My Thoughts on Showtime’s Twin Peaks Episode 6

0
0

And so another Sunday is upon us, which means Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” is back with a brand new episode. Continuing the trend of bringing forth one mystery after another while seemingly not answering any previously brought up, the show still managed to charm and delight with its characters and their odd yet endearing quirks. Well, except for Richard Horne and Chad. But that’ll be discussed down below, lest I give anything away.

With this episode, we’re 1/3rd of the way through the “Twin Peaks” revival on Showtime. How does it feel to be this far along? Find out in my review below!

We open with Cooper still standing outside Dougie’s work next to the cowboy statue where we last left him. Subtle yet beautiful new music from Angelo Badalamenti plays while the security guard who told Dougie to stop loitering helps him get home to Jane, who has been waiting for him. After eating a sandwich, he goes upstairs at her behest to say goodnight to Sonny Jim, who wants Dougie to stay with him until he falls asleep. There is a wonderfully innocent and delightful moment between father and son as they play with a clap-activated light switch, one that fills Cooper with delight.

Meanwhile downstairs, Jane opens an envelope that was on their doorstep and, furious, immediately calls Dougie down. In the envelope is a picture of Dougie and Jade, who Cooper admits to knowing in his own broken way. Jane is understandably shaken and demands answers from Dougie but is interrupted by a phone call from the person owed money by Dougie. She sets up a meeting to pay back the amount and, even through her anger, gives Dougie a kiss on the top of his head, something that obviously means a great deal to Cooper judging by his reaction.

As Jane walks away and Cooper is left at the dinner table, he vaguely sees the one-armed man again in the Black Lodge. He is told that he must wake up with “her” while also being told over and over, “Don’t die“. Cooper then looks over the case files he was assigned and sees little balls of light in certain places on the pages, some moving, some stationary. He makes annotations based on these lights and their movements in the form of shapes, shadings, and more.

When Cooper goes to Dougie’s work the next day, his boss calls him to his office right away, where the case files are immediately investigated. The boss is at first exasperated, unable to make sense of Cooper’s “childish scribbles”. Suddenly, the boss finds a trend and is shocked by what Cooper has found out, even if we do not get the information. Something is obviously wrong and the boss holds Dougie to secrecy, pleased by the work that was done.

During this, Jane waits at the park to meet with the guys who are owed money by Dougie. She is explained why Dougie owes nearly $52,000, which boils down to bad sports bets. After an impassioned speech, she tells them that she’s only paying $25,000 and hands a wad of cash over. The men are shocked yet somewhat delighted by her attitude, calling her a “tough dame“. Watts’ performance here is one that mixes fear of reprisal and frustration at how life’s cards have been dealt. Their respect for her is fully earned and I don’t think we’ll be seeing them again, although you never know in the world of Twin Peaks.

There’s a short scene with Albert, who is driving in the rain while he talking to Gordon over the phone. He goes to a bar whose neon sign slightly resembles the Bang Bang Bar’s sign. Albert spots a blonde and we’re introduced to Diane Evans, played by Laura Dern. After two years of seeing Diane as a cassette recorder, it’s shocking to see her in the flesh. Although she barely speaks, only to say “Hello Albert“, seeing her is enough to feel like the wait was worth it.

There’s a very important side story that begins when Richard Horne is in the midst of a drug buy. The drug dealer, who looks and acts like a modern day greaser, is completely full of himself. The relationship between Richard and the drug dealer is obviously very tense and new while the drug dealer’s guard, who is armed with a very large gun, is obviously tickled pink by the exchange happening in front of him.

At one point, the drug dealer flips a coin and it seems to hang in the air for far too long, defying gravity, before suddenly falls in Richard’s mouth, who takes it out and holds it with his fingers. Strangely, the dime then falls out of the air and into the dealer’s hand, mysteriously vanishing from between Richard’s fingertips. The dealer claims to have won the coin flip, although what he won we don’t know. What we do see is that Richard is scared and furious as he drives away in a rage.

