews, and while sometimes we cannot help but ask, "Seriously, what the fuck were you thinking?", you just can't help but be curious. Bonus point for him for writing the only perfect review Uwe Boll has ever received with his take on Postal (review).

So there you have it, kids. Some of our absolute worst moments. Sure there's more, but these will do for now. Right, wrong, it doesn't matter really, and in the end what YOU think is all that really counts. There's only one thing I can tell you as a fact - we do this because we love it and we love you, no matter how much shit you give us. It's your passion that fuels our passion. We may not always be right, but we'll always do our best to be honest and here for you cats. Warts and all.

Joe Cornish Heads to Snow Crash for Paramount

After the glory of Attack the Block, there is no film director Joe Cornish can make that will not get our attention. Given the fact that the latest film opus he's about to tackle, Snow Crash, involves some good old fashioned brain frying material, well that's just a bonus!

Deadline reports that Cornish has been set to write and direct the Neal Stephenson novel Snow Crash. The book has just been reacquired by Paramount Pictures, with Kathleen Kennedy and Kennedy/Marshall producing.

It’s the second go around on the project for Paramount, which first developed the book back when it was published in 1992. It is a big bestseller and a seminal cyber-punk book that probably was ahead of its time. The book is set in the near future, when the U.S. exists as a patchwork of corporate-franchise city-states, and private enterprise and the mafia control everything. The plot involves a computer virus that is manifested as a drug called Snow Crash that is transmitted visually from computer screens to unsuspecting users, frying their brains. Hiro Protagonist – that’s the character’s name – a computer hacker/samurai swordsman/pizza delivery driver who investigates and tries to stop the takeover of postmodern civilization. It sounds wild, but it is steeped in its own mythology and has become a cult favorite among the cyberpunk set.

Paramount dropped the project years ago, and it went to Disney with Kennedy/Marshall and languished. Kennedy introduced Cornish to the book, he committed, and it is now back at Paramount and is a priority.

Extreme Body Modification Takes Center Stage in Soska Sisters' Follow-Up American Mary

After months of speculating, head-scratching, hand-wringing and a teaser trailer that evoked more questions than it answered, the secret is finally out. Just what is the Soska sisters' new film American Mary all about?

The answer: underground, extreme body modification.

Dread Central was recently lucky enough to sit down with the Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska, and discuss American Mary. To describe the experience, interviewing the Soskas is like trying to hug a beehive…incredibly intense energy, tireless activity and the sense that even though you're dealing with multiple entities, there's an overall feeling of single-mindedness and unity. The Soskas are an incredible breath of fresh air, and after the success of their unique first film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the ladies are looking to solidify their place in the horror community. Judging by early response, American Mary is just the film to do it for them.

Extreme Body Modification Takes Center Stage in Soska Sisters' Follow-Up, American Mary

"American Mary follows the story of Mary Mason, played by Katharine Isabelle, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted by medical school and surgeons she once admired," Sylvia Soska explained. "The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries that leaves more marks on Mary than her freakish clientele."

Jen Soska added, "In a way, American Mary is a metaphor for our own journey through the film industry,", alluding to the fact that the people who look the most trustworthy and perfect are often anything but.

So how do two filmmakers who are fresh off a film like Dead Hooker in a Trunk, which Sylvia describes as "a love letter to grindhouse," come up with something as intriguing and original as body modification as a subject for their next film? "If Sylvia sees something horrible on the internet, she likes to either ruin someone's night by showing it to them unexpectedly, or she becomes obsessed with it," Jen said. "She did this once with our short film Bad Girls, where she saw a break and entering where a grandmother got beaten with an umbrella. That was very significant to her so we made that film."

"I saw the pictures afterwards of what this woman looked like, and it scarred me," Sylvia said. "I was like, why don't we do a short where we have this old lady grandma just beaten to fucking death? I thought it was a great idea and people would be moved by it…but no. They were so angry."

Although Sylvia's beaten grandmother inspiration didn't go over so well, things are looking much brighter for American Mary, which was inspired similarly. "So once upon a time, Sylvia is on the internet looking for something horrible, and she finds this image of these two identical twin brother surgeons," Jen said. "One of them had his arm voluntarily amputated and connected to the sternum of his brother so he just has this dead hanging arm. And the other one, the one with the hanging arm on him, cuts off a finger from his brother and he has it put onto his finger so he has an elongated finger, and the caption says that you have to be an identical twin to understand why we did this. We thought it was completely real, and it wasn't until much later that we found out it was an April Fool's joke by Body Mod Extreme Magazine."

