Dynamite Entertainment’s Vampirella Tarot Card Kickstarter Nears First Stretch Goal

A couple of weeks ago, we posted about Dynamite Entertainment’s Kickstarter that was raising funds for an officially licensed Vampirella Tarot Card set, which needed $5,000 to become a reality. Unsurprisingly, the campaign blew past its original goal and is now hovering at almost $10,000, which is where the first stretch goal lies. If the campaign can make it into the five-digit realm, the set will include a unique Expanded Arcana that adds three new Tarot Cards to the deck.

Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment, explains, “From the beginning, we wanted to do something special for our supporters and we think we’ve come up with something really unique. Working hand-in-hand with Vampirella comics scholars, we’ve designed an Expanded Arcana that provides three brand-new Tarot Cards that truly capture the vivacious history of our most iconic character. We’re thrilled to continue expanding Vampirella’s universe in such an aesthetically pleasing and exciting way!

You can see the expanded cards below.

Searching Dead, The (Book)

The Searching DeadWritten by Ramsey Campbell

271 Pages

Published by PS Publishing

The Searching Dead is the first part of a trilogy which will ultimately form The Three Births of Daoloth. Despite being a first-parter, it is actually a great read in its own right, and I felt the ending was suitably conclusive as a standalone, so I wouldn’t hold back on reading this now rather than waiting for the next book. Although it doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger, which personally I find annoying at times, the ending leaves unanswered questions that will doubtless be explored in future books in the series. Not least of these will involve Daoloth itself, the render of the veils, which is barely mentioned in the first book, although there are subtle hints peppered throughout the first part of this trilogy…

The format at times is reminiscent of previous generations of writers, referring as it does to a dark tome of arcane knowledge which is suitably extracted in the latter part of the story. And although this series builds on the Lovecraftian mythos from where Campbell’s roots firmly sprout, that is not to say it is Lovecraftian in tone, for the language is modern and far from baroque or florid. Nor is it overly-peppered with the trademark Campbell-isms which any of his regular readers will doubtless recognise, although there are enough to keep us grinning darkly as we race through the story.

Set in the early 1950s and written largely as the reminiscences of a schoolboy on the threshold of his own journey to maturity, The Searching Dead is far from a ‘coming of age’ story. Although not printed as such, the narrative hints at times that it may be transcribed from our protagonist’s (Dominic Sheldrake) diary in the manner of Adrian Mole, and at others it becomes more of a Biggles-style adventure that the Tremendous Three (Dominic, Jim and Roberta aka Bobby) find themselves entangled in. Among the main characters are an ominously stooping schoolteacher who talks to his young offspring as though she is an adult, and who responds likewise; a woman whose misguided spiritualist beliefs and faith have led her to regret something she’d only recently longed and wished for; assorted schoolteacher-priests of varying levels of devout beliefs, the protagonists’ families who are eager to keep the youngsters away from adventures, but who themselves become drawn into it, and the usual politics of a post-war British city that abounds with religious, political and family concerns.

To my mind, if Enid Blyton had worked alongside the likes of HP Lovecraft or Brian Lumley (especially his Necroscope series), then this is the resultant story, and it works extremely well, although what Sheldrake witnessed on a school trip to France is hardly something the Famous Five would have encountered.

The backdrop for the story, as with many of Campbell’s stories, is one which he is intimately familiar with. There is a street party for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation, trips to the cinema accompanied by an usherette wielding a flashlight (torch) and bus rides through Liverpool’s post-war, bombed-out landscape that has – for the most part – now perished to be replaced with a new growth of commerce and urban sprawl.

To summarize, the story demonstrates to me a new direction for Campbell in some ways as his various favorite topics, writing styles and techniques become blended to become a new and easily consumable format which newcomers to Campbell will doubtless enjoy. I eagerly await the second and third in the trilogy!

It’s time to experience some Lovecraftian chills, as the game Conarium from developer Zoetrope Interactive and publisher Iceberg Interactive is now available on Steam.

Synopsis:
Conarium is a chilling Lovecraftian game that follows the gripping story of four scientists and their endeavour to challenge what we normally consider to be the “absolute” limits of nature. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s novella At the Mountains of Madness, but largely set after the original story.