Back in Twin Peaks, we meet Carl, played by Harry Dean Stanton. He gets in a shuttle service and offers a seat to a neighbor who has to pick up the mail for Linda. The two engage in small talk about smoking, their relationships, what they do in Twin Peaks… It’s a harmless and casual encounter, one that gives the town a sense of life.

At the Double R Diner, a woman can’t stop gushing over the pie and coffee, so Shelly and Heidi (played again by Andrea Hays) decide to treat her the next time she comes in.

Back to Carl, he watches a mother and her son play in the park. There’s a sense of innocence in these moments, a feeling that the world isn’t full of mystery and terror. However, the boy then runs away and the mother chases after him only to see Richard Horne run him over without stopping in a horrific hit-and-run. The boy is obviously dead and Badalamenti’s music is a callback to his compositions for The City of Lost Children. Carl watches a yellow mist emerge from the boy and head into the blue sky. He then sits next to the grieving mother, who holds her bloody child.

Richard Horne stops his vehicle on the side of the road to inspect the damage caused by hitting the young boy. There is blood on the front of the truck, which he cleans off callously. There is no sense of remorse in what he’s done.

After this tragedy, we go back to the surreal aspects of the show, where we return to the office of the mysterious businessman played by Patrick Fischler from the first episode, who sees a red box on his laptop. Shocked, he immediately opens a small safe, takes out an envelope, and begins typing. All we see of the envelope is a simple black dot, about a centimeter in diameter, on the front.

Moving to a motel, a short man rolls dice over and over and writes down the results. Then, the envelope with the black dot on it is slipped under his door. He opens it to reveal a picture of an unknown woman and Dougie. Picking up an ice pick, he outlines the woman’s face before stabbing her picture followed by stabbing Dougie’s, leaving the icepick in the middle of his face.

We go to an office where we see the woman from the envelope photo. The short man rushes into her office and stabs her mercilessly with his icepick. It’s a vicious moment, one that rivals the intensity of the strange glass box creature from the second episode. A woman who witnesses the murder is chased down and also slain, although offscreen. As the short man walks away, he mourns his icepick, which bent during his rampage.

In the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s station, Hawk is in the police bathroom washing his hands when some change drops from his pocket, one coin rolling into a stall. It’s a buffalo nickel, the Native American chief head faded over time. Looking around, he sees that the manufacturer of the stall door is Nez Perce, which has a Native American chief for a logo. Upon further inspection, Hawk sees that the stall has a few missing rivets, which leads him to pry it open. While doing so, Chad, another officer, tries to ask him what he’s doing, only for Hawk to pay him no mind. Inside the door, Hawk finds pieces of paper that have a lot of writing on them. The first thought is that they are pages from Laura Palmer’s diary, although there is nothing to confirm it.

Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s wife is yelling at him again about her father’s car and the shoddy work done on it. Chad tries to say that he wouldn’t take that kind of behavior but the dispatcher tries to put him in his place. However, Chad is taking none of it, going so far as to mock the sheriff’s son, who committed suicide.

As with every episode so far, we end with a performance at the Bang Bang Bar, this time of Sharon Van Etten performing her track “Tarifa”.

This is the first episode where I feel that not too much was offered in the way of progressing the story. Incidentals were taken care of, such as Dougie’s gambling issue, but the greater story doesn’t feel like it made much forward momentum. Rather, this episode felt more like a chance to slow things down, to ease back on the vast amount of information we’ve been given. With so much in front of us, this episode elected to focus almost primarily on characters we’ve already seen and/or know about rather than introducing new ones.

While this may feel like a slight to those who have been waiting so long, I see it in a completely different way. Part of the charm of “Twin Peaks” was that it never forced itself to push a story along for the sake of pushing a story. It let things happen naturally and we got to experience the town just as much as the mystery.

A third of the way through this revival, there are so many storylines on our plate that nothing else could be introduced and we could simply try to unravel these for the next 12 episodes. But of course that’s not how Lynch and Frost work. As always, next week can’t come soon enough.