Sylvia continued her sister's story, as the duo are frequently apt to do, feeding off each other's comments as the lively interview rolled on. "Because it disturbed me so much, I became obsessed with body modification. It's almost like plastic surgery in a way, but it's surgery that's not accepted by anybody who exists today and they can't even get their procedures done legally. We had Russ Fox, who is really big in body modification, as our flesh artist consultant on American Mary. And he wanted to get licensed as a medical professional to do this, and a lot of what he does is fixing hack job operations that people get in hotel rooms from these random guys and they won't let people do it because it's not considered ideal beauty or acceptable. They always claim people have some kind of mental illness when they do this."

"I think plastic surgery is more accepted because it's the universal idea of what is beautiful," Jen said, "but if you're getting a tit job, you can't really say 100 percent that's for you. That's what other people probably think is beautiful. If you get a split tongue or horns, you're doing that, more likely than not, just for yourself because you're not trying to fit into someone else's aspect of what is beautiful. Why is it acceptable to cut open your tits, slip some plastic in, sew it up and say, 'Look, it's beautiful.'" To which Sylvia replied reflectively, "Well, a good tit job is kinda beautiful."

Upon researching the world of underground body modification, Sylvia discovered that an interesting trend is occurring. "I found out that medical students, because they're so hurting for money, will meet you off in a hotel room and do it because they'll get paid and they kind of have experience. There's a little bit of that in American Mary." Funny, they never mentioned anything like that on "Grey's Anatomy."

And no matter how interesting horror fans may find the world of body modification, it's not the easiest sell in the world for filmmakers. "When we first were pitching the film around, because of the content of body modification, Sylvia would open with "Have you heard about body modification?" and people would think subincised penises, amputations, weird shit done, and people would automatically shut off," Jen said. "We tried to explain the film isn't going to be Hostel, it's not going to be Saw. It's going to be horrific, but we're going to very tastefully show and shoot the parts that you would find really disturbing."

But don't be fooled into thinking American Mary is going to be anything but an extreme experience, combining an intriguing story, great performances and an incredible F/X team. "We were looking around for an F/X team, and in Vancouver there is only one place. That's MastersFX," Jen said. "They are fucking awesome! They are absolutely phenomenal, working around the clock. I cannot say enough good things about Todd Masters and MastersFX."

Sylvia added, "Not only did we have MastersFX come on board, we had people from the actual body modification community coming on board and just being themselves. Seeing the mix between them and the characters in makeup, the thing is, nobody could ever tell the difference." That's impressive F/X work.

Sylvia continued, "The closest anyone has ever come to doing body modification was Clive Barker with Hellraiser, but nobody was really interested. So he turned them into these demons and called them Cenobites."

As for the name, American Mary? "I wanted to pick the most powerful female name I could think of," Sylvia said. "I was thinking Mary Mother of God, Mary Magdalene (because there's a little bit of that in there)…and Mary Harron, who's one of my favorite directors. She directed American Psycho. She first taught me about making more controversial pieces, and I always wanted to make something that pissed people off. And considering that people have gotten ill during test screenings and people have run out during certain scenes of the movie, I think we did it."

The Soskas drew inspiration from many foreign works, noting that there has been a bit of a lull in American horror, especially theatrical releases. Jen said, "I think something fucked up happened in North America where we now think 'horror' means 'slasher' and if we couldn't come up with a slasher, we just did fucking remakes again. So the most interesting things are coming from other parts of the world right now."

Fans of the Soskas' previous film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, will certainly be wondering what similarities their second effort has to their original offering. One thing you can count on is the twisted Soska humor returning in full bloom. "You're gonna know who the sick fucks in the audience are," Jen said. "There are moments that are very laugh out loud, but there are moments where you have to be one of the dark creatures to be laughing."

"I'm so passionate about this movie," Sylvia said. "I get so fucking focused on what this needs to look like and what the characters need to do, I don't see anything else. I love stories about outcasts and people who people don't usually understand. Jen and I were horribly teased growing up. We were teased, we were spat on, they called us witches, they beat us up and threw us in lockers."

