Who's up for a little red band trailer action and group of images from the long awaited Sundance sensation V/H/S (review here)? Yeah we thought there'd be a few takers. Dig in for the goodies right here!

Magnolia has announced that they're planning to roll the horror anthology film out on VOD August 31st with a limited theatrical run to follow beginning October 5th. For more info keep your eyes on the V/H/S Facebook page.

Segment directors include Adam Wingard (You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You're Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence, two of whom were part of the YouTube sensations known as Chad, Matt and Rob (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella).

Synopsis:
When a group of petty criminals are hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

Bringing together some of the top filmmakers in the game today, this wickedly conceived horror anthology sends the viewer through a gauntlet of suspense, terror, shock, and downright brutality—instantly distinguishing itself from a sea of lackluster found-footage horror flicks. The diverse and deviously creative minds behind V/H/S shatter any preconceived notions about the genre, making it feel inventive and captivating once again.

Lionsgate Remaking Saw?Even though Lionsgate was adamant about it, we knew that "final" Saw movie wasn't going to be the last by any stretch of the imagination. Jigsaw makes too much cash at the box office to just let him go. This, however? We just don't know.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Lionsgate is tinkering with the idea of rebooting the Saw franchise although an eighth film isn’t out of the cards. It should also be noted that nothing is official, and nothing has been decided. Things are at the infant stage at this time, but rest assured Jigsaw will return.

So what do you guys want? A remake/reboot? Another sequel? Or should well enough just be left alone? Sound off below!

The Secret Circle's Phoebe Tonkin Heading to Mystic Falls for Recurring Role on The Vampire DiariesConsidering how highly "The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Kevin Williamson always spoke of his "The Secret Circle" star Phoebe Tonkin whenever her name came up, it's no surprise that she's joining "TVD" Season 4. Read on for the details.

Per TV Guide, Tonkin will first appear in Episode 4.03 as Hayley, a wild, sexy, and very free-spirited friend with whom Tyler (Michael Trevino) shares a past. Sounds like she'll be there to drive a wedge even further between Tyler and his beloved Caroline (Candice Accola), who, last we saw, thinks Tyler is dead thanks to Klaus (Joseph Morgan). But we know different, of course, and from what we're hearing so far, Season 4 is already shaping up to be an improvement over its predecessor.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns to The CW on Thursday, October 11th, with Episode 4.01, "Growing Pains."

Season 4 Synopsis:
Season Four begins with the knowledge that everything is changing. As Elena and her friends enter into the final stretch of high school before graduation sends them off on different paths, their bond to their home town of Mystic Falls takes on a deeper meaning when a new villain seems intent on destroying it.

According to Variety, Meta Golding (pictured right; "CSI", "Criminal Minds") has been cast in Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in the role of Enobaria, a former winner of the Hunger Games. How come no one in this world has a regular name? In any event...

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Pets. Sometimes you look at them and wonder to yourself just what the hell they could be thinking. What if you could tune in? What if you could hear every word? In The Voices these cats and dogs are thinking about a lot more than just Beggin' Strips and milk rings.

Deadline reports that Mandalay Vision and Vertigo Entertainment will team on The Voices, a psychological thriller that will be directed by Marjane Satrapi from a script by Paranormal Activity’s Michael R. Perry. As some background, the script made the Black List previously, and Satrapi got an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature for her first film, Persepolis, adapted from her semi-autobiographical novel.

Mandalay Vision will finance the film, and Mandalay’s Matthew Rhodes and Cathy Schulman are producing with Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee. Mandalay Senior Vice President Adam Stone will also produce. Casting is under way, and the intention is to begin production in the early part of 2013.

Synopsis
Jerry, a schizophrenic worker at a bathtub factory, accidentally kills an attractive woman from accounting. While trying to cover his bloody tracks, Jerry starts taking advice from his talking (and foul-mouthed) cat and dog.

Pretty much any movie fans worth their salt would call themselves a fan of Spielberg's 1975 summer blockbuster Jaws. However, filmmaker J. Michael Roddy has all of us beat in the fan department.

During the recent press day held at Jaws Lake on the Universal Studios backlot, Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Roddy about all things Jaws- its legacy, why it has endured and what kept him going to get The Shark Is Still Working finished up over the last few years.