E3 2017: Code Vein’s Combat Gets Bloody

0

Knowing how long it normally takes to reach the end credits in a Japanese RPG, you’d better start clearing up your schedule if you want to have any chance of completing Bandai Namco’s Code Vein. Especially if it ends up being anywhere near as difficult as the Dark Souls franchise, with which it shares the same publisher.

The new trailer for Code Vein shown at E3 doesn’t really show us much aside from some very bloody gameplay footage of the combat mechanics. In terms of plot, we already know that you play as a vampire warrior in a world overrun with nightmarish beasts. If you give in to your bloodlust, you’ll become one of the Lost, which is what the game calls the vampires without a shred of humanity.

Code Vein is still pretty early in development, but we’ll see more when it’s ready to be shown. Either way, you gotta love that gorgeous anime art-style. Slated for a 2018 release, expect it on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Code Vein PS4/XB1/PC – Thorns of Judgement (E3 2017 Trailer)
Code Vein is coming to PS4, XB1 and PC in 2018! In the not too distant future, a mysterious disaster has brought collapse to the world as we know it. Towering skyscrapers, once symbols of prosperity, are now lifeless graves of humanity’s past pierced by the Thorns of Judgment. At the center of the destruction lies a hidden society of Revenants called Vein. This final stronghold is where the remaining few fight to survive, blessed with Gifts of power in exchange for their memories and a thirst for blood. Give into the bloodlust fully and risk becoming one of the Lost, fiendish ghouls devoid of any remaining humanity.

E3 2017: The Xbox E3 Briefing Takeaway, and 5 Games you Shouldn’t Overlook

0
0

I’ve said this in previous articles, but I’ve never been a fan of the Microsoft E3 showings. This will be my fourth year attending the event, and each year I am left wondering why the Xbox team doesn’t think that gamers want new games. Last year seemed to be a joke, with an announcement of a new gen “8.5” console and backwards compatibility. I’m sorry Xbox, but telling me I can play the games I’ve already owned for five years and that they might look extra pretty when your new console releases next year doesn’t do it for me.

Now before you start calling me a Sony fanboy and fill my inbox with hatemail, let me tell you that I for a long time was a big Xbox fanboy. The original console came out on my birthday, and I still have a copy of Voodoo Vince sitting on my shelf. For the past few years, I’ve just genuinely felt that Sony outclassed them. Just show me more new games, Microsoft! Your Hololens might as well be wizard magic to me if it doesn’t play Halo 6!

Well Xbox fans, the seals have broken and the frost giants have come, because Microsoft has finally done what fans are begging for and devoted an entire press conference to the games. And by god, was it glorious. I’m going to do them a kindness and pretend that whole Forza Motorsports 7 Porsche thing didn’t happen, as I don’t know a single gamer that can both afford a Porsche and be super excited about the new Forza. I’ll also admit that it started a bit rocky, with the unveiling of the new Xbox One X specs. I’m sure that some people out there nerd out over processing power and whatnot, and good for you. For me, it all just sounds like a dick measuring contest. Plus, my friend Joseph mentioned that the Xbox One X sounds like a teenager’s super edgy gamertag, and I just cannot for the life of me get that out of my head.

My despair was short lived however, as soon Phil Spencer strolled back out, laden with the swagger of man that knows he’s about to drop some serious bombs, and said (keep in mind I’m paraphrasing here), “right, it’s game time. We have 42 new games to show you, 22 of which are exclusive.” From there, it was a cavalcade of awesome for the hour and fifteen minutes until the credits rolled. Just watch it if you haven’t seen it:

Now I didn’t really buy into this whole mid-generation HD console hype, but I’ll be damned if the games didn’t look phenomenal on the Xbox One X. It isn’t the kind of insane jump like we got from the PS2 to PS3, but I’d be lying if I said that Assassin’s Creed Origins didn’t drop my jaw. So for fans with 4k TVs looking to upgrade, it won’t be a waste. Releasing November 7th at a $500 price point, it’s too much for me to buy into. They promise that the Xbox One X will make every game look better and run faster, which is even more important when you consider that it comes fully backwards compatible not only with the Xbox 360, but an extensive original Xbox library. Like I said before, still not personally worth the asking price, but a treat for hardcore fans.