"We were not popular at all," Jen remarked.

"They called us 'The Fitzgerald Sisters' so we watched Ginger Snaps," Sylvia said, "and that was the first time we saw Katie."

Katie, of course, is Katharine Isabelle, who plays the lead role of Mary Mason. Sylvia met Katharine several years ago on the set of Josie and the Pussycats and vowed to one day work with the actress. I was watching her career and loved Ginger Snaps," Sylvia said, "but she just kept getting these roles and you see her with Pacino in Insomnia and see her with Halle Berry. She can pull her fucking weight."

"She's a very talented actress, but for whatever reason, because Ginger Snaps was such a pivotal film for her career and for horror as well, everyone got so caught up in casting her as the angsty teenager, chain-smoking and swearing all the time, but she's a woman," Jen said. "She's grown the fuck up. She needed something that was a mature role. She's great in everything she does, but I've always wanted to see her in something grown-up and mature and complex and dark, and Mary is definitely that part."

You can also count on seeing a Soska cameo, but it may be the last one for a while. "I'd say it's a cameo, but it's a very pivotal role," Jen said. "It's a 'look at me' cameo. You're going to be waiting for it and it's going to be hinted at before you see it, but there's a pretty good payoff. If you're going to step back from acting, you might as well do it with a bang."

And, of course, the million dollar question is where and when will we be able to see American Mary? The Twisted Twins were tight-lipped about the distribution information, but those tight lips were smiling. "There are a lot of interested parties in American Mary," Jen said, "and there's one large interested party that's already claimed some of her. And there's lots to claim."

And although they are completed immersed in the world of Mary right now, the Soskas do have a couple of irons in the fire for the future, including word that they will be hosting several episodes of the rumored Chainsaw Sally Show: Season 3. "It's so cool to see indies like this," Sylvia said. "Those guys (JimmyO and April Burril and the Forbidden Pictures team) work so fucking hard. It's all about social media and promoting. It's about getting word out there."

And as she often does, Jen finished her sister's thought. "There's a fucking billion of us indie filmmakers so you need to be out there. You need to see people doing the same thing as you and you need to collaborate…and they're fucking masters of that.

We will keep you updated on any and all American Mary news. The Soska sisters are set to explode, and American Mary is the match to light the fuse. For now dig on the newest poster for the film, which has the first image of Katharine Isabelle as Mary. Enjoy! More news as we get it.

Be sure to hit up the American Mary Facebook page and the official Twisted Twins Productions website, where you'll find more links to the talented duo's Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Vimeo pages.

Exclusive Interview: Filmmaker Jesse Thomas Cook Talks Monster Brawl, Ejecta and More

$

In Jesse Thomas Cook’s Monster Brawl, we see the Canadian filmmaker blend both his love for the horror genre and classic ‘80s professional wrestling in the flick that features eight classic movie monsters fighting in the ultimate death match set in a haunted graveyard.

The independent horror/comedy/wrestling hybrid stars Dave Foley, Art Hingle and Lance Henriksen as the narrator as well as a handful of professional wrestlers including Kevin Nash, “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart and Robert Maillet.

Monster Brawl hit DVD and Blu-ray shelves everywhere this week, and in honor of the flick’s recent release courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment, Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat with Cook about his ambitious project as well as whether or not fans can expect to see Monster Brawl 2 in the future- or perhaps even a bigger budget remake of the flick, which could very well be in the works soon.

Check out the highlights of our exclusive interview with Cook below, and make sure to check out Monster Brawl now that it is available everywhere!

Dread Central: I'd love to start off by hearing more about how Monster Brawl came about and more on your approach to creating this world where you blend together both horror and wrestling- two of my own personal faves.

Jesse Thomas Cook: Mine too; I knew that both professional wrestling and horror movies- especially the classic movie monsters- have huge followings so that was a huge draw for me. But I guess this all really starts off with us wanting to create a production company that would produce 10 films in our home town of Collingwood up here in Canada. We wanted to start off with a flagship film that would be our calling card and would get us noticed, and I figured that something that blended horror and wrestling would definitely appeal to a lot of people out there.