You, as Frank Gilman, open your eyes inside a room filled with strange, pulsating noises. Patterns of lights executing a Danse Macabre on the walls is presented by a queer device on the table. Having recalled nothing other than that you’re in Upuaut, an Antarctic base located near the South Pole, you find the place deserted and have a distinct feeling of something being terribly wrong. Somehow knowing that your memories cannot guide you enforces a strange feeling of vulnerability, a familiar yet alien sensation of being a part of a peculiar whole… Soon you will discover that having used the device during the expedition, you have died but then returned subtly changed, speaking of strange memories and of strange places. You have lost something important or gained something sinister…

Explore the Antarctic base, as well as dreams and visions. Study clues and unlock secrets, whilst avoiding macabre beings at all cost.

Key features:
A deep and suspense-filled Lovecraftian story with lots of secrets and Easter eggs.

Powered by Unreal Engine 4, Conarium aims to bring cutting-edge visuals for a more immersive storytelling and gaming experience.

Venture Into the Stories of Wolfenstein II and The Evil Within 2

Following their announcements at this year’s E3, Bethesda has released two new trailers for their upcoming games Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and The Evil Within 2. Both trailers venture into the stories of the games, focusing on what makes them so immediate and compelling.

For Wolfenstein II, they explain:
For BJ Blazkowicz, this time it’s personal. Or, make that more personal. Or… personaler.

Whatever the case, BJ is back to wage war against the evil Nazi regime – but in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, the front lines have moved from Europe to his homeland. Nazis have taken over America, and BJ wants his country back. His goal: to rally the resistance and restore peace and freedom to his beloved nation. And he’s not just fighting for himself; BJ’s partner Anya is pregnant with twins, so the future of his family is at stake as well.

For The Evil Within 2, we’re going to venture deeper into the rabbit hole of Sebastian’s nightmares:
The horrifying things Sebastian experienced in the first game left him scarred, but rather than run from the source of his nightmares, Sebastian chased after them. He spent three years seeking answers to the questions that plagued him and trying to find the organization who ruined his life. Who is Mobius? What do they want? What is the true purpose of STEM?

Check out the trailers below and let us know which game has you more excited!

Johannes Roberts Exclusive Interview on 47 Meters Down

0
0

While Steven Spielberg’s Jaws has certainly set the gold standard for shark attack movies, there have been a few good ones since. Deep Blue Sea is big, dumb fun. Open Water, an ultra low-budget yet realistic and well-made thriller, made a splash several years ago. And of course, there’s the cheesy TV-chum, Sharknado and its sequels. The Shallows, starring Blake Lively as a lone girl against a murderous Great White, came out last year to mixed reviews but big box office. Now we have 47 Meters Down, a sea-set thriller directed and cowritten by Johannes Roberts.

We caught up with Roberts while he was hard at work on his next feature – The Strangers 2 – and he gave us some insights behind the motivation and the making of 47 Meters Down.

Dread Central: Was it a fear of sharks that made you want to explore this concept?

Johannes Roberts: No, I wrote this because I’m a diver.

DC: Oh, were you there under the water with the actors while directing?

JR: I love going underwater, but most of the time I would be on top. The monitor stations would be above, and we’d have speakers underwater. I’d be communicating to the actors and to the crew through microphones.

DC: When you auditioned actresses for these leads – who are played by Mandy Moore and Claire Holt – how do you know they’re going to be able to act underwater?

JR: ‘You don’t’ is the answer. Neither of them had any experience but we went in hard, saying ‘You know this is not going to be fun,’ and they committed to it. I met them when we went diving off the coast of California. They’d never done it, it’s a pretty tricky dive actually, [and]we did a couple of dives out there. There’s strong currents and cold water out there so we put them through their paces there, and then we put them into training. They just went for it full on which is great. And the great thing is with Mandy, her character is not a professional diver, in fact neither of them are, so it was great. Mandy was genuinely fucking terrified, and Claire too, but Mandy was especially terrified and that comes across. It’s great.

DC: Are there any real sharks in the movie, like they had in Open Water?

JR: Well, Open Water, it has some [real sharks] but they’re not Great Whites. With what we were doing, there was talk about whether we wanted animatronics, and different ways to go. Because of the way we shot it’s not like any other share movie where you’re on the surface and the shark comes from out of the deep and attacks you on the surface. This was: we were in its lair, we were down there, and this was a whole different way of doing it.