Check out our exclusive video interview with Roddy below, and look for more coverage later this week in support of Universal's Jaws Blu-ray release!

From the Press Release
JAWS – the landmark motion picture that still makes audiences afraid to go in the water – comes to Blu-ray for the first time ever on August 14th, 2012. Featuring an all-new, digitally remastered and fully restored picture, as well as 7.1 surround sound, the JAWS Blu-ray Combo Pack with DVD, Digital Copy and UltraViolet gives fans the ultimate way to watch the breathtaking and terrifying action-thriller.

One of the most influential motion pictures of all time and nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award®, JAWS stars Oscar® winner Richard Dreyfuss and Oscar® nominees Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw. Produced by legendary filmmakers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown, the film earned an Oscar® for composer John Williams’ instantly recognizable minimalist score, as well as Oscars® for Best Editing and Best Sound. When it was first released in 1975, JAWS smashed box-office records and became the highest-grossing film of its era, earning Spielberg a reputation as a Hollywood visionary. Today, it remains one of the highest-grossing films in motion-picture history[1] and is largely considered the film that launched the summer blockbuster.

JAWS is one of 13 classic Universal films to be digitally remastered and fully restored from 35mm original film elements as part of Universal’s ongoing 100th Anniversary celebration. The JAWS restoration began with researching and evaluating the existing film elements to determine the best means to restore the film. Over the course of several months, skilled technicians at Universal Studios Digital Services meticulously balanced color, removed dirt and scratches, and repaired any damage to the film elements shot by shot and frame by frame. Following the picture restoration, Universal Studios Sound team up-mixed the iconic JAWS soundtrack to DTS-HD Master 7.1, optimizing the sound on the Blu-ray for the latest home theater technology. The entire restoration process was conducted in conjunction with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment’s post-production team to ensure the integrity of Spielberg’s original vision remained intact.

“JAWS holds a unique place, not just in Universal Pictures’ history, but in global pop culture,” said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “It is only fitting that this phenomenal film should be given the extensive restoration needed to ensure that long-time fans as well as newcomers can enjoy this unforgettable cinematic achievement for generations to come.”

The JAWS Blu-ray™ Combo Pack is available in collectible Universal 100thAnniversary packaging for a limited time. Exclusive Interview: Author John Passarella Talks Supernatural: Rite of Passage

    $
    0
    0

When Supernatural: Rite of Passage is released on August 14, 2012, readers will go on a ride with Sam, Dean and Bobby as they head to the town of Laurel Hill, New Jersey, following a series of unlucky incidents occurring in the small city.

Dread Central recently sat down with the author of Supernatural: Rite of Passage, John Passarella, to ask him about his upcoming novel and some of his other works. Enjoy!

AMANDA DYAR: Supernatural: Rite of Passage is only one of many novels you've published that deals primarily with supernatural and horror themes. Can you tell us a bit about how you began writing professionally, how you got the gig for Supernatural: Night Terror and what that particular experience was like?

JOHN PASSARELLA: I wrote in various genres before Columbia Pictures purchased the movie rights to my co-authored first novel, the supernatural thriller WITHER. Shortly thereafter, Pocket Books purchased the book rights. I've been working in the supernatural and paranormal thriller genres ever since. A San Francisco Chronicle reviewer wrote that WITHER "hits the groove that makes TV's 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' such a kick." I was a big "Buffy" fan, so I approached the "Buffy" tie-in novel editor with that quote. She invited me to submit and outline a sample chapter. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ghoul Trouble became my first tie-in novel. Since then, all of my tie-in novels (two Angel novels and now two Supernatural novels) have resulted from editors contacting me, asking if I'd like to submit proposals. Cath Trechman (who would become one of my Night Terror editors) found my website, saw I had supernatural novel and tie-in experience and asked if I'd like to submit pitches. I submitted four ideas and got approval to outline one of those, and Night Terror was the result.

AMANDA: Supernatural: Rite of Passage is your second work based on the television series "Supernatural". For fans who may not be familiar with your work, how will the novel coincide with the television show, and how difficult would it be for someone to understand your novel without first watching the show?