So we began throwing around ideas to do a comedy/horror movie, and that's when I started thinking of all the different kinds of monsters that everyone loves and how much fun it would be to see them take on each other, kind of similar to Freddy vs. Jason but with an actual wrestling setting. Doing it in an isolated pay-per-view style event helped with the fact that one, we couldn't afford a bunch of extras and two, you wouldn't want a bunch of monsters on the loose anyway- so the graveyard idea really worked for us.

Dread Central: Considering that you guys made this independently and had to come up with a handful of monsters, did it ever strike you while putting this together just how ambitious a movie concept like this really is? Did you guys have to make any concessions because of the budget?

Jesse Thomas Cook: Oh yeah, it was definitely ambitious from the start just because we were creating something that we didn’t think had ever been done before, but then as we started putting all the pieces in place for production, I think we all then realized just how ambitious all of this would end up being for the budget. We only had 20 days to shoot everything, and our schedule included 20 different locations and working with 40 actors, too, so it was definitely a monumental challenge to say the very least.

And yeah, we did have to make some concessions. There was always talk of having a sasquatch and yeti tag team, but those are both expensive creatures so they had to come out. We also had an idea of a group of zombies versus a group of trolls, but that would have been really expensive so it never really worked out. Maybe for the next one (laughs).

Dread Central: Well let's talk about the creatures and how you went about the design of them for the film. Who did you work with for all the effects?

Jesse Thomas Cook: We worked with a special effects team in Canada called The Brothers Gore. When I approached them with this concept and my budget, they were kind of shocked I think because of what we were trying to accomplish, but they somehow made it all work. They had to get really creative with the monster makeup because every single day they had a different monster to make up, which isn't something they were used to. Usually each make-up works for a few days, but we didn't have that kind of luxury with our time. But they really did a fantastic job, and I couldn't be happier.

Coming up with the designs, or our original spin on certain monsters, was something I worked on with a friend named Jason Brown. We approached it by trying to appease the classic monster fans out there but giving fans a few new monster hybrids to root for, too, so that's why there are some female monsters or a monster like Swamp Gut who is a hybrid of all the swamp creatures we've met throughout the years and comes off like a monster version of King Kong Bundy or Yokozuna. The monsters had to work within the classic wrestling gimmicks, too, and I think we pulled it off.

Dread Central: As someone who is also a huge fan of '80s wrestling and grew up watching guys like Kevin Nash and Jimmy Hart, can you talk more about casting them and what they brought to the table on this project. Did you let them go off script at all since they're both guys who have made a living cutting some great promos?

Jesse Thomas Cook: Jimmy Hart was a blast to work with; not only was he fun to watch on camera, but he was just an all-around great guy. We never asked him to, but between takes and stuff, he'd be running around set helping out by moving things or setting up props which was really cool. He was really a team player. He mostly stuck to the script, but we did do some takes where he just cut his own material and there's some really funny stuff there. That's in some of the outtakes.

And I knew from very early on in the process of Monster Brawl that I wanted to have Kevin Nash on this because he's got such a great presence. We needed someone who could stare down Frankenstein and Nash was the guy.

Dread Central: Well, because of the ending I would suspect you guys may have plans for more Monster Brawl in the future? Is that the plan then because I could see the potential for a bunch more matches with all the monsters you guys couldn't do this first time around.

Jesse Thomas Cook: Well, it's sort of interesting; we have developed a story for a sequel and it would be much bigger than the first one, with a bigger budget, too, but there is also talk of a remake right now and we’re exploring that as well. Either way, we have three more projects this year which are our main focus so we’re kind of focusing on them for now. But yes, we’re definitely open to expanding this into a franchise if presented with the right opportunity.

Dread Central: Are you allowed to talk at all about those other three projects yet?

Jesse Thomas Cook: Well, I can talk about the one we just announced that we finished in May called Ejecta. It’s a high concept sci-fi film that was written by Tony Burgess, who did a brilliant job on Pontypool a few years back now. He's going to be working with us on the others, too, but Ejecta looks pretty cool so far. It's definitely a lot darker and more ambitious than Monster Brawl, and that's what we want to keep doing- changing things up so we're not always making the same movie again and again.