DC: Wasn’t this movie supposed to come out last summer? Was it pushed back because of The Shallows?

JR: We were in post-production when they started on The Shallows. But theirs was a studio movie that had a lot of money, and moved fast. Yeah, I think we just didn’t have the money to compete with them, but then the movie worked super well and we could have got caught up a little bit. The Weinsteins were not sure what to do with it, and then you know what? The Shallows ended up to be a great thing for us. It did super well, it proved people are really interested in the genre. And you know Byron Allen [producer] loves the movie, like, he’s so enthusiastic about the movie. So yeah, it was a funny time, but this happens all the time in film, you’re working on something and something else comes out and if they have more money and clout they can beat you to the cinemas. So it’s good and it’s bad, you just have to roll with it, you can’t get too angry or caught up in it.

DC: Since you love diving, and the ocean’s life, how do you feel about the inevitable comparisons to Jaws?

JR: I love sharks, I absolutely love sharks and so I was always a bit worried about doing a movie like this in that I don’t want to in any way present sharks as something that they’re not, and in any way harm their species, because I’m the biggest fucking shark nerd in the world. To me, when we were doing it, the thing I kept coming back to, and it’s exactly what you’re saying, is actually they are scary and we can love that and the thing is, they are scary because they’re the closest thing to dinosaurs or monsters that we have. They are from a different era and time, they live in the dark, black sea and they are just perfect carnivores, killing machines in a sense, and they’re just the most fantastic monster that you could possibly ever have as well as being the most beautiful creature that there is. I really tried hard to, in the movie, it’s about two girls stupidly getting themselves into their lair and it’s not like evil sharks coming to munch and kill. It’s just like, these people should not have gone to where they’ve gone, and they’ve gone to a place where they’re not the top of the food chain.

DC: What’s it like talking about a movie you made a long time ago, that’s just now coming out? Are you just more focused on what’s next?

JR: To be honest, because it moves so fast initially, suddenly it was OK if this Shallows thing is going to be something. Everything really, really amped up, we were just moving at a huge, crazy pace in post-production that, to be honest, the lengths between finishing and release isn’t really that much longer than, for instance, my last movie, Other Side of the Door. It just takes that long to find the slot in everything, but it’s been a while. I’m now on Strangers 2, [so] I’m a bit distanced from the movie which is great. I can look at it and I’m very proud, I couldn’t be happier because it was a fucking hard movie to make. That’s the hardest thing I’ve ever been through and I’d never want to go through that again. That [shoot] took a few years off me so I’m pleased that it’s getting that release. Every post I see and every ad I’m like, ‘Fuck, great.’ And whether it does anything or not, I really hope it does obviously, but I’m super proud, super happy. But yeah, a good distance from it.

DC: We are excited about The Strangers 2. What can you tell us?

JR: It’s going to be great, I hope. I’m in week two of filming. It’s Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman, and they’re fucking great. It looks absolutely incredible. I love Bertino’s film, I think it’s an amazing movie and tonally this movie is going to fit very well into that universe. It has a real strong emotional heart, which the first one did, and it has a very cool retro feel to it, a lot of sort of references to… I mean, I always bring a lot of John Carpenter with me because that’s what I grew up on, but also maybe going back a bit earlier to the seventies movies, from Don’t Look Now to Duel, the Spielberg movie, even Christine a bit, the John Carpenter movie. All of these influences are finding their way into the movie, but I think it’s going to be a real fantastic movie. I’m super excited about it.

47 Meters Down is in theaters June 16, 2017.

Directed by Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door), the underwater thriller stars Mandy Moore (“This Is Us,” A Walk to Remember), Claire Holt (“The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals”), Yani Gellman (“Pretty Little Liars,” “The Young and The Restless”), and Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, The Dark Knight Rises).

