Narrow Caves, The (CD)

Starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Will Patton, Wyatt Russell, Lili Simmons

Written by S. Craig Zahler

Cinestate is a new production company located in Dallas, TX, and they mean business. They just finished principal photography on Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich and they’ve released The Narrow Caves, what they call the first “audiostate”.

An “audiostate” is somewhere between an audio book and a radio drama.  Shorter than an audio book, clocking in at around three hours, it features dramatic narration and a full cast in speaking roles.  Audio effects and foley work flesh out the production, effectively making this a movie you listen to.  The concept for the series is to produce scripts that weren’t greenlit for feature films, and that’s a smart move.  Even with very high production values, it’s cheaper to make a high-concept horror tale like this entirely in audio than it is to put actors in caves and do horrible unworldly things to them.

The Narrow Caves was written by S. Craig Zahler, best known for writing and directing Bone Tomahawk and writing the Puppet Master reboot.  With a cast including the incredible Vincent D’Onofrio and screen veteran Will Patton narrating, this is no small-time affair.

Class, style, and quality are the name of the game here.  Leads Wyatt Russell (yes, Kurt’s son) and Lili Simmons play Walter and Ruby, two college-age kids in 1983 who fall in love after a bumpy start caused, in part, by Ruby’s secretive nature.  We experience their romance blossoming, including some steamy love scenes.  Despite some nightmarish hints that something isn’t quite right, Walter accompanies Ruby on a visit to her childhood home.  There, they are hosted by Ruby’s odd and off-putting father (D’Onofrio) who does little to settle Walter’s nerves about Ruby’s reluctance to discuss her past.

Before long, everything goes straight off the rails before spiraling to a horrific Lovecraftian finish.

That back half of the story lifts heavily from Zahler’s most known work, Bone Tomahawk, in both theme and content.  Whether that will bother the listener is unknown.  I noted it, but it didn’t feel like a retread.  Suffice to say Zahler is in familiar territory with caves, captivity, and horrors perpetrated on prisoners by monsters from the past.

Caves takes a huge left turn from Tomahawk in the source and nature of the threat, however, and as I mentioned above, our good friend Howard Phillips will leap to the front of your mind while listening.

Production is grade-A work.  The foley work and special effects are fantastic, with a great mix for headphone wearers.  The performances are solid across the board, especially Russell and Simmons in the lead roles.  Even without having to perform the visuals of their ordeals, this is gutsy, difficult work, and the hit every mark perfectly.  D’Onofrio doesn’t play a huge role, but the man’s voice is a cultural treasure, and I’d listen to him read just about anything.

The writing is good.  Just…good.  Zahler struggles a bit with the format.  What seems like a series of errors at first is actually a motif: Walter is the “lanky man” and Ruby is the “pale woman.”  Every character has a pronoun-based nickname like that, used repeatedly.  In written fiction, that’s a massive no-no.  A sign of a very inexperienced writer.  Here, it’s clearly used as a kind of verbal shorthand, a style choice.  It’s an odd one, and I can’t say it works.  It’s a little irritating for someone used to audiobooks, as an author would never adopt such an odd and grammatically transgressive style.  I’m thinking it may be an artifact of his screenwriting, where you often reference a character using a similar motif before naming them properly.  Here, he continues long after we have their names, so it must be an intentional decision. It’s an odd one, and as a proofreader and editor, it grated me a bit.

The romance is believable, but the love scenes are, frankly, a little gratuitous.  In a film, they’d play out quickly and add a steamy component to the romance.  Narrated and voiced, they seem to take a very long time.  Kudos to narrator Patton for delivering them without any subtle discomfort.  For the listener, though, there’s not much refuge.  The sex is graphic, and only sometimes plays into the plot.

Both of these issues are symptoms of a screenwriter straddling the fence between written prose and a script intended to be performed.  Basically, they’re pitfalls of this format.  It’s impossible not to think of audiobooks when listening, but audiobooks are simply the written word spoken aloud.  This isn’t that.  At the same time, this goes beyond narration written for a play, audio or screen.  Since the narration provides a huge portion of the visual information, it naturally has to be more book-like.  While it’s not a format that’s brand new (similar productions have been created for decades, but not often due to the effort required) it’s new to the folks at Cinestate, and all of this can be blamed on that, I imagine.