Alright, now that I’ve got all the technical recap out of the way, I can get into the games! So far, my buddy David Gelmini and I have done our best to bring you the biggest news from E3, including the big announcements from the Xbox E3 Briefing. After we were done and ready to close up shop, there were still some titles I wanted to make sure that you guys took the time to check out. Each of these games were given the spotlight for a moment, but easily could have slipped your gaze if you had to go make sure your dinner wasn’t burning or something. Keep in mind that these are all titles that got new footage in the conference, so don’t get mad at me that I’m not including the brief snippets for games like Hello Neighbor.

5) Black Desert:

Available for some time on the PC, Black Desert is famous for having one of the most robust character creation tools in any MMO (or even regular RPG for that matter). Graphically, the game is a marvel to behold. It caught a lot of flack on release for some poor mechanics and cash grab micro-transactions, but I have plenty of friends that swear by its genuine hardcore MMO quality. Console MMOs are especially rare, so take a moment to check out the trailer and see if it’s your thing. I’m all for bringing new genre’s to new platforms, and maybe Black Desert can finally bridge that gap.

4) Ori and the Will of the Whisps:

Must… not… cry! If you played Ori and the Blind Forest back when it released in 2015, then you are over the moon right now that the sequel is really coming. Easily one of the most poignant and touching platformers ever made, the original game made you feel some real feels. It was dark, deeply wonderful, and had a way of filling you with whimsy and dread in the same breath. With the sequel looking to paint an even darker picture, I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

3) The Last Night:

So we don’t actually see a lot of concrete details in this trailer, other than that it looks like <i>Blade Runner</i> done in 2D pixel-punk. So instead of trying to break it all down, I’m just going to link the official description:

“Xbox One console launch exclusive. The Last Night lets you explore a two-dimensional cyberpunk open world, built with four unique districts each with distinct architecture, cultures and industries.  Experience action and infiltration gameplay in the great tradition of cinematic platformers and travel between districts using taxis, ferries, or monorail while trying to keep a low profile and remain undetected.  Meet a diverse, inclusive cast of complex characters to interact with through meaningful, branching dialogue and enjoy varied gameplay such as driving down epic highways, flying drones, and hacking droids to do your dirty work.”

Sold.

2) Deep Rock Galactic:

I’m just going to go ahead and name off some things I love. Cooperative monster shooters. Mining for loot. Space dwarves. Starship Troopers. Melting bugs with flamethrowers. Awesome retro graphics. Blowing bugs apart with shotguns. Tense combat against overwhelming hordes. Snarky space dwarves. Big machine guns, which I can use to chomp through bugs. I want Deep Rock Galactic.

1) Tacoma:

If I wasn’t familiar with Fullbright’s previous game, Gone Home, I wouldn’t have even thought to include Tacoma. The trailer certainly doesn’t give us a lot to go off of. But if I know anything about this design team, it’s to expect a hell of a lot more than what meets the eye. Gone Home is one of my favorite narrative adventures of all time, bucking the normally contrived and boring trend and telling a genuinely moving human story while still being creepy as hell. With an expanded budget and more experience, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Tacoma.

Well, that’s all I have for you now gaming fans! Check in soon for my Bethesda recap, and see what Sony has in store for us tomorrow. Let me know below what you thought of my list, and if you’re excited for the Xbox One X!

E3 2017: The Evil Within 2 Coming in October, Looks Anything but Ordinary

0
0

For the past few years, Bethesda has kicked some serious ass with their E3 showings. First we had Doom and Fallout 4 in 2015, then Prey and Dishonored 2 in 2016. Now, in an event I can only describe as a mad display of decadence, they announce two titles that I have been looking forward to more than finding cocktail made out of genuine unicorn tears. I’ll talk about the new Wolfenstein in a bit, but clearly the showstopper for me was the reveal of The Evil Within 2.