47 Meters Down comes out June 16th.

Synopsis:
On the rebound after a devastating break-up, Lisa (Mandy Moore) is ready for adventure while on vacation in Mexico. Even still, she needs a little extra persuasion when her daring sister, Kate (Claire Holt), suggests they go shark diving with some locals. Once underwater in a protective cage, Lisa and Kate catch a once in a lifetime, face-to-face look at majestic Great Whites. But when their worst fears are realized and the cage breaks away from their boat, they find themselves plummeting to the bottom of the seabed, too deep to radio for help without making themselves vulnerable to the savage sharks, their oxygen supplies rapidly dwindling.

Meet The Mist’s Nathalie Raven

A new featurette for Spike’s “The Mist” has been released and this one introduces us to the character of Nathalie Raven, who is played by Frances Conroy (“American Horror Story”). Using clips from the show as well as interview footage, Conroy explains the basis of her character, who seems to believe that the titular mist is nature’s way of taking control over humanity’s environmental issues.

“The Mist” stars Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Danica Curcic, Okezie Morro, Dan Butler, Darren Pettie, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., Russell Posner, Luke Cosgrove, and Frances Conroy. It debuts on Thursday, June 22nd, at 10pm ET/PT.

When the residents of Bridgeville, Maine, find themselves engulfed by a foreboding mist containing a myriad of inexplicable and bizarre threats, their humanity is put to the test.  Based on a story by Stephen King, “The Mist” has been reimagined for television by executive producer/writer Christian Torpe and produced by TWC-Dimension Television.

Frances Conroy stars as Nathalie Raven, a modern-day ecological martyr and prophet with a little knowledge and a lot of faith.

Synopsis:
A small town family is torn apart by a brutal crime. As they deal with the fallout, an eerie mist rolls in, suddenly cutting them off from the rest of the world and, in some cases, each other. Family, friends, and adversaries become strange bedfellows, battling the mysterious mist and its threats, fighting to maintain morality and sanity as the rules of society break down.

Guillermo del Toro Gives His Blessing to the Hellboy Reboot

0
0

Just over a month ago, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola announced that his series would be getting a reboot with The Descent and Dog Soldiers director Neil Marshall at the helm and “Stranger Things” actor David Harbour playing the titular character. It was a shocking announcement for many who were ever hopeful that Guillermo del Toro would be able to complete his Hellboy trilogy that began in 2004 and had a sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008. Now that the dust has settled and the anger has somewhat abated, we’re able to focus on what the future will hold rather than what could’ve been.

Related Story: Let’s Talk About This Hellboy Reboot

Speaking recently at the Annecy Animation Festival, del Toro addressed the upcoming reboot and it seems that he’s moved on and is okay with how things will go. “I don’t own Hellboy, Mike [Mignola] does. So, you know, he is the father of the character and if he wants to reboot it, it’s perfectly fine. I got to make two – that’s two more than I thought I would get to make… So you know, as far as I’m concerned god speed and god bless,” he told audiences, via THR.

We can absolutely mourn the loss of del Toro’s third film and hopefully one day we’ll see it come to life in some form, such as a graphic novel or an art book. But that we are still getting more Hellboy adaptations is a good thing.

Carl’s Playhouse – Dark Hour Haunted House (Event Report)

0
0

I’ve written about Dark Hour Haunted House in Plano, Texas, several times.  Since it’s open year-round with eight unique shows throughout the year, there’s a lot to write about.

Through last October, each year’s Halloween show featured a second maze, the incredible Terra Del Monstrum, a low-tech love letter to the black and white world of classic monsters.  That ended when last year’s Halloween show came to a close, which made me sad.  Also, it begged questions.  Why did it leave?  What would replace it?

The answer came shortly after: Carl’s Playhouse.

If you’re unfamiliar with Dark Hour, Carl works there.  Or so he claims.  Clad in overalls sporting someone else’s name and some very questionable stains, Carl is usually one of the first people to greet you when you arrive.  He, um, “entertains” the people coming and going from the haunt, as well as those waiting in line inside.

Carl is a very unique individual. Well, outside of the death row of your favorite maximum security prison.  He’s, well, maybe I better just show you.

THIS GUY!

Carl’s favorite color is Amber alert.  He’s an inventor; his favorite invention is the amnesia foam mattress.  The neighbor’s kids drive him crazy, keeping him awake all day and night; and if they don’t knock it off, he’s tempted to let them out of his basement.