E3 2012: Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Preview

$

0

High Moon Studios did something somewhat unexpected with 2010’s Transformers: War for Cybertron: They made a Transformers game that was actually not mediocre as most fans were expecting. In fact, it turned out to be pretty damn good.

In the follow-up, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, they seem to be taking lessons learned from the original and expanding on them in some exciting ways. Fall of Cybertron picks up shortly after the events of the previous game. Cybertron is infected with Dark Energon, and the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons is still raging. With little hope left and the final battle looming on the horizon, the two warring factions have to reach a decision that’s been a long time coming. Cybertron doesn’t have much longer; it’s time to find a new home.

At E3 I had a chance to get some hands-on time with two of the campaign missions they were showing off, one featuring returning favorite Bumblebee and another featuring new inclusion to the game franchise Grimlock as well as enjoy some face time with J.D. Livergood, producer at Activision, which you can see below.

Bumblebee handles exactly how you’d expect him to if you’ve played the previous game, or really any recent third person shooter. There’s plenty of shooting action with various weapons, machine guns, rocket launchers and the like, as well as the ability to transform into a car for a little faster paced action, but it’s more or less the same feeling as what you’ve played before. That’s not to say it’s bad, just more of what you’ve already experienced. The real excitement that’s to be had is from the new inclusions to the game, such as the one I was able to try out, Grimlock.

Grimlock is a bruiser, eschewing the use of guns in favor of a more in-your-face melee approach. Being a massive, unstoppable monster allows you to wade into large groups of enemies and absolutely wreck anything that gets in your path. It’s not all beat-downs, however. Although Grimlock is much more durable than the other Transformers, he’s still able to be taken out. And there’s only one way to get his health back up: more devastation. With a mechanic similar to one of my favorite games from last year,Warhammer 40k: Space Marine, you refill your health by getting in close to an enemy and performing an execution finishing move. But, of course, that’s only one side of Grimlock’s coin.

Grimlock’s transformation doesn’t work the same as the other characters; his is only available when you’ve dished out and received enough damage to fill up a rage meter. And after you’ve managed to do that, well, that’s when the fun really begins.

If you’re a fan of the franchise, you’re already aware of what Grimlock’s transformation is. If you’re not, allow me to explain why it’s such a big deal. See, Grimlock isn’t your ordinary Transformer that can turn himself into something boring like a car or a truck. He doesn’t even become something a little more exciting than that, like a tank or a jet. No, it’s much more fun than any of that. Grimlock transforms himself into a freakin’ dinosaur, more specifically a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Transforming from a massive, unstoppable monster into a massive, unstoppable monster that’s also a dinosaur is just as exciting as it sounds. Your standard melee attack becomes an area of effect stomp that destroys anything within its radius. Your execution move becomes a much more devastating chomping attack. And you get Grimlock’s first taste of ranged combat: the ability to breathe fire. It doesn’t last forever, as your rage meter will deplete while you’re in the transformed mode, but it’s incredible while it lasts. And it just gives you that much more incentive to build that rage meter back up so you can get your prehistoric domination on once again.

In addition to the single player campaign, there will once again be a significant multiplayer mode as well. They haven’t revealed a lot of information on that front as of yet, but they did drop a couple of interesting tidbits:

First off, in a move that I’m sure many people have been dreaming of for quite a long time now, you can basically build your own Transformer. As is expected nowadays in online multiplayer shooters, you can customize your load out of weapons and perks. On top of that, however, you’re now also able to customize your entire gigantic transforming robot form. Throw on some new arms or legs, a new body, or even wings on your Transformer and then add a custom paint job to make it truly your own.

They also announced Escalation mode, which they described as being similar to the now pervasive Horde mode from Gears of War. While they didn’t give out any solid details, you can probably imagine how that’s going to play. A team of dudes versus an enemy force that increases in size and difficulty as you defeat wave after wave until none are left standing.

War for Cybertron was a pleasant surprise when it released in 2010. While it didn’t really break new ground mechanically, it finally gave Transformers fans a legitimately solid game and not something they would suffer through just because it featured their favorite characters. And from the looks of things, Fall of Cybertron will be an extremely worthy follow-up. With more action the fans have come to know and love, an expanded multiplayer mode and, of course, Dinobots, fans may finally have a little light at the end of the Bay engulfed tunnel.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron rolls out on August 28th for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

Hold Hands with The Host

A new still from the big screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's The Host is here, and it's pretty damned sappy. Not in the slimy way either. We're talking postcard to the in-laws sappy. We feel dirty. Look if you must.