I genuinely did not think that this game would ever see the light of day. Despite absolutely adoring the original and giving the DLC a similar score, I’ve met far more people that haven’t beaten this game than those who have. If I were the speculating type (which I am), I’d say it had something to do with how abstract the game was. It’s also not a very friendly game, with a scant few weapons and little ammo to go between them, meaning that if you’re not a horror veteran you might very well find yourself stranded in a difficult pinch.

Luckily, horror fandom has prevailed once again. We will not only see a <i>The Evil Within 2</i>, but we will see it as soon as October 13th! Now as there are currently no totally clean copies of just <i>The Evil Within 2</i>’s Bethesda segment, I’m linking two videos here: the official trailer, and the footage we saw at the Bethesda press conference. Enjoy.

The Evil Within 2 – Official E3 Announce Trailer:
You are Detective Sebastian Castellanos and at your lowest point. But when given a chance to save your daughter, you must enter a world filled with nightmares and discover the dark origins of a once-idyllic town to bring her back. Horrifying threats emerge from every corner as the world twists and warps around you. Will you face adversity head on with weapons and traps, or sneak through the shadows to survive? This is your one chance at redemption, and the only way out is in.

The Evil Within 2 releases worldwide Friday the 13th, October 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Revised and Expanded Edition of Beyond Terror: The Films of Lucio Fulci Announced

I have to sing the praises for Lucio Fulci, because he helped me discover the wonders of horror early in my life. That’s because I watched his films Zombi 2 (or Zombie Flesh Eaters, as it’s known in the UK) and The House by the Cemetery when I was a kid, which guaranteed that I was hooked on violence and gore from a young age.

If, like me, you want to celebrate the life of the great Italian horror pioneer, I suggest you head over to Indiegogo to help finance an expanded re-issue of Stephen Thrower’s acclaimed book Beyond Terror: The Films of Lucio Fulci. This new version will feature an incredible 128 brand new pages, 40 of which will be in full color. Backers will also receive a DVD called The Lucio Fulci Trailer Show, which showcases the classic trailers for his films. Best of all, you can also have your name printed in the book, which is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

From the Press Release:
Our goal is to re-issue Stephen Thrower’s acclaimed Lucio Fulci book Beyond Terror in a massively revised and expanded edition along with an exclusive DVD of all known Lucio Fulci trailers, gathered together for the first time ever, all presented in a heavy duty case modelled on the Book of Eibon. We can only make this dream project become a reality with YOUR help!

A Radical New Edition
This is more than just a re-issue however; we have spent the past three years working with author Stephen Thrower to fully revise, update and expand Beyond Terror to take account of the intervening twenty years of research and every new discovery about Lucio Fulci and his work. In fact so much has changed compared to the first edition that we can confidently claim this is effectively a NEW BOOK that will be of great value even to those of you who already have a treasured copy of Beyond Terror in your library.

SO MUCH MORE NEW MATERIAL:

80,000 more words

128 more pages, including an extra 40 pages in full colour

350 more images

Last week we brought you the first 3 posters for Seven Sisters (formerly What Happened to Monday?), 2 of which were numbered. Today we finish the countdown by showing off the many faces of Noomi Rapace in her new film!

Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow), Seven Sisters stars Noomi Rapace, Glenn Close, and Willem Dafoe. Check out the newly released international posters below.

Synopsis:
In a not so distant future, where overpopulation and famine have forced governments to undertake a drastic One-Child Policy, seven identical sisters (all of them portrayed by Noomi Rapace) live a hide-and-seek existence pursued by the Child Allocation Bureau. The Bureau, directed by the fierce Nicolette Cayman (Glenn Close), enforces a strict family-planning agenda that the sisters outwit by taking turns assuming the identity of one person: Karen Settman. Taught by their grandfather (Willem Dafoe) who raised and named them – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday – each can go outside once a week as their common identity, but are only free to be themselves in the prison of their own apartment. That is until, one day, Monday does not come home.

Prepare to Get Stung by Tsunambee!

Okay, I can’t believe this is a movie; but somehow, someone convinced the powers-that-be that it was appropriate to make a movie about giant killer bees (they kinda look like wasps) that turn people into zombies. Or zombies just appear in the midst of this chaos. Who even knows?