Someone, somehow, managed to let Carl open a “fun, family” joint in the unused space of Dark Hour.  Carl’s Playhouse features Carl, of course, but also his new team of pals: Willie Bear (He’s seen some stuff), Harry Bear (he’s done some stuff), Cuddles The Clown, Sally Spider, and my favorite, Touchy-Pete.  The latter are all animatronic robot types, but Carl has human accomplic…uh…employees as well, all to make your visit one of happy funtime joy.

As a low-tech add-on haunt to Dark Hour, Carl’s Playhouse is a heck of a good time.  But what makes Carl’s innovative is that it’s episodic.  To my knowledge, there’s never been another episodic haunt that runs through the year.

Starting out, it was just Carl’s Playhouse, full of toilet humor, rotted food, perverted clowns, a Hall of Cleavers, and a candy man who is far too interested in me licking his lollipop.  Then, things changed.  The feds caught on to the mayhem of Carl’s frequently malfunctioning killer robots.  Before they could show up, he needed our help to destroy some evidence and, yes, his browser cache.  You had the choice to do it or not, with a big red button next to his computer at the end of the maze.  Right next to his large box of tissue and industrial pump bottle of lotion.

Yeah.

The feds arrived and cut the power, as they tend to do.  This caused even more malfunctions with the robots and left us with a show in the dark. Each group of four victims got a single flashlight to guide them as federal officers in SWAT gear tried to get a handle on the chaos inside the playhouse.

All this mayhem led to an even more severe problem in the next show: The place caught on fire.  Now, through smoke, you had to make your way through the burning restaurant and back rooms, meeting firemen along the way and fire-damaged henchmen of Carl’s while the man himself tried to assure you everything was fine.

During the last show, May’s “Spring Fever” zombie show, a sign appeared over the door to Carl’s.

Temporarily???

Another note left behind stated that Cuddles the Clown was looking for work as he was tired of cuddling himself.

Is this the end of Carl and his playhouse?  Did the feds finally nab him and lock him away?

We’ll just have to see in a couple of weeks when the “Summer Spirits” show debuts on June 16th and 17th. Click here to check out Dark Hour’s site for more information and tickets. If you’re in the area, you don’t want to miss it!

David Graham’s Concept Posters Are Nothing Short of Brilliant

I’ve spoken many times about how I feel a good poster can be a powerful marketing tool. If I see a visually captivating and engaging poster, I’m far more likely to research a film, to look it up and find out what it’s all about. Generic posters are a dime a dozen and their cheap, uninspired look suggests a lack of care about what the audience should think, which makes me not care about the film.

So when I stumbled across the works of artist David Graham, I was simply blown away. It’s clear that with every poster he created, he thought long and hard about some particular aspect of the film or story that is meaningful. Using that information, he then crafted faux posters that astound with their detail, their innovativeness, and their ability to draw my eyes in and appreciate every inch.

Below is a gallery of several of these posters for titles like Metro 2033, Akira, Meg, Poltergeist, Dune, Friday the 13th, IT, At the Mountains of Madness, and much more. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

You can follow David’s work through his official website.

Box office mega star Dwayne Johnson has posted a new photo via Twitter from the set of the upcoming giant creature film Rampage. While it’s not clear if Johnson is standing amidst the wreckage of a plane or perhaps a mangled mess of multiple vehicles, what is clear is that whatever attacked this heap of metal had no problem tearing it to shreds. You can see the image for yourself below.

About the Production:
Global megastar Dwayne Johnson headlines New Line Cinema’s action adventure Rampage for director/producer Brad Peyton. Beau Flynn, John Rickard, and Hiram Garcia are also producing the film, currently on location in Atlanta, for an April 20, 2018, release. Rampage marks the third collaboration between Johnson, Peyton, and Flynn, following the blockbuster San Andreas.

Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth.  But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry transforms this gentle ape into a raging monster.  To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered alpha predators. As these newly created monsters tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

Rampage also stars Oscar nominee Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Malin Akerman (TV’s “Billions”), Jake Lacy (TV’s “Girls”), Joe Manganiello (TV’s “True Blood”), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) as well as P.J. Byrne (The Wolf of Wall Street), Marley Shelton (Solace), Breanne Hill (San Andreas), Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), and Matt Gerald (TV’s “Daredevil”). Serving as executive producers are Marcus Viscidi, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Jeff Fierson, with Wendy Jacobson co-producing. The screenplay is by Ryan Engle and Adam Sztykiel, story by Ryan Engle, based on the video game Rampage.