Any negative effect these issues might have will depend heavily on the listener.  Personally, they were minor irritants, and finishing the tale was no chore at all.  Some might be driven away entirely, others might not even notice them.

Either way, it’s impossible not to recommend The Narrow Caves.  It’s a great horror tale told well with fantastic performances from world-class actors.  It’s a graphic, brutal runaway train once we hit those…infested halls.  There’s no reason to avoid investing three hours of an afternoon listening to Walter and Ruby’s plight.  As for Audiostates, I look forward to more work in the future.  Honing the form can only produce even more enjoyable forays into lost, unproduced screenplays.

First Sporror (Sports/Horror) Film Lucky Number Announced

We have a new sub-genre of horror heading our way – sporror – courtesy of Gunpowder & Sky and Mandalay Sports Media, and they’ve announced their first film: Lucky Number. We have the early details here so if sporror seems up your alley, read on!

From the Press Release:
Gunpowder & Sky, the global content studio, announced today that it has partnered with Mandalay Sports Media, a diversified sports content and media company, to create a new category of filmed entertainment: “sporror.” The companies also revealed the first film in the genre, Lucky Number.

“Digital audiences are devouring horror films and sports entertainment so it only seemed natural to create content that caters to both passions at the same time,” said Van Toffler, CEO and co-founder of Gunpowder & Sky. “Mike Tollin and I go back to 1999 when we made Varsity Blues together so I’m happy to be working with him again – not to mention Dick Glover, maestro of all great things at Funny or Die – this is going to be both fun and dangerous, and perhaps we’ll even bring back the whipped cream bikini!”

Lucky Number, to be written by Aaron Cooley (Shaken Not Stirred, The Campaigners), is the first in a new series of horror films set in and starring celebrities from the world of sports. The story centers around a pro basketball superstar who must pay up on a deal he made with the devil, transforming into the most athletic — and frightening — killer in cinematic history. Tollin and Jon Weinbach, Mandalay Sports Media’s executive vice-president, are executive producers on the project, with Toffler serving as EP for Gunpowder & Sky. Pro athletes, many of whom are horror fans, will appear in Lucky Number and ensuing sporror films. The companies are currently meeting with potential directors.

“There are few places more frightening than a dark, empty arena, and the sports landscape is full of strange and authentically frightening characters,” said Weinbach, whose producing credits include the ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries Sole Man and Straight Outta LA. “We’ve never seen a mash-up between horror and sports, where everything from a hockey skate to a nacho cheese vat can be dangerous – or even deadly.”

Writer’s Note: Given the recent news about people dying from eating nacho cheese sauce, no doubt this press release was written a few days ago, and we’re sure no disrespect was intended.

Horror Author/Actor Joe Knetter Update; Campaign Continues

A few weeks ago we told you about a Go Fund Me campaign for horror author/actor/personality Joe Knetter. He needed 3K to help him through the months he’d be out due to the need for spinal surgery. You guys came together and raised it in a matter of a few days.

With that help, Joe was able to take care of his children and get a walker for himself. The good news is that he will be able to walk again unassisted once he has the surgery. The bad news is he’s gonna be laid up for quite a while.

He just posted the following update to his dilemma.

I want to start by thanking all those involved with the last campaign. No matter how many times I say it, I can never thank you enough. It means so much to me that you helped my family when we needed it the most. Thank you. I now have a better understanding of the next steps.

“I met with the neurosurgeon. The good news is that he thinks he can really help me. The prior three spinal surgeries I’ve had over the years, while providing relief, eventually required more surgery and the pain never fully left. I have no delusions, I have extensive nerve damage, I will still have pain, and always will, but the thought of being able to walk and live without major pain is something I never thought was possible. I’ve always hid the pain the best I could in order to not worry and become a burden to people. The pain I’m in now is the worst it’s ever been. I rarely leave the house. Being on my feet quickly causes the pain to become debilitating. Sitting for too long will also have the same effect. My legs are weak due to the nerve issues, so I fall often. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But it will be difficult.”

I’m going to have a three level disc removal and fusion. Screws and rods will go in to stabalize my spine. I should be in the hospital for two to three days before finishing the recovery at home. It’ll be three to six months before I can resume my normal day to day activities. With physical therapy and my current life changes, due to Diabetes, I think the prognosis is very positive that I can look and feel the best I have since I was in my early twenties.”