JOHN: Supernatural: Rite of Passage is set in the seventh season of the show, before the events of "How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters." During the pitching and outlining process, I try to keep the storyline as current as possible with the airing shows. In this case I was told to set it before that episode so in my mind it takes place between Episodes Nine and Ten. I had to finish the novel long before Season Seven ended, but fans reading the book will have the benefit of knowing how the season-long story arcs played out. At its heart, the show and the books are about two brothers fighting supernatural evil. That's what I tell fans of my other books who may not watch the show. The Supernatural universe fits in so well with my other books, all supernatural thrillers, that I believe they would enjoy the tie-ins as well. A few earlier reviewers of Night Terror had not watched the show but really enjoyed the book. I think that will hold true for Rite of Passage.

AMANDA: Supernatural: Rite of Passage tells a story about Sam, Dean and Bobby going toe-to-toe with a Japanese demon that has been plaguing a small town a series of unlucky events, and it directly coincides with Season Seven of the television show. What more can you tell us about your upcoming novel's storyline, and will we hear about or see any Leviathans during our reading?

JOHN: I envisioned Night Terror happening in a small town but wanted to scale things up for Rite of Passage. Laurel Hill (fictional) is not a big city, but it is a fair-sized one, with more of the venues of a higher population center. I needed that size and those settings for some of the big action and disaster scenes in the book. Basically Laurel Hill is experiencing Murphy's Law on steroids. Whatever can go wrong goes horribly wrong, and then gets unbelievably worse. One of my guidelines in writing the novel was that the Leviathans were off-limits. So I mention them a few times, and the Winchesters are ever-conscious of their threat and consider their possible involvement at one point in the book, but ultimately Rite of Passage is a standalone novel, not part of the Leviathan arc. That's a necessary constraint, though, since the longer book publishing cycle is out of sync with the airing of episodes. Rite of Passage occurs near the end of the halfway point of Season Seven but will be published long after the finale and a couple months before the start of Season Eight.

AMANDA: In another interview you said one of the great things about writing a novel as opposed to creating a television show is that you have no budget or censors, thereby allowing for more violence and special effects to be present in your story. Can you tell us in what ways this influences your stories and give us some specific examples of what it has allowed you to add to this or a previous novel that would never make it on television?

JOHN: Yes, that is kind of a mandate of the books, to do in print what the TV show could never afford to film. Night Terror might have had a season's worth of creature effects had they needed to be produced for TV. Rite of Passage has a level of destruction that might fall in line with a feature film budget but could never be filmed for a TV episode. When I'm writing my outlines, I'm looking for ways to increase the scale of the action and destruction. In a way, selecting the supernatural menace for the book plays into this as well. I want a monster that has the potential to rise above the more intimate scale of the TV episodes. But I also need to keep the story believable within the universe of the show, even when all hell breaks loose. What has worked for me is that the faster it scales up to "major disaster," the faster the Winchesters need to resolve it. They see the pattern before anyone else. They are on the ground and fighting the menace long before local law enforcement realizes the extent of the crisis.

AMANDA: "Supernatural" is obviously a wonderful television show with a tremendous storyline that has now lasted into its eighth season. As a writer, how difficult do you find it to come up with a completely original story that hasn't been featured yet on the show, and what type of restraints do you receive when working on a Supernatural novel that may prevent you from dramatically changing the show's storyline?

JOHN: When I was asked to submit ideas for what would become Rite of Passage, I was told that it should be a standalone monster story set in Season Seven before "How To Win Friends..." and that I should not use the Leviathans or any angel/demon stuff. From there, my first order of business was to find a supernatural menace the show hasn't used. Then I try to put my own spin on that menace, to expand the mythology or reinterpret it in interesting ways. I come up with four or five of these and submit short pitches for each. Informing my story is where Sam and Dean are emotionally in the arc of the season when the novel takes place. Within the confines of the novel, I ignore anything that happens to them after that point in the season, even though I'm watching those events occur as each new episode airs. (Of course, I watch those episodes because I'm a fan of the show!) Nonetheless, because of Bobby's diminished role in the show after "How To Win Friends...", I wanted him to have a larger role in Rite of Passage versus his phone cameos in Night Terror. And because of his presence, I wanted to examine various family dynamics, from supportive and strengthening to extremely dysfunctional and horrific.