The creative team includes production designer Barry Chusid (San Andreas), director of photography Jaron Presant (2nd unit, Star Wars: The Last Jedi), editor Jim May (Goosebumps), and costume designer Melissa Bruning (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). Music will be composed by Andrew Lockington, who created the scores for San Andreas and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

The creatures of Rampage will be brought to life by acclaimed VFX supervisor Colin Strause (San Andreas, X-Men: Apocalypse), with five-time Academy Award-winning visual effects company Weta Digital (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).

Rampage is a New Line Cinema presentation, a Wrigley Pictures/Flynn Picture Company/7 Bucks Entertainment production, in association with ASAP Entertainment. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Exclusive: Director Steve Mitchell Talks King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen

One of our favorite filmmakers round these parts is Larry Cohen. The director of such classic movies as It’s Alive, Q – The Winged Serpent, A Return to Salem’s Lot and Wicked Stepmother will be the main focus of the upcoming documentary King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen, which will be hitting film festivals this summer.

Steve Mitchell is directed the doc, and kindly took the time to answer our questions below.

DC: How did the film come about?

SM: The original impulse to do a film about Larry hit me one day when I was checking out his IMDB page. I was surprised at how many credits he had that I was not aware of, and I am a fan. The credits/projects I was not aware of were mostly as a writer, and mostly in television. I did some more digging and realized that Larry had a pretty main stream career in addition to his LARCO pictures. They were mostly independent films, even though they were released by studios or established distribs of the day. His career was not a common one, and it made an impression on me. I began to think of doing a feature doc on Mr. Cohen’s career sometime after that. When or how…I had no idea, but the impulse was there.

DC: Larry Cohen has had one hell of a career spanning several decades. Was it a daunting task to cover all of this in one film?

SM: You have no idea! The simple answer is “yes.” While the spine of the film is his career, the governing idea was to create a portrait of Larry through his work. “Who is Larry Cohen?” That was what the goal was. We used his childhood, early TV career, and films as chapters. We had no script or grand plan. The interviews steered us in terms of structure. Luckily, Larry is a guy who likes to talk and we got hours and hours…and hours…of anecdotes. The trick was to boil all of that info into a portrait of a unique and idiosyncratic story teller. Sounds easy enough, but it took a long time to select, create and cut the most telling material into a story. We have a ton of great stories that we did not use. They were too long, and we hope to collate them for the Blu Ray release.

DC: Are there any defining moments that you chose to focus on?

SM: The movie is essentially all of his defining moments. What I mean by that is Larry is defined by the sum total of his work, the circumstances of his career at those specific times, and his nature/personality. Some moments are more defining than others, of course, but they all add up to create a portrait which is the goal. I was interested in how the tapestry of his career was created by the stitches along the way. As analogies go, maybe a little pretentious, but we were examining a career that has lasted over half a century!

DC: He also has a reputation as being a fearless guerrilla filmmaker, is this something you wanted to explore?

SM: Absolutely. Especially with his New York based films. New York is my home town, and I know a lot of the locations in his pictures, and it was fascinating to me how he “stole” so many of his shots and got away with it. We focus on that in the film, and it is pretty funny stuff. That is until you realize how dangerous some of it was to the innocent bystanders in the shots, but no one got hurt, so his “wildman” stories are amusing…now. That guy had a pair on him, which most independent filmmakers need to get through the day. He was also clever which is important, especially when you don’t have money to throw at or solve a problem. As a director, Larry was very resourceful, and could take advantage of almost any situation…good or bad. Since he wrote his movies, he could improvise scenes in the moment, which he did…a lot.

DC: Many of Cohen’s films contain underlying social commentaries, something sorely lacking in many films today. Is this a key theme of your documentary?

SM: It is one of the themes. Let’s face it…Larry’s films are loaded with ideas. This is why he is an idiosyncratic filmmaker. You may disagree with his POV, or ideas, but all of his movies are about something. The recent film, GET OUT kind of struck me as a picture Larry could have made. That said, Larry is also an entertainer and wants his films to be seen and enjoyed by the broadest audience.