Open Road Films previously acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film version of Meyer’s best-selling novel The Host, which has been directed by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca), who also wrote the screenplay. It stars Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, The Lovely Bones).

Look for it in theatres on March 29, 2013.

Synopsis:
The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

Recently the young lass who'll be terrifying audiences as Carrie White, Chloe Moretz, spoke a bit about her preparation for the role and what to expect when the flick gets here. We have to say we like what we're hearing! Read on!

I am changing everything about me—my hair, my look,” Moretz tells Vanity Fair. “I’m doing my own take on [the character]. The script is totally different from the [original]. It’s more like the book. It’s a more Black Swan version—it messes with your mind. You’ll see things, and you don’t know if you’ve seen them.

When she returns to set, she’ll meet Julianne Moore, who plays Carrie’s terrifying mother. “I don’t know if we are supposed to bond [because of our characters’ relationship], but I feel like we both will because we’re both cool,” Moretz joked.

Carrie stars Julianne Moore as Margaret White, Carrie's mom, Gabriella Wilde in the role of Sue Snell, Portia Doubleday as Chris Hargensen, Judy Greer as Miss Desjardin, the gym teacher, Alex Russell, Ansel Elgort, and of course Chloe Moretz in the title role.

Look for Kim Peirce's Carrie to be in theatres on March 15, 2013.

In the story shy high school student Carrie White (Chloe Moretz) is raised by a nightmarish religious fanatic mother (Moore) and comes to grip with devastating telepathic powers just as she reaches puberty. She eventually uses those gifts for lethal means when fellow classmates use the prom as an excuse to humiliate her before the entire school in a parable about bullying.

Sissy Spacek played the character in the first movie, with Piper Laurie playing her mother, and Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, John Travolta, Betty Buckley, and William Katt rounding out the cast. Both Spacek and Laurie got Oscar nominations for their work in the 1976 film.

New Director in Talks for James Wan's House of HorrorsWith the departure of Xavier Gens from Dimension Films' House of Horror comes word of a new director looking to take the helm of the James Wan presented scare fest from a screenplay by Max La Bella. Read on for details.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Will Canon (Brotherhood) is in talks to get behind the camera. In addition, Maria Bello is said to still be in talks to star as Dr. Elizabeth Klein. Look for more info on this soon.

Synopsis
The Devil made me do it.

The House of Horror is a horror-thriller that centers around a gruesome crime scene. The film is shot with a blend of found footage, interrogation video, news cameras and classical cinematography. The film focuses on the aftermath of an horrific massacre: five college students, brutally murdered inside a decrepit, abandoned home.

We are thrown right into the mix as the lead Detective, Mark Lewis, and the police department’s psychologist, Dr. Elizabeth Klein, question a suspect. The young man at the center is John Ascot, bound by handcuffs in a mobile command station. During the interrogation John explains everything leading up to the deaths of his friends.

We discover that they were amateur ghost-hunters, seeking out paranormal phenomenon at the abandoned house believed to be haunted. What started out as a harmless activity turned into something truly terrifying and more than they ever could bargain for. John explains to the police that he isn’t responsible for his friends’ deaths, but rather, it was the house. He tells them he believes the house is a gateway to hell, a place of concentrated evil.

We slowly witness an eerie change in John's demeanor through the course of the movie. Things take a disturbing turn when John hints at the notion that he is possessed by the Devil. Detective Lewis and Dr. Klein are forced to unravel the mystery of how John’s friends were murdered. All this leads to a stunning revelation about the man they’ve been interrogating and a gut-wrenching conclusion.

Zombie Quest Makes Board Games Fun Again

Zombie Quest is a whole new experience on board games for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Zombie Quest will put you into an engaging atmosphere where you will battle villains with supernatural powers and avoid treacherous traps to finish the game!

From the Press Release
Zombie Quest is a new spin on the board games genre. Instead of reproducing the classic board and playing pieces, we have built the game from the ground up to infuse it with an appealing atmosphere of fun and thrill. Zombie Quest isn’t about moving faceless stones along the board. It’s about the courage to go into a lair of a notorious villain and to face his quirky minions. Zombie Quest has an amazing gameplay and characters are really cartoony and funny.