Presenting Tsunambee, the new film from Wild Eye Releasing. Directed by Milko Davis, the film stars Stacy Pederson and Ruselis Perry. When can you see this film? How does tomorrow sound to you?

That’s right… it hits VOD platforms tomorrow, June 13th, so you can gather all your friends, a few six-packs, and a couple of pizzas to relish what looks to be one of the most absurd films I’ve seen in a while.

Check out the trailer below to see what I’m talking about.

Synopsis:
After a catastrophe strikes Los Angeles, survivors face an even greater threat: thousands of giant killer bees, ushering in the end of the world!

Apparently the new Blumhouse project that was previously called Half to Death is now titled Happy Death Day, and we have the first teaser to share in advance of the full trailer dropping on Wednesday.

Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, Whiplash) produces an original and inventive rewinding thriller in Happy Death Day, in which a college student (Jessica Rothe, La La Land) relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity.

Happy Death Day is directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and written by Scott Lobdell and Landon. Ruby Modine, Rachel Matthews, Charles Aitken, and Israel Broussard co-star with Rothe.

Look for the film on October 13th. You can learn more at happydeathday.com.

Devolver’s E3 Press Conference Is the Most Surreal Short Movie You’ll See This Year

0
0

This year’s E3 was infiltrated by what might be one of the most satirical and scathing presentations I’ve ever seen. The 15-minute press conference from publisher Devolver Digital, of Hotline Miami and Broforce fame, was a direct attack against early access and DLC practices, all couched in a hilarious and wildly surreal performance that featured blood, dismemberment, insults, and even a Scanners-esque head explosion.

Oh, and there was some game footage snuck in there as well.

Starting off rather innocuously, the press conference quickly devolves (no pun intended) into something straight out of the mind of David Lynch and David Cronenberg, the influences worn proudly upon the sleeves of whoever came up with this nightmare.

If you’ve got the time, I cannot recommend watching this enough. It’s wickedly enjoyable while also being something that any horror fan will get a kick out of.

Plus, hearing the line “Shut your gob, you fucking moron” was nothing short of a delight.

John Landis Discusses What He Feels is Wrong With the Dark Universe

0
0

This past weekend, Universal kicked off their Dark Universe by releasing The Mummy, the first in a planned shared universe. The film didn’t do to well, especially considering the marketing push it received and that it was led by Tom Cruise, who is usually a box office guarantee. Generating only $32 million domestically (although it earned a fantastic $141 million overseas), the film has received mostly negative reviews and has already generated one think piece after another about how the Dark Universe may already be dead (hint: it’s not).

Related Story: The Mummy – Exclusive Interview With Director Alex Kurtzman

One voice that chimed in to discuss the film was An American Werewolf in London director John Landis, who shot down the concept of shared universes being a new thing while also stating that such endeavors can work, they just need to be approached in the right way.

Talking with Ireland’s Entertainment, Landis explained, “First of all, it’s not a new idea. If you remember with Universal back in the ’40s, once they made all their classics, they started cross-pollinating. House of Dracula, House of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets The Wolf-Man – you know what they used to call those? Monster rallies! (laugh) And then of course, one of the great ironies is what was considered… OK – it’s over now!… was Abbot & Costello Meets Frankenstein, which is actually a very funny movie and very respectful of the monsters. I think, y’know, maybe that’s one of the problems with Universal’s Dark Universe is that it isn’t respectful of the monsters.

He continued by explaining that there are ways to do it well by saying, “Y’know, when they want to reinvent and sometimes it works great – look at David Cronenberg’s The Fly or John Carpenter’s The Thing. It can be done.

What’s important that Landis is stating here is that Hollywood isn’t necessarily attempting something new but they may not be approaching it with the right intentions. For many of us horror fans, something authentic will be far more exciting than something bombastic. When a studio or filmmaker is able to combine those two traits effectively, it’s a surefire recipe for love and adoration. However, Nightbreed and The Thing were flops upon release, so what do I know?

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy. The cast also includes Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Russell Crowe, and Sofia Boutella as the titular character.