Things Get Colder with the Release of Dark Horse Comics' Teaser #2

Looks like we weren't quite on the right track as to what Dark Horse Comics' Teaser #1 was all about yesterday, but with the release of #2 today, all has been made clear: It involves Paul Tobin's horror-crime comic Colder. Check it out!

Back in April we got the first word on Colder, which is from the creative team behind the successful Falling Skies comic, writer Paul Tobin (Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man) and artist Juan Ferreyra (Rex Mundi).

“Horror and mystery are two things that have always fascinated me, and I wanted to bring those elements together in a story woven around what I consider one of my strongest tools as a writer, which is character. One facet of horror that I really wanted to explore is how the tension of horror is at its peak when it’s still a mystery. But... what if we had a chance to peek behind the curtain and into the darkened closet, and found that the truth is even worse?” Paul Tobin questioned.

“Artist Juan Ferreyra and I really felt comfortable working with each other on our Falling Skies collaborations so of course we wanted to team up again, but this time we wanted to delve into the uncomfortable... to jerk the chains of a story’s comfort level and take some real chances. Because, bottom line, the type of material I myself like to read is material like Hellboy or Preacher or anything where the creators are both taking chances and having fun. Juan and I are taking chances here, and we think it should be fun for everyone,” said Tobin.

Look for Colder #1 on November 7, 2012.

    Synopsis:
Declan Thomas’s body temperature is dropping. He checks it every day, and it’s dropped from 98.6 to a current average in the high fifties. He never gets sick, never feels pain. He’s just an ex-inmate of an insane asylum that began operation in the 1890s, specializing in those poor souls deemed too dangerous for society. As to when Declan himself was admitted, the records were destroyed in a fire. His nurse has found references to him that go as far back as the 1940s... which is odd since he doesn’t look a day over thirty.

While we all wait patiently for the announcement of what to expect when zombies rear their undead heads in Call of Duty: Black Ops II (we're told the amount of content is BIGGER than ever), a new multiplayer trailer has arrived. Check it out!

About Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops II delivers the most groundbreaking and visceral Call of Duty experience ever. Set in the year 2025, Call of Duty: Black Ops II propels players into global conflict featuring advanced weaponry, robotics, and drone warfare in a new Cold War scenario whose seeds are being sown in today's headlines. New graphics technology drives the stunning cinematic action of the single-player campaign's branching storylines and non-linear missions.

"Hands down, this is the most ambitious Call of Duty ever," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "We are bringing disruptive innovation to the franchise and we are doing it on several fronts. We're pushing the boundaries technologically, graphically, and from a narrative and gameplay perspective. At the same time, we need to stay true to the epic realism, authenticity, heart pumping adrenaline, and cinematic action that so many people love and expect from a Call of Duty game. Treyarch's vision for Call of Duty: Black Ops II will redefine the Call of Duty franchise for the future-both literally and figuratively."

"With Call of Duty: Black Ops II, the team is crafting an experience that Call of Duty fans have never seen before," said Mark Lamia, Studio Head for Treyarch. "We are challenging assumptions on every front, with the single-player campaign, Zombies and multiplayer. In the campaign, we are creating a thought-provoking story that introduces branching storylines and meaningful choices that impact the narrative. Running in the multiplayer engine for the first time, Zombies gives players a bigger and more diverse set of gameplay experiences, as well as entirely new ways to wage war with the undead. And in multiplayer, we're embracing all skill levels and play styles to give players more ways to engage. With Call of Duty: Black Ops II, we're all in and we won't rest until we've launched nothing less than the best Call of Duty we've ever made."

Dark Sky Bringing Hypothermia Home in October

Even though we're currently in the dead of summer, we cannot help but feel a little chill run down our spines knowing that the Halloween season is right around the corner. Dark Sky Films just announced they have another reason to get you shuddering this October.

    From the Press Release
A family returns to their favorite winter getaway for some peaceful ice fishing, little suspecting that they are about to become bait for a hideous underwater creature in HYPOTHERMIA, a bloody and bone-chilling shocker coming to DVD from genre specialists Dark Sky Films on October 2, 2012, with an SRP of $24.98.

Ray Pelletier (Michael Rooker; "The Walking Dead," Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Slither) is looking forward to a quiet weekend of ice fishing with his family at the same peaceful lake they've been visiting for years. Unfortunately for the Pelletiers, the obnoxious big-city father-son duo of Steve and Stevie Cote has picked the same weekend to spend at the remote frozen spot.