Each Zombie Quest level is more difficult than the previous one. You’ll stay engaged all the game long. Of course, you’ll gain many achievements during the game, but it’s not the only bonus. When you beat a level, it’s unlocked for a pass and play game. So as a reward for having fun you get unlimited hours of entertainment with your friends.

Zombie Quest attracts seasoned board game veterans with its new novel feeling as we haven’t copied a board game. We have been inspired with a classic hexagon, but we have added new features and balanced them precisely. You and each of your enemies will possess limited supernatural powers that spice up the game. Treacherous traps make each battle unique. Zombie Quest is always fun and it has an immense replayability as it’s hard to imply the perfect hexagon strategy when you play it.

You can visit the official Zombie Quest website to learn more.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

$

Father's Day: the hallowed holiday where we celebrate dads everywhere, even the shining examples of fatherhood that see fit to terrorize their offspring as if they were the enemy. Wait! Those aren't the dads we want to celebrate! They're part of the problem!

Bad parenting seems to be a bit of a trend when it comes to horror, and we've got 13 daddies, a mixed bag of the good and bad, to celebrate the upcoming holiday...and perhaps make you appreciate your own father a little more.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

First we celebrate the dedicated dads who'd do anything for their children – as few as there seem to be in fiction, that is.

Rick Grimes, “The Walking Dead”
Actor: Andrew Lincoln

A dedicated father through and through, Rick's first actions upon waking from his coma are searching for his wife and son in the midst of the zombie apocalypse, which has been raging on at that point for quite some time. Though flawed as a husband and a father, Rick's always trying to do right by his family, even when he hits a few rough spots along the way. Carl may not be the ideal son, but readers of the comics and viewers of the TV series certainly can't question the love Rick has for his son.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

The Father, Let Me In
Actor: Richard Jenkins

Even though Abby, the child vampire seen in the American remake of cult classic Let the Right One In, isn't truly his daughter, the lengths The Father will go to in order to ensure her safety are admirable – stalking and murdering victims to retrieve blood to feed Abby. Though his intentions are considerably less noble in Let The Right One In (as portrayed by Per Ragnar), The Father is shown as a caring father figure who only wants to ensure his special companion's safety...and satiety.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Frank Carveth, The Brood
Actor: Art Hindle

After Frank Carveth starts noticing strange bruises and other marks on his daughter, Candice, after a recent visit with her mother (from whom he's now divorced on the grounds that she's insane), he knows something freaky's going down. And he doesn't want his daughter to be a part of it, for good reason. David Cronenberg's delightfully disgusting The Brood spotlights a father who hacks through some particularly unsettling mutant children to get Candice away from her mother and the “psychoplasmically” birthed abominations that resulted from her own mental hangups. Through it all Frank's focus is on protecting his real offspring. Admirable.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Gomez Addams, “The Addams Family”
Actor: John Astin

Mr. Addams is the father of two very “special” children and the head of quite the unique household. Even still, he's an enthusiastic and exemplary father, taking a keen interest in all of his children's activities and interests – when he's not too busy cavorting with Morticia. Like Pugsley and Wednesday, he's got a soft spot for toys and other eccentricities himself, and he's always happy to make sure all of their needs are met, as long as they're not too bizarre, like wanting to intermingle with the rest of those “normal” people in the neighborhood.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

And now, here are the decidedly not-so-thoughtful fathers who could stand to learn a thing or two from their kinder brethren. Seriously, guys. What's wrong with you all?

Chris Cleek, The Woman
Actor: Sean Bridgers

Lucky McKee's adaptation of Jack Ketchum's disturbing novel The Woman (his follow-up to Offspring) follows Chris Cleek, the morally bankrupt patriarch of the Cleeks, a family comprised of meek wife Belle, detached daughter Peggy; deviant son Brian, and innocent Darlin'. After happening upon the titular Woman, a feral human female, on a hunting trip in the woods, Chris takes it upon himself to capture and “civilize” her, by any means necessary. His word is law as he forces every member of the family to pitch in while performing acts on the Woman that range from perverse to inhumane. But that's not among his worst offenses, which
include cultivating his only son to follow in his sexist footsteps and apparently having impregnated his own daughter, all the while verbally and physically abusing his wife. He gets what's coming to him in the end but only after agonizing years of inflicting suffering onto the Cleek children.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Nathan Grantham, Creepshow
Actor: Jon Lormer