If you’ve got coulrophobia, this most certainly isn’t the kind of film you need in your life!

This is a very newsworthy subject, especially with all the continuous clown sightings.

Ron Fortier’s Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger Aiming to Become a Live-Action Film

Comic author Ron Fortier may be best known for his work on titles such as “Green Hornet” or “The Terminator”. However, he also wrote a series of novels by the name of Brother Bones, which were pulp supernatural horror/adventure stories that followed an undead avenger.

Talking about the creation of the character, Fortier explains, “Brother Bones the Undead Avenger is a character I created over ten years ago. I just wanted to do my own homage to such great gun-totting vigilantes like the Shadow and the Spider. Little did I realize he would become so popular with our readers. They are forever clamoring for more of his macabre adventures.

Daniel Husser, co-founder of Franklin-Husser Entertainment LLC, comments, “When Erik first showed me the book I immediately thought that Brother Bones would make a great movie. The story is dark and full of action, so it’s perfect for us. Since we are working with Ron Fortier’s creation, it is absolutely important to us that we stay faithful to the text. Many adaptations tend to change too much, damaging the original concept and we don’t want that to happen.

Co-founder Erik Franklin adds, “New Pulp has such untapped potential. There are so many vibrant, original characters that would be perfect for a cinematic adaption. Brother Bones has all that you could want in a story: exciting visuals, well-drawn characters, and each page is a cliff-hanger.

After watching a two-minute test video, Fortier knew that an adaptation was something that needed to happen. “It virtually blew me away,” Fortier says. “Erik and Daniel had condensed in just two minutes what it had taken me almost four chapters to establish. They immediately captured the essence of the character and watching him come to life in that clip convinced me these two guys are going to make a fantastic Brother Bones feature. I couldn’t be more excited,
” he gushes.

Franklin and Husser are aiming to make a movie that is hard-R, one that will feature a lot of violent content. They will also be taking inspiration from films such as The Godfather, The Shadow, The Roaring Twenties, and The Crow. However, in order to make this film, the group needs to raise $100k on Kickstarter.

So, if you want to see this project become a reality, head on over to Kickstarter to lend your support.

Synopsis:
Tommy Bonello is a hitman for crime boss Topper Wyld. When Wyld orders an attack on his own bordello in order to start a mob war, Tommy and his twin brother Jack jump at the chance. However, when an innocent girl is killed in the crossfire, Tommy is tormented with supernatural visions and nightmares. Fearing for his sanity, Tommy renounces his violent ways and becomes a monk. However, Jack and Topper have other plans…

Hulu’s Castle Rock Locks Down Filming Location

It looks like Stephen King’s world of “Castle Rock” will be invading Devens, Massachusetts, as well as the surrounding areas, to film its 10-episode run! A story from Lowell Sun states that production crews have already begun building sets and that the show will shoot from August through January of 2018.

David Hartman, director of the Massachusetts Production Coalition, explains, “It’s a really exciting and prestigious project. Landing a TV series for the state is a major win, and an indication of how far the industry has come here. …we have the right infrastructure, crew and talent base, and a stable incentive program to land this big one.

Recent news from Deadline confirms that André Holland (Moonlight, “The Knick,” “American Horror Story: Roanoke”) has been cast as the lead in Hulu’s upcoming psychological horror series. Holland will play Henry, a Death Row attorney with a unique and complicated history in Castle Rock, Maine.

The series, which hails from JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV, is based on the world created by Stephen King in his various works. It is named after Castle Rock, the fictional town in King’s native Maine that is featured prominently in a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories.

“Manhattan” creator Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason developed the project for television, based on characters and situations created by Stephen King, and serve as writers. They executive produce with Abrams, Ben Stephenson, and Liz Glotzer.

“Castle Rock” reunites Hulu, King, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros., which previously collaborated on event series “11.22.63” based on King’s same-named novel. The series will stream exclusively in the U.S. on Hulu, and Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution will distribute globally.

Synopsis:
A psychological horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, “Castle Rock” combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. “Castle Rock” is an original suspense/thriller — a reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.