The fishermen quickly notice that the fish below the thick ice aren't biting, and Ray thinks the Cotes' state-of-the-art gear, including a loud ice drill, has scared them all away. But the two families' petty squabbles are soon eclipsed by a much greater enemy: Something unnatural and ferocious is under the ice, and its prey is human. Miles from civilization and with only a few inches separating them from the freezing water below, the Pelletiers and the Cotes must find a way to work together to fight the vicious creature that's out to hunt them.

Directed by James Felix McKenney (Automatons, Canniballistic, Satan Hates You) and produced by the creators of new cult classics The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and Stake Land, HYPOTHERMIA is as taut as a fishing line snagged by a barracuda. This modern spin on the classic monster movie features memorable performances from horror vet Rooker and co-stars Blanche Baker (Sixteen Candles, The Girl Next Door) and Greg Finley ("The Secret Life of the American Teenager").

Exclusive Interview: Director Keith Arem Discusses His New Graphic Novel INFEX

    $

A unique new graphic novel titled INFEX is now available for iPad 2 and is scheduled to launch its next phase this month. The graphic novel blends as many storytelling genres as it does creative mediums to tell the story of Evelyn "Ivy" Kendall in a futuristic world.

Dread Central recently sat down with the creator of INFEX, video game director and producer Keith Arem, to discuss his creative new approach to the graphic novel. Read on to learn more!

AMANDA DYAR: INFEX is a unique concept that is hard to categorize solely as a book, movie, or game. Since this piece of interactive media has never really been utilized before, where in the world did you come up with the idea for both the technology and story of INFEX?

Exclusive Interview: Director Keith Arem Discusses His New Graphic Novel Infex

KEITH AREM: I’ve always been fascinated about the ability of an organism to change its surroundings from within. Similarly, that was the goal of this property – from the foundation of the story to the way it was presented as a product. INFEX was designed to be a true transmedia experience, allowing the audience to experience the story on a variety of mediums. Brandon Humphreys and I created the original story concept, and our initial effort was going to produce my next Contagion album as a conceptual album with music, dialog, and sound design. That quickly evolved into the development of the INFEX graphic novel and viral/ARG campaign, which suddenly had thousands of people following the story online through hidden websites, Facebook pages, Twitter sites, and convention appearances.

When we finally released the limited edition INFEX graphic novel and Origins comic at Comic-Con in 2009, we were restrained by traditional print publishing and distribution methods. Now, in 2012, we chose to develop the INFEX App exclusively for iPad 2 because it offers the viewer the most engaging experience, and the display and sound quality are superb. Because of my background in games, working with actors, writing music, and conceptualizing scenes, I wanted to bring these elements into the novel, without losing the tactile experience of reading a book. With the iPad’ s technology and features, the result was an immersive approach to make each panel of the graphic novel come to life, with all of these elements combined. I was finally able to incorporate my experience in games, music, animation, and film into one product.

AMANDA: INFEX's storyline revolves around a woman named Evelyn "Ivy" Kendall--a cancer survivor turned mutant thanks to a special cure delivered by her father. What was your thought process when creating the protagonist for your story, what type of person is Ivy, and how does the character evolve over the course of INFEX's phases?

KEITH: Much like the viewer in this book, I wanted Ivy’s experience to be one of discovery as she progresses though the story. Instead of a linear progression of novels (sequels, prequels, etc.), the INFEX world was built using the idea of story “threads” that would intersect at a central point in time. The book instantly opens in the middle of this intersection, throwing the reader into the story without a background or history for the events that lead to this moment.

Ivy’s story is the first “thread” that occurs 15 years after this intersection. Ivy is a strong, sensitive, compassionate person who is trying to complete a legacy left by her father. I wanted Ivy to be an innocent victim of a battle between her father and his rival, and she becomes the key to ending their conflict. Her father, Dr. Leonard Kendall, had created the cure for the world’s diseases but hid the technology inside her to protect it from his company’s sinister intentions. Throughout the book Ivy learns about her father’s tragic struggle and realizes her destiny was part of an elaborate chess game between him and his business partner, Dr. Harlan Griffin. She realizes that she is a pawn in their war, but as she unravels her father’s history, she understands she must evolve to survive and bring an end to the company that murdered him.