With all this comes the realization that I still need more help. So I’m asking you, again, and I feel even worse than last time. Any share, kind words, or donation helps keep me afloat while I complete this process. I was truly blown away by your kindness before. The words you wrote helped as much as the money. I read those messages and comments so many times.

I want to get as healthy as possible for my family, my friends and my fans. I want to be here a long, long time. I want to entertain you and create stories, movies and shows that help you escape reality when you need it.

So we ask again… with all the humility imaginable… if you can spare… anything at all… every dime helps… please CLICK HERE and do so.

Thank you for reading this, and thank you for helping even if it’s just by sharing the above link on your social media accounts.

Milla Jovovich Comments on the Resident Evil Franchise Getting a Reboot

It was recently announced that German production company Constantin Films would be rebooting the Resident Evil film franchise with a new six-film series. This comes on the heels of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which ends the story of Alice, who was played by Milla Jovovich.

Related Story: Exclusive: Paul W.S. Anderson’s 5 Rules on Surviving Resident Evil’s Post-Apocalyptic World

In a recent chat with CB, Jovovich laid out her thoughts on the news, starting off by saying, “Okay, well good luck with that.

She continued, expanding her thoughts on how she feels this new set of films needs to be approached, stating, “I think a lot of people with these franchises kind of put the cart before the horse. There’s a danger to that. They’ve been wanting to reboot Resident Evil for a long time, and listen: I love the Resident Evil world. I think it’s a great property, I would do it if I was a producer.

Milla continues by explaining that she feels like the team she worked with on the films were incredibly devoted and passionate. “I think what made Resident Evil so special is that the people involved really loved what they’re doing and really were fans of the game. I would suggest that you find people that have that same passion for the property before you talk about reboots. I think if you get into this kind of genre, people are very sensitive to fakes. There’s some real fans in the sci-fi/action/horror world, and they’re not idiots. They can smell when something is done because people love it and when something is done just to monetize an opportunity,” she explains.

While I cannot and will not deny that a lot of work went into creating the six Resident Evil films we currently have, there’s no denying that they deviated very heavily from the game series. For many, the stories told in the games were perfect for film adaptations, so not using them felt like a crime. On the other hand, just retelling the stories we’ve played seems like a lazy copout, which is why I’ll always respect Anderson’s vision for trying something new.

Personally, I just want my Resident Evil films to feel dangerous, scary, and like the survivors are always teetering on the edge of failing entirely. Make me worry about the protagonists and I’m all for it!

Things never fail to become ultra-spooky when natural disasters leave behind ruins and humans are forced to return to their most primal of instincts as a means to survive. This is no more apparent than in the first trailer for What the Waters Left Behind, which just debuted at Cannes.

From the Press Release:
Luciano and Nicolás Onetti’s (Sonno Profondo, 2013; Francesca, 2015) new film, What the Waters Left Behind (Los Olvidados), landed in the Marché du Film (Cannes Film Festival) with the fourth edition of Blood Window Galas. The showcase presented recent films from Ibero-America with the support of directors and programmers from Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival from Catalonia, Mexico’s Morbido Fest, and Bifan in South Korea.

The trailer of the film had its world premiere on May 20th together with a 10-minute early-cut screening. What the Waters Left Behind was the winner of the First Fantasy Film Competition organized by INCAA in Argentina. It was shot in Epecuén in November 2016 and is currently in the post-production stage.

Epecuén was one of the most important touristic villages of Argentina. Thousands of people concurred, attracted by the healing properties of its thermal waters. On November 10, 1985, a huge volume of water broke the protecting embankment and the village was submerged under ten meters of salt water. Epecuén disappeared. Thirty years later the waters receded, and the ruins of Epecuén emerged, exposing a bleak and deserted landscape. The residents never returned.

The plot revolves around a group of young people that take a trip to the ruins in order to film a documentary about Epecuén. Ignoring the warnings, and after a brief tour, they get stranded in the abandoned village. Contrary to what they thought, they begin to realize that they are really not alone…

On this occasion the Onetti brothers leave their Seventies Italian giallo influences aside and dive deep into a classic slasher roadie along the same lines as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes.