DC: You interview a ton of big names in the film, including Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, J.J. Abrams, Rick Baker and John Landis. Can you talk about how they came on board and what it was like working with them?

SM: Persistence and luck played a big part in getting our “cast” together. I never interviewed Mr. Scorsese in person. We had been trying to get him for months. He was about to go to Taiwan to shoot SILENCE, and he was running out of time. He was very dedicated to getting it done before he left the states. Frankly, I would have jumped on a “red eye” to New York if that is what it took to get our interview with him. Ultimately, he requested questions, and had some of his “guys” shoot the interview for us. He was generous with his limited time, and my partners and I really appreciate his taking the time to talk about Larry.

We had to find Michael Moriarty, which I did after some digging, and we flew to Canada to speak with him, which was a blast. Michael is such a charming and entertaining fellow. Larry called J.J. Abrams and helped us set something up with him. He also helped us get Yaphet Kotto to sit down with us. Yaphet rarely gives interviews, but he loves Larry, and during a visit to L.A. we interviewed him, which was a real “get” for us. He was the star and title character of Larry’s first feature, BONE, after all. He was an interesting guy and we were thrilled to talk with him about Larry, as well as MIDNIGHT RUN, which is a personal fave. Agent Mosely rules!

With most of the LA based folks, it was a matter of when it was convenient for them. A public shout out of “thanks” to all of the folks who talked with us, and were so generous with their time. They were very enthusiastic when it came to talking about Larry, and how much they enjoyed working with him. I know it sounds like a love fest, but the actors, especially, who worked with Larry, all seem to love him. Tara Reid, was very appreciative of her early role on RETURN TO SALEM’S LOT and told us, “Larry’s chill.”

DC: What kind of style and approach are you using for the documentary?

SM: My editor, Kai Thomasian, and I never really discussed an approach other than using the time line of Larry’s career as our spine. Stylistically, I would say our cut is more rhythmic than staccato. Everything flows from one scene or image into another. We were very aware that we live in an age where viewers have short attention spans. Sad, but true. I’ll be the first one to admit that my attention span isn’t what it used to be. Sign of the times, I guess, so with that in mind we always tried to engage the viewer with as much eye candy to compliment the interviews and clips.

Lucky for us, that Larry never threw anything away and we have a ton of BTS/candid images to compliment the clips and archival footage of Larry. Larry had color home movies of himself as a boy! Great stuff! When you cut anything, especially a documentary, you always need something to cut to. We always had clips from his films, but I was so grateful to have pictures of Larry at work…on and off the set. They just help illustrate Larry’s story in a more visually articulate way.

DC: How have you found the process of working with Larry?

SM: I know it is sort of a typical answer, but he was fantastic. He was always trying to help us with whatever we needed. He dug through his archives and found things I missed on my first, and second pass. He found correspondence, video, rare images…rare to me anyway, which were extremely helpful. Also, Larry’s a trip in general: always the entertainer, making jokes, which, most of the time, were/are pretty funny. We talk about his early career as a comedian, and we were lucky to have some footage of him doing some stand-up at an awards show. He loves doing impressions as well. Performing is definitely in his DNA.

DC: Do you touch upon his relationship with Hitchcock?

SM: A bit. Larry had some long-ish stories about developing DADDY’S GONE A HUNTING, for Hitchcock, which we could not use. We have so many interesting stories that we hope to include on the Blu Ray, that we could not use in the film.

DC: And lastly, that poster of him climbing the Chrysler Building with Q the Serpent flying overhead is really something to look at. Can you talk about its design process?

SM: Doing an illustrated poster was always important to me. I love illustrated movie posters from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, especially, so, dammit, we were going to create an illustration that would be our key art. We wanted something a little retro, and a lot of fun. Having Larry wrapped around the Chrysler building with a camera, seemed to be a good way to sell that. My partner, Matt Verboys, suggested illustrator Paul Shipper as a guy to consider. Paul had created some striking images for new releases of classic films on Blu Ray, which impressed me, so we reached out to him. Lucky for us, he said “yes.” In addition to being enormously talented, he was very easy to work with. We found him just in time, because he is now working for Disney/Marvel, and is probably out of our price range.