AMANDA: In the first phase of INFEX, we find Ivy teaming up with former IngenBio Commander Garret Thorne ironically enough. Can you tell us about Thorne's character and how his relationship with Ivy will be affected over time? Also, who is the primary antagonist in INFEX?

Exclusive Interview: Director Keith Arem Discusses His New Graphic Novel Infex

KEITH: At the beginning of the story, Garrett Thorne is a former Gulf War soldier, working as the Head of Security for IngenBio Corporation - the largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Thorne befriends Ivy and her father, Dr. Leonard Kendall, but soon also becomes a victim of the chess game between Kendall and Griffin. Harlan Griffin is the President of IngenBio, and he uses Thorne’s relationship to manipulate Kendall. When Thorne is eventually sent in to retrieve Kendall’s technology, he becomes responsible for Kendall’s death and given the responsibility of protecting Ivy from Griffin.

Fifteen years later we discover Thorne has been captured and genetically modified by Griffin. When he discovers Ivy has been captured, he escapes and uses his new abilities to guide Ivy and protect her from Griffin. As his name implies, Thorne is a polar opposite of Ivy, both in his abilities and physical attributes. Their combination of unique abilities and opposing strengths make them a powerful rival to Griffin’s army.

AMANDA: The voice acting in INFEX contains an all-star cast of talented actors including Lance Henriksen (Aliens and Terminator), Michael Wincott (The Crow), William Fichtner (The Dark Knight and Date Night), and even video game veterans such as Will Yun Lee (Sleeping Dogs) and Troy Baker (The Last of Us and Bioshock: Infinite). How did you assemble such an amazing cast for INFEX, and how much has the talent contributed to the success of the project?

KEITH: I have been very fortunate to work with such an amazing group of actors over the past several years. My work in games has fostered amazing relationships with some of the most talented people in the industry, and we love working together. Not only do I have a strong respect for their work and abilities, but I am drawn towards people who love their craft. I love what I do and collaborate best with people who are more excited about a concept and story than just a paycheck. The cast of INFEX has brought the story to life in a way no other book has done before. I wanted the viewer to experience each panel of the graphic novel as if it was a scene from a movie, and their performances deliver this and more. I was extremely impressed with everyone’s contribution, and I can’t wait to do more.

AMANDA: INFEX is definitely an exciting title that we can't wait to complete. What do you hope the lasting impact of INFEX will be on the entertainment industry, when will the remaining phases of the story be released, and will INFEX ever move to another platform or possibly produce a full fledged spin-off video game or other project?

KEITH: We are submitting Phase 2 with Apple this week and hope to release the successive phases each month through October. Our goal is to develop INFEX into a true transmedia franchise and expand the other story threads in a variety of mediums. I plan to develop a series, game franchise, and film around the INFEX universe and utilize a range of new technologies to tell these stories. My hope is that INFEX will create a new breed of entertainment, allowing graphic novelists, actors, game developers, writers, musicians, artists, and creators to play in a new medium of storytelling.

You can learn more at the rather spooky INFEX website or download the first phase on iTunes.

Dennis Gansel in Talks to Direct Grim Night for Universal

Dennis Gansel in Talks to Direct Grim Night for UniversalBack in October of last year we got the first word that Unbroken Films partners Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) and Adrienne Biddle were partnering with Marc Platt to produce Grim Night for Universal, and now finally a director has been chosen.

Per Variety, German helmer Dennis Gansel is in negotiations to make his U.S. directorial debut on Grim Night, which is based on the original screenplay and short film by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey. The film is set in a world where people lock themselves indoors one night a year for fear of random attacks from creatures known as the Grims. Below is a promo trailer put together by Bertino last year when he was marketing the idea to various studios.

Gansel made a name for himself in Europe with a number of German films, including We Are the Night (review here), Before the Fall, and The Wave, the latter of which played at Sundance in 2008.

Universal paid in the high six figures for the pitch last fall, and the project is something the studio is excited about and sees it as a potential franchise. Anikah McLaren, Universal's director of development, will oversee the project for the studio.

In case you're wondering what Bertino has been up to lately, production just wrapped on the Blumhouse production Mockingbird, which he wrote and directed.

Look for more on both projects soon!