Nathan, star of Stephen King's short story “Father's Day” as seen in Creepshow, is a real piece of work. His family's rich all right, off of the suffering of others. After emotionally abusing his daughter, Bedelia, for a number of years, treating her like dirt, and capitalizing on the pain he induced on others (not to mention those he murdered and extorted), Bedelia's finally had enough and offs him with a marble ashtray – on Father's Day, no less. What's he do? He has the nerve to come back to life after Bedelia mistakenly spills whiskey upon his grave, moaning and yowling for the Father's Day cake he was never able to eat – screaming at his daughter to bring it to him. He kills off every last one of his heirs and has the audacity to go after the daughter he abused all her life, all to get at that stupid Father's Day cake, which he hadn't earned by any means whatsoever.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Jack Torrance, The Shining
Actor: Jack Nicholson

Technically, Wendy Torrance's husband, Jack, isn't completely at fault when it comes to the events that unfold in The Shining, but he's still carrying them all out. From attacking his wife and son with a variety of weapons, verbal assaults, and other various acts to “correct” their behavior, he's probably not someone you'd want to leave your child with for an extended period of time. Poor little Danny. Poor Wendy. Shining or not, Jack's not exactly the most glamorous father you could hope to have.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Don, 28 Weeks Later
Actor: Robert Carlyle

From the very beginning of the movie, Don marks himself as a relatively useless father and husband when he leaves his wife alone with a ravenous group of savages in their now infected cottage. It's not too much of a stretch to understand how Don quickly turns into a useless, disgusting father once he's infected as well, pursuing his own children with the intent of killing and snacking on them...without the influence of those bath salts we've been hearing so much about lately.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Ed Wilson, Natural Born Killers
Actor:: Rodney Dangerfield

Mallory's father, Ed Wilson, portrayed by Rodney Dangerfield no less, is the epitome of the American scumbag husband – you know, the one who heckles his wife, expects that his word be law, and violates his daughter on a regular basis. He finally gets what's coming to him by the time Mickey hits the scene (like, Mickey and Mallory 4-Ever!), but his actions up to the point where Mallory runs away with Mickey are completely inexcusable. The licentious patriarch and his various sexist remarks are made even more creepworthy by the scenes being shot as a sitcom parody.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Gordon Fleming, Session 9
Actor: Peter Mullan

At first glance Session 9's Gordon doesn't seem like a bad guy. He's a new father and loving husband...until you see he likes to slap his wife when she accidentally spills boiling water on him. He's not so much of a fantastic man then and becomes even less of one at the climax of Session 9 when part of a dissociative personality disorder “tells” him to murder both his wife and small daughter – in fact, that's actually what had happened all along. A bit of an extreme reaction, wouldn't you say? Prime candidate for Father of the Year material right here.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

Gus Gilbert, Pet Sematary 2
Actor: Clancy Brown

It's not enough to be a horrible stepfather. Gus Gilbert had to shoot his stepson Drew's beloved dog Zowie as well. The overbearing, rude town sheriff receives his just desserts, but that doesn't excuse him from being an absolute nightmare of a stepfather to deal with, verbally abusing Drew and assaulting him with vicious comments over and over throughout his initially short life. He doesn't get away with being a truly pathetic excuse for a human being thankfully, but he's just another example of someone who should never be given the responsibility of raising children.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads

The Stepfather, The Stepfather
Actor: Terry O’Quinn

Terry O'Quinn in the titular role couldn't have been a better choice in the 1987 chiller The Stepfather. This man is all over the map when it comes to playing the role of doting father and convincing con man, going out of his way to show stepdaughter Stephanie he's the real deal and showering her with gifts like a brand new puppy. The facade fades when Stephanie is suspicious of him and begins to question what exactly is fishy about her mother's new beau. Things go horribly awry when the Stepfather decides Stephanie must be silenced as he sets about killing not only her but also the puppy he gave to her as a gift.

Celebrate Father's Day with Horror's Best and Worst Dads
